Occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of powered hand tools can result in reductions in tactile sensitivity, grip strength and manual dexterity. In fact, even acute exposures to vibration cause shifts in vibrotactile thresholds in exposed fingers (2,4,5). Although reductions in tactile sensitivity after acute vibration exposures are transient, cellular changes associated with this shift in sensitivity could lead to the more permanent reductions in tactile sensitivity that are a common symptom of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Methods Animals. Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks of age) were used for all experiments. Animals were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guideline for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in a Broome-style restrainer, and securing their tails to the vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control animals were treated in an identical manner except that the tail platform was set on isolation blocks instead of a shaker. Tail temperature and current perception thresholds (CPTs). Rats were exposed to 4 h of tail vibration (125 Hz, 49 m/s2), or restraint. Tail temperature was collected prior to and immediately following the exposure using an infra-red camera. Sensory neuron function was assessed by measuring CPTs with a Neurometer (Neurotron, Baltimore, MD). Transcutaneous nerve stimulation was applied to the C10 region of the tail. Three frequencies were used to test specific fiber types (5 Hz – C, 250 Hz - Ad, and 2000 Hz – Aß). The intensity of the stimulus was automatically increased in small increments until the rat flicked its tail. Tests at each frequency were repeated until the animals displayed 2 responses that were within 2 CPT (or 0.02 mA) of each other (2-4 tests/animal). CPT tests were performed prior to the exposure, immediately following the exposure, and 24 h after the exposure. Data Analyses. Temperatures were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with animal as a random variable. ANCOVAS were used to analyze the CPTs at each frequency. Temperature at the time of the CPT test was used as a covariate, and animal was used as a random variable Results Tail temperatures declined between pre and post exposure (F(1,25) = 62.85, p < 0.001; mean ± sem pre 25.96°C ± 0.42, post 20.71°C ± 0.77), but were back to baseline levels by 24 h after the exposure in both groups of rats. The ANCOVAs demonstrated that exposure to a single bout of vibration did not alter sensitivity of C (5Hz) or Ad (250 Hz) fibers to stimulation.

Major world ilmenite and rutile accumulations reveal similar regional geology and Proterozoic age deeper crustal source rocks. During crustal collision titanium crystallizes as ilmenite and rutile at buried sites of high pressure and temperature rock metamorphism. Hydrothermal activity can convert titanium minerals to rutile, but titanium migration and enrichment seem only local. Many melts crystallize rocks with iron-titanium oxides in solid solution, but titanium enrichment at economic scale takes place in basic intrusive melts often associated with anorthosites and charnokite. Sedimentary placer enrichments have formed since the Proterozoic with water-resistant ilmenite, and rutile segregating by gravity from quartz sands deposited from flowing water. Placers have residual, alluvial, strand and shallow marine variants. Time, organic acids, and sand permeability play lead roles in the leaching of iron from ilmenite during weathering and diagenesis.

The current laboratory methods for assessing the vibration attenuation performance of seats involve repetitive trials with a number of human occupants, and raise certain ethical concerns. Moreover, the measurements with human subjects yield considerable variability in the data. Alternatively, several anthropodynamic manikins have been developed for effective assessments of the coupled seat occupant system [1]. The effectiveness of a manikin in predicting the response of a coupled seat-occupant system lies in its ability to reproduce the biodynamic response of the seated human body in terms of force-motion relationship at the body-seat interface, such as apparent mass (APMS). A number of prototype manikins have thus been developed on the basis of biodynamic characteristics of vertical vibration-exposed seated occupants of different body masses in the vicinity of 5th, 50th and 95th percentile male population. This study concerns with the analysis of a passive prototype manikin to enhance its ability to reproduce the idealized APMS response characteristics of the vibration-exposed seated human subjects defined in ISO-5982[2] for mean body masses of 55, 75 and 98 kg. Methods The APMS responses of a prototype anthropodynamic passive manikin were thoroughly characterized in the laboratory under different excitations and body mass configurations. The manikin was designed with sufficient flexibility to configure mechanical-equivalent models corresponding to seated body masses of 55, 75 and 98 kg, by adding/removing specified masses and springs (Fig. 1). The manikin, configured for a specific body mass, was positioned on a rigid seat without a backrest, which was fixed to the force platform of a whole-body vertical vibration simulator. The simulator was programmed to synthesize random vertical vibration with flat acceleration power spectrum in the 0.4-20 Hz frequency range with two different magnitudes: 1 and 2 m/s2 overall rms acceleration. The total static and dynamic forces of the manikin to and the seat were measured using the force platform, while a single axis accelerometer was installed on the seat pan to measure acceleration due to vertical excitation. With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand &#8596; Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

Grouting is mainly used to improve mechanical properties or decrease the permeability of rock mass around civil and mining projects. The purpose of this paper is to present the most effective factors on grout penetration depth in rock mass. Such factors are essential for reliable estimation of the grout penetration depth and the expense for cement take of any grouting project. In this paper, about 50 different types of the relations presented so far by various researchers to estimate the depth of penetration in fractured rock were studied. The effective factors are classified to rock mass properties, grout properties, and operational factors. Results show that firstly, the discontinuities aperture and Lugeon value are respectively the most investigated factors of rock mass properties influencing on penetration depth. Secondly, the yielding stress, viscosity, and density of grout are the most effective factors of grout properties. Finally, grouting pressure has an intense effect among other operational factors. As part of a comprehensive investigation of tae mechanism of desulfurization of iron and steel by slags, the Blast Furnace Studies Section, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of :lines, in cooperation with the Institute of Technology., University of Minnesota, has made a study of the forms in which sulfur occurs in blast-furnace slag. This report presents data on the three sulfides most important in iron smelting, namely, ferrous sulfide, manganous sulfide, and calcium sulfide. The tendency of these sulfides to form colloids in the molten slag was determined by an examination of quenched samples with an ultramicroscope. Vogt5/ conducted experiments on sulfide silicate melts and examined synthetic blast-furnace slags in a partly crystallized condition. His conclusions were that FeS, CaS, and MnS, or isomorphous compounds, such as (FeXCay)S and (MnxCay)S, were precipitated from the melt, depending on the composition of the slag. In all specimens sulfides were visible and were spherical.

THE PROBLEM Two and a half years have gone by since the December, 1976 Civil Engineering article on subway costs caused such a furore. What has happened in this interval? Even after discounting the crushing inflation rate, costs are still increasing, and there is no sign of a turndown, even in the rate of increase. Some steps outlined in the article have been taken. In April this year, the first D.O.T.-sponsored Peer Review Group, made up of managers of other transit properties, met in Boston to review MBTA&apos;s $500 million Red Line Extension-Northwest for cost effectiveness. While the impact of a review at the end of the design phase, with substantial segments under contract, cannot be as effective as a review early in the design phase, it is nevertheless a start. This first meeting will be followed by a review of Boston&apos;s Orange Line relocation, the final design for which is just underway. In the industry at large two facts are evident: 1. We are failing to reduce underground construction costs. 2. Underground construction is in danger of pricing itself out of the market place. It has always been a greater challenge to design a Chevvy than to design a Cadillac, but it is the Chevvy we need today. Much attention has been focussed in the past on engineering design in the narrow sense: areas such as ground loading conditions and concrete design. Standing crib supports have been applied in underground mining programs to resist large roof movements and sustain high-loads. The strength and deformation capability of these systems has been documented under both laboratory and field conditions. The parameter that has not been examined and is not well understood is the effect that a crib or other types of standing support has on the primary and secondary bolting systems. A crib support system with low system stiffness may allow large amounts of closure and deformation and cause the bolting systems to yield or even fail. Conversely, cribs or standing support that are too stiff may experience brittle or buckling failures, negating the advantage of the intrinsic supports previously installed. Utilizing a combination of field measurements and 3-dimensional finite element modeling techniques, the relationship between system stiffness and the subsequent performance of the installed bolting system is evaluated. Additionally, a simple method for calculating the combined system stiffness for standing supports, when using materials with different strengths such as steel, concrete, wood, etc., is presented.

This case study details the process that was used for project planning and permitting for the Greens Creek Mine, located near Juneau Alaska, as seen through the eyes of one of the primary environmental consultants. This case shows how a Company could involve the public and the agencies in the early 1980&apos;s and develop a project sensitive to concerns expressed with a high level of environmental protection. Comparisons are made to the current environmental permitting situation. Initial baseline studies performed during the exploration phase provided helpful information for more detailed environmental work in 1980-1981 as planning and permitting formally got underway. Since the mine was in a National Monument and abuts up to a designated wilderness, the Monument Manager administered the project for the lead agency, the USDA Forest Service. Planning and permitting progressed smoothly to a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) in 1983. Metal prices were depressed when the FEIS was completed and the project permitting proceeded slowly. Ownership changed several times in the mid-1980&apos;s. New owners re-evaluated the project and suggested five changes that required a supplemental EA prior to development. The project was fully permitted and started construction in 1988. Operation began in 1989. Today the environmental process in southeast Alaska is now much more complex, detailed, expensive, and time consuming than in the early 1980&apos;s. Significant issues discussed that may impede development and operation include overlapping agency jurisdictions, personal agendas of agency staff, conflicts between agencies that impede project progress, changing regulations, and a well organized environmental opposition.

This paper is a discussion of the causes of deflagration in cast blasting and a description of a project intended to demonstrate how changes in six critical parameters contribute to the deflagration chemical reaction. Control of these parameters is key to solving the nitrogen dioxide “orange smoke” problem. Preliminary results of an investigation into the development of a technology addressing the problem of atmospheric releases of nitrogen dioxide during cast blasting in surface mine operations are described. The project is funded by a $600,000 Small Business Innovative Research grant from the National Science Foundation and an $80,000 Abandoned Coal Mine Land Reclamation Program grant from the state of Wyoming. The presentation will address the measures required to control the blast chemical reaction so that it does not produce nitrogen dioxide through deflagration. Experimental blast data will be focused on a new shaped charge detonation system designed to instantaneously bring the powder column to maximum velocity of detonation (VOD), thus insuring efficient detonation of the entire colulnn.

IN a previous study of hypereutectoid Ti-Ni alloys&apos; a substructure was observed in quenched powder specimens when the constitution was 100 pet retained ß body-centered-cubic phase. The alloy powders were quenched from 1000°C by a blast of helium gas and precautions already described were observed throughout the work, to minimize contamination. Ogden et al.2 have previously observed subboundaries in the ß phase of a Ti-Mn-N alloy; but this structure was attributed to nitrogen-rich a precipitation. The nitrogen content of the Ti-Ni alloys does not exceed 0.02 pet and the quenching rate was sufficiently rapid to suppress precipitation reactions. Since X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the absence of any second phase which might account for this phenomenon, it seems unlikely that this substructure is explicable in terms of nitrogen content. Fig. 1 shows the substructure in adjacent grains of 100 pet ß phase in a quenched 6 atomic pet Ni alloy. Fig. 2 shows adjacent ß grains in a similarly treated alloy; one grain contains marked intracrys-talline boundaries and the other is completely free from any substructure. The suberystals appear to have fairly regular shapes, suggesting a regular orientation relationship among them. Tempering the retained ß structure at temperatures below the eutectoid eliminates the substructure at an early stage of ß decomposition. At the present time it is possible only to guess at an explanation for this subboundary phenomenon, since very little work has been reported on substructures resulting from phase changes. The U.S Bureau of Mines conducted a five-year mineral resource assessment of the 16.6 million acre Colville Mining District in northern Alaska, which includes part of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. The study was initiated at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, which administers the majority of the region. The study was done in cooperation with the Alaskan Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, the U. S. Geological Survey, and the University of Alaska. During fieldwork, 1593 rock, soil, and stream sediment samples were collected and four bulk samples taken for beneficiation studies. A total of 40 mineral occurrences were documented, including 27 which were previously undescribed. No mining has occurred within the district. Mississippian carbonaceous shale and siliceous mudstone contain stratiform exhalative lead-zinc-silver occurrences. Grades average 8.0% combined lead/zinc and 51 gm/mt silver. Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian sandstones host breccia veins, containing up to 29% combined lead/zinc and 274 gm/mt silver. Mineralized quartzites of similar age have potential for disseminated-type lead-zinc deposits. Samples from Lower Cretaceous mudstone and shale beds up to 6.5 meters thick, contain as much up to 12% manganese. Upper Mississippian carbonaceous shale and limestone beds contain up to 23% phosphate. Stratiform barite deposits hosted by cherts, are up to 27 meters thick with an average specific gravity of 4.16. Vein-type fluorite occurrences are associated with Mississippian limestone. Moderate potential exists for development of zinc -lead-silver, barite, and phosphate deposits.

Most epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are hosted in late Miocene andesites. Broken Hills is an exception, being one of the few economic deposits hosted in rhyolite. Investigation of Broken Hills provides the opportunity to collate structural data that may be compared with that collected from andesite-hosted deposits in order to evaluate the importance of rock type on vein development. The rhyolite host rock at Broken Hills is strongly flow-banded, but this anisotropy does not appear to affect the orientation of mineralised structures. There is a range of structures at Broken Hills: veins, faults, fractures, and large breccia pipes. Veins generally strike north-south, with localised changes in strike and thickness. Slip vectors determined from striations indicate near pure dipslip on the main lode, indicating an extensional tectonic setting. The orientations of vein deflections are parallel to slip vectors. This correlation is common in modern extensional fault arrays where fault growth and linkage produces subvertical deflections in fault orientation (eg TVZ). There are three main types of breccias: 1. Primary breccias related to rhyolite emplacement. 2. Jigsaw type secondary breccias that are that developed during the life of the hydrothermal system. 3. Breccia pipes. Broken Hills was a dynamic epithermal mineralising system.

The first part of this article is a review of industry techniques and styles during the past 50 years. It is followed by my career history during the same period. The second part covers my ideas about what works in mineral exploration. These include estimates about discovery costs, thoughts about education of explorationists, organization of exploration groups and my opinions about the relative value of exploration techniques. Evolution of exploration techniques [Table 1] shows the evolution of mineral exploration techniques and styles from 1950 to 2000. During the first half of that period, there was a progressive increase in exploration drilling. During the second half, there was a decrease in prospecting and an increase in high technology, indirect exploration and a rapid increase in discovery cost.

A mine fire is one of the most challenging safety issues facing a mine operator and can occur at any location underground. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Twentymile Coal Mine, Colorado, conducted in-mine experiments to determine the capability of high-expansion foam for addressing underground fires. The tests were conducted in sloping entries with high-capacity diesel-powered foam generators. The following results were observed: a well-designed, maintained, and properly operated high-expansion foam generator can propagate a foam plug hundreds of feet in steep upward sloping (20 pct) multiple entries against a ventilation pressure; stoppings and partitions designed to contain the foam plug in upward sloping entries must be substantially constructed; and the predicted quantity of foam concentrate can be significantly less than the actual amount used due to foam losses, such as bubble breakage on dry surfaces. This paper describes the production of high-expansion firefighting foam and discusses the in-mine experimental tests and results. his paper describes a study of an altered mining extraction and the resulting Rockmass response at VALE?s Creighton Mine. Typically, the deep mining zones have strict stope extraction guidelines to ensure safety and productivity; however, these guidelines offer low flexibility or few options for stope sequencing. The 402 O. B. being in a good rock mass, at moderate depth and stress regime at Creighton, offered an opportunity to drive a more flexible mining sequence with stopes and a pillar. A three-phased approach was used to mitigate risk of the mining plan: 1- Numerical modelling to fully anticipate rock mass response to the proposed mining sequences. 2- In situ seismic monitoring to collect stress and seismic activity data. 3- Analysis of the in situ data to correlate to the modelling results. The creation and the extraction of a pillar in the 402 O. B. was successfully completed. The recorded seismic activity agrees well with the numerical modelling since most of the seismic activity is localised in the hangingwall where the deviatoric stress corresponds to an early damage process. The moderate levels of deviatoric stress cause localised failure with low level of seismic activity.

"The Kidd Creek metallurgical site has been highly integrated to maximize revenues from its base metals mines. The site's operations include a Concentrator processing 4.3 million tonnes per year of copper-zinc ore, a Copper complex producing 100,000 tonnes per year copper cathode and a Zinc Plant producing 130,000 tonnes per year of zinc metal. To improve operating efficiency with increasing emphasis on productivity, process control, process automation and process optimization have been augmented and expanded during the last decade.New microprocessor based control systems provided the opportunity for the capturing of an expanded number of process related measurements. As supervisory computers were already in place, databases could be generated with only increased disc space and database management programs required. Once the data had been accumulated and stored, a method was then required for handling, screening and sorting large volumes of information in relatively quick and easy terms in order that the stored information could be used. By 1984, a decision to use personal computers for accounting, engineering and management reporting provided the vehicle necessary to handle this data. Using commercially available software, large volumes of stored process data can be downloaded from existing databases, filtered, sorted, analyzed, graphed, displayed, projected, reported and distributed. All this can be performed in very little time."

Copper sulphate solutions are produced during the pressure leaching of first-stage leach residue in a typical base metal refinery process. Apart from impurities such as selenium and tellurium, this leach solution also contains other precious metals (Rh, Ru, and it) due to dissolution in the pressure leaching stage. Selenium and tellurium are removed from the leach solution by precipitation with sulphurous acid, since these elements negatively affect electrowinning. This study investigates the feasibility of modifying the Se/Te precipitation process step to achieve significant rhodium precipitation in addition to selenium and tellurium precipitation, in order to reduce the rhodium inventory of the process. Thiourea, S02, formaldehyde, formic acid, and sodium thiosulphate were evaluated to determine which of these reagents would achieve the highest Rh precipitation. Based on these screening tests, SO2 and thiourea were selected to be used as precipitation reagents in optimization tests. During these optimization tests, the operating temperature (80 to 150°C) and the amount of reagent added (80 to 140 per cent excess) were varied to evaluate the effects that these operating conditions have on the precipitation behaviour of Rh as well as Se, Te, Cu, and Ni, and to propose appropriate operating conditions. It was found that thiourea resulted in good Rh and Se precipitation (typically in excess of 90 per cent), but precipitated noticeably more copper and nickel from the solution than when SO2 was used. In addition, thiourea had poor Te removal characteristics. SO2 achieved a maximum of 70 per cent precipitation of the rhodium. Faster kinetics and a larger extent of Te precipitation were, however, observed when using SO2 compared to thiourea.

Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with engineers from the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering, Montana Tech, Butte, MT, conducted tests to evaluate the tensile strength, fiber count, and adhesion of shotcrete applied to panels at the Chief Joseph Mine, a research and training facility operated by Montana Tech. The tests were conducted in the mine ramp 45 m (150 ft) inward from the access portal at a 15.25-m- (50-ft) long test area divided into five 3-m- (10-ft) long sections. The shotcrete was applied with an Aliva 240.5 machine fitted with a predampener. Different amounts of fiber were entrained for each panel. Background data for the tests were obtained from earlier tests in Nevada, where the typical amount of fiber in the shotcrete is 6.54 kg/m3 (11 lb/yd3). All shotcrete was applied to a minimum thickness of 76 mm (3 in). Cylindrical cores were drilled at the wall-rock interface, and adhesion was tested after 28 days of curing. The goal of this research is to reduce the need to install multiple supports at the advancing face by creating a safer mining system that limits the time miners are exposed to unprotected roof.

The basis of this paper is a compilation of work in the design and construction of copper heap leach facilities, and interviews with various heap leach operations personnel in Chile and Peru. The purpose is not to highlight specific mines and their performance, but rather to discuss geotechnical/civil features of copper heap leach facilities that function well, as well as features that do not. During the 1990s several copper heap leach facilities were brought on-line in South America. Many of these facilities have now been operational for a number of years during which time the operators have been able to monitor the performance of their heaps. This paper serves as a compilation of operators? experiences, and provides a discussion of the lessons learnt over the past decade. Several key geotechnical issues are examined, focusing upon the integrity of the ore, drainage material and pipe network, along with the success of inter-lift liners. This conference provides a timely update of the original paper (Burkhalter et al, 2002).
