Amid some of the worst economic conditions that the mining industry has been faced with in more than a decade, the mood among the large crowd at the 114th Annual Northwest Mining Association?s annual meeting was surprisingly upbeat. More than 2,200 attendees showed up at John Asuaga?s Golden Nugget Casino in Reno, NV for the conference held Dec. 1-5. And more than 200 companies exhibited in 240 spaces, including SME and the Minerals Information Institute. The number of attendees and exhibitors were the most for the conference in more than 10 years. The conference was held in Reno/Sparks for just the second time in its illustrious history but began under the cloud of global financial turmoil. Prior to, and during the conference, the industry news headlines were grim, to say the least. An alarming number of mine plans and expansions had been put on hold; hundreds of miners across the United States had been or were in the process of being laid off; commodity prices were falling and some of the biggest mergers in the industry fell through while miners around the world put the brakes on to take a wait-and-see approach. It was a painful time for many, but the downsizing actions taken by many mining companies was exactly what needed to happen, according to Industry Outlook Luncheon featured speaker Frederick Sturm. He is the executive vice president and chief investment strategist and member of Mackenzie?s Investment team. He has earned a reputation as one of Canada?s leading investors in natural-based companies and he also manages the Ivy Global Natural Resource Fund in the United States Sturm said that the mining industry has fallen hard and that he expects it to bounce back quickly, before falling hard again. In these tough times, he said, the companies that have pulled back on production early are doing the right thing in the long run.

Reconnaisance samples of reported beryllium occurrences in Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Oregon were chemically and spectroscopically tested in a mobile laboratory. The two predominant types of occurrences were green beryl associated with Cretaceous intrusions and disseminated aquamarine associated with Tertiary intrusions. Although the beryllium content of known deposits in the Northwest is too low for economic development at present, total submarginal-grade beryllium resources in pegmatites are estimated to be 570,000 to 1,870,000 tons containing 0.024 to 0.167 BeO. A potential source of 500,000 to 700,000 tons of beryllium-bearing tactite in Idaho and Montana averages 0.033 to 0.080 percent BeO.

The need to increase ore recovery and pillar stability caused the Magmont Mine staff to investigate the use of sandfill to accomplish both tasks. The use of hydraulically stowed classified mill tailings as a subsidence preventative will be discussed as well as the use of sandfill in pillar recovery and as a part of the regular mining cycle.

The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag compositions. The present report deals with the CaF2-Y203 system for which solidus and liquidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. The information is presented as the phase diagram. All specimen compositions were blended from high-purity materials and encapsulated in Mo or Pt20Rh prior toheat treatment. Liquidus temperatures were determined by ceramographic examination of heat-treated and quenched specimens. Solidus temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis and by electron microprobe analysis of quenched specimens. Terminal solid solubilities were derived by parametric methods. The peritectic system was found to be pseudobinary due to the formation of yttrium oxyfluoride at temperatures near the liquidus. The peritectic point occurs at 7 mole pct Y203 and 1,438° ± 5°C. The terminal solid solubility of Y203 in CaF2 decreases from 7 mole pct at 1,438° C to 1 mole pct at 1,100° C, and the solubility of CaF2 in Y203 decreases from 9.5 to 7 mole pct over the same temperature interval.

West Virginia's basic coal mining regulatory programs are not unique when compared to Federally approved programs implemented by other coal producing states. In fact, the language in The West Virginia Energy Act governing subsidence mirrors that written in the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act as well as other states' statutes. Certain legal and administrative issues, how¬ever, combine to make West Virginia's regulation of surface subsidence a singular approach.

"An investigation into pillar cutting was carried out at a platinum mine on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The focus was on crush pillar design and implementation in order to ultimately improve the compliance percentage for pillar cutting. The major findings from the investigation suggest that the pillar cutting problem lies with the implementation of the design rather than the design itself. Observations of the practical issues underground that prevent good pillar cutting were made. After these issues had been identified, recommendations to rectify these problems and a few other issues identified during the investigation were provided. The recommendations are aimed at improving the pillar cutting compliance and reducing the likelihood of pillar bursts or pillar runs, which will ultimately create a safer mining environment. When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and Mineral Processing Systems (MPSI) merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare design pro¬cedures and the research upon which they were based. Several semiautogenuous (SAG) mill analyses are compared using Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then used in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria. Given the opportunity to compare the total philosophies and methods of several companies involved in the design and fabrication of grinding mills, it was important to first develop the comparison method and ground rules. One option was to compare analytical methods by details such as numerical techniques and accuracies. However, this option was discarded in favor of a more general approach. The question that was finally posed was in two parts. Given an identical mill requirement: • What would be the difference in the analytical design result, and to what aspect of the analytical process could this difference be attributed? • What would be the difference in approaches to obtaining the final hardware in subcontracting, both in specifying and Quality Assurance surveillance? By using this comparative approach, questions of relative conservativeness and reliability would automatically be answered.

A pilot steel ladle injection facility designed to assist in the production of high quality steels suitable for use in pipelines has been built and commissioned at the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant at Port Kembla Works.The plant design and the injection procedure are described.The performance of the unit and some metallurgical results are discussed in terms of the addition to the steel ladle of various quantities of calcium silicide and a lime based material. The effects of these additions on sulphur content and inclusion morphology and hence on steel ductility are also presented. The influence of ladle lining on desulphurisation is illustrated.On the basis of the experience gathered in the pilot plant a permanent and more sophisticated injection facility has been designed.

With the expansion of magnetite projects in Australia has come the opportunity to take advantage of newer technologies that were not necessarily available when the magnetite industries of North America and Europe were maturing. One of these technologies is the IsaMill, originally developed for the economic treatment of ultra-fine grind (UFG) duties of Mount Isa Mines. As understanding of the IsaMill has increased, so too has the ability to process coarser feeds while maintaining the same energy efficiency advantage and tight product size distribution that originally made the IsaMill so attractive. In the case of magnetite the hard non-elastic ceramic grinding media is ideally suited to the grinding duty when compared to steel grinding media. The centripetal separator and naturally steep product size distribution curve provide a mill discharge that maximises the critical concentrate grade. This paper analyses the effect of the IsaMill grinding technology on the full-scale Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) magnetite operation along with pilot and lab scale demonstrations of optimisation. Issues encountered and the solutions to maximise the mill throughput and quality are examined in an effort to promote better understanding across the industry. Successful mineral exploration is the lifeblood of the mining industry. Contrary to what the environmental lobby would have the world believe, the industry is replacing the metals it is extracting. The reserve base has not changed significantly in 20 years (Fig. 1.) Mineral exploration is a research activity. First there is the idea, the vision or the intuitive thought. The experiments follow. These involve repeated phases of data gathering, data interpretation and concept testing through drilling. For many companies, exploration is the main investment in scientific research. Each mineral exploration experiment may involve years of costly work. Despite the improving tools of science and technology, the investment remains high-risk. Only the promise of high rewards, or desire to survive as a mining company, will stimulate the necessary commitment and level of investment. Confidence that an economic return can be achieved, confidence in the science and technology being applied and confidence in the people involved are the foundations upon which successful mineral exploration is built (Woodall, 1984). The challenges facing the explorationist in the 1990s fall into two categories: - the challenge to make the activity economic; and - the challenge to make the activity socially and, therefore, politically acceptable.

Mine sealing programs for the alleviation of acid mine drainage were begun by the Federal Government in the '30's. As part of an acid mine research project to The Ohio State University, a field test was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of mine seals for reducing mine acid. Details of the tests made at the McDaniels mine show the feasibility of air-sealing and flooding an acid-producing drift coal mine. Work by the University continues. The Federal Government undertook in the early thirties an extensive mine sealing program for the alleviation of acid mine drainage. In the states of West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania many general summaries have been made on this program but no critical evaluation with supporting data has been found on the effectiveness of mine seals for reducing mine acid. Because of this it was decided to undertake a field testing program as part of an acid mine research project of the Engineering Experiment Station, The Ohio State University. The objective of this phase of the project was to develop and install a field research laboratory for acid mine drainage studies. Specifications for such a mine laboratory were developed and resulted from the following considerations: 1) Size and preservation—the test mine shou1d be of limited size to permit frequent and detailed examinations; it should be in a reasonably sound condition to permit safe entry. 2) Isolation—the mine should be physically separated from all other mines. 3) Openings—a minimum number would be desirable to reduce the sealing problem. 4) Structure—the mine especially near the openings should be structurally sound. 5) Acid production—the mine should be producing significant quantities of acid. After considerable searching, the McDaniels mine was selected in the Hocking coal field in Vinton County just above Lake Hope State Park in southeastern Ohio. The small drift mine in the middle Kittaning coal consisted of two small rooms with one mine opening about 6 ft above a seasonal stream bed. Before it was finally decided to seal the mine, a short study was made of the acid drainage over several months. Fig. 1 shows a plot of acidity (milligrams per liter), flow (gallons per minute), and acid production (pounds per day) vs time over the sampling period. "A reliable source of water of an acceptable quality is vital to the success of any mineral processing plant using wet methods. For Cerro Verde, a new 108,000 t/d copper mill in southern Peru, the main source of raw water is the Chili River. The Chili River is heavily contaminated with raw sewage, industrial wastewater and agricultural runoff, and can also receive high sediment loads during the rainy season. The initial water treatment plant could not supply design flows of water due to the exceptionally poor water quality. Problems with treated water quality caused significant difficulties with water consuming equipment, such as the plant cooling systems. This paper details the Cerro Verde water system and changes from design through to start up from a mineral processing perspective.INTRODUCTIONMining, and mineral processing in particular, is a water intensive activity. Improving water system design and practice are key strategic requirements in moving toward a more sustainable mining industry. This case study forms a basis for ongoing research into water use and reuse at mines and mineral process plants, conducted by AJ Gunson, under the supervision of Dr. Bern Klein and Dr. Marcello Veiga at the University of British Columbia. The case study material was gathered through involvement with the design, startup, and redesign of the Cerro Verde water system.Cerro Verde is a low-grade copper porphyry mine, located near the city of Arequipa in southern Peru, at an elevation approaching 2,800 m. In 1972, one of the world’s first copper Solvent Extraction – Electrowinning (SX/EW) facilities was built on the site, processing oxide ore from two main open pits. In 2004, the operator, Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV), approved a 108,000 t/d expansion project to process sulfide ore reserves through a new concentrator plant. The plant was designed under extremely tight schedule and capital constraints, with a mandate to intentionally avoid any overdesign."

Some form of technical library is a necessity for every metallurgical plant, but its form and scope will vary with the conditions of each case. In its simplest form, it may consist of one or two mining journals and a few text books distributed amongst the staff. Again, it may be a separate establishment controlled by a clerk, the technical staff necessarily making its own research into the literature available. A still more elaborate organisation may be established both to supply information when requested and to keep the operating staff in touch with current matters of interest, and the library service of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia is of this character.The necessity for such a service is due to several facts. The Company's interests are scattered over three States. Most of its staff members are remote from: good public library facilities and they have few opportunities for exchanging ideas verbally with other metallurgists and engineers. Then, too, the process of recovering zinc by electrolysis, is a young art of which the physical and chemical bases were far from fully known at the time the: Risdon plant was established. Most of the zinc produced is sold abroad, and this unsheltered industry can afford to miss no technical or economic development which may promote its efficiency. Add to these facts the geographical isolation of the Commonwealth and the case for an adequate library is complete.

The preeipitation of dissolved lead from a strong brine by metallic iron is a chemically controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is sensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature. The precipitation of dissolved silver is a diffusion controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is insensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature.INTRODUCTIONLead and silver sulphates can be extracted from electrolytic zinc plant tailings, or residues, by leaching with strong brine solutions, the lead and silver going into solution as complex chlorides. One of the methods which can then be used to recover the dissolved lead and silver is to precipitate them with metallic iron. The deposition reactions which take place are of the type Pb++ Fe - Fe++ Pb............ (a)To fit such a method of precipitation successfully into a practical flowsheet it is necessary to have some knowledge of the kinetics of the various reactions, Le. to know how the precipitation rates vary with temperature, brine and metal concentrations, and so on. Reaction rates are also needed to design suitable precipitation vessels. However, when examining the possibility of using a brine leaching process to extract the lead and silver from the residue produced at the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, it was found that, although the use of metallic iron to recover lead and silver from the pregnant brine had been reported by Ralston (1924) and by TrumbulI, Hardiek and Lawford (1948), very little was known about the precipitation reactions. "The Strathcona Concentrator operations, the application of control systems in the crushing, flotation and tailing fill sections, and current and future computer control concepts are described in this paper.The computer has been used for reporting and monitoring roles and operating the on-stream analyzer since start up of the mill in 1968, while over the past twenty months, it has been used for process control. The systems which have been developed include:1. The blending of pentlandite concentrate with pyrrhotite concentrate to produce a special product of constant nickel analysis.2. The blending of cement with tailing fill to produce backfill of consistent cement content.3. The supervisory control of xanthate, frother and pH to the flotation circuits to maintain the nickel copper concentrate grade within narrow limits.IntroductionThe Strathcona Concentrator is currently treating 7,200 tons per day of an ore which contains nickel associated with the minerals pentlandite (28 -32% Ni) and pyrrhotite (0.3 -1.0% Ni). The ratio of the nickel minerals varies from 4 to 15 parts of pyrrhotite to 1 part of pentlandite over the orebody. The production of a high grade concentrate re4uires the separation of this small quantity of .oentlandite from the much greater proportion of pyrrhotite and gangue and is complicated by the presence of two pyrrhotite minerals differing in nickel content, floatability and magnetic susceptibility."

"What affects and influences one’s perspective of the mining and metallurgical industries?One’s perspective of the industry we work in changes over time as a function of our experience as well as from the interaction we have with colleagues locally and probably even more so with those internationally. Furthermore, the ever-changing environment continues to impact the context in which one sees things. Living mostly in South Africa through its changes in the past fi fty years but also having the opportunity to travel extensively and work on projects abroad adds an invaluable richness to this more global perspective. One of the greatest challenges is how best to use this experience to endeavour to support the many potential opportunities in southern as well as sub-Saharan Africa. However, one has also to face the realities of how the best interests of the country and its peoples are sadly often not well served for various unfortunate reasons. Investment, education, regional stability, and good governance are some of the most critical considerations for the prosperity and survival of the region.The mining and metallurgical industry in southern and sub-Saharan Africa changed significantly during the post-colonial and apartheid eras as a result of global and regional developments that have impacted the ownership of businesses, the technologies used, and products produced in a manner that was not envisaged even fi fty years ago. Southern Africa’s mining and metallurgical industry has progressed from one based mostly on diamonds and gold in the late 19th century to a much more diverse one that involves the production of a variety of other precious, base, and ferrous metals and minerals as well as coal and industrial minerals. The infrastructure and manufacturing capacity was largely developed to meet the needs of this industry during its growth phases, but even though the dynamics have changed there is still a need for more efficient and effective support systems in the region."

Copper anodes generated from copper scrap are relatively rich in Sn, Zn and Fe. Because of the presence of oxygen, only trace amounts of Sn occur in solid solution in the copper crystals. Thus, Sn occurs mainly as SnO2, Cu-Sn-Ni oxide and Sn-Ni-Zn oxide in the copper anodes, and Zn and Fe occur mainly as minor constituents in the Sn-Ni-Zn oxide and Cu-Sn-Ni oxide. During electrorefining, these oxide species are liberated from the copper anodes and report directly to the anode slimes. The trace amounts of Sn present in solid solution in the copper crystals dissolve but reprecipitate as Sn arsenate or a Sb-As-Sn-O phase. Accordingly, high Sn contents in copper anodes do not lead to elevated Sn concentrations in the electrolyte.

The Belize economy recorded modest growth during 1980; the growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in real terms was between 1% and 2%. At current prices, the 1980 GDP reached $108 million2. This output was largely attributed to the performance of a few industries, mostly nonminerals. Such performance improved significantly the balance of payments situation by reducing the deficit from $19 million in 1979 to $4 million in 1980. The rate of inflation was an estimated 18% in 1980 and would have been greater if not for a conservative monetary policy and price control on a number of essential items. Expert earnings increased $43 million, or 50%, from the 1979 level. After increasing more than 25% in 1979, imports increased only 6% in 1980 to a level of $141 million owing to the decline in investment and stabilization of petroleum prices. The balance of trade deficit was $9.8 million in 1980, a marked improvement from the 1979 level of $45.1 million. The mineral output for Belize accounted for only a fraction of 1% of the GDP. Such activity was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were primarily used in construction of the Northern Highway between Orangewalk and Belize City. Mineral resources are deficient or nonexistent in Belize for the majority of metals and nonmetals, although the Government and others continue to believe that petroleum must exist in Belize. The proximity to Mexican oilfields and the growing finds in the Peters area of Guatemala support this expectation. The Bulyanhulu Mine, Tanzania is constantly trialing ideas for improvements in the drill and blast process. The project work has resulted in a large number of choices in explosive type and charging methods being available for blast design. Interestingly, though booster sensitive bulk emulsion had been introduced to the site to reduce dilution, better results were being obtained from reduced charge columns (decoupled columns of poured anfo in 50mm pvc pipe) and pneumatically loaded anfo upholes, which had been traced. In order to compare the explosive type and charge up-methods, an explosives comparison trial was performed.
