The only slip system observed in zirconium crystals deformed at 77", 575", and 1075OK was (1010) [1210] with a critical resolved shear stress in tension of 1.0 kg per sq mm at 77°K; 0.2 kg per sq mm at 575 °K; and 0.02 kg per sq mm at 1075 OK. The active twin planes were {1012}, (1121}, (11221, and (11233) with varying temperature dependence. A detailed analysis for the slip direction using Laue spot asterism is appended. NeARLY all metals of the hexagonal close-packed structure exhibit basal slip, i. e.,(0002)<1120>- type slip. This is true of magnesium,&apos; zinc,&apos; cadmium,3 beryllium,4 titanium,= yttrium,6 and rhenium.Many of these such as titanium 5&apos;8-&apos;0beryllium,4&apos;" magnesium, and zinc13&apos;14 display other slip modes even at room temperature, and nearly all have been reported to slip on other systems under particular loading or temperature conditions of testing. As is shown in this paper, basal slip was not found at any of four test temperatures from 77" to 1075°K in hexagonal close-packed zirconium under the simple loading conditions of tension and compression, even though in one case the resolved shear stress on the inactive (0002) <llgO> system was twenty-five times higher than the critical resolved shear stress on the active (1010) [1210] system. This result is consistent with prior studies on the active deformation processes in zirconium deformed at room temperature. &apos;&apos;-I7 SPECIMEN PREPARATION A) Material—The zirconium used in this work was of two types: 1) as-deposited reactor grade crystal-bar, and 2) arc-melted and forged reactor grade crystal-bar. Typical chemical and spectrographic analyses of these materials as received, and after hydrogen removal and crystal growth are given in Ref. 17. Crystals of type 1) above have the letter prefix (A) and those of type 2) have the prefix (B) throughout this paper. B) Crystal Growth— he zirconium was machined into rectangular parallelepipeds about 0.2-in. scl in cross section and 2 in. iong. These were hand polished through 4/0 abrasive paper, electropolished, given a hydrogen removal anneal, and subjected to long-time anneals at 840 °C in vacuo to produce usable crystals.&apos;7 A second technique used to obtain large crystals was to cycle the samples two or three times between 1200" and 840°C, allowing them to remain at the higher temperature for about 4 hr and at the lower temperature for 5 days.17 These techniques yielded some grains which occupied the entire cross section of the bar and were as long as 3/4 in. C) Orientation Determination—After the growth of large crystals by thermal cycling, the samples were repolished with extreme care through 4/0 abrasive paper and electropolished. Metallographic examination after polishing showed the surfaces to be free of visible deformation traces. Standard Laue back-reflection X-ray techniques were used to find the crystallographic orientations of selected large grains with respect to a specimen face and edge. Fig. 1 shows the stereographic projections of the stress axes for the crystals used. The sharpness of the spots on the Laue photographs indicated that the crystals were of good quality. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Nine crystals were deformed in tension at 77"K, nine in tension and five in compression at 300°K in previous tests,17 fifteen in tension at 575"K, and eleven in tension at 1075°K. All specimens were stressed by load increments. After a predetermined load was applied, the specimen was removed from the loading appratus and metallographically examined for deformation traces. An attempt was made to initially stress each bar so that some crystals slipped a small amount and others not at all. This was done to bracket the critical resolved shear stress. One bar of special orientation (B-11) was repolished and annealed at 1075°K for 1 hr after lower temperature deformation, before final deformation at 1075°K. In the other bars the loading by increments, followed by metallographic examination, was continued until the surface distortion would interfere with analysis, or until fracture. One example of a crystal pulled to fracture is shown in Fig. 2. This photograph shows a crystal (B-14C) which was pulled at 1075°K and failed by slip on two (10i0) planes. The approximate orientation of this crystal is illustrated in the figure. Specimens were deformed at 77°K in liquid nitrogen on a tensile machine using an insulated bucket with an internal hook to accept a clamped specimen.

The heat capacity of CaMg2 was measured over the temperature interval, 4.8° to 287°K, by the technique of low-temperature adiabatic calorimetry. Heat content measurements were performed with a drop calorimeter over the temperature interval, 273" to 673°K. From these data the thermodynamic functions, (FT - H0)/T, ST - So, and & - Ho, were evaluated. A third-Law calculation of the standard entropy of formation of CaMg2 yields a value of -0.25 * 0.06 cal per (°K g-atom) , and the free-energy function derived from this study when combined with existing equilibria data yields a value for the standard enthalpy of formation which is in agreement with direct calorimetric enthalpy measurements. The accompanying paper&apos; shows that the enthalpy of formation of CaMg2 has been determined with good precision by three different calorimetric techniques.&apos;-= TWO independent determinations of the Gibbs free energy of formation of CaMg2 have also been made; both determinations were based on vapor pressure measurements, being in one case hydrogen vapor pressures over ternary Ca-Mg-H alloys4 and in the other case magnesium vapor pressures over binary Ca-Mg alloys.5 The present determination of heat capacity of CaMg2 below room temperature and of the heat content of CaMg2 above room temperature was undertaken to provide supplementary data. These data are useful in their own right but can in addition be used to evaluate an entropy of formation for CaMg2 which, because of the interrelation of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy, can be used as a check of the self-consistency of the composite of the presently available information. LOW-TEMPERATURE HEAT CAPACITY The heat capacity of CaMg2 was measured over the temperature interval 4.87° to 286.64°K in an adiabatic calorimeter. The physical details of the calorimeter and the experimental procedure for measuring the heat capacity of a specimen have been adequately described by Gerstein et a1.6 The source and purity of the calcium and magnesium are described together with the methods of sample preparation and chemical analyses in the accompanying paper.&apos; Results of chemical analyses of the material which was used in the present investigation are shown in Table I. These analyses show that, on the basis of the published phase diagram,7 the heat capacity sample contained a slight excess of a calcium while the heat content sample contained a slight excess of magnesium. However, in both cases the excess was small, and X-ray diffraction patterns showed reflections which were without exception attributable to CaMg2. The sample which was used for heat capacity measurements weighed 69 g while the sample container and addenda weighed 132 g. The sample was in the form of annealed powder, 50 to 60 mesh, and was sealed into the sample container under 0.1 atm of helium. Copper fins inside the sample container facilitated thermal equilibrium of the powdered Sample. Time intervals of the order of 10 min were required for thermal equilibration, and such times are normal for this calorimeter regardless of the form of the sample. The observed heat capacities were corrected for the small excess of a calcium through use of the heat capacity values tabulated by Hultgren et a1.8 The corrected heat capacities are tabulated as a function of temperature in Table II. The free-energy function and the absolute entropy of CaMg2, which were calculated from the experimental heat capacity data, are listed in Table 111. A smooth curve was fitted to a plot of the experimental values of the heat capacity and in only two instances above 30°K did the plotted points deviate from the curve by more than 0.2 pct. Below 10°K the deviation of several of the points was as much as 50 pct. These large percentage deviations were attributed to the small value of the heat capacity and to the low sensitivity of the platinum resistance thermometer in this temperature range. The deviations in the region of 10°to 30°K were less than 5 pct. Although the percentage deviations of some of the low-temperature measurements are large, the actual value of these deviations is small since the magnitude of the heat capacity in that temperature range is small. The error in the value of the third-law entropy at 298.15°K was estimated to be less than 0.01 cal per (°K g-atom). A value of -0.25 ±0.06 cal per (°K g-atom) was obtained for the standard entropy of formation at 298.15°K from the relation:

If recent trends in the rotary drill market are indicative of future surface mining operating practice, then the move to scaled-up mining equipment by manufacturers may soon be over. Of the 48 different rotary drills currently produced by 12 manufacturers, over 60% were introduced within the past five years. By far, the new drills have been in the "small" class, capable of producing up to a 229-mm-diam (9-in.) blasthole with 222 kN (50,000 lb) or less of down pressure. New rotary drills in the "large" class, capable of producing a 311-mm-diam (12 1/4-in.) blasthole with up to 423 kN (95,000 lb) down pressure, have also been prominent. In the super-size category, new drills producing blasthole sizes to 444-mm-diam (17 1/2-in.) with up to 578 kN (130,000 lb) have been minimal.

The effect of carbon in solid solution on the plastic behavior of thorium was studied by measuring the flow stress of Th-C alloys from 4.2" to 573°K and at several strain rates. Carbon was found to strengthen thorium primarily by increasing the thermally activated component of the flow stress. The strengthening due to carbon was directly proportional to the carbon content and decreased rapidly with increasing temperature up to 423" K. The flow stress also increased with increasing strain rate. The strengthening appears to be due to a strong short-range interaction between carbon atoms and dislocations. A yield point was observed in the Th-C alloys which increased with increasing carbon content. JTREVIOUS study of the mechanical properties of thorium has been confined largely to the measurement of the engineering properties. Work prior to 1956 has been summarized by Milko et al.1 who reported that additions of carbon to thorium sharply increased the room-temperature strength. In addition, the yield strength was observed to decrease rapidly over the temperature range from 25" to 500°C. In 1960, Klieven-eit2 measured the flow stress of thorium containing 400 ppm C. He found that over the temperature range from 78" to 470°K the flow stress was strongly dependent on temperature and rate of deformation. A drop in the load-elongation curve, or a yield point, was observed over most of the above temperature range. Above 470°K, the flow stress was nearly independent of temperature and strain rate. This strong temperature and strain rate dependence of flow stress is not generally observed in fcc metals. It is, in fact, more typical of the behavior reported for bcc metals. Bechtold,3 Wessel,4 and conrad5 have pointed out the striking difference between the commonly studied bcc metals and fcc metals in regard to the effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress. Zerwekh and scott6 studied the plastic deformation of thorium reported to contain 12 ppm C. They found that this material did not obey the Cottrell-Stokes law as expected for fcc metals. In addition, they found values of the activation volume smaller by an order of magnitude than expected for an fcc metal. They concluded that thorium was strengthened by a randomly dispersed solute. Thorium differs from many other fcc metals that have been studied extensively in that it shows a relatively high carbon solubility at room temperature. Mickleson and peterson7 report the solubility limit at room temperature to be 3500 ppm C. The lowest value reported is that of Smith and Honeycombe8 who report the limit to be 2000 ppm C at 350°C. The pres- ent investigation was a systematic study of the flow stress and yield point phenomenon of thorium over a broad range of carbon content, temperature, and strain rate. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thorium used in this investigation was produced by the reduction of thorium tetrachloride with magnesium as described by Peterson et a1.&apos; Chemical analysis of the original ingot after arc melting and electron beam melting is shown in Table I. Alloys were prepared by arc melting this thorium with high-purity spectrographic graphite. Threaded specimens with a gage length 0.252 in. diam by 1.6 in. long were used for the constant stress or creep measurements. These specimens were machined from rod which had been cold-rolled and swaged to % in. diam. Tensile specimens were prepared by swaging annealed 3/8 -in.-diam rod to 0.102 *0.001 in. The as-swaged wire was cut to lengths of 2 in., annealed, and the center 1-in. gage length elec-tropolished to 0.100 ±0.001 in. The specimens were gripped for a length of 3 in. at each end by a serrated four-jaw collet which was tightened by a tapered compression nut. No slipping occurred in the grips and negligible deformation was observed outside the 1-in. gage length. Both the creep and tensile specimens were annealed at 730°C under a vacuum of 1 x X Torr. The resulting structures consisted of equiaxed recrystallized grains with a grain size of 3200 grains per sq mm for the tensile specimens and 2200 grains per sq mm for the creep specimens. After the specimens were prepared, samples were analyzed for nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. The results of these analyses are given in Table 11.

This paper describes a method for obtaining compositions of gas and oil phases in equilibrium with each other at a given reservoir temperature and pressure as lean or enriched gas is injected into a reservoir oil not in equilibrium with the gas. The method is based on calculation of equilibrium constants, K, from the equation log Kp = A + B F, where p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. The paper explains how A and B could be determined with a minimum amount of data. The method consists of calculating equilibrium constants as a function of liquid composition and using the K&apos;s to calculate changes in compositiort of injection gas as it successively contacts original resetvoir oil at the gas-oil front and the change in composition of reservoir oil as it is successively contacted by the injection gas in the vicinity of an injection well. An iterative process is required. Two examples of the method are given which show how oil and gas compositions and properties are calculated with the aid of a computer. INTRODUCTION The calculation of recovery from lean-gas or enriched-gas injection into a saturated or under-saturated reservoir oil requires a knowledge of how phase properties change in a reservoir between injection well and producing well. To determine the phase compositions or properties experimentally would be difficult and time consuming, especially if one wanted to look at the effect of various injection gas compositions. For some fields an engineer would want to make preliminary calculations on the economics of gas injection before he makes the decision to spend a corrsiderable sum of money for laboratory work to obtain the necessary fluid properties. A method for calculatine compositions and properties based on a minimum of laboratory data is described. The minimum amount of data required is injection gas and reservoir oil composition and injection gas solubility as a function of pressure for an undersaturated oil, or the compositions of mixtures of reservoir fluid with two or more enriched gases, which mixtures have a bubble-point pressure that is the same as the expected average displacement pressure. On the other hand, if the economics appear to be attractive, more laboratory data can be obtained in the form of equilibrium constants for three or more mixtures of the reservoir fluid and injection gases. The method is based on the calculation of K&apos;s from the equation, log Kp = A + B F, where K is equilibrium constant, p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. This method of plotting K data by means of the above equation is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.1 A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. It is shown how experimental data are used to determine how A and B vary with composition. BASIS OF METHOD EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANTS Equilibrium constant (K) data are required for this method. The K of each component is obtained from an equation that gives the product of K and pressure as a function of component characterization factor. The characterization factor F = b(l/Tb — l/T), where b is a constant characteristic of a given component, Tb is the boiling point in OR at atmospheric pressure of the given component, and T is the temperature of the system in OR. This method of plotting K data is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.l The straight-line equation of the log Kp - F plot is log hp = log Kop +BFi, where Kop is at F =0, i designates the component, and B is the slope of the line. AS is well-known, the length per unit volume, Lv, of any lineal feature (such as grain edges in a polycrys-talline specimen) can be estimated from a count of the number of point intersections with a random plane of polish. Specifically:&apos; Lv = 2NA in which NA is the expected number of intersections per unit area of the plane. As with all other measurements in quantitative metallography, the estimation of Lv is subject to a sampling error, the magnitude of which will depend on the number of observations. The analysis is usually performed by counting the number of intersections falling within a closed test figure of known area applied to a succession of different areas on the plane of polish. The test figure can be drawn directly on the screen of a projection microscope or else superimposed on the image of the structure by means of a reticule in a focusing eyepiece of an ordinary microscope. The use of micrographs is very inefficient unless, as in the present study, these are also needed for some other purpose. Consider an analysis in which n applications are made of a test figure within which the expected number of intersections is N. The expected total number of intersections counted is then given by NT = nN If (N) is the standard deviation in N for one application of the figure and if the latter is applied to non-overlapping regions so that the N&apos;s are independent in the statistical sense, then the standard deviation in Nt is given by: a(NT) = a(N)vn Eliminating n from Eqs. [2] and [3] we obtain: Thus, k will be a constant for a given specimen and test figure. From Eqs. [ I] and [4] we find As is to be expected, therefore, the fractional error in the estimation of Lv is inversely proportional to the square root of the total number of intersections counted. It is very desirable to have at least a rough estimate of k before starting an analysis, since it will then be possible to decide in advance by use of Eq. [5J how many counts should be made in order to achieve the desired accuracy in Lv. Without such information the investigator, unless lucky, will either do needless (and tedious) work or else obtain a result with too large an error. It is very easy to calculate k for the limiting case of N — 0, i.e., when the test figure is vanishingly small. In this case there is a negligible probability of two or more intersections falling within the figure. There are therefore only two possible outcomes: a count of one with a probability of, say, p and a zero count with a probability of (I-p). Thus and Therefore: We might expect k to depend on N and therefore on the size of the test figure. Such a dependence was observed2 in the analogous case involving the estimation of grain-boundary area per unit volume by a count of the number of intersections of a test circle with traces of the boundaries on the plane of polish. In this case the theoretical value of k at the limit N — 0 was 1.41. It was also predicted that k would display an initial sharp decrease with increasing N. Experimentally, k was observed to decrease to a value of 0.62 at N - 6 and thereafter remain approximately constant. Furthermore, the value of k for N > 6 was found to be insensitive to the form of the structure provided no pronounced anisotropy or grain-size variation was present. Yield point measurements were made on polycrys-talline specimens of a iron deformed various amounts at 770, 1950, or 273°K, aged, and redeformed at 77: 195°, or 273°K. When the prestrain temperature is lower than that subsequent to aging, the yield point return is suppressed relative to specimens deformed at the same temperature both before and after aging. The degree of suppression is a function of both the magnitude of prestrain at the lower temperature and the difference between the deformation temperatures before and after aging. It is proposed that the suppression is caused by the formation of dislocation barriers during the initial low-temperature deformation. The aging kinetics of polycrystalline a-iron wires deformed at 77o or 303oK were studied at 44 " and 64 "C using internal friction measurements. No change was noted as a result of the difference in prestrain temperature. IN an earlier investigation1 it was observed that the return of the yield point was suppressed when a poly-crystalline specimen of a iron was plastically deformed at 77oK, aged at room temperature, and subsequently tested at room temperature. In order to investigate this observation, a research program was undertaken to measure the effect of prestrain temperature on the strain aging of a iron.&apos; According to Thomas and Leak,3 return of the yield point and internal friction are similar measures of strain aging since both are dependent on solute atoms leaving the solid solution. The decrease in internal friction as a function of aging time is indicative of the removal of solute atoms from the solution, while the return of the yield point as a function of aging time gives the rate of arrival of solute atoms at the dislocations. According to Cottrell and Bilby,4 the solute atoms create an "atmosphere" which locks the dislocations and causes a return of the yield point upon restraining. In this experiment, both methods of measuring strain aging were employed in order to have two independent measurements of the strain aging phenomenon. In a previous study,5 the strain aging kinetics of a similar lot of a iron were measured for specimens which were prestrained and tested at the same temperature over the range of 77" to 273°K. Although some differences were found in the correlation of the two methods employed for measuring strain aging, the kinetics of strain aging were unaffected by the change of prestrain and test temperature. In another study,6 dislocation line tension and the density of the solute atmosphere were found to contribute to the return of the yield point when ingot iron specimens were prestrained at 303°K and tested at a lower temperature, namely 77°K. This paper is concerned with changes in strain aging kinetics produced by pre-straining at 77" to 303°K and testing at either the prestrain temperature or at higher temperatures up to 273°K. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The polycrystalline a iron specimens used in both the tensile and internal friction tests were 0.033-in. diam ingot iron wires, wet hydrogen treated and re-carburized. The Pachuca - Real del Monte district has produced about 46.6 kt (51,300 ton) Ag from subvolcanic vein deposits. Three types of wall rock alteration are spatially related to the veins: K-feldspar, propylitic, and phyllic. K-feldspar alteration occurs within veins; propylitic alteration occurs in fractured rocks between veins; and phyllic alteration occurs above veins. Hydrogen-reduction data for naturally occurring single crystals and Prepared polycrystals of dense hematite have been presented. Results cover the temperature range 400o to 1000oC, for particles from ten sources, ranging in size from 0.07 to 10 mm and in shape from spheres to cylinders, cubes, and thin slabs. A consistent pattern of behavior has been demonstrated for single crystals and the reduction mechanism shown to be temperature-dependent. Below 579oC reduction is a simple topochemical process but at higher temperatuves it is complex and occurs in two distinct stages. Prepared particles from these laboratories behave in a similar manner to the single crystals. Data from two investigators showing topochernical reduction of Prepared particles above 575°C are inconsistent with that for other dense hematites. It is concluded that topochenzical reaction should not be used as a model for generalized rate expressions for dense hematites. SINCE 1958, McKewan1-6 has brought to prominence a simple concept of dense hematite reduction. This model is that oxygen is lost from a hematite particle undergoing reduction only from an oxide-iron interface that recedes in such a way that the oxide remaining retains the original shape of the particle, i.e., reduction occurs topochemically. An adjunct to this concept is that any intermediate oxides in the transition from hematite to iron only form thin layers so that oxygen cannot be lost from the particle without movement of the oxide-iron interface. Further, the rate of oxygen loss from the particle is said to be proportional to the area of the receding interface so that the iron layer grows linearly with time and the over-all reduction process can be described by the equation where ro and do are the initial particle radius and density, respectively, R is the fraction of the original oxygen lost, i.e., the fractional reduction, at time t, and K is the rate constant. The idea of an underlying simplicity in hematite reduction is attractive because it gives a tractable basis from which general theories of hematite reduction can be developed and it has received wide support,7-14 based mainly on the large amount of data13 that can be fitted to Eq. [I]. However, despite the fact that this equation has been derived for dense materials, the bulk of the data that have been used to test it13 have been for materials of only about 90 pct of theoretical density (5.26 g cm-3) or less, so that its generality for dense hematites has not been demonstrated. In any case, as will be seen, adherence of reduction data to Eq. [1] does not necessarily imply that reaction occurs topochemically. In this work only data for hematites approaching theoretical density are considered and it will be shown that in only one study besides McKewan&apos;s is topochemical behavior observed over the whole range of temperature investigated. For the majority of materials a linear rate of interface advance is observed to complete reduction only when wustite is not a stable intermediate phase in the transition of hematite to iron, i.e., at temperatures below about 575°C. Above this temperature, reduction is an exceedingly complex series of reactions that takes place in two distinct stages and it is only in the first stage that reaction in any way resembles a topochemical process. This means then that, far from representing general behavior as has commonly been supposed, topochemical reaction for dense hematites is only a particular behavior that may be observed under some circumstances. EXPERIMENTAL Hydrogen-reduction data have been collected and cross-checked in these laboratories by three techniques, weight loss, collection of water evolved in the reduction reactions, and direct metallographic examination. Details of these techniques are discussed elsewhere," where it is shown that results obtained by the three methods are in close agreement. The weight-loss method, by which most of the results were obtained, consisted of hanging the sample in a platinum mesh basket from an Ainsworth Model AV-AU-1 vacuum recording balance inside a vertical l 1/4-in.-ID alumina tube furnace. Dry deoxidized hydrogen was flowed downwards through the tube at 2 to 4 liters min-1 (stp). Single crystals from two sources and artificial oxides from three sources have been examined. The single crystals were from hematite deposits at Yampi Sound, Western Australia, and Brazil, the latter being obtained from Gregory, Bottley and Co., London, U.K. The "Yampi Blue" crystals were hand-picked from washed, magnetically concentrated, sized fractions, -200 mesh BSS (mean diameter ca 0.07 mm) and —36 + 44 mesh BSS (mean diameter ca 0.4 mm) while 10-mm cubes were cut from the Brazilian crystals with a diamond saw. The starting materials for the prepared particles were hematites designated, respectively, "Specpure Iron Oxide", Laboratory No. S639 from Johnson Matthey & Co. Ltd., London, U.K., "Calcined Ferric Oxide" from B.D.H. Laboratory Chemicals Division, Poole, U.K., and "Pigment Grade Oxide", EPR-50, from C. K. Williams & Co., Easton, Pa., U.S.A. Approximately spherical particles were prepared from the artificial oxides by rolling the material, moistened if necessary, in a glass jar, and cylindrical compacts approximately 10 mm in diam and of approximately equal height were pressed in a steel die at 200 psi. Like some other Pt-group metals palladium shows a low but considerable solid solubility of oxygen, which was found already from oxidation studies. The oxygen solid solubility of palladium in equilibrium with gaseous oxygen has been investigated at 900 - 1300 °C in oxygen (665 mbar) and air by gassing and analyzing polycrystalline samples. The 0-concentrations range from 40 to 90 ppm and decrease with rising temperature. The isobaric solubility can be represented by the least-squares fit log c0 = 0.5 log p02- 0.32 + 920/T (c0 in wt. ppm, p02 in mbar, T in K). The thermodynamic data of the exothermic solution reaction are calculated to ?H°= -17.6 kJ?mol-1 and ?S° -76.5 J?mol ? K-1. The behaviour of palladium in an oxygen atmosphere is characterized by the simultaneous reactions of the solution of oxygen in the metal and the formation and evaporation of volatile oxides besides the pure metal evaporation.

PfANN1 has shown that when a cylinder of molten binary alloy freezes directionally, the solute distribution can be described analytically by cg=k(l-g)k-1 [1] in which Cg is the solute concentration in the solid at the point where a fraction g of the original liquid has frozen and Co is the initial solute concentration. The term k is the effective distribution coefficient of the solute and is defined as the ratio Cx/CL where Cl is the solute concentration in the main body of the liquid. Both the slope and the intercept at -log (1 - g) = 0 of a logarithmic plot of Eq. [I.] provide a measure of k. Under conditions of freezing where diffusion in the solid is negligible and the solute concentration in the liquid is uniform, the effective distribution coefficient k, derived as above, is equal to the equilibrium distribution coefficient taken from the phase diagram. However, under ordinary freezing conditions, even though solid-state diffusion is negligible, the solute rejected from the freezing solid does not have sufficient time to diffuse uniformly throughout the main body of the liquid. A concentration gradient is formed in a boundary layer in front of the advancing solid-liquid interface as pointed out by Rutter and Chalmers.&apos; Thus, under these conditions, the concentration of the freezing liquid in the boundary layer is higher than that predicted from the equilibrium phase diagram and consequently the effective distribution coefficient k, obtained from directional freezing experiments, is larger than the equilibrium distribution coefficient. The symbol k will designate the effective distribution coefficient in the discussion which follows. In this paper, the determination of the effective distribution coefficient is demonstrated for several dilute binary alloys and a polynary magnesium alloy. The effect of freezing rate on the value of the derived k is presented in detail. An example for the calculation of the solidus in a dilute binary solution using the experimentally determined effective distribution coefficient is given. MATERIALS STUDIED Binary magnesium alloys of copper, nickel, and zinc containing approximately 0.10 wt pct solute and a polynary alloy containing approximately 0.10 wt pct each of several elements were selected for study. The spectrographic analyses of these alloys are given in Table I. The analyses are believed accurate to within +5 pct of the stated value. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Extruded rods of the alloys, 3/8 in. in diam and 11 in. long were used for directional freezing studies. The alloy rods were melted horizontally in a high-purity graphite boat by a Nichrome-wound tube furnace which moved parallel to the length of the rod. The boat was supported inside a Vycor tube suitably connected to provide a protective atmosphere of dry SO2. For an experimental run, the following procedure was used. The alloy rod was cleaned in dilute HNO, and dried. The graphite boat containing the alloy rod was placed within the Vycor tube and the tube connected to the gas train&apos; The &apos;ystem was purged for 20 min with dry argon and then a flow of dried SO, was maintained for the duration of the run. The movable furnace was positioned and either all or a desired portion of the alloy rod was melted. After attainment of steady-state temperature gradients the molten bar was solidified from one end to the other at a controlled rate by pulling the furnace along the length of the bar at the desired speed. At the conclusion of the run, the directionally frozen alloy rod was analyzed spectrographically at 1 1/4-in. intervals.

The use of computing machines to solve physical problems has made it imperative to represent physical data in a form computing machines can use. Although curve-fitting is an old and well-practiced art, there still seems to be some interest in questions regarding what methods can be used and why. Even though there are many good references on this subject, it may be of some value to discuss a particular method which has been found to be useful, and to make available the associated tables for its use in the hope that there can be saved a few of the tedious hours necessary to reduce many of the suggested methods to practice. Although a very brief discussion of the mathematical background of the tables is included immediately below, those interested only in their use can skip directly to the section on Use of the Tables. Direct Fit of a Set of Points A frequently encountered problem is: Given data which can be represented by a smooth curve +(x), to find an easy-to-evaluate function F(x), with only a few coefficients, which is a good approximation of +(x) on the interval 0 5 x 5 x,,. Recently Levine applied the Conrad-Wiedersich17 equation where H is the activation enthalpy, v the activation volume, T* the effective shear flow stress, T the absolute temperature, and ? the strain rate, to an analysis of titanium single-crystal data. The activation energy as a function of testing temperaturs obtained from specimens oriented for single (1010) prismatic slip is shown in Fig. 12. This diagram indicates a different linear dependence of H on T in the temperature interval from 220° to 300°K than from 0° to 220°K. Levine interpreted the break in this curve as indicating a change in the thermally activated mechanism controlling the flow stress. The purpose of this communication is to point out that the data in Fig. 1 is not consistent with the concept of a flow stress controlled by a simple thermally activated mechanism between 220° and 300°K. Measurements have been made of solute segregation during dendrilic growth by using radioactive solute elements and ,measuring the activity of den(12-ites cut from decanted specimens. This has been done for both lead awl tin based binary alloys contaitzing the following solute additions: Ag, T1204, was dependet on ko, the equilibrium distribution coefficient in the following way Fay k &apos;c 0.1, C/C 0.6; for k0 >0.1. 0.6 <c,/c,< I. Qualitative obse?-vations were madc of dendritic segregation, by using autoradiographic techniques, for the Sn + Ag110 and Sn + Tlo4 systems. The observation were found to he in general agreement with the measurements ofCA/Co. Autoradiographic were also obtained of scctiolccl delzr11-iie stalks. These indicated that the stalks had a substructure, dclileated by solute corzetlt?atio?zs nlolg the substructure walls. A new dendrite growth direction <JI2> is reported for tila. SOLUTE segregation in dilute binary alloys has been investigated by Pfann,&apos; Smith, Tiller, and Rut-ter,&apos; and others. They considered the case of a slowly advancing plane solid interface, and derived expressions for the distribution of solute in both solid and liquid during solidification. To determine these expressions, they assumed no diffusion in the solid and either complete mixing in the liquid:&apos; or diffusion controlled solute movements in the liquid without any convective mixing.&apos; The present investigation considers solute segregation during dendritic growth, in which case the solid-liquid interface is not plane, and the growth rates are rapid. Segregation under these growth conditions has not been treated mathematically, because of the relative complexity of the system. It has been suggested by Chalmer, on the basis of preliminary results, that an alternative to the diffusion and heat flow controlled conditions during growth is &apos;diffusionless" dendritic growth in which solid is formed with the same composition as the liquid. He suggests this type of growth may depend upon a solvent-solute relationship that permits some solid solubility without excessive increase in internal energy, as is the case for solutions of tin in lead. On the other hand, Montariol,4 and others, have shown experimentally that some segregation does occur during dendritic growth in metals using etching and radioactive tracer techniques to indicate the concentrations of the solute. The present investigation was undertaken to determine, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the extent of solute segregation associated with dendritic growth in a series of binary alloys, as a function of solute concentration. PROCEDURE The solvent materials used were Vulcan Electrolytic tin (99.997 pct purity) and Tadanac lead (99.998 pct purity). The solute materials were Zn, Sn, and Sb (better than 99.998 pct purity), Ag and Co (99.5 pct purity), and T1 (Fisher "purified" metal sticks). Activation of the solute metals was carried out in the reactor at Chalk River, Canada. Master alloys were prepared by induction heating from the radioactive solute metal and the pure solvent, under argon, in graphite crucibles. Pieces of these alloys were then added to the solvent to give the required solute concentration. Dendrites were grown in essentially the same manner as that described by Weinberg and Chalmer, , in which controlled orientation single crystals were grown dendritically in horizontal graphite boats, and the liquid decanted. The crystals were grown and decanted in an atmosphere of tank argon. Before decanting, a sample of the liquid was drawn up in a glass tube and allowed to solidify rapidly. The orientations of the single crystals were such that <loo> was parallel to the growth direction, and (100) in the horizontal plane for lead, and [1101 and (110) respectively for tin. With these orientations long dendrite stalks formed along the bottom of the boat in the dendrite direction (<100> for lead and [I101 for tin) from which secondary branches grew. Only these secondary branches, which grew freely in the liquid from the dendrite stalk to the liquid surface, were used in the measurements. Accordingly, effects due to substrates and oxides on the surface of the liquid need not be considered.
