A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The recent and active magmatic arcs of eastern Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands are well endowed with sulfide mineralisation and include deposits such as Ladolam, Panguna and Solwara 1. The majority of the mineral systems in this belt are younger than four million years old, with some deposits remaining active to the present day as exemplified by active hydrothermal systems on the island of Lihir. The geodynamic setting that led to the formation of these deposits is still unresolved, with, for example, both the Pacific and Solomon Sea plates considered responsible for the formation of the Ladolam deposit on the island of Lihir under different models. In order to understand and characterise the formation of south-west Pacific mineral deposits, we must first reconstruct the complex geodynamic evolution of the region. New kinematic reconstructions show that while mineral systems in eastern PNG and the Solomon Islands are hosted within a single arc related to subduction at the New Britain and San Cristobal trenches, variable and discrete geodynamic settings exist within both the upper and lower plates throughout this region, which give rise to distinct mineralised corridors. Most notably, this region is host to: the Solwara 1 deposit, which occurs within a major transtensional corridor in the eastern Bismarck Sea the Ladolam deposit (Lihir), which is interpreted to have formed above but in relation to tearing of the subducting slab the Panguna deposit, which is related to structure in the subducting slab marginal to the actively spreading Woodlark Basin.An evaluation of the nature and variability of these diverse geodynamic settings through time can provide us with a better understanding of the relationship between the active south-west Pacific magmatic arcs and mineral deposit formation. The utilization of diaphragm wall construction in Hong Kong began in 1974 with the construction of the New World Center, the first diaphragm wall job built in the British Colony. That landmark job of which I am presenting a few slides and a schematic description, embodied all of the difficulties and problems which are encountered in the difficult geology of Hong Kong. A small rocky island in the South China Sea, Hong Kong provides one of the finest natural harbors in the world. It is its splendid harbor, coupled with the enterprising attitude of the Hong Kong Chinese and the laissez-fair attitude of the British government which has resulted in the explosive growth of this speck of land soon to revert to the political control of mainland China.

This paper uses the results of research trials by Landcare Research and Forest Research Institute and assessments of reclamation plantings at mines and other drastically disturbed sites to describe methods of enhancing restoration of native forests. The characteristics of mine and forest environments are compared to highlight the difficulties facing restoration and techniques which result in successful restoration are described. Selection of the most appropriate technique is illustrated by describing restoration of lowland beech-podocarp forest at a West Coast coal mine. The key to successful reclamation is to understand the factors controlling and limiting plant establishment and growth, then to design rooting media, surfaces and management regimes to create a favourable environment. This paper concludes with a summary of the planning and technical factors which are critical for successful restoration of native forest.

The Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process (MTMP) process is based on DC open arc metallothermic smelting of calcined dolomite at normal pressure and temperatures of 1650?1750°C. The process was demonstrated at the pilot scale in the period 2000?2004. Major changes to the MTMP pilot plant were made throughout the development period, which lasted for about five years. The changes included design and installation of new equipment, modification of existing equipment, changes in the metallurgical approach in terms of feed rates, feed recipes, furnace operating temperatures, cold and hot dolime feeding, and steady and systematic changes in the operating procedures and maintenance of the plant. As a result, the performance of the pilot plant gradually improved from one campaign to the next, in terms of availability and in particular the condensation efficiency. A change of support model consists of a procedure to change a stationary histogram at a small data scale to represent a larger scale; typically a distribution of sample drill-hole data is changed to represent a chosen selective mining unit (SMU) scale. Most grade variables average arithmetically. Thus, the mean stays the same for different scales, and the variance changes according to well-established theory using average variogram values. The longstanding challenge has been to predict how the shape of the histogram changes. The discrete gaussian model is widely used because it appears reasonable and introduces few artifacts; there are no artificial minimum/maximum values and the target mean and variance are reproduced exactly. The resulting distribution shape, however, is strongly dependent on a multivariate gaussian distribution. The authors generalize the approach by taking advantage of a property of the isofactorial model, which allows one to specify where the random function falls on the spectrum between a low-entropy mosaic model and a maximum-entropy diffusion model. A measure of dissemination (MD) is computed using a ratio of the madogram and the variogram. The change of support algorithm is developed that uses a variable measure of dissemination (VMD) that is easily calculated and fit to data from the deposit. The resulting VMD change of support model is very flexible to represent different mineralization styles encountered in practice; global predictions of recoverable reserves are more accurate and decision-making is improved. A number of real examples are shown to demonstrate the approach.

A dynamic testing program was performed to evaluate installation procedures, assess capacity of 610-mm (24-inch) diameter open ended steel pipe to evaluate set-up and provide minimum pile tip elevation based on the dynamic testing results. The program was performed for a marine terminal project consisting of a 570-meter (1900-foot) long, overwater railroad trestle. The project location is Santa Marta, Colombia, South America. The subsurface profile generally consisted of 4m (12 ft.) of water and soft to hard silty clays. The piles were installed to an approximate tip elevation of -22 meters (MSL). Three piles were initially dynamically monitored during installation and then later monitored during restrike driving to evaluate pile drivability and bearing capacity including time related capacity increases due to soil "set-up". Knowledge of change in pile capacity with time after end of initial driving is important for design of pile foundations.

Due to the environmental constraints and the limitations on blasting, ripping as a ground loosening and breaking method has become more popular in both mining and civil engineering applications. Because of the technological advances in dozer manufacturing techniques, more powerful dozer types are available today. Thus, the ground, previously classified as non-rippable, has become rippable. As a consequence, a more applicable rippability classification system is needed which considers both equipment properties as well as rock properties in all applications. This paper is part of a complementary research work and presents the development of a previously published grading rippability classification system by the application of fuzzy set theory. The integrated rippability classification system considers the combined utilization of the rock and equipment properties, as well as expert opinion. Fuzzy set theory was chosen mainly because it deals well with uncertainty in the choice of variables. Although there are apparent sharp or discontinuous boundaries in existing classification systems, practically most of the factors involved in the ripping process are less well defined and boundaries are more blurred (or fuzzy) or uncertain in nature. Also by means of fuzzy logic it is possible to eliminate bias or subjectivity. The validity of the proposed system was checked by the comparison against existing classification systems and direct ripping production values obtained at studied sites. It is seen that by means of fuzzy logic, the uncertainties are reduced and biased usage of the final ratings that appear in alternative systems are efficiently dealt with. Real copper prices during the past several decades display two striking characteristics. First, they are highly volatile. Within a year or two, copper prices can rise or fall by 30% or more. Second, over the longer term, they are falling. Indeed, since 1970, the secular trend price for copper is down by more than 50%. Figure 1 highlights both of these characteristics. It shows the average annual US producer price for copper since 1970 measured in constant 2001 US dollars. While the London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price is not shown, it and the US producer price have for some time moved more or less together. So pronounced short-run fluctuations around a significant long-run decline describe copper prices, not only in the United States, but around the world.

The combination of Stage 1 Geoinformatics legacy data intervention processes with the Stage 2 ultra-detailed airborne geophysical prospecting demonstrates a new approach to converting data to information to knowledge, and converting that knowledge into exploration results.   The Coromandel region of the North Island of New Zealand has long been know to host gold deposits of economic viability (Hauraki Gold Fields). To the SE of this area lies the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) where the geology and structural setting mirror the Hauraki Gold Fields, however mineral exploration in the past has been hindered by the blanketing volcanic ash deposits. Glass Earth Limited recognised that this whole potential epithermal gold province could be effectively explored utilising rapid, risk orientated processing to review legacy geoscience data: The Geoinformatics Data Intervention Process; which in turn directed ultra detailed airborne geophysical surveys over the TVR. Results have outlined 21 new drillable potential epithermal gold targets; and a plethora of other targets with high prospectivity.

The operation of electric face equipment in underground coal mines has proven to be extremely hazardous to mining personnel, including equipment operators and others working in the vicinity of active equipment. Recent industrial engineering studies* of accidents and fatalities indicate that a major contributor to this hazardous situation is noncompliance with modern principles of human engineering, particularly lack of standardization of control configurations. Control configurations differ not only among different machine types, but also among the same machine types produced by different manufacturers. This lack of standardization can produce a high incidence of error in the operation of electric face equipment, thus creating a potential source of accidents. Other examples of non-compliance with human engineering principles are the widespread use of identical black, round control knobs (regardless of the function being performed), and the inappropriate location, spacing, and labeling of controls. Any or all of these factors may place the operator in a "negative transfer" situation, which means that control manipulations appropriate for one type of machine are different from (or even the reverse of) the control movements required to produce the same effect on other machine types. This situation increases the accident potential to the operator, as well as to others in the vicinity. Accident potential is further increased by circumstances which do not allow for large error tolerance-specifically, emergency procedures. Reports of accident statistics cite operator inexperience as a primary cause of most accidents involving underground electric face equipment. Several factors contribute to operator inexperience, including: 1. High personnel turnover 2. Employee absenteeism 3. Current union practice of bidding for jobs.

This paper reviews the development and operation of a small underground tin mine in NE Tasmania. Tin mineralisation was discovered in the Lottah area in the 1880s with early alluvial and eluvial workings leading to the development of large low grade open pit operations. Apart from short lived activities operations ceased in 1915. Intensive exploration in 1978 - 1981 outlined substantial tonnages of low grade tin mineralisation (0.2% Sn) of open pit material. An underground ore body was also located (800 000 tonnes 0.6 per cent Sn). Spectrum Resources Australia Pty Limited acquired a 98 per cent interest in the property in 1988. Mine and mill development began in early 1989 based on an underground mine utilising trackless mining using room and pillar with fill stoping. The milling circuit involves primary jaw crushing, Barmac secondary crushing to 1 mm, Mogensen and DSM screens with jigs and tables to make a wet concentrate. Final tin concentrates are produced by high tension and magnetic separation. Planned production rates are 500 t/day with a mine life of six to seven years.

The formation in Newmont Mining?s Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, NV contains high levels of abrasive quartzite as well as gold, copper and silver. Newmont started mining operations at Phoenix (formerly Battle Mountain Gold) three years ago and the planners knew they were working with a challenging geological formation. But as it turned out, it was more challenging than anticipated. Mine manager Mark Evatz said, ?Anything that touches Phoenix rock wears fast. The rock fights back here.? To contend with the hard conditions, Newmont uses Atlas Copco?s Pit Viper 271 (PV-271) blasthole drill. Because of the hardness of the rock, drilling at Phoenix requires hammer drilling and the mine uses Atlas Copco TD65 hammers with 171 mm (6.75 in.) bits. The mine?s PV-271?s are outfitted with a single 41 m3/min (1450 cfm), 2.4 MPa (350 psi), oil-flooded air compressor. Phoenix has six Atlas Copco PV-271 drill rigs plus an Atlas Copco DML and a DM45 midrange blasthole rig. The mine?s goal is to keep 3.6 Mt (4 million st) of muck in inventory to stay ahead of the shovels and support needed operational flexibility (ore control related). Drilling efficiency has been a continuous point of improvement since operations began at the mine. The single-pass depth capability of 16.5 m (55 ft) on the PV-271 helped with that. Originally, the plans called for 6-m (20-ft) bench heights, supported by 7-m (23-ft) drill depths, and time spent moving from hole to hole was eating up productivity. Drilling on that plan resulted in drilling an average of 14 m/h (47 ft/hour). When depths were changed to 13-m (44-ft) drill depth, supporting blasting of 12-m (40-ft) benches, they were able to use the single pass capacity of the PV-271. Performance increased to more than 18 m/h (60-ft/hour) an hour. Although the drill depth change largely supported the improvement, other aspects of continuous improvement associated with improved knowledge of the Pit Viper drills helped as well.

"Water is a very important component in the production process at underground coal mines. Current unfavourable economic conditions have forced the coal mining industry to identify and address every possible bottleneck preventing optimal production. An increase in water-related downtime was identified as one of the bottlenecks at Goedehoop Colliery’s Vlaklaagte Shaft. The purpose of this project was to identify the various causes that contributed to the high downtime (501 hours in 2013, which led to a potential profit loss of R12.9 million) and to suggest possible solutions.After a thorough investigation the main causes of water-related downtime were identified as low water pressure and low water flow caused by pipe leakages and bursts. The main root cause for the low water flow and pressure was identified as being the low pressure resistance (1600kPa) of the thin-walled galvanized steel pipes used in the underground inbye water reticulation system. The pipes were selected according to the previous 1000 kPa pressure requirement for the continuous miner. However, the pressure requirement changed to 1500 kPa, which resulted in the pipes being exposed to much higher pressures than designed for.The water reticulation system was reviewed and current and future underground pipe layout and water requirements were determined for the shaft. The time frame in which the water consumption would be the highest was determined to be between 1 January 2014 and 7 September2014. Machine and sprayer specifications were used to determine theater consumption at the shaft. Three different solutions were considered to solve the water-related downtime problem and to ensure the efficient supply of water to the newly open sections. Permanent underground concrete dams, semi-mobile dams, or new pipe columns with a higher pressure resistance of 3200 kPa were considered. A trade-off study (taking into consideration cost, time to completion and ease of implementation, maintenance requirements, safety, and flexibility) was completed to determine which of these solutions would be most viable.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Morphological analysis of alluvial gold recovered from the same segment of a placer by four common commercial methods indicates that gold shape and the presence of quartz intergrowths or sulphide overgrowths substantially influence the recovery efficiency of each method. The amount and types of gold saved by each method varies according to the different hydrodynamic conditions under which each of the methods operates. Reverse circulation drilling has the lowest efficiency and preferentially loses moderate-high flatness gold and intergrown or overgrown gold particles with relatively low density. Gravity riffle, hydraulic riffle, and jigcentrifugal concentrator systems respectively save progressively more of these problematic gold morphotypes, but still lose significant and sometimes substantial amounts (of profit) to the tailings. Because of the differences in recovery efficiency, reverse circulation drilling probably underestimates the grade of most placers and may have resulted in bypassing several economic deposits. Losses to tailings by commercial recovery plants arise from inadequacies in fundamental plant design features. These inadequacies compromise plant efficiency by limiting the ability of plants to simulate the wide range of hydrodynamic conditions necessary to operate effectively throughout placer systems. Incorporation of sand pumps and multiple recovery methods into the more sophisticated plants only partly overcomes these inadequacies. At best, efficiency will be maximised in a few segments of the placer determined by individual plant design, and will decrease progressively upstream and downstream of those segments. Without prior knowledge of the morphological characteristics of the gold to be mined, it is difficult to choose the most appropriate plant design, or to estimate what proportion of the gold will be recoverable by any given plant. If the relevant relationships are not considered beforehand, the recovery plant is likely to lose a significant proportion of the gold, and sacrifice maximum profit.

They are gone now. Gone like that long ago generation that gave them birth. The Homestake Mine, nestled in the northern Black Hills, closed in 2001 after 125 years, the longest run of any major American gold mine. The Homestake Mining Co., which guided its destiny for those many years, is gone too. It merged with Barrick Gold. The Hearst family, which guided the early destiny of both, has long since gone beyond its mining heritage and into the national and even international spotlight. The mine and the company passed from the scene with as little fanfare as heralded their birth, amid the Black Hills gold rush of the 1870s. They both grew into American mining legends, as did the town they sired and nurtured, Lead. In a real sense, the mine and the company symbolized one of the last links to a vanished world and a mining era.

The rock mechanics approach to stability problems of steep rock slopes dealt with in this article has particular reference to the concept and methods of analysis developed by the Salzburg, Austria, school of rock mechanics. These theories are based on the principal postulate of the anistropy of the technological properties of in-situ rock masses. The present approach, which is more in line with geological engineering concepts, differs distinctively from the soil mechanics and engineering geological concepts commonly practiced in the United States. PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING APPROACH TO GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS AVAILABLE ENGINEERING CONCEPTS At the present time two different concepts are available for engineering analysis of underground structures and foundations in different earth material: soil mechanics and rock mechanics. Of these two branches, soil mechanics is, after 40 years of initially revolutionary and more recently evolutionary development, well established. Its principal concept of replacing in-situ soils or rock masses by perfectly homogeneous substitues has resulted in many practicable methods of analysis which, if applied with judgement, have resulted in successful applications throughout the world. Conversely, rock mechanics is still in the early stages of revolutionary development. Few, if any, standard concepts or methods of analysis have been established. Opinions vary widely. At present the professional background of an investigator very often determines the engineering concept to be applied to a particular problem, rather than its actual requirements if considered objectively. This paper stresses the rock mechanics or geological engineering point of view advocated by the Salzburg group. A review of the soil mechanics concepts is considered beyond the scope of this paper. In the experimental concentration of Vermont talc-magnesite ores, talc concentrates and tailings rich in magnesite were obtained. On account of the possible market value of the magnesite, the tailings are given consideration' in this report along with the talc. After some comments about the talc industry, the magnesite that accrued as tailings will be considered. Then the flotation results will follow.

KYANITE and the related minerals sillimanite, andalusite, dumortierite, and topaz are natural aluminum silicates that can be used in production of mullite (3A1203?2Si02), a superduty refractory material. Kyanite and sillimanite are the dominant ones because of their greater abundance. The only other kyanite-group mineral presently used for mullite production is andalusite. Mullite is not an absolutely essential material as other refractories can be used in the same heat range. However, it is a highly satisfactory one. It is the only compound of silica and alumina that is stable at high temperatures. It has low thermal expansion and is very resistant to corrosive melts and to thermal shock. For these reasons mullite refractories have a much longer life than standard fire-clay refractories under the same conditions. Worldwide, excluding U.S.S.R., the refractories industry consumes about 150-000 short tons annually of kyanite group minerals and synthetic mullite.

The mineral composition and microtextures of a cubanite-rich sulphide ore are described and cubanite breakdown textures are illustrated. The occurrence of cubanite in macroscopic dimensions is featured.The origin of the ore is tentatively related to a composite ore fluid arising initially from an ultramalic source and extracting some metal components from an older granite mass along the margin of which the serpentine was emplaced. Some alternative possibilities as to origin are also mentioned.
