The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. The proposed recommencement of mining activities recognises the complexity of the KIVS and later disruptive faulting and will require tighter grade control systems, targeted mining techniques and a gravity circuit to maximise free Au recovery.CITATION:Vigar, A J, Lueck, B, Taylor, I, Prendergast, K and Dale, P, 2015. Transitioning to a green future requires the mining industry to adopt sustainable practices. Filtered tailings are become a key expectation of the communities we operate in and are growing in a number or mining commodities including bauxite, nickel, gold and iron ore. The filtration technologies required range from dewatering screens to vacuum and pressure filters. Particular challenges faced in iron ore applications include large scale which means several units of large size are often required. In addition, a high specific gravity that cause sedimentation issues and a high abrasion level make demands on achieving reliability level at above 90 per cent. This paper describes the testing, selection criteria and specific features required to provide a rational option for equipment and plant design. An example of how this has been applied in an iron ore application in Brazil is used to demonstrate a successful outcome. This project installed four overhead beam filter presses each producing around 200 t/hr utilising a recessed chamber plate, feed pressures up to 15 bar, cake thickness of 5 mm. The moisture lower than 20 per cent that was produced was considered to provide material with handling and geotechnical properties to guarantee a safe stacking. Regular high pressure washing at 100 bar was considered imperative to maintain cloth life and process performance. The correct management of the system (OPEX control) by PLC control ensures a balance between machine potentials and plant needs. With this equilibrium it is possible to limit mechanical wear preserving equipment lifetime.

The main tectonic elements in Myanmar are a late Mesozoic and Cenozoic magmatic arc system in the west, repeated in northern Myanmar by more than 300 km of dextral movement on the Sagaing Fault, and the back-arc continental region affected by early and late Mesozoic orogenies, in the east. Historically most lode gold production has been from latest Cretaceous high-grade mesothermal veins and derived placers in the Wuntho and Tagaung-Myitkyina segments of the magmatic arc. Placer deposits in the Ayerwaddy River north of Myitkyina are currently worked by more than 100-bucket dredges. South of Wuntho, the magmatic arc and Pegu Yoma fold belt host epithermal gold with associated As, Sb and Zn in mid-Tertiary marine sediments. MyanmarÆs most productive lode gold deposit, the Kyaukpahto mine, lies within a north-trending district east of the magmatic arc and north of Mandalay. Here mineralisation and associated jasperoidal silica occur in Eocene sandstones and Permian and Triassic carbonates. Possibly this district continues southeastwards, across the Sagaing Fault, as sediment-hosted Sb Au and locally skarn Au mineralisation within a 1100 km long fold-thrust belt. Also present in the back-arc region are sandstone-hosted Au Cu in a Palaeozoic slate belt, and gold and stratabound gold-base metal mineralisation in the medial metamorphic belt. While untested targets remain in the magmatic arc, particularly for high sulphidation Au, the best potential is clearly within the back-arc slate and fold-thrust belts in the western part of the Shan Plateau and in northeastern-most Myanmar.

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. Farming on bauxite residue using screw propelled equipment (SPE) has been commonly practised to accelerate dewatering and as it promotes consolidation and enhances storage capacity. However, it is unclear when and how often farming should be conducted during the transition of bauxite residue from slurry to dry solids and how deep each slurry deposition should be. To address this issue, three desiccation tanks were established in the laboratory to investigate how much farming could enhance the desiccation and consolidation of tailings. The cuboid tanks, of 350 mm in height and 300 mm in width and length and with an opening on the top, were placed on load cells to monitor the water loss during desiccation and were instrumented with moisture and suction sensors designed and developed at the University of Queensland to measure the water content profile of the residue. The bauxite residue, composed of silt-size particles with low plasticity, was hydraulically deposited in the tanks as a slurry at 27% solid content, resulting in 100 mm depth of solid material settling. Evaporation was enhanced by placing two identical electrical fans above the tanks. Two phases were conducted. In the first phase, the two tanks were left untouched for evaluating non farmed conditions and for calibrating sensors, while in the second phase, three tanks were subjected to atemporal farming using purpose-built screw propelled equipment. The experiment was terminated when the residue was completely desiccated. This paper reports on the instrumented tank set-up and the results obtained to date.

The Ernest Henry Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposit is hosted in a large dilation between two moderately dipping shear zones found in the footwall and hanging wall of the deposit. These shears are controlled by a large diorite intrusion to the north-east and south-west of the deposit, formed ~1660 Ma. A shear zone dubbed the ‘Interlens’ uncovered through underground workings truncates the main orebody into two lenses, and is hypothesized to have formed in conjunction with the Hanging Wall Shear Zone and Footwall Shear Zone. All three shears dip moderately to the SSE (50–140) from open cut exposures through to the current mining horizon approximately 800 m below the surface. Routine geological work and a capital drilling campaign has identified a significant flexure in these sub parallel ore bounding shears with increasing depth. A shift in shear orientation in the Interlens over approximately 100 m vertically from ~50° to the SSE to a steep, easterly trend (~85° to the east) is observed in both drill core and exposures in the underground workings. It is hypothesized the diorite intrusive to the south-west of the deposit controls the shear zone geometries at depth. The geometry of the Interlens mirrors the surface expression of the Proterozoic package of the orebounding shears to the south-west of the deposit, suggesting the surface geometries of the shear zones are consistent with depth. Additional drilling to explore the validity of this hypothesis is planned for the near future to better understand the structural controls on the Ernest Henry mineralisation with increasing depth.

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (C.S.I.R.O.), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.INTRODUCTIONThe fire assay method, although accepted on a world-wide basis as the umpire method for the determination of silver in ores and concentrates, is freely recognized as yielding results which are lower than actual due to unavoidable losses.King (1934) investigated the influence of the cupelshape, size and material on silver losses during cupellation. Using 100 mg silver prills he recorded silver losses ranging between l. and 10 per cent under extreme conditions and averaging approximately 2 percent under conditions which might be considered normal. Guerin (1957) made a detailed study, under carefully controlled conditions in a furnace similar to that described by Esdaile (1952), of the effect of temperature on silver losses during cupellation. Many narrow-vein gold deposits are characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect and the presence of coarse gold. They rank amongst the most difficult of deposits to produce an accurate and precise resource estimate. This contribution presents a case study from the Nalunaq Gold Mine in Southern Greenland. The mine commenced operation in May 2004 and is currently operating at a rate of 400 tonnes per day, to produce about 100 000 oz gold per annum from a total resource base of 1.2 Moz. Mineralisation is characterised by quartz veins that are hosted within a shear zone that is continuous over about 1000 m. The principal orebody is the Main Vein structure, which ranges up to 3 m in width, maintains an average dip of 35¦SE, and contains significant gold grades (1000s g/t Au). Gold particles are often visible, with 25 per cent being greater than 250 microns in size. Variography using underground development samples indicates a nugget effect of about 75 per cent. For the 2005 resource estimate, a 2D metal accumulation ordinary kriged block model was used to produce a global grade for the Target and South Blocks of the Main Vein. Grade control chip-channel samples are collected from æshantyÆ drive footwalls, and used as the basis for both the kriged block model and to determine the grade of individual stope blocks by peripheral weighted averages. Geology plays a key role in mining efficiency, given the locally variable nature of the ore zone.

Multiple regression analysis applied to ventilation records of stopes on the Witwatersrand showed that it was possible to estimate the temperature increase per 100 ft for a new stope with a standard deviation of 0' 5°F. The analysis also threw light on the relative effect on this estimate of five different factors.Application of the analysis of variance technique to a factorialexperiment on the production of dust during rock drilling showed that the effects of air and water pressure were quite small but also showed that the between-machine variation was unexpectedly large.Analysis of variance also proved a valuable means for assessing the bias and random error variation of aneroid barometers used in pressure surveys.INTRODUCTIONThree examples are discussed to illustrate the use of the techniques of "analysis of variance" and "multiple regression" in research on the ventilation of gold mines. Although the techniques are basically similar their application to each example has a slightly different emphasis and the examples were chosen for this reason. The variation ofemphasis is as follows.1. Temperature increases in stapes. This work was undertaken as a preliminary to possible extensive controlled experimentation (Lambrechts, 1959). Data collected in routine work by the mine ventilation personnel were used for analysis and no specific experiments were carried out. The main object was to see whether such data could provide any strong pointers to factors which might be worthy ofmore careful study and to factors which could initially be ignored. Of course, there was hope that the study might provide an empirical formula for rough forecasts.

The Pleistocene basanite-tephrite Rothenberg cone complex was built by an alter- nation of strombolian and phreatomagmatic phases of explosive eruption. Two main centres, on a one km long NNE-trending fissure, were active during its construction. The strombolian deposits from three discrete facies corresponding to the crater-fill and inner wall and outer wall environments on the cone. The outer wall facies consists of an alternation of 1. 'normal' coarse-grained, relatively well- sorted lapilli and bomb beds, and 2. finer-grained poorly-sorted lapilli beds. Evidence suggests that the former was pro- duced by open-vent lava fountaining, with balanced magma supply and discharge rates, and the latter are the products of eruptions during partial blockage of the vent, by collapse of wall-rock, and formation of a degassed crust on the magma. The resulting explosions there- fore ejected a mixture of fresh actively ves- iculating magma, older partially degassed lava and material recycled from the wall of the cones. The phreatomagmatic deposits are an alternation of moderately-sorted fall beds and thinner ash-rich pyroclastic surge and rain-flushed units. The clast populations are much more diverse than strombolian ones, including abundant wall rock fragments from 0-100 m depth. The juvenile (magmatic) particles range from highly vesicular scoria to dense 'bread-crusted' clasts, and contain abundant small wall rock inclusions. The phreatomagmatic phases are products of explosive interaction of small batches of magma with shallow groundwater. Vesiculation of this magma played a small but significant role throughout the fragmentation.

Backfill is usually considered a necessary evil that contributes little to the principal objective of the operation, ore production. Consequently, it is relegated to an auxiliary role in the operation with minimal equipment and resource allocation in planning and is only superficially considered during feasibility studies. In many mines, the inadequacy of the design and operation of the backfill system ultimately leads to frequent delays, excessive costs and, in the worst cases, major instabilities which result in reduced ore production and lost or unrecoverable ore reserves. The primary objective of backfill is to prevent the progressive deterioration of mined out excavations. With the exception of narrow vein operations, it is too weak to alter the mining induced stress regime and control stress concentrations caused by stope extractions. However, the direct benefits of backfill include the possibility to consider a wider range of mining methods, recovery of 100 per cent of the planned resource and the selection of a stoping sequence that minimises the regional stability problems that cause production shortfalls in the later years of mine production. Indirectly, backfill is a practical means of solving other issues, such as waste disposal, that impact the viability of mining. In Australia, the geotechnical conditions of many mines are becoming more difficult and increased attention to the importance of backfill is warranted. This paper describes realistic aspects of backfilling and the positive impacts a well co-ordinated fill system can have on mining activities as a whole. Examples are presented where an integrated approach to backfill systems have offered significant benefits to the operation.

The Hodgkinson goldfield contains over 50 separate lodes which have produced 9.7 tonnes of gold from ore averaging 37 g/t. The gold-quartz.lodes are spatially separate from tin and base metal mineralisation, associated with Permo-Carboniferous granitoids in the province. Host rocks consist of sub-greenschist metamorphic grade shale, conglomerate, sandstone, spilite, chert and melange. Oreshoots average 100 x 30 x I m in Size and are contained in cross-cutting quartz. filled with steep-dipping shear zones. Mineralisation in the quartz. consists of gold with minor arsenopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite with rare calcite. Scheelite and stibnite are aSSOCIated locally but are not necessary proximal or coeval. Alteration is restricted to centimetre-scale phyllic selvedges adjacent to the veins and veinlets.Most of the lodes and vems occur within six main 1.5 x 0.25 km mineralised areas whIch may indIcate separate areas of fluid flow and precipitation. Ore controls differ m melange- and sandstone-hosted lodes but several features are common to all the oreshOOlS. Most of the lodes occur within zones of duauon that are caused by splaymg, refraction through carbonaceous shale-sandstone contacts, or by rolls and changes in strike and dip.Lithologic contacts may act as areas of permeability and chemistry contrast which focus fluid and precipitation. Tensional veins are common between parallel shear zones and curved spur veins occur both in the hangingwall and footwall of the main fissure. Intersections and contacts may have enhanced local fluid flow in many of the areas.

The Illawarra District, from 50 to 100 miles south of Sydney, is one of the State's important coalfields. It extends from Clifton on the north, to the Shoalhaven river on the south, and from the coast westward beyond the coastal scarp.For descriptive purposes, this area falls naturally into two zones:(a) the coastal belt backed-by the eastern edge of the plateau;(b) the plateau, westerly from the coastal scarp.(a) The Coastal Belt.A triangular shaped area extending from Clifton to the Shoalhaven river, composed for the most part of soft coal measures strata of Permian age, which, on weathering, undermines the massive overlying Mesozoic sandstones and causes the gradual recession of thecliffs.South of Wollongong, upper marine sediments and contemporaneous igneous rocks make their appearance beneath the coal measure beds and occupy the greater portion of the coastal belt.(b) Plateau Area.Extending westerly from the coastal escarpment is a plateau known as the Robertson Tableland, composed of Triassic sandstone and shales dipping gently in a northerly direction, and capped in places by Wianamatta. shales and r.rertiary basalts. This tableland is approximately 2400 feet above sea level in the vicinity of Robertson, and gradually falls to about 750 feet at Waterfall.The plateau area for the most part is highly dissected, rough, steep gorges alternate with sharp ridges.A large part of the northern watershed of the Robertson tableland is a reserve for Sydney water supply, and large dams have been constructed at Cataract, Avon, Burke, and Cordeaux.

Urban railway systems need high invest- ments, especially if their routes and stations have to be placed in the subsurface. In the FRG the construction and equipment cost of urban underground railway systems are in the range of 60 to 100 Mill DM per km tunnel. For this reason, track sections on the surface and on elevated structures are used as far as that is possible. Considering whole systems, the costs are in a range from to 45 Mill DM per km length for a metro system with about 80 % of its tracks and stations in tunnels and from 20 to 25 Mill DM per km for a light railway system with about 25 % subsurface infra= structure. The amount of route lengths in tunnels depends on the size of a city, the situation regarding above ground structure and free space on the surface, the level of service quality which has to be achieved with the railway system etc. Despite of the urgent needs to improve the transport conditions there very often arise doubts if an urban railway system is really necessary and can be justified in an economic sense. The experience from many cities around the world shows, that there arise a lot of benefits from urban railway systems, especially with larger sections placed under- ground. They are to be found in the interests of the operator (f.e. operating costs), the user (travel time, quality of service etc.) and regarding social aspects (environmental protection, accidents, consumption of energy Etc.).

Over a 4 hr period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc, and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit.Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity.In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one-third of the lead losses in the final tails.All sizes of zinc values between 100 mesh and 7 microns floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the minus 7 micron fraction.The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

Excavation through sulfidic geologic materials during construction activities has resulted in acid rock drainage (ARD) related problems at numerous (>40) locations across all five geologic regions of Virginia, USA. Potential acidities ranging from >100 to develop a statewide sulfidic materials risk map; document ARD impacts to soil and water quality and engineered structures; and develop methods to assess site-specific risk potentials within a given highway corridor. A statewide sulfidic materials GIS risk map was developed based upon the state digital geology map which assigned four levels of relative risk to all mapped strata based upon predicted lime requirements and probabilities of encountering highly reactive materials. Non-highway construction activities have also routinely disturbed sulfidic materials, and a recent airport project in northern Virginia resulted in over 150 ha of extremely acidic (pH 45 mg/L) run-off from this site heavily damaged a receiving stream, partially due to the fact that it dissolved the galvanised steel water control structures in stormwater detention basins, leading to direct discharge of run-off and sulfidic sediments. The airport area was treated and revegetated in 2002 with a combination of lime-stabilised biosolids, straw mulch, and acid-tolerant grasses. Water quality in a receiving second-order stream quickly responded to the treatment, but some release of N was also noted as a secondary effect. Collectively, these results point out the importance of accurately assessing the potential for excavation of sulfidic materials in construction environments, and the necessity of developing toxic materials handling strategies similar to those employed in mining environments.

Fluid inclusions within quartz accompanying several stages of mineralization at Hillgrove are de cri bed. Pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold mineralization shows uncorrected filling temperatures of between 195°C and 250°C. Later stibnite-antimonide-siderite and stibnite-calcite mineralization has filling temperatures between 100°C and 195°C and a bimodal distribution of temperature peaking at 175°C and 145°C, possibly correlated with the two stages of mineral deposition. Secondary included fluids within an earlier generation of deformed quartz veins are derived from hydrothermal fluids contemporary with the main-stage mineralizing fluids described above. Primary inclusions within latestage, cross-cutting quartz-chlorite-calcite veins show these veins to be unrelated to the mineralization.A correlation between filling temperatures and salinities indicates that mineralization accompanied the mixing of a hot, partly saline, fluid (at 5 per cent equivalent NaCI) with cooler, less-saline meteoric or connate water. Over a vertical distance of 200 m, equivalent mineral assemblages were deposited over the same temperature range. Studies on single crystals suggest rapid deposition with fluid temperature dropping 45°C during their growth. Ore mineragraphy and the fluid inclusion data suggest that the metals were transported by sulphur-poor, relatively low-temperature, low-salinity solutions, possibly as carbonate complexe , and that a vertical zonation of the W-Sb-Au mineralization is compatible with the mixing of this hydrothermal fluid with cooler groundwater. Regional metallogenic and geological considerations suggest that ore metals are derived from the remobilization of deep-seated stratabound deposits or from metamorphic fluids expelled from deepseated volcanoclastic sediments.

Background geochemistry of streams in mineralised terranes is affected by (a) natural sulphide oxidation and associated metallic discharges; and (b) previous mining history and associated discharges. Both of these processes elevate background metal concentrations by (i) directly adding dissolved metals to stream water; and (ii) adding sulphide-bearing sediments' to the stream system, to be trapped in old channels and bars for later chemical decomposition in situ or after flood reworking. Definition of downstream geochemical background, involving sediments and low-flow dissolved chemistry prior to mining is prudent, as this will provide a benchmark for any required estimation of new inputs from, for example, accidental tailings discharges. Two high-profile examples from western USA illustrate these points. Summitville mine in southern Colorado is an environmental disaster left when the operating company went bankrupt in 1991. Acid metal-rich discharges are leaving the site into a river system used for agricultural irrigation. However, nearby sub-catchments have substantial naturally occurring acid metal-rich discharges and locally discharge natural sulphide-rich debris flows into the same river. Distinction between natural and anthropogenic pollution in the downstream reaches is difficult. Early mining at Cooke City, Montana (New World District) released large volumes of sulphide-bearing tailings into the river system when a tailings impoundment dam failed. The event was equivalent to a 100-year flood, and tailings were deposited for 30 km downstream. These tailings are currently oxidising, and are being reworked into the modem stream during high flow events, thus perturbing background geochemistry.

Information from bores in the LatTobe Valley has been accumulating for over fifty years, and the manual extraction of details has become a limiting factor in their use.Punched card equipment, installed by the State Electricity Commission for accounting purposes, was known to be available for reasonable periods, and it was suggested that this could help in the extraction of data from the voluminous records.Investigation showed that they could be substantially duplicated on cards, with consequent gains on many operations; the cards being regarded as an auxiliary to the existing records.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RECORDSAs a bore is drilled a continuous record of the strata is kept, together with notes on the presence of water or any unusual features which the driller may observe.When coal is struck, samples of each ten feet are usually sent for analysis.The location and surface level of each bore is fixed by surveyors, and details of dates and methods of drilling are also kept.Bores are allocated numbers, prefixed by the name of the parish within which they are drilled. Numbers are allocated in conjunction with the Department of Mines, to avoid duplication.Records of strata and analyses are kept in folders, with 100 bore numbers per folder.Standard plans are drawn, showing the locations, bore numbers and surface levels. For each bore they also show the depth and thickness of coal struck, and the total depth drilled.Cross sections are then drawn, connecting the various coal seams, which have been identified by the geologist.
