IT is generally agreed that cold-working mechanically refines the grains into smaller fragments and with continued working these are oriented with certain crystallographic directions bearing a relation to the direction in which the metal is worked. Some of the energy expended on the metal during plastic deformation appears in the form of heat, but a very small portion remains in the metal as stored energy. The entropy, specific heat capacity, temperature at which recrystallization will just begin, density, ductility, elasticity, tensile strength, and resistance to corrosion are affected. These properties have been studied extensively and some of the changes in the physical properties due to cold-working were attributed to lattice distortion.1-8 The broadening of the K. lines on the X-ray diffraction diagrams of plastically deformed metals is believed to indicate lattice distortion, and consequently the existence of internal stresses. The evidence supporting this theory rests solely upon the observed experimental fact that the dif-fraction lines are broadened and the K a doublets are completely diffused. Elam9 has reviewed the matter of lattice distortion in relationship to the hardening of metals by plastic deformation. The X-ray diagrams of plastically deformed metals differ in general from annealed metals. The hardening of a metal was believed due to lattice distortion.9 The resolu-tion of the doublet is lost when a metal is cold-worked and the Lane spots are elongated. At one time this elongation was thought to indicate the elastic bending of the crystal planes. However, more careful work showed that the asterism was due to new orientations developed within the fragmented grains during plastic deformation. Some theories attrib-uted the hardening to fragmentation of the grains into smaller units.

The behavior of mixtures of immiscible liquids in porous solids is of rapidly increasing interest to those engaged in the production of petroleum. The operation of artificial water-floods and the control of natural ones immediately raise questions concerning the fundamental nature of such processes. Moreover, it is now recognized that often water occurs dispersed throughout the rock from which the oil issues into the well,' and thus tends to move toward the well simultaneously with the oil. The work reported here is a laboratory investigation of the simultaneous, steady-state flow of oil and water through the same column of uncon-solidated sand. It is thus directly related to the situation in which water occurs in oil-producing sands; it may have less direct implications for the displacement of oil from sands by water. However, it is to be clearly understood that the experiments to be described were performed primarily to obtain information of a more or less fundamental nature, and are not an attempt to reproduce, on laboratory scale, any part of an oil field. The dynamic behavior of a system in which oil and water are flowing simultaneously through sand is best described in terms of its "effective permeability" to either phase. For incompressible fluids flowing through a system of uniform cross section, the effective permeabilities to the two phases, in darcys, may be defined by the equations: Ko = PA6A [la] and Ku = Q [lb] In order to put the results obtained on a comparable basis for different sands, the effective permeabilities will be stated as fractions of the normal permeability of the sand; i.e., fractions of its permeability to a homogeneous fluid. Algebraically, these fractions are: KO' = Ko/K, and KWr = K,/X [2a] and [Zb]

Magnesium, in its combined forms, is the sixth most abundant element and the third most abundant metal in the earth's crust, but it is so reactive that it is never found in nature in the elemental state. As part of the rock-forming minerals like magnesite, dolomite, olivine, and serpentine, it is combined in virtually insoluble forms. As part of soluble minerals like kainite (KC1 MgS04 - 3H20), leonite (K2S0, MgSO, 4H20), langbeinite (K,SO, 2MgS04), and carnallite (KC1 . MgCl? 6H20), it is found in evaporite deposits, generally of marine origin, deep within the earth's crust. Since these minerals are soluble, they are found only in deposits protected from the percolation and leaching action of ground waters by an insoluble and impermeable mantle. Usually this mantle is from several hundred to many thousands of feet thick. Finally, as a solute in marine-like brines, magnesium is common in surface and subterranean waters throughout the world. The oceans, which contain 0.13% Mg, illustrate the inexhaustible nature of the reserve. The recovery of magnesium from the rock-forming minerals, usually by thermal decomposition, and from dilute brines such as sea water by precipitation with lime, are frequent industrial practices. But the recovery of magnesium as magnesium chloride from evaporites or natural brines of concentration greater than sea water has been of little industrial significance for economic and technological reasons. The present US capacity is preponderantly based on the sea-water magnesia process with thermal reduction capacity in second place. No present magnesium capacity is dependent on recovery from the stronger natural brines. But projected capacity, although still weighted in favor of the sea-water magnesia process, is partly based on the recovery of magnesium chloride as a byproduct of potash operations.

K. Baumgarten has returned from active service in France. He reports that he saw C. W. Campbell, formerly with the 2d Engineers on the Chateau Thierry front, and believes that the latter returned to the United States on August 1. He also saw J. J. Croston; G. J. Sielaff, recently transferred to the Gas Service; Thomas M. Smither, survivor of the Tuscania after a 10-mile swim to Ireland. While in Paris he en-deavored to see Prof. Sauveur, but was unsuccessful. F. K. Borrow was given a commission as Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1914, but had to relinquish it, on account of ill health, in August, 1915. His health has much improved and he hopes to resume active work toward the end of this year. Davis, A. W:, see British Columbia Engineers, below. Alfred Fox, Jr., enlisted in the Public Schools Brigade, Royal Fusiliers, in September, 1914; was gazetted Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery in December, 1914, promoted to Captain in November, 1915, and Adjutant to 78th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, in January, 1916. He was appointed Staff Captain of the 12th Divisional Artillery in November, 1917. He has served continuously in France since July 1, 1915. He was awarded the Military Cross in January, 1917, and four times mentioned in despatches. E. Fraser-Campbell writes that he joined the London University 0. T. C. in January, 1918, for five weeks; enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in February, 1918, and attended a training course for officer cadets at Chatham for six weeks. He was commissioned 2d Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, in April, 1918. After two months on home training at Chatham, he landed in France on June 23, 1918, posted to 180th Tunnelling Co., R. E., and is now with his unit up on the line.

Introduction Great Salt Lake Minerals & Chemicals Corp. (GSL), a subsidiary of Gulf Resources & Chemical Corp., is located on the east side of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 20 miles from Ogden, UT. GSL processes brine from the north arm of the lake to produce potash, salt cake, salt, and magnesium chloride brine. Potash fertilizer, in the form of K2SO4 is GSL's primary product. The CSL Sulfate of Potash Complex: The GSL potash complex (depicted in [Fig. 1]) is divided into a solar evaporation pond system and the process plants. The solar evaporation system consists of a 17,000-acre (68.8 km2) ponding operation where the various salts deposit during the summer evaporation season and a harvesting operation which recovers the deposits during the remainder of the year. The harvest is either preconcentrated in the flotation plant or processed directly in the chemical plant where sulfate of potash (SOP) is produced. The chemistry of the lake brine results in a solar deposit containing primarily kainite (KC1 . MgSO4 . 3H20), schoenite (K2SO4 . MgS04 . 6H20), and halite (NaCI), with some carnallite (KC1 . MgC12 . 6H20) and epsomite (MgSOq . 7H20). Other minerals may be deposited, depending upon the weather during the evaporation season. Each year, the solar deposit in the evaporation ponds will greatly depend upon the summer weather conditions, which have in the past proven to be quite unpredictable. Weather may alter both the quantity of the solar deposit and the composition of this deposit. During a "short" evaporation season, the tonnage deposited decreases, but depending upon the short-term weather, the potash mineral content can vary greatly. The Committee on Technical Nomenclature, of which John T. Faig, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, is Chairman, appointed by the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, has recently issued a report advocating uniformity in the use of symbols to designate engineering and mathematical terms: The selection of the symbols was based upon a canvas of a considerable number of engineers, editors of engineering papers, and professors of engineering throughout the United States. T. Rosenqvist—The most interesting point in this paper is the observed transfer of iron into the slag in the initial stage of the desulphurization process, after which the iron again is reduced to the metallic state. The authors interpret this observation as showing that the sulphur enters the slag as an iron-sulphur compound which subsequently is decomposed by the slag. The present writer has previously suggested the following equation for the desulphurization process: S + O2- ? S2- + O For equilibrium in the blast furnace the oxygen potential is defined by equilibrium with graphite and CO of 1 atm pressure: C + O ? CO [2] During the desulphurization process the reactions proceed in the direction of the arrows. If one assumes eq 2 to be significantly slower than eq 1, the transfer of sulphur into the slag, in accordance with eq 1, will build up a local oxygen potential at the metal-slag interface very much higher than that corresponding to the value defined by eq 2. This is possible because the equilibrium oxygen potential in eq 1 is high as long as the sulphur content in the slag is low. This oxygen potential will again be able to oxidize some iron: Fe + O ? Fe2+ + O2- and an increase in the iron content of the slag will be observed. Adding up eqs 1 and 3 one obtains: S + Fe ? S2- + Fe2+ The net effect is thus in harmony with the experimental observation but is obtained without assuming any close ties between the sulphur and iron atoms during the process. Furthermore, it follows from eqs 1 and 2 that when the sulphur content in the slag increases, and equilibrium with C and CO is finally approached, the local oxygen potential at the metal-slag interface will decrease, and the iron in the slag will be reduced back into its metallic state. C. E. Sims-—The data and conclusions presented in this paper are thoroughly convincing in establishing the mechanism of sulphur transfer from iron to slag as in a blast furnace. The evolution of gaseous CO in step 3 of the reactions given on p. 1112 makes the process virtually irreversible. Assuming that the process is similar in slag-metal systems other than in the blast furnace, it is readily seen why free CaO and re-ducing conditions so greatly favor desulphurization. On the other hand, the very effective desulphurization obtained in oxidizing slags when strongly basic, must be attributed to the relatively high stability of CaS as compared to FeS. The ease and simplicity with which the reactions of classic chemistry agree with the experimental data and explain the mechanism is noteworthy. The concept of molecules of FeS, soluble in both phases (metallic iron is not soluble in the slag), migrating from the iron to the slag and there reacting with CaO, which is soluble only in the slag phase, is clear and uncomplicated. This is likewise true for step 3. Those who would deny the existence of molecules or molecular-type combinations in liquid iron, must strain to provide a mechanism so lucid. In the absence of molecules, the Fe and S exhibit a remarkable collusion. L. S. Darken—The investigation and interpretation of rate phenomena in the range of steelmaking temperatures is a difficult task. Most of the laboratory investigations of steelmaking reactions have been concerned with equilibrium. Having determined the equilibrium, our attention naturally focuses next on the mechanism and rate of approach to equilibrium. The authors seem to have contributed substantially to our understanding of these factors for the case of sulphur transfer. I should like to ask the authors whether they consider that the sulphur transfer reaction is diffusion controlled as many high-temperature reactions seem to be. If so, it would seem reasonable to suppose that the slow diffusion step of the process is the transfer across a pseudo-static layer or film similar to that considered in heat flow problems. As the diffusivity and fluidity are smaller for the slag than for the metal, it may tentatively be assumed that the sulphur gradient exists in a thin layer in the slag adjacent to the slag-metal interface and that the metal and the main mass of slag are each maintained uniform by convection. On this basis the amount of sulphur transferred across unit area per unit time is D p (?S%)/100 ?1, where D is the diffusivity, p the density, (?S%) the difference in percent sulphur on the two sides of the layer, and ?l is the layer thickness. At the beginning of the experiment the main body of the slag and hence one side of the layer contains no sulphur; therefore (?S%) may be replaced by (S%), the sulphur content of the slag at the slag-metal interface, which in turn is equal to L[S%] where [S%] is the sulphur content of the metal and L is the distribution coefficient. The rate of transfer thus becomes DpL[S%]/100 ?l, which the authors designate K[S%]. Equating these two quantities and setting D = 10-6 cm2 per sec, p = 3 g per cm3, L = 40, and K = lo-+ g cm-2 sec-1, it is found that ?l, the film thickness, is about 0.01 cm—a value of the order of magnitude of that found in heat transfer problems in liquids. The uncertainty of the numerical values used leaves much to be desired, but at least it can be said that this calculation tends to support the proposed model involving diffusion through a film. Although this does not seem to affect the general argument, I should like to call attention to the fact that the diffusivity3 of sulphur in hot metal is found (on conversion of units) to be about 10-4 cm2 per sec rather than 104 cm2 per sec as stated by the authors. The three equations written by the authors to express the steps in the overall process of sulphur transfer may alternatively be written ionically as only two Fe + S = Fe++ + S-- Fe++ + O-- + C (graphite or metal) = CO (gas) + Fe where the underscore is used to designate the metallic phase; ionic species are slag constituents. After the authors have so neatly demonstrated that iron and sulphur transfer together (at least initially), this fact seems almost self evident; from eq 4 it is seen that if sulphur acquires a negative charge during transfer

Mechanical science is severely tested by the demands of the iron manufacture for the varied apparatus needed to transport and to treat raw materials and products. Water has long been a favorite means of transmitting pressure for such purposes, because of its own incompressibility. Further advances in its use are the more to be expected, since mechanical improvements have steadily tended to overcome the difficulties formerly encountered in the employment of great hydraulic pressures. So long as the pressure is not higher than that which requires for plungers, etc., only ordinary stuffing-boxes, with hemp or other similar packing, the necessary arrangements for the production and transmission of the water-pressure without leakage are very simple. But when this limit (which is, for most purposes, 50 kilos to the square centimeter) is exceeded, new conditions of construction arise, which are met in various ways, and which justify a primary division of hydraulic presses into low-pressure and high-pressure respectively. The former are used in lifting and moving weights, and employ pressures as high (in extreme cases) as 100 kilos per square centimeter; but at this point the friction between piston and hemp-packing is so great that the use of cup-leathers is already preferable. Beyond 100 kilos it becomes a necessity. The range of practicable tight packing which follows is considerable, extending to about 1000 kilos; but "high pressure" in practice is from 100 to 600 kilos, and it is to this that the present paper applies. General Classes and Types. Hydraulic transmission at high pressure usually claims consideration in case the solid mechanism, such as levers, cams, screws, and gear-wheels, would have to be too large, would involve too much friction, or could not be suitably adapted to the speed-requirements of the working-tools. In order to determine copper resource data and production costs for major market economy mines and deposits, the Bureau of Mines has performed detailed engineering and economic analyses on 271 of the world's most significant copper deposits. At the demonstrated resource level, copper potentially recoverable from these deposits is estimated to be 325 million metric tons, 180 million tons of which would be from Pacific Rim countries. Chile has the largest known copper resources of any country and accounts for nearly 45 percent of the copper avail- able from Pacific Rim countries. At $1.00 per pound, in January 1981 dollars, an estimated 80 million metric tons of copper are potentially economically recoverable from Pacific Rim deposits. At this same price, analyses indicate that these deposits could economically produce about 2 million metric tons of copper per year. Sensitivity analyses reveal that if operating costs were to decrease 25 percent, with copper at a price of $1.00 per pound, total copper economically recoverable from Pacific Rim countries could increase by about 10 percent; a 25 percent increase in operating costs could lower economically recoverable copper by 50 percent. Analyses also indicate that byproduct prices are important. If byproduct revenues increased 25 percent, at a copper price of $1.00 per pound, an additional 2 million metric tons of copper could be recovered; if byproduct revenues decrease 25 percent, about 5 million metric tons less of copper metal would be available. Since the January 1981 date of this study, inflation and decreases in copper and byproduct prices have greatly affected the profitability of the world copper industry. Many producing mines have curtailed or suspended production, and development of many non- producing deposits has been postponed.

Preliminary investigations were undertaken with a Megger Ground Tester in 1931 by Hubbert to determine whether the faults in Hardin County, Illinois, could be located by earth-resistivity surveys. The results of these investigations, which were in part presented before this Institute in 1932,1 were sufficiently promising to warrant a more extensive field program in the same general area the following summer. During the second season an apparatus of the Gish-Rooney type was employed because of its greater sensitivity and to avoid the troublesome correction for resistance of potential electrodes necessitated by the use of a Megger instrument. The discussion of earth-resistivity traverses which constitute the main part of this paper is based entirely upon the results of the second season's work. All of the traverses were made with a constant electrode spacing of a equal to 100 ft., and the four-electrode technique was employed. Successive stations in these traverses were spaced at intervals of 100 ft. and the line of electrodes was carried parallel to the line of traverse. The graphs of resistivity profiles presented here (Figs. 1 to 3) are plotted with resistivities in ohm-centimeters as ordinates and with distance divided into stations at 100-ft. intervals as abscissas. After the traverses were run by Hubbert the results were computed, the profiles plotted, and tentative interpretations were made by him. These curves and interpretations were then taken into the field by Wellcr, who made a careful geological examination along the lines of traverse for the purpose of checking and supplementing Hubbert's interpretations. Weller then constructed a geologic cross-section extending along the line of each traverse. The accompanying diagrams graphically illustrate the correlation that can be made between earth resistivity and geology in this area.

I. The Property. The Homestake Mining Co. has acquired through consolida tion the ground and equipment of the Father De Smet Con solidated Gold-Mining Co., the Deadwood-Terra Mining Go., the Caledonia Gold-Mining Co. and the Highland Mining Co., at and near Lead, Lawrence county, South Dakota, in the northern portion of the Black Hills. The company owns or controls 250 claims, comprising 2,616 acres and covering about 8,000 ft. along the strike of the lode. At the surface there are several veins, of which three have united in depth, where the main vein ranges from 300 to 500 ft. in width. The 1,100-ft. level is the lowest at present. The rock of both walls is, so far as known at present, carboniferous alate, and the country is penetrated by a system of porphyry dikes, and in some places capped with porphyry. The output of the company up to January, 1903, has been, approximately, $70,000,000. II. The Ore. The oxidized, open-cut ore is nearly all treated in the three mills on the northern part of the property, which are as follows : The Mineral Point (formerly the De Smet), of 100 stamps, the Monroe (formerly Caledonia), of 100 stamps, and the Pocahon tas (formerly the Deadwood-Terra), of 160 stamps. A cyanide plant, to treat the leachable portion of the tailings from these North End mills, has recently been installed and put into oper ation at Gayville, or Blacktail as it is now known. The Homestake lower-level ore, which comprises the greater part of that being milled at Lead, may be described as a horn blende, garnetiferous schist or slate, which has been crushed and infiltrated with free silica and pyrites, the latter being

I carat = 4 carat-grains] The assayer's weights were miniature copies of the legal weights of his locality, intended, like the modern assay ton, to eliminate calculation. Each assayer made his own, not usually bothering about a given proportion between the true weights and the assay set, but maintaining the correct ratio between all the weights in any one set. The weights were quite small, to permit the use of less sample, but the exact size is nowhere stated in the Probierbüchlein. Even the legal pound varied considerably from place to place, depending on locality, and assayers would use different factors depending on the sensitivity of their balances, among other things. Agricola makes the assay centner equal to one actual drachma, by which term he means the German quintlein, or 1/12,800 of the full weight of the 100-pound centner. Schreittmann says that the 100-pound centner on the assay scale should be less than half a quintlein, i.e., the factor should be at least 25,600. Biringuccio says the assay centner might

Rate expressions for the formation of two-and three-dimensional nuclei on foreign substrates are developed, taking into account previously neglected contributions to the standard Gibbs free energy of formation of critical nuclei. The temperature dependence of critical super saturation data predicted using these expressions is in accord with data for cadmium on copper and sodium on CsCl. EXPERIMENTAL data on the heterogeneous nuclea-tion of metal crystals from the vapor phase1&apos;2 exhibit the temperature dependence predicted by a nucleation rate equation derived by Pound et al.3 In their treatment, the critical nuclei are visualized according to the Volmer4 model as cap-shaped (three-dimensional). Accordingly, it seems desirable to compare these data with a nucleation rate equation which is derived on the assumption of disk-shaped (two dimensional) nuclei. Further, Lothe and Pound5 have recently shown that the standard Gibbs free energy of formation of these critical nuclei contains a contribution which has heretofore been neglected. Thus it is necessary to re-examine these nucleation data using a rate equation which contains this contribution. The van&apos;t Hoff isotherm relates n(i), the concentration of nuclei of critical size i (i = number of atoms), to nil), the concentration of adsorbed single atoms: where standard Gibbs free energy of formation of critical nuclei given by is temperature insensitive and is the bulk free energy change/volume of transformed material], T = substrate temperature and k = Boltzmann&apos;s constant. Previously,3 was determined by considering only the contributions of bulk and surface free energies in transforming i atoms from the population nil) to a cluster of i atoms. It has been shown5 that this procedure does not take into account the free energy contribution arising from the multiplicity of sites, q, where the clusters can be situated. If this contribution, -kT In q/n(l),is added to iG3 [Note that this increases n(i) by a factor q/n(l).] Since the above does not affect the remaining terms in the rate expression of Pound et al., the details are referred to their paper. The corresponding plots for / = 1 nucleus per sq cm sec and C3 = 1018 are shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for cadmium on copper1 and sodium on CsCl2 and the values of obtained therefrom are entered in Table I. It is apparent that the data yield reasonable straight lines with about the same scatter as found using the equation of Pound et al.
