Lime production is the largest single chemical use for limestone and dolomite. The term “lime” in this review refers to high-calcium and dolomitic quicklime, their hydroxide forms and dead-burned dolomite. This review is restricted to a discussion of the U.S. lime industry. Production and consumption In 2004, according to preliminary data, U.S. lime production was about 20.1 Mt (22.1 million st), an increase of 900 kt (990,000 st) compared with 2003. Production in2004 was valued at about $1.4 billion. Commercial sales of lime totaled 18.6 Mt (20.5 million st) and captive production was 1.5 Mt (1.65 million st). Total U.S. consumption was about 20.2 Mt (22.2 million st). The majority of U.S. lime trade was with Canada.

China, Mexico, Spain and Turkey are the leading producers of celestite (strontium sulfate), the most common strontium mineral. Of an estimated 510 kt (562,000 st) of celestite produced worldwide during 2004, 98 percent was produced in those countries. Deposits of strontianite (strontium carbonate), another strontium mineral, have been identified in China and Malawi. Relatively small quantities are reported from the deposit in China. Although celestite deposits occur in the United States, no domestic celestite has been mined since 1959.

The environmental sustainability is linked back to human sustainability; the sustainability development comprises the environment, society, and economics. This study mainly focused on mining sustainability and its impact on the environment of Pakistan. For measuring the level and environmental mining sustainability nature to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the world’s second largest salt mine “Khewra,” Folchi and Phillips environmental sustainability mathematics (PESM) models are applied. The results indicated that Khewra was deemed to be potentially sustainable for the environment and quality of salt. The results suggest the delicate balance of maintaining sustainability successfully, regarding the mining process in Pakistan which has been affecting the local environment and community so badly. INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. In Mindola mine on the Zambian Copperbelt, there is a plan to extend the current production level of 1.2-1.5 km (3,900-4,900 ft) with five additional production levels. Research work indicated that the present total heat output of 38.6 MW will inevitably increase to 63.2 MW in 25 years. Estimated WB and DB temperatures, representing the total heat generation in stope faces and development headings during these same periods are predicted to increase to 33.8/40.2°C (93/104°F) and 35.3142.10C (95/108°F) respectively. It is assessed that the nominal refrigeration capacity needs to be progressively increased to 9, 000 MW.

The Mining Engineering Department at Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) has a new Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved program for Part 46 and Part 48 mine health and safety training. The training program will utilize the facilities and faculty from Montana Tech’s Mining Engineering and Safety, Health, and Industrial Hygiene departments to provide superior mine health and safety training to the mining industry. The faculty of each department includes professionals with experience in safety training and the mining industry. The training program incorporates adult learning techniques and extensive hands-on activities in all training modules. The instruction will exceed MSHA requirements. The resources available on Montana Tech’s campus will be utilized to strengthen the training program providing the mining industry with a world class mine health and safety training program.

The 16-to-1 milling operation is Sunshine Mining Company's first new silver and gold producing facility. The 16-to-1 underground mine and mill are located approximately 64 km (40 miles) southwest of Tonopah, Nevada. Ore re- serves in the epithermal vein deposit are estimated at 0.91 Mt (one million st) of ore, at an average silver grade of 206 to 240 g/t (6 to 7 oz/st) and an average gold grade of 1.2 g/t (0.035 oz/st). The underground mine uses a large diameter blasthole stoping system of mining using highly mechanized rubber-tired equipment. The mill uses conventional cyanide leaching with countercurrent decantation and Merrill-Crowe precipitation. The mill start-up was in February 1982 resulting in the first pour of dore' in March 1982. The mill's present annual production is approximately 31.1 t (1.0 million oz) of silver and 264 kg (8500 oz) of gold.

Creating projects to reach a goal is not new to American industry. In fact, all major construction projects, from skyscrapers to bridges, are completed using similar project management techniques. However, modern project management is relatively new. It was not formalized until 1962, when NASA and the US Department of Defense recognized the need to develop uniform project management procedures throughout the aerospace industry (Moder, Phillips and Davis, 1983). This management method was not introduced to the mining industry until the early 1970s (Britton, 1983). Project management typically follows an organized, four-stage process —definition, planning, implementation and control.

A comprehensive field study has been carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling has been carried out to envisage dust concentration due to the existing and closed mines in the region. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 levels at the selected receptor locations ranged from 86.39 to 194.89 and from 34.82 to 99.55 µg/m³, respectively.

Precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels have traditionally been designed with conventional steel bar reinforcement. In many cases, this has been satisfactory in service, but in others, major problems have occurred with the durability of the linings. Commonly this has resulted from corrosion of the reinforcement, mainly from chloridesin ground water, causing spalling of the concrete and leading to very expensive and disruptive repair programs. This paper discusses the relative merits of designing tunnel linings with steel fiber reinforcement to provide long-term durability, improved impact resistance and toughness for greater load capacity across joints, enhanced robustness during transportation and erection, plus improved fire resistance with the addition of polypropylene fibers. Guidance is also given in the selection of the correct fiber type, mix design and testing methods to establish the optimum dosage required and production techniques to ensure even distribution and compaction.

Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 ~ 25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the `Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 165o cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of `orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

High value materials, such as gold, platinum and other precious metals are subject to loss through unauthorized removal from mines, smelters, refiners, and other places where such materials are processed. A study published in 20011 determined that between 1994 and 1998 an average of 603 kilograms of gold per year was stolen from South African miners and subsequently recovered. This does not include the gold that was stolen but not recovered. At 2011 prices, 603 kilograms of gold would be worth approximately $33 million. Mine security personnel believe that the unrecovered stolen gold far exceeds what is recovered2. Traditionally, metal detectors have been used to screen personnel leaving secure areas to discourage such unauthorized removal. However, with the current near-record prices of gold, platinum, and other precious metals, it has become worthwhile for people exiting a facility to walk out with quantities of product that are too small for ordinary metal detectors to register, resulting in substantial financial losses.

Weak rock is an important consideration in tunnel design and construction due to the difficult ground conditions that are often encountered. Nevertheless, when conditions are favorable high advance rates can be achieved leading to economical tunnel construction. Successful construction of a tunnel in weak rocks depends on correctly anticipating the behavior of these unique materials. The objective of this paper is to provide guidelines that can be used to accurately classify the performance of weak rock in tunnels.

Surveying is to tunneling, as a steering wheel is to a car—somewhat essential if you want to end up in the right place. The principles of tunnel surveying have remained unchanged since the first tunnels were constructed: To mathematically connect the selected start and end points of a tunnel and physically translate that alignment onto the ground. The alternative is just dead-reckoning and leaves the probably less than satisfying end results to chance. Today’s laser-guided tunnels often have to thread the needle through a maze of soil types, utilities, structural features and other underground considerations. Surveying makes it possible.

Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An invitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold(which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14%within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%)throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

Crocidolite is a well known causative agent for mesothelioma. Studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width. Epidemiological studies have shown that ‘thin’ fibers from mining areas of Western Australia and the Cape Province, in South Africa are associated with a high mesothelioma risk while exposure to ‘thick’ asbestiform amphibole fiber of the same fiber type are associated with little or no mesothelioma risk. This study is concerned with ‘thick’ Bolivian crocidolite but similar findings also probably explain the paucity of mesotheliomas in the Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite and African Transvaal crocidolite mines. The findings from the present study suggest the incidence of mesothelioma in the three major cities of Bolivia is not significantly elevated above background even though Bolivian crocidolite has been used for the past 60 years commercially and residentially in all three cities. Although some cases of mesothelioma may have been missed due to a failure to reach hospital or a shortened natural lifespan, mesothelioma generally occurs after the age of 50, we cannot tell precisely the extent to which these were confounding. We suggest the most likely explanation for the lack of mesotheliomas despite the large populations at risk from the long and extensive residential and commercial use of crocidolite containing products, is related to an increased fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Virtually all industries use sulphur in some form. About half of the world's production is used in the production of fertilizers. Sulphur is produced in one form or another in over sixty countries in the world. The major producing countries, in order of importance, are: U.S.A., Canada, U.S.S.R., Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, and Spain. Canada is the largest exporter of sulphur presently supplying about 30% of the world elemental sulphur export trade. It has held this position since 1968. World sulphur resources are virtually unlimited. Future world competition will come from Iraq and other Middle East countries as well as Central and South America.

The contract included excavating and lining 26,000 L.F. of rock tunnel to 33'-I.D. Concrete was placed at a rate of 90LF per working day using a movable bridge to allow batching, mixing and pumping of concrete adjacent to the tunnel form.

A flowsheet for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores has been developed which involves acid leaching followed by hydroxide precipitation of the metal values and then releaching of the hydroxide cake with ammonia. Investigations of the chemistry of extraction of nickel by LIX® 84-I and a developmental reagent, XI-84-IT, along with the physical properties of the organic phases are described. Based on these investigations, suggestions with regard to design of a solvent extraction plant and operating conditions are made.
