"In January 1983, Gibraltar Mines Ltd. started an exploratory program on Column Flotation with hopes of improving performance of the Molybdenum Cleaning circuit. The encouraging results led to a column test trial in the Bulk Copper Cleaner circuit where the test unit has per¬formed well. A program was undertaken to understand the mechanics of column operation. A year and a half later, Gibraltar is considering the replacement of existing Bulk Copper and Moly Cleaning flotation cells with a fully computer con¬trolled Column Flotation circuit.BRIEF SUMMARY OF TESTWORKInitial testwork was done with a home made 20 inch diameter x 31 foot high column, equipped with a doppler flow-meter at the tail line and automatic level conrol. This loop maintained constant level in the column by throttling the tail valve. This column was placed in a variety of locations around the Moly circuit as shown on Figure 1 a, b. Test re¬sults indicated that the column could achieve much higher grades than the conventional cells, but recovery wise, the performance was low. Spillages from overloaded pump boxes were a common frustration during this time.Column control strategy was reviewed; and, in light of information received from McGill University, changed to conform with the methods that had been employed by D. Wheeler, of the Column Co. of Canada4 and Gaspe Copper Mines3.The column was tested replacing a portion of the bank, figure lc. The results obtained were more or less equal to the circuit. However, as we had Nitrogen gas connected to the column and not the regular cells, the column was kept in service. With the use of Nitrogen in the column, the usual copper depressant, Sodium Cyanide could be replaced with Sodium Hydrosulphide, hence lower operating cost.As time went on, a 10 inch diameter column was added in series to re-treat the concentrate of the 20 inch diameter column with hopes that the copper content would decrease from 0.6% down to 0.3% in order to save on subsequent leach¬ing costs. So far, results indicate there has been some im-provement, hut we are not achieving 0.3% copper. (See figure 1d)."

Complex gold deposits are generally characterised by variable geometries, strong structural controls on grade distribution and a high-nugget effect. The use of diamond drilling and fire assays in this environment often results in an understatement of grade. Bulk samples are likely to be the closest estimators of true grade, and may be required to evaluate geological/grade risk during resource estimation/feasibility studies. Any bulk sampling program requires appropriate planning and implementation. The planning stage should attempt to delimit the extent and nature of mineralisation; characterise mineralogy and metallurgical properties of the ore; and define bulk sample size and how it will be sampled/processed. The approach to sample processing will be governed by the results of metallurgical testing and geological knowledge. Careful design of sampling protocols must be undertaken through material characterisation, understanding of gold particle sizing and the application of GyÆs Sampling Theory.

"Mining companies have recognized that characterization of ore breakage plays an essential role in the design and optimization of comminution circuits.Recently the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has developed a new breakage model incorporating the effect of particle size, and a new breakage characterization testing device, called the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT), which allows rapid testing of particle breakage under high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impact conditions.Positive feedback received from mining company sponsors to the new technology has prompted the JKMRC to further validate the device and the model through a formalized validation program using machines designed and manufactured by Russell Mineral Equipment (RME). The first unit was installed and commissioned at the Anglo Platinum laboratory in Johannesburg in March 2007 and four more major mining companies will participate in the validation program in 2008, including Barrick, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Teck Cominco. The results from validation tests at the JKMRC and Anglo Research have shown that the JKRBT generates statistically similar breakage parameters to the traditional Drop Weight Test, but with significant advantages over its predecessor. Application of the JKRBT in geometallurgical testing with the AMIRA P843 GeM project has confirmed the JKRBT device offers a rapid and consistent method for determining the hardness of drill core samples. The JKRBT has the potential to revolutionize ore testing, with applications in laboratory impact breakage characterization of rock samples, drill cores, coal and other materials. It also stands poised to significantly advance the process control and management of comminution circuits since the concept is readily adaptable to on-line ore hardness measurement.INTRODUCTIONMining companies have long recognized that the performance of a comminution machine such as a crusher or an autogenous / semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG) mill depends not only on the machine operating conditions, but also on the “hardness” of the feed material to be broken. This recognition has driven significant interest in laboratory particle breakage characterisation and testing. The laboratory breakage characterization tests can be roughly classified in two broad groups based on their primary breakage modes: tumbling and impact/compression. The famous Bond ball/rod mill tests (Bond, 1952 and 1961) represent the typical tumbling test and have become the industry standard for estimating the specific energy (kWh/t) of rod and ball mills. However, as the energy application in the single particle impact tests can be well defined and controlled, the latter have received significant attention in the last 30 years. It was estimated that mining companies worldwide spent over three million US dollars on single particle impact breakage characterization testing in 2006."

Combustion and thermal NOx formation have been modelled using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) commercial code Fluent 6.1. The aim was to predict and give a better understanding of the combustion in electric arc furnaces for the production of ferro-silicon and silicon metal. Another important objective was to assess the impact of a number of operating parameters on the NOx formation. The CFD tools used are de-scribed with a special focus on models for species and turbulence transport. Sensitivity studies have been carried out to study the influence of several parameters: sub-models, process gas composition and distribution at the charge surface and influence of the presence of SiO. The main conclusions are: ?Using the combination of a realistic design, boundary conditions and models, the simulated NOx level is in quantitative agreement with measurements. The presence of water vapor is particularly important because of its influence on the specific heat of the mixture and resulting temperature. ?Release of significant amounts of SiO from the charge surface results in an important increase of NOx, even if we applied a simplified combustion model for SiO gas. However, because of lack of thermal and compositional data for blowing situations (when SiO flows directly from the arc cavity through open channels to the charge surface), no quantitative validation is possible. The way SiO is distributed (uniformly or as a jet) has a limited impact on the result in our computations.

"Abstract: The use of micropiles has greatly increased the last twenty years, including applications involving low capacity micropile networks, seismic retrofitting, underpinning of existing foundations and high capacity foundations for new structures. This paper presents a field study of the behaviour of single hollow core micropiles in firm to stiff lean clay. Eight micropiles were installed using hollow bars (76 mm OD and 48 mm ID) with air/water flushing technique and advanced to a depth of 5.75m: six micropiles were installed using 228 mm (9 in) drill bit and two micropiles were installed using 178 mm (7 in) drill bit. All micropiles were instrumented with linear potentiometers to measure the vertical displacement of the micropile head and vibrating wire strain gauges to measure the axial strain at three points along the micropile length. Twelve full scale tests were conducted on the eight micropiles, four monotonic compression, four cyclic compression and four tension tests. Only the results of micropiles tested under monotonic compression is presented in this paper. The full scale load tests and a comparison of the performance of the micropiles with 228 mm and 178 mm drill bit are presented and discussed in terms of load-displacement curves, bond strength and tip resistance. The results showed that the proposed values of bond strength in FHWA give a conservative design of the hollow core micropiles. The micropiles constructed with 228 mm drill bit performed marginallybetter than the micropile with 178 mm drill bit in terms of the ultimate capacity.IntroductionMicropiles have been defined in a variety of ways, but can universally be classified as small diameter (less than 300mm), bored, and grouted in place piles (FHWA, 2005; Bruce et al., 1999; and Scherer et al., 1996). They can sustain axial (compression and tension) and/or lateral loads. Dr. Fernando Lizzi used micropiles in 1952 for underpinning of historic buildings damaged during World War II (Bruce D. A., 1988). Since then, micropile applications have expanded rapidly to include underpinning for existing foundations, in situ reinforcement, and seismic retrofitting and foundations for new construction. In particular, micropiles have graduated from use in low-capacity micropile networks toapplications as single high-capacity foundation.Micropiles capacity is affected by the construction technique, which involves drilling, placing reinforcement, and placing or pressurizing the grout. For example, the drilling method influences the degree of bonding between the grout and the ground, and the placement of reinforcement and the choice of grouting method have an impact on the development of the bonding. Bruce et al. (1997) showed that grout/ground bond is most affected by the grouting method. Based on the type of pressure applied during the grouting process, micropiles are classified as follows (FHWA, 2005): Type A: grout is placed under gravity pressure only using either sand-cement mortars or neat cement grout. Type B: pressures typically in the range of 0.5 MPa to 1 MPa are applied in order to inject the neat cement grout into the drilled hole while the temporary drill casing is withdrawn. Type C: involves two-step process; neat cement grout is first placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only as in type A, and prior to the hardening of this primary grout, a similar grout is then injected via a preplaced sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of at least 1 MPa. Type D: like type C, this type is a twostep process: neat cement grout is placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only (but pressure could be applied in some cases), additional grout is injected via a sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of 2 MPa to 8 MPa once the primary grout has hardened. Today, a typical blaster is likely to wear many hats, including, but not limited to, supervisor, risk manager, safety coordinator, explosives engineer, communicator, as well as professional decision maker. Simply put, a blaster in the new millennium is an all encompassing blast site manager. As you know, accidents on the blast site can range from blast crew injuries to blasting incidents resulting from vibration, flyrock, misfires, etc. Not surprising, the incidents can quite often be traced back to direct preventable human action on the blast site. They can, however, frequently be avoided, if responsibly identified early and managed properly by an efficient blast site manager. Your company cannot afford to simply employ blasters; good blast site managers are necessary to produce the safest results possible.

The necessary capability of the gravity transportation pipeline system for cemented coal gangue backfilling at the Suncun Coal Mine, China, is about 74.4 m3?h-1 according to mining production and working times in the mine. It is estimated that the working velocity and maximum pipe length-backfill depth ratio of the backfill system are 3.82m?s-1 and 5.4, respectively and that the probable backfill capability of the system is 110.18m3?h-1. Results of hydraulic calculations for the backfill transportation system show that the designed backfill system is reliable in flowability and sufficient for backfill capability needs.

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history. The current sampling protocol utilises whole drill core, using LeachWELL assays after logging and photography.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2017. This paper describes the process typically involved with obtaining permits for quarry blasting in urban, suburban, and rural areas, including: content of SEPA (State Environmental Policy Act) driven documentation; regulatory review and comment; public interaction; public hearing(s); periodic regulatory review(s); negotiated solutions; monitoring; and the role of public interaction, demonstration(s), and education in the process. Case studies will be presented of projects undertaken in the State of Washington that illustrate the approach and regulatory interaction as well as the importance of public interaction throughout the process. Reference will be made to the role of national and state regulations and local codes and ordinances that provide additional limitations on blasting practice. The paper will also present regional blast monitoring data that are used in the permitting process and the layout and design of blast monitoring systems typically required as conditions of the quarrying permit. Our presentation will include tools, which we have developed to assist with explaining blast related phenomenon to both regulators and the public.

The ultimate object of this investigation is to develop a method for determining the pressure, in situ, on rock mine pillars, arches, and other mire structures. The preliminary investigations of Bureau of Mines engineers, as well as those of other investigators,4/ have shown that the velocity of sound depends on the pressure if it is dependent to such an extent that a measurement of the velocity might be used as a means of determining the pressure, a sonic method of measuring the pressure on rock mine columns is possible. Briefly the method would require, first, laboratory determination of the variation of the velocity of sound with pressure in samples of rocks taken from mine pillars to establish a. velocity-pressure relationship for the type of rock and, next, measurements of the velocity of sound in the mine pillars from which the laboratory samples were taken. The pressure on the pillars could be determined by correlating the velocity in the pillar with the velocity-pressure relationship established in the laboratory. Obviously the success of the method depends on the extent to which the velocity of sound varies with pressure in rock.

Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloy has excellent soft magnetic properties compared with conventional silicon steel. It is very brittle at room temperature due to appearance of ordered phases, like B2 and DO3. In this paper, we investigate the effect of ordering on cold workability of this alloy. Methods of rapid quenching and hot rolling were utilized. It is found that rapid quenching and proper heat treatment of the hot rolled sheet could decrease the degree of order due to the very high solidification rate and high cooling rate. The rapid quenched sheet and hot rolled sheet after proper heat treatment could be cold rolled without crack. Microstructure, phase ordering, micro hardness, and cold rolling properties were investigated by Optical Microscope, X-ray Diffraction, Micro Hardness Indenter and Four-high Mill.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Oxygen isotope analysis indicates that quartz, carbonates and muscovite could all have formed in near-isotopic equilibrium with the mildly saline H2O-CO2 ore fluid at 330 degrees C. Calculated values for O, C and S in the ore fluids imply derivation from a deep, homogeneous source region and are consistent with formation either as a direct or an indirect result of igneous processes. Values for delta-O18 plot a little outside the accepted magmatic range, but have almost certainly been modified by exchange reactions with wall rocks. These reactions were also the most likely cause of deposition of the ore constituents. The chemical and isotopic character of the fluid was similar to that in many Archaean and later mesothermal auriferous vein systems, especially the Mother Lode region of California. The Anshan Iron and Steel Co. (AISC) broke its steelmaking design capacity in 1978, bringing its total production of steel products to 6.86 Mt. Located south of the industrial city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, in northeastern China, it is by far China’s most important iron and steel complex, ranking twentieth among world centers. The complex represents a unique blend of old ecluipment and new ideas for increased production and improved products. Under a state plan, the Chinese hope to raise capacity to almost 15 Mt/a in the future. Originally started by the Japanese in the early 1920s, Anshan has had a rather turbulent 60-year history. It was disassembled by the Soviets after World War II, only to be reassembled by them in the 1950s. Production was also suppressed during the Cultural Revolution. Since the present-day organization, AISC, emerged, the center has experienced progressively improving conditions as well as increased production. Today, the center includes 10 blast furnaces, 24 open hearths, and two basic oxygen units, designed for 7 Mt/a ironmaking and 6.5 Mt/a steelmaking. In addition, it has six batteries of cokemaking facilities with combined 4.4-Mt/a capacity. Solid Iron Resources Anshan’s iron resources consist of a proven reserve base of over 7 Gt of 30~0 Fe, according to Kao Yang, president of the Anshan Iron Mining Co., a subsidiary of AI SC, Most of that, he continued, is amenable to surface mining. Five major mines located to the north and northeast of the city of Anshan are the principal iron ore producers. These mines trend in a somewhat circular manner and combined, represent an estimated 28.6 Ylt/a of ore capacity. In addition, some 2.2 Gt of magnesite, a necessary ingredient in steelmaking, are also part of the reserve base, according to Kao. Annual production is around .2 Mt/a of 47% magnesite, well over the steelmaking center’s annual requirements, Excess production is shipped to other steel-making centers. The largest of Anshau’s open-pit mines is the Chitashan operation with a design capacity of 8 Mt/a. Ore reserves here are well over a billion tons of 30% Fe. Earlier plans to expand production at this mine to 15 Mt/a, with the help of US Steel, have been temporarily shelved. The other mines in the district and their rated design capacity are: Kungchangling, 7 Mt/a; Donganshan, 6.4 Mt/a; Dakushan, 4.2 Mt/ti; and Yenchienshan, 3.0 Mt/a. The Kungchangling mine is the richest in terms of ore grade at 6076 Fe. Reserves are somewhat smaller at 100 Mt. The unit also operates a small shrinkage stoping operation. Modern underground coal mines can be very large, having a total connected load in excess of l5 000 hp. These mines generally have many miles of high-power conveyor belts and 15 or more miles of high-voltage power cables at distribution voltages of 12.47, 13.2, 13.8, or 14.4 kV. The shielded cables used in mine power distribution systems have a significant level of capacitance, on the order of 110 pF/ft. This level of capacitance, in an extensive power distribution system at today's voltage levels, can cause significant charging currents during a ground fault. This paper addresses the potential detrimental effects of capacitance charging currents during line-to-ground faults in mine power distribution systems. A representative mine power system is modeled, and simulations with faults at various locations are conducted to evaluate the effects of this capacitance on the level of fault current and relay selectivity. This paper also includes results of capacitance measurements made on mine power feeder cables used to validate the simulation model.

Two computer programs for the real-time calculation of concentration distributions in the ventilation system of underground mines were designed. They allow one to simulate the movement of fumes or other contaminants with the ventilating air, the calculation of concentrations at any given point and time, and the determination of the total contaminant exposure at different places in the mine. Multiple and time variable contaminant sources can be handled and recirculation is no obstacle. The, first program is based on an airflow distribution which has, in the input data, to be stated. The second program has been linked to in existing program for the calculation of airflow distributions. Two versions of this second program are provided to accommodate the two existing programs. Several executed examples demonstrate the program performance.

The contract for the Water Jet Chock Mounted Miner Feasibility Study was awarded to FMC Corporation's Advanced Products Division on 18 November, 1974. The program was divided into four phases as follows: ? Phase I - Planning ? Phase II - Conceptual Design ? Phase III - Budgetary Cost Estimate and Economic Feasibility Study ? Phase IV - Final Report During Phase I, which lasted 1 month, most of the necessary information and data for the conduct of Phase II was obtained. To accomplish this, arrangements were made for personal visits to the University of Missouri at Rolla, Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute, USBM TCMRC, Alpine Equipment Co., Mining Progress, Inc. and Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Harris No. 1 Mine. Also, a list of manufacturers of high pressure equipment was compiled to be contacted during Phase II. Finally, the objectives to be accomplished during Phase II were outlined. The Phase I Report was submitted on 23 December, 1974. At the beginning of Phase II, personal visits were made to the research centers and firms mentioned above. Later an additional visit was made to the Harris Mine, and to the Pittsburgh Mining Research Center at Brucetun to observe a test of a water jet mounted on an Alpine Mining Machine. Equipment manufacturers of high pressure components such as hoses, tubing, valves, pumps, and intensifiers were contacted to obtain item performance data, availability, and cost.

To improve rock-burst control in deep vein mining, a field demonstration has been carried out by the Bureau of Mines to test a new rock-burst control concept--rock preconditioning in advance of mining. The procedure is to fracture the major rock-burst-prone zone during the development of each level before production mining. This allows initial mining to begin in a preconditioned zone and later mining from the level below to end in a prefractured or preconditioned pillar zone that is relatively burst-free. This full-scale field demonstration was carried out On the 7700 level of the Hecla Mining Co.'s Star-Morning mine. An expected burst-prone zone along the main vein between 7 and 10 crosscuts, some 250 feet long by 40 feet above and below the level, was preconditioned by blasting a fanlike ring of drilled holes from each crosscut. The drill holes, up to 100 feet long and 4 inches in diameter, were loaded with high explosives and shot. About 4,550 feet of drilling and 9,000 pounds of explosives were involved in the effort. Comparison of preshot and postshot data from monitoring instrumentation indicated that the blasting did fracture the rock in the planned zone and did result in an immediate stress decrease and softening of rock. The field data compared favorably with predicted results from a finite-element computer model simulation of the destressing. Based on observations made during mining and on the data from the Hecla rock-burst monitoring system, there is no doubt that this preconditioning in advance of mining demonstration resulted in much-improved rock-burst control during first-floor mining. It was also concluded that preconditioning the vein was more effective than preconditioning the wall rock.

This paper is a summary of the work carried out by an international team of specialists in the successful explosive compaction of the sand fill core of the Molikpaq offshore oil production structure. The sand fill core is an essential element for the stability of the structure. The sand core must resist liquefaction forces caused by heavy wave action, ice loading, and earthquakes. Explosive compaction methods were used to improve the stability of 220,000 cubic meters of coarse dredged sand placed in the core area. This project was challenging for a number of reasons. It was performed offshore in Russia, seven kilometers off the East Coast of Sakhalin Island. Logistics were a challenge, not just in getting the men and materials to the site, but also working with restricted headroom inside an operating oil drilling platform. This project called for the use of specialty explosives, strict blast vibration controls requiring a complex sequential blast design, and use of custom designed drill rigs. As Russian equivalent explosives were not available, the project involved getting approval for use of North American explosives in Russia, and use of a combined Russian - Canadian blasting crew. The blasting program was carried out successfully, meeting the required densification target _in a safe, effective manner, with no damage to the structure.

Microseismic monitoring has become standard practice in the mining industry as a ground control monitoring tool at depth. Translating the information into practical hazard assessment tools for the rock mechanics practitioner is the focus of research jointly conducted at Creighton Mine by INCO Mines Technology Centre (MTC) and the Geomechanics Research Centre (GRC) in Sudbury, Ontario. Rock mass damage mechanisms are typically related to stress and the presence of geological structures. Due to well executed de-stress blasting practices at the mine, stress related problems are minimized. However, structurally related damage mechanisms associated with shear zones, faults and joints pose a substantial hazard. Identifying active structures from the dataset of seismic and microseismic events is generally problematic. We propose a new methodology that uses a combination of spacetime event density, hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis to identify planes of microseismic activity, termed active planes (APs). Once identified, the presence and intersection of active planes can be used to provide a hazard ranking for nearby excavations. The ranking is based on the standard Q rock mass classification system, with emphasis on the joint set number (Jn) and stress reduction factor (SRF) parameters. If the rock is treated as a fractured continuum, then, the Jn indicates the degree of freedom for blocks to move and hence, increased potential hazard. An increased hazard can also result if the APs are larger-scale and discrete (faults) rather than ubiquitous (joints). In this case the SRF is used as a measure of the degree of looseness in the rock mass.
