El presente texto describe un nuevo método para el tratamiento de concentrados de cobre con alto contenido de arsénico utilizando el carbón activado como catalizador. Para ello, se realizaron pruebas de lixiviación con concentrados de enargita de tres minas de Chile, Perú y Estados Unidos, donde los resultados señalaron que la disolución de la enargita fue más rápido con la influencia del carbón en la solución lixiviante, incluso después de haber reciclado el carbón.

Wet desulfurization of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal and Illinois No. 6 coal were conducted with sodium hypochlorite in the laboratory. Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was leached by hypochlorite at high pHs in one step only. The hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.6 molar; sodium hydroxide concentration, from 0.2 to 0.8 molar; and temperature was at the levels of 80 and 90°C. The desulfurization of Illinois No. 6 coal was conducted in three consecutive steps of pretreatment in concentrated ammonia at room temperature, leaching with hypochlorite at room temperature and hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide solution at 90°C. In the leaching step, hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.8 molar. The desulfurization method of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was found to reduce mainly pyritic sulfur. More than 70% of pyritic sulfur removal was achieved at the optimum conditions of 0.4 molar hypochlorite, 0.4 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The desulfurization method for Illinois No. 6 coal was capable of reducing significant amounts of organic sulfur. The removal of organic sulfur achieved a 37.8% reduction at the optimum operation of leaching at 0.4 molar hypochlorite and room temperature followed by hydrolysis at 0.3 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The chlorine content in the coal produced by the chlorination during leaching was kept below the threshold value of 0.3% at the optimum conditions of the desulfurization method for each coal.

"A reliable supply of non-energy raw materials is a precondition for the functioning of the European economy. In line with its importance, the issue of raw materials supply has become more prominent in the past years, especially owing to turbulent raw material markets. However, these turbulences are not due to depletion of the geological resources but to a missmatch of (expected) supply and (expected) demand, with several interacting factors influencing the markets both from the supply as well as from the demand side. A recent evaluation, published in June 2010 within the framework of the EU Raw Materials Initiative, sought to bring together these two sides of raw material markets and asked the question "which raw materials are critical for the EU?" Herein we present the methodology used by the Ad-hoc Working Group on Defining Critical Raw Materials and the results obtained, complemented by results from the study "Raw Materials for Emerging Technologies"."

Organic materials utilized as cable Jacketing, cable insulation, standoffs, insulating boards and potting compositions were identified and d literature survey performed to obtain the required thermal oxidative and moist tracking data. Thirty representative compositions were procured and subjected to thermal and moist tracking evaluations. Tracking was found to invariably result in ignition or glow of the test specimen. Influence of parameters such as electrolyte strength and composition, temperature, conductor spacing, and electrode material were investigated. Volatile s produced by selected insulators on thermal oxidative and electrical stress were identified, quantitated, and their potential impairment action upon a current interrupter assessed.

Chalcopyrite concentrate was flash-oxidised in a laminar-flow furnace in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres that ranged in composition from N2 to N2 + 50 vol% O2. Gas pre-heating temperatures were 500-1100 degrees C and four particle-size fractions were studied: 28-38, 38-44, 44-62 and 62-74 micrometres. The effect of the residence time of the particles on sulphur removal was studied in the range 0.1-0.35 s. Scanning-electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive analysis and back-scattered electron analysis was used to determine the morphology and mineralogy of the reacted particles. Total desulphurisation was achieved under the most oxidising conditions. Particles were observed to undergo fragmentation during oxidation, the violence of this depending on the iron and sulphur contents and the original particle-size fraction. The melting and/or reaction stages of the particles under different conditions were studied in powder samples. Due to highly competitive international coal markets, Stockton mine is bound to produce very high quality coals consistently if it is to maintain and expand its market share. The nature of the deposit is such that coals from various source pits are blended in differing proportions to meet the various coal quality specifications of the customer. The complexity arises due to quality variation within the seam both horizontally and vertically and the fact that up to six different products with completely different quality specifications may have to be produced. With increasing demand for this rare product and with CoalCorp eager to meet this demand comes the requirement for computer methods to handle this highly complex problem of both modelling and scheduling.

DETA exhibits a highly selective depressant action on pyrrhotite without adversely affecting the collectorless flotability of pentlandite and chalcopyrite in nickel-copper ores of the Sudbury region. A simplified Eh-pH diagram has been constructed to illustrate the extended stability of elemental sulphur and to explain the collectorless flotation of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Cu and Ni ions, which are known to exist on the surface of pyrrhotite, promote the flotation of this mineral whether a collector is present or not. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the action of DETA involves the sequestration of Cu and Ni ions from surfaces under a wide range of redox conditions; analysis of flotation test filtrate indicates as much as a 20-fold increase in the concentration of Ni and Cu ions. It appears that DETA may enhance the self-hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite and pentlandite by exposing more of the sulphur-rich surface sites for bubble contact in flotation. The resistance of very dense glacial outwash formations consisting of sand, gravel and cobble formations can be quite high, and techniques for measuring the strength and deformation properties often cause engineers to underestimate the strength of these layers in drilled shaft design. More realistic measurements of this dense formation can be achieved with slotted steel casing pressuremeter tests. To minimize disturbance and achieve accurate measurements, drilling a pilot hole prior to probe insertion is necessary. Characterizing geologic formations that contain significant amounts of gravel and cobbles is challenging because of scale factor. Inserting a standard pressuremeter probe into this formation without damaging the membrane is difficult. This paper presents a case study for the IR-75 project in Dayton, Ohio, USA, where these dense materials were characterized using a slotted casing pressuremeter, optimizing design by providing more realistic properties of these materials.

In November 2009 Mintek installed the FloatStar? advanced flotation stabilization system on Vale&apos;s Cauê iron ore beneficiation plant in Brazil. In September 2010 the system was upgraded to include flotation optimization. The circuit consisted of two parallel cleaner circuits producing final concentrate. The tailings from the cleaner section passed through a scavenger circuit. Large, well-instrumented feed sumps played an important role in circuit stability, presenting a good opportunity for advanced control. Previously the plant was controlled using distributed control system (DCS) level control only. The flotation circuit processes roughly 30kt/day. The FloatStar system provided advanced control of the flotation circuit as well as of the sumps feeding the circuit. The system underwent a lengthy trial to assess the benefit that it provided. Two data sets were analysed, showing performance under advanced stabilization and optimization respectively. Several validation and consistency criteria were employed to ensure the quality of the analysis. Iron recovery and iron tailings grade were used to measure system performance. The analysis showed that the system increased recovery by up to 2.7%. In addition, the system decreased the iron tailings grade by between 1.2% (from 23.5% to 22.3%) and 4.3% (from 31.3% to 27.0%) during different test campaigns. The analysis also showed that the entire FloatStar stabilization system was active for 72.7% of the time from first activation to the end of the first data set (approximately 200 days). From the analysis it was concluded that under similar conditions for &apos;ON&apos; and &apos;OFF&apos; tests, the system provides a clear benefit. It was also found that over the longer term, the system continues to provide a benefit. This finding suggests that the results were not simply due to a short-term advantage. The size of the data set, as well as the magnitude of the recovery improvements, lends considerable confidence to these results. Therefore, it can be concluded that the FloatStar control system provides substantial benefit to operations at this site.

Expansion of the global piling industry has been coupled with significant research efforts investigating the mechanisms controlling pile capacity. Static pile design has transitioned from total stress approaches toward effective stress design, with associated improvements in predicting pile performance. As a result, the available literature is heavily skewed toward static capacity prediction. However, when considering piles offshore, the majority of loading is not static but highly variable and cyclic in nature. This paper outlines the additional factors that require consideration for cyclic pile design, including elevated loading rates, cyclic displacements and capacity degradation. A review of the literature identified a number of cyclic pile testing programs which are collated in this paper. General trends are established through comparison of the tests within the database and the conditions where cyclic loading is most likely to be a concern are identified. In particular, loading conditions which involve full plastic shear reversals are seen to cause the most extreme cyclic damage, with the degraded capacity as low as 31% of the precyclic static capacity. The underlying mechanisms which can result in cyclic damage are explored, with particular attention given to the pore pressure response, radial stresses, shear transfer and particle reorientation.

Bortech’s BoreClad corrosion protection system will be displayed at MINExpo. BoreClad is an innovative system for inside diameter cladding of nozzles, tubes and other circumferential devices. Pressure vessels, mud pumps and other mining equipment must be protected from corrosive caustic chemicals. Usually manufactured from mild steel, they can be clad with a protective material, such as stainless steel, to provide corrosion resistance. However, most welding processes leave voids where corrosion can damage the base metal. BoreClad provides void-free welds by combining gas metal arc welding with automated feed and rotation of chuckable parts. Workpieces of up to 915-mm- (36-in.-) long with a 460-mm- (18-in.-)swing can be clad with stainless steel, Iconel or other exotic metals. Traditionally, the gravity cleaning of coal has been evaluated in pilot plant tests. Attention is now turning to the development of empirical models of gravity cleaning equipment that can be used for the design and evaluation of circuits. This paper presents some preliminary information for spirals and water-only cyclones treating fine coals. Also discussed is how such information gives a better understanding of the operating and performance characteristics of this equipment, how realistic comparisons can be made between different types of equipment, and how small mobile plants could be designed for treating the fine coals &apos;stockpiled&apos; at many NZ mines.

Laboratory test results are presented for the determination of elastic modulus made with the NX borehole jack. Determinations were made in massive pieces of aluminum so as to satisfy conditions of linear elasticity, homogeneity, and isotropy. Results indicate a large discrepancy (approximately 200 percent) betwen material modulus as determined by laboratory block-loading tests and that indicated by the jack under relatively ideal circumstances. Effects due to interface friction, finite block size, incomplete plate-bore contact, and other factors were examined and found not to be significant. Finite element results indicate that assumed loading conditions for the jack differ from those actually occurring, at least in materials of high elastic modulus (approximately 10 million psi), such as quartzite.

To carry out a physicochemical substantiation of a transition to ?soft? modes of reduction of calcine obtained by desulfurizing roasting of nickel concentrate produced as a result of copper-nickel converter matte separation in a nickel anode production circuit, an analysis has been conducted of the macrokinetic behavior of actual calcine samples in the presence of gaseous H2-CO mixtures and solid reductant additives. Within a temperature range of 900°C to 1100°C the main regularities typical of the calcine reduction process with individual gases (H2, CO) also take place when using a gaseous mixture. Under the conditions of low-temperature (900°C to 1000°C) nickel oxide reduction with products of fuel oil conversion in the presence of coke, the role of the latter is insignificant from the technological viewpoint. As a result of the present investigations, we have obtained analytical expressions of macrokinetic parameters of the reaction interaction within the [NiO] calcine-H2-CO-C-CO2-H2O-O2-N2 system.

A 3-year study was conducted to evaluate the problems and benefits of using vegetation to stabilize tailing from a potential Minnesota copper-nickel milling operation. The project consisted of three separate investigations: a waste characterization study, a greenhouse study and a field study. With few exceptions, the physical and chemical characteristics of the tai ling were found to lie within the range of properties of Minnesota soils. The tailing lacks organic matter; is deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; and may contain elevated levels of soluble salts and heavy metals, particularly copper and nickel. Numerous grasses, forbs and woody plants will tolerate the tailing as a rooting medium. Peat incorporation and topsoil dressing provided few benefits to the revegetation process which were not provided by a fertilizer application. With fertilization, grass/legume production in the tailing was comparable to local agricultural yields. Concentration of heavy metals in grasses grown in the tailing were generally below suggested tolerance limits for plants and animal forage. Legumes tended to accumulate higher concentrations of copper and nickel, and metal uptake of most plants was positively correlated with rate of fertilization. Tailing drainage water contained elevated levels of heavy metals, and establishment of vegetation had little effect on the quantity and quality of tailing drainage water. However, topsoil dressing significantly increased drainage water volume when compared to unvegetated control plots. Copper-nickel tailing revegetation recommendations were developed.
