The key variables in the financial analysis of a mining project include the metal price and the quantities of ore and metal. In general, if the metal price drops, the cutoff grade is increased so as to increase the average grade. This causes recovered tonnages of ore and metal to drop. Discussion is presented of the development of a new method to evaluate the relationship between the cutoff grade, z, the ore tonnage above cutoff, T, and the metal quantity above cutoff, Q. Detailed information is provided on the QTz curves for lognormal and inverse gaussian (Sichel's) distributions. Both these distributions are used as models for the grades in different types of ore bodies, and they are both T-symmetric. The geometry of the QTz curves is simplified, making it easier to work out the impact of minor variation in the parameter values for each distribution

Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process. The Martha Hill project operates with a nett surplus of water, due to the catchment of rainwater on the tailings dam and the requirement to de-water the open pit mine. It is necessary to discharge this surplus, treated as required, to the Ohinemuri River which flows past the process plant.   The treatment plant, adjacent to the process plant, handles all effluent from the Martha Hill operation including water pumped from the mine, excess water from the tailings decant, and seepage from the tailings dam underdrains. To-date the plant has treated and discharged over 800 000 tonnes of water.

The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. An exasperated voice on the other end says, “There has been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men.” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There is something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we are trying to figure out what is wrong” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings. An excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks.” If this is not enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again. A stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Co. No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine.” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, though, if this happens, what do you do? Most people think: “It can’t happen to me.” But mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. A mine’s response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This article examines the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical disaster. The authors then present a systematic crisis-management response.

Experimental Mine, Val d'Or, Quebec, Experiments on the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives have been conducted in a 1 m3 explosion chamber. The explosives tested are ANFO, emulsion, aluminized emulsion and Detasheet. By controlling the composition of the ANFO and the emulsion explosive the oxygen balance could be changed in order to identify the dominant factors in the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives. Experimental results, combined with theoretical calculations, show that the temperature of the detonation products is the most important parameter in the ignition of the dust cloud while the combustible detonation products are of secondary importance in the case of non-aluminized mining explosives. In the case of aluminized explosives and explosives having very negative oxygen balance the ignition of the dust cloud is assisted by the large amount of combustible detonation products.

in underground mines to measure worker exposure to various gases such as methane, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Even in relatively small concentrations, NO2 can produce harmful side effects in underground workers. Mines using equipment powered by diesel engines, carrying out explosive blasting operations, and performing extensive arc welding and/or cutting work will have measurable quantities of NO2 released by these processes. Workers in these areas often use gas monitors to warn of excessive gas concentrations and to help them determine when to increase ventilation air that will dilute these gases, thus minimizing exposures to this gas. Portable gas monitors, used to measure NO2 levels, must be calibrated before each use. Calibration is typically performed using a small portable pressurized cylinder containing a certified gas mixture. The certified NO2 standard mixture, usually 10 ppm NO2 concentration, is diluted with either air or nitrogen gas. To determine the stability of commercially available portable gas standards, two different cylinders containing NO2 in nominal 10-ppm concentrations were examined. One cylinder was diluted in air, the other, in nitrogen. Baseline NO2 mixtures were generated using a standard liquid NO2 permeation tube operated at a constant temperature. Final dilutions of the test gas mixtures were made with air or with nitrogen using a mass flow-controlled gas dilution system. This study showed that, when a permeation-type NO2 generator is used, the electrochemical sensors in portable NO2 monitors provide identical results for gas mixtures whether they are diluted with air or with nitrogen. Two different gas monitors, one with a two-electrode sensor and one with a three-electrode sensor, were used to measure gas concentrations in the two commercially available cylinders. One month after the cylinders were delivered, the NO2-in-nitrogen cylinder, stated to contain 10 ppm NO2, measured 8.13 ppm. The NO2-in-air cylinder, also stated to hold 10 ppm NO2, measured 6.88 ppm. Therefore, before using NO2 gas cylinders to calibrate monitors, it is recommended that their concentrations be verified either by manufacturer recertification or by comparing the stated cylinder gas concentrations to a laboratory-based permeation tube-generated standard.

"This paper is intended as a review of the progress that has been made in the Province of Ontario in the field of acid drainage waste treatment technology.Three years ago, at the Third Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors, we presented a paper entitled ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in Ontario"". At that time I was working for the Ontario Water Resources Commission. The paper turned out to be the very beginning of the Commission's acid mine drainage control program. In the intervening three years, the Ontario Water Resources Commission has been amalgamated with other government groups and has evolved into the present Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Today the Ministry is involved in running one of the most advanced acid mine waste control programs in the world.As a part of its mining program, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment has published three major reports which deal directly and specifically with the industrial waste disposal problems that may arise at a mining operation. In order of publication, these reports are as follows:(1) ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in the Province of Ontario"".This 338-page report covers all aspects of the problem of acid mine drainage and includes detailed sections on acid flow detection, acid flow chemistry and acid flow treatment.(2) ""The Use, Characteristics and Toxicity of Mine-Mill Reagents in the Province of Ontario"".This report, 244 pages in length, gives the chemistry and toxicity of nearly all of the chemicals that find common use in the Canadian mining industry. Most of the toxicity figures quoted are the result of a comprehensive bioassay program that was initiated by the Ministry."

Were the legislators and politicians responsible for the closing of the U.S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Mines (Bureau) in March 1996 fully aware of what they were doing? Throughout the United States? history, the domestic mining and minerals industry has been largely responsible for the nation?s growth and prosperity that had made it a world leader. The mining and minerals industry made it possible for the young nation to catch up with Europe during the Industrial Revolution, played an essential role leading to victories in World Wars I and II and was a core ingredient for continued economic growth. For a number of decades, America?s import dependency on non-fuel mineral materials has continued to increase. (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries). Developing domestic resources to meet current and future demands ? particularly those resources considered to be of strategic and critical value to national security ? is necessary. Federal involvement is required since many of these resources are located on public lands. Another reason for federal involvement is that the success of the industry depends on long-range research programs and advances that may take up to 25 years to become commercially available. This situation requires federal partnership to coordinate the programs necessary to collectively involve the industry, individual mining companies and colleges and universities. So, how was it possible to close a federal agency that had contributed so much to the nation?s welfare in a mandated 90-day period, with more than 1,200 employees losing their jobs?

Recent accelerated exploration efforts in southwest China have progressively quantified the vast phosphate resources in the Yunnan Province. To date, according to Chinese geologists, potential reserves in the province may be on the order of 4 Gt, which would equal the entire US reserve base. Development of this vast reserve is underway at two sites located 60-70 km southwest of Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan. The first, the Kunyang open-pit phosphate mine, produces an estimated 1.5 Mt/a of 22-30% P20,5. The other project located north of Kunyang is the Haikou mine, which the Chinese consider a possible 2.0-Mt/a operation. Because average ore grades run 3% less than those of Kunyang, beneficiation will be necessary. While the latter project has been initiated on a small scale, it is basically still on the drawing board. Brown and Root and the US Bureau of Mines are assisting on the project. Both operations are under the direction a regional administration which reports to the Ministry of Chemical Industries in Beijing. Combined production from both mines could represent some 70% of China's future productive capacity. Ore reserves in the region are estimated at 400 Mt by local officials. Geology of the District The phosphates are considered Cambrian in age and rest on a Precambrian dolomite. The Indian Ocean, Chinese geologists say, may have been the original source. The line of deposition stretches on a trend from Vietnam in the southwest, through Yunnan, into Sichuan Province to the northeast. Because the area is considered very stable from a geologic viewpoint, large quantities of phosphate have been deposited and large outcrops are known to occur everywhere in the province, according to Chinese sources. The Kunyang and Haikou ore bodies are thought to be two wings of an anticline with the former the southern portion, and the latter the northern portion. Each ore body strikes on an east-west axis. While there are many localized phosphate operations throughout the province, the Kunyang mine is the premium producer. Kunyang's Mining Development The Kunyang open-pit mine was opened in 1966. During the early years, operations were considered somewhat disorganized. Systematic mine planning and normal operations were not initiated until just two years ago, according to mine management. In 1979, Kunyang finally reached its design capacity of 1.5 Mt/a. The ore body consists of two phosphate beds separated by a band of shale. The top layer of phosphate varies from 4 to 8 m, averaging 6 m. The middle shale layer is 2 in. The third layer, which is not as rich as the top, is approximately 4 m. The Nancy Creek Tunnel is a deep tunnel, designed to store and convey wastewater by diverting flows from trunk sewers currently at or near capacity in the northwest of the City of Atlanta. The tunnel, constructed in hard rock, has an overall length of 13,300 m (43,700 ft), and a finished diameter of 4.9 m (16 ft). The project is currently under construction by a joint venture of Obayashi/CJB for the City’s Department of Watershed Management. This paper describes the contractor’s techniques and equipment, as well as discussing challenges which were overcome. The project is scheduled to be complete in October 2005.

Otago Schist in the Mount Patriarch, High Burn and Cameron Creek areas of northwest Otago grades from textural grade IIA in the east to textural grade III in the west. The entire region is of the actinolite-pumpellyite metamorphic facies. Lithologies in the area are interbedded turbidite sequences comprising pelite and psammite together with pebble conglomerate, greenschist and metachert horizons. The mineral assemblage of the schist is typically quartz-albite-epidote-actinolite-pumpellyite-chlorite-stilpnomelane-calcite. A good foliation is well defined in the area and is predominantly parallel to bedding, except in hinges of mesoscopic isoclinal folds. The structure of the area appears to be defined by a large southwest plunging isoclinal fold defined by bedding with a steeply dipping axial planar foliation. Kink folding and dextral strike-slip faulting in the area postdates the ductile phase of deformation. Pods of rhodonite, rhodochrosite, spessartine garnet, coombsite, caryopilite, Mnstilpnomelane and Ni-Cu-Zn sulphides were found in concordant metachert layers in the Mount Patriarch area. Metachert was also found in float in the Cameron Creek area. Malachite occurrences relating to copper mineralisation were also noted in a green metachert horizon on the eastern flank of Mount Patriarch. The coombsite, in only the third observation worldwide, is the most Fe-rich variety reported.

"An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original shell top hat liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits.The original liners were chrome-moly steel Norsteel with rubber grates and rubber-lined pulp lifters. The design was based on experiences of other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Liner design modifications were made in an iterative fashion after observing the wear rate profile of the liners; over ten liner sets were implemented. Shell liner design improvements were supported by a design of experiments approach in conjunction with discrete element method (DEM) charge motion simulations. Design optimization took into account lining costs and impacts on operating performance. The team approach to the liner design improvements process is described with emphasis on the application of the design of experiments. The liner wear history and mill operating performance are presented."

It has been thought in the past that New Zealand had ample coal reserves, able to provide fossil fuel supplies well into the future. Such is not the case and every effort must be made to achieve the highest possible extraction rate in all new coal mining ventures. While the relative cost and availability of completion or fuels has been largely responsible for the slow growth of coal production in the past, a world shortage of fuels has given coal a new importance and required better utilisation of coal reserves. New mining ventures in thick-seam coal deposits cannot be planned and designed without geotechnical investigations designed to provide information required by the mining engineer and analyst. Finite element analysis of mine workings may provide essential information on the optimisation of mining techniques and the design of underground support and roadway shapes.

Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

An overall summary and the individual reports of eight workshops to determine research and development needs in western mining ore presented. Problem areas are identified, and recommendations regarding priorities, funding sources, and prime movers are made. The objective of this contract was to identify research and development needs for advancing mining technology as well as health and safety measures for western U.S. Surface and underground mining. This was accomplished by convening a series of workshops where problems could be thrashed out by producers of trona, uranium, open pit copper, underground salt (from the Midwest and New York), underground metal and nonmetal, etc. In addition to problems, future priorities, funding, and the desicion as to who should be the prime mover on R & D were discussed.

Research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the technical feasibility of producing lightweight aggregate from the waste glass fraction of municipal incinerator residues. Tests were conducted to determine the amount and optimum size of glass, the amount of sodium silicate, and the method used to form the material to be expanded. The most suitable mixture, 78 percent glass, 20 percent clay, and 2 percent sodium silicate, was pelletized and then expanded by exposure to a temperature of 1,550° F for 15 minutes The resulting lightweight material had a bulk density of 38 lb/cu ft and exhibited excellent pore structure. Concrete test cylinders made from the light weight aggregate had a unit weight of 104 lb/cu ft and a compressive strength of 2,550 lb/sq in after a 28-day steam cure.

"Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

Equations capable of representing combined first -and second-stage creep behavior include the Andrade, Cottrell-Aytekin, Garofalo, and de Lacombe equations along with a third-degree polynomial in t1/3. Employing some recent high- temperature creep data for arc-cast tungsten the effectiveness of these expressions was evaluated. It was found that, in this instance, the most accurate representations were afforded by the third-degree polynomial in t1/3 and the de Lacombe equation. Also noted was the fact that the Andrade equation gave results just slightly inferior to those obtained with the third-degree polynomial, definitely better than those due to the Cottrell-Aytekin equation, and slightly superior to those furnished by the Garofalo equation. EXPRESSIONS designed to describe combined first -and second-stage creep behavior must possess certain specific characteristics. At time zero the equation must reduce to a strain value corresponding to the instantaneous deformation on loading. Then in the early moments following load application transient-creep behavior must be described to reflect a creep rate which constantly decreases with time. And finally at larger time values linear (or at least nearly linear) strain-time behavior must be accounted for to yield the steady state or minimum creep rate. Some equations, such as the one based on the parabolic creep law, yield fairly satisfactory results in transient analyses but are not effective at all when combined first- and second-stage data are to be analyzed. Other equations give equally accurate results in both instances although in general the complexity of the equation is slightly increased. For example the Andrade1 equation: has found fairly general application in expressing first-stage creep behavior. Furthermore the contribution of the exponential term becomes more and more prominent as the time increases and causes this equation to exhibit a point of inflection at large values of time. With a proper selection of equation constants the curve can be made fairly flat in the region of the inflection point indicating a desirable equation form for combined first- and second-stage creep analysis. Another equation form with the proper characteristic is that of Cottrell and Aytekin:2 e =a +bt1/3 +ct [2] Obviously as time increases the first derivative of this expression approaches a constant value to suggest application to combined first- and second-stage creep analysis. Similarly a third-degree polynomial in t1/3: e -a + bt1/3 + ct2/3 +dt [3] has the same characteristics. Expressions of this type have been shown3 to be very effective in the analysis of transient-creep behavior and the fact that the first derivative has the same characteristic as Eq. [2] suggests use in the combined analysis.

In late 1994, EPA and OSM acknowledged that efforts by any one agency or by the many different agencies to remedy the water quality impacts of decades of contamination from abandoned coal mine lands in Appalachia would not be successful if their disjointed efforts were not unified and if the local watershed organizations were not included. The result of the collaboration between EPA and OSM was the creation of a statement of mutual intent which was a pledge by government agencies, watershed organizations, and the industry to restore watersheds degraded by acid mine drainage from abandoned coal. The presenter will describe the evolution of this pledge from a paper promise to on-the-ground remediation projects.
