"Justified is a show on FX that takes place in Kentucky coal country. The two main characters, a cop named Raylan and a criminal named Boyd, are adversarial to the very end, yet they manage to maintain a seemingly inexplicable bond of friendship through it all. The final episode ends (spoiler alert) with Boyd asking Raylan why that is. He responds, “If I allow myself to be sentimental, there is one thing I wander back to” Boyd responds, “We dug coal together.” Fade to black.What creates these types of bonds between friends and co-workers in mining? I don’t know about you, but many of my best friends I met in mining. Certainly the people I respect the most in this world are a part of our industry. Good, honest, honorable men and women. And I am not just talking about the leaders of our industry. I am talking about great miners who taught me how to do the right thing and also be productive.I have had the pleasure to work for some great people and the misfortune of working for some of the loudest screamers. What I consider the worst butt-chewing in my life may surprise you. I once worked for a man I respected, because he showed me respect. He went on a business trip and left some instructions. For some reason, I was able to justify to myself that they applied to everybody but me, and I disobeyed them. When he returned he called me into his office and said to me: “Tim, you pissed me off when you did that.” He said it quietly and with no anger. I had lost his respect. This devastated me more than any screaming shift boss ever could have. I learned a lot about values from that conversation.Most of us will spend more time at work than we will with our families over a lifetime. It is natural that tight bonds be created at work. What I believe makes mining special is that these bonds are so strong. They are strengthened by the incredibly hard work our miners do. They work at all hours, on holidays and in all sorts of extreme weather conditions. The physical demands of the job are sometimes exhausting. Our bonds are further reinforced because the work is dangerous. Not only does management watch out for the wellbeing of their people, but each and every one of us looks out for one another. The bonds are made tight because our people are so passionate about what they do, no matter the department or profession. Finally, they are strong because of the thousands in the industry that keep doing the right thing, every day. We make great friends in this industry because of the strength of character of our people. That is why Boyd and Raylan respected one another so much."

In current post-industrial America, U.S. manufacturing is undergoing major changes both in the technology of its production and in the size and composition of its workforce. At the same time that computers and robotics move the shop floor toward becoming the unmanned "factory of the future" [1], they increase the need within the overall production enterprise for new types of technicians and engineering professionals [2]. Based on previous works which examined, first, the evolution of the technology of manufacturing toward the flexibly-automated factory of the future and, second, the technical- professionalization of U.S. manufacturing sectors [1,3], this paper looks briefly at the workforce of the U.S. metals industry.

Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is known to be an effective pyrrhotite depressant in pentlandite flotation. It has been reported recently that its performance becomes more consistent when the reagent is used in conjunction with sulfur dioxide (SO2). In the present investigation, the effects of DETA and SO32- ions on the changes in the hydrophobicity of pyrrhotite electrode have been studied at pH 6.8. The results show that both DETA and SO32- can reduce the water contact angles of pyrrhotite; however, the contact angles can be reduced to zero only in the presence of the SO32- ions. This finding may be attributed to the ability of the SO32- ions to reduce the polysulfides formed on pyrrhotite by superficial oxidation, which may in turn provides an explanation for the robust performance of DETA/SO2 combination.

As part of the City of Portland, Oregon?s East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project, nine separate 2,130 mm (84-inch) diameter reinforced concrete pipe microtunnel drives totaling approximately 2,380 m (7,808 ft) are being constructed to divert flows from several of the existing outfalls to the main tunnel. The drives were constructed in challenging ground conditions that include soft soils under the ground-water table, large amounts of wood and metal debris, and close proximity to sensitive structures. While all of the drives will be addressed, the focus of the paper will be on the 931 m (3,055 ft) continuous drive connecting Outfall 46, currently the longest microtunnel driven in North America.

The Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers recently published the second edition of a 1997 publication on geotechnical baseline reports. The new publication, called Geotechnical Baseline Reports for Construction, Suggested Guidelines, represents a 2-year effort that adds three new chapters to the original publication, as well as capturing practitioner commentary through two industry workshop sessions. The paper will overview the contents of the new publication, particularly the three new chapters.

Mineral liberation data are routinely obtained for a wide variety of applications, including ore characterization and characterization of various metallurgical test products obtained in bench-scale laboratory testwork. Newmont Mining Corporation owns several properties in the Carlin Trend containing refractory gold ores. These ores are generally difficult to treat and have to undergo several processing stages for gold recovery. At Carlin?s Mill 5 operation, flotation is used to pre-concentrate some of these difficult ores to produce a sulfide concentrate to feed the roaster. It is of interest from a flotation perspective to be able to study the floatability of pyrite, arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite, since these minerals all have different quantities of gold associated with them, and have to be recovered to ensure a successful separation has been achieved. In this paper, a detailed MLA study on several Carlin ores was undertaken on samples from flotation tests, using air or nitrogen as flotation gas, specifically to study the differences in floatability characteristics, which ultimately impacts overall gold recovery. Looking back over the last 150 years or so, it is not hard to see that electricity has been a primary force in shaping human development. It has been a basic ingredient in our industrial revolutions that simultaneously improved the productivity, working and living conditions within our farms, factories, hospitals, offices and homes. Today, it has become an essential part of our daily life and our future. Amazingly, we keep finding new ways to use electricity to make our lives more safe, comfortable and productive. It is a great success story of human ingenuity, achievement and development. Demand for electricity The convenience and value of electricity has not gone unnoticed by consumers. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) (Energy Information Administration, 2009), electricity is the fastest growing form of energy in the world and during the next 20 years the world will likely consume twice as much of it as it does today. In 2008, almost 20,000 terawatt hours of electricity globally were consumed (Energy Information Administration, 2009). That is enough electricity to light up more than two million baseball stadiums or power more than 11 billion computers continuously for an entire year. The United States has the dubious distinction of be-ing the largest consumer of electricity in the world with enough power to provide each American with more than 3 kW of electricity ? that is about twice the power currently available to Europeans, eight times the power available to the Chinese and more than 25 times the power available to the citizens of India (American Coal Foundation, 2009).

Novel dewatering aids were tested on various coal samples from the U.S. and Canada in laboratory and pilot-scale filtration experiments. The reagents substantially improved the dewatering kinetics and reduced the cake moistures. The cake moistures were typically reduced from 20-30% by weight to 8-14% range in vacuum filtration. When the reagents were used in conjunction with a pressure filter, higher degrees of moisture reductions were achieved. In the present work, the novel dewatering aids were tested using different types of pilot-scale vacuum filters. The results were consistent with those obtained in laboratory experiments.

Experience has shown that, since the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, over-compaction of spoil during the reclamation process has severely limited tree growth on reclaimed land. Researchers at the University of Kentucky have conducted a ten-year investigation at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky that monitored the changes in selected spoil physical characteristics for various reclamation and compaction alleviation methods. More specifically, research plots were developed for reforestation that employed three different levels of compaction and two different methods of ripping for overly compacted spoil. Each year measurements were made in the field of dry bulk density, using a nuclear density gage, and maximum penetration depth, using a recording cone penetrometer. In addition to good correlation between tree growth and selected spoil characteristics, the data demonstrated a gradual convergence of the measured spoil characteristic data over the study period.

Shaft 26B of New York City’s Third Water Tunnel was constructed by Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. of Evansville, Indiana. The 176.8 m (580 ft) deep shaft will serve as the construction shaft for the Manhattan spur of Water Tunnel No. 3. Twelve m (40 ft) of over-burden was supported by a rectangular cofferdam. This shaft was excavated in 13 months, through 164.6 m (540 ft) of rock, using 24,040 kg (26.5 tons) of explosives. Concrete lining cycles included the installation of stainless steel pipes embedded in the lining as the shaft advanced. A total of 635 m (2,084 linear feet) of stainless steel pipe was installed.

Critical width Before we go further into pillar design, we should look into the matter of "critical width," because of its effect on pillar behavior. Critical width refers to the greatest width that the rocks above the mine can span before failure or, if there are pillars, the width to which we must mine before the pillars accept the full weight of the overlying materials. There are theories to help calculate that probable width, and they usually boil down to one-quarter or one-third of the depth of cover; but they don't always fit, and it would be better for us to understand the factors that control local conditions. Critical width may be controlled by the thickness or strength of one or more of the strata above the mining horizon. In a gold mine, we might have a thick granite or basalt above us, perhaps capable of bridging across most or even all of a small ore body. In that case, pillars might have to support nothing, or perhaps just the weaker or damaged rock below the strong main roof. Obviously it would be wrong to design for tributary load on pillars based on some lab-determined rock strength. In some coal mining districts in Utah, huge steps can be seen in the mountain sides, with slopes on weathered shales and vertical cliffs 100 or 200 ft high in thick, hard sandstones. The sandstones are capable of bridging across hundreds of feet, often making mining deceptively easy at first, but it becomes more difficult as greater areas are opened. Sometimes such a mining sequence leads to violent bumps and bursts as the wide spans of sandstone sag and bear down on the working faces, like giant nutcrackers, or as bridges eventually fail, releasing much pent-up energy.

INTRODUCTION In late 1970, an experimental geophysical program was undertaken at the Lake Huron Tunnel for the purpose of developing a geophysical technique that could be applied to determining the thickness of rock above the crown of the tunnel and identifying anomalous geologic conditions ahead of the face as the tunnel was advanced. The Lake Huron Tunnel is an 18.5 foot diameter machine bored tunnel having a total length of approximately 6 miles. The easternmost 4.5 mile section of the tunnel extends offshore beneath Lake Huron. At the time this study was started, approximately 1.5 miles of bore remained to be completed at the east end of the project. The tunnel is part of a raw water intake for the City of Detroit water supply. The Lake Huron Tunnel is bored in Antrim shale, a dense marine shale of Mississippian or Devonian age. The west end of the project encountered banded brown shale containing numerous calcareous concretions ranging in size from a few inches to more than 16 feet in diameter. As the tunnel was advanced in an easterly direction, a transition was encountered into very uniform gray shale. One set of prominent vertical joints was encountered with a strike running approximately 15 to 20 degrees askew of the tunnel axis. Bedding is essentially flat. Variable quantities of salt water and natural gas occur in the rock. The results of exploratory drilling carried out for preliminary design studies indicated that as little as 30 to 35 feet of rock cover could be expected under the lake at the east end of the project.

Heissler is a member of the board of directors of Liebherr International AG.It all started for the Switzerland-based company when Hans Liebherr first recognized a need for heavy equipment in the construction industry, Heissler said. His first product, introduced in 1949, was the TK10, a mobile crane that, at the time, was a groundbreaking innovation to the heavy construction industry. From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."

Introduction Shale Mining Problems The mining problems an oil shale operator will face are largely determined by the process. Candidate oil recovery processes are surface (above ground processing of mined oil shale), modified in situ (underground with some shale removed), and true in situ (completely underground with no shale removed). The shale removed for modified in situ (MIS) is generally processed by surface techniques. The mining problems are different for each category. Fig. 1 depicts the diversity of western shale deposits. Mining for surface operations will employ underground mining techniques in common use but the scale will be larger. A typical oil shale operation is expected to require 75,000 to 250,000 st (68 000 to 226 800 tons) a stream day of crushed oil shale. This is above the upper limit of current mining operations. Major problems include: (1) lack of good engineering design properties for oil shale, especially when interbedded with saline minerals at depths below 1,000 ft (305 m); (2) presence of water, hydrogen sulfide, and methane in some areas; (3) necessity for mine disposal of as much retorted oil shale waste as possible; and (4) control of environmental impacts of mining. Portions of the oil shale deposits in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah and significant portions of the Devonian shales in the eastern U.S. are adapted to surface mining. No major technological problems are apparent outside overburden thicknesses up to 1,000 ft in the West. However, numerous political and environmental difficulties have arisen. One major oil shale developer cancelled a planned surface mining operation and currently is pursuing a modified in-situ plan. The eastern shales are closer to the surface than the western, but suffer from many of the same environmental and political problems. Modified in-situ operations face much more severe mining problems than surface efforts. Because the mined stope (called an in-situ "retort" by processors) acts as a retorting process vessel subject to gas flow, combustion, and temperatures between 1,500° and 2,000°F, mining is under highly restrictive limitations. This processing method involves removing between 20 and 40% of the shale deposit and then blasting the roof and walls into the mined space, where the oil is recovered by retorting. Major problems are: (1) swell factor severely limited; (2) need for consistent size distribution of blasted shale; (3) even filling of stope (in-situ retort) by blasted shale with consistent permeability throughout; (4) scaleup of blasting techniques, after optimization; (5) protection of retort pillars and roof during and after retorting; (6) prevention of groundwater percolation; (7)use of ANFO explosive in wet holes; (8) disposing of surface-retorted shale waste in stope; and (9) restoration of site. Most mineral processes currently in use, such as flotation, spirals, gravity concentrators, etc., are only effective over a small range of sizes, hence the upstream need for technology to accurately classify fines by size. The Pansep’s design is revolutionary. Slurry is fed onto connected mesh sections that move without bending or vibration, in a circular motion. Both sides of the screen mesh are utilized, so Panseps are self-cleaning and has half the footprint of other mesh-type screens. Developed in South Africa in 1997, the Pansep has proved itself very effective as a wet fines screen to effectively classify fine mineral fractions from 50 to 2,000 micron (325 to 10 mesh).

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

Six pioneers of the American mining industry will be inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The 16th annual Mining Hall of Fame induction banquet will begin with a reception and open house at 5:30p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The six inductees include James M. Gerstley, the only living member, and George O. Argall, Jr.; John F. “Leadville Johnny” Campion; Charles R. Nailler; Edwin N. Pennebaker and Russell L. Wood.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (US EPA 319 program) provided funding to aid a public-private effort in the installation of an environmentally-friendly system to treat abandoned mine drainage at Jennings Environmental Education Center (Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources). Through this cooperative effort among state and federal agencies, mining, excavation, and environmental companies, college and home school students, Girl Scouts, and volunteers, a successful multi-component passive system, readily accessible for upgrades and public education/research activities, was built. 90 people were directly involved in construction of this award-winning system and about 1000 people annually benefit from the educational opportunities.

The evaluation of raw materials in terms of quality profile, mineralogical character and mechanical properties is of great importance to the cement industry. The variability of their chemistry and structure is among the decisive design parameters in the choice of any mining, handling and preblending systems. Furthermore, clinker and cement production require sound estimates of the above parameters, to help produce some appropriate and realistic raw mix configurations and achieve minimum standard deviation of the major components. This paper addresses this subject from the perspective of a cement producer and presents the principles of a methodology aimed at optimizing mine planning and process design. Finally, results from case studies on actual sedimentary deposits currently in operation are discussed.
