Of particular interest is the capability of GIS to link spatial features and tabular data. The application of GIS in underground mining discussed here concentrates on four technical areas. They are land ownership and mineral claims, exploration management, production and mine safety.

Greensand, which is widely distributed in the Eastern United States, was produced in 1976 only by the Inversand Co., a subsidiary of Hungerford & Terry Inc., near Clayton, N. J. Production and sales information is withheld by the Bureau of Mines. Raw greensand produced by the company was sold for agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Processed greensand was sold for use as a filter medium for the removal of manganese, iron, sulfide, and other elements from water.

The objective of this study is "to assess the impact of surface mining on soil compaction in the Midwest". The study revolves around a unique field sampling program targeted at four mine sites utilizing four distinct types of soil movement of midwestern prime land. Through the preparation of a final report for use as a guidebook, an assessment is made of the degree to which surface mining operations contribute to the soil compaction problem. The final report is formulated through the use of field study data as well as information gathered in an intense literature review. The final report centers on applying collected data to practical field applications. Soil sampling on the four mine sites centers on a comparison of natural and replaced soils for moist bulk density. This characterization evaluates changes in density and texture throughout the soil profile to a depth of 48 inches. Fertility of the topsoil is also assessed for natural and replaced soils. During field sampling and observations, a base of information has been gathered to compile a case study on each mine site. The report accesses the regulations in the prime farmland areas through the use of a matrix. The regulatory matrix allows easy access of mining personnel to State and Federal regulations.

Acidic and basic uranium leach plant residues located on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Tuba City, Ariz., were successfully stabilized against wind erosion using a relatively low-cost chemical method. An elastomeric polymer chemical was applied to the dike areas and a calcium magnesium lignosulfonate to the beach areas of three tailings ponds. The water-soluble chemicals were applied with an automated sprinkling system. The stabilization cost was $335 per acre for the 34.5-acre tract.

Quality control is a system which should guarantee that quality is achieved. It is the execution and verification of a project in an organised way, in order to obtain the maximum of certainty that the results meet the requirements. This concerns all stages of the project, from the soil investigation, over the design, to the execution. Quality control can and has been successfully realised for important projects by means of a quality plan. A quality plan is based on a number of general considerations, but should certainly be focussed on the particularities of a specific project. Practical examples of quality plans, which have been realised on sites in Belgium, are developed and the advantage of the system is shown by concrete case studies.

The early to mid 1980s was a period of mining consolidation, and many senior design engineers retired from the mill industry. Similar conditions have existed in the last few years. This creates a loss of a tremendous amount of experience. This paper is a look back by two senior mill designers who survived the dips in both time periods. From a continuous design practice of over 25 years, mill designs and fabrication practices are surveyed with a view of identifying what works, and is necessary, and what doesn’t, or is not necessary, in the creation of a safe, economic, long-lived grinding mill.

Located on the Wabash River in the central portion of the state, the city of Lafayette, IN is relatively small compared to most cit-ies that incorporate tunnels into their combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems. The original CSO plan for the city was to replace two aging lift stations that were built in the 1950s. The original con-cept was to build a new sewer using conventional cut-and-cover construction to eliminate one of the lift stations ? the Parking Lot Lift Station ? and build a new regionalized one at the location of the Pearl River Lift Station. The initial sewer design was sized just to handle the flow that would eliminate the Parking Lot Lift Station. The planning for this project was being developed as part of the city?s CSO long-term control plan (LTCP) that focused on reducing the overflows from the city?s 14 overflow points. However, during the development of the CSO LTCP, a major industrial user indicated it would be increasing its flows to the system, which required additional conveyance capacity to meet the city?s CSO LTCP. After reviewing the design concepts with city representatives during the planning phase of the project, the mayor indicated that he wanted to minimize impacts to downtown businesses; therefore, trenchless alternatives were considered. The last piece of the puzzle that drove the project away from a small diameter pipeline was discovered during a flow monitoring program to collect flow data for the CSO LTCP project. This study revealed a major restriction in the 100-year-old Pearl River Trunk Sewer, located beneath four active railroad tracks. To eliminate this flow restriction, provide more overflow storage and reduce the impact to local businesses, a new 2.7- to 3.6-m- (9- to 12-ft-) diameter tunnel sewer became the most viable solution.

Como parte de los estudios línea base realizados por MWH Perú S.A. para el proyecto aurífero Chucapaca de las Canteras del Hallazgo en el distrito de Ichuña de la región Moquegua, Perú, se investigó el origen de boro, alta salinidad y otros componentes que perjudican la aptitud de los ríos Ichuña y Tambo para irrigación y otros usos. En este sentido, se encontró que la calidad de agua es perjudicada principalmente por altas concentraciones de sodio, entre otros, precipitándose como hidróxidos de estos metales debido al pH neutro en el río. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la relación de este impacto químico con los manantiales entre el Cerro Chucapaca y el cañón del Río Ichuña/ Alto Tambo, ubicados al Norte de Moquegua, donde presentan la característica distribución de diferentes tipos de aguas volcanogénicas sobre un sistema de convección hidrotermal de agua meteórica profunda reciclada, calentada y movida por una cámara magmática andesítica que aporta calor y gases.

Headrace Tunnels and parts of the Access Adit Tunnels of Kárahnjúkar Hydropower project, KAR-14, in Iceland will be excavated using three full-face Robbins Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). TBM sizes range from 7.23 to 7.63 meters in diameter and the total headrace tunnel length is approximately 40 km. The crushed rock is transported on conveyor belts to disposal areas near each Adit. The estimated average excavation rate is approximately 25 meters per day per machine. Electricity will begin to flow in April 2007, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2009. This paper is divided into four sections. In the PROJECT OVERVIEW section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drives is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes in the TBM OPERATION section with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

The goal of a mine is to produce ore at the lowest possible cost with due regard to safety of pemonnel and equipment. The mining process consists of a number of discrete operations such as planning, drilling, blasting,excavation, transportation and crushing. These processes are interrelated and cannot be considered as separate activities when optimising output and minimising cost. In order to optimise the global costs it may therefore be necessary to increase cost in one area such as blasting design and management beyond the norm.

Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling is used to research the complex flow structures that exist in a hydrocyclone. By simulation of a two phase (water and air) flow system, the internal flow and multiphase interactions are investigated. The suitability of CFD modelling as a design tool is further evaluated by examining the effect of varying device dimensions. Three hydrocyclone geometries, used in previous studies, are specified. A transient simulation approach, which employs the Reynolds Stress Model as turbulence model and the Volume of Fluid model as multiphase model, is followed. Over ten million pounds of explosives are used daily to blast rock in mines, quarries and construction projects throughout the United States. Despite the immense volume of explosives used, serious incidents involving the legal use of explosive materials are rare. Unfortunately, when incidents arise they are well publicized, whereas the great majority of blasting projects-even the most challenging ones—quietly occur without incident or public recognition. Although unfair, media coverage focuses on incidents and/or accidents, and as a result skews the public’s perceptions of our industry. These negative perceptions about blasting profoundly effect our work. Most apparent are the community groups who organize to fight blasting work. However, other impacts are more insidious and have long-term effects on our industry. For instance, planning engineers or government agencies often prohibit blasting to avoid the public’s adverse reaction or because of general fear of blasting impacts. Ironically, as regulations and specifications continue to curtail our industry, the net effect is an increase in the cost of rock excavation. As taxpayers, we suffer needlessly by paying more for government funded construction projects. As blasting professionals we are additionally penalized through loss of work.

Direct mass spectrometric determination of alcohols in the presence of hydrocarbons has not been possible because of the similarity of hydrocarbon and alcohol mass spectra. Experiments have demonstrated that by converting the alcohols to their trimethylsilyl derivatives, characteristic mass spectra are obtained free of interference from hydrocarbon ion fragmentation. Hexa- methyldisilazane is the reagent selected for the conversion, An improved method of preparing the reagent is given, Mass spectrometric determination of alcohols as trimethylsilyl ethers now is not only possible without prior separation from other materials, but the range of the room-temperature mass spectrometer is also extended to include the C10 alcohol region. Water does not interfere because it is converted to hexamethyldisiloxane, which has its own distinctive mass spectral peak, Experience indicates that other compounds such as glycols, amines, and phenols probably could also be determined by mass spectrometry of their trimethylsilyl ethers. Studies on the similar detemination of phenols in coal oils have been started, When mass spectrometry is not available, gas-liquid chromatography of alcohols before and after their conversion to the trimethylsilyl derivatives probably could be performed. The preparation and properties of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of 23 alcohols, 2 glycols, 3 amines, and 1 mercaptan are detailed. The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on the ignition of methane-air mixtures by sparks caused by frictional impact of aluminum alloys on rusted steel at typical coal mine fan speeds. The objectives were to establish the incendivity of aluminum alloys under these conditions, to investigate differences between aluminum alloys, and to evaluate substitute materials for the aluminum-steel combination. With a specially designed apparatus, three commercial aluminum casting alloys and a number of experimental aluminum alloys were tested for incendivity of the frictional impact against rusted steel in flammable methane-air mixtures. All aluminum alloys tested produced some ignitions. Of the experimental alloys, the harder alloys and those containing silicon tended to be more incendive than the others. With the normal experimental conditions, constructional steel, stainless steel, brass, and plastic did not cause ignition of methane-air mixtures in frictional impact against rusted steel. Some ignitions occurred with constructional steel at high speed in more flammable gas mixtures enriched with oxygen. From these findings, it is suggested that constructional material combinations other than the aluminum-steel combustion would minimize this inc endive hazard. A detailed description is given of previous research, and comparison is made with present results where appropriate.

A joint effort by the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)3was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's in the fifth phase of testing from mid-1993to early 1996. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS) at PRC. These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily.

South Africa and Australia are the biggest suppliers of zircon sand to the international zirconium industry. However neither South Africa nor Australia is well known for zircon beneficiation. Geratech Zirconium Beneficiation Ltd (GZB) continued with additional research on sodium hydroxide (NaOH) cracking of zircon sand during 2002-2003. In 2003 GZB started extracting zirconium from zircon sand by means of NaOH cracking on a commercial scale. Experience has shown that temperature profile and atmospheric control inside the furnace is crucial for the beneficiation of zircon sand. Silica carryover to zirconium chemicals could result if a high temperature is used. Once the sodium silicate is extracted from the sodium zirconate and dissolved in hydrochloric acid, two distinct routes can be followed to precipitate various zirconium chemicals. The most common route is to precipitate zirconium oxychloride crystals (ZOC), with subsequent purification from all contaminants (crystal route). Less known is the process (liquid route) that involves the direct precipitation of zirconium basic sulphate (ZBS). This route will yield a less pure product, with contaminants such as silica and titanium. An important factor in this route is the prevention of silica gel formation, which could hamper final product filtration. For applications like paint drying (zirconium octoate) or antiperspirants (zirconium hydroxychloride) low levels of contaminants have no effect on the final product. The advantage of the liquid route is fewer production stages compared to the crystal route. The disadvantage of the liquid route is that the market for the products will be significantly smaller. The optimum solution could be a plant design that could cater for both routes. Another example of an application of zirconium chemicals is the use of ammonium zirconium carbonate (AZC) in the paper industry. Zirconium basic carbonate (ZBC) is dissolved in ammonium carbonate to produce AZC solution. AZC is used mainly in European countries in the paper industry. For example, carton boxes were initially produced with formaldehyde as the binder, however, it has now been replaced with AZC since formaldehyde is considered toxic. AZC reacts with the cellulose fibres in the paper to act as the binder. The resulting product is not toxic, and printing ink dries very quickly due to the porous paper structure. Other applications of zirconium chemicals involve the use of acid zirconium sulphate tetrahydrate (AZST), zirconium orthosulphate (ZOS), potassium zirconium carbonate (KZC), and zirconium hydrous oxide (ZHO). Fluoride-based zirconium chemicals like zirconium tetra-fluoride (ZrF4) and hexafluoro-zirconic acid (H2ZrF6) are used in the aluminium industry. Zirconium oxide (Zr02) can be produced from any of the abovementioned precipitated chemicals via a high-temperature decomposition process. The physical properties of such oxides can differ tremendously, depending on the final application. The fired density of sanitaryware is typically 5.8 g/cm3, compared to milling media at >6.1 g/cm3. The required fired density is achieved by controlling the precipitation and decomposition conditions for these two oxides. The same applies to stabilized and mixed oxides, for example where zirconium oxide acts as an oxygen carrier in fuel cells.
