Dump truck operators are exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) levels that exceed the International Standard Organization (ISO) 2631-1. The WBV level measured by RMS acceleration value, for operator comfort, and long-term health and safety is under 0.315 m/s2 by these standards. However, fundamental research by Frimpong and Aouad (2009, 2012) and field experimental study by Kumar (1999) have shown that operators are exposed to extreme WBV levels exposing them to injuries and musculoskeletal diseases in the long-term. These extreme WBV values in the vertical direction are equal to 3.56 m/s2, 1.12 m/s2 and 0.87 m/s2 for the operator?s seat, lower-back and cervical regions, respectively. With ever changing bulk explosives technology, bulk delivery and loading systems needed to keep pace. Efficiency, as compared with packaged loading, was the keyword allowing faster loading of trucks and shots. Efficiency was also improved by the explosives coupling factor that bulk loading permitted.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated fumes generated by selected welding electrodes used in mines in order to help determine their relative health hazard potential. Fumes were generated and collected in an enclosed chamber for subsequent generation rate and chemical constituent determination. Shielded metal arc electrodes from the following groups were tested: AWS types E308-16 and E310-16 stainless steel, ECoCr-A Co-Cr hardfacing alloy, ENiCr Ni, an Mn-Cr buildup alloy, E7018 carbon steel, and EII018-M low-alloy steel. Flux-cored wire electrodes of this last group also were tested. Fume generation rates and the chemical composition of the fumes were measured. From these data, exposure in-dices were determined, which give a relative measure of the health hazard potential of using the electrodes. The effect of welding onto build-up alloy layers on the fume composition also was examined for five of the higher alloy groups.

"Drawing upon the experiences of a gold extraction plant startup in the Southern Pacific, this paper will describe the importance of the commissioning phases to the project outcomes to achieve early target production despite an overall time compression to attain full plant production. Some of the highlights of the paper include: impact of roles played by the Owner’s construction and operations representatives during project commissioning, the formation of a capable and competent “Mod Squad,” availability of trained operating personnel, control over work priorities and the scope of work needed to bring the plant to safe initial operations. The commissioning team comprised subject matter experts skilled in process technology supported by “generalists” thoroughly conversant in overall plant operations. The merits of a structured team approach to brainstorm and resolve commissioning challenges as opposed to direction from individual subject matter experts is discussed. IntroductionStartup or commissioning is a unique period in the life of a project. Each stage of a project-exploration, feasibility, design, construction, commissioning, initial operations and continuing operations-requires special talents, know-how, and practices. Each stage makes particular demands of the people involved. Initial operations are no exception.Having experienced the 1997 startup phases of oxide and sulfide facilities for a gold extraction plant at a remote island in the Southern Pacific, I can attest to the many challenges and rewards. Commissioning for both facilities was extremely successful and brought the entire project on line well ahead of the targeted completion dates. Using this specific project as an example, this paper will highlight some of the key features of project commissioning. In this paper, the term “pre-commissioning” denotes all activities that lead to mechanical completion; “commissioning” occurs when feed is introduced; and “initial operations” are defined as the duration when operations accepts the system/facility and takes over."

With improved methods for designing and detonating shots the potential for flyrock can be significantly decreased, but there are few absolutes in blasting; therefore blasters must learn from the mistakes of others. Blasters must conscientiously employ control measures to minimize the risk of flyrock. The worst case incidents which tend to be widely reported by the media, should serve as a reminder to us all that minimizing the risk of flyrock must be incorporated into the design of the drill pattern and blast design.

"The flotation circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper mine, which processes 40,000 t/d of ore at 0.9% Cu, consists of rougher, cleaning and recleaning stages. Mechanical flotation cells are used in all stages. To investigate the amenability of flotation columns in the plant especially for cleaning and recleaning stages, a column was designed, constructed, and installed at the Sarcheshmeh pilot plant. The pilot plant, which has an identical circuit configuration compared to the plant, can process up to 2 t/h of ore. The overall rate constant of the ore along with the target recovery of 94% were used to size the column. A 26 cm by 550 cm column with two filter cloth spargers and a submerged froth washing system using perforated tubes was constructed. To detect the interface level a 180 cm conductivity probe consisting of 1.5 cm diameter ring electrodes was installed. The tailings flowrate controlled by a variable speed pump was used as the main control variable. The initial testing program revealed that the optimum superficial gas and wash water flowrate were 1.5 and 0.3 cds, respectively. It was observed that the cleaning stage grade when using the column could increase by 2-3% at constant overall copper recovery.IntroductionThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body which may rank as third or fourth largest in the world contains 1 billion tomes averaging 0.90 % copper and 0.03 % molybdenum. It is in located south-east Iran and has been processing 40,000 t/d of ore since 1982. After three stages of crushing, the ore with a F80 of 12.7 mm is fed to 8 parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70% finer than 75 microns. The concentrate of the first stage of flotation is reground and the tailings constitutes the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31% Cu (chalcopyrite and chalcocite) is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages in mechanical cells. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83-87 % depending on ore type and operating conditions."

Prolonged, extensive exposure to hand-transmitted vibration could cause a series of vibration-induced disorders in the vascular, sensorineural, and musculoskeletal structures of the human hand-arm system, which have been collectively called hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 To assess the risk of HAVS the international standard ISO 5349-1 (2001)1 recommends using the root-mean-square (rms) acceleration of the measured vibration with a frequency weighting. While a few epidemiological studies have reported results consistent with the predictions made according to the recommendation, many other studies have reported results with large discrepancies.2 This may be partially attributed to the time-averaging effect involved in calculation of the frequency components, especially for impact type tools. Because the spectral characteristics of impact tools change dramatically with time, a time-frequency (T-F) analysis can provide better characterizations of such highly transient vibrations. The analytic wavelet transform (AWT) is an ideal T-F analysis tool because it possesses the advantages of both the Fourier transform and the wavelet transform.3 The objective of this study was to explore the application of the AWT method for characterizing the impact tool vibrations and assessing their exposure risk. Methods Five tools (two chipping hammers, two riveting hammers, and one concrete cutting saw) were used in this study. The saw vibration was measured when it was used to cut a section of road pavement during a repair. The vibrations on the other tools were measured by the procedure specified in ISO 8662-2 (1992).4 A sampling rate of 16,386 Hz was used in the measurement. The AWT and Fourier analysis were applied to these signals and to identify their characteristics. Results Figure 1 compares the T-F characteristics of the accelerations measured from the relatively steady concrete saw and a riveting hammer. The frequency weighting specified in ISO 5349-11 was applied in the calculations. The comparison clearly shows that the two tools have completely different T-F characteristics.

The thermal state in submerged-arc furnaces (S.A.F.) producing ferro alloys is important for the conditions of both the grade of alloy produced as well as specific energy consumption. The temperature profile in the S.A.F. is affected by the endothermic chemical reactions and the rate of gas evolution. The gas evolution commences at about 900 C due to the reduction of iron in the ore. A first-principle-based 2-D model has been developed to predict the temperature profile in the furnace. In this study, four ores of different grades have been considered in order to simulate the thermal profile in the S.A.F. The influence of the composition of the ore on the thermal profile and its significance in rationalisation of charge distribution to optimise the process are discussed.

"An introduction to the metallurgical requirements of the Flin Flon concentrator reveals the magnitude of ore blending which is required in its operation of three flotation circuits. The resulting variability in flotation heads which has in-creased the separations complexity justified the development of an on-line analysis system.This paper provides a summary of the development and operation of that system. Particular attention is devoted to the problems encountered and where possible their solutions; as the requirements of accurate information and minimum downtime of the sampling system and x-ray analyzer are considered essential. The addition of a recess central computer has provided information in a more easily understood form and as well has allowed the start of automatic reagent control.An indication of the on-line analysis system's value to the concentrators' operation is provided by an examination of the plant in metallurgical data and reagent costs in previous years.The metallurgical plants of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting lie adjacent to the city of Flin Flon on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan boundary. Plant operations commenced in 1930 treating copper-zinc ore from the local mine. In recent years ore bodies near Flin Flon and in the Snow Lake area, about seventy-five miles east, have been brought into production.By the beginning of 1973 the number of producing mines had increased to nine; with all the ore being handled by the Flin Flon concentrator. Drag bit cutting tests were conducted chiefly to determine bit forces encountered in rock types representing a range of compressive strength and hardness and thus enable the design engineer to estimate a continuous miner's performance in a range of rock types. Testing was carried out on the Bureau of Mines uniquely designed, instrumented rock cutting device (RCD). This device can make 3-ft-long cuts at various depths and speeds to approximate full-scale drag bit cutting by continuous miners. Point attack and cutter bits were tested on four rock types ranging in compressive strength from 7,200 psi (trona) to 29,600 psi (Valders white rock). Cutting tests were made at depths up to 1 in and speeds up to 70 in/sec. Data included normal and cutting forces, groove depth, groove width, and weight of rock broken. The effect of varying the cutting speed was determined, and specific energies were calculated for the various conditions. The bit wear was also observed. For the rocks tested, compressive strength and hardness are good indicators of forces, specific energy, and wear encountered. Results, especially bit wear observations, show the possibility of extending continuous miners, already being used in trona, to Indiana limestone (10,000 psi). Rapid bit deterioration precludes use in Tennessee marble (16,800 psi) and Valders white rock (29,600 psi).

The Owner Procurement Process or OPP is a proven, viable alternative contract delivery method that is potentially applicable to many tunnel projects. Using the OPP, the owner specifies and procures major tunnel construction items such as tunnel boring machines and tunnel linings and provides them to a tunnel excavation contractor in order to manage risk and accelerate project schedule. However, due to industry perceptions regarding potential owner risk, it is seldom considered or is rejected out of hand. In fact, past performance demonstrates that the process significantly minimizes owner, contractor and over-all project risk and mitigates the impact of any claims and differing site conditions. The paper outlines how the process should be structured to achieve schedule, cost, quality and risk management benefits. Potential and perceived disadvantages are discussed and how the process can be structured to mitigate or avoid them. The planned implementation of this process on the tunnels for the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California is discussed.

Laser slapper detonators are the next generation detonator under development at the Detonations Systems Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory and function very similarly to an electrical slapper. A fiber optic transmits a laser pulse to ablate a thin metal film. This film, or flyer as it is commonly called, is launched through a short barrel to km/s speeds. The flyer shock loads or slaps a high density pressing of secondary explosive, setting off a detonation therein. Laser slapper detonators afford a number of safety advantages over other conventional detonators. Most important they require very high peak laser powers to operate, orders of magnitude larger than possible sources of natural or man-made accidental stimulus. Because light is transported over fiber optics, laser slappers avoid many of the electrical hazards associated with detonators. Use of insensitive, secondary explosives makes these detonators safer to handle, manufacture, transport, and deploy.

Claims of 16 gold mining companies seeking damages from L-208 will be heard in Court of Claims starting Jan. 26. Earlier this year, judges ruled that 3 gold mining companies could sue for damages from the wartime order closing their mines. Congress later waived the statute of limitations thus permitting other gold miners to get in their claims. Despite power shortages third quarter production of aluminum exceeded that of the previous period by 2.2 pct. However, September production was 16 million lb less than in August. Hewitt-Robbins, Inc. dedicated a new $1 million addition to the company's Buffalo, N. Y. belt conveyor plant. New equipment, including a $220,000 press, will make belts up to 70 in, wide, compared with the former limit of 60 in. Charges of a tin cartel in Malaya are not backed up in the latest U. S. Government report according to the Malayan Tin Bureau. The U. S. mission reported that it "did not discover any evidence of curtailment of tin output by the mining and smelting industries." It noted that guerilla activity had halted exploration and expansion attempts by producers.

The bioleaching of sulfide minerals involves a ferric attack of the mineral with the role of the micro-organisms being the oxidation of the ferrous-iron back to the ferric form, and the oxidation of sulfur, either via thiosulfate or polysulfides, to sulfate. The kinetics of bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation and the chemical ferric leach kinetics of sulfide minerals can both be described as functions of the ferric/ferrous-iron ratio. The independently determined bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation and chemical ferric-iron leaching kinetics have been successfully used to predict continuous bioleaching operations.

Over 60 simple; were prepared and forwarded to Dr, S. Z. Toma, TPO, PMSRC as a result of this project. Included among these samples were various low temperature forms of silica. Samples of quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite with iron, manganese, and titanium impurities present were prepared. In addition, a long series of samples both wet ground and dry ground for times from 1/2 to 8 hours were prepared. Numerous miscellaneous samples were submitted which included kaolinite, calcite, muscovite, illite, montmorillonite, Ba3(P04)2, and YPO4 among others, in response to special requests from the TPO. The silica rich portion of selected binary (CA 203-Si02, In 203-Si02, Li20-Si02) Na20-Si02, PbO-Si02, SnO2-Si02, Sn02-Si02 BaGa204-SiO2 and SrGa204-Si02) and ternary systems (Na20-Ga203-Si02 and Li20-Ga203-Si02) was investigated to determine the effects of solid solubility on the stabilization of the high temperature forms of tridymite. In addition to the determination of the extent of these crystalline solubilities, observations were made. on the mechanism of the transformation of silicic acid to tridymite and the rate of the reaction in the presence of foreign ions,

This paper investigates the role of vertical integration between chrome ore mines and ferrochromium smelters in the location of ferrochromium production capacity in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Vertical integration is important in understanding the increasing competitive position of these two countries as observations show that an increasingly larger share of the global market has been coming from integrated producers. The paper argues that the increased vertical integration between mines and smelters in South Africa and Zimbabwe has led to a lower cost of chrome ore as an input compared with other producers. Underlying this hypothesis is the basic tenet that, more likely than not, production will take place where the costs are lowest. The paper concentrates on high carbon ferrochromium (HCFC) production in market economy countries (MEC). Using an ordinary least squares model, the study tests the relationship between low chrome ore costs and vertical integration shows a statistically significant relationship. These findings partially support the view that the control of sources of chrome ore is a major source of competitiveness. [Subbituminous coal or lignite when stored in random piles or in ordinary bins in which the temperature fluctuates and air circulates quickly undergoes objectionable physical and chemical changes, which decrease the utilization value of the fuel and increase its tendency to ignite spontaneously. Slacking takes place, and the heating value decreases. These changes are accelerated by fluctuations of temperature and by circulation of air through the storage space. When such coals are exposed to the weather they lose moisture rapidly. If evaporation from the surface of a lump proceeds at a faster rate than that at which it is replaced by moisture from the interior, the rate of shrinkage at the surface is greater than that at the interior; consequently, stresses are generated at the surface which cause the coal to disintegrate. Likewise, when moisture is absorbed by the air-dried surface the outside layers expand at a faster rate than the interior, which results in further break-down. As these cycles are repeated the lump may disintegrate completely. Therefore, successful storage of low-rank coals depends on control of the factors that influence change of moisture.]

Data obtained from field and laboratory examinations were used by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate 82 silica deposits in the Pacific Northwest. A total of 94 field samples was taken from 64 deposits, and an additional 18 deposits were investigated that did not warrant sampling. Of the 37 deposits found to be of high quality, only 16 were large enough to be classified as industrial silica resources. Another 27 deposits did not meet quality requirements. Methods of simple low-cost beneficiation and rapid classification of a large number of samples were investigated in the laboratory. These tests indicated that high-intensity electromagnetic separation was equal or superior to either high-or low-intensity electrostatic separation. In general, the electromagnetic method gave higher recoveries and produced equal or better grade concentrates. A glass button method developed for estimating iron oxide content of silica samples proved to be highly satisfactory as a means of classifying field samples and evaluating beneficiation tests.

Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) is located in Menlo Park, CA. In order to allow for enhanced experiments, the current facilities required expansion. Tunnels were excavated through very weak sedimentary rock interspersed with uncemented zones (Ladera Sandstone) employing the principles of the NATM. The overburden var-ied from 10 to 80 feet. The paper addresses the characterization of Ladera Sandstone that can exhibit the properties of dense sand and weak rock. The paper focuses on the challenges that were encountered during the NATM initial support design and the construction phase including the geotechnical instrumentation, monitoring and design verification process in particular the excavation of the junction between access tunnel and the FEH cavern (49 ft wide by 32 ft high).

Although many mining companies apply ergonomic principles, it is usually done either informally and/or reactively. An example of an informal approach is replacing worn equipment (such as seats) with models that have ergonomic features. Another example is modifying a task to eliminate safety hazards. Such approaches reduce risk-factor exposures that can lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A reactive approach is followed when modifying a task/ equipment after an MSD occurs. However, neither of these approaches involves a systematic method of proactively applying ergonomic principles to actually prevent injuries or illnesses. This paper discusses how Vulcan Materials Company applied ergonomic principles and implemented interventions to reduce risk-factor exposures.
