"The oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions has been evaluated using electro-analytical techniques. The anodic dissolution process has been established to be a seven-electron transfer process under nitrogen in ammonia–ammonium sulphate solutions and ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. The number of electrons transferred in the carbonate and sulphate salts suggests that the sulphur is oxidised to a thiosulphate intermediate and the copper and iron released as Cu+ and Fe2+. The Cu+ and Fe2+ is subsequently oxidised in solution in non-Faradaic reactions. The deportment of Fe2+ and S2O32- is affected by choice of the ammonium salt used in the leaching process. In the perchlorate salt, only five electrons are transferred, however observations made on the mineral surface after leaching do not support the formation of elemental sulphur. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis of the mineral surface suggest presence of an iron–sulphur surface layer completely free of copper under the ammonia–ammonium sulphate conditions, an iron-rich surface layer under ammonia–ammonium perchlorate solutions and absence of surface layer build up under ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for copper extraction provide a viable route to recover the metal from mixed and low-grade ores, as well as overcome the environmental challenges faced by the traditional pyrometallurgical processes. Chalcopyrite is not only the most abundant of the copper sulphides, but also the most stable, making it recalcitrant to hydrometallurgical processes. Hence, hydrometallurgical processing of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research due to the vaguely understood surface chemistry of the mineral in different aqueous media. Different approaches to hydrometallurgical treatment of chalcopyrite can be carried out. These include thermal treatment prior to leaching, direct leaching and direct electrochemical leaching (Venkatachalam, 1991). Direct leaching of chalcopyrite can be carried out in various solution systems, as reviewed by Roman and Benner (1973) and Venkatachalam (1991). Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants that form stable amine complexes with some base-metal cations while rejecting iron. Leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of an oxidant is possible due to the stabilisation of copper(I) and copper (II) by ammonia at elevated pH levels. In oxygenated ammonia solutions, it has been suggested that chalcopyrite dissolves according to Equation 1 (Beckstead & Miller, 1977a):"

The separating performance of a pilot dry beneficiation system using a gas-solid fluidized bed was investigated with coal from South Africa. The coal used for the study has a low inherent moisture content, a moderate ash content, a moderate volatile content, a low sulphur content and a high calorific value. Its washability is moderate. Experimental results show that the separating quality of the fluidized bed drops gradually as the feed-coal particle size decreases. The probable error, E, values for 50?25mm, 25?13 mm and 13?6 mm coals were 0.04 g/cm3, 0.06 g/cm3 and 0.09 g/cm3, respectively. The cause of the differences in separating characteristics was analysed by particle dynamics and numerical modelling. Furthermore, the pilot fluidized bed was employed to separate 50-6mm coal. In this experiment the coal ash content was reduced from 23.74% to 11.79%, with a probable error, E, value of 0.07 g/cm3and a recovery efficiency of 98.26%. This indicates that the fluidized bed is applicable to the separation of coal from South Africa and has good separating performance and wide applicability. During 1983, Ecuador's gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by a reported 3.3% in real terms, the second consecutive decline in the economy after more than a decade of growth generated mainly by petroleum export revenues. The slowdown was due, in part, to the effects of the world recession, lower foreign demand for oil, depressed world oil prices, and reduced demand and prices for Ecuador's traditional agricultural exports. Inflation accelerated to an estimated 55% annual rate. The sucre was devalued in March, for the second time in less than a 12-month period, by 27% after remaining unchanged during the previous decade. In addition, continuous adjustments were made every weekday, effectively devaluing the sucre another 30% by yearend. Ecuador's production of crude petroleum increased almost 12% in 1983 compared with that of 1982. Average daily production was 237,100 barrels per day (bbl/d), up from 211,300 bbl/d in 1982.

Systems such as Davey Bickford’s Daveytronic® SP blast initiation system and electronic detonators have been an integral part of drill and blast activities in Australia for over a decade, with the significant benefits of electronic blasting well documented. Since 2010 the Multiblast feature has been commercially available, which enables eight individual blast patterns (up to 1500 detonators each) to be blasted in the same firing window. Synchroblast has been in active operation since 2012, which allows a blast of up to 4500 detonators – either as a single blast pattern, or several smaller adjacent blast patterns – to be reliably initiated.Multiblast manages blasts separately but concurrently, allowing all blasts to conduct prefiring checks simultaneously from the firing point utilising only one remote blasting unit. Each blast can be selected and fired individually, in a sequence determined by the operator by scrolling through the colour display. Synchroblast automatically detects the blasting configuration, and manages all detonators as a single blast pattern. This simplifies the design and blasting processes for the mining operation.Multiblast and Synchroblast are routinely employed throughout Australia and globally in both open cut and underground operations, enabling optimal productivity due to increased blast volume and reduced operational downtime associated with blasting events.A number of case studies will be presented in this paper, detailing various mining operations that are consistently blasting in excess of 2500 detonators per blasting event as a part of standard drill and blast operations. In order to increase productivity and decrease reducing agent rate (RAR) of blast furnaces, slag content of sinter ore must be decreased. However, gangue content in iron ore tends to increase because of resource depletion. Therefore, amount of high-grade concentrate in sinter ore feeds should be increased, but this situation causes a decrease in permeability of the sintering bed so that the productivity of sinter process decreases. In order to increase the amount of concentrate, NSSMS has developed the P-type separate granulation method, RF-MEBIOS and SPEx II technologies. These technologies have been introduced to actual sintering machines. In this report, a new technology using microparticles of iron ore is proposed to increase the amount of concentrate in sinter blends. Basic experiments simulating the sinter making process using microparticles of iron ore were undertaken. Crushed pisolite, containing >60 wt per cent -10 µm was prepared for binder. The pisolite microparticle binder was mixed with another Australian sinter feed ore in a high-speed agitating mixer. They were mixed for about one minute, and then granulated using a pan pelletiser. After that, they were added to another raw material mixed by a drum mixer, and then charged in a pot for a sinter pot test. As a result, when the amount of concentrate increased from 13 wt per cent to 20 wt per cent, productivity was almost kept constant using pisolite microparticle binder.CITATION:Kamijo, C, Yamaguchi, Y, Matsumura, M, Kawaguchi, T and Nomura, S, 2017. Structural, mineralogical, and textural data from the Tarnagulla Goldfield demonstrate that the area has undergone three significant phases of deformation. The first phase of deformation (D1) predates the intrusion of the Tarnagulla pluton, which has been dated using K/Ar as 391 ¦ 5MY. We regard this pre-granite deformational event as the major regional deformation. Gold-bearing quartz veins have been deposited in dilational sites on west-dipping reverse faults. These sites demonstrate a geometry related both to faulting associated with D1 and the plunge of the F1 fold axes. This evidence, together with chronology of unmineralised ? D2 and D3 faults, the absence of quartz veining associated with D3 events, and the deformation of carbonate-quartz-biotite-sulphide aggregates within Sl by later S2, lead us to conclude that the bulk of the mineralisation was essentially syn- or late D1 . d18O values for fluids in equilibrium with vein quartz from Central Victoria have indicated equivocal support for either a magmatic or metamorphic origin. Our evidence supports a pre-magmatic origin for mineralisation at Tarnagulla and hence tends to favour a metamorphic fluid source.

This report describes the work performed by Mine Research Company in developing a prototype mobile roof shield during 1971-1972 for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, along with background information leading to the design decisions adopted for the project. In addition, the report evaluates the choice of design and analysis and the results of the project in terms of future possibilities of mobile roof support systems. The report begins with the discussion of the problems of designing, building, and using mechanical and hydraulic roof support in coal mines. It then gives a historical summary of past work with discussions of the design choices made for previous roof support systems.

Extraction of Al(III) from aqueous sulfuric acid solutions into organic Cyanex 272®-carbon tetrachloride systems was investigated from a multi-component mixture containing aluminum, cobalt and nickel. Al(III) extraction efficiency was quantitative with 1.0 M Cyanex 272® in two stages at an aqueous: organic (A:O) phase ratio of 1:1 and an equilibrium pH of 3.2. The stripping of Al(III) from the loaded organic (LO) with different acids indicated sulfuric acid to be the best stripping agent. More than 99% stripping of Al(III) from the LO was achieved using 2 M H2SO4 at an A:O phase ratio of 1:1 in a single stage. The stoichiometry of the extracted species of Al(III) was determined by the slope analysis method. The extraction reaction proceeded via the cation exchange mechanism and the extracted species was assumed to be AlA3?3HA, where HA refers to the dimeric and A the anionic form of the extractant, Cyanex 272®. The extraction of Al(III) was studied in the presence of various ions to ascertain the tolerance limit of individual ions.

To understand the reinforcing mechanisms of the fully grouted resin bolt and clarify its performance in weak roof strata, the field monitoring investigation using instrumented bolts has been conducted in a coal mine. The total time of monitoring was around ten months. In the first 8 month period, the rock bolt performance relates to the initial development of the gateroad and subsequent time dependent strata response. After 8 months, the rock bolt performance relates to the effect of the approaching longwall mining operation, up to the point where the measuring station was destroyed due to the mining operation.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a miniature, portable two-level oxygen-deficiency alarm and produced three prototype models. Each operates from a 4.2-v dc power source, and the highest current drain of any model is 80 ma. An electrochemical cell, which produces an electrical output in proportion to the partial pressure of oxygen to which it is exposed, is used as an oxygen detector. The output of the cell is applied to an electronic circuit that detects two different levels of oxygen percentage below that of normal air, and produces distinct audible signals at these levels. The hazard alarm mode is activated when the oxygen percentage first drops below normal and produces a 500-cps "beep" tone with an intermittency of 1 cps. The danger mode produces a continuous 500-cps audible signal when the oxygen percentage drops still lower.

Slags and fluxes used in metallurgical processes are typically made up of oxides (especially silicates), with additions of fluoride and carbonaceous matter. Despite the efforts made towards understanding the role of slags in various processes, little information is available on the structure of these slags. Tools such as X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and electron microscopy could be used for this purpose. This paper is based on an ongoing spectroscopic and structural investigation of slags and related materials. Spectroscopic studies of various commercial slags (predominantly ferrous), ores, glass and related materials, covering a wide range of compositions, have been carried out to understand the structure. The infrared spectra were recorded, predominantly, using FTIR spectrometer (Bruker IFS 66U) spanning 4000 to 100 cm-1using the KBr pellet method. The resolution was typically 4 cm-1. The spectral outputs have been compiled in terms of bands present (corresponding to different bonds) and then compared with the typical bands expected for such bonds. Efforts are in progress to identify the trends with respect to the chemical composition?for example, the effects of SiO2, Al2O3, and non-bridging oxygens. Data obtained so far indicate some trends such as (i) a shift in the Si-O band (969 to 1099 cm-1) towards a higher wave number with increasing silica content (almost 2 to 92 weight percentage) and (ii) further strong shifts as a function of the alumina content. The oxygen activity of the ladle slag determines the reactivity towards the steel during ladle treatment. Therefore, the in situ measurement of the oxygen activity of slags can be an important tool. The applicability of an electrochemical sensor is examined in this work. The sensor measures the electromotive force (EMF) that is established between a sample of the slag phase that is immersed in the liquid steel bath and a reference system (Cr/Cr2O3). Industrial and laboratory experiments demonstrated the capability of the sensor to detect the influence of the slag components on the measured oxygen potential. Comparison of the measured values with thermodynamically calculated values shows that the measured oxygen activity is systematically too low. This was attributed to a reaction of the steel with the slag sample. To investigate this, further lab tests were performed where the slag oxygen activity was measured after the slag had been equilibrated with the steel. The measured values were dependent on the oxygen activity (aO) of the steel. For industrial applications, it is concluded that the aO of the steel should be known and that this value is necessary for the interpretation of the measured values. "Platinum-group minerals (PGM) typically occur in such low concentrations that quantitative mineralogical evaluation is difficult or impossible. The FEI MLA system used by Vale Base Metals Technology Development has been successfully employed to produce large PGM data sets that are statistically robust. The MLA Sparse Phase Liberation mapping routine produces false colored images that accurately document mineral textures, including intergrowths between various platinum group minerals and between PGMs and other tellurides and sulfides. MLA PGM search results can be used in conjunction with mineral chemistry to calculate platinumgroup element distribution to minerals and the MLA PGM images can be used to produce model grade-recovery curves.INTRODUCTIONThe platinum-group minerals (PGM) found in Sudbury area deposits have been extensively catalogued and reviewed by many authors including, but not limited to: Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), Cabri and Laflamme (1984; 1976) and Cabri (1981). The PGM list currently used has 12 minerals summarized in Table 1. As noted by Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), platinum-group minerals in Sudbury are dominated by tellurides, bismuth-tellurides and arsenides, with an absence of platinum-group element (PGE) sulphides or ferro-platinum alloys such as tetraferroplatinum - PtFe."

The Bureau of Mines is investigating vanadium recovery from various domestic resources. A low-grade carnotite ore sample containing 0.34 pct V20S and 0.04 pct U30S was leached, and the results were compared with those of similar leach tests using a mill-grade sample containing 1.26 pct V205 and 0.19 pct U308. Experiments on the two ore samples included agitation leaching, pugging, salt-roast leaching, and autoclave leaching. None of the leaching methods investigated showed any significant advantage over another except autoclaving, which reduced the leach time but at the expense of greater acid consumption. Typical of the experimental results attained are the data gathered from the agitation leaching tests. Agitation leaching of the mill-grade ore with 100 lb/ton H2S04 resulted in extractions of 94 pct U308 and 33 pct V205. To increase the vanadium extraction from 33 to 91 pct required concentrations of 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103. Complementary agitation leach tests on the low-grade ore required 200 lb/ton H2S04 to extract 94 pct U308, and 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103 to extract 90 pct V205.

After the Treaty is in force, the main concern of the international community twill be to verify that no nuclear test is performed.

Waste areas of a mine should be sealed especially if there is a risk of spontaneous combustion. Leakage through and around such seals can be problematic. Pressure balancing has been one of the favored options to prevent the ingress of air into these waste areas. Balance chambers require maintenance and monitoring to ensure that they are effective. This paper explores the use of inert gas as a means of controlling ingress of air and egress of waste gases as a means of reducing leakage around seals.

Experiments were conducted in 2- and 4-inch-diameter standpipes to evaluate the effectiveness of standpipes as pressure seals. During the experiments, these standpipes conveyed Alan-Wood magnetite (60 to 230 U.S. standard sieve mesh) by gravity flow from one vessel to another of relatively higher pressure. The information obtained has been helpful in a Federal Bureau of Mines investigation of how to make either synthesis gas or hydrogen by a modified steam-iron process employing a continuous recycling stream of granular iron-iron oxide at temperatures of 600° to 900° C. In this process the mixture of granular material flows by gravity from a reduction vessel at low pressures to an oxidation vessel at higher pressures. Data from the 2- and 4-inch-diameter standpipes indicate that it would be practical to use a standpipe as a pressure seal between the reductor and oxidizer. Investigators found that, by gravity flow, the standpipe could convey the Alan-Wood magnetite against pressure gradients up to 1.07 pounds per square inch per foot of column height.

1. Reserves are estimated in the Nemo, Sewanee, Wilder, and White Oak beds of Fentress County, Tenn. The Wilder is the only bed being mined commercially and contains the largest known reserves. Eleven lesser known beds are present in the county, but not enough information on them was available for estimating the reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 102 million tons as of January 1, 1955. This total includes 66 million tons in beds 28 inches and more thick.

The Bureau of Mines initiated a program to address short-and long-term objectives of wetlands restoration as a option for reclamation of lands mined for phosphate. The short-term objectives were to identify a suitable wetland test site, initiate an extensive premining monitoring plan, develop an acceptable mining plan, and recontour and revegetate the test site. These goals were accomplished using a unique combination of expertise provided by Federal and State agencies and private industry. A 6.5-ha forested wetland with an associated streambed was offered by private industry as the test site. A premining monitoring program was established and carried out from May 1982 to October 1983. A control site was established to determine ecological changes unrelated to mining. Clearing and mining began in October 1983 and was completed in April 1984. Grading and streambed restoration was completed in February 1986. Revegetation of the site was completed in February 1987. The program to meet the long-term objective of postmining monitoring is described.
