Focal depths of 15 tectonic earthquakes and 9 mine-related events were determined for South Africa using data recorded by the South African National Seismograph Network. These earthquakes and events were relocated by means of the Hypocenter program using direct P-waves (Pg) , critically refracted P-waves (Pn) , and first-arrival S-waves for the magnitude range 3.6 ?? ML ?? 4.4. Focal depths were first determined by means of the minimum root mean square (RMS) of the differences between the measured travel times and those predicted using the velocity model. The depths for tectonic earthquakes had a 2 km ?? D ?? 10 km range and an average depth and standard deviation of 6.9 ± 2.3 km. Depths for minerelated events ranged over 0 km ?? D ?? 7 km, averaging 3 ± 2.3 km. Next, arrival times for the additional regional depth phases sPn , PmP, sPmP, and SmP were measured. Focal depths were re-determined for the relocated epicentres, with the minimum variance (i.e. spread) of the differences between the measured travel times and travel times predicted by means of the Wentzel, Kramer, Brillouin, and Jeffreys (WKBJ) method for synthetic waveform modelling. Depth ranges were 4 km ?? D ?? 7 km (average 5.9 ± 1.2 km) and 1 km ?? D ?? 4 km (average 2.4 ± 1.2 km) for tectonic and mine-related events, respectively. The derived depths were verified for one tectonic earthquake with synthetic-to-recorded-waveform fits using the WKBJ synthetic seismogram software for the abovementioned regional phases. The focal mechanism parameters for this earthquake source were obtained from the National Earthquake Information Centre. Focal depths were estimated for nine stations by visually comparing synthetic waveform phases with recorded waveforms, ranging from 5 km to 8 km.

The general nature of the special constructional features that are required to provide safety from explosion hazards on machines approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines is fairly well known to mining men who are at all interested in safety. These requirements are outlined in the schedules, under the provisions of which the investigations of such machines are conducted. Also, the method of conducting inspections and. tests of such machines has been described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. A more detailed knowledge of the special safety features of a particular machine is often useful and sometimes essential for inspectors, safety engineers, maintenance men, and engineers in selecting machines for a particular application. Three bulletins that give information of this nature have been published by the bureau, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotives and Power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 382, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) system utilization is a critical factor for predicting machine performance. The process of estimating machine performance, including rate of penetration (ROP) and machine utilization (U) must incorporate an understanding of site geology, TBM specifications and site management. The study herein presents a preliminary analysis of the different activity time and downtime components from hard rock TBMs at two project sites to evaluate their impact on machine utilization. A comparison of crew experience, first between shifts and then between projects is included to analyze its effect on utilization and downtime. This work presents the sensitivity of the utilization factor to selected activities in the projects and the impact of geology and site set-up/logistics on machine performance.

IN concentrating mills, where several millerals are recovered for realisation in more than one product, various systems are used to express the relative economic value of the work done, and, in the hope that it may prove of use to other operators, the writer will describe a system which, in his opinion, is more complete than any other that he has seen published.The controlling factor in all mill work must be based on the economic result represented by the greatest margin possible between the realizable value of the products and the cost of obtaining same.From a mill-man's point of view these are affected by the following factors:1. Metal contents of ore.2. Grade of products.3. Recoveries.4. Working costs.The grade of ore milled is usually outside the mill-man's control, but this may exercise a considerable influence on the grade of his products, metal recoveries, and revenue per ton of ore. Higher grades or recoveries may be obtained by using a more expensive process, or by additional grinding or reagents, and the economic comparison can only be arrived at by obtaining an analysis showing the monetary value of each variation within the possible limits.In the system to be described, the value of unit variations of metal contents of the ore, grade of products and recoveries are calculated in terms of a monetary unit per ton of ore with the returning charges ruling, and any suitable metal prices. "Golden Bear Operating Company Ltd. (GBOC) was a joint venture between Chevron Minerals Ltd. and North American Metals Corp. that was formed for the development of the Golden Bear Project. The mine is located at Muddy Lake, Western British Columbia, approximately 80 km northwest of Telegraph Creek and 135 km west of Dease Lake (see Figure 1). Road access to the mine was developed by Golden Bear and consists of a radio controlled 155 km gravel road originating at highway 114.A feasibility study was completed in 1987 and project approval was finalized in 1988 with Golden Bear issuing a ""Request For Proposal"" for detailed engineering in May 1988. Golden Bear also commenced negotiating with vendors at this time for the supply of the two principal process equipment packages: the dry grinding and classification system and the whole ore roaster package.Process plant engineering and plant construction was completed in October 1989 with plant startup commencing in November 1989. Two months into the commissioning phase it became apparent that the plant, as designed, would not achieve the anticipated production targets.Kilborn Engineering Pacific were subsequently contracted by GBOC to review and modify the plant design, assist the operating personnel with plant commissioning and startup and provide operator training.This Paper describes some of the problems encountered during the startup and the plant modifications incorporated to achieve design parameters."

The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4 km (6.5 mi) long, 14.4 m (47.5 ft)bored tunnel that will run under the City of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck Power Station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck Power Station by adding 500 m3 (17,657 ft3) of water per second through the tunnel. The paper describes the project in which the world’s largest hard rock TBM at14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter is being used to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a High Performance (HP) Main Beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area. The paper will also discuss the optimization of the TBM system as the tunnel advances through the varying geology. In June 2004 the Ontario Government announced that Ontario Power Generation(OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls—the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill and blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4 km (6.5 mi) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG announced the selection of Strabag AG of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP Project at a price of CAN $600 million. In September 2005, Strabag A.G. selected The Robbins Company of Solon, Ohio to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4 m (47.5 ft) diameter High Performance state-of-the-art Main Beam Hard Rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. In order to meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be supplied as “ready to bore” within a 12 month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.

This technical note describes a problem with WANG82, a ventilation network analysis programme. The problem was highlighted by Renison Ltd when using the programme on large, complex networks. Under certain circumstances the programme produced incorrect results or failed to converge to a solution.

The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

This paper characterizes the copper cycle, that is, the flows of copper entering and leaving the African economy over a one-year period (1994). The major flows over the entire life-cycle of copper are examined; these include production (mining, milling and refining), fabrication of semi-products and manufacturing of finished products, use, and the waste management system. The results reveal that substantial amounts of copper (of order705 Gg/yr) are mined in Africa; of that amount, about 70 per cent is exported following processing, 18 per cent is utilized by African fabricators, and 12 per cent is discarded. The flows of copper products from African fabricators and product imports from other continents exceed product discards by large amounts. This difference, about 0.25 kg Cu/capita/yr on average, is added to in-use stock, largely as wire, plumbing tube, and in electronics. Some 65 per cent of the copper in discard flows is contained in electrical and electronic products, where it is relatively easy to collect and process for reuse. About a third of the copper discard flows known is recycled. The actual percentage is almost certainly higher because of informal (and unrecorded) recycling. Much of the remaining discarded copper is diluted into the municipal waste stream, where recovery and recycling are probably not economically justified. Underground limestone mines typically use the room-and-pillar method of mining in the generally flat-lying limestone formations. In some cases the dip may exceed 5° which can result in unique roof instability problems. Stability may be further exacerbated by the presence of horizontal tectonic stresses. Field studies and numerical model analyses are combined to assess the affect of the dip in various stress conditions. The results showed that where the horizontal tectonic stresses are sufficient to cause intact rock failure, increasing dip results in increased failure potential. The effect of the dip is greater when the maximum horizontal stress is parallel to the dip. Two case studies are presented and evaluated against the findings of stress analysis results. The study showed that the empirical rules of orienting headings parallel to the maximum stress are generally applicable to dipping excavations, except when mining in the up-dip direction. The importance of accurately determining the orientation of the maximum horizontal stress is emphasized because the window of favorable orientations relative to the stress is small.

Fire in a coal mine can be disastrous on many levels. In most cases, when a fire is detected, mining operations cease and all personnel are evacuated. Underground coal-mine fires are difficult to extinguish, can burn for a long time, and often result in an extended period of lost production. In a worst-case scenario, the mine is permanently sealed and abandoned, resulting in lost jobs, lost natural resources, and possible devastation of the local economy. In some cases, seals placed within the mine to isolate the fire could eliminate the need for sealing the entire mine and the subsequent extended delay in returning the mine to full operation. Previous attempts to place remote seals to extinguish mine fires in active mines have been largely unsuccessful. The West Elk mine experienced an underground fire in early 2000. The fire could not be accessed and extinguished from the active mine workings. A method of constructing seals remotely by drilling boreholes into the affected area was needed to help isolate and extinguish the fire. This paper describes the process by which remote seals were constructed that successfully isolated the fire and provided a means of extinguishing the fire by flooding the area with water. The period of lost production in the West Elk mine was considerably shorter than is typical in similar situations.

Financially troubled Charter Oil Co., joint owner of the refinery with Chevron Oil Bahamas Ltd., agreed in principle to have Chevron assume full ownership in return for canceling debts owed Chevron. Finalization of the agreement was pending at yearend. Burmah Oil Ltd. took more than a $30 million loss on the sale of its interest in South Riding Point Grand Bahama Transshipment Terminal to South Riding Point Terminal Holding Ltd.

Slurry pipelines are used in a number of countries to convey processed ore mixed with water over long distances from remote mine sites to ports or plants for further processing. In Egypt and Sudan, numerous mineral resources are scattered in remote areas. Through the years, Egyptian geologists have identified 268 sites for metallic ores and 386 sites for industrial nonmetallic minerals. A large portion of these sites are in the Eastern Desert in an area called the Nubian Shield. Similar sites are found in the Sudan where mining contributes to less than 1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). There are three important components of infrastructure needed to develop these resources ? power, water and transportation. While Egypt is able to satisfy 70 percent of its needs in iron ore from the Gadideh Mine in the Western Desert, it needs to expand its other resources to reduce imports heavily sedimented. Dredging of these sediments and transporting them by slurry pipelines would enhance an industry of bricks or agricultural development based on tailings technology often used in mining. This article explores the potential for slurry technology for opening new mines in the desert or recuperating the sediments of the Nile. The technology by itself would be new to both countries and would benefit from collaboration, particularly to de-silt the Nasser-Nubia Lake.

Rich Hill, also known as Weaver District No. 2, is among the most productive placer gold locations in Arizona. Located near Congress, AZ (Fig. 1), this district hosted major placer rushes in the 1860s and1930s. Those rushes were followed by an electronic metal detecting rush that started in the 1980s and continues today. Thousands of ounces of gold have been produced by these modern amateur and professional metal detectorists. Many of them see more gold in an afternoon than Nevada mine workers will ever see outside of the mill. Rich Hill discovery Inspired northeastward by Spanish legends, a party of 10 men left Yuma, AZ on April 1, 1863. Included in the group were Pauline Weaver (Fig. 2), Henry Wickenburg and Abraham Peeples. Wickenburg left the group near the Hassayampa River and discovered the Vulture deposit. The rest of the group arrived at the base of Rich Hill in late May. While drying antelope meat on the first day, a few of the men prospected a nearby creek bed and immediately found gold. In a couple of hours they picked up more than 2.8 kg (90 oz) of gold. The next day, four members of the party went searching for their horses and returned with news that a nearby hilltop was literally graveled with nuggets.

Copper production through smelting generates large volumes of material flows. As copper contained in ore becomes copper contained in concentrate to be fed into the smelting process, it leaves behind an altered landscape, sometimes mine waste, and always mill tailings. Copper concentrate, fluxing materials, fuels, oxygen, recyclables, scrap and water are in-puts to the process. Dust (recycled),gases — containing carbon dioxide(CO2) (dissipated) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) (mostly collected, transformed and sold) and slag (discarded or sold) — are among the significant process outputs. This article reports estimates of the flows of these input/output materials for a particular set of smelters studied in some countries. They include Chile (Altonorte, Caletones, Chagres, Chuquicamata, LasVentanas and Potrerillos), Japan(Naoshima, Onahama, Saganoseki,Tamano and Toyo), the United States(Garfield — Fig. 1 — Miami and Hayden) and Europe (Glogow I, Glogow II, Huelva, Norddeutscheand Ronnskar).

This paper gives a description of the methods of mining employed at North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W.GEOLOGICAL NOTESThe main Broken Hill lode occurs as a replacement of tightly folded pre-Cambrian sediments. Replacement has followed certain stratigraphical horizons and the main bulk of the ore is found where these have been packed into the noses of anticlinal and synclinal folds.Throughout the mine the ore-bearing folds pitch north fairly consistently at 45 degrees, as a result of which two favourable horizons in the same fold appear in plan as separate orebodies and these are referred to as the "Southern Orebody" and the "Northern Orebody" respectively.The general dip of the orebodies to the west is about 60 degrees. A typical sill is shown in the plan of the 1,400-ft level (Fig. 1).Both the hanging wall and footwall rocks throughout the mine are weak and, as a result, it is necessary that the hanging wall must be well supported after ore extraction, to prevent subsidence. The weakness in the footwall is confined to a narrow zone, approximately 60 feet in width.
