Most previous studies of coal flotation utilized chemically pure reagents. Since such reagents are not available in quantity, a study of various wmmercially available reagents as frothers was undertaken. Flotation procedures similar to those used in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were employed. The reagents used were compared on yield-selectivity-wst basis. The selectivity was found to be relatively constant with yields above 70% but the reagent cost varied greatly. The types of reagents available were compared. In the past, a number of papers have been written on the use of various reagents as coal flotation frothers. For the most part, these have been an attempt to correlate the intrinsic chemical and physical proper- ties of the reagents or reagent groups to the floata-bility of various fine coals. Because of the type or nature of evaluations made, chemically pure reagents were normally used. Generally, these reagents are unavailable in commercial quantities. Therefore, the results obtained with these reagents were usually limited in usefulness to the plant operator or metallurgist. This paper presents the results of a study in which commercially available forms of various reagents were used as flotation frothers. Flotation procedures which would conform in general to those employed in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were utilized. The objective of the test was to compare these reagents on yield-selectivity-cost basis, that is, 1) the yields obtained, 2) the ash levels obtained and 3) the reagent cost relating to these results. The Gippsland Basin, southeastern Australia, has an Upper Cainozoic history of episodic change of hydrology and the related environment, reflected in the geomorphology and surficial deposits of the onshore basin and the hydrodynamically controlled accumulations of petroleum of the offshore basin. Succeeding this episodic pattern, man through a number of activities, has had a sudden and major impact on the hydrology and the related environment. Activities include those directly affecting the groundwater system, such as extraction of fossil fuels with the consequent threat of land subsidence; irrigation and clearing of vegetation and the consequent effect of salinisation; change of land use and installation of septic tanks with resulting nitrate pollution; damming of streams and the consequent reduction in the frequency of floods with degradation of the biological Environment; de-snagging streams and construction of cutoffs with increased stream erosion, modifying wetlands including drainage, with the consequent degradation of their ecosystems; and increase in phosphate and nitrate inputs to the coastal lakes with the risk of their eutrophication.

Activities of COO in the three solid solution series COO-MgO, COO-MnO, and COO-"FeO" have been determined at 1200°C by equilibrating oxide samples with a metal phase (cobalt or a Co-Fe alloy) in atmospheres of known oxygen activities. The systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO are ideal, within limits of experimental error, whereas the system COO-"FeO" shows a slight positive deviation from ideality at the temperature of this investigation. KNOWLEDGE of activities of oxide components in solid solutions is necessary for the calculation of the cation distribution among coexisting oxide phases in many important metallurgical, ceramic, and geochemical systems. Very few activity-composition curves are available for such systems at the present time. A start on the prodigious job of obtaining such data has been made by studies of solid solutions with simple sodium chloride type structure containing NiO or "FeO" as a component.1-3 The present paper describes similar studies for solid solutions with sodium chloride type structure containing COO as a component. For the systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO, the activity solid solution is determined by the equation Here po and are the oxygen activities of the gas phase in equilibrium with the phase assemblages metallic cobalt plus oxide solid solution, and metallic cobalt plus pure COO, respectively. In the system CoO-"Fe07', the metal phase is a Co-Fe alloy rather than pure cobalt. In this case the activity of COO in the oxide solid solution is calculated from the equation where a& is the activity of cobalt in the metal phase. Because the system Co-Fe is close to ideal4 and the metal phase appearing in the present work contains less iron than cobalt even at the lowest COO concentrations of the oxide phases used may be set equal to N . It is indeed a rarity for a non-engineer, let alone a lawyer, to even be considered for a mining-related award, especially where that award is for significant contributions to technical progress in the mining and exploration sectors. So, when I was notified that I had received this award, I struggled for a topic that would meld the legal world that I operate in with the engineering driven world of exploration and extraction. The most exciting part of my job has always been the opportunity to absorb the technical details of the cases I work on and, in effect, translate them for a lay audience. Too often, I have found, lawyers, judges, legislators and yes, even regulators who lack a technical background simply give up trying to understand the details of the very conditions or processes that they are trying to describe and simply repeat phrases told to them by their client or by a retained expert.

The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

This paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Ltd.The North Mine orebodies occur in knots of minor folds on a simple limb structure which is itself highly folded, giving rise to two distinct orebodies pitching N. at av. 42° down to 2,920-ft. level, where the pitch steepens to near vertical as a result of complementary shear movement on the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.The lack of adequate marker beds and top and bottom relations makes the resolving of the complex structural environment of the orebodies most difficult.To test the deeper ground of each side of the De Bavay Fault on the 2,600-ft. level the footwall drive was extended 3,556 feet and over 20,000 ft. of drilling completed from three transverse fans, only one of which intersected the orebodies due to steepening of pitch.The problem of locating the North Mine orebodies N. of the DeBavay Fault remains speculative because the exact position of them S. of the fault is still unknown. Exploration beyond the fault in the search for ore had two lines of mineralization to consider, an eastern one through Cosgroves-Round Hill, long regarded as the continuation of the main lode, and a western one passing through Silver Hill Silver Peak.From surface 45,000 ft. of drilling was completed in five sections, establishing that the structure was dominantly synclinal with a flatdipping E. limb, the W. limb and adjoining structures being involved in the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone. Mineralization, though weak, was remarkably persistent but the economic mineralization exposed at surface has not persisted with any continuity.Deep exploratory drilling below the bottom level (3,370 ft.) has established high-grade ore to a depth of 4,095 ft. and also has proved its existence within the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Limited from the inception of the Geological Department in 1941 until the end of 1955. The Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma lead and zinc district, better known as the Joplin district, includes the mines in southwest Missouri and in those parts of Kansas and Oklahoma that are directly adjacent. (See PI. I.) This report of investigations carried on by the Bureau of Mines gives the methods used in mining and milling and indicates in some detail the conditions that affect the efficiency of those methods; it does not attempt to discuss the geology of the district, except incidentally, as this has been described in numerous reports by several geologists. Some of the more important recent publications are those of the United States Geological Survey by Smith and Siebenthal, a Bain, b and also those of the Missouri State geological survey by Buckley and Buehler." Other reports are those by Schmidt and Leonard," and Winslow,e of the Missouri geological survey, by Haworth and Crane,! of the Kansas geological survey, and by Jenney.g Although the lead and zinc ores are closely associated, the proportion of zinc ore mined at present is far greater than in former years. For this reason and because the losses in milling zinc ores are proportionately greater than in milling those of lead, the zinc ores are here given most consideration. Only the mines and mills actually examined and tested are discussed in detail, statements of results being restricted to the mines in general, with no special reference to anyone mine. Several mill tests were made to determine in a general way the efficiency of the milling practice in this district and to discover at what stage of the process the losses were greatest. Making these mill tests proved difficult,for, because of the arrangement of the mills and the necessity of estimating the tonnage treated, systematic mill testing and sampling can be done at only a few plants. Many tables giving results of mill tests and screen tests have been omitted because they would serve only to emphasize the important points shown by other data given. The writer has tried to bring out the possibilities of making certain improvements that would effect a greater saving, and has endeavored to avoid the use of technical terms and phrases in order that all statements may be clear and easily understood.

Water availability is essential for mining and minerals processing. To provide government and industry with recent data for water use planning and management, the Bureau of Mines canvassed a number of U.S. producers of nonfuel minerals to determine their water use in 1984. Data were analyzed and compared with previously published data in order to examine historical trends in water utilization in the nonfuel minerals industry and to estimate water requirements in the year 2000. Total water use in the domestic nonfuel minerals industry during 1984 was estimated at 2,267 billion gal, of which 571 billion gal was new water and 1,696 billion gal recirculated water. The largest users of water were the phosphate rock, iron ore, copper, sand and gravel, and crushed stone industries, together accounting for almost 90% of total used. More than one-half of all water was used in Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota. In the year 2000, total water use will amount to an estimated 2,679 billion gal, of which 810 billion gal will be new water and 1,869 billion gal recirculated water. Most of this water would be used in producing the foregoing suite of minerals,

THE Talisman mine is situated on the Waitawheta (pronounced Wytaffetta) river just above its junction with the Chinemuri (pronounced Chinnemurre) river near Karangahake, NZ. The explored reef-bearing portion of the claim includes the angleformed by the junction of the rivers and extends southwards for slightly over a mile (See Plate V.). The country is mountainous both rivers flowing through precipitous gorges.The trig. station on Karangahake mountain is almost directly above the workings on the Bonanza section and is 1680 ft. above river level, the adit from the gorge giving 1200 ft. of backs measured vertically. The officers of the N.Z. Geological Survey are engaged in a detailed survey of the Waihi district and the rocks of Karangahake are under examination. The rocks of the district are andesites and dacites much altered and silicified. One of these exhibits a columnar structure in the mass in the Waitawheta gorge near the surface workings on Taukani hill, also on the southern bank...

The economic success and growth of any metropolitan region depends on mobility. Today, mobility between New Jersey and New York is threatened by a transportation system that cannot meet 21st century travel demands. The transportation bottleneck created by the Hudson River threatens the viability of one of the world?s great centers of commerce and culture. Fortunately, there is a solution: The Access to the Region?s Core Mass Transit Tunnel. The US$8.7-billion Mass Tran-sit Tunnel?s (MTT) new two-track line will double commuter rail capacity under the Hudson and create a new, state-of-the-art cavern station in Midtown Manhattan, with wide platforms, high-speed escalators and other features to improve riders? travel experience. The capacity and other benefits of the MTT project will launch a new era of prosperity for the region, just as the Pennsylvania Railroad did almost 100 years ago when it built the existing two, single-track rail tunnels that now form the sole commuter rail link between New Jersey and New York. The existing tunnels run from North Bergen, NJ, under the Hudson River to Pennsylvania Station at 33rd Street in Manhattan. Construction on the MTT, the largest public works project in the United States, is scheduled to start this year and continue through 2017. The MTT is ready to go to construction thanks to a major commitment of financial, engineering, project management and other resources from NJ TRAN-SIT, New Jersey?s statewide mass transit agency, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bistate agency that operates the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and other major transportation facilities in New York and New Jersey. The project is also strongly supported by the state governments of New York and New Jersey, as well as that of New York City. The MTT is New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine?s number one transportation priority.

"Comparative tests of the conventional Turam survey configuration and an alternative configuration called the Tx-parallel configuration were conducted at the McClean uranium deposit in northern Saskatchewan. Both configurations detected the known conductors at the site but the alternative configuration demonstrated its particular effectiveness in the reconnaissance role. This effectiveness results from the fact that the length of Tx-parallel traversesis controlled only by the length ofthe transmitter and not by its power. In addition, the field strength along a Tx-parallel traverse is uniform unless the traverse approaches the end of the transmitter. This freedom from a strong gradient of the primary field along a Tx-parallel traverse eliminates the gradient-induced anomaly shifts which are common in conventional Turam operations. The locations of each of the McClean conductors, that were obtained from the Tx-parallel profiles, werein better agreement with the locations known from drilling than were the locations obtained from the conventional profiles. However, the conventional profiles gave better estimates of the conductance of the targets.The results obtained over the McClean conductors indicate that current gathering has a strong influence on Tx-parallel results with consequent unpredictable influence on depth and conductance estimates. However, the depth estimates obtained from the Tx-parallel data appear to be in good agreement with the known depth of the McClean south conductor. The Txparallel results provide shallow estimates of the depth of the McClean north conductor which suggest that the fracture zone above the graphitic conductor is a significant conductor as was also suggested by earlier VLF surveys.Comparison with the wide range of published geophysical test surveys for the McClean site showed that apart from the work required to lay the transmitter, the Tx-parallel mode of operation of a Turam exploration system is operationally very similar to a moving source Slingram type of survey. At the McClean test site, it provided the same depth of exploration as a conventionally deployed fixed loop transmitter."

The centrifugal elevator invented and patented by the writer is designed for the purpose of conveying the tailings of a gold dredge to such a distance that it shall not impede the dredging opperations. Formerly this was usually accomplished by means of a belt of buckets travelling round a ladder set at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, but this meant heavy wear and tear on the travelling buckets and the tumblers actuating them. The centrifugal elevator throws the tailings through the air to the required height and distance and it is manifest that during their flight from the elevator to the heap there is absolutely no wear and tear, only the attraction of gravity and the resistance of the air has to be overcome. All then there is left to he considered is how to throw the stuff with the minimun of prower and wear on the elevator.The elevator consists of a cam-shaped steel casting with a disc of mild steel plate on either side: These side plates project a few inches beyond the tips of the beaters, in order to prevent odd stones from straying in an undesired direction; they serve also to prevent extra large stones from reaching the beaters, for they slide off the rims into the water.

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operations in Labrador and Quebec, in Canada, is among the largest openpit mining complexes on a world wide basis. Since the 1981-82 recession, IOC has embarked on a comprehensive cost reduction and productivity improvement program in order to survive in the world iron ore market.This paper will outline the approach used in prioritizing the cost reduction items.IntroductionMuch of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Most producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectively. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept-Iles, Quebec.In the past decade the Iron Ore Company of Canada has been one of the largest producers of iron ore products in the world. Its pellets and concentrates as well as natural ores were sold in North America, Europe and the Far East. In 1981-82, sales, particularly in North America, went into a serious decline. For almost 30 years, the gospel IOC preached to employees was ""production, production!"" There were many innovations, and millions of dollars were spent on the biggest and best equipment, on research and development, on training and developing employees."

Mineral production was of little significance in the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a world-ranked producer of any mineral commodity during 1977. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited; however, reserves were sufficient to allow for much greater production, Economically, Bangladesh made some progress in 1977-782 in its struggle against poverty, underdevelopment, and rapidly increasing population. The gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8%, mainly owing to a 13% increase in food grain production, the key economic indicator in this highly agricultural nation. GDP at current prices dropped slightly in Fiscal Year (FY) 1976.77 to $6.6 billion3 and rose to $7.2 billion in FY 1977.78. The population rose from 81 million in FY 1975-76 to about 85 million in FY 1977-78, resulting in an increase of per capita GDP from $83 to $85 during the same period. The high annual population growth rate, over 3% in 1976 and about 2.8% in 1977, was recognized by the Government as the main problem facing the country. Average density was 525 people per square kilometer. A similar density would have the entire world population living within the continental United States.

"Although Canada has achieved one of the highest living standards in the world, people and organizations have, over the past decade, begun to question the cost and means of this achievement. Concern has been expressed about the degree of environmental disturbance arising from industrial activities which have greatly contributed to our increased living standards. These industries include hardrock mining, pit and quarry operations, hydro-electric schemes, various agricultural enterprises and urban land developments.In the construction and operation of the above industries many environmental problems arise because the natural vegetative land cover is destroyed or drastically disturbed. Disturbance may occur to such a degree that revegetation is di ffi cult, often it appears impossible. Portions of the environment around such industries remain aesthetically unacceptable and appear to offer little or no potential for future resource use in wildlife, recreation or agriculture.The general public cannot dissociate itself from the activities of the aforementioned industries. It has, over many years, accepted the benefits and conveniences arising from those activities. Despite this, the increasing level of public concern imposes upon industry a need to alleviate or repair past, present and future environmental disturbance. Therefore it is incumbent upon industry to modify present technology or develop new techniques which would allow the disturbed environment to be easily and rapidly repaired."

The Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shields designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., are recently more enthusiastically accepted by tunnel boring specialists. This company having built 1,000 tunnel shields utilizes its vast experience to resolve the problem to excavate through big boulders scattered in rather soft alluvial soil. Several types of EPB shields which can cope with large size boulders are described. Such shields are equipped with both drag bits and rolling disc cutters on the cutterheads. Previously removal of boulders has presented safety problems for workers while in the muck chamber, or venturing in front of the shield. This report describes the problem and how the equipment was modified to deal with the problem.

A method for the selection of the most suitable corrosion inhibitor for a particular system is given. The method involves the evaluation of surface passivity by means of copper ion displacement after the metal surface has been subjected to the corrosive atmosphere. The application of the method to the selection of suitable inhibitors for use in producing wells is described. Correlation with recognized laboratory tests has beet1 found to be good within the limitations of the test. The use of the test to evaluate inhibitor persistencc is described. INTRODUCTION Corrosion as it is associated with the industry shows wide variations in its qualitative as well as its quantitative aspects. This complicates the work of the corrosion engineer. In the past few years the efforts of the corrosion engineer have been further taxed by the large numbers of products being marketed as corrosion inhibitors by various manufacturers. These products are submitted to him together with a limited amount of data to support their use as inhibitors. The data are usually authentic and reliable yet all too often when these products are applied to an actual corrosive system the results are disappointing due to the ineffectiveness of the inhibitor and the corrosive system. The corrosion engineer must select a comparatively limited number of inhibitors for field trial from the large number available. The selection is usually made on the basis of a standardized laboratory test such as that adopted by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers or by field experience in an area; however, testing of this type is discouraging on large numbers of compounds, particularly in view of the specificity of environment. It has been an object of this work to devise a method which will allow the corrosion engineer to select the best inhibitor for a specific environment under field conditions. The test would of necessity be rapid and inexpensive. It would preferably eliminate the need for expensive and delicate instruments. STATEMENT OF THEORY The test as developed makes use of the fact that metal ions will be displaced from solution by metals having a more positive electrode potential. Thus, if an active iron surface is exposed to a solution of a copper salt, free copper will plate spontaneously on the iron surface as it is displaced from the salt solution by iron ions. If the iron surface is passified, as by coating with an insulating-type organic corrosion inhibitor, it is no longer capable of displacing the copper ions due to its own limited ionization. The result will be a change in the amount of copper plated upon exposure to a neutral copper salt solution. In practice it has been found possible to measure the magnitude of the alteration of the cell potential by determining the copper deposited on a standard iron surface under controlled conditions. This means that, as the film builds up, the resulting shift in the electrode potential tends to cause the iron surface to act more like a noble metal, resulting in a reduction in the cell potential to a point that copper will no longer plate spontaneously. Obviously, the salts of other metals such as silver, gold or platinum might be used for this operation; however, copper was selected because of the color difference of the plate, the comparatively low cost of copper salts and the ease of evaluation of the plated copper. Furthermore, its high cell potential provides a substantial driving energy. The determination of the copper is readily done colorimetrically by dissolving it in 5 per cent ammonium hydroxide solution containing 2 per cent potassium per-sulfate. The blue color of the copper ammonic complex ion so developed may be compared with standards prepared by dissolving known quantities of copper powder in the same reagent. In routine screening it is seldom desirable to determine the amount of copper plated. It is usually more important to determine the concentration of inhibitor required to prevent the plating of copper.
