Current production costs and market conditions in the potash industry of the Carlsbad area were studied to determine the potential values of the potash mineral resource that would be lost or foregone if the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility is constructed on the proposed site in that area. The purpose of the WIPP project is to investigate the possibility of developing a nuclear waste disposal plant in the salt formations at the site. Analyses were made of all potash deposits determined to be in the site. Mining and processing under the most favorable recovery systems were considered. Value determinations were based upon estimated operating and capital costs of current mine-mill operations in the Carlsbad area. This study was made for the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) by members of the Federal Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System staff.

Introduction The financial statement of the hypothetical Gold Mining Company, which forms the background of this survey, was designed for the Institute with the express abject of having it assessed in respect to Profits by the several taxing bodies representing the Federal and Provincial Governments, which comprise the Dominion of Canada. On the completion of the figures, copies were sent to the several Ministers of Mines, accompanied by a request that they be submitted to their taxing authorities and assessed accordingly. The response, while it was not general, was very favourable, and at all times we were treated with the utmost courtesy and patience, and what has been set forth in the compilation bears the authentication of the various government officials who are immediately concerned with taxation. The data itself constitutes a fairly comprehensive digest of taxation as it directly applies to gold mining profits in Canada. The Hypothetical Balance-Sheet (See Exhibit A) In the balance-sheet schedules 1 and 2 (Exhibit A), income is divided between taxable and non-taxable classifications, and here it should be noted that the division contemplates only the assessment for Dominion income tax. The same applies to the factors of exchange and depletion. Therefore, in making comparisons, it is to be borne in mind that the set-up for assessment to the Provinces, that is, Manitoba and Alberta, will stand as if the gross non-operating income is taxable, with the reservations as shown in the notes below the schedules.

State ownership of mineral in the ground is not newthe Regalian Right is an ancient concept. And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. Later, unsevered minerals became a factor in negotiations arising under various town and country planning acts. The acquisition of the Rio Tinto mines by the Spanish Government implies political aspirations. The ready solubility of gold in dilute aqueous solutions of the cyanides of the alkalies or alkaline earths provides a convenient method for the separation of the precious metal -from the large surplus of associated materia1. The finely ground ore is pulped with a weak solution of cyanide, agitated to dissolve the gold, filtered and washed. The lowgrade filtrate is then clarified and the gold precipitated by some electronegative agent, the most usual being finely divided zinc or zinc dust. The slight precipitate is collectedon some form of filter coated with a filter aid, the filter cake being then known as "gold slime".A typical analysis of this slime is given in Table 1.

RECENTLY, it has been demonstrated that a considerable densification and interparticle bonding can be achieved if a pressure is applied to a powder compact while the material of the compact is undergoing either a decomposition reaction' or a polymorphic transformation.' The term "reactive hot pressing" has been coined to identify this process in which a phase change is combined with pressure to achieve interparticle bonding. This process is based on a principle which postulates that there is an enhanced reactivity and mobility of the molecular species at the phase-transformation temperature and this effect is utilized for interparticle bonding in powder compacts. This note summarizes the results obtained in an attempt to utilize this technique to produce ceramic-metal composites. In this case, a decomposition reaction of a compound (which after decomposition yielded an oxide) was used to achieve interparticle bonding in ceramic-metal composites. The reactive hot pressing was carried out in a Phillips induction heating unit, using either a graphite or a high-temperature steel die which functioned as both the susceptor and the hot-pressing component. The die was heated to the desired temperature in a helium atmosphere. All cermets produced by this technique were based on alumina as the ceramic phase. Different metal phases such as iron, copper, and chromium were used to study the effect of varying the metal phase on the properties of the composite. a Mono-hydrate (Boehmite) was mixed with different proportions of metal powders (-325 mesh) in dry condition in a mortar and pestle. THE object of this investigation was to make a comprehensive study of the degassing of molybdenum in order to determine how rigorous a treatment was necessary to completely remove sorbed gases from molybdenum electrodes in vacuum tubes. Some work has also been done with tungsten, nickel, iron and carbon. As a logical development of this work it has been shown that the gas is present throughout the body of the metal and a study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in molybdenum and tungsten and the rate of diffusion of nitrogen through molybdenum has been calculated. Tests were made on molybdenum from all the commercial sources and no difference was discovered in the nature of the gases present, the amounts or the ease of removal. The reason for this was apparent when a study was made of the manner in which gases are absorbed by gas-free molybdenum. It is necessary to heat molybdenum to 1760°C.oin a vacuum of the order of 0.001 micron for a time which varies lineally with the thickness, in order to obtain a condition in which no further gas is evolved by the sample. A sample so degassed can be handled and subsequently assembled in a tube and then degassed readily. The gases obtained from molybdenum are carbon monoxide and nitrogen, the nitrogen being the more difficult to remove. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The apparatus is shown in Figs. I and 2. It consisted of two units, a degassing system and an analytical system. Each had a bake-out oven, as shown surrounding the systems in the sketches. The system will be traced, starting from the sample in the degassing system. A water-cooled quartz chamber surrounded the sample. The high-frequency coil, which heated the sample, extended only around this chamber and was cooled by an air blast. High-frequency power of 0800-meter wave length was obtained from a self-rectifying oscillator circuit with a maximum power input of 20 kw. A graded seal connected the quartz to the rest of the apparatus, which was of hard' glass. The temperature of the molybdenum sample was observed by an optical pyrometer through an optical window about 40 cm. distant from the sample. Since the object viewed under these conditions was not 'a black body, true temperature was not observed, but the so-called "brightness temperature." The correction of this to true temperature is discussed in a later section. X-ray diffraction techniques are commonly used in the identification and quantification of fine-grained materials. A relationship exists between the size of crystals in a sample and the degree to which they diffract X-rays. The Scherrer equation relates the broadness of diffraction peaks to the size of crystals responsible for diffraction (Klug and Alexander, 1974). Relatively large crystals of the order of I - 10 ¦m strongly diffract X-rays; the diffractogram of such crystals exhibit narrow intense peaks. As the size of the crystals in a sample is reduced, diffraction peaks become broader and less intense. Crystals less than 10 nm generally exhibit broad, diffuse and low intensity peaks. Some material is so fine-grained and poorly-diffracting that X-ray patterns show very little information in a normal one-hour scan thereby necessitating very long acquisition times of up to 12 hours. The term poorly-diffracting material (PDM) was coined for such material found within the bauxite deposit of Weipa, northern Queensland (Tilley and Eggleton, 1994; 1996). Common regolith minerals such as hematite, goethite and layer silicate clays are quite commonly fine enough to possess a poorly-diffracting character. Noncrystalline and poorly crystalline Fe-Si-Al-oxyhydroxides such as allophane, opal, ferrihydrite and hisingerite, have either a nondiffracting (amorphous) or poorly-diffracting nature (Eggleton, 1987).

Drill core is preferred as the sample material for metallurgical and mineralogical characterisation and flowsheeting of an orebody. The question arises as to how to do this at the economic optimum, since geologists have several other strategic uses for their drill core. The limiting factors are the cost of extra drilling for the metallurgical testwork and the need to preserve the drill core record. In this study, the representative sampling of drill core at an economic optimum for metallurgical testing is addressed. This phase of the drill core work is preceded by earlier drill core characterisation - for which other appropriate sampling protocols are used - that has provisionally categorised the orebody into geometallurgical units. In stratified sampling of drill core, use is made of a version of the stratified approach to compound distributions proposed by Cochran in 1946. Use is made of Gy’s 50-piece minimum sample mass model to estimate minimum requisite sample mass. In the case where sampling and testwork are required on a Lifeof- Mine blend of a given ore deposit, whereby defined ore types or geometallurgical units are present, the sample mass requirement is significantly reduced by working from drill-core at the geometallurgical unit level. A case study using Raglan drill core is discussed. Using nickel as an indicator paymetal, and sampling at a fundamental variance level of 8%, the minimum sample masses for disseminated sulphides, net-textured sulphides, and massive sulphides are 3.80, 7.37 and 4.39 kg respectively. When the same drill-core is sampled as a Life-of-Mine mixture without knowledge of the geometallurgical units, the minimum sample mass increases to 84.28 kg. It is thus possible to assemble a representative Life-of-Mine sample of drill-core more economically, at the same time validating its representativity. Equivalent calculations for copper, platinum and palladium are discussed, with outcomes consistent with this finding. When all four paymetals are considered, one selects the largest minimum mass out of all four cases. This results in minimum sample masses of 11.67, 74.90 and 175.16 kg for disseminated sulphides, net-textured sulphides and massive sulphides respectively. The simulated Life-of- Mine blend would require a minimum sample mass of 377.33 kg to cover all four paymetals.

"Geo5 Software is gaining popularity worldwide due to its expediency in analysis and design of pile foundation. The analysis is based on various theoretical, empirical and semi-empirical methods available in existing literature and various country standards. Moreover, the ultimate resistance of pile in the software is based CSN 73 1002, Fellenius method, NAVFAC DM 7.2 and Tomlinson method. Due to the specificity in calculation of ultimate resistance, it becomes necessary to validate the results arrived using the software for better accuracy. Furthermore, the above-mentioned methods are not necessarily popular in every design offices. Therefore, an attempt has been made to predict the efficiency of Geo5-v15 software to analyze the pile foundation by comparing it with the results obtained using the analysis based on Indian Standard IS 2911:2010, performed with spreadsheet specifically designed for the same purpose. The accompanying outcome of the comparison and several shortcomings found in the design part associated with the software has been highlighted in the later part of the paper. Besides, the optimization tool present in the software is also described for the more efficient and economic design of pile foundation, hence contributing as practical aid to structural engineers.INTRODUCTIONThe analysis of individual pile foundation and pile in groups can be said to include the three main important parameters – Ultimate bearing capacity, Settlement and Structural Design. The first two parameters are to be evaluated to check the reliability of foundation against ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state. The third parameter includes the analysis of pile against both horizontal and vertical load. This parameter mainly intends to evaluate the size of foundation and the amount of reinforcement. Geo5 is a software which can expediently compute the above mentioned three parameters just by the mere input of the necessary factors. The ultimate bearing capacity analysis in Geo5 is based on various theoretical, empirical and semi-empirical methods available in existing literature and various country standards depending upon the drained and undrained condition of soil (Bowles, 1968; CSN 73 1002,1987; Felenius,1991; NAVFAC DM 7.2,1984; Tomlinson,1977). However, the method mentioned in IS 2911 (2010) is not the same and have slight variations in way of evaluating the parameters which affect ultimate bearing capacity. Therefore, it becomes necessary to evaluate the efficiency of Geo5 with respect to the value of ultimate bearing capacity and therefore, asserting the confidence in the software based method for the convenience of the designs in Indian Scenario. The present study aims to evaluate the efficiency of Geo5 v-15 software in predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of pile foundation. The results of the software are compared with the bearing capacity calculated using IS 2911 (2010) with the help of excel sheet. Moreover, as the software is frequently put under revision, therefore a comparison of this version has also been made with the latest version of Geo5 (2017) to check whether the latest revision has accounted for the discovered shortcomings. The design steps performed in the software is also shown. As Geo5 make use of IS 456 (2000) for the design purpose, hence it can be considered as reliable with respect to the estimate of the third parameter. Furthermore, the optimization process is also shown in the later part of the paper to emphasize the simplicity of the software in economizing the design cost."

More gold is being produced now than ever before in recorded history. All over the world huge quantities of ore are being mined and processed, thanks to historically high prices for gold and the use of processing techniques demonstrated as cost efficient in the last 20 years. Over the past 10-15 years prices for many other metals have been depressed, and gold has accounted for a significant proportion of worldwide exploration and development expenditures(l)1. The revenues generated from gold mining are providing greater return on investment, more jobs, and more tax revenues to national governments than ever before. Emerging nations are using the gold industry as a springboard for development; developed nations are continuing to fuel their economies with gold industry revenues; and China and countries of the former Soviet Union are using the gold industry to generate foreign exchange, modernize their mining industries, and take the first tentative steps toward private sector participation in their economies.

"Data will be produced from two uranium feasibility studies that were conducted in 2008, both involving uranium recovery from leached slurry by resin-in-pulp (RIP) with strong base resins. Excellent metallurgical results were produced in RIP pilot plants in both studies, and the loaded resins were eluted with strong sulphuric acid and recycled to RIP in an integrated process. Resin losses by either abrasion or mechanical breakage were immeasurably low.Metallurgical results from these two campaigns will be presented, along with an economic analysis of RIP versus the alternative process of CCD or filtration and solvent extraction.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of uranium directly from pulp with strong base resins in RIP contactors was practiced commercially in the USA in the 1960s, but the process never established itself as a viable alternative to solid/liquid separation and solvent extraction. This was due mainly to the necessity to do a sand-slime separation partially resulting from the unavailability of coarse resin beads, inadequacies in the design of the RIP contactors and screens to separate resin from pulp, as well as problems with the strength and durability of resins in agitated pulps.There have been significant advances in the last 30 years in each of these areas. All the commercial resin manufacturers are now producing very tough, durable, strong base resins, and are manufacturing them in a large bead size that is better suited to RIP applications. In addition, with the emergence and wide spread implementation of the carbon in pulp process in the gold industry in the 1980s, many innovative techniques for preparing leached slurries and separating carbon from pulp have become firmly established. These techniques have proven to be equally applicable to resin separation from pulps in RIP contactors."

This report describes a microcomputer-based instrumentation system for structural monitoring of the circular, concrete-lined Silver Shaft in northern Idaho, The 1-ft-thick concrete lining and surrounding rock mass were instrumented with a total of 12 multiple-point borehole extensometers, 16 pressure cells, 22 concrete embedment strain gauges, and 12 thermistors. The instruments were distributed among four test sites and installed immediately above the shaft bottom during sinking at the 2,414, 4,063, 5,191, and 5,955 levels. Limited access to the instruments prompted the development of a microcomputer-based remote data acquisition system that could be operated from the surface. The system scanned the instruments on a programmed schedule, printed out reduced data, and stored the data for plotting and recall. Data acquisition from off-site and uploading of data to mainframe computers were accomplished by the addition of modems to the basic system. The system is suitable for use in monitoring the structural behavior of any deep mine opening, especially in harsh operating environments and where access is limited.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

MOST recently elected to the limited group of Honorary Members in the A.I.M.E. is the distinguished Australian metallurgist, Guillaume Daniel Delprat. His citation reads: "in recognition of his distinguished achievement as metallurgist, engineer, and administrator in the production of ferrous and nonferrous metals," Mr. Delprat's ability and experience in both the ferrous and nonferrous fields at once distinguishes him from most of his professional brothers. Mr. Delprat's nativity was neither Australian nor English, for he was born in Delft, Holland, in 1856, and educated in Amsterdam. At the age of 22 he went to Spain, as metallurgist for the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Co., Ltd. Afterwards he spent some time with the Bede Metal and Chemical Co., which had mines in both Spain and Norway, and of which company he became general manager. Other positions of responsibility held by Mr. Delprat before he went to Australia included the managing directorship of the Cordova Exploration Co., with properties in Spain and Canada; of the Rincon Silver-Lead Mining Co., in Spain; and of the Deloro Gold Mines, in Canada.

ACCORDING to our office dictionary, geology is "the science that investigates the structure of the earth and its successive physical changes", and a geologist is "one who knows the science of the structure of the earth". No doubt this definition does not suit all of us. Another dictionary would have the definition slightly different. As an example, one dictionary stated that "a geologist is one who practices geology". (Some of our clients told us to quit practising and get to work). There are many different types of geologists engaged in various branches of the profession and some of these are further broken down into subdivisions so that specialization is becoming more and more prevalent. As a result it is, in some cases, doubtful whether or not we are actually dealing with a geologist in the generally accepted sense of the term.

THIS paper presents the results of a study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresis1-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation [z = 47ruu(300)$ Kx] in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, u the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. A convenient source for the derivation of the equation is the book by Thomas,6 The term zeta coefficient is an expression coined to denote the difference between the magnitude of the zeta potential of a mineral suspended in solution A, and that of the same mineral suspended in solution B, which consists of solution A and an additional chemical agent, but is at the same pH. For example, the difference between the zeta potential of galena particles in distilled water and that in any chemical solution at the same pH is a zeta coefficient. "Current understanding of the mechanisms by which glassy and crystalline thin ribbons are formed in high speed continuous casting processes is considered. A computer model of the combined heat and momentum transfer during melt spinning has been developed. The influence of roll velocity and of heat transfer coefficient (between the melt and the roll) on the temperature and velocity distributions within the melt puddle is analysed and the thickness of the extracted ribbon computed. The relative importance of heat and momentum transfer under different conditions is assessed and differences between the casting of crystalline and amorphous strip highlighted.IntroductionHigh speed continuous casting of thin metallic ribbon and strip is currently of considerable interest both to metal processers and to those studying process mechanisms. The practical interest arises both from the potential economic benefits to be gained from a shorter and more energy-efficient production route and from the ability to obtain extended and uniform thin strip having a metastable microcrystalline or amorphous structure with enhanced or unique properties. The latter arise from the rapid solidification associated with the cooling of very thin sections of melt brought into intimate thermal contact with one or two rapidly moving heat sinks.The principal processes for casting thin strip include free jet, chill-block melt-spinning (GBMS) (1), melt drag (MD) (2), planar flow casting (PFG) (3) and twin-roll casting (TRG) (4). For the first three of these, all essentially variants of melt-spinning, melt flows through a nozzle onto the circumferential surface of a rapidly rotating roll, whereas for TRG the melt passes into the nip between two contra-rotating rolls. We shall be concerned in this paper with the single-roll melt spinning processes only. For these, a puddle is established where the melt contacts the roll surface and the length of this puddle l is a function of the process conditions, notably the circumferential velocity of the roll Us and the volumetric flow rate of the melt Q. The contact time between any point on the roll surface and this puddle, or residence time eR(= l /Us) determines the thickness of ribbon t extracted from the puddle. This thickness, in turn, partly governs the cooling rate T and the amount of undercooling in the melt and thus the microstructure of the solidified ribbon."

A matrix analysis of the differences between the camps and communities associated with the Britannia Mine is used to develop an analytical tool. The tool is intended to assist the mining industry as it embraces the many facets of sustainable development. A case study is used to support the identification of key factors that may predict the sustainability of a new mine town. Sustainable communities, like Britannia Beach, are discussed in the context of three pillars of sustainability: value of mining products to society; creating wealth; and, environmental integrity. A sustainable mine town may be viewed as a socio-economic asset as well as an asset to the mining industry.
