Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discovered in theJiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: 1. porphyry related; 2. metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and 3. sediment-hosted deposit.   The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, the chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

The particles commonly encountered in mineral benefication schemes have irregularites that are expressed at many different length scales. In part, this originates from preceding processes (e.g. makedown, comminution, handling and storage), which are known to chemically and physically modify the bulk particle and its surface. Interparticle tribology, dissolution and reprecipitation events along with large-scale mechanical stresses are just a handful of the interactions encountered during processing of particles prior to separation. It is feasible to imagine that each one of these events may impose a fingerprint of characteristic nanoscale, microscale, and macroscale morphological changes that can modify the overall interaction of these particles within a system. Suprisingly there are just a few works on how these resulting features can alter the performance of benefication schemes, and especially flotation.

The International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE), at its 1995 annual conference, established a Seismograph Standards Working Group to develop performance standards for blast vibration seismographs. This group was transformed into the Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section in 1997 with 5 working committees one of which was the Seismograph Standards Committee. Standards are essential to ensure that vibration records from different seismographs would report the same vibration levels within a stated tolerance. In 2000, the ISEE through the work of the Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section published the “Performance Specifications for Blasting Seismographs.” This document is available on the ISEE web site at www.isee.org/sections/blast.htm.

Operations and maintenance departments have had a long-standing adversarial relationship. The widespread evolution and adoption of modern management techniques, such as reliability centered maintenance (RCM) and Lean, however, has driven interest in working co-operatively to optimize overall plant performance. Mining and minerals operations have long adopted RCM in maintenance and are now adopting Lean throughout organizations. Such modern management initiatives explicitly call for co-operation between the two disciplines of maintenance and production and many advances have been made in terms of people and methodology. One area that has lagged behind in supporting these developments, however, is information systems. Enterprise asset management (EAM) systems in maintenance and newer manufacturing execution systems (MES) in operations have not been truly integrated in the needed ways. Complicated plants, different software architectures, continually changing conditions and many other variables have led to systems problems, which have contributed to the maintenance/operations divide. Master data synchronization (the plant tree) and integrated reporting of real-time data with transactional data are just two of the issues that are being solved by new approaches in information technology, including web services and service orientated architectures. New technologies are coming on-stream to enable the final bridging of the gap.

To define the technical competence and capabilities of a nonexplosive excavation concept, the Bureau of Mines conducted reduced-scale laboratory tests of a mechanical excavation tool called a rock splitter. Hydraulically actuated splitters, capable of generating both radial and axial loads on a predrilled hole, were designed and fabricated. Through paired variable testing and drifting simulation, reduced-scale splitter performance was evaluated in concrete. Testing proved that the rock splitter is capable of excavating within the highly confined drift set-ting and that it offers a distinct advantage over splitters that can generate radial loads only.

Introduction Chloride leaching of sulfidic ores has been known about for 100 years. It is recognized as a highly efficient process to produce concentrated leach solutions. Despite this, chloride leaching found little practical application until recently because of the highly corrosive nature of concentrated chloride solutions. This situation changed with the advent of modern construction materials such as GRP, polypropylene, butyl rubber, etc. And in the past 20 years, research has burgeoned in the area of chloride hydrometallurgy. The research impetus stemmed from the belief that chloride leaching can provide an alternative to smelters for treating conventional copper concentrates. In addition, chloride leaching was thought to be suitable for on-site refining of copper at small tonnage operations located in remote areas. And chloride leaching was seen as a logical choice for treating unusual or complex concentrates that smelters could not handle. Underpinning these beliefs is the attraction of chloride-based hydrometallurgical processes for sulfidic ores. Sulfur is liberated in the environmentally acceptable elemental form rather than as sulfur dioxide. Consequently, sulfidic copper ores have received much attention. A review of Edmiston in 1984 describes 12 chloride-based processes. All managed to progress past the "laboratory beaker" stage of evaluation. In nine of these processes, copper is recovered electrolytically. Key features of these processes are summarized in Table 1. Table 1 shows that the processes must include a copper solvent-extraction step. Only these processes produce a clean copper electrolyte capable, with no further refining, of directly producing high quality cathode copper. The ICI/Elkem process is the exception here. The rest of these processes use o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents for the solvent extraction of copper and are constrained by the performance of these reagents. This is governed by hydrogen ion concentration (Equation 1). The practical result is that only relatively dilute copper solutions can be treated (Canmet, Phelps Dodge), or careful pH control or adjustment is necessary (Minimet Recherche, B.H.A.S.). This negates one of the attractive features of chloride leaching - its ability to produce very concentrated copper solutions, up to 40-45 gl-1. [ ] In all four processes using o¬hydroxyaryloxime extractants, solvent extraction transfers the copper from the chloride to the sulfate medium. To minimize cross-contamination of the two anions, the loaded organic solvent has to be scrubbed to remove the chloride ion. INTRODUCTION Gwinnett County, Georgia, is a part of the rapidly expanding metropolitan Atlanta Georgia area. Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Atlanta, Gwinnett County has a current population in excess of 600,000 and is projected to reach a population of 1,200,000 by 2025. As a part of the County’s master plan to supply drinking water for the expanding population and to increase system reliability, the Gwinnett County Public Utilities Department undertook the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project. Figure 1 shows a vicinity map for the project. Prior to construction of the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project the County had a single raw water intake to feed water from Lake Sidney Lanier (Lake Lanier) into a filter plant for processing into potable water. This project together with a newly constructed water filter plant provides Gwinnett County additional capacity and system redundancy to prevent interruptions to the drinking water supply. Lake Lanier is a man made reservoir with over 800 km (500 miles) of shoreline and was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s for hydro electric power generation, flood control, and navigation benefits for the Chattahoochee River. Over time, Lake Lanier has become an increasingly important source of drinking water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. This paper focuses on the primary underground construction and lake tap components of the project including a 42.7 m (140 ft) deep pump station shaft 24.4 m(80 ft) in finished diameter transitioning to a 6.1 m (20 ft) finished diameter shaft, a3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter by 19.8 m (65 ft) deep intake shaft constructed in an average of 21.3 m (70 ft) of water, and a 190.5 m (625 ft) by 3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter modified horseshoe tunnel connecting the two shafts. This raw water intake system, in conjunction with the incorporated pump station with 8 pumps and dual1,829 mm (72 inch) pipelines, provides a system capacity of 1,091,062 m3/day(240 MGD) to two water filter plants and is expandable by the addition of pumps to1,500,210 m3/day (330 MGD). Parsons provided design and construction management services for the project. The $29.6 million contract to construct the project was awarded to W.L. Hailey &Company. Notice to proceed was given August 6, 2001 and substantial completion was achieved on January 20, 2004. Value engineering changes adopted for the project contributed to completing the project at a final cost of $28.8 million.

As a consequence, technology providers tend to focus on automating repetition and complexity, resulting in software that improves individual productivity while failing to address the interdependency of mining functions. For this reason, technology vendors like Gemcom are following partnership approaches with their clients, engaging corporate and operational stakeholders to better understand mining business objectives. This presentation examines some of the approaches that help foster the development of solutions that leverage the information produced during mine operations to improve downstream process control and tactical decision support.

The purpose of this workshop is to describe and demonstrate the use of SPEEDWAVE, a high speed data recorder, its VOD enhancements, and the software which binds the system together. The system was designed by TLC Sohware, SOUTH AFRICA. TLC is a company spedalising in the solution of engineering problems, using computertechnology as a base. TLC was founded in 1987, and has since been involved in many different.measurement, control, simulation and modelling projects. Wth respect to the blasting industry, TLC has, in conjunction with AECI South Africa/ICI, developed a tunnel mining design aid, a ring blasting design aid, a multkhannel seismograph and a laser surveying program. In 1989, TLC designed and built the BA800. a microcomputer-based high speed recorder. These recorders are still in use and are producing valuable results. Based on improved technology and with the field experience of the BA800, TLC has designed and developed the data recorder SPEEDWWE.

No blast evaluation is complete without fragmentation measurements which until now were inaccurate, costly, time consuming and created delays in production. “WipFrag.s”is a fully automated PC based fragmentation analysis system that uses digital photo analysis techniques to measure broken rock. Fragmentation can be measured in minutes using compact videocameras for image acquisition. Even subtle changes in rack quality can be detected providing the information necessary for pattern optimization, explosives evaluation, timing selection, benchmarking and blast model validation.

Remote sensing, in general, is the recording of light and heat from a planet's surface within a certain range of the electromagnetic spectrum. For the Earth, systems capable of this recording are the MultiSpectral Scanner (MSS) and SLAR. The former is the recording system used in satellite and will be discussed in the next section. SLAR stands for Side Looking Airborne Radar. This device sends invisible radar waves which illuminate the Earth's surface. The reflected waves are subsequently recorded as images. The system can operate through darkness and dense cloud cover, and is particularly suited for the study of geological structures at both large and small scale (Wayland 1976). Remote sensing techniques are now widely being made use of in mineral exploration, especially for those last remote 'sanctuaries' where geological data are meagre or non-existent. For places like Borneo, West Irian, the Amazon Basin etc. remote sensing, in the form of both satellite imagery and SLAR, is of considerable help, in fact more often than not the only help, to delineate geological provinces, geotectonic domains and meaningful lineaments. In the case of New Zealand, well made geological maps at scale 1:250 000 by the Geological Survey are available to the public and these provide useful preliminary grounds for the selection of target areas. However, even in this case LANDSAT imagery can be of aid as will be shown later.

As most mining companies are taking advantage of the high market prices for base metals such as steel, copper and zinc, numerous challenges still face them. While demand is strong from countries like China and the United States, demand is still mixed in Europe. This leads to the question of how long these high prices and overall high global demand will last. The tremendous market prices of most precious and base metals have enabled many companies to pay down a significant amount of debt accrued during acquisition and capital expenditure phases. Additionally, mining companies have been able to internally fund and engage in large projects to address future growth, (Less, 2006), thus maximizing the performance of the existing asset base, driving maintenance costs down, and improving and empowering the work-force (Mining Journal, 2006). Market prices and general efficiency gains have addressed these issues to some extent. However, critical issues still face operating managers in the mineral pro-cessing side of the industry. Energy prices, for example, continue to have a negative impact on cash costs for producing an ounce of gold or ton of a given base metal (Cummins, 2003).

Advances in tunneling technology, such as Earth Pressure Balance and Slurry Shield methods, have allowed the tunneling industry to construct tunnels in increasingly difficult ground conditions. In recent years, a number of civil projects including large diameter train tunnels, subway tunnels, water tunnels, sewer tunnels, and combined sewer tunnels have been successfully completed deep beneath the water table in soft ground conditions utilizing modern day Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). With the increase in difficult ground conditions and higher water pressure comes the inherent need to utilize compressed air to gain access to the TBM?s cutterhead and cutting tools. This paper focuses on one such instance in Los Angeles, CA in which Traylor Brothers Inc. performed a cutterhead intervention by compressing the heading of an 11-foot diameter tunnel to approximately 3 bar gauge pressure. This paper focuses on the environmental controls used to manage ventilation, oxygen levels, temperature, and pressure, as well as discusses the problems associated with toxic gases and the increased risk of fire. The paper will also cover the physical science of the environment and the increased risks of performing basic job functions while in a compressed air heading.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 269 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during, calendar year 1979 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. "Despite the lip service that has been paid to pro-active plant maintenance processes over recent years, a significant portion of maintenance in industry is still reactive. The business driving force to prevent expensive production opportunity costs arising from “break-down maintenance” is obvious. Various benefits can be derived from successfully deploying remote equipment diagnosis technology and associated business processes.From an end-client’s viewpoint these include the ability to predict and take actions to prevent equipment breakdowns, increasing the lifetime of equipment by responding to appropriate operating instructions and therefore improving the return on capital expenditure. Better planning and scheduling of maintenance priorities and resources with performance measures like an Equipment Health Index are also possible. The knowledge that a qualified supplier engineer is constantly in touch with the operating conditions of their equipment, albeit remotely, is more than a comfort, and can be translated into quantifiable cost savings and improved supplier service levels."

"Leaching behaviour of nickel – copper matte in a CuSO4–H2SO4 solution during the repulping stage of a matte pressure leaching process has been studied. The base metal recovery process investigated in this study consists of a matte repulping stage prior to a series of pressure leach stages. The repulping stage is essentially an atmospheric leach stage in which the Ni-Cu matte, containing small amounts of cobalt and iron, is leached in copper spent electrolyte from the tankhouse, resulting in dissolution of the nickel with simultaneous precipitation of almost all the copper.Effects of various process parameters on the kinetics and extent of the leaching reactions, as well as on the cementation of copper from the solution have been quantified. The parameters investigated were temperature, particle size, pulp density, stirring speed, residence time, initial copper concentration and initial acid concentration.Leaching characteristics of the preleached matte during the subsequent pressure leach operation has also been studied. The effects of variations in the conditions in the repulping stage on the kinetics and degree of base metal dissolution during the pressure leach stage have been investigated. Any transformations that occur in the mineral phases of the matte during the leaching process have been studied, and a leaching mechanism proposed."

"A sampling campaign was conducted at Kemess in order to identify and assess the chemical and physical factors, which control free gold flotation kinetics in the rougher and cleaner circuits. The rationale behind this approach was that accurate knowledge of the parameters affecting free gold flotation kinetics, can be used to determine how to accelerate free gold flotation. Collected samples were composites of 5-6 cuts over a four-hour period, at steady plant conditions.In the rougher circuit, coarser equidimensional gold particles floated ahead of the finer grained and the flaky gold. Sulphur followed by molybdenum and to a lesser extent silver enhanced gold flotation kinetics, while hydroxyl followed by carbonate ions induced depression."

In connection with the gathering of data for a report on the geology of the Humacao district of southeastern Porto Rico during the summer of 1916, under the auspices of the Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands, conducted by the New York Academy of Sciences, the writer had an opportunity to make a brief examination of the magnetite deposits of the eastern portion of the island. Inasmuch as these deposits have attracted some attention as possible future sources of iron ore, and as there is only scanty reference made to them in literature,' a short description based on this reconnaissance survey was deemed to be worthy of record. The magnetite deposits of eastern Porto Rico occur in association with a belt of limestone, trending approximately S 53° E, which begins 11/2 miles east of Juncos and can be traced for about 6 miles toward the coast. Four outcrops of magnetite were observed, which are designated as Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, on the map shown in Fig. 1. According to the classification of water conservation mining in shallow coal seams in China, when the ratio of the impermeable layer thickness to the mining height is less than 18, the mining belongs to the category of special water conservation, and the strip backfilling mining method is employed. This study is based on the geological conditions in northern Shaanxi. By analyzing the stability of the impermeable layer, the stability criterion of the impermeable layer was developed. The study also investigated the compositions and properties of the backfilling materials. The results show that reasonable subsidence of the impermeable layer is allowed during mining under the basic precondition (upward cracks and downward cracks are not connected).
