The Tennant Creek goldfield is situated in the Northern Territory, 360 miles north of Alice Springs, or a tot~l distance of 1,300 miles north of Adelaide, and 600 miles south of Darwin. The auriferous area extends 20 miles north and south by 50 miles east and west. The overland telegraph line and the AIice Springs-Darwin road pass through the centre of the field.HISTORY, PRODUCTIONThe country comprising the goldfield was traversed by J. MacDouall Stuart between 1859 and 1861 in the course of his last three exploring expeditions, which terminated respectively at Attack Creek, Newcastle Waters and at the mouth of the Adelaide River. The explorer named Tennant Creek and also Mount Samuel, on which mining operations are now in progress. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and a relaying station established eight miles north of the site of the present township. There was no other settlement in the adjacent country prior to the opening up of the goldfield.Gold was discovered in 1926 on what is known as the Great Northern lease, three miles north of the township. The field was remote; the nearest plant at which gold ore could be treated was at Peterborough, in South Australia, 1,186 miles distant, and it was not until 1932 that the development of the field actively commenced.The production of the field from its inception to December 31, 1939, was 57,895 QZ. of gold, valued at £522,000, recovered from 61,793 long tons of ore, won from 98 mines. In 1940 seven of these mines had reached depths between 100 ft. and 230 ft., the workings of the majority being less than 60 ft. below surface.TOPOGRAPHY, WATERThe country is traversed by parallel and sub-parallel lines of hills trending east and west and rising to altitudes varying from 50 ft. to 100 ft. above the intervening valleys. The low ranges and isolated hills owe their survival to the resistance offered by their indurated, harder rocks to erosion which has removed the softer intervening formations. Their elevation and area depend to a considerable extent upon the presence of; and, the size of, the more or less exposed haematite formations, or are due to the influence of extensive siliceous dykes which traverse the locality.Watercourses head from the hills and either flood out on the flats within a short distance, or in a few cases follow longer courses to the northward. The overwhelming weight of scientific opinion indicates that human activity is having a discernible and negative influence on the earthÆs climate system. The Australian Government, together with about 100 other nations, has accepted the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change third assessment report, released in 2001. This report was prepared by several hundred eminent scientists from all over the world, from various scientific disciplines and with differing opinions on global warming. The IPCC third assessment report contains a series of relevant, significant conclusions; for example, it finds that there is an increasing body of observations that gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system. Global average surface temperature increased over the past 100 years by about 0.6¦C. This may not seem much, but in the 900 years beforehand, the EarthÆs temperature remained relatively stable. The 20th century was the warmest of the past 1000 years in the northern hemisphere (there is much better information available from the northern hemisphere than the southern hemisphere). The 1990s were the warmest decade of the millennium in the northern hemisphere and 1998 was the warmest year. Although many factors influenced the EarthÆs climate, scientists are confident that greenhouse gas increases were the main factor contributing to global warming in the last 50 years of the 20th century. Increases in carbon dioxide, methane, troposhperic (lower atmosphere) ozone, halocarbons and nitrous oxide have all contributed to global warming. Combating climate change cannot be done without the cooperation of industry and the community at large. It is important that Government and industry work together to achieve greenhouse gas abatement while ensuring continued economic growth. The cause of the problem û the generation of greenhouse gas emissions û lies at the heart of the structure and size of modern economic activity. Greenhouse gas emissions are embedded in our way of life from our energy consumption patterns to the basic production of food. Moreover, the costs of the impacts of climate change to the earth will be potentially revolutionary, not merely evolutionary. It is in this light, acknowledging both the seriousness and nature of the problem before us that I want to reflect on the key drivers in the international climate change negotiations. A consideration of the past, present and future from what I see as the mid-way point in the process. In 1997, Parties agreed to adopt the Kyoto Protocol, which sets out mandatory targets for greenhouse gas emissions for developed countries.

Spiral concentrator is one of the most commonly used gravity concentration devices in mineral processing. The particles are classified based on their specific gravity and size. The present work analyses the experimental and numerical investigations of the water flow field, such as fluid depth and free surface primary velocity of two high gravity spiral concentrators at different flow rates. The measurement techniques use a flow depth gauge and flow visualisation technique adapting lycopodium powder as the tracer. Flow features in terms of liquid depth and primary velocity at the free surface of the flow are captured across the trough in two different high gravity spirals. A highspeed motion camera with an imaging frequency of 5400 frames per second and 768 × 768 pixel resolution is utilised to track the tracer particles in the liquid flow on the dark surface background. Further, the two-phase flow is studied numerically on high gravity spirals based on the volume of fluid (VOF) approach utilising the RNG k-ε model and Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) for predicting the fluid flow on trough surfaces such as water depth and free surface primary velocity. The CFD predictions of the flow field for the two spirals are attempted to validate against experimental data. The high gravity spiral concentrators show lower flow depths and free surface primary velocities but steep velocities on the outer trough zone compared to that of low gravity spiral concentrators (conventional coal spirals). Among the computationally tested high gravity spirals, higher pitch and higher secondary slope design shows greater flow characteristics.

investigations have been undertaken into the flow characteristics of mineral slurries from a number of Australian metallurgical plants including Mount Isa Mines Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and Broken Hill South Ltd. Experimental equipment installed for this work included facilities for continuous recording of flow rate and pressure drop and detection of sedimentation.Although the method has subsequently been described in published literature, it is believed that the investigations included the original application of a method for correlation of the flow rate and pressure drop data. This method depends on solving by graphical methods the values of the constants k, and c in the relationship EQUATION 1 where D is pipe diameter; ?P, pressure drop; L, length; and V, mean linear velocity. Discussion of this correlation also reveals why sedimentation velocity does not necessarily vary greatly with pipe diameter.INTRODUCTIONIn order to design pumps and pipeline installations for a Newtonian fluid, measurements of the fluid's density and viscosity in any of a number of instruments are sufficient. Tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits are under-represented in Australia’s inventory of known resources of this deposit type, relative to regions globally with comparable geology. To support discovery of major new deposits, a continental scale analysis of Australia’s potential for tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits is being undertaken. The analysis applies a mineral systems approach to map the four essential components of the ore-forming systems:1. sources of ore constituents2. crustal and mantle lithospheric architecture3. energy sources or drivers of the ore-forming systems4. gradients in ore depositional physico-chemical parameters.The results reveal several regions of Australia with potential for discovery of large tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits, mostly around the margins of Archean and Proterozoic lithospheric blocks. This research concerns the mineralogical study of the physico-chemical reactions taking place at the pozzolan-binder interface. Lime binder/ pozzolan mixtures have been prepared for different natural zeolites. Analcime, phillipsite, chabazite, erionite, mordenite and clinoptilolite were mixed with portlandite and water, after which the progress in the reaction was quantitatively determined by thermogravimetrical analyses from three to 180 days. A first and important step was the thorough characterisation of the raw materials by quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscope energy- dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) measurements of the zeolite minerals, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) specific surface area measurements, grain-size analyses and cation exchange capacity measurements. Beside these zeolite samples with varying Si/Al ratios, two clinoptilolite samples exchanged to the calcium, potassium and sodium form were studied and the difference in their short- and long-term reactivity was assessed. Also the difference in reactivity between identical clinoptilolite samples ground to different grain sizes, obviously having different specific surface areas, was determined experimentally. The results indicate that the external surface area only influences the short-term reactivity, whereas the cation content has effect on both long- and short-term. Na-exchanged samples combine clearly more portlandite in the first few days, whereas the reaction slows down afterwards compared to K- and Ca-exchanged samples. The early reactivity of the unexchanged zeolite samples could be explained by these two parameters, but their long-term reactivity seemed to be related to their Si/Al ratio. Samples with zeolites rich in Si reacted faster then their Al-rich counterparts.

Ore deposits of rare earth elements (REE) in South-East Asia are classified into four types: carbonatite, allanite, ion-adsorption and placer. Occurrences of the carbonatite deposits are confined almost exclusively to the Red River Fault Zone of northern Vietnam. Since the carbonatites contain dominantly REE fluorocarbonates (eg bastnasite) and lesser amounts of monazite, they are rich in light REE but poor in heavy REE. The ion-adsorption type deposits and prospects were found in Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. The ion-adsorption ores generally show lower REE grades than those of the carbonatite type and placer deposits; however, they could be enriched in HREE, which are more precious and scarce commodities than LREE. The ores consist of weathered granites with a significant amount of ion-exchangeable REE, which are extracted by using a dilute electrolyte solution. The ion-exchangeable REE are likely to be sourced from REE fluorocarbonates, allanite and titanite because these minerals are relatively susceptible to weathering and release REE3+ ions into soil water. In contrast, monazite and xenotime are resistant to chemical weathering and could form placer ores. Placer monazite and xenotime have been processed as by-products of placer Sn, Zr or Ti in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, although the current production is small.CITATION:Sanematsu, K, 2015. The Truong Son fold-thrust belt (TSFTB) is a prominent tectonic component of mainland Indochina that occurs as a north-west–south-east-trending tectonic entity that extends from north-eastern Laos, straddles the Laos-Vietnam border area and is submerged under the sea basin in east central Vietnam. The TSFTB hosts numerous regional-scale gold and polymetallic base metal deposits, and the mineralisation occurs along the strike of the belt; however, the potential of many of these deposits are inadequately evaluated. The ore mineralisation is hosted by different rock assemblages, including highly metamorphosed Late Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks and Palaeozoic sedimentary and/or volcanic packages, which were intruded by several phases of magma and underwent a number of tectonic events. Several ore-forming styles – including porphyry, Carlin-type and sediment-hosted orogenic Au – were formed during at least two phases of regional thermotectonism that have been identified in the TSFTB. However, all of the major gold deposits/mineralisations are closely related to region-wide structural breaks and many of them are controlled by large-scale, high-strain zones. PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), operating in the Ertsberg Mining District in the Province of Papua, is developing the Grasberg Block Cave copper-gold mine. The site aims to output 160 000 t/d and will be located underneath the current Grasberg Open Pit. Initial studies of the potential to develop a block cave mine in the Grasberg orebody have revealed that the mine will require significant volumes of air. The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) project requires four primary fans (3750 kW each) to support production at full capacity.Fan #1 commissioning was accomplished successfully on 9 February 2012. However, Fan #2 chamber, which is separated by a 20 m pillar, had not been completed. The main challenge was Fan #2 chamber still needed to be benched. The risk of damage to the critical infrastructure in Fan #1 chamber, including ground support, cracks in pedestals, and misalignment in the impeller shaft were considered. The challenges were blasting the bench without damaging the surrounding infrastructure, completing the work safely and meeting the schedule. This was achieved with the engineering control methodology. The paper describes challenges the author has encountered on Australian underground gold and nickel mines over the last eight years, when recovering high-grade gold/nickel bearing mine floor material with a mobile supersucker/giant vacuum cleaner and other equipment. Whilst for a number of years the mine floor vacuuming and other mine floor clean-down technologies have been accepted/adopted and are working well in other parts of the world and on the South Australian opal mines, regrettably, they have not yet gained acceptance of mining executives and mine managers of gold and metal mines in Australia, who still elect to leave the never to be recovered gold/metal behind or to put it plainly - waste it.For reporting purposes during the mining process, the portion of gold/metal included in calculation of ore reserves prior to obtaining capital funds for their development, continues to be camouflaged in various reconciliation and call factors. This approach, ie wasting of capitally developed and already broken ore stocks should be viewed by the shareholders as totally inappropriate to say the least, especially with the current gold and other metals prices.The author attempts to provide answers as to why the technology referred to above has not yet been accepted on Australian gold and metal mines and outlines the way forward.CITATION:Biegaj, K, 2012. The chemical oxidation kinetics of sphalerite by Fe(III) was studied at various temperatures and size fractions in sulphate media. The kinetics of Zn extraction followed a pore diffusion control mechanism with an apparent activation energy of 54-58 kJ mole. This figure, although high for a pore diffusion control process, is consistent with other studies carried out in sulphate media. An empirical statistical model, relating the extraction time to % Zn extraction, average particle size and temperature, is described by log 1 = 12.22 - 0.017% Ext. - 1.76 log D Av t - 2954 T Parallel studies were also carried out investigating the biological oxidation of sphalerite utilizing the acidophilic autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus Ferroxidans. The effect of such kinetic parameters as pulp density, particle size and Fe(III) on bacterial growth rate and consequently zinc extraction rate, were studied and where appropriate, optimum conditions for bacterial growth were specified. Based on the results of chemical and biological leaching studies, it was apparent that rapid zinc extraction from sphalerite was predominently due to oxidation by Fe(III). The biological oxidation process catalyses the oxidation and regeneration of Fe(III). The proposed combined chemical-biological leach system was simulated in semi continuous fashion. Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. Ferrous chloride solution pyrohydrolysis is a successful IICI regeneration process which is carried out in either a spray roaster or a fluid bed. Pyrohydrolysis is not restricted to ferrous chloride only, every metal chloride can theoretically be hydrolysed. In practice, however, the conditions for ferrous chloride pyrohydrolysis differ from those of many non-ferrous metal chlorides eg zinc, lead and cadmium. Hence, a pyrohydrolyser could function as a ferrous/non-ferrous separator, eg an iron oxide and zinc chloride separator. Most pyrohydrolysers operate on solutions, in which case more than 50 per cent of the process energy is needed for heating and evaporating water. However, this disadvantage would be diminished by feeding a slurry to the reactor. Against this background it was decided to investigate the chloridisation of zinc ferrite which is an iron bearing solid with a non-ferrous impurity, and subject to processing and disposal problems. Synthetic zinc ferrite was chloridised in a tube furnace. The gas atmosphere in the tube furnace resembled that of a fluid bed pyrohydrolyser and consisted of HCI, 1120 and nitrogen. Gas composition, temperature, residence time and sample mass were varied. The experiments showed that complete (99.6 per cent) zinc extraction from synthetic zinc ferrite was possible in a simplified pyrohydrolyser atmosphere at 1100 K in four hours. The zinc ferrite was converted into gaseous zinc chloride, and hematite and magnetite solids. Measurements of coulombic efficiency (QE) for zinc electrodeposition were carried out under mass-transfer-controlled conditions using a rotating disc electrode in synthetic acidic zinc sulphate solutions. Various methods of solution preparation and purifi- cation were investigated using reagents vary- ing from analytical grade to high purity; the purest solution was obtained-by dissolving 99.9999% zinc (Koch-Light) in sulphuric acid solution (BDH Aristar). Improvements in sol- ution purity did not necessarily increase QE, especially where apparently beneficial impur- ities (e.g., Pb) were initially present. The maximum QE obtainable through variation of temperature (T), current density-(i) and elec- trode rotation rate was established using a statistical optimization technique. The QE was determined principally by T and i, with significant interaction between these factors in the highest purity solution. QE contours, which gave an overall view of solution per- formance, were constructed and predictions about the response under conditions similar to plant practice were made. Wark's Rule (the dependence of QE on zinc/acid ratio) was obeyed in the purest solution over the range of composition commonly encountered in zinc plants. High concentrations of Na2SO4 and K2SO4, which occur in some plant solutions, were found to increase QE marginally ("1.2%). The intrinsic effects of individual impurities such as Cu and Ni were evaluated by additions (up to 5 ppm) to the purest solution. Decreases in QE were found to be minimal at the impurity levels normally encountered in zinc plants.

Comprehensive occupational health and safety legislation in Australia is comparatively recent. It follows the examples set in U.S.A. and U.K. a decade or more ago. In Western Australia the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act was proclaimed in April 1985. It still has a long way to go before it achieves all its objectives. The mining industry has developed a substantial body of health and safety regulations under the Mines Regulation Act. Considerable practical expertise in such matters already exists, much of it developed from hard won experience. As a result it would prefer not to become engulfed in the new legislation. It would prefer to build upon the cooperatively developed policies and workable practices in the field of occupational health and safety with which it is familiar. Associated Minerals Consolidated Ltd. is a leading mineral sands producer in Western Australia and has continuously developed its occupational health and safety policy and practices. Under the banner of "Resource Control", AMC seeks to provide a safe and healthy working environment at all times. This is being achieved through a strategy of a policy, a defined organisational structure and a detailed programme, which together comprise the "Resource Control System". Some of the activities and achievements of AMC in the field of occupational health and safety are compared with the objectives of contemporary legislation, and details of some of the specialised areas of the Resource Control Programme are discussed. The paper will also highlight and discuss impractical areas of potential legislation.

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. "Large-scale mine reclamation has taken place recently in response to the implementation of mining regulations in China. Effective monitoring of the progress of reclaimed land is a critical procedure to assess the quality of reclamation program and to ensure that mining enterprises fulfill their reclamation responsibilities. The present paper reports a preliminary study that examines the situation of mine land reclamation monitoring. Based on the monitoring, some general requirements for mined land reclamation have been proposed, including: the monitoring should be systematic and comprehensive the monitoring should be adapted to specific local conditions the monitoring should be reasonably optimised via scientific methods and technology the monitoring should stick to a variety of national technical criteria.The aim of land reclamation monitoring is to evaluate changes of critical indicators closely reflecting the development trend of the reclaimed mined land, to develop or improve the criteria and technical parameters specific to the site, and to prevent secondary environmental degradation. Based on these requirements and aim, the monitoring should cover the progress of reclamation, establishment of vegetation and plant community development; and recovery of land and water quality in the reclamation area. Bio-Oxidation of Arsenic and Stibium Bearing Gold Ores Bio-oxidation of arsenic and stibium bearing gold ores with acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied. The preoxidation results show that the best bio-oxidation technical parameters are the initial pH in the range of 1.8 ~ 2.0, particle sizes under 0.074 mm, temperature in the range of 25¦C ~ 30¦C and rotating speed of the orbital incubator in 100 rpm ~ 160 rpm. The leaching results show that If the ore, of which contain 10.37 per cent arsenic and 36.81 per cent stibium, is not bio-oxidised, gold leaching is only about 41 per cent, after 8 days oxidised, the result is about 76.55 per cent, which improved about 35.62 points. The relationship between gold leaching and arsenic oxidation is direct proportion, furthermore, it needs only partly oxidise and higher gold leaching could be get, for example, gold leaching is over 90 per cent when asenic oxidation is 60 per cent. The results will provide theoretical and technological supports of bio-oxidation arsenopyrite for pretreating refractory gold ores.

The Pine Creek Inlier produced 12 440 kg of gold in the period from the first gold discovery in the 1860s to the early-1900s. During the 1930s renewed large-scale prospecting took place and gave a foothold for today's gold mining operations. The rise of the gold price and improved mining methods in the 1970s and 1980s made possible low cost, bulk low grade mining operations. Various gold deposits including vein, network and stratiform types occur in the Pine Creek Inlier (Nicholson and Eupene, 1990). The Tom's Gully deposit is located 100 km south-east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. It is hosted in the early Proterozoic Wildman Siltstone and lies north-east of 1800 my old Mt Bundey Pluton (Figure 1). Around the Mt Bundey Pluton, there are several prospective base and precious metal deposits such as Quest 29. The Tom's Gully gold deposit was discovered in 1986 and yielded a total of 3070 kg of gold from ore averaging 9.35 g/t gold between 1987 and 1990 when the mining operation was terminated.

Rope guides, consisting of ropes spanning between anchor points at the top and bottom of shafts, have frequently been considered as a viable alternative to fixed guides, comprising buntons and guides. However, their design has generally been based on empirically derived rules, arising from European hoisting practice of 50 to 100 years ago. This paper describes a recent technology development project aimed at defining and quantifying the important forces acting on rope guided conveyances, calculating the resulting displacement of the conveyances and assessing whether the displacements are acceptable or not. The paper describes the derivation of aerodynamic force coefficients based on CFD analyses and other significant forces acting on the conveyance and rope system. The conveyance displacements may be calculated using computer simulation of the mechanical system, or approximately using simplified equations given in the paper. Measurements taken to confirm the suitability of the proposed formulation are described. The combination of displacements and assessment of the rope guide system design are proposed, based on the ratio of design clearances and the predicted displacements.
