The design of foundations for the tall buildings of lower Manhattan rely on the use of high capacity, rock anchors to resist overturning forces generated by lateral loads from wind, earth, water and, to a lesser degree, seismic forces. Once completed, the proposed towers at the World Trade Center (WTC) site will be among the tallest buildings in New York City. The towers are exposed to coastal winds and from several levels of below grade structure soil and water loads. The design loading required under the current New York City Building Code (NYCBC) is similar to the requirements of the building code used to design the original WTC Twin Towers. We will compare how rock anchors were deployed in the Twin Towers and how they are used in the new buildings. Changes to the building code are less significant that the changes to the design of the structure; that is how the outer skin or perimeter structure interacts with the building core. The result is a significant increase in the number of rock anchors required for the new buildings when compared to those installed in the original WTC Twin Towers.

This report is an engineering-economic evaluation of alternate methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. It consists of evaluations of parting stowing techniques applicable in a representative, thick seam western United States mine. Methods are examined for their potential implementation, and an estimated operating cost per yard of material moved is developed. The methods are of two categories castback or haulback. Haulback methods use truck haulage except With scrapers, and the castback methods are a direct stowage with no intermediate haulage equipment. Possible equipment combinations include draglines, shovels, hydraulic backhoes, bucket wheel excavators, scrapers, and front end loaders. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the effective competetiveness of the various alternatives.

Maintaining an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs is the overall goal of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior. One method of achieving this goal is to conserve scarce metals by cladding a plentiful base metal, such as iron, with a scarcer metal. To investigate cladding, a vacuum-rolling mill capable of rolling bimetal specimens at temperatures to 1,300° C in a residual gas pressure of 2 x 10-5 torr was established. Metals that were successfully bonded to iron included stainless steels, chromium, nickel, nickel alloys, copper, and several refractory metals including molybdenum and titanium. The effects of the rolling temperature, reduction in thickness, rolling speed, and residual air pressure on bonding strength and bend ductility of the bimetals were determined. Optimum rolling conditions produced bimetals with bond shear strength essentially equal to that of the iron base metal.

A novel instrumentation system has been developed which enables simple, quick, and accurate measurement of vehicular dynamics within low speed ranges. The system, consisting of a microwave transceiver and microprocessor data acquisition and reduction system, measures the deceleration dynamics of low-speed mining and construction equipment. It makes the basic measurement, calculates key parameters such as average deceleration, initial velocity, stopping distance, and brake system delay time, and produces autoscaled graphs of velocity, acceleration, and displacement versus time.

Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.

Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended. Outline This paper will consider the implications of the mine closure provisions set out in the new Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and draft regulations. A comparison will be made with the existing provisions in the Minerals Act and the mine closure policy of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME). The paper will consider whether the new provisions have the potential for improving performance as regards mine closure. It will investigate the financial provisions requirements and the implications of these provisions for mines. It will consider the requirements for a social and labour plan and consider the implications of this for mine closure and its funding. It will analyse the provisions relating to the transfer of environmental liabilities to third parties and consider the implications of this in the case of closing mines and non-closing mines. Finally it will consider the issue of residual legal liability of a mining company once a closure certificate has been issued.

The refining of two molten Ag-Cu alloys, containing 7.5 and 11.2 mass% Cu, with a borosilicate slag was investigated using both air and pure O2 to determine the effects of the following variables: flow rate of oxidising gas; injection time; mass of sodium borosilicate flux; and injection of the oxidising gas into either the slag or the metal. The results demonstrate that more than 90% of the Cu can be removed with Ag losses of less than 5% and that refined metal with a Cu content of less than 0.5 mass% can be produced. Ag losses to the slag increased with the amount of Cu removed, and a mechanism is proposed to account for this

This article uses the case of the Royal Bafokeng Nation to argue that royalties and dividends from mineral resources, if managed well, can provide direct benefits to the surrounding community even while the state collects its share of mining revenues through taxation. The key to this model is the effective management of the resource income flowing into community coffers. Where some of this income may fund urgent interventions in the community, a portion of the income can also be used to establish an intergenerational wealth fund to meet the needs of future generations. As a depleting resource, minerals like gold and platinum are not a sustainable source of income, and must be replaced over time by more regenerative income streams. These strategies and dynamics are manifest in the Royal Bafokeng Nation?s status as both community and quasi-municipality, a labour hosting and a labour sending community, a mine operator and a mine owner. The Royal Bafokeng Nation also owns one of South Africa?s largest community-based investment companies, which channels revenue derived from platinum deposits into a broad investment portfolio that in turn funds an aggressive social development program for 150,000 people living in twenty-nine rural villages.

It is known that the CaO-FetO-P2O5slag system has a wide liquid miscibility gap at steelmaking temperatures and this two-liquid slag phase has many advantages such as high activities of both FetO and CaO and high amount of P2O5. The phosphorus distribution ratio between the two-liquid slag and molten steel was confirmed to be higher than that between CaOsat.-FetO-P2O5slag and molten steel. The two-liquid slag may be useful for dephosphorization of molten steel and reduction of slag volume. Furthermore, the phase equilibrium of two-liquid CaO-FetO-P2O5slagsaturated with MgO was measured to determine the applicability of the two-liquid slag to dephosphorization in steelmaking process. Nonsteady-state flow of slightly compressible liquids in porous media of non-uniform properties has been the subject of a number of recent studies. Most of these studies considered one-dimensional flow in systems with cylindrical geometry and with the properties of the porous medium varying with radial distance only. A. Houpeurt' studied the problem in its general form by examining the solutions of the differential equation, In Eq. 1, the permeability k and the porosity + are arbitrary functions of radial distance. Houpeurt concluded that, except for special forms of the functions k and the problem is not well suited for mathematical treatment, but lends itself to high-speed digital computation. Carslaw and Jaeger' discussed the solution of Eq. 1 for the case in which the permeability varies as a power of the radial distance. P. Albert3 studied analytically the pseudo steady-state solutions in systems of finite radial extent and non-uniform properties. He also obtained some numerical solutions for nonsteady-state flow using a high-speed computer. William Hurst4 examined the interference pressure drop due to a point sink located in an infinite system consisting of two permeability regions in series. In this case, the permeability changed at a radial distance r from the point sink. INTERFERENCE BETWEEN OIL FIELDS IN A NON-UNIFORM AQUIFER The interference pressure drop for oil fields located in an extensive aquifer of uniform properties is discussed in a number of places in the literature. This work considers the interference pressure drop for oil fields located in a non-uniform extensive aquifer comprising two regions of different properties as shown in Fig. 1. Region I of the aquifer extends from which is the radius of Oil Field A, to ar,,, where a>1. It has permeability k,, porosity +, and effective compressibility c,. Oil Field B is located in Region II which extends from ar, to infinity and has different properties from those of Region I, but the same formation thickness h. Region II has permeability k2, porosity and effective compressibility c2. The choice of this type of aquifer should not imply that it is of frequent occurrence. It is chosen primarily to illustrate the effects of non-uniform aquifer properties on oilfield interference. It is of interest to point out that a non-uniform radial aquifer in which both the permeability and the porosity are inversely proportional to the radial distance can be treated in a manner similar to a linear aquifer of uniform properties. The situation where only the permeability varies as the inverse of the radial distance is also amenable to analytical treatment. Both aquifers behave quite differently from a radial aquifer with uniform properties so far as the water influx and the interference pressure drop are concerned. METHOD OF SOLUTION The expression for the interference pressure drop in Oil Field B due to a constant rate of water influx in Oil Field A is developed in the Appendix. Falconbridge Ltd Raglan Mine has been in production since 1998 and has produced annually some 900 000T of ore grading 3.1% nickel, 0.9% copper and 0.06% cobalt. The mine is located in Nunavik, Northern Quebec. The current mine life is estimated at approximately 20 years. Reserves are composed of numerous small ore bodies situated across a 65 km strike length. Planning the extraction of the ten small mineralized zones represents a great challenge to optimize. The overall objective is to maximize the company?s return on net assets. Actual planning uses computerized technology tools like Automod and Mine2-4D, and a conventional discounted cash flow method (DCF) of calculating net present value (NPV). The complex setting of Raglan could benefit from advance valuation techniques such as the real options method (RO). This paper will present the characteristics if the mines that make it a good candidate to use RO to gain further insight.

Metal market prices rose drastically in 2006, and most broke historical records as shown in Figs. 1-4. This increase has been basically driven by economic growth in Asian countries, especially China. The growth trend is expected to continue for several years. Then, India will follow the same growth trend. Their metal demands keep the price levels high for 20 years or more. One more additional important factor on the metal market prices is hedge funds come into the market. Japan imports all metals for domestic use from overseas. The amounts imported were 1.27 million tons in copper, 0.32 million tons in lead, 0.59 million tons in zinc, 0.20 million tons in nickel, and 1.18 million tons in manganese, respectively in 2006 (Source: http://www.jogmec.go.jp/j_resourse/index.html#03). Though mainly we import the concentrates and our domestic customer smelters take the part of metallurgical leaching, the payment necessary for purchasing the concentrates is estimated about US$ 10 billions in 2006. The payments in 2005 and in 2003 were about a half and a quarter of the 2006, respectively. Japan must have effective counter measures to reduce the future payments.

The endlessly changing pattern of mineral supply and demand offers opportunity to the alert and can bring disaster to the unwary. The discovery of ore bodies, the invention of extractive processes, the provision of new transport facilities, the political stabilization of underdeveloped areas, and many other changes can increase supply dramatically. Such new outpourings of mineral wealth from ore bodies bring fortunes to their developers, and consumers frequently find their competitive positions decidedly improved by new and cheap sources of supply. On the other hand, operators of marginal properties can find competition from newly opened high-grade mines intolerable. Consumers that have depended on the products of nearby, high-cost mines may find new, remote, low-cost supplies advantageous only to their competitors. The invention of new prospecting methods can have spectacular effects. Shortly after World War I the discovery rate of petroleum pools began to decline. The leading prospecting technique of that day, the projection downward of surface reflections of geologic structure, was proving less rewarding. Prophets foretold an oil shortage in the near future. But at that very moment scientists were perfecting the application of seismic waves to reveal underground oil-bearing geologic structures. As these geophysical methods were put into commercial use the whole outlook changed-the problem of the 1930's became how to cope with the surplus from discovery, not how to meet the ever rising demand. Many lead mines were being abandoned as unprofitable about this same time because the penalties charged by smelters for the zinc in the ores and concentrates more than counterbalanced the payments for lead and silver. Ground, air, and water vehicles can expose humans to substantial multi-axis vibration. Multiple input/multiple output relationships or models exist for estimating frequency response functions of linear systems1, 2. These relationships have been applied by some investigators to evaluate the effects of occupied seat vibration3, 4. Using a multiple input/single output model, this study investigated the effects of single- and combined-axis vibration in the fore-and-aft (X), lateral (Y), and vertical (Z) directions on vibration transmission to the human chest. Frequency response functions (transmissibilities) were estimated and compared for the back-on and back-off postures. Methods A rigid seat with seat back was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). A flat acceleration vibration signal was generated between 2 and 40 Hz at 1.0 ms-2 rms in the single and combined X, Y, Z, XY, XZ, YZ, and XYZ axes. The signals were shifted in time so that the combined inputs were not fully correlated. Lightweight triaxial accelerometers were used to measure accelerations at the seat base (input) and at the bony manubrium of the chest (output). The maximum of nine frequency response functions (H(?)) or transmissibilities were estimated from the auto- and cross-spectra. The system transfer matrix for the XYZ inputs and chest Z output is [ ] where PxZ, PyZ, and PzZ are the cross-spectra between the three inputs at the seat base and the Z output at the chest, respectively, and Pxx, Pxy,…zz are the auto- and cross-spectra between the input signals (? not shown in Eq. 1). Equation 1 can be similarly written for the chest X and Y outputs. Matlab® was used to estimate the auto- and cross-spectral densities for calculating the transmissibilities, ordinary coherences (for single inputs), partial coherences, and multiple coherences. Results Figure 1 illustrates the major chest transmissibilities observed for the two postures. Vertical vibration showed a consistent influence on the chest X response (Chest X/Z), most likely causing chest pitch. Some chest Z responses were observed with X-axis inputs, but the results were variable and difficult to interpret.
