IDENTIFICATION Of the kinds of orientation relationships that may exist among crystals is an important problem in the metallurgical field. As an aid to its solution standard orientations of several orders of twins would be very useful for rapid analyses to discover high-order as well as low-order twin relationships. Although data have been published that give orientations for three generations of twins, these data are not readily useful in the form presented; i.e., in a stereographic projection with one pole per orientation.1 However, accurate data based on calculations of the positions of all {100} planes for such groups would be very useful when presented in tabular form. Therefore, calculations have been made for a group of four orders of twins and the data are listed in Table 3. Illustrative applications are considered briefly, with the idea of pointing out what may be done with large groups of orientations. METHOD OF COMPUTING ORIENTATION OF A TWIN It is common practice to describe the orientation of a crystal in terms of the positions on a stereographic net of the poles of certain planes of the crystal. A single position on a net may be given it terms of two angle variables, two sets of which appear in the following equations: [Polar NetWalff Net x=rsinOocos4pyx=rcos0. y=rsinB,sin4,ny-rsin0.cos¢,, z=rcos0,,z=rsin0.sin4,,] The three numbers x, y and z determine a length r as well as a direction [(0, 0)] in an X, Y, Z coordinate system. In the present case, r will be set equal to (h2 + k2 +12)1/3, where h, k and 1 are the usual Miller indices for a crystallographic plane, a restriction that facilitates determination of the positions of poles of new planes from those of old or known ones,2 as will become evident later. Furthermore, since twinned lattices have certain planes in common, it is an easy matter to determine the orientation of a twin of a crystal if the orientation of the crystal itself is known. We start therefore with a crystal of known orientation (positions of three {100} poles given) and determine where the cube poles occur in first, second, third and fourth-order twins. Methods for identifying twinned lattices and for making the calculations to find the orientation of a twin have been published.3 4 Reference 4 will be illustrated in the calculation of the orientation of a twin, even though this method differs from the one used by the writer in obtaining the following data on four orders of twins. The method is largely graphical, and requires relatively little calculation. It can be used with materials containing large amounts of clay, or excess fines of any kind. The surface area S is expressed in terms of square meters per 100 c.c. of solids. This expression is based upon volume rather than weight, and is considered to be more suitable for crushing and grinding problems, where the machines ordinarily are operated under constant volume conditions. It has the advantage that surface areas of different materials can be compared directly, even though their specific gravities may be unknown. The "specific surface" of a material, or the number of square centimeters of surface area per gram, is equal to 100S divided by the specific gravity. Particle diameters are expressed in microns, K being the diameter of the largest particle present and L the grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding. The value of K does not always coincide exactly with the diameters of the largest particles retained on the coarsest testing sieve, since the largest particles formed in crushing and grinding are often slabby, or have other irregular shapes. L has been chosen as 0.700 microns, or number 27.5 in the size number series, for reasons to be explained later. S is the total surface area of all particles larger than L microns in diameter. When a homogeneous comminution product is separated into fractions whose diameters bear a constant geometrical relationship p to each other, and the log per cent weight retained upon each size and passing the next larger size is plotted against the log diameter, a straight line results, which is called the distribution line, and which has a slope in called the distribution modulus. The distribution line can be extended to any desired limiting size, and the total surface area of all particles larger than that size can be calculated. The equation of the distributi0n line is [w = Cx" [I]] where w is the per cent weight retained on each successive sieve; x is the particle diameter; and C is the per cent weight retained on an opening of unit diameter.2 Theoretically, the distribution line can be extended to include infinitely small particles. When it is so extended, and the assumption is made that no fine particles are present other than those accounted for by the equation; the log per cent cumulative weight passing any series of sizes, plotted against the log diameter passed, will result in a straight line lying parallel to and above the plotted distribution line.

The destruction of long-range order in Mg-Cd, has previously been thought to occur as a second order process. In the present work a variety of X-ray diffraction techniques are employed to show that in this case and in Mg-Cd alloys containing frorn 20 to 33 1/3 at. pct Mg the process more nearly resembles an ordinary first order phase transformation. It is found that the ordered alloy, which occurs as a single phase at lgw temperatures, transforms with increasing temperature into a Cd-enriched disordered (P) phase and an Mg-enriched ordered (a) phase. The interval over which these two phases coexist under apparently equilibrium conditiovs extends from 25" to 87°C content. At 33 1/3 at. pct Mg the two-phase region has disappeared. Measurement of the long range order parameter, s, for the ordered phase in MgCd, (from superlattice line intensities) shows that it disorders only very slightly before it is transformed into the p form. Kinetic experiments reveal that when the a phase is formed frorn the p phase by suitably quenching so as to suppress phase segregation, the transformation is essentially complete and the a phase has acquired its equilibrium value of S in less than 1 min. In an earlier investigation carried out in this Laboratory1 the rate of disordering of the MgCd3 superlattice was determined over an extensive range of temperature. The process was found to be first order and the rate constant, k, was established. At the lowest temperatures studied k was found to increase exponentially with temperature. At higher temperatures, however, it passed through a maximum and for the 100 deg interval below the point at which the superlattice was destroyed k was observed to decrease with increasing temperature. The various theoretical treatments1-3 of order-disorder phenomena lead to a negative temperature coefficient for k near the superlattice critical temperature but this region for MgCdB seemed unusually wide. Detailed analysis of the point indicated' that either the long-range order parameter, S, for MgCda varied with temperature in an anomalous way or the disordering in this instance is more complex than in the cases which have been treated theoretically. The original objective in the present work was simply to determine S vs temperature for MgCda to ascertain whether the disordering was in conformity with theoretical expectations.2° In an early stage of the work it was noted, however, that under equilibrium conditions ordered (a) and disordered (0) phases coexist in MgCd, over a considerable range of temperature. Since on thermo- dynamic grounds the coexisting phases must differ in composition, the investigation was enlarged to permit the compositions of the two phases in MgCd3 to be determined and to establish the extent of the two phase regions for alloys containing from 20 to 33 1/3 at. pct Cd.

"The 100,000 volt sub-station at Butte is located near the center of the district in which the power is distributed. The sub-station building is 150 feet by 50 feet in plan and 50 feet high. It is a brick walled, steel framed structure with concrete floors and roof.There are installed at present four banks of single-phase transformers, rated at 3,600 k-w. per bank and connected in delta on both high and low tension sides. They step the voltage down from 102,000 to 2,500, at which voltage it is distributed to customers. The transformers are installed in fireproof compartments, entirely shut off from the rest of the building by brick walls and opening only out of doors. The transformers are mounted on wheels and can readily be run out onto a flat car, which stands on a track running parallel with the building in front of the row of transformer compartments. This arrangement furnishes a convenient method of handling the transformers, both at the time of installation and afterward, in case it is necessary to make repairs."

The International Mining Convention held in Nelson, B; C., May 17 , to 19, was attended by nearly 500 delegates, of whom about 100 were from Spokane, 150 from the Slocan district, and the others from different points in Canada and the United States. Arrangements were in charge of the Nelson, Slocan and Eastern British Columbia Mining Men's Club, under the direction of Secretary Fred A. Starkey, assisted by the City of Nelson, Associated Boards of Trade of Eastern British Columbia and Nelson Board of Trade. The Columbia Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers; cooperating with the Western Branch of the Canadian Mining Institute, provided the technical program, under the management of Secretary E. The fabrication of p-n junctions in GaAsl-,P, alloys by a vapor-phase gowth technique has for the first tirne resulted in room-temperature injection lasers capable of operating over a broad range of wavelengths extending into the visible region of the spectrum. The shortest wavelength achieved to date is 6750A at room tetnperature. In addition, at 78°K the threshold current density values for these lasers are generally the lo~vest reported, and the emitted radiation extends to the lozc,est wavelength ever attained (6350A). With lasers fabricated from material containing 14 pct Gap, quanticm efficiencies of 26 pct and peak power outputs of 25 zu were obtained at room temperature. ALTHOUGH room-temperature operation of GaAs injection lasers has been well-documented,&apos;-5 the operation of GaAsl-,P, (x > 0) laser diodes has been restricted to relatively low temperatures.8-&apos;0 This has been previously attributed5, 7, 10-12 partially to the difficulty of preparing single-crystalline GaAsl-& alloys having a high degree of chemical homogeneity and purity. Also, with these materials it has been difficult to prepare high-quality, abrupt p-12 junctions by diffusion techniques; and, in turn, this has made it difficult to obtain optimum electrical properties for room-temperature operationL3 in the resulting laser diodes. As a result, GaAsl-,P, laser diodes have not been efficient enough to permit operation at room temperature. For example, using diffused structures, only a few diodes were obtained which could be operated even close to room temperature (255K)." Recently, a vapor-phase growth method of preparing epitaxial deposits of GaAsl - .P, alloys has been described,14 and the high-purity and homogeneity of these materials has been previously demonstrated. Of special significance, with this technique, n- or p -type doping can be initiated or discontinued at any time and at almost any rate during the crystal growth so that the donor and the acceptor concentrations can be easily controlled to obtain desired impurity profiles. This permits high-quality, abrupt p-TZ junctions to be vapor-phase grown entirely during the crystal growth process, so that diffusion or other p-n junction fabrication processes are unnecessary. After growth, the device does not have to be heated to elevated temperatures, which avoids the possible unwanted introduction and motion of both impurities and lattice defects. Using the vapor-phase growth method cited above, over 300 room-temperature injection lasers have been prepared from GaAsl-,P, alloys having compositions in the range of 0 5 x 5 0.41. These lasers have emitted cohe~ent radiation in the spectral range of 8350 to 6350A at 78°K or from 9000 to 6750A at room temperature. The threshold current densities of the best lasers are independent of the alloy composition over the range 0 < x < 0.2 and compare favorably with values for good GaAs lasers.&apos; MATERIAL PREPARATION Multilayer, epitaxial deposits of GaAsl-,P, alloys are prepared by a vapor-growth technique described elsewhere.14 With this technique, the individual layers which comprise the multilayer structure are prepared sequentially in the deposition apparatus without interrupting the crystal growth. The epitaxial layers are deposited on GaAs substrate surfaces oriented normal to the ( 100) direction. The substrate wafers employed in this study were usually doped with tellurium to an electron concentration of approximately 2 x 10" per cu cm. To avoid strains, the first 10 to 15 p of the deposited material is uniformly graded from pure GaAs to the specific GaAsl- ,P, alloy composition of interest. The GaAsl - ,P, alloy growth is then continued to form a layer of constant composition having a thickness in the range of 25 to 75 p. Both the graded region and the layer of constant composition are doped with selenium to an electron concentration of about 2 x 10" per cu cm. The p region of the diode is then incorporated in the crystal by abruptly changing the dopant concentrations in the vapor phase to facilitate doping with zinc. This layer has a hole concentration of approximately 3 X 1019 per cu cm and typically is 50 p thick. DEVICE FABRICATION In general, the GaAs substrate and the region of graded composition are removed. Ohmic contacts are made to the n-type side by tin evaporation and to the p-type side by an electrodeless nickel deposition. This is followed by an electrodeless deposition of gold on both sides. The crystal wafer is then cleaved along (110) planes and sawed into rectangular parallelepipeds. Typical dimensions are 100 by 300 for the junction area and 100 µ for the diode height. The diodes are either soldered to a copper stud or pressure-mounted in a copper clip. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Approximately 400 laser diodes having compositions in the range of 0.41 have been prepared by the method described above. Each laser was routinely tested at liquid-nitrogen temperature. The lasers were operated with l-psec current pulses at a repetition rate of 60 pulses per sec. The parameters of greatest practical interest are the photon energy or wavelength of the laser output and the threshold current density. Fig. 1 shows the variation of photon energy with alloy composition at 78°K. The composition was determined from the lattice constant of the material obtained by X-ray back-reflection measurements. The magnetization curves for specimezs containing superparmagnetic particles are considered. It is shown that the curves may differ from a Langezlin function because of particle anisotropy, particle interactions , and the presence of a size distribution of particles. The various causes of particle anisotropy are considered, and magnetization curves for specimens with cubic and uniaxial anisotropy are presented. The magnetization curves depend on the In the particle-size below 100A it is quite difficult to obtain quantitative size and shape information on precipitate particles. All of the available techniques have their limitations; however, quantitative applications of superparmagnetism have not been developed as fully as possible due to a lack of analysis of the complete magnetization curve. With such an analysis it appears possible to obtain from a single magnetization curve of a specimen containing randomly oriented SPM (superparamagnetic) particles a quantitative volume distribution and a description of the particle shape.* sign of the anisotropy energy and in the case of a negative uniaxial anisotropy (prolate spheroids) the resulting curves may differ very considerbly from a Langevin function. A graphical technique is developed whereby it is possible to separate out the effects of the size distribution, the particle interaction, and the particle anisotropy. Thus it is possible to obtain quantitative values for both the particle shape and the size distribution. Langevin function2 I/Is = ctnh(HVIs/k T)-k T/HVIS [ 1 ] where I, is the saturation magnetization, V the particle volume, H the applied field, T the particle temperature, k the Boltzmann constant, and I the magnetization in the direction of the applied field. Such behavior is rarely if ever observed in actual systems. One explanation for this is that the SPM particles do possess a significant anisotropy and thus the magnetic energy associated with the particle depends on the direction of magnetization in a more complicated way than for the isotropic particle of Eq. [I]. In general the magnetic energy E of an isolated SPM particle embedded in a nonmagnetic matrix can be expressed as a sum of several contributions: E = Eh + Ed+Es+Ec [2] where Eh is the external field energy, Ed the energy resulting from the particle demagnetizing factor, E, the magnetostriction energy, and E, the crystalline anisotropy energy. In each term we consider only the part dependent on the orientation of the magnetization vector and the particle axes as the shape of the magnetization curve will be determined by these contributions. Following the same procedure used in deriving the Langevin function,

(written discussion ?).-There are several points in. connection with the manufacture of ferromanganese in the electric furnace which it seems to me. might prove of interest in this connection. Recent observation of a, number of electric furnaces varying considerably in size and transformer capacity, and all working under the same conditions, shows the small furnaces to be much more efficient in operation than the large furnaces. The furnaces examined were all of the same type. The crucibles consisted of tanks varying in size from 71-z by 15 ft. by 4 ft. deep, to 12 by 20 ft. by 9 ft. deep, with linings formed of carbon electrode butts. The smaller furnaces had transformer capacity rated at 1500 k.v.a.; the largest furnace had a transformer rated at 3000 k.v.a. All of the furnaces were operated on three-phase, 60-cycle current, the three electrodes being in a straight line. The voltages varied from 65 volts in the smaller to 100 volts in the larger furnaces. The charges consisted of manganese ore, coal, iron turnings, and limestone in proper proportions. The small furnaces, operating at low voltage, were making good recoveries. The slag loss was low and the volatilization loss almost nil. The larger furnaces, operating at higher voltages, showed increased loss of manganese in the slag and greatly increased volatilization loss when working on the same charges as the smaller furnaces, or on charges similarly calculated. The exact reasons for this state of affairs are difficult to state; a number of factors probably contribute to the results obtained in the large furnaces. First as to the effect of the higher voltage on manganese content of the slags. Increasing the voltage of the furnaces apparently tends to promote irregular working. The current takes the path of least resistance; this means superheating in certain areas in the crucible and insufficiently high temperatures in adjoining areas. The partially reduced manganese in the cooler areas passes into the slag and escapes further reduction.

THE angles between the crystallographic planes in cubic crystals have been given by Bozorth,¹ in magnesium, zinc, and cadmium by Salkovitz,² and in tin by Nicholas. The determination of the orientation of single crystals and the study of plastic deformation require the knowledge of these angles and are often facilitated by use of a standard projection. Tables of these angles and standard projections have not been published for titanium or zirconium which have c/a ratios considerably less than those hexagonal metals for which this data is available. Accordingly, Table I has been prepared giving these angles. Fig. 1 presents a standard (0001) projection of titanium. The angle between (h1k1i1l1) and (h2k2i2l2) was calculated by means of the formula: h1h2 + K1K2 + 1/2 (h1k2 + h2k1 + cos 4 = [(hi2 + K + h1k1 + 3/4 l12 (h2² + C" a² 3/4 — l1 l2 C² k2²+ h2k2 + 3/4 —l2²) ] 1/2 c² The c/a ratio for titanium is taken from the data

The effect of reducing oxygen to low concentrations on the fracture of high-purity iron single crystals has been examined at 78° and 20°K. It is found that iron single crystals grown by the strain-anneal method usually contain a few occluded grain boundaries which may become embittled in the presence of oxygen, thereby nucleating cleavage fractures. High purity with respect to interstitial elements was found to inhibit twinning and evidence is presented for an orientation dependence of the resolved yield stress. Deformation occurred by slip rather than twinning at both temperatures of testing with elongations of as much as 9 pct at 20°K. THE fracture properties of iron single crystals have been observedl-3 to be a function of temperature, orientation, and purity. Allen, Hopkins, and McLennan1 demonstrated that at 78°K iron single crystals became increasingly brittle as the tensile axis approached the (001) pole of the stereographic unit triangle. Iron crystals with the tension axis near a (001) pole were completely brittle and orientations near the (011)-(111) boundary were very ductile, achieving a 100 pct reduction in area prior to fracture. Later work of Biggs and pratt2 and of Edmondson3 demonstrated that by reducing the carbon content of the single crystals the transition between brittle and ductile failure at 78°K could be shifted to orientations nearer the (001) pole. Ed-mondson went further and pointed out that any mechanism which tended to increase the yield strength of the iron (i.e., carbon addition, pre-strain) also increased the tendency for brittle behavior at 78°K. Thus by a reduction of carbon content Biggs and Pratt were able to obtain ductile behavior to within 20 deg of the (001) pole, and Ed-mondson was able to obtain ductile behavior to within 26 deg of the (001) pole. Edmondson&apos;s material had a total interstitial content (carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen) of approximately 60 ppm and, although Biggs and Pratt reported no analysis, indications were that their iron contained comparable impurities. Stein, Low, and seybolt4 purified iron single crystals to a total carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen content of approximately 20 ppm. They observed a lowering of the yield stress with this increased purity, and thus one might have expected an observation of increased ductility. Although they tested specimens of orientations which the previous workers had indicated should be ductile, the crystals failed at a 78°K in a brittle manner with little elongation. Stein noted,&apos; however, that about 90 pet of the failures could be traced in origin to occluded grains. Allen et al.1 and Edmondson3 do not report examination of their cleavage surfaces, but Biggs and pratt2 reported that microscopic examination of the cleavage surfaces of many of their specimens revealed the presence of small occluded grains. Honda and cohen6 and Keh7 have also observed the initiation of fracture at occluded grains in iron single crystals. Therefore, the additional complication of occluded grains must be considered in studying the properties of iron single crystals and the origin of fractures determined if the ductility exhibited by the crystals is to be considered meaningful. Various investigators8-12 have studied the effects of impurities on grain boundaries in high-purity polycrystalline iron. Rees and Hopkins10 showed that the addition of oxygen to low-carbon (0.002 pet) iron weakened the grain boundaries, causing a shift from transcrystalline to intercrystalline fracture and a progressive decrease on the brittle-fracture stress with increasing oxygen content. In addition, it has been shown by Low and Feustel11 that the addition of carbon to polycrystalline iron containing oxygen eliminated grain boundary brittleness. Thus, oxygen can embrittle grain boundaries in high-purity polycrystalline iron, but the addition of an appropriate amount of carbon can eliminate the oxygen-induced brittleness. The oxygen content (19 ppm) of the iron "single crystals" employed by Stein el al. was large enough to suspect impurity effects at the occluded grain boundaries. Allen et al.1 Biggs and pratt,2 and Edmondson3 may have masked any occluded grain problem in their specimens considering the relatively high carbon levels they employed. stein13 demonstrated that the addition of as little as 0.9 ppm C to previously purified (less than 5 x 10-3 ppm C) "single crystals" would increase the elongation from a few percent to more than 20 pet at 78°K and the fracture was not associated with grade boundary initiation.

A drop calorimeter system is described for use in measuring enthalpies to 3600°K. Data are presented for tungsten between 2800" and 3600°K. The enthalpy of tungsten in cal per mole between 2000° and 3600°K can be represented by the equation HºT- Hº298 = - 1.7622 X 103 + 5.7772T + 8.9861 where T is in degrees Kelvin. A tabulation of com -puted values is presented for heat capacity, entropy, and free energy function. A drop calorimeter has been constructed to carry out enthalpy measurements at temperatures to 3600°K. Samples are heated by induction1 and dropped into a commercial adiabatic calorimeter, modified for this purpose. The experimental temperature is limited by the melting point of container materials and compatibility of the container and its contents. Several high-temperature drop calorimeters have been described in the literature1-5 but none has been used at temperatures as high as those in the present work; our measurements of the enthalpy of tungsten range from 2800" to 3600°K. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT An overall schematic view of the equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Power for the induction coil is supplied by a 25-kw 250 kHz Ther-Monic generator coupled to an iron core RF transformer. The Sample capsule is suspended in the work coil by 10-mil diam tungsten wires which are wrapped around a horizontal 5-mil diam tungsten wire. The horizontal suspension wire is clamped between two massive copper electrodes which are fixed in an x-y motion device that allows adjustment of the position of the heated capsule from outside the vacuum chamber. The copper electrodes are connected by flexible copper straps to a 1250-joule (5 kv, 100 pfarad) condenser bank. When it is desired to release the capsule, the condensers are discharged through the horizontal suspension wire causing it to vaporize rapidly. Very reliable and precise release of the capsule is achieved in this manner. Experiments have shown that no heat correction is required for this discharge energy. As part of the temperature measuring system, two prism holders have been incorporated in the apparatus. The upper prism holder is in the main vacuum chamber itself, whereas the lower one is in a side arm attached to the drop tube below the gate valve. The upper prism is mounted on a rotary vacuum feed-through, and may be moved under a protective shield when not in use. This prevents deposition of vapors on the prism surfaces when temperature measurements are not being made. Similarly, the lower prism is mounted on a push-pull vacuum feed-through, and when not in use may be pulled into its side tube. The prism mountings are fitted with guides and stops so that they may be moved precisely into the desired position. The aim throughout is to minimize the time the prisms are exposed to vapors from the hot samples. At the high temperatures reported in this paper, only the lower prism was used. The upper prism holder in these cases was fitted with an additional radiation shield. By using a prism and viewport, the lower surface of the samples can be observed by an optical pyrometer. The measurements discussed in this paper were obtained with a Leeds and Northrup 8622-C-S series manual pyrometer which is estimated to be accurate to 0.5 pct. Pyrometer calibrations and prism and window corrections were carried out in the conventional manner6 using tungsten strip lamps calibrated by the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, England. Prism corrections were rechecked after each use. All work to date has been done in vacuum, and no measurable change has been observed in the prism correction below -2300°K for the upper prism and below -2800°K for the lower one. The total time of exposure of the prisms is about 50 sec per run. At high temperature, the final temperature reading is corrected by using the final A value for the prism; see Ref. 6 for details of this procedure. The calorimeter is a modified Parr Instrument Co. (Moline, lll.), Series 1230 adiabatic calorimeter with automatic jacket control. Other authors5 have used a similar calorimeter with good results. The calorimeter jacket cover and calorimeter cover are attached to the drop tube which contains a radiation shield. This shield is a gold-plated copper disc which can be operated manually from outside the calorimeter. The receiver is attached below the radiation shield and is lined with tungsten. In a typical experiment, the calorimeter and its jacket water temperatures were adjusted to 0.000°K temperature difference. The sample was allowed to equilibrate in the furnace at the desired temperature for about 20 min. The initial calorimeter temperature was then recorded, the sample dropped, and appropriate shutters closed. After about 3 min, the drop tube and receiver were filled with helium to 60 torr. The final calorimeter temperature was recorded after it had remained constant over a 5-min period. The equilibration time in the calorimeter was about 25 min. Thermistor probes are used to operate a hot and cold water supply system to maintain the jacket temperature equal to the calorimeter temperature. For actual measurements of the calorimeter temperatures, a quartz thermometer was used (Hewlett Packard Dymec Thermometer, Model #2801A). This thermome-

The relations between micros tructures and critical current density in transverse magnetic field were experimentally investigated due to each transformation of the 0 to 0&apos; + P" phases at 700&apos; C for superconductmainly examined using replication electron microscopy. The ß&apos; or a precipitates were found to pin down magnetic flux lines in these alloys. The effects of precipitation upon the critical current density were discussed in relation with the size, spacing, and characler of these precipitates. HIGH magnetic field superconductors, such as Nb-Zr, Nb-Ti, and Nb-Zr-Ti alloys, have been recently put to extensive practical use as winding materials for superconducting magnets.13 The critical current density of these hard superconductors under an applied magnetic field is an important characteristic for magnet materials and is very sensitive to metallurgical structure. It is generally known that the critical current density is increased by introducing dislocations and precipitates into a superconductor; that is, dislocations and precipitates are presumed to be barriers that hinder quantized flux lines from moving.4&apos;5 Theoretical6&apos;7 and experimental analyses of the motion of flux lines and the interaction between flux lines and various defects have already been reported by many authors. Metallographic analysis of high magnetic field superconductors such as Nb-Zr and Nb-Ti is difficult, so that no quantitative relationship between microstruc-ture and critical current density has been established yet. In this paper, the effect of precipitation on the critical current density in magnetic field was investigated for two superconducting alloys, Nb-40Zr-10Ti and Nb-5Zr-60Ti. In these alloys the resistive critical field H, at 4.2oK was about 100 kG and the critical current density Jc at 80 kG was of the order of 104 amp per sq cm.13-l5 The superconducting properties were examined in relation to the microstructural changes due to transformation of i) the ß to ß&apos; + ß" phases at 700°C for Nb-40Zr-10Ti alloy and ii) the ß to a + ß phases at 500°C for Nb-5Zr-6OTi alloy. The effect of size, spacing, and character of precipitates on flux line pinning was in particular examined. The microstructures were studied by means of residual resistivity, microhardness, and tensile strength measurements as well as by X-ray diffraction, optical, and replication electron microscopies. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Pure niobium, zirconium, and titanium, in the form of rods 0.8 cm in diam, served as raw materials. Results of chemical analyses of these rods are given in Table I. Ingots of the alloys, 0.4 cm in diam and 3 cm in length, were prepared by means of levitation melting, utilizing a copper mold in an argon-gas atmosphere. Samples from the ingot then were cold-worked by grooved mill to 0.2 cm in diam, heat-treated homogeneously (in the ß phase region) for 5 hr at 1100° in a vacuum of 1 x 106 Torr, and finally cold-drawn to 0.025 cm in diam. For heat treatments, samples were wrapped in niobium foil and sealed in an argon-gas atmosphere in fused quartz capsules. Water quenching was done after each heat treatment. Subsequently H-J, were performed at 4.2° by slowly transporting the current through the samples 4 cm long, under transverse magnetic field, until the least detectable resistive terminal voltage was observed. The resistive critical field H, was taken as the field at which 100 pv appeared at 4.2°K across a sample 3 cm in length, with a current of 5 ma. The critical temperature T, was measured by means of a conventional four-probe resistivity technique and taken as the temperature at which the sample resistance reached one-half of full restoration of the normal-state resistance with a current l ma flowing through a sample 2 cm in length. Precipitates were observed by means of optical microscopy and carbon replication electron microscopy. The etching solution consisted of 5 ml HF, 10 ml H2SO4 10 ml H2O2, and 50 ml H2O, and shadowed carbon replicas were examined in a itachi HU-11 electron microscope operated at 50 kv. X-ray diffraction photographs were taken by a 11.46-cm-diam Debye-Scher-rer camera using copper Ka radiation. The micro-hardness was measured under a load of 200 g using

The ductile fracturing process was studied in single-crystal and poly cvystalline aluminum deformed in tension over a temperature range from 295° to 4.2°K. At temperatures as low as 77°K, the fracture of "inclusion-free" material, including zone-refined aluminum, was by rupture (-100 pct RA). At 4.2 OK, fracture was brought on by adia-batic shear. Metallographic examination did not disclose any voids or slip-band microcracks, thus negating for inherently ductile metals any mechanism of void nucleation by vacancy condensation or of cracking due to dislocation pile-ups. In Izigh-purity aluminum not treated to be inclusion-free, fracture at temperatures as low as 45°K was of the double-cup type and a result of void formation. The reduction-of-area decreased as temperature was lowered, corresponding to the earlier appearance of voids. Such behavior was rationalized in terms of a larger increase, with decreasing temperature, in the .flow stress relative to the strength of the inclusion-matrix interface. Evidence for low-temperature adiabatic shear was found in discontinuous flow at 4.2"K, in the transition to a localized shear fracture at low temperatures, and in the suppression of shear fracture with an elastically hard pulling device. A simple analysis for the initiation of adiabatic shew permitted a general correlation of the various contributing factors. It has been pointed out that the duration of shear depends upon effective mass and elastic stiffness of the deformation system. Much information about ductile fracture has also been accumulated over this period, but only recently has an understanding of mechanism begun to appear. Ludwik,&apos; in 1926, first reported fracture in a tensile specimen starting with a central crack in the necked section. Since then, other studies have disclosed that such cracks may form by the coalescence of voids nucleated in this region where hydrostatic tension is highest.2-4 Rogers and Crussard et al.&apos; have emphasized void formation and reori-entation along localized shear bands as a mode of crack propagation. pines6 has considered the tensile rod as a bundle of fibers joined by weak interfaces, which subsequently separate to allow individual fiber contraction. The notion of cavity growth and coalescence by purely plastic processes was discussed by Cottrell: who added that the tensile reduction-of-area ought not to be sensitive to temperature. On the other hand, it has been observed that the reduction-of-area is greatly increased if tests are carried out at high temperaturesa or under high hydrostatic pressure.&apos; Fracturing anisotropy in wrought products lends support to the idea of void formation from preexisting flaws strongly aligned by earlier processing.&apos;&apos;-l2 There is evidence that many voids result from the fracturing of inclusions or separation at the inclusion-matrix interface Another possibility is that voids grow out of pore volume produced in the initial solidification and never fully removed in later working. In general, a structure 3f particles, pores, and weak interfaces can be expected, at least in materials of engineering interest. Vacancy condensation has been suggested as an alternative mechanism of void formation for materials considered to be inclusion-free.13 Yet experience has shown that tensile reduction-of-area increases with purity, to the extreme of rupture as so often observed in single crystals. Adiabatic shear has an important bearing on ductile fracture. It occurs when the decrease of flow stress, as a result of local temperature rise from heat generated during straining, becomes larger than the increase due to strain and strain-rate hardening. As demonstrated by experiments on punching of plates,14 a large temperature rise may be brought about by rapid straining. Adiabatic flow as a result of the high strain rate reached in an ordinary tensile specimen just prior to separation may account for the cone formation in cup-and-cone fracture;14 evidence of such local heating has been presented.15 For geometrical reasons, however, pure sliding along the conical surfaces is unlikely, and separation under tensile forces is probably an important accompanying feature of the shear.7 In deformation processing operations, a high shear-strain rate may exist at boundaries between plas-

A large room-temperature mechanical-hysteresis effect under cyclic tensile loading was observed in zivconium specimens prestrained at 77°K so as to form large numbers of (1121) twins. The observed hysteresis loss was a maximum when the prestrain was just under 1 pct It also depended strongly on the maximum applied cyclic stress, but only moderately on loading rate and temperature (-72°to 100°C). The phenotnena have also been studied in terms of the elastic aftereffect where the data has been found to cotlforln closely to the functional relationship between strain and time, c = -RT/a In tank ft. t to)/Zr, for strains cts large as about 10-4 This eyication can be derived directly from the strain-rate equation There may be important commercial implications to the present discovery since it appears that within rather wide limits it may be possible to obtain any desired magnitude of damping capacity in zirconium melal. The damping propevties may also be given directional characteristics. It is shown that the observed anelaslic phenomena can he explained on the assumiplion that they are the resuilt of stress-induced twin-boundary movements in which the average twin increases its thickness by only a few percent. In polycrystalline zirconium, a grain is least favorably oriented for slip when its basal plane, containing the (1130) slip directions, lies nearly perpendicular to the principle normal stress. Mechanical twinning is favored by this orientation and under simple tensile deformation at room temperature the primary twinning mode is {1012).&apos; The (1012) twinning shear is small (0.17) so that, during deformation, twin growth does not greatly enhance ductility. At 77°K, on the other hand, the predominant twinning mode shifts to {1121), and many thin (1121) twins can form at small strains.&apos; Twins thus nucleated can grow readily during subsequent room-temperature deformation and permit easy deformation in unfavorably oriented grains. In addition, the (1131) twinning shear is large: 0.63. These facts have lead to a process&apos; for greatly improving the room-temperature ductility of zirconium when it contains a sizable fraction of grains with basal planes nearly normal to the stress axis. Optimum results are obtained by slightly less than 1 pct prestrain. The effect is large so that a 50 pct elongation increase is readily attained. A large room-temperature mechanical-hysteresis effect has also been observed in zirconium specimens prestrained at 77°K. The present paper is concerned with some aspects of this effect which the experimental observations strongly indicate is primarily the result of strain-induced {1121) twin-boundary movements. This clearly suggests that mechanical twins formed by plastic deformation can cause anelastic effects similar to those previously observed2 for annealing twins and twins associated with phase transformations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All specimens were prepared from arc-melted sponge zirconium plate stock as previously described,3 which has a preferred orientation with basal planes aligned parallel to and uniformly distributed around the rolling direction. Both lonti-tudinal and transverse tensile specimens, with axes parallel and transverse, respectively, to the plate rolling direction, were cut from this plate. In a longitudinal specimen most grains are favorably oriented for slip, while in a transverse specimen a large fraction are unfavorably oriented. Prestraining at 77°K was performed in two ways. In one, annealed zirconium plate stock was cooled in liquid nitrogen and then rolled in the transverse plate direction to strains varying from 0.5 to 12 pct. Cylindrical 1/8-in.-diameter by 1-1/4-in.-gage-length tensile specimens were machined from this material. In the other, previously machined tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at 77°K between 0.2 and 3.8 pct. Type FA 25-12 SR4 strain gages were cemented to all specimen gage sections. All tests were performed on an Instron testing machine of 10,000-lb capacity. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows a typical two-cycle room-temperature stress-strain diagram for a specimen prestrained 0.65 pct by rolling at 77°K. The maximum stress in both cycles was 14,500 psi. Note that in the first cycle the loading and unloading curves are unsymmetrical so that a residual strain, er, remains after unloading. In the second cycle the stress-strain curves form a nearly symmetrical hystere-

MIXED emotions were produced by the announcement that the buildup of weapons will be stretched out till mid-1954 instead of the previous 1953 deadline. Reason: government assistance programs will be tougher to get but there will be easement in materials allocations. Earlier in February, DPA had announced that tightening up on regulations governing rapid tax -amortization would become effective March 1. In the future, DPA will have to certify amortization contracts for all construction and permanent installations costing more than $100,000. This action was necessary according to DPA&apos;s James F. King, so that new industrial expansions already approved could be assessed in the light of the changing critical mineral picture. When DMPA inherited the backlog of government assistance, requests from DMA, it moved in fast. The results of DMPA&apos;s work is described in the article on p. 351 by James K. Richardson; The speed with which these requests were approved and the lengthening of the military program have made a reappraisal of the critical mineral list necessary. It looks as though the consumer industries will be getting more metal soon and, led by steel, there is an industry push toward the abandonment of CMP. Relaxing of materials controls appears imminent but discontinuing CMP is in the "let&apos;s talk this thing over" stage.

Electrical-resistivity )measurments were made be-trueetz room temperatrive and 1.5 oK on five different stocks of cerium metal, and the results were correlated with the types, amounts, and distribution of the impurities present. Magnesium, which appeared to be distributed as a solute throughout the cerium matrix, was found to have a large effect on the residual resistivity, 1 at. pct Mg being sufficient to increase the residual resistivity by about 10 microhm-cm. The formation of ß by repeated thermal cycling between room temperature and liquid-helium temperature is attributed to the deformation and faulting that occurs during the ? D a transformation. In preparation for starting a proposed study of cerium-rich alloys, we examined samples from severa1 stocks of cerium metal in order to choose the purest stock for future use in making the alloys. Low-temperature electrical-resistivity data were used to gain initial information about the purities of the stocks. Additional information was subsequently obtained from chemical analyses, density measurements, optical metallography, and electron-micro-probe analyses. Cerium that has been annealed at high temperature and cooled to room temperature has the fee crystal structure (? phase) with a = 5.16Å. When cooled further, in the region between about 250" and 150°K, some of the fee phase transforms to the double hcp form (ß phase) with a = 3.68 and c = 11.92Å. The remainder of the room-temperature fee form (and perhaps some of the hexagonal phase) transforms electronically in the vicinity of 100° K to the more dense or "collapsed" fee form (a phase), a - 4.85A, by transferring about 0.5 electron per atom from the 4f level to the valence band. Very little work related specifically to the effects of impurities on the physical properties of cerium has been reported in the literature. Gaume-Mahn1, 2 has studied the effects of calcium, magnesium. iron, silicon, and tantalum on the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of cerium between 60o and 300°K. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald3 have discussed the effects of total impurity content on the hysteresis of the a —? (reversible) transformation and on the formation of the 4 and "a-? intermediate" phases. Smith and Morrice* have reported the effect of total impurity content on the resistivity of cerium at 4 and 293°K. In none of these reports, however, is it apparent that the distributions of the impurities were determined, L.r., whether the impurities were present in inclusions or in solid solution in the matrix is not mentioned; nor does it appear that the phase purity of the cerium was always considered. In the present study, five different stocks of cerium were involved. One was represented by a single sample of electrowon cerium, which was all that had remained from a stock of high-purity material obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Reno, Nev., in 1959. The other four stocks were recently purchased from commercial sources and were specified to be 99.9 wt pct pure. EXPERIMENTAL Cerium stocks designated as #1, #2, #4, and #5 were obtained from commercial suppliers for the specific purpose of finding a reliable source of high-purity cerium. Although the purity level of the cerium was specified to be 99.9 pet, the specifications did not include limits as to the amounts of various impurities that would be acceptable. Consequently the chemical analyses of the different stocks varied widely. Stock #3, which had been obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and which was the purest on the basis of chemical analyses, consisted of a single specimen of electrowon cerium. For some time I have been using with great advantage, for the purpose of determining rapidly and accurately the chemical composition of gases from Siemens producers, an apparatus arranged generally like that proposed by Prof. Eggertz; * and I now take pleasure in laying before the members of the Institute a description of the apparatus and its use, hoping that some of them may find it. of practical advantage. At the end of the paper are given some results obtained and heat calculations, with the necessary data for the same. COLLECTION OF GASES. Fig. 1. Shows the arrangement for taking a sample of gas. The funnel F, which may be made of tin plate, is made to fit the test-hole. The gas passes up through the funnel and through the rubber-tubing with the glass tube K, filled with asbestos for retaining dust,, and is drawn into the upper flask by means of water flowing from the same into the lower flask. The upper flask must be completely filled with water from the beginning, so that no air remains. When filled with gas the screw-compressors are securely fastened on, and the flask disconnected from the funnel and receiver. Quart flasks, with openings at the bottom, are very suitable, and easily obtainable. COMPOSITION OF THE GASES. The ingredients found in producer gases are: carbonic acid (CO2), oxygen (0)) ethylene (C2H4), carbonic oxide (CO), hydrogen (H), and marsh gas (CH4). The nitrogen is taken by difference. CO2,O,C2H4, and CO are determined by absorption in various liquids and by observing the resulting diminution of volume. H and CH4 are determined by combustion with oxygen. Carbonic acid.—For this gas is used a solution of 16 grams of potassium hydrate in 100 C.C. of water. 4 or 5 C.C. of this solution absorb 100 C.C. of CO2.

Pressure-temperature-composition data were obtainedfor the Er-H system. Measurements werecar-ried out in the temperature range of 473° to 1223°K, the composition range of erbium to ErH,, and the pressure range of 10-5 to 760 Torr. Solubility relationships were established from these data throughout the system. Three solid-solution phases were delineated: metal solid solution, dihydride phase, and trihydride phase. The trihydride Phase decomposes at about 656°K and 1 atm pressure. The dihydride phase is stable to about 1023°K, but becomes more deficient in hydrogen above this temperature. The equilibrium decomposition pressure-temperature relationships in the two-phase regions, erbium solid solution plus dihydride and dihydride plus trihydride, were deter- The differential heats of reaction in these two regions are AH = - 52.6 * 0.3 and - 19.8 i 0.2 kcal per mole of Hz, respectively. The differential entropies of reaction are AS = - 35.2 * 0.3 and - 30.1 * 0.4 cal per mole HZ.deg, respectively. Relative partial molal and integral thermodynamic quuntities were calculated in the system to the dihydride phase. RARE earth metal-hydrogen systems have been the subject of general survey,1"4 and all have been found to form hydride phases. The heavy rare earths, of which erbium is a member, form dihydride and trihydride phases with different crystal structures, whereas the light rare earths form only a single-phase dihydride which expands without structure change, as hydrogen is added, to the trihydride composition. These materials are of interest primarily because of their theoretical properties, such as bonding, defect structure, and thermodynamic and electronic characteristics. Erbium has been studied in several previous investigations.5, 6 It was deemed desirable to more thoroughly and accurately define the system, both for the phase equilibria and the thermodynamic properties. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Sieverts&apos; apparatus was employed to conduct the experimental measurements. Briefly, it consisted of a source of pure hydrogen, a precision gas-measuring buret, a heated reaction chamber, a mercury manometer, and two McLeod gages (a CVC, GM 100A and CVC, GM 110). Pure hydrogen was obtained by passing hydrogen through a heated Pd-Ag thimble. The hydrogen was analyzed and found to have only a trace of oxygen and nitrogen. A 100-ml precision gas buret graduated to 0.1-ml divisions was used to measure and admit hydrogen to the reaction chamber. The reaction unit consisted of a quartz tube surrounded by a nichrome-wound furnace. The furnace temperature was controlled by a recorder-controller to ±1°K. An independent measurement of the sample temperature in the quartz tube was made by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple situated outside, but adjacent to, the quartz tube near the specimen. Pressure in the manometer range was measured to ±0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10-4 to 10 Torr) to ±3 pct. The hydrogen compositions in erbium were calculated in terms of hydrogen-to-erbium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be ±0.01 H/Er. The erbium metal was obtained from the Lunex Co. in the form of sponge. The metal was nuclear grade with a purity of 99.9 pct +. The oxygen content was reported to be 340 ppm and the nitrogen not detectable. Metallographically the structure was almost free of second phase (<1 vol pct). A quantity of sponge was arc-melted for use as charge material. The solid material was compared with the sponge in the pressure-temperature-composition relationships. They were found to be identical. Therefore, sponge material was used henceforth, so that equilibrium could be attained more rapidly. The specimen size was about 0.2 grain for each loading of the reaction chamber. The procedure employed to obtain the pressure-temperature-composition data was to develop experimentally a family of isothermal curves of composition vs pressure. First, a specimen of erbium was wrapped in a tungsten foil capsule to prevent contact with the quartz tube. After loading the specimen, the system was evacuated to less than l0-6 Torr, flushed several times with high-purity hydrogen, and evacuated again ready for the start of the experiment. The furnace was then brought to the desired temperature. A measured amount of hydrogen was admitted into the chamber. Equilibrium was allowed to be attained, the pressure read, and the process then repeated many times until 1 atm of gas pressure was finally reached. Other isotherms were then developed in the same manner. The partial pressure plateaus were determined by another manner. In the solid solution-dihydride region a composition of approximately 1.0 H/Er was selected on the plateau. The temperature was varied throughout the range of interest. At each temperature level, equilibrium was achieved, the pressure read, and the next temperature attained. The temperature was cycled both up and down. In the dihydride-trihy-dride region, the plateaus were determined in the 473" to 651°K range only by heating to the desired temperature and not by both heating and cooling. The data were much more reproducible in this manner. Equilibrium required long periods of time. Specimens were initially hydrided to 2.8 H/Er, so that at the higher
