The Pipeline ore body was discovered in March 1991. The construction of the new mine and mill did not start until early March of 1996. Upon completion of permitting and corporate project approval, the 289 million USD project was “fast tracked”. The commissioning began 11 months after start of construction and the project ended 40 million USD under the budget figure. The objective of this paper is to review and highlight the Pipeline Project history from discovery, design, lawsuits, permitting, and re-design through to current - 1998operating practices. Particular emphasis will review the process design, design mistakes, and design successes. The paper will review project history, feasibility, design concepts, operator training, construction, financial and the current operation. Additional discussion will review what design features worked and which did not work within the process plant.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL)1 of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Technical Support Center has devised a prototype hand-held instrument which can provide a direct assessment of the potential explosibility of a coal and rock dust mixture. Current Federal regulations require that rock dust be applied in all underground areas of a coal mine to mitigate the propagation of a coal dust explosion. To determine compliance with the Federal regulation, mine inspectors collect dust samples from sections of underground coal mines for an MSHA laboratory analysis of incombustible content. However, the laboratory analysis may not be completed for more than a week or two, during which time the mine area from which samples are taken may be inadequately protected. The operation of the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM) is based on the difference in optical reflectance between light rock dust and dark coal dust. For a given coal volatility, the optical reflectance of such mixtures is relatively constant at the limit of explosibility, independent of the coal dust particle size. The CDEM is not intended to replace the current MSHA laboratory analysis of coal mine dust samples for incombustible content, but to serve as a supplemental device for enhancing mine safety through improved rock dusting practices.

The possibility of drilling oil wells from underground locations is not a new concept. It bas not been cost effective for the oil industry in the past and therefore disregarded. Today's state of the art in tunneling and shaft sinking greatly improves the potential for this type of oil field development scheme. This report presents a plan for providing a aeries of drilling bases and the design of the drilling location. The design minimizes the amount of excavation needed to develop the oil field and maximizes the use of rapid excavation techniques.

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss & dilution. The mischaracterisation of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of blasting can lead to significant financial losses on account of ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorised as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run of mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorised as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have developed innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures to sustain the benefits.

The development of forced aeration as an approach to enhancing copper sulfide leaching is traced from its earliest development up to present day operations using this technology. Both large-scale field tests and commercial operations are covered. The historical portion is preceded by an introductory discussion of the role of air (oxygen) in sulfide leaching. Sufficient aeration may be achieved via naturally induced convective airflow. However, cases are identified where this is insufficient, leading to retardation of the sulfide leach rate. For these situations, forced aeration may be beneficial. The historical portion of the paper focuses on the major field tests that have been conducted in Montana, Nevada and Utah, along with commercial operations in the United States, Australia, Chile and Peru. The paper concludes with some general comments about the applicability of forced aeration, which are based on the information developed to-date.

The recycling of metal resources in mining influenced water (MIW) requires a paradigm shift from within the mine water treatment industry. The potential to recover zinc for beneficial use in the micronutrient fertilizer industry was investigated through a survey of zinc micronutrient fertilizer representatives. An application of the findings to a case study of the Argo Tunnel influent MIW was then implemented. It was concluded that the potential to beneficially reuse MIW residuals in fertilizers exists; the current process sequences of treatment will need to be modified if metal recycling is to be prioritized.

INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth. This Tunnel Connection project will include construction of two short tunnels to connect the existing subway tunnels (Red and Blue lines) in the northern loop area of downtown Chicago through a new station. The Southeast Tunnel will connect the Red Line to the new station below the intersection of State and Washington Streets and the Northwest Tunnel will connect the Blue Line to the new station below the intersection of Dearborn and Randolph Streets. The connection tunnels are located in a very dense urban area of downtown Chicago and under several important historical buildings. Both tunnels are curved at the intersections and located at a depth of about 7.5 m below ground surface in saturated soft clay with an average undrained shear strength of approximately 25 kPa. The design calls for minimizing surface disruption and ground displacement while maintaining normal operation of the existing subways during the construction of the connections tunnels. This paper presents mining and cut and cover tunneling alternatives for the project.

The Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI) was founded in 1949 to fill mining industry and government needs for minerals research and development. The operations of scores of mines, mills, and plants around the world are based on the results of work done by the Research Institute. Among other things, the Research Institute conducts studies in geology, mine planning, mineralogy, size reduction, minerals processing, and hydrometallurgical techniques in extractive metallurgy. Many CSMRI projects also involve energy and environmental considerations. What follows is a summary of some of the studies in which the Research Institute has been and is currently involved, as well as some comments on trends and developments in the industry.

Introduction The domestic copper industry has suffered for some time from declining ore grades; rising costs associated with conventional mining, milling, smelting and refining; tightening environmental restrictions; and shrinking markets due to materials substitution. Ore grade depletion is a major problem. It is illustrated by the decline in average copper yield shown in Fig. 1. From 1979, copper grade has dropped 60%, lowering yields from 1.2% to 0.49% (Sousa, 1981). The US copper industry is taking drastic measures to enhance its competitive posture and to guarantee its future worldwide position. In a sense, this involves a general restructuring of the processing philosophy of US copper producers. Judging from recent trends, this restructuring relates to the application of solution mining techniques to the treatment of copper ores and low grade waste material. Recovering copper by leaching techniques has been practiced for centuries. As early as the mid-16th century, some Hungarian copper mines were recycling copper bearing leach solutions through waste heaps (Nash, 1912). In the US, recovering copper from dilute mine waters has been carried out for more than 100 years. There are, however, certain technical innovations that have elevated the importance of solution mining as a process for copper recovery. These include: • Advances in solvent extract-electrowinning (SX-EW); • Developments in acid and acid ferric cure processes for oxide and mixed oxide sulfide ores; • Improvements in heap and dump construction; and • Advances in in situ leaching technology. Generally, solution mining enjoys certain intrinsic advantages over conventional mining and milling. Compared to conventional milling, the combined capital and operating costs of leaching facilities are normally lower, start-up times are faster, and the leaching operation usually has less impact on the environment. Furthermore, solution mining represents an expedient way of extracting metals from small shallow deposits, and is particularly suited to the treatment of low grade sources. And, in the case of waste dump leaching, there is a tremendous resource in-place that has the mining cost already off the books. This paper updates current US copper solution mining trends. Solution mining systems Schlitt (1980) summarized the characteristics of the principle leach systems in the US. He pointed out that the wide variations in copper deposits make solution mining a more site-specific activity than conventional mining and milling. Heap leaching is usually selected for moderate to high grade ores having a copper mineralization that is amenable to acid leaching (oxides, silicates and certain sulfides). Higher grade ores mined specifically for heap leaching are usually treated to optimize copper extraction, therefore, crushing and some pretreatment (acid curing) may be justified. On the other hand, dump leaching practice usually involves leaching low grade waste rock placed on large dumps as dictated by topography and haulage costs. Mine waste is therefore treated in an uncrushed run-of-mine condition. Finally, in situ leaching is appropriate for either very deep ore bodies or for recovering copper from low grade rock left behind in abandoned pit walls, stopes, and subsidence zones from earlier mining activities. True in-situ solution mining should be defined as the leaching of ore in its original geologic setting. Heap leaching Heap leaching has a long history as a hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery. The methodology of heap leaching established at Rio Tinto in Spain more than 300 years ago is basically the same as that used today. The Red Dog zinc-lead-silver deposit is located in the DeLong Mountains of the western Brooks Range in northwest Alaska. The region is located 145 km(90 miles) north of the village of Kotzebue (Fig. 1).Red Dog’s current resource base is 143 Mt (157 million st) averaging 16.1% zinc, 4.3% lead and 83g/t (2.4 oz/st) silver. It is contained in four structurally separate deposits— the Hilltop, Main Deposit, Aqqaluk and the newly discovered Paalaaq deposit. Recent exploration for the Aqqaluk and the Paalaaq deposits has contributed to Cominco American’s understanding of the detailed structural geology of the district and its role in the placement of individual ore bodies.

The threat of global warming and its prominent position in public discussion and political debate requires all industry to take stock of its contribution to rising atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. For the primary metals industry, the first step must be to identify the pattern and range of emissions at each step in the production chain. Only then can the industry assess the economic consequences of the penalties on emissions that will be imposed by governments and regulators and devise cost-effective plans to avoid or mitigate such penalties. While some work has been done to estimate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using Life Cycle Inventory analysis, this approach is less useful than site-by-site emissions estimates. It is the level of specific emissions at each site that will ultimately deter-mine carbon taxation liabilities and participation in emissions trading schemes. Most mining companies have moved with the times to issue sustainability reports for their operations. But in the absence of any standardized reporting format, it is difficult to make useful comparisons between even the best-reported producers on a like-with-like basis. For this reason, Minecost.com modeled the use of fuels and energy used in mining, milling, shipping and metallurgical treatment to cover ?cradle-to-gate? emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the production of the major base metals copper, zinc, lead and nickel. Greenhouse gas emissions ? overwhelmingly carbon dioxide ? are associated with the consumption of energy at every step in the production chain, from exploration through mining to the production of refined metal. Producers of primary metal employ diverse technologies to mine, mill, smelt and refine several different types of ore. Every orebody has its own special characteristics. In addition, most base metals are produced in concentrate that must be transported to smelters, with con-sequent emissions consequences.

Flotation separation and recovery of value minerals from ores containing fibrous silicate minerals are known to be quite challenging. Earlier studies have established that the metallurgical challenges (poor selectivity and recovery, high energy consumption, etc.) arise from the impact of the fibrous minerals (with high aspect ratio) on pulp rheology, which was found be rather complex. The complex rheological behavior of ore suspensions containing particles with high aspect ratio and its influence on flotation outcome are investigated in this study. Flotation tests and rheological measurements were carried out with both ores (containing fibrous minerals) and a model system comprising nylon fibers (chemically inert) added to a copper ore that had no fibrous mineral. These studies allowed the determination of contributions of physical properties of the fiber to pulp rheological behavior. Optical microscopy images of the fiber pulp indicated that the fibers entangled to form two levels of microstructures: two-dimensional (2D) aggregates under semi-dilute (< 20% solids) conditions and three-dimensional (3D) microstructures at concentrations > 30% solids. The yield stress (σ) values determined for the fiber pulp were logarithmically related to the volume fraction of the 2D/3D structures. The relationships developed here for different ARs showed that the yield stress of a flotation pulp changes with respect to shape, size, and the concentrations of the microstructures. Implications to the effects of such entangle networks on selectivity of flotation separation are discussed.

I liked to hunt and fish, so I thought it would be fun to work for a company that made knives or guns. It seemed like metallurgical engineers would be something those companies could use, so I started in physical metallurgy. I got a summer job at the great Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO shoveling muck onto conveyors. I was hooked. I loved everything about mining, so in the fall, I changed majors from physical metallurgy to mineral processing. For many years you actually discouraged young people from studying the mining disciplines. Could that be right? That’s true.

The recently completed in-pit crushing and conveying project at Phelps Dodge&apos;s Morenci Mine is rated among the world&apos;s leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109 kt/ d (120,000 stpd) of copper ore, using regenerative conveyors capable of providing more than 5.5 MW (7000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. The Morenci Mine is located 330 km (200 miles) east of Phoenix, AZ. Phelps Dodge Corp. owns an 85% interest in the mine. The remaining 15% is owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Corp. Copper has been continuously produced from the Morenci district since the late 1800s. Until 1989, run-of-mine ore was transported from active mining faces to the Morenci and Metcalf concentrators by truck and rail haulage. In that year, a system of in-pit, semi-portable crushing plants and overland conveyors was commissioned. This substantially reduced truck haulage and effectively eliminated rail haulage in the pit. The system used two semi-portable, in-pit crushing stations equipped with 60/89 gyratory crushers. The crushed ore from both plants reported to the first of two overland belt conveyors, arranged in series, for transport from the pit to a coarse ore stockpile. The system was "backed-up" by existing locomotive rail haulage.

Throughout the mining industry today, new bearing materials - ZA* high-performance zinc-aluminum alloys - are reducing costs of maintaining and rebuilding a wide range of equipment. As replacements for bronze bearings, installed in original equipment at the plant or during maintenance and repair operations in the field, the zinc alloys frequently provide better or equal performance at lower cost. The ZA Alloys The ZA alloys are a family of three high-performance zinc-aluminum alloys that compete in cost and performance with cast iron aluminum and bronze. The growing number and uses testifies to the versatility of these alloys and is encouraging their consideration in a wider range of applications. The ZA alloys are referred to as ZA-8, ZA-12, and ZA-27, the numbers corresponding approximately to the percentage of aluminum each alloy contains. ZA-8 is a permanent-mold casting alloy and is usually selected for decorative purposes; ZA-12 provides both performance and cosmetic benefits; ZA-27 offers the greatest functional strength. The term high performance ZA alloys distinguishes them and their improved engineering properties from traditional zinc die casting alloys. Maintenance Savings At its mine in Timmins, Ontario, Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. operates over 40 Joy VCR- 150 crawler-mounted air-powered rock drills. Most of the drill components undergo severe stress as the drill batters through the under-ground rock. As the components wear, the drill bits wobble; when the wobble becomes excessive, the drills are rebuilt. In the gear train, which rotates the drill steel, there are three planetary gears with - historically - bronze bushings. Since the planetary gear bushings are wear items, they are routinely replaced during overhaul. The bronze planetary gear bushings (three bushings per assembly) were replaced up to five times annually. With 43 drills in use, bushing consumption approached 600 per year. At the manufacturer&apos;s replacement part cost, the 600 bushings and gears would cost more than $20,000 a year. Even though a major saving was achieved by having the bronze bushings manufactured locally, the 600-unit annual usage provided ample incentive to investigate other ways of lengthening drill life and reducing the part costs. One approach was to consider using a bushing material that offered good bearing properties, but was lower in cost. About three years ago, ZA-12 zinc-aluminum casting alloy, costing less than half as much as bronze, was evaluated and selected for testing. One hundred ZA bushings were manufactured and placed in service as the drills came in for rebuilding. At the next rebuild the "drill doctor" (drill maintenance mechanic) noticed that, although the bronze bushings were completely destroyed, on occasion the zinc alloy bushings were not. In addition, he noted that some of the ZA bushings showed less wear than the bronze bushings. Because the bushings were changed routinely during each overhaul, the actual operating life of each bushing was not determinable. Therefore, it was not possible to statistically compare the life of the ZA bushing against the bronze. However, the desired life of the part was from overhaul to overhaul. So the ZA alloy obviously met the objective, giving equal or better life than bronze at a significantly lower price. Based on the favorable results of the testing under actual operating conditions, Kidd Creek maintenance personnel decided to switch permanently to the ZA bushings for rebuilding the VCR-150 rock drills. Original Equipment Application As one of the leading companies marketing the ZA alloys, as well as a zinc -copper-silver mining company, Kidd Creek is interested in developing applications for the alloys by original equipment manufacturers such as joy Manufacturing. Kidd Creek marketing representatives provided joy with information on the Timmins mine tests, along with ZA-12 bushings for evaluation and testing. Based on this information, joy installed ZA bushings in 12 new VCR-150 units and delivered them to customers for use in such areas as granite quarries and copper, lead, zinc, and limestone mines. During the following year, joy engineers closely monitored repair reports to verify the performance of the ZA part. The engineers&apos; findings convinced them of the advantages of ZA-12. As a result, joy now uses ZA-12 bushings in the manufacture of its VCR-150 air tools. Advantages for Casters and Users In the foundry, the new alloys have proved their castability and profit potential in sand and metal permanent-mold processes, as well as the new graphite permanent-mold gravity casting process. The energysaving, pollution-free and ease-of-machining benefits they offer are important to all of these processes. Design and implementation of a roof bolting plan requires reliable geotechnical information of strata, such as rock strength, and locations of interfaces and voids/fractures. The drilling parameters obtained during normal roof bolt installation cycle provide a fast and economic way to gather information on the geological structure within the bolted horizon. The purpose of this research project is to develop a method for identifying the geological features in the mine roof strata based on drilling parameters of roof bolter. The criterion for void/fracture prediction has been developed and proven valid. This paper focuses on the estimation of the strength of roof strata by using drilling parameters. Based on the results of a series of underground and laboratory tests, feed pressure is found to be the most sensitive parameter when the strength of roof strata changes. Moreover, it was also found that both penetration rate and rotation rate have obvious impact on the magnitude of feed pressure. Based on these findings, the criterion for the estimation of roof strata strength has been developed using the relationship among feed pressure, penetration rate and rotation rate and implemented in MRGIS.

Potential air emission impacts to federal Class I areas from distant sources are receiving increasing scrutiny by federal land managers (FLMs). This paper provides summary results of the impact analyses conducted for FLMs and PSD permitting of a proposed expansion for a taconite processing facility. Results from air quality increment, acid deposition, mercury deposition, and visibility analyses for Class I areas located 50 to 162 km from the facility showed the project would meet the respective regulatory and guideline values for the specific analyses. During the course of the air quality analyses, potential new requirements from the FLMs’ Air Quality Related Values Workgroup (FLAG) efforts and USEPA’s Regional Haze Program were brought into the PSD discussions. The implications for these future guidelines and regulations as they may affect future expansions at other mineral processing facilities are also discussed.
