The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. This report describes development and demonstration of an upgraded stench fire warning system for underground wines. Current systems, which have been used since before 1920, release an ethyl mercaptan mixture into the mines' compressed and/or ventilation air during emergencies. Miners, when smelling ethyl mercaptan, evacuate the mine according to predetermined plans. These systems, while simple, have problems with safety and reliability. The upgraded system overcomes these problems. The system uses a different stench agent, is less toxic, less nauseating, and less corrosive than ethyl mercaptan. These combined with the feature of thiophane not reacting with iron oxides, makes the upgraded system safer and more reliable. The system also uses a combination of two simple principles: a standpipe with pressure balancing to provide a constant head, and a sized orifice to control the rate of release of the stench agent. This system enables the mine to release the agent for a longer period which provides better coverage and to ensure that miners will not be exposed to potentially toxic concentrations of the stench agent. The system is easy to operate, requiring only the turning of two 1/4-turn ball valves. The upgraded system has been successfully tested during two evacuation drills at an underground uranium mine. Using three injectors (one on the compressed air line and one on each of two intake air shafts), the system exhibited significant improvements in warning times over the mine's existing system. This report provides a detailed description of the system design and its demonstrated performance in two mine demonstrations.

This paper illustrates that, with the application of new processes, smaller steel plants using local raw materials can be economical and advisable. It also introduces the problems connected with the direct reduction processes, which use non-coking coal or gas as reducing agents, and which are employed in connection with conventional reduction to produce excellent results. Electric smelting is also discussed, and some practical examples of operating plants are given.

The inherently explosion-proof mine (EPM) concept is based upon the non-flammability of certain combustible-oxidant-inert gas mixtures, and the effect of partial pressure of gases on physiological reactions. In a properly controlled underground environment, gas explosions are impossible, men can do work, and relatively high concentrations of methane would be permitted. A systems analysis has been performed to examine the physiological, engineering, and economic feasibility of such a concept, and methods and equipment are recommended for maintaining an EPM atmosphere in a bituminous coal mine producing a nominal two million tons of clean coal per year. It is concluded that: engineering feasibility can be demonstrated using subsystems and components that can be designed and built within the present state-of-the-art, that economic feasibility is possible within approximately five years, and that physiological feasibility is sufficiently promising to warrant continued investigation.

The majority of SAG and ball mill design methodologies are applied using a single design value for mill selection, such as the 80th percentile ball mill work index or SMC value. Inherent in the selection of this design value is a desire for the mill to accommodate unfavourable, but not absolute worst case, feed conditions. It has been observed in numerous “post-mortems” of unsuccessful designs and also in many optimisation studies, that the selection of the design value has been poor. Statistical analysis of testwork data sets shows that inherent variability in the data can, by itself, lead to design errors. Metallurgical testing is an attempt to measure the characteristics of millions of tonnes of ore using only a few kilograms of sample. In this paper some realistic but synthetic test work data sets are used to explore old and new methods of defining the design envelope and subsequently selecting a reliable point. The aim of the paper is to provide practitioners with tools that reveal the adequacy (or otherwise) of metallurgical test programs intended to support various levels of project design. It also provide guidance as to how it is possible to statistically justify a comparatively high design point in the absence of adequate test data.CITATION:David, D, 2015. Updraft sintering of lead concentrates was introduced at Port Pirie in 1955 and since that time a considerable amount of investigational work has been carried out in the laboratory and on the plant with the objective of improving both the understanding of the process and its practical application.From this work it is now possible to predict trends in design and operation, which should result in capital savings and increased efficiency of future updraught plants.INTRODUCTIONOver the last 70 years a remarkable advance has been made in the method of preparing lead concentrates for smelting in the Port Pide blast furnaces of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.). Beginning in 1889 with heap roasting, the process progressed to Ropp roasters and Huntington-Heberlein pots in various combinations, then to multiple small Dwight Lloyd (D.L.) downdraught machines. In 1940 two large 10 ft by 50 ft D.L. downdraught machines were installed, and finally in 1955 updraught sintering was ,introduced with the installation of the present 10 ft by 99 ft sinter machine.At the time this last machine was built it was the first unit of its type and thus, of necessity, an experimental machine. During the eight years it has been operating a considerable amount of investigational work on sintering has been carried out both on the plant and in the laboratory.It is now felt that sufficient information is on hand to predict at least tentatively, some of the future developments in lead sintering, whereby both the quality of the sinter and the rate of production may be improved. This will result in a considerable reduction in smelting costs.

Grinding Mill Operation and Maintenance - Central to Asset Management Since 2005, RME has pursued a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm, made possible by RME's latest Mill Relining Systems. At some sites, new liners degrade SAG mill performance. The variables include mill volume loss, rotational speed limitations (ball strike) and liner designs developed for longer and longer life but without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences of whole plant performance. Freshly relined mills can initially deliver as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the liners' wear life. RME's proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and relining speed become key profitability contributors and not simply 'must do' maintenance functions and costs. This paper includes a short history of RME's Mill Relining System development (Appendix A). These are the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The body of this paper outlines RME's vision of a 'liner profile vs. profitability' commercial model, underpinned by the rigour of PAS 55-1:2008 Asset Management Part 1: Specification for the optimised management of physical assets. The technical elements can be developed either intuitively (based on plant experience) or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum technical solution for the maximum commercial outcome. Much of this can be modelled off-line, in the virtual world, before asking senior management to commit to an expensive liner experiment. The potential benefits are compelling.

The introduction of mechanized mining in coal mines, which has speeded loading, has emphasized the importance of efficient underground transportation systems. The purpose of this investigation is to study and analyze various systems now in use, and to derive conclusions therefrom. This report may be helpful to operators who are planning new systems of transportation or who are revising present systems to increase their efficiency. This paper is the first of a series on this subject and describes some systems of transportation utilizing rail haulage. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in preparing this report was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the officials of the companies whose mines were studied. The descriptions of the transportation systems at the mines included herein have been checked for accuracy, and publication of the data has been approved by the executives of the several operating companies.

A series of coal- mine catastrophes in the latter part of the first decade of this century focused public attention on the need for safety in mines and resulted in the establishment of the Federal Bureau of Mines , whose primary function was to promote safety and improve hygienic conditions of workers in the mineral and related industries . These activities are carried out by the Safety Division of the Bureau's Health and Safety Service . In general , the work performed by the Safety Division personnel may be classified as educational and investigative . Instruction is given in accident prevention for mine officials and miners ; first aid to the injured ; the use and care of oxygen breathing apparatus ; and advanced mine rescue and recovery operations . A specialized safety course is offered to the petroleum and gas industries . Division personnel also aids in or directs rescue and recovery work after mine fires and explosions ; assists at first - aid and mine rescue contests ; conducts safety exhibits and demonstrations ; and presents safety talks , often accompanied by sound safety motion pictures or latern slides , before employee and official groups , at meetings of Holmes safety chapters , at mining institutes , and at other safety or technical gatherings . Coal - mine fires and explosions are investigated , as well as quarry or metalmine explosions and fires , miscellaneous accidents , health and safety hazards , and safety conditions at mines and plants ; safety devices are investigated and developed . Field studies cover ventilation , methods of allaying suspended coal - dust particles , prevention of dust accumulations , the proper use of rock dust to prevent or limit explosions , explosives practices , and the care and use of underground equipment . The results of these studies and investigations are widely applied in the various training courses and are prepared as reports and recommendations , which are submitted to interested persons or are combined and distributed to the public as bulletins , technical papers , miners ' circulars , information circulars , and reports of investigations . These studies also afford a basis for the development of new or modification of old Safety Decisions of the Mine Safety Board of the Bureau of Mines . The following pages review the accomplishments of the division as regards safety during 1942,2/ with like information for a series of recent years and summaries to date . A striking feature of the division's work has been the safety education of more than 1-1/2 million persons who have taken first -aid and mine rescue training courses . That these efforts over a period of 3 decades have been successful is revealed by the decline in coal - mine fatality rates and a somewhat smaller decrease in metal - mining and quarrying fatality rates .

The Bureau of Mines has recently completed a comprehensive study of coal strength. More than 4000 individual test results from over 60 seams were extracted from the literature and combined in the most complete data base of the uniaxial compressive strength of coal ever assembled. In addition, more than 100 case studies of in-mine pillar performance were available in the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) data base. Statistical analysis of this wealth of data has yielded valuable results. The data shows clearly that the "size effect" is related to coal structure. The widely-used Gaddy formula, which predicts a significant strength reduction as the specimen size is increased, was found to apply only to "blocky" coals. For friable coals, the size effect was much less pronounced or even non-existent. Case histories of failed pillars are the best available data on in situ coal strength. This study found no correlation between the ARMPS stability factor of failed pillars and coal specimen strength. Pillar design was much more reliable when a uniform coal strength was used in all case histories.

"Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations have evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960s-1970s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980s-1990s. These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of operational excellence.Operational excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining include the following:• Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards.• Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement.There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts.The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to make the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process.This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement."

It is a far cry from the small and uncertain mining efforts of 50 years ago to the splendidly equipped and solidly financed organiza- tions that now handle thousands of tons of ore per day. The old mining was largely speculative; the new is practically on a manu- facturing basis. In the old days of mining the aim was, chiefly, to find comparatively rich ore; modern practice looks more toward efficiency in mining and milling, so that vast tonnages of low-grade material may be worked at a profit. The old operators had faith and hoped for good returns; the new ascertain with a fair degree of precision what the available tonnage is, what the cost of mining and treating the ore will be, the time necessary to exhaust the deposit, the capital required, and the net profits to be made. The old mining was financed on a highly speculative basis, and the value of mining stock was largely controlled by the imaginations of the promoters and of the individual holders. In the new régime the financing of mines is often as conservative as the financing of manufactures or railroads, and the value of stock, quoted on the leading exchanges, is controlled by the carefully estimated profits in sight. Of course, with every legitimate industrial enterprise go certain business risks, and mining is not exempted from these. Then, too, valueless mining as well as valueless industrial stocks are sometimes offered for sale by the intentionally dishonest, or the ignorant. However, the prospective purchaser of a mine nowadays, if he is willing to pay for the services of reputable mining engineers, can obtain information on which to base an opinion as to the quality of his investment. The relatively recent development of cheap and efficient methods of mining and of ore dressing has given value to low-grade ore bodies that a few years ago were almost valueless. The iron mines of northern Minnesota have been fruitful in developing efficiency in mining methods, notably the open-cut methods in which steam shovels strip off the overburden and then load the ore directly into railroad trains for transport to the furnace. In 1907 open-cut mining was applied to the low-grade copper ores of Bingham, Utah, with splendid results, and since then it has won a most important place in the min- ing of large masses of low-grade ores in several other mining regions, especially at Santa Rita, N. Mex.

Pyrometallurgy has played a very important role in southern Africa for at least four centuries. It continues to do so, and recent years have seen many exciting developments in pyrometallurgical technology. The wonderfully diverse rich mineral deposits in this area of the world have provided some unique opportunities for industrial processes to be established. The ?Southern African Pyrometallurgy 2006? conference was set up to showcase southern African pyrometallurgical operations, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between people working at various types of smelters. Papers have been obtained from a wide variety of pyrometallurgical plants in southern Africa. These descriptions of plant operations (as well as some history, and highlights of current work) will provide useful reference information for some time to come. Contributions are also included from universities, research organizations, and engineering companies, so that the full spectrum of pyrometallurgical activities can be covered. The plant descriptions will be published on a website, where they can be updated as and when required, with the eventual goal of having a description of every smelter in the region. The conference venue was selected to be the 'Cradle of Humankind' world heritage area, about 40 km from Johannesburg. Not only does this keep the conference within easy reach of the city and yet far enough out into the countryside to allow people to focus on the conference, it is also within easy reach of many pyrometallurgical plants. There is a particular significance to the choice of location, in that the Swartkrans area close to the Sterkfontein Caves is the site of the earliest evidence of the deliberate controlled use of fire by human beings (about 1.3 million years ago), and this is obviously a necessary precursor to pyrometallurgy. The area also lends itself to a very wide range of outdoor, social, and cultural activities to supplement the technical content of the programme. It is hoped that activities such as a hot air balloon safari and visits to the world-renowned Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave will help to make the conference a memorable one for those able to attend. I trust that the ongoing value of the papers and presentations will make all the hard work of the many contributors most worthwhile.

Uncertainty quantification of a spatially distributed variable at any scale can be handled through geostatistical simulation. Large computation time, storage, and post-processing of the realizations are required to obtain a final assessment of block uncertainty. Multi-Gaussian kriging is a flexible alternative to simulation. The idea is to compute the conditional distribution of uncertainty after normal score transformation of the original samples. Under the multi-Gaussian assumption, all marginal and conditional distributions are Gaussian, hence fully defined by their mean and variance. The parameters of the conditional distributions are obtained by simple kriging and can be back-transformed to the original units of the variable of interest. An estimate and any summary of uncertainty can be easily retrieved. The main disadvantage of performing multi-Gaussian kriging is that change of support is not straightforward, that is, calculating uncertainty of block grades. We propose a methodology to overcome this limitation by considering a matrix simulation to generate multiple probability fields. Each probability field is used to draw spatially correlated point values from the point-support conditional distributions, and multiple realizations of the average can be obtained. This permits the calculation of the average over the block and its uncertainty. These blocks may correspond to selective mining units or to volumes from longer production periods relevant for engineering decisions. They can even be disjoint blocks, such as when several faces are mined at the same time. POSTMG, a Fortran program to perform these calculations, is described and a case study is provided.

An examination was made of the filtration characteristics of a haematite slurry using a range of polyacrylamide based flocculants in solutions containing up to 3 per cent sodium chloride. The polymers used were "high" and "Iow" molecular weight and had from 0 to 40 per cent charged groups.Increasing charge density tends to reduce the dose required to achieve optimum performance measured by filtration rate and by cake moisture. In general increased salt addition tends to increase the dosage required to achieve these optima. Both these observations result from the change in polymer extension and accord well with the bridging theory of flocculation.The dose required for optimal cake moisture is up to three times greater than that required for optimal filtration rate. This effect is reasonably consistent for all polymers studied and appears to be non-linearly dependent on salt concentration, with the difference being small at 0 and 3 per cent but quite significant at 1 per cent.

In 1995, mining engineer Alain Gachet thought about using Earth-observation satellite imagery to search for precious minerals. The latest radar Earth-observation satellite, Canada’s RADARSAT-1, had just been successfully launched at the time, creating new opportunities for commercial applications. Gachet was working in Congo Brazzaville as an oil executive and general secretary of Elf Congo for the French national oil company Elf Aquitaine. He understood that the RADARSAT-1 launch promised new and cost-effective sources of data for mineral and oil exploration. “It was early 1996 before I ordered my firstRADARSAT-1 satellite images,” said Gachet. “I was first struck by the quantity of information delivered by the radar images. Linear structures and faults were clearly defined and subtle topographic features were tremendously enhanced,” he said. “It was ‘tree top geology,’ but this kind of information appeared to be key for finding new gold seams.”

The Minerals Availability System (MAS) was formally established by the Bureau of Mines in May 1975 to provide current appraisals of the engineering and economic availability of nonfuel minerals for consideration in the formulation of both domestic and foreign minerals policy, Domes- tic mineral property reports are developed by the Bureau's four Field Operations Centers, and foreign data are obtained under contract. This site-specific information is subsequently subjected to engineering verification and economic evaluation, and the results are analyzed and published as Minerals Availability System Appraisals. The deposit-specific data are also entered into the computerized MAS data base, where a subset of this information, the Mineral Industry Location System (MILS), is available to the public in the form of computer graphics and listings. Other MAS products are also described. The Bureau's MAS personnel are frequently involved in special engineering and mineral economic projects for other Federal and State agencies. MAS personnel also work closely with the private sector, both in the area of mining and processing cost estimation, and as a source of nonproprietary mineral deposit information.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the small town of Andacollo, Chile (population 14,000) in the fourth region. It is approximately 35 miles by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena, and Santiago lies about 300 miles to the south (see map.) Site elevation varies between 3300 feet and 4200 feet. The climate at the site is moderate but arid, with an average annual rainfall of only five inches. Because there is little rain, and the temperature varies only a few degrees (57"F to 75°F); there are no freezing, solution dilution, or pad saturation problems. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

"The Canadian mining industry faces the prospects of a severe shortage of graduate mining engineers over the next decade. This arises from three factors: first, a growth in industrial activity; second, the average age of company engineering and management staff; and third, the reduced number of students in engineering faculties around the world. This paper aims to identify the critical factors underlying the trend of inadequate recruitment into higher education for mining and to examine means of alleviating the problem.This paper is based upon surveys of potential and current students and graduate mining engineers from four mining schools.
