This report describes the procedures and summarizes the results of an investigation of surface subsidence above caving blocks at the San Manuel mine, San Manuel, Ariz., in order to obtain quantitative information on subsidence and ground movement caused by mining large volumes of ore. This investigation is one part of an overall study of rock mechanics being undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Attention was given to the improvement of a rapid and precise method of surveying a large number of subsidence pins and cracks in the surface terrain. Photogrammetric methods were used as an adjunct to the triangulation subsidence surveying as well as in ordinary topographic work Maps of various kinds were prepared to show the results obtained. The computation of the survey notes was programed for an electronic digital computer at a saving of time and expense over the use of a desk calculator and trigonometric tables.

The Federal Bureau of Mines contacted 29 organizations--mine maintenance departments and equipment manufacturers--concerning service experience and construction of diesel exhaust-gas water scrubbers. Scrubbers are used primarily on mobile diesel-powered mining equipment subject to 30 CFR 36. Because the scrubbers cool exhaust gas and act as flame arresters, their failure would compromise safety in underground mines. Scrubber maintenance problems and frequency and modes of failure were identified, and construction materials and techniques were evaluated. Three failed scrubbers were randomly selected from two cooperating mines, and their modes of failure were determined. In conjunction with failure analyses, mine water and scrubber water solution samples were chemically analyzed to characterize corrosive properties. Sludge and mineral deposits and different types of corrosion and metal fatigue were identified as problems leading to scrubber failure. The corrosion process is explained; maintenance practices, construction materials, and manufacturing methods that could be used to reduce premature failures and allow longer effective scrubber life are identified; and basic changes in scrubber design are suggested. If type 304 stainless steel is used throughout the scrubber and regular maintenance is performed, long, dependable service can be expected. Other materials such as 304L, 316, or other more exotic steel alloys may be necessary under certain conditions.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health re­searchers conducted a study to investigate the human response issues related to wearing a self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR). The goal was to develop training to educate miners on what they could expect from their units during an escape. Subjects included miners who had experience wearing SCSRs, manu­facturers, and researchers. Results identified nine key areas of concern: (1) starting the unit, (2) unit heat, (3) induction of coughing, (4) unit taste, (5) difficulty in breathing while wearing the unit, (6) quality of the air supplied, (7) nose clips, (8) goggles, and (9) the behavior of the breathing bag. In addition, researchers reviewed the literature on human response under duress. This article describes the expectations training program, which comprises the findings of the SCSR study and what is known about the normal human response in an emergency. The authors present background on SCSRs and the SCSR switchover procedure mandated in the recent federal Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, which provided the impetus for the expectations training. This instructors guide is intended for use in a course which teaches metal and non-metal mine inspectors to perform surveys for inhalation contaminants in above ground metal and nonmetal mine work areas. The handbook entitled "Handbook for Surveys of Inhalation Contaminants in Above Ground Metal and Nonmetal Mining and Processing Work Areas? is used as a manual during the course. The manual contains a survey check list, rules for determining if sampling is required, a list of most frequently encountered contaminants, a list of candidate contaminants and their sampling conditions, and a description of control procedures and devices. There are several experiments in this guidebook which the trainees perform to acquaint them with the sampling systems.

U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel studied the 33,900-acre Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area (NV-060-338), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The area studied lies between the towns of Silver Peak and Dyer, about 40 miles southwest of Tonopah, in Esmeralda County, Nevada. There are no producing mines in the area studied. However, development of Sunshine Mining Company?s Sixteen-to-One silver-gold mine, located in the Silver Peak mining district near the eastern edge of the study area in the early 19801s, has stimulated recent interest. The Sunshine Mining Company claimed two sites within the study area in 1985. Also, Intermountain Resources, Incorporated, located a group of claims at a prospect along the west side of the study area in the Dyer mining district, and in 1986, began drilling. Other claimants are holding two other claim groups by assessment. At the five currently (1987) held sites, precious metals occurrences are being investigated. There are no patented mining claims or mineral leases in the study area.

M.S. Azun I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author's conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey's lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author's paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, I may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [ ] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [ ] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. T ve B, in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semi-variogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. [The Bureau of Mines has conducted a field hydraulic fracturing experiment to determine the preferential orientation of induced fractures in oil shale at a depth of about 400 feet in the Green River Basin of Wyoming. The hydraulic fracturing treatment was performed by injecting extremely viscous water-base gel and 8- to 12-mesh sand into the oil shale through straddle packers set in an impermeable section of smooth-walled, 6-1/4-inch-diameter open hole. An impression packer proved that a horizontal fracture, which has an average width of about 1/2 inch at the borehole, was induced. A corehole drilled 100 feet from the fractured well intersected the fracture and confirmed its horizontal orientation. Because a horizontal fracture was successfully initi¬ated, it is inferred that the creation of multiple, closely spaced horizontal fractures may be feasible in Green River Basin oil shale.]

Distribution of minor elements in sandstone-type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau is being studied by the USGS on behalf of the A EC. A primary objective has been to provide basic data which could be useful in geo-chemical exploration for new deposits. The basic statistical measures — similar to those used in sedimentary petrology—are described. The underlying principle is that the frequency distributions fit or approach the log-normal form. Since 1952 the U. S. Geological Survey on behalf of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission has conducted a study of the distribution of minor elements in sands tone-type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. A primary objective in this study has been to provide basic data which could be useful in geo-chemical exploration for new deposits. Among the basic data considered important are estimates of the abundance and habit of each element in the ore and in the host rocks. It has been found that a few basic statistical techniques, and variations of these techniques, are useful in this type of study. Some of the basic techniques have been used to advantage by researchers in geochemistry and in other fields of geology, especially sedimentary petrology; others have been used to only a limited extent. Among the latter is the linear correlation coefficient, which has proved useful in assessing the element associations in a particular rock type without analysing individual mineral separates. In computing the basic statistical measures a scale has been used which is, in some ways, similar to the phi ($) scale used by sedimentary petrol-ogists in grain-size studies.' FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS It has been recognized for some time that the results of analyses for a given minor element in a suite of samples of rocks or ores yield frequency distribution curves which are approximately normal when the curves are plotted on logarithmic or geometric scales. In other words, the analytical results give an approximate lognormal frequency distribution. A classical example is given by D. G. Krige2 in the study of the distribution of gold values from a mine on the Witwatersrand. Another example is shown in Fig. 1, the distribution of barium concentrations in samples of uranium ore from the Chinle formation. The geochemical data are analogous to grain-size data gathered by the sedimentary petrologist. Both types of data, after simple logarithmic transformations, may be treated by conventional statistical methods based on the normal distribution. This is not to say that other types of transformations may not serve equally well or better for particular element distributions.3 Spectrographers and other analysts are quite aware of the dependence of their precision on the concentration of the element present.4 For example, in the part per million range the variation may

In 1991, LTV Steel Mining Company decided to close an open pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota, using a passive treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. Over 50 million metric tons of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages, and prior to closure annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5-50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH ranges from 5.0 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required. Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to over 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992, and have removed 60-90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1% of those for an active treatment plant. Since mine drainage problems can continue for over a hundred years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland treatment systems within seven years.

Up to now, Topsøe WSA (Wet gas Sulphuric Acid) plants have been in operation for almost 30 years, and close to 80 plants have been sold. In spite of its unique features and ability to treat gases without any prior drying, the WSA technology has had certain restrictions with regards to SO2 concentration in the feed gas, and the overall conversion of SO2 by catalytic means has been limited to approx. 99.7%. In commercial scale sulphuric acid production on the basis of elemental sulphur and metallurgical off-gases, there is a demand for higher SO2 conversion and treatment of gases with a higher content of SO2. Therefore Topsoe has further developed its WSA technology to cope with these demands. This paper will explain more about the principles of such new development and leave the delegate with a better understanding of the potentials of the new generation of the WSA technology from Topsoe.

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

The Bureau of Mines has programmed for publication a series of Reports of Investigations of studies it has undertaken on low-temperature phase equilibria of several helium-bearing natural gases. This report is the second of a series of papers of the same general title; it is anticipated that additional reports of this series will be published. The advent of a helium conservation program and the prospect of production of helium by private industry, make it especially desirable to publish these data. This report describes phase equilibria related to a natural gas that is processed for helium at the Bureau's Exell Helium Plant (located about 35 miles north of Amarillo, Tex.). Carbon dioxide and water in the gas were removed before making the study; hence the data obtained are representative of the gas stream immediately after similar preliminary treatment in the plant process. Phase equilibrium data were obtained for conditions from -50° to -275° F. and from 100 to 500 p.s.i.a. Analyses of samples were made as follows: For a given run at a selected temperature and pressure, samples of the vapor and liquid phases were analyzed by mass spectrometer, and an additional sample of the liquid phase was analyzed for helium by means of special apparatus (7). 4

Transalloys produces 160 000 tons of SiMn per annum from five AC submerged-arc furnaces. The lime-ore melt from two AC open-arc furnaces is contacted with SiMn to produce 50 000 tons of medium carbon FeMn per annum. Metallics in the slag are reclaimed in a jigging plant, which has been in operation since 1999. The flow of materials between the jigging plant and furnaces has been optimised. The amount of recycle slag in the feed of the SiMn furnaces has been decreased by more than 30% which still provides satisfactory stability of the furnace operation. The jigging plant has absorbed all the additional slag generated, to recover SiMn metal. A review of the raw materials used and operating parameters for SiMn production was also undertaken. Slag to metal ratios were decreased by more than 30% by reducing the slag recycle, removing magnesite from the recipe and introducing high-grade ore. Electrode penetration was improved by reducing coke levels and by utilising more reactive coal. The pitch circle diameter (PCD) was reduced to get a better operating stability on furnace no 5 using the MINSTRAL Control System. Energy consumption on the furnaces improved by more than 15% while SiMn production increased as a result by more than 18%.

The Bureau of Mines compared longitudinal strain energy output of a percussive drill to energy determined by measuring maximum piston velocity. Strain gages were used to determine the strain-time waveform and its amplitude at seven levels of operating pressure and eight levels of thrust. The longitudinal strain energy was found to be approximately 14 ft lb less than the maximum piston energy at comparable operating conditions.

The introduction of pre-concentration technology into the underground narrow-vein mining scenario has the potential to change the entire economics of utilizing bulk-mining methods in these situations. An idealized integrated underground mining and processing system, comprising elements of bulk mining, underground preconcentration and backfill systems is presented. Through simulation and a systems engineering approach, the implications of enabling the utilization of bulk mining methods in a narrow vein deposit through the adoption of this technology is considered. Parameters considered include orebody characteristics, ore mineralogy, grade, metal value, mining rate and cost.

NIOSH has developed an active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels which are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible, and vibratory indicators and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak, and on a highwall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed and proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

In this study, the effects of slag compositions, slag amount, temperature, and carbon content of steel on the manganese and phosphorus distribution ratios during converter steelmaking were analysed using the classical regular solution theory, and industrial tests were performed using two 80 t top-and-bottom combined blown converters (duplex melting process). The results indicate that the slag amount, temperature, and carbon content in steel are the main factors affecting the manganese yield when converter slag compositions remain constant. The FeO content of the slag has a strong impact on the manganese distribution ratio, while the slag basicity and MgO content have no obvious effect. The calculations and experimental results show that the phosphorus distribution ratio increases sharply with increasing slag basicity R, but then decreases with the increase of MgO and MnO contents in the slag. The final slag in converter steelmaking should have the following characteristics: 3.5 < R < 4.5, 15% < (FeO) < 20%, and 6% < (MgO) < 8%. The slag amount should be controlled appropriately at the same time. The results of this investigation would be useful in deciding on the application of manganese ore in alloying and identifying the slagging regime in converter steelmaking.

The New Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a classic suspension bridge founded on concrete caissons. Caisson construction was complicated by the proximity of the existing bridge piers, only sixty feet away. High capacity plate anchors were used successfully to moor the new caissons in currents as strong as seven knots during construction.

The literature of explosives and blasting consists of a great variety of printed materials. These materials include technical papers, books, and articles by individuals and organizations; manufacturer’s product catalogs and brochures; handbooks offering guidance for the field blaster; complete encyclopedias on the subjects, and short entries in general-interest encyclopedias; government publications; proceedings of organizations devoted to the subjects; magazines specific to the subjects; articles in general circulation magazines; and other miscellaneous sources. In short, there is a multitude of literature on the subject, some well indexed for retrieval, but most not. This presentation will be a broad-brush look at some of the most important or interesting literature on the subject, since in no way can all the various references be mentioned, much less covered in depth. To illustrate the presentation, interesting materials from the author’s collection will be shown.
