"The goal of estimation is considered in the light of decision analysis. A simple example reveals the essential elements of decision-making in the face of uncertainty. A second example shows that these elements are also key features of many mining decisions. These two examples cause us to revive an old probabilistic notion that the goal of estimation should be to quantify what is unknown. The conditional probability distribution provides the complete statement of one's uncertainty. Once the conditional probability distribution has been established, one should retain as an estimate the value which minimizes some objective loss function. A third example shows how the ""best"" estimate depends on the chosen loss function. Current practice is almost exclusively based on the least squares method, which assumes a loss function which penalizes underestimation and overestimation equally. This is unfortunate not only because symmetry is an unrealistic assumption but also because mining offers a rare opportunity to state the loss function directly in terms of profitability. Both the theoretical framework and the practical tools exist to allow us to reconsider the conventional notion of the ""best"" estimate. IntroductionThis paper looks at estimation in the mining industry from the point-of-view of decision analysis. Virtually all decisions depend on estimates since few of the important parameters are ever known exactly. In this paper we will be referring mainly to the estimation of ore grades, though the approach discussed here is generally applicable to any decision in which relevant information is uncertain.In the first section we look at a very simple example of decision-making in the face of uncertainty. We will then tum to a mining example and see that the essential features of the simple example still pertain. From these two examples it will be clear that the decision analysis approach rests on two key concepts: the conditional probability distribution and the loss function. A third example demonstrates how different loss functions produce different ""best"" estimates from the same conditional probability distribution. In the final sections we willexamine the current practice of estimation in the mining industry. Though the tools for estimating the conditional probability distribution already exist, a change in the way we think about ""best"" estimates is needed. Very little attention is presently paid to the loss function even though it is readily available in many mining applications."

"High-speed motion pictures are an invaluable resource for blasting analysis. Whether processed by the human eye or a computer, this imagery can provide important insight into a blast and its effects.While certainly popular, traditional high-speed film cameras hamper this process. Instant feedback is not available since film requires developing and, relevant in the case of automated analysis, film isnot immediately compatible with a computer. With these facts in mind, a new high-speed video camera system, the SVCSOO, has been developed. The SVC500 combines the capabilities of a high-speed film camera, the convenience of a solid-state digital video camcorder, and the computing power of a ‘486 PC to provide a complete, standalone platform for high-speed image acquisition and analysis. This paper will describe the design, features, and use of the SVCSOO andcompare these with the analogous aspects of film cameras."

Part of the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine production is in the process of transitioning from the deep ore zone (DOZ) mine to the deep mill level zone (DMLZ) mine. The DMLZ mine is the next lift in the caving series and lies 500 m below the current DOZ footprint.In order to reduce the need for a very expensive additional ventilation system for the DMLZ mine, it was decided to reconfigure some infrastructure and upgrade the performance of the three existing DOZ mixed flow ventilation fans in situ, reducing the new fans required to two. This was far less costly than providing complete new installations.These fans are installed in individual underground chambers in DOZ mine exhaust drifts and connected to the DMLZ mine exhaust drifts system in 7 m × 7 m airways size, through sets of 6 m diameter by 500 m high raises.The upgrade process involved replacement of motors, fan shafts and bearings. The existing 1600 kW DOZ mixed flow fans are 3500 mm diameter and operate at a speed of 595 rev/min and were originally designed to deliver 390 m3/s at 3.3 kPa. Efficiency optimisation may be required at a later date.The upgraded DMLZ fans are required to deliver 425 m3/s at 3.7 kPa and it was necessary to increase in motor size and speed to 2200 kW at 710 rev/min. Although blasting is one of the most widely used methods for rock fragmentation, it has a major disadvantage in that it causes adjacent ground vibrations. Excessive ground vibrations can cause a wide range of problems, from nearby residents complaining to ecological damage. Prediction of blast-induced ground vibration is essential for evaluating and controlling the many adverse consequences of surface blasting. Since there are several effective variables with highly nonlinear interactions, no comprehensive model of blast-induced vibrations is available. In this study, the support vector machine (SMV) algorithm was employed for prediction of the peak particle velocity (PPV) induced by blasting at a surface mine. Twelve input variables in three categories of rock mass, blast pattern, and explosives were used for prediction of the PPV at different distances from the blast face. The results of 100 experiments were used for model-building, and 20 for testing. A high coefficient of determination with low mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was achieved, which demonstrates the suitability of the algorithm in this case. The very high accuracy of prediction and fast computation are the two major advantages of the method. Although the case study was for a large surface mining operation, the methodology is applicable to all other surface blasting projects that involve a similar procedure.

Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are refined raw materials and not manufactured products. The composition and properties of the grains are therefore fixed by nature. Specifications and assay certificates should take this into account by eliminating unnecessary provisions which only increase the time and cost of analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe raw material from which Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are isolated is beach sand on the coast of New South Wales and Southern Queensland. The principal current operations are in an area between Sydney and Brisbane.The sands consist principally of quartz particles, but they contain from 1 per cent to 50 per cent of a mixture of heavy minerals, including zircon, rutile, ilmenite, monazite, leucoxenic grains, chrome spinel, chromite, garnets, corundum, topaz, brown spinel, olivine, epidote, clinozoisite, tourmaline, magnetite, hematite, and cassiterite. The major components are zircon (25 to 60 per cent), rutile (25 to 50 per cent), and ilmenite (5 to 50 per cent).The so-called leucoxenic grains are not a definite mineral species but an alteration product of which the major components are titanium oxides and silica in varying proportions.Primary concentration is by gravity, using spirals or various forms of pinched sluice (Pullar, 1962), the resulting concentrates being redressed on wet tables. Tin mineralization in both eastern and western Tasmania shows a spatial correlation with middle Palaeozoic biotite granites and adamellites. The range of composition of these granitic rocks is restricted with respect to Mg, K, and Na content. Because this compositional restriction is shown by granitic rocks from other tin provinces, the concept of a genetic relationship between these granites and the associated tin mineralization is reinforced, and similar concentration mechanisms may be involved.Gold mineralization is largely restricted to eastern Tasmania and in contrast to the tin mineralization is rarely spatially associated with the middle Palaeozoic granitic rocks, although most authors have suggested a genetic correlation with hornblende and/or biotite granodiorites.Although few analyses are available, the granodiorites that are spatially associated with gold deposits exhibit similarities to granitic rocks from gold provinces elsewhere. These features suggest a possible genetic relationship between gold mineralization and the granodiorites.The composition of granitic rocks may be used as an aid to exploration in delineating areas of potential tin and gold mineralization in granite terrains.

The extraction of copper(II) from sulphate solution was investigated using LIX®984N in kerosene. The parameters that could affect the extraction, such as equilibrium pH, extractant concentration, salt concentration, various diluents, and temperature, were separately investigated. On the basis of slope analysis, the complex formed in the organic phase is proposed to be CuR2, where R is the anionic part of LIX®984N. The extraction equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy ( G) of the extraction process were determined. The positive value of H obtained from temperature variation studies showed that the extraction process is endothermic. The extraction of copper was lowest when chloroform was used as the diluent. Separation and recovery of copper from a synthetic copper-nickel solution containing 6.35 g/L Cu(II) and 0.58 g/L Ni(II) was carried out using 20%(v/v) LIX® 984N. The separation factor ( = DCu/DNi) was found to be pH-dependent. A two-stage batch countercurrent extraction was carried out at an O:A ratio of 3:4 at equilibrium pH 1.05 for extraction of copper from copper-nickel solution, followed by copper stripping from the loaded organic phase with 15% H2SO4 at an O:A ratio of 3:1.

In setting out to describe the methods and machinery employed at Iron Knob the writer does not attempt to give any information as to the situation, topography or geological features of the locality. This, together with estimates of the quantities of ore still available, has been carried out in a most thorough manner by R. L. Jackr and F. R. Hockey. This essay is intended to deal with working methods as they exist to-day, beginning with drilling, blasting, quarry traction, etc., and touching on such details as the supplyof electricity, water and compressed air.At the present time almost the entire output of ore is won from the hill known as Iron Monarch. The form of the hill, a smooth, rounded dome, rising some 640 ft. above the plain and having a base diameter of n miles, lends itself ideally to the "bench" system of open-cut quarrying.Fig. 1 shows the relationship of the benches "A," "B" and "E" in their order of development. Successful longwall mining requires a stable tailgate entry. Gate entry performance is influenced by a number of geotechnical and design factors, including: - Pillar size and pillar loading; - Roof quality; - Floor quality; - Entry width; and, - Artificial support (primary and secondary). This paper describes a comprehensive, practical, design methodology, based on statistical analysis of a nationwide data base of longwall ground control experience. Geotechnical surveys were conducted at 44 U.S. longwall mines, and underground observations of site geology, entry conditions, and support design were recorded at each mine. The observations were combined with discussions with mine personnel to identify 69 longwall gate entry designs as satisfactory, unsatisfactory, or borderline. Only conventional longwall designs, in which the pillars are expected to carry the full abutment loads, were included in the data base. Designs which employed yield pillars only were excluded. The case histories were characterized using five descriptive parameters. Pillar design was described by the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability Factor (ALPS SF). A major new contribution is the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), a rock mass classification system that quantifies the structural competence of bolted mine roof. Other quantitative measures were developed for primary support, secondary support, and entry width. Multivariate statistical analyses indicated that in 84% of the case histories the tailgate performance could be correctly predicted using just ALPS and the CMRR. Most of the misclassified cases fell within a very narrow borderline region. The analyses also confirmed that primary support and gate entry width are essential elements in successful gate entry design. The relative importance of the floor and of secondary support could not be determined from the data. Based on these results, a simple equation was developed to guide the design of longwall pillars and gate entries: ALPS SF,, = 1.76 - 0.014 CMRR Where: ALPS SF, = ALPS SF suggested for design. Guidelines for entry width and primary support density, as related to the CMRR, are also provided.

A demonstration of dozer blades, designed for recontouring area-mined spoil and shown effective at Kansas and East Texas surface mine sites, was conducted at a Northeast Arizona surface coal mine to determine their effectiveness in different climate and soil conditions. The specialized tools were: 48-ft angle blade (on side-by-side tractor), 24-ft grading bar, modified 24-ft "U" blade (on side-by-side tractor), and a 13-ft deep "U" blade. Interest in the increased dirt-handling capacity of a previously built 22-ft blade, resulted in the design of a new Centerflow Blade of good versatility, able to maintain increased flow in otherwise difficult-to-move spoil. The demonstration involved 263 acres and showed a reduction of 50% in reclamation costs and 20% in fuel requirements for this mine site over conventional equipment. This savings resulted from improved technology, trained operators, and rigorous application of supervisory and monitoring techniques. Procedures and results of the demonstration are presented and analyzed here, along with guidelines for application of findings.

A study of the crystalline materials on or near the surface of freshly made or "green" superphosphate granules and mature, "set" superphosphate granules was undertaken using X-ray diffraction, X-ray mapping, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe micro analysis techniques. Calcium sulphate (CaSO4), calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CaSO4 1/2H20), and mono calcium phosphate monohydrate (Ca(H2PO4)2H2O), were the only crystalline species present in the "green" superphosphate.In the set superphosphate however, additional compounds were present, namely complex iron and aluminium phosphates Ca(Fe,AI) H(HPO4hF2)2H2O, (Fe)3(H3O)H8 (PO4)6H2O and calcium sulphate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O).The complex phosphates tied up the major part of the Fe and Al in the system and were concentrated on or near the surface of the granule. An intimate mixture of CaSO4.2H2O, and CaSO4, along with the above mentioned complex Fe-AI compounds, crystallize close to the surface of the granule and cause the setting of superphosphate that takes place during storage.

For more than a decade, changes have occurred each year that have improved the regulatory and business climate for mining in Alaska. These changes have taken place during Republican and Democratic governorships as well as when the state House of Representatives and Senate were controlled by either party. During some years, the changes have been relatively minor. In others, including the 2003 legislative session, the changes could only be characterized as massive. These improvements have encouraged exploration. This, in turn, has resulted in some major new discoveries. But Alaska is essentially unexplored and tremendous opportunities remain.

The following paper describes the refining practice for the production of lead, silver and gold at the works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., Port Pirie, South Australia.The refinery is situated on the wharf frontage and is built parallel with it. The refinery occupies an area of approximately 3380 square yards. (Fig. 8)There are two buildings, one containing the softening and de-silverising sections, measuring 225 ft. x 57t ft., while the other building, which measures 225 ft. x 90 ft. covers the de-zincing, lead moulding, retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections. (Fig. 1)The retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections are completely isolated from the rest of the plant by strong small-mesh wire gratings welded to steel uprights. The dore parting plant and generator room are further isolated by a brick wall, built up to the roof. The two main buildings are steel structures, with outer walls and roof of "Robertson" corrugated sheeting; the side and end walls are open for some distance above the ground, and this, coupled with the high roof which is 50 ft. from ground level, ensures the free access of air and light. Conditions are such that operators work in a clear atmosphere.

THERE are certain facts that the mining industry in Australia is faced with at the present moment which may be accepted as axioms. The industry is at a low ebb, as evidenced by statistics. Metals form the basis of all modern industries, and are necessaryfor the welfare of Australia. Mining is a wasting asset. Every ton of ore extracted is one ton less which c.annot be made good, and it should be our duty to get as much profit froin that ore as possible, otherwise there is a permanent loss to the country.The metal market cannot be controlled by Australia; it is more or less an international matter. Australia has not been thoroughly prospected. There are no mines being developed that are likely to replace those which are being depleted.Our mining engineers are as capable as those in other parts of the world, and have made good where they have been given a chance. There is no one cause for the present depression; there are several, more or less, interwoven. Of course, the war has had an adverse effect, but that has only dislocated things temporarily; it upset our markets, influenced the price of metals, and affected the labour market and cost of stores. Labour troubles made their appearance before the wave of unrest swept over the world. The cause of labour discontent must be investigated, and if possible removed. As each industry has .its·own problems, miners must inquire into their special problems, as there is no sovereign remedy that will suit all cases.It is obvious that we cannot mine ore if we do not know where it is; therefore, the first thing is to discover workable deposits.

The production of a 40% Al-Ti alloy was successfully proven at the lab scale, using pure TiO2, aluminium, and lime. These tests were conducted in an induction furnace maintained at 1600?16250C. The introduction of rutile into the feed recipe resulted in an alloy containing between 0.35 and 1.10% Zr, depending on rutile to TiO2 ratio. DC arc production of the alloy was largely accomplished at 40 and then 200kW scale. These tests evaluated various metallurgical and operational factors including target slag composition, Ti-content in the alloy, co-feeding versus sequential, furnace bath depth, and rutile as part of the Ti containing feedstock. Overall, an alloy containing 24?33% Ti was consistently produced with co-feeding of the reactants and with lower taphole tapping. When rutile was added, the zirconium analysis in the alloy remained below 0.2%. The main impurity elements were iron, silicon, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen.

The new application and development of grout jacking processes has combined, over the last decade in particular, to provide a method by which the effects of new underground construction on superficial structures can be controlled to acceptable levels. This paper sets out the basic principles, processes and limitations of compensation grouting. It describes key elements of the philosophy and design and details the control systems required to perform satisfactorily. To illustrate the application, a case history is described for the construction of a shaft and tunnel within and beneath the prestigious structure of Harrods in London.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. Examples of some projects in the area include upgrading the country's carbide industry and developing new high speed and tool steels to meet international standards. The oxidation of ferrous sulphate to ferric sulphate with air and oxygen in a gas lift percolator was investigated with initial Fe2+ concentrations in the range 0·01 M to 1·0 M,temperatures in the range 20-80°C, and pH in the range oto 2.The rate of formation of Fe3+ was found to be well described by the rate expressionEquation 1and a consistent mechanism is proposed.The presence of Cu2+ was found to cause an increased rate of oxidation, the effect being greater with Cu2+ concentrations increasing in the range 0·001 M - 0·01 M in 0·2 M Fe2+. The effect of other solutes containing Ni, Zn, Mn, Co, Hg, Cl, Mo, NH4, As, Cr, or Na at a concentration of 0·001 M in 0·2 M Fe2+ was negligible.

An albitization granite type tantalum-niobium ore from Jiangxi Province, China was taken as the research object in this paper. The main valuable minerals in this ore are tantalite-columbite and uranmicrolite, and the minerals that can be comprehensively recovered include cassiterite, sulfide minerals, topaz, zinnwaldite, and quartz-feldspar. Based on the research results of process mineralogy, the roughing process of gravity separation for coarse particles combined with flotation for fine particles is proposed. The combined cleaning process of flotation-gravity-magnetic-electric-hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of gravity separation while the combined cleaning process of gravity-flotation- hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of flotation. High intensity magnetic separation is used to separate and recover zinnwaldite and quartz-feldspar from gravity tailings. By mineral processing for the crude ore containing (TaNb)cassiterite concentrate is 0.0003% with a grade of Sn 63.22% and a recovery of Sn 47.42% while the yield of sulfide concentrate is 0.0783% with a grade of Pb 33.15% and Zn 27.09% which can be separated to get lead and zinc concentrate respectively. The yield of topaz concentrate is 0.1545% and the topaz mainly distributed in the size range of -0.4+0.074mm, which can be made into abrasive products of different particle sizes after classification. The yield of zinnwaldite concentrate is 16.91% with a grade of Liwhiteness of 75%, which is a glass-ceramic material of good quality. 2O5 0.0346%, Sn 0.04%, Pb 0.10% and Zn 0.33%, the tantalum-niobium concentrate with a yield of 0.00278%,a grade of (TaNb)2O5 53.61% and a recovery of (TaNb)2O5 44.49% is obtained. And the yield of 2O 1.34% and Rb2O 0.40%. The yield of quartz-feldspar concentrate is 30.42% with a grade of K2O+Na2O 8.98% and Fe2O3 0.11% and a natural All of tantalum, niobium, cassiterite, topaz, zinnwaldite, quartz, and feldspar are recovered effectively.
