The Plumduff sinter occurs at Whenuaroa, near Puhipuhi, approximately 30 km north of Whangarei. It is one of three residual sinters in the southern portion of a mid- to late-Pliocene geothermal system. The deposit consists of many large sinter breccia boulders, including rudrocks (coarse breccias), scattered around the flanks and summit of the small conical hill of Plumduff. Three types of sinter breccia occur: (i) rudrocks consisting of large, angular to sub-angular clasts of layered sinter up to 0.8 m across, as well as smaller clasts of sinter (20 - 100 mm dia), and fragments of stromatolitic structures; all clasts are supported in a matrix of microcrystalline, transparent to translucent to milky quartz; (ii) fragments of layered angular to irregularly mottled sinter of white to grey or bluish hue supported in a translucent to opaque silica matrix; (iii) smaller, matrix-supported breccias with clasts both partially surrounded and/or penetrated, by a clay-like weathering rind, and sinter conglomerates with rounded to oblate clasts. Three principal types of fabrics constitute the bulk of the sinter: (i) stromatolites, including columnar, palisade and filamentous networks, showing progressive silicification, in fenestral, tufted to clotted fabrics; (ii) peloids and pisoids; (iii) plant-rich facies in which various silicified plant species occur in a silica matrix. All fabrics have counterparts in hot spring deposits in the Taupo Volcanic Zone formed at temperatures from 75¦C to 35¦C. Also present is steam-condensate-produced alteration: kaolinite and alunite as well as boulders of quartz lattice texture. Cinnabar only occurs in sinter on the north and south central slopes of the hillside. No quartz veins or geyserite were recognised.

"Ore grades are decreasing and ore deposits are becoming more complex. In order to make a sound economical decision about a mining project, metallurgical testwork must be carried out. A few large “representative” samples cannot represent the metallurgy of a large ore body and a large number of samples reflecting variation in ore head grades and in mineralization types must be obtained for proper metallurgical studies, including flowsheet development for a greenfield project. A relationship can be established between the recovery of valuable minerals and ore grade for each mineralization type. This relationship can be used to establish a correlation between values recoverable and values contained in the ore body that can include multiple pay metals. With this information, a sound economical decision can be made about the viability of a large mining development project.INTRODUCTIONThe demand for minerals today is historically high as many countries are being rapidly industrialized. The supply for these minerals is not necessarily running short. However, it is widely accepted that the world today is running short of the easy to mine and easy to process ore deposits. As ore grade is decreasing and ore mineralogy is becoming more complex, metallurgical testing must be fully conducted in order to make a sound economical decision about a mining project. For a high-grade and high-quality deposit, it is hard not to make a good profit even with low metal prices. For a low-grade and hard to process deposit, the profit margin is much lower and is dependent on the throughput and the recovery of valuable minerals. The recovery of valuable minerals is a function of ore grade and mineralogy and it must be experimentally determined for a given processing option.At Vale Base Metals Technology Development, metallurgical testing for an existing operation or brownfield project is termed as Ore Evaluation, while metallurgical testing for a greenfield project is termed as Flowsheet Development (Xu, 2011). In the past, metallurgical testing involved a few large composite samples for lab and pilot plant testwork. As ore deposit becomes less homogeneous and more variable, a few large composite samples cannot represent the metallurgy of a large ore body. In addition, useful information about the deposit such as zones of “impurities” or floatable rock minerals would not be obtained. Different processing strategies could have been developed if the locations and sizes of these zones were known in advance. For proper metallurgical studies, a large number of samples reflecting variation in ore head grades and in ore mineralization types must be used. A relationship can be established between the recovery of valuable minerals and ore grade for each mineralization type. This relationship can be used to estimate values recoverable in the ore body that can include multiple pay metals. Ultimately, the recovery verses ore grade relationship will be used in business decision-making."

When establishing an underwater testing site for the energy measurements of the explosives, the dimensions of the measuring pool have to be measured to find out what is the maximum weight for the test charge. Secondly one has to decide the distance between the pressure gauge and the shooting point. Thirdly the pool has to be calibrated because of the reflections of the explosions by measuring the bubble periods of the calibration charges. The calibration shots can also be used to estimate the minimum weight of the explosive charge for the reliable energy measurements by calculating the shock, gas heave and total energy values and their standard deviations.

Shovel-truck systems for loading and hauling material in open pit mines are now routinely analysed using simulation models or off-the-shelf simulation software packages, which can be very expensive for once-off or occasional use. The simulation models invariably produce different estimations of fleet sizes due to their differing estimations of cycle time. No single model or package can accurately estimate the required fleet size because the fleet operating parameters are characteristically random and dynamic. In order to improve confidence in sizing the fleet for a mining project, at least two estimation models should be used. This paper demonstrates that the Machine Repair Model can be modified and used as a model for estimating truck fleet size in an open pit shovel-truck system. The modified Machine Repair Model is first applied to a virtual open pit mine case study. The results compare favourably to output from other estimation models using the same input parameters for the virtual mine. The modified Machine Repair Model is further applied to an existing open pit coal operation, the Kwagga Section of Optimum Colliery as a case study. Again the results confirm those obtained from the virtual mine case study. It is concluded that the Machine Repair Model can be an affordable model compared to off-the-shelf generic software because it is easily modelled in Microsoft Excel, a software platform that most mines already use. "Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), and Time of flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS)were used to analyze pyrochlore grains from Niobec froth flotation plant. Samples from the mill feed, pyrochlore rougher feed, pyrochlore rougher concentrate, and tail were analyzed in order to identify a potential relationship between pyrochlore matrix composition and selective separation. SEM-EDX analyses indicate that pyrochlore grains with high Fe content appear to be less recoverable than those with a lower Fe content and that the flotation response is related to matrix Fe rather than Fe occurring as inclusions. TOF-SIMS was used to analyse the surface of high Fe and low Fe pyrochlore, in order to identify a potential relationship between pyrochlore matrix composition and the related effect on cationic collector adsorption (tallow diamine). Surface analyses of pyrochlore from a conditioning test show that species indicative of the collector favour the surface of Fe poor pyrochlore relative to the Fe rich variety. The results from the conditioning test illustrate a negative relationship between collector loading and the presence of Fe and related oxidation species. This study identifies the link between pyrochlore matrix Fe content and, the presence of surface oxidation products, to collector loading. Poor Fe rich pyrochlore recovery noted in the Niobec froth flotation plant may be partially explained by this mechanism.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore, the most abundant niobium containing mineral (Perrault and Manker, 1981) is economically recovered in Brazil, China, and Canada (Niobec) (Kouptsidis et al., 2008). Since 1974 Niobec has been extracting niobium from the St-Honorécarbonatite deposit. Niobec is the only operating Nb extraction facility in North American and one of the three major world producers of ferroniobium (Dufresne and Goyette, 2004; Belzile, 2009).Flotation is the preferred and most cost-effective method for pyrochlore recovery (Burks, 1958; Shapolov and Polkin, 1958; Zakharov et al., 1967; Razvozzhaev and Nikiforov, 1972; Bogdanov et al., 1973; Abeidu, 1974; Raby and Desrochers, 1975; Wilson, 1979; Biss and Nadeau, 1982; Biss, 1985). With the aim of optimising the flotation process for the Niobec ore, numerous experiments were performed on the influence of surfactants and type of water to optimise pyrochlore recovery and grade during flotation (Gomez et al., 1987; Rao et al., 1988; Dufresne and Goyette, 2004; Belzile, 2009)."

The distribution or the userul minerals or Tasmania is so closely connected with the geological structure of the island that it will be convenient to briefly recapitulate the principal ract or its geological history, before describing the ore and other deposits. In many cases these present features which are very puzzling in the absence of knowledge of the structure of the districts in which they are found and in all cases it is of benefit to mining engineers to be acquainted with the main facts of the geological·history of the regions in which they have to carry on operations. Moreover, in speculating as to the origin of lodes and other deposits, we have constantly to rerer to the crumplings or the earth's crust by mountain-making movements, and to the igneous rocks which have been thrust throngh the other strata, to explain the origin or the lode fissures, and this discussion cannot be carried on without knowledge of local geology.The oldest rock yet met with in Tasmania are of Archooan age, and consist of highly crystalline quartzites and micaceous schist. They are most extensively developed towards the western side ot the island, forming a belt parallel to the West Coast from South-West Cape to Cradle fountain; but they also crop out here and there to the west and northward of this belt, where the covering strata or later age have been denuded away. Though not seen in situ in the eastern part of the colony, the abundance or pebbles derived from this formation in the conglomerates of the coal measures shows that it must in those day have formed land surfaces there also, and makes it likely that the archooan strata exist at no great depth: below many of the beds of later age now occupying the surface. Lying unconfortably upon these highly metamorphic strata we find next an extensive series of subcrystalline metamorphic conglomerates, grits, sandstones, slates, and limestones,of Cambro-Silurian age. These are well seen in the Gordou River Basin, along the West Coast Range, aloug the North Coast, and in the goldfields of the north-eastern portion of the colony. They are much broken by later intrusive rocks, and covered by younger rormations, but the series is spread more or less over the whole island.

In response to a solicitation for ground improvement for the construction of a new hospital in Owensboro, Kentucky, the team of Berkel & Company Contractors and Dan Brown and Associates PC designed and installed lightly reinforced cast-in-place piles (known commercially as Cast-in place Ground improvement Elements or CGEs) as part of a composite ground system. The concept of the design is that the structure load is shared between the piles and the soil subgrade. The load sharing is controlled (to some degree) by the placement of a cushion between the pile head and the bottom of the overlying spread foundation. In an effort to confirm the design principles and to better understand the behavior of composite ground, the design-build team performed plate load tests on ground with a single CGE and with a group of CGEs. The small plate test (on ground with a single CGE) characterized the stiffness of the cushion. The large plate tests showed that the cushion will distribute the applied load to the CGEs and to the soil subgrade between the CGEs. On the basis of the plate tests, it was concluded that the plate stiffness can influence the test results. The use of a concrete layer was effective at supplementing the plate stiffness. The cushion was shown to be an important component of a composite ground system by allowing mobilization of the soil subgrade resistance and avoiding a stress concentration at the tops of the CGEs that would otherwise be present if the spread foundation and piles were rigidly connected. Because the composite ground system engages the resistance of the soil subgrade, the structural demand is reduced and consequently there is a potential for savings when compared to a conventional pile foundation. Several foundations for the new Owensboro hospital are being monitored for vertical movement during construction of the superstructure that will extend through 2011. At the time of this paper (mid 2011) the settlement of the foundations due to only part of the structural load (primarily the structural steel) has been negligible.

"The Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia 230km north of Adelaide, began operation in 1889 to process lead concentrate from the Broken Hill lead and silver mines. The site still operates an updraft sinter machine, commissioned in 1955, with the product fed into a blast furnace. While sinter plant technology has changed and improved since 1955, development has reached the stage where further enhancements are not possible or economic. High purity lead concentrates command lower margins and for the smelter to remain economically viable a wider range of higher value materials must be treated. The current flowsheet cannot meet this demand. Additionally, community blood lead levels particularly in children below four years of age, are a critical indicator used to measure the site’s environmental performance. The smelter’s environmental licence to operate is dependent on meeting future community and regulatory expectations. To achieve this a major step change in the emission performance of the smelter is required. Since 2008 pre-feasibility work has been undertaken to develop a new flowsheet and business model to allow Port Pirie to operate sustainably into the future. The main requirements were for the smelter to reduce lead and sulfur dioxide emissions that impact on the local environment and community to meet current and future environmental expectations, as well as dramatically reducing current feed constraints and change the business case from a marginal business to a sustainable profitable business. After reviewing all practical options a decision was made to replace the sinter plant with an Outotec Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace. This paper describes how the new furnace technology was selected and how it will be integrated into the present flowsheet; the unique funding arrangements that are in place to deliver the redeveloped site; and future opportunities that are associated with the implementation of the new flowsheet. Diesel tailpipe CO, C02, NO, and N02 concentrations by the Emissions Measurement Apparatus (EMA) were found to compare satisfactorily with simultaneous concentrations by instruments in the MSHA engine certification laboratory in Bruceton, Pa. The EMA was then applied to the measurement of LHD vehicle diesel tailpipe gases and smoke opacity in the White Pine and Brushy Creek Mines. A general experimental approach was developed by which instruments could be compared for the measurement of diesel exhaust pollutant concentrations in the 1/2 to 5TLV range. The concentrations are changed by varying engine speed, dynamometer load, and the portion of the exhaust which enters the dilution tunnel. Dräger detector tube diluted exhaust CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 measurements were compared with simultaneously taken portable instrument measurements. Diesel exhaust interference inaccuracies were separated from inaccuracies due to detector tube calibration by comparing the instrument readings with both actual detector tube readings and detector tube readings corrected by recalibration of the detector tubes alongside NBS traceable calibration gases. The detector tubes' accuracy was found to be only slightly affected by diesel exhaust interferences and it was concluded that most measure within certification limits established by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The effects of 2 exhaust system configurations on the pollutant concentrations in a dead-end heading were studied. Both of the configurations exhausted the gases near the roof, directing them toward the crosscut, and both improved the stratification of the air in the heading, due to the bouyancy of the hot exhaust gases. One of the configurations was a pair of Fume Diluters which diluted the exhaust with air by a 10:1 ratio, and the second system was simply a pair of exhaust pipes, bent to direct the exhaust similarly to the fume dilutors. By redirecting the exhaust, the concentration of C02 measured on the LHD vehicle was reduced by as much as 507, in dead-end headings up to 200 ft long. The Fume Diluters showed no improvement over the simple redesign of the exhaust system.

The Boudouard reactivity of single cokes produced from selected bituminous coals and commercial cokes has been investigated in a thermo gravimetric furnace. The effect of potassium as a catalyst for this reaction was studied, as it is known to accumulate in ferromanganese furnaces. A gaseous impregnation technique using K2CO3 as the potassium source was applied to impregnate the coke samples. The reactivity experiments were designed to simulate conditions occurring in an industrial furnace, as used for production of Mn-alloys. The coke particle size varied from 3.35 to 6.63 mm, while the temperature was maintained between 800- 1100oC with a gas composition from 50 to 75% CO2 in a CO/CO2 mixture. To determine the catalytic effect of potassium, the concentration varied from a fraction of a percent up to 15%wt. The results show that single chars vary significantly in reactivity, depending on the properties of the parent coal, while commercial cokes exhibit similar reaction rates. Temperature and partial pressure of CO2 have the strongest influence on the reactivity, while the influence of gas flow rate and coke particle size were found to be negligible. The catalytic studies revealed that the relative reactivity of non-impregnated samples are preserved after the impregnation, so the least reactive coke is still the least reactive after the impregnation for the whole range of potassium loads. Also, it has been confirmed that the Boudouard reactivity reaches a plateau at potassium concentration of 4%wt.

Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. With a brownfield project comes control integration challenges. The Khumani Iron Ore Mine’s second phase expansion posed a number of challenges as there was substantial brownfields work conducted. The fi rst phase was the compilation of the modifi ed process functional specifications for the project. The second phase was an audit on all of the operational sequences; this included a comparison between the SCADA sequences, sequential starts analysed from the historian data (with the potential for improvements made by the plant operators in manual start-ups) and what was proposed in the process functional specification. Differences, inclusions and missing equipment were highlighted. The third phase was the comparison of interlocking and control in the PLC with the updated process functional specification; this was done during the coding process. Running parallel to the three phases was the SCADA integration; tie-ins to the existing SCADA were conducted on maintenance days and shutdowns, in many instances with ‘dummy’ equipment to get the operational staff accustomed to the new interface. This paper details each of the phases, the success of this methodology as well as the pitfalls experienced.

[Zr(C9H6NO)4]?(HCON(CH3)2)?(H2O), where (C9H6NO) = 8-hydroxy quinoline (oxH), was synthesized and characterized. This tetrakis-coordinated zirconium complex crystallized in the triclinic crystal system (Pi, Z=2) along with water and N,N?-dimethylformamide(DMF) solvate in the asymmetric unit. The metal atom is surrounded by four N,O-donating bidentate ox-ligands that are arranged around the metal centre to give a square antiprismatic coordination polyhedron with a small distortion towards a dodecahedral geometry. Crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular interactions of adjacent oxine ring systems in neighbouring molecules, as well as hydrogen bonding of the aqua and DMF solvate molecules, linking the molecular entities into a supramolecular three-dimensional network.

This paper presents the calibration of a real-time aerosol monitor, the TSI DustTrak?, to the NIOSH 5040 method being used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for compliance enforcement evaluation. The standard NIOSH 5040 instrument for compliance evaluation of diesel particulate matter (DPM) has an inherent time lag of up to two weeks for laboratory processing of sample results. Therefore, providing the underground mines with a means of quantifying DPM conditions in real-time, will enable them to efficiently and effectively manage DPM levels to ensure compliance with the regulated limit.

In this paper, the finite element method is used to obtain deformations of a rock tunnel. More than 3,000 numerical simulations and calculations were carried out. The analysis of this results has allowed to achieve mathematical formulations and graphs, to obtain in advance support monitored displacements in tunnelling construction, so they can be predicted before excavation and supporting woks. The application of the presented formulations and charts will aid engineers to control tunnel monitoring, reducing decision time when problems occur. The analysis is limited to cases involving elastic behaviour of the terrain for tunnels of average to good quality in rock, and to excavation sections of average or smaller dimensions for road tunnels. The results show that, in all cases, mathematical expressions to obtain induced displacements around tunnel excavations, have similar pattern than Kirsch (1898) expressions for circular excavations. As corollary of the achieved results, a method to estimate in situ natural geostress ratio K0=sh/sv , by means of convergence measurements, is presented. In diesem Beitrag wurden die Verschiebungen eines Tunnels durch die Methode de Finiten Elemente berechnet. Mehr als 3000 numerische Simulationen und Berechnungen wurden ausgeführt. Die Analyse dieser Resultate hat es ermöglicht, mathematische Formeln und Grafiken zu entwickeln, die zur Voraussage der Verschiebungen in Tunnel dienen, auch unter Betrachtung der verschiedenartigen Abstützungen. So können die Verschiebungen vor den Erdarbeiten und dem Bau der Abstützung abgeschätzt werden. Die abgeleiteten Formeln und Grafiken werden vor allem einen grossen Dienst für Ingenieure bei der Mithilfe zu zeitsparenden Entscheidungen im Tunnelbau und bei der Tunnelkontrolle leisten. Die analysierten Fälle sind auf eine elastische Modellierung des Baugrunds beschränkt, sowie auf eine mittlere bis gute Qualität des Felsens und auf die Aushebung von Abtragungsabschnitten mittlerer oder geringer Grösse für den Strassenverkehr. Die Resultate zeigen, dass in allen Fällen die hergeleiteten Formeln zur Berechnung der durch den Tunnelbau verursachten Verschiebungen um den Tunnel die gleiche mathematische Struktur haben wie diejenigen von Kirsch (1898) für kreisförmigen Bodenaushub. Als Korollarium der ausgeführten Berechnungen wird eine Methode zur Abschätzung der vorherrschenden in situ Geospannungs-Verhälniss K0=sh/sv angegeben, die von den Messungen der Verschiebungen im Tunnel ausgeht. Dans cet article, la méthode des éléments finis est utilisée pour obtenir les déformations d’un tunnel creusé dans la roche. Plus de 3000 simulations numériques et calculs ont été effectuées. L’analyse de ces résultats a permis de définir des modèles mathématiques et des abaques afin de prédire, avant l’excavation et les travaux de soutènement, les déplacements auscultés pendant la construction du tunnel. L’application de ces modèles et abaques permettra donc aux ingénieurs de contrôler les déplacements durant l’auscultation du tunnel et de réduire le temps de décision lorsque des problèmes surviennent. L’analyse est limitée au cas du comportement élastique du terrain pour des tunnels creusés dans de la roche de moyenne a bonne qualité, et à de sections d’excavation de petites à moyennes dimensions pour des tunnels routiers. Les résultats montrent que, dans tous les cas, les expressions mathématiques permettant d’obtenir les déplacements induits autour des excavations de tunnel, présentent des similitudes avec celles de Kirsch (1898) pour des excavations circulaires. An amphoteric collector was tested for dolomite removal from phosphate ore. The effects of some operating parameters and their significance on the flotation of dolomite were studied using statistically designed experiments. The parameters studied were impeller speed, pH and collector dosage. Analysis of the results showed that pH is the most significant parameter. Moreover, a concentrate containing 0.53% MgO and ~31.1% P2O5 with a recovery of ~ 90% can be achieved at optimum values of studied parameters, i.e., a pH of 12, an impeller speed of 1,000 rpm and a collector dosage of 2.5 kg/t.

This paper presents the conceptual design of a magnetically-levitated skip for use in an underground mine. A skip is used to move rock from an underground mine to its surface processing facility. Conventionally the skip is raised and lowered by cables, similar to an elevator. In a magnetically-levitated skip, the cable is replaced with a linear induction or synchronous motor to provide propulsion and levitation. Removal of the cables in a magnetically-levitated skip provides many advantages over a conventional system including the ability: to negotiate corners, to travel vertically in the shaft as well as horizontally to the mining face, and to move a very large volume of material using multiple skips in a small shaft. A magnetically-levitated skip is a safer, more environmentally-friendly, productive alternative to conventional skipping. It has the further advantage to decrease haulage distances for underground vehicles.
