TOF-SIMS was used to detect, identify from parent molecular ions and determine the relative concentrations of collectors sorbed on the surface of mineral particles in concentrate and tailings samples from three Canadian concentrators. In the Kidd Creek Zn circuit, sphalerite lost to tailings carried on average a quarter of the amount of isobutyl xanthate present on that recovered to Zn concentrate; amyl xanthate, which is not reported as added to the circuit, was also detected on floated sphalerite and pyrite. At Brunswick, sphalerite particles lost to the scavenger tailings had ten times less amyl xanthate and isobutyl xanthate than those recovered to the Zn final concentrate, while both xanthates were detected on sphalerite floated to the Cu-Pb cleaner circuit. At Matagami, significantly more isopropyl xanthate and isopropyl dithiophosphate were detected on sphalerite recovered to the final Zn concentrate than on that lost to the Zn rougher tailings

North American railroad locomotive operators (engineers and conductors) are exposed to multi-axis vibration and shocks (1, 2). A recent epidemiological survey showed a prevalence of serious type of neck and lower back disorders nearly double that of a control group (3). Ergonomic working conditions are important co-factors in a vibration and shock exposure risk assessment (4, 5). The goal of this study is to illustrate typical work stations (cabs and seats) in US/Canadian type locomotives and assess shock related exposure risk by calculations of the new proposed shock risk indicators according to the new ISO 2631-5 (2004) (6). Methods Locomotive cab and seat inspections were conducted and operators’ activities were assessed by a trained observer. Field measurements (n=50) were obtained during normal revue service following generally accepted guidelines (ISO 2631 (1)). A sub-sample of n=20 locomotives were selected for the calculation of proposed shock indicators (ISO 2631 (5)). Results There has been little change in basic locomotive cab and seat design in the U.S.. Two locomotive cab design concepts are used: the Association of American Railroad (AAR) Control Stand and in newer series wide-body locomotives the “Control Consol” (Figures 1-2), with varying seating conditions, but frequently subjecting the operator to an awkward body posture in addition to the vibration and shock exposure. As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiC1-KC1 mixtures, as first proposed by Gunkz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public hut Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than 90 pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev's figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on' German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of 140 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, SiO2, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, Director, with respect to the iron and calcium Content. Scenario reduction is designed for selecting a representative subset of geostatistical simulations out of a much larger set. Three steps are involved: measuring the dissimilarity between two simulations; finding a metric to measure the distance between any subset of k simulations and the full set of N simulations; and finding an efficient algorithm for selecting the subset that minimizes the metric. This paper focuses on the third question. We show that genetic algorithms are an efficient way of approaching the minimum when the population of subsets to be sampled is large. Two case studies based on the Walker Lake data-set are presented: firstly choosing k=4 simulations out of a total of 100, and secondly choosing 20 out of the same 100 simulations. In the first case it was possible to compute all possible combinations exhaustively and hence to demonstrate that the algorithm converges to the true minimum. This was not possible in the second case. Instead we demonstrate that it outperforms the random draw algorithm used in earlier work. A procedure for tracking individual selections during the iterative procedure was developed. This allows us to measure the evolution in the percentage of progeny resulting from crossing-over and from mutation that survived in the next generation. It gives valuable insight into how to choose the parameter values in the algorithm. Another key finding is that there is a trade-off between the number of individuals per generation and the number of generations required for the algorithm to converge.

This publication records the proceedings of the Tenth International Ferroalloys Congress, INFACON X, and the third INFACON hosted in South Africa. The Proceedings of the previous two South African congresses in 1974 and 1992 serve, as this volume does, as a valuable record of the papers presented at these important events. This publication comes at a time in South Africa?s democratic development where the theme ?Transformation Through Technology? is very appropriate. The ferroalloy industry has played an increasingly significant role in transformation and black economic empowerment in South Africa, particularly through the advancement and sharing of technology. INFACON X plays an important role in this process, and the stakeholders and organisers of this Congress are thankful for the opportunity to hold this event at this time of transformation in our country. The world of ferroalloys, as well as that of the steel and stainless steel industries, has continued to change rapidly. Recent innovations, better use of resources, increased awareness of environmental issues and ongoing efforts to improve occupational health and safety are among the topics addressed at INFACON X and in these Proceedings. The theme of ?Transformation Through Technology? has been chosen to reflect the regional and global developments in the ferroalloy industry, and the crucial role that technology plays. The Proceedings of INFACON X, the first Congress in Southern Africa of the new millenium, represent a milestone in the technical developments in this major global industry. It contains almost eighty papers in twenty Sessions, from authors in twenty countries, covering raw materials, reductants, energy, electrodes, refractories, furnace design, post taphole services, modelling, simulation, control, sensors, fundamental issues and the applications of ferroalloys as related topics. The major ferroalloys, namely ferrochromium and ferromanganese, are covered extensively in many interesting papers. This comes as no surprise, since South Africa is the leading producer of ferrochromium and also plays a major role in the supply of manganese ore and alloys. Papers on ferronickel, silicon and ferrosilicon ensure that all the large-volume ferroalloys are addressed. These Proceedings of refereed papers of high quality will serve the ferroalloy industry for many years to come, as has been the case with previous INFACON events. For the first time in the history of INFACON, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in a searchable electronic CD-ROM format. We appreciate the time and effort that the authors and referees have devoted to making this publication a really valuable document. Their contributions are recorded for posterity and reflect the advancements they and their colleagues have made to benefit the ferroalloy industry. Without these ongoing improvements, the industry would stagnate and not fulfil its role in the advancement of mankind. All papers included in these Proceedings were peer-reviewed by at least two referees. About 130 referees were sourced internationally to fulfill this function, and their valuable technical and editing inputs are gratefully acknowledged. Finally, I would like to thank the Technical Programme and Publication committees, led by Dr. Lloyd Nelson and Dr. Noël Machingawuta respectively. Without the tireless efforts of these individuals and their Committee members, the technical programme and these Proceedings would not have been the success they certainly are.

Failure of in-pit overburden dumps in open-pit coal mines causes debris to flow toward the active working face, threatening the safety of people and equipment. The evaluation of the potential mobility of failing mass will aid in hazard mitigation associated with unwarranted dump failure. The potential mobility is shown by mobility ratio (ratio of total drop between debris flow's initial and final deposition points to total travel distance) and runout characteristics. In light of above, a laboratoryscale debris flow flume was developed to investigate the effect of material gradation and slope angle on runout characteristics and mobility ratio. The total mass of experimental debris mix (Q) is fixed at 30 kg with 20% water content. Experiments at three different slope angles (30°, 35°, and 40°) demonstrate that increasing the proportion of fines in the experimental mix increases runout characteristics while decreasing the mobility ratio. The length and area of the runout decrease as the slope angle increases, while the mobility ratio increases. There is a positive correlation between d50 and runout characteristics at a fines content of 0.1Q, but a negative correlation at a fines content of 0.2Q and 0.3Q. Conversely, there is a negative correlation between d50 and mobility ratio for fines content of 0.1Q, but a positive correlation exists for fines content of 0.2Q and 0.3Q. A new index called the fine-to-coarse (F/C) ratio is used to identify the critical value of fines and coarse proportion that causes a transition from dry granular flow to fluidized debris flow.

"INTRODUCTION Wright Engineers Limited is active and has extensive experience in the design of pressure oxidation plants for the treatment of refractory gold ore and concentrate. In addition to the Mercur oxidation facility, similar projects undertaken during the last few years include the 3000 ton per day acid oxidation plant for the Getchell Mine, Nevada, a concentrate treatment autoclave for Asamera in 1984 and a feasibility study of a 50-tons per day autoclave plant for Consolidated Professor's Duport property in Ontario. The Equity Silver antimony and arsenic precipitation autoclaves, and the low pressure autoclaves at Key Lake Uranium in Northern Saskatchewan were also engineered by Wright in recent years.In August 1986, Wright was retained by Barrick Resources (U.S.A.) Inc. to add a 750 tpd pressure oxidation circuit to the existing mill at their Mercur Gold Mine, Utah. This paper describes this facility and outlines the start up in the spring of 1988 and subsequent successful operation. MERCUR OPERATION The Barrick Mercur Gold Mine is located at the south end of the Oquirrh Mountains in Tooele County, Utah. The carbon-in-leach (CIL) process plant camnenced operation in 1983 with a design throughput of 3000 tpd and has since been expanded to handle rrore than 5000 tpd. 'IWo ore types are mined, an oxide ore and a refractory ore, which is by Barrick's definition ""an ore from which less than 60% gold extraction is achieved by a standard CIL amenability test."" Typical of many sulphidic/carbonaceous ores, the refractory gold does not respond well to the cyanidation process. As a result, refractory ore has been stockpiled since the start of mining. As of June 1987, Mercur had about 570,000 tons of refractory ore stockpiled and 5.7 million tons of proven and probable reserves, grading 0.06 oz/t including approximately 3.5 million tons of tailings from the previous operation grading 0.55 oz/t. In 1986, Barrick decided to build a 750 ton per day pressure oxidation plant to process these ores. The process, for which a patent was granted, comprises pressure oxidation of the sulphides in an alkaline environment. It was developed in 1981 but was set aside in preference of a CIL plant treating only oxide ores by the previous owner of the property, Getty Oil. This process is capable of increasing gold recovery from the refractory ore from as low as 35% by conventional CIL processing to more than 85%. In 1986 Wright Engineers was engaged to undertake a feasibility study based on batch testing. This lead to a decision by Barrick Mercur later that year to build the commercial pressure oxidation plant. Wright was awarded the contract for engineering, procurement, construction managernent and commissioning in March 1987. The plant was mechanically complete in January 28, 1988, and was in operation by February 1988."

Without an adequate data sample there can be no Reliability Analysis (RA). Without analysis there can be no systematic, verifiable improvement in reliability or in operational economy. A sample is a collection of life cycles. A beginning and ending event define a failure mode life cycle. Well known obstacles impede the reliability engineer in his role to analyze maintenance data. The main problem lies in the difficulty to obtain analyzable data samples. Although modern Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMSs) should provide the needed information they rarely deliver samples of adequate quality. Cerrejon, an integrated mining operation in Colombia, South America solved the information management problem by applying a "Living Reliability Centered Maintenance (LRCM)" process to its fleets of Trucks, Graders, Dozers, Loaders, and Shovels. This paper describes a method wherein completed work orders capture reliability analysis enabling information. The 'right' maintenance observations reference significant failure modes. Work orders link to records in a continuously growing Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) structured knowledge base. Grouped and filtered knowledge-to-work order links, being instances of failure modes, provide the samples required by reliability analysis software tools and methods. LRCM software and related procedures facilitate the growth of knowledge, manage the work order-to-RCM relationship, and generate samples for subsequent reliability analysis.

It will elaborate on the practical application of Supervisory Training and Management Development.Why are Supervisory Training and Management Development important? The answer has been the subject of many textbooks. Dr. Ken Blanchard, author and consultant, addressed this issue concisely when he said that effective managers and organizations must do two things, ""get results and develop people"". lPeople development at IOC is best illustrated through its supervisory training and management development programs. For the past twenty-five years IOC has been recognized as an industry leader in the training field. Periodic studies have played their role in establishing and maintaining this distinction. For example, in 1974, the company decided to review and up-date all its training programs. At this time, it established its own Task Force on Training and this resulted in the development of many of our present programs. Today, Supervisory Training (i.e. for first and second level management) at the Carol Project in the Labrador City area consists of various programs including: New Foreman Induction, Foreman Entrance School, Basic Management Skills, Management II, and Effective Presentations."

A goal of the Federal Bureau of Mines is to minimize the undersirable environmental conflicts and impacts associated with mineral processing operations. To help reach this goal the Bureau operated a citrate-process pilot plant for the removal of sulfur dioxide from lead smelter sintering machine waste gases to test the process. The process uses a carboxylate solution such as citric acid to absorb sulfur dioxide from waste gases. The absorbed sulfur dioxide is subsequently reacted with hydrogen sulfide to precipitate sulfur and regenerate the solution for recycle. Nominal capacity of the pilot plant was 1,000 scfm of 0.5 vol-pct sulfur dioxide gas. The pilot plant was operated for over 5,400 hr and produced about 55 net tons of sulfur. The operation demonstrated that (1) 99 pct of the sulfur dioxide could be removed from lead smelter sintering machining waste gases containing from 0.1 to 0.6 vol-pct sulfur dioxide, (2) sulfur precipitation and solution regeneration with hydrogen sulfide in conventional stirred vessels was readily controlled, (3) precipitated sulfur could be continuously recovered as a 99.S-pct-pure product by flotation and melting, and (4) 78 dry-vol-pct hydrogen sulfide gas could be produced from pilot-plant product sulfur, natural gas, and steam.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM The technique reported here involves measuring the air pressures generated within sealed boreholes located behind blasts. Results from twelve free face blasts in competent rock environments a represented. There were no instances of high pressure gas penetration, even at distances corresponding to less than one blast burden. Rapidly generated underpressures were measured in most holes, with the magnitudes of the peak pressures decreasing with distance behind the blasts. It has been proposed that the under pressures are the result of new volume created due to crack formation and overall rock mass dilation. The experimental evidence is consistent with this, including a correspondence of the onset times of the peak underpressures with the nominal firing times of the nearest blastholes. New post-blast cracks were observed when using borehole video cameras in the monitoring holes. A calculation of new volume produced within the monitoring holes is proposed as an indicator of damage. While the data exhibit considerable scatter, there is a power function dependence on scaled distance, which resembles that of typical vibration data. The data also lie within the normally quoted vibration regimes for rock damage and are consistent with measured extents of damage. It is concluded that this technique may provide an inexpensive and practical comparative measure of near-field rock damage due to blasting. It is further concluded that gas penetration is not a common phenomenon. Damage appears to be mainly attributable to the nearest blastholes and the control of charge mass in perimeter blastholes is emphasized for damage minimization.

This paper describes operating gains resulting from standardizing operating and maintenance practices to improve the performance of the pebble crushing circuit at he Empire Concentrator. Past efforts have led to improved operating time but no additional throughput gains. New Operating standards and checklists were developed and introduced. The content and frequency of the review process indicators was then changed to take advantage of the new practices resulting in an increased feed rate and availability through the pebble crushing circuit.

This paper describes the use of post- tensioned rock anchors to reduce the risk of future damage to a residential structure as a result of coal mine subsidence. The project described in this paper was performed by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) of the U. S. Department of the Interior. The OSMRE was created to administer Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. The responsibilities of OSMRE include "reclamation and restoration of land and water resources, adversely affected by past coal mining including prevention, abatement, control of coal mine subsidence. ?('l) Consequently, OSMRE has been addressing mine subsidence problems since its initial subsidence stabilization project in 1979. Stabilization activities have primarily consisted of supporting the overburden material by injecting materials through drilled bore holes into the underground mine voids. Injection of various materials into mine voids, including fly ash mixtures, coal refuse, cement grout, and gravel has proven to be a successful method of reducing mine subsidence-related surface movements, and has been extensively utilized in mitigating mine subsidence problems. However, the cost of drilling for injection can be extremely high in areas where the depth to the coal seam is great.

Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resource potential of the Log Cabin Saddlebag, Hall Natural Area, Horse Meadow, and Tioga Lake RARE II areas in Mono County, California. These areas, along the east slope of the Sierra Nevada, are underlain by Paleozoic metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Log Cabin Mine and Saddlebag Lake roof pendants. The roof pendants are in Cretaceous granitic rocks. Pleistocene volcanic flows cap some of the older rocks, and glacial till and outwash locally cover the bedrock. The region was eroded by alpine glaciers. Four parts of the Log Cabin Saddlebag area have moderate gold and silver resource potential. Moderate potential for gold and silver resources was identified in one part of the Hall Natural Area and low potential for tungsten and molybdenum in two other parts (fig. 1).

Ferro-alloys are sold according to the size grading specifications of users. Fines are produced during crushing and the amount produced depends on the crushing process and the physical characteristics of the ferro-alloy. The market value of fines has declined. Market demand is very weak and in some extreme cases is nonexistent. An induction furnace melt process has been developed to solve this problem. The process feasibility has been demonstrated on a small scale with charges of approximately 2.5 kg. The piloting was carried out using a 100 kW furnace with a metal liquid capacity of 140 kg. The operating parameters were determined during the pilot process. The procedures were defined and the equipment required for melting fines produced at the client's site was sized. With the production of ingots, the client can now recover the full value of ferro-alloy fines.

Mountaintop removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly 30 years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches in whole and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. MTR is highly efficient, even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in a real extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impact on the surrounding area. During the past two years, however, the debate over MTR mining has grown quickly and has become very intense. This article describes chronologically issues raised by various parties, legal actions, impacts on mining permit applications and research projects developed to address the issues.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Mining) degree As a partial fulfilment for the degree of B.Sc. (Eng) (mining) at the University of the Witwatersrand, a dissertation was to be completed in the mining industry. This was done at Finsch mine, with the purpose of determining the best solution to the required secondary breaking problem. In order to complete the study of the secondary blasting method available for use in the new block 4, cave mining method at Finsch mine the following problem statement was identified and solved ?The methods currently in use, for the secondary breaking of oversize rocks at their source in the current production levels, are to be investigated, and their applicability to the new block 4mining project determined?. To effectively achieve this problem statement above; time was spent researching and investigating, in depth, the methods that are currently in use at both Finsch and Koffiefontein mines; so as to gain practical knowledge of these. The methods were identified and independently evaluated, taking into consideration factors such as costs of the equipment, time to break oversize rocks, advantages, disadvantages, safety and labour requirements, etc. This in turn then allowed for a direct comparison between the methods and the decision as to the best to apply to the new block 4 production level. The methods that were investigated included: ?Concussion blasting, where concussion bombs and lay-on charges are used to break hang-ups and boulders. ?Drill and blast methods, where holes are drilled in large rocks and charged manually with explosives. ?Emulsion secondary blasting, which is a new project in use at Koffiefontein mine from African Explosives Limited. ?The Ro-BustTM breaking system, a hydro-fracturing breaking system. Once all the methods had been evaluated and compared it was found that the Ro-BustTM Breaking system was the most applicable for the breaking of boulders, with, the Emulsion Blasting System being used for hang-ups.
