Mine Terex articulated dump trucks are working on a large restoration project of an abandoned open cast coal site in Blacklaw, central Scotland. The project is part of the construction of a 42-turbine wind farm complex. During the scheduled 18-month duration of the project, three 28-t(31-st) Generation 7 TA30 dump trucks and the six 36.5-t (40-st) TA40articulated trucks are estimated to move about 1Mm3 (1.3 million cu yd)of material. The trucks are working12-hour shifts, 5.5days a week.

The objectives of this investigation were to determine the strain propagation laws for a strain pulse in salt and to compare the seismic effects from the detonation of different explosives in salt. The investigation showed that a strain propagation law of the type, e = K(R/W 1/3 ) n, and a strain energy propagation law of the type, Ea/W 1/3 = K(R/WI/3)b , are valid in salt. A change in the regression law coefficient, n , was noted with strain level. A similar change in b was inferred because strain energy is proportional to the square of strain amplitude. Particle velocity data may be used interchangeably with strain data under the test conditions.

In 2005, a total of 263 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.0% (n=121) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=32; 12.2%), copper ore (n=31; 11.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n=16; 6.1%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=52; 19.8%), followed by Alaska (n=27; 10.3%).

The paper summarises the results of a recent study of minerals planning policies of the Member States of the EU. The study has shown that contrary to the public opinion the production of industrial minerals and construction minerals is significant the former accounting for about 20 percent of global production, the latter amounting to about 3 billion tonnes per annum. In contrast the importance of metal ores has diminished although metal production in some European countries can still be significant. The study revealed that very few Member States have clearly defined mineral policies. Common to most mineral policies is the emphasis on reducing minerals consumption and recycling whereas the important aspect protecting access to minerals resources is not adequately addressed by most policies. Access to mineral deposits is regulated in most Member States by land use legislation and administration. Information on mineral deposits in land use planning data bases tends to be scarce. This together with the absence of formal mineral policies places minerals at a disadvantage in land use decision making. The emergence in the recent past of environmental legislation and in particular environmental impact assessments has had a crucial effect on the duration of the authorization process for new mineral projects. Examples are given how minerals planning is handled in some of the Member States.

Experimental petrology may be used to accurately constrain PTX conditions in order to calibrate and understand geologic processes. This method may be used to answer postulated questions, by recreating known geologic conditions and observing changes in the experimental charges. The purpose of this project was to determine the eutectic composition and temperature in the ternary system PbS-FeS-ZnS ¦ (Ag2S), at ambient and elevated pressures and elucidate if the sulfides of the Broken Hill orebody may have been partially molten during highgrade (granulite facies) metamorphism. The study determined the eutectic temperature and composition in the system PbS-FeS-ZnS to be 800¦2¦C and 62.5% PbS, 30.5%FeS, 7% ZnS respectively, at one atmosphere, and the eutectic temperature at 27 kbars was found to be 960¦C¦10¦C, with a eutectic composition enriched in ZnS relative to the one atmosphere eutectic. the addition of lwt.% Ag2S to the system depresses the eutectic temperature to 772¦2¦C at 1 atmosphere and below 810¦5¦C at 5 kbars. The conditions of peak metamotphism for the cental and southern areas of the Broken Hill Block, New South Wales, Australia , lie above the solidus of the PbS-FeS-ZnS-Ag2S system, strongly suggesting that partial melting occurred in the orebody.

Sustainable development is one of the central themes of the work of the World Health Organization; chemical safety is one of its important components. For more than 25 years, WHO has had specialized units for assisting member countries in dealing with their problems in chemical safety. For one of the units involved, International Programme on Chemical Safety, a reorientation is in progress to make best use of existing resources, and to prioritise the work to optimally correspond to the needs of the member countries. The risk assessment work of IPCS, and specifically, the work on chromium and chromium compounds, are discussed.

After measuring the kinetics of Ni reduction from a SiO2-saturated fayalite slag into a Cu-based metallic phase on a laboratory scale, a general model was developed that is capable of simulating mass transfer to and from metal-slag, slag-gas and metal-gas interfaces for multiple species. The model was used to simulate the reactions that occur when Cu and Ni are reduced from fayalite-based slags into a Cu-based metallic phase. Good agreement was achieved between model predictions and experimental data

Por ello, se planteó la modificación del diseño Final del Tajo Chaquicocha, ya que la continuidad de estos malos resultados arriesgaba el minado de los Bancos inferiores. En ese sentido, el objetivo del presente texto estriba en lograr voladuras masivas, sin afectar la estabilidad de las paredes del Tajo Chaquicocha, así como tener beneficios económicos en la reducción de tiempo de minado por cada banco, y en la productividad (Dig Rate) de los equipos de carguío.

This report contains the practical application of a computer program for the simulation of ventilation systems under the influence of mine fires and other emergencies on five hardrock mines. The introduction describes the need for such a program, its basic features, and the range of its applicability which is mainly a function of the available ventilation data. The second chapter discusses program modifications, whose necessity or desirability was, during the application, discovered. The following five chapters, which comprise the major portion of the report, give the detailed description of the program application on the five mines. For every one of the selected mines, the ventilation system, the source of the used ventilation data and their preparation for computer simulations are outlined. Based on data for the airflow distribution solely, fumes concentrations in the mines are calculated for several assumed fire locations. Based on data for airflow and pressure distributions, ventilation disturbances caused by fires as well as the resulting fumes concentrations and temperatures are determined. The consequences for escape routes and the possible means to keep them free of fumes are discussed. To investigate the capabilities of the program, other contaminant sources and other potentially dangerous ventilation factors, like fan failures and changed surface temperatures, are simulated also. The results of the calculations have been entered into ventilation plans which makes them easier to scrutinize. All significant computer printouts have been attached.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo a síntese de materiais híbridos nanoestruturados à partir da funcionalização do argilomineral haloisita com (3-aminopropil)trietoxissilano (APTES) para aplicação em processos de adsorção. A rota de modificação baseou-se na acidificação e posterior reação química entre as hidroxilas superficiais da haloisita e os grupos hidrolisáveis de APTES na presença de tolueno sob refluxo. Haloisita em sua forma natural e modificada foi caracterizada por análise termogravimétrica (TG), área superficial específica (BET), espectroscopia de infravermelho (FTIR) e difração de raios X (DRX). A quantidade de APTES enxertado, calculado através da análise termogravimétrica foi de 7,32% para a amostra funcionalizada previamente acidificada e 6,50% para a amostra funcionalizada sem pré tratamento ácido. A área superficial das amostras diminuiu com a funcionalização. As amostras funcionalizadas exibiram novas bandas características de grupos de APTES no espectro obtido por FTIR confirmando a ocorrência da funcionalização do organosilano na haloisita. A análise de DRX indicou que a estrutura original não foi alterada após a funcionalização.

International regulations exist to manage the concentrations of mycotoxins such as Ochratoxin A (OTA) and deoxynivalenol (DON) in grains and prevent health risks from excessive exposure to OTA and DON. Since the permitted levels of these mycotoxins are very low (existing maximum levels are in the range of 5 ppb for OTA and 1–2 ppm for DON), sampling for these mycotoxins is potentially challenging. Given that the distribution of infected kernels in a consignment of wheat can be highly heterogeneous, detection by current sampling methods is subject to a high variance. Furthermore, the concentrations of mycotoxins in individual kernels vary over orders of magnitude, intensifying the heterogeneity of the bulk grain.In these circumstances, there is much interest in developing sampling plans that inform regulatory agencies, and mitigate the risk of misclassifying grain shipments as compliant or non-compliant within the global grain trade, when correctly implemented.Experimental data from laboratory and field studies describing individual wheat kernel concentrations of OTA and DON were combined with experimental data describing the variance due to the analytical methods used for OTA and DON to calculate the sampling distribution for wheat having various levels of contamination. This work has focused on quantifying the heterogeneity of samples at the point of submission for analysis and within subsequent sample preparation to arrive at total sampling distributions that include uncertainties due to the intrinsic heterogeneity and the analytical uncertainties. Keywords: Pyrochemistry, Salts Treatment, Distillation The pyrochemical purification of metal generates spent salts. When this metal is an actinide such as plutonium, the slags cannot be discarded and are thus disposed in nuclear facility. In order to handle with these slags, the decision has been taken to reduce stored quantities. The development of a pyrochemical treatment is in progress in the CEA Valduc centre. The feed salt, typically composed of various Pu and Am species contained into monovalent or divalent chloride matrix, is first oxidized to convert the actinides into oxides. Then the chlorides are separated from the actinide oxides by vacuum distillation. Temperatures higher than 750°C for monochloride salts mixture NaCl/KCl and higher than 1100°C for divalent CaCl2 base salts, are required to produce an industrial flow of vaporization. Inactive qualification of the process for NaCl/KCl base salt has been carried out with lanthanide surrogates. Then, a pilot equipment, called distillator has been designed and built for production-scale distillation of NaCl/KCl and CaCl2 oxidized plutonium salts. Industrial flows of vaporization have been obtained with this pilot equipment : about 4 g/cm²/h for NaCl/KCl at 800?900°C and 1 Pa, and more than 1,5 g/cm²/h for CaCl2 base salts between 1000?1200°C at 0.1 Pa. The last step, now in progress, is the integration of the distillator into a glove box.

As part of a $2.2 Billion bridge project that will link Indiana and Kentucky, an interchange project northeast of Louisville will require the mining of a 6-lane tunnel system about 2,000 ft long in order to cross beneath the historic Drumanard Estate. This paper will discuss preliminary engineering that has been undertaken to compare two-bore and three-bore layouts, the planning of an exploratory tunnel facility, and the potential for including a test chamber to investigate the ability of high capacity roadheaders to mine the 22,000 psi limestones.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a respirable dust survey to evaluate the effectiveness of a water curtain utilized for dust control on continuous miner sections. The purpose of this survey was to determine if the water curtain was effective in reducing respirable dust concentrations, since several mines currently use water curtains to control miners? respirable dust exposures. The survey was conducted on a supersection of an underground coal mine, which utilized two continuous miners on the same split of air. Each continuous miner alternated taking a cut so that both continuous miners would not operate at the same time. The underground coal mine is located in Knox County, Indiana. The water curtain evaluated in this survey was located in the last open crosscut between the intake side continuous miner and the return side continuous miner. When the intake side continuous miner cuts coal, its exhaust air would be used to ventilate the return side of the section. The intent of the water curtain was to reduce the intake air respirable dust concentration (generated by the intake side continuous miner) before the air stream ventilated the return side of the section. To determine the effectiveness of the water curtain in reducing respirable dust concentrations, respirable dust sampling pumps were placed on both the intake side and the return side of the water curtain. Additional respirable dust sampling pumps were placed farther downstream from the water curtain to monitor dust levels downstream of the water curtain, but in an area where respirable dust would not be created by anything other than the intake side continuous miner or additional section air. The water curtain and the respirable dust sampling pumps were operated only when the intake side continuous miner was cutting coal. The samples were analyzed for respirable dust and quartz content. The water curtain showed minimal effect in controlling respirable dust and respirable quartz dust, but the reduction was so negligible that this survey could not quantify the reduction. The measured reductions are within the accuracy of the sampling equipment.

Gravel lithology affects the quality of aggregate because different rock types in gravel have different physical and chemical properties. The lithologic composition of alluvial gravel reflects the composition of its source terrane and the variable effects of weathering and transport on each rock type. This report discusses lithologic controls on aggregate quality in the mountain-front environment of the Colorado Front Range. Lithologic controls on aggregate quality of gravels were evaluated using pebble count data. Gravel lithology along the Front Range shows both temporal and regional variation. The principal variable in gravel lithology is quartz plus quartzite, of which quartzite is commonly more abundant. Large quantities of metaquartzite derived from the mountain front southwest of Boulder, Colo., were dispersed northeastward during deposition of the oldest Front Range gravels. Average quartz plus quartzite is greatest in the oldest gravels. Aggregate quality is probably enhanced by large quantities of quartzite. Abundant volcanic rocks in gravel may enhance aggregate quantity, but such occurrences are local in extent. Abundant sedimentary rocks in gravel, mainly sandstone near the mountain front, may decrease aggregate quality.

The distribution of copper between liquid silver and liquid iron, Fe-C, and Fe-C-Si alloys was studied at 1600°C. From the data and the activity of copper in silver obtained from the phase diagrams, the activity coefficients of copper in iron up to 3 atomic pct are log y, = 0.90 — 2.4 N, and y": = 8.0. The effect of carbon up to saturation is expressed as log y = 1.8 Ni. The effect of silicon up to 11 atomic pct is insignificant. SLOWLY rising copper content of steel being produced is focusing attention on the lack of information on the behavior of copper in liquid steel. Chou' measured the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron through its distribution between liquid silver and iron. He obtained a value of 9.12 at infinite dilution. Chipman' calculated the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron at 1600°C from the phase diagram and obtained a value of 12. Ameiln and Pfeiffer- investigated the possibility of removing copper from liquid steel through the use of lead, silver, and bismuth as solvents. They also calculated that the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron would be increased five or sixfold by addition of 4 pct C. Langenberg and Lindsay' are investigating the effectiveness of lead and sodium sulfide in removing copper from liquid iron. The experimental method was similar to that used by Chou' and Chipman and Floridis." Silver, copper, and iron were melted together, the copper distributing itself between the two layers so that at equilibrium a,.,, (in Ag) - a,.,, (inFe) and N,.,, (in Ag) yc,, (inFe) (in Ag). [21 N,.,, (inFe) Thus, from the concentration of copper in each layer and the activity coefficient of copper in liquid silver, the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron can be calculated. The effect of an alloying element such as carbon on the activity coefficient of copper can also be determined from its effect on the distribution, provided the new element is essentially insoluble in silver. The one serious limitation of this method is the increasing mutual solubility of silver and iron in the presence of a third component. The mutual solubilities of pure iron and silver are negligible, but increase with increasing copper concentration beyond the range investigated. Ag-Cu System—The activity coefficient of copper in silver at 1600°C had to be estimated, since direct experimental data are not available. Kawakami" measured the heat of mixing of Ag-Cu alloys at 1200°C by a calorimetric technique. Scheil' calculated the heat of mixing in this system by use of the phase diagram, assuming that the solution is random and that the heat of mixing is independent of temperature. Gravity methods of recovering alluvial gold are not very efficient at particle sizes below about 0.l mm. Whereas such gold may not have been economic to recover in the past, the same may not be true today. Centrifugal concentrators, like the Knudsen and Knelson bowls, are showing promise after an inauspicious start, at least in New Zealand. The large proportion of heavy mineral in many auriferous beach sands and the natural hydrophobicity of fine gold should make flotation an attractive contender for its recovery. The conventional mechanical flotation cell is effective, but roughing, scavenging and cleaning are necessary to achieve both high recovery and low mass Yield. More problematic is the difficulty of maintaining coarse and dense sands in suspension. The air sparged hydrocyclone is effective at recovering fine gold from a fine Colarado River sand, but is not effective for the coarse and dense beach sands of New Zealand. The flotation column shows much promise for these sands, when recoveries of over 80 per cent and mass yields of less than one per cent can be achieved in a single pass. The froth separator of the USSR and flash flotation could also be worthy contenders. It is felt that flotation could be limited to naturally and artificially de-slimed concentrates.

The Hauraki goldfield is located east of Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand. It includes Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges as far south as the town of Te Aroha and south east to Te Puke. It has a total north-south extent of about 180 km and an area of 3000 km2. The goldfield is the most productive in New Zealand, and while production at present is negligible, the area has undergone continuous exploration over the last seven years.

"By any measure of common practice, Claude Resources' Seabee Gold Mine in Northern Saskatchewan should not now be operating. Not because reserves dwindled, or grade dropped or prices weakened or technical problems arose, but because a host of unimaginable other problems beset the project, any one of which would normally have led to the mine's failure.The success of the Seabee Mine, and it is extremely successful, is a story of the vision and blunt determination of two men. Neither is remarkable in his own right but each possesses the characteristics which were necessary to forge a highly productive and profitable narrow-vein mine in the midst of the most bizarre and unpredictable events which likely have ever beset a mine start-up in Canadian history.Together, Bill MacNeill, a Saskatchewan born, former bush pilot and Ray Gagnon, a big hearted, hard-fisted, miner with 44 years of experience in Canada's underground, built the Seabee Mine.They didn't accomplish this with brilliant geology, outstanding engineering or nimble corporate manouvering but rather a stubbornness and raw common sense which likely are all too often, ingredients missing in failed projects.The Seabee Mine is 100% owned by Claude Resources, a Saskatoon based company taken over by Bill MacNeill, its current chairman, in 1982. The company is listed on the TSE and produces 1200 barrels of oil per day and about 60,000 oz of gold per year. The company has a strong balance sheet, is very profitable and has 18 million shares outstanding.The Seabee property in Northern Saskatchewan started out like many other gold exploration properties in Canada.It was discovered in the l 940's by what is now Cominco, and, while highly regarded by that company the property sat largely dormant until acquired by Claude Resources in 1985.Claude did what most junior exploration companies would do and went looking for a company with a depth of expertise to joint venture the property.That company was Placer Development who could earn a 55% interest in the Seabee by delivering a bankable feasibility study on the Project by July 1988 and providing financing to production.Placer Development was an excellent company and spent over $8 million dollars on the Seabee over a 3 year period. Unfortunately for Claude Resources, Placer Development merged with Dorne Mines in 1987 and the new merged company, Placer Dome, established a minimum production threshold greater than the 50,000 oz per year which the Seabee appeared capable of supporting at that time. Placer Dome's request for an indefinite extension of the joint venture agreement to allow it to drill off a larger ore body was rejected by Claude Resources and the Seabee Property was returned to Claude in 1988."

"Generally speaking, the most intensive efforts at dust control in the mining industry have, in the past, been concerned with underground operations and where uranium ore or high silica material is processed. In the past several years, Stoop Rock has made Intensive efforts to reduce dust levels in it's Iron ore pelletizing complex. There have been no great engineering break-throughs with regard to dust control in such plants, and certainly no new engineering techniques have had to be applied at Steep Rock. This paper deals with how significant improvements in dust levels have been achieved through minor modification to dust collectors and ventilation units, improvements in operating practices, and education of supervisors and hourly personnel.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONSteep Rock Iron Mines is located 120 miles west of Thunder Bay near Atikokan. (fig. 1) Run-of-mine ore is pelletized along with some -1"" concentrate that has been processed in the concentrator (a summer operation only), which utilizes gravity separation to upgrade a mechanical mixture of ore and waste."
