The industrial vision system provides on-line 2D particle size analysis for aggregate slurries in both the overflow and underflow of hydrocyclones. This paper covers required vision system features allowing CCD cameras to function in the harsh environment of a mine milling area. The study conducted demonstrates the system’s capacity to obtain particle size distributions for controlling hydrocyclonic separators. The particle size distribution is obtained within seconds and immediately updated to allow for process adjustments. Results are then provided as a graphical computer generated display or output as a 4-20mA current loop for process control. The primary use of the vision system is in classifying particles in cyclone overflows which are often a few microns in size. Typical size information for actual mine slurry samples are presented and possible control schemes discussed.

Conveyors are a highly effective means of transporting material over long distances. Recently there has been a trend toward long conveyor systems with high capacity single flights. These conveyor systems are an efficient alternative to costly truck fleets. Also with deeper mines, the use of diesel driven trucks becomes more difficult. Another trend is in underground mining, where conveyors are an efficient alternative to drift hoists or dedicated rail systems.

September 2005, Northern Dynasty Mines announced the discovery of a new, high-grade deposit at its Pebble project in southwest Alaska. The product of insightful geological investigation, Pebble East, as it is now known, is quickly growing into one of the most significant copper deposits in the world. Preliminary analysis shows it could reduce the U.S. copper supply deficit by a third. The new deposit has also altered Northern Dynasty’s view of how Pebble should be developed. This article describes the Pebble project as it is currently understood and outlines the work planned for the next several years.

Train services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 following several months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on Sept. 11, 2008. A lorry caught fire on a shuttle train carrying heavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50-km- (31-mile-) long northern tunnel. The fire, that spread to other vehicles, raged for about 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of up to 1,000º C (1,832° F) caused extensive damage to about 600 m (2,000 ft) of the 7.6-m- (25-ft-) diameter tunnel?s concrete lining, approximately 11 km (7 miles) in from the French entrance. The Channel Tunnel operator, Eurotunnel, awarded the repair con-tract, estimated to be between ?50 to 60 million, to a consortium of Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) and Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civil engineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses high-pressure water jets to remove concrete from various structures, was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete. Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolition and industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.

A central aspect of heap leach management and recovery optimization is solution control. Insofar as each heap is unique in physical and metallurgical properties, it is essential to understand the hydraulic parameters that control the migration of solution on a case-by-case basis. Water Management Consultants, as part of an ongoing research effort for Phelps Dodge Process Technology Center, have adapted techniques of parameter estimation for application to data typically resulting from metallurgical column testing. The parameterization is completed within the context of a variably saturated flow model that allows interpretation of available hydraulic information collected during hydrometallurgical column tests. A novel interpretation approach is introduced to extract the necessary hydrodynamic parameters from typical hydrometallurgical data sets. Results from the application of the approach to standard metallurgical test data will be presented together with a discussion of the application of information gained to the design and operation of a heap.

"Hydrothermal systems are a major component of the processes that shape the composition and structure of the ocean crust, providing a major pathway for the exchange of heat and elements between the Earth’s crust and oceans, and a locus for prolific biological activity on the seafloor and underlying crust. On the other hand, the structure and composition of hydrothermal systems are the result of complex interactions between heat sources, fluids, wall rocks, tectonic controls and even biological processes.Ultraslow spreading ridges, including the Southwest Indian Ridge and the Gakkel Ridge, are most remarkable end member in plate-boundary structures (Dick et al., 2003), featured with extensive tectonic amagmatic spreading and frequent exposure of peridotite and gabbro. With intensive surveys during the last decades, it was suggested that ultraslow ridges are several times more effective than faster-spreading ridges in sustaining hydrothermal activity. This increased longevity can be attributed to deep mining of heat and even exothermic serpentinisation (Baker et al., 2004).Distinct from faster spreading ridges, one characteristics of hydrothermal mineralization on seafloor in ultraslow spreading ridges, including the active Dragon Flag hydrothermal field at 49.6 degree on the Southwest Indian Ridge, is the abundant and pervasive distribution of lower temperature minerals (such as Fe-silica or silica, Mn (Fe) oxides, sepiolite, pyrite, marcasite, etc.) in the hydrothermal fields. Structures formed by lower temperature activity in active and dead hydrothermal fields can also be identified. High temperature minerals such as chalcopyrite are rare or very limited in hydrothermal chimneys at ultraslow spreading ridges. The distribution of diverse low temperature hydrothermal activity is consistence with the deep heating mechanisms and hydrothermal circulations in the complex framework of ultraslow spreading tectonics. On the other hand, deeper and more extensive mineralization at certain locations along the ultraslow spreading ridges can be reasonably presumed."

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations) even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of current and future pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners? Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic, and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mines seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble in combination with a conventional mine seal so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed, and attenuated, so the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a ?Passive Mine Blast Attenuator? (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals. The last decade has seen an enormous increase in the use of contractors right across the Australian mining industry. So much so that contractors now operate 33 of the 68 underground metalliferous mines around Australia and are making significant inroads into iron ore in the west and coal in the east. Safety used to be a low priority for many contractors. The picture has changed dramatically in recent years as most contractors take a far more professional approach to safety management. This paper examines the changes that have occurred and the requirements for effectively managing safety in a contracting environment.

Leach heaps are plagued with problems due to fine material migrating downwards, clogging the spaces between the coarser ore particles, resulting in decreased metal recovery rates. The use of a binder in agglomeration would allow the fine material to be immobilized, increasing the availability for the solution to come in contact with all the ore. As much as 1.64*1012 BTU per year would be able to be saved if a 25% increase in copper recovery was experienced, assuming that 70% of heap leaching units converted to using agglomeration technology. This is equivalent to approximately 18% of the energy currently being used in leaching heaps.

During the SME Board of Directors’ midyear meeting in Monterey, CA Aug. 25, I discussed trends in the construction aggregates industry. Many construction-material suppliers may not have yet fully internalized the changes that are taking place. But the changes are significant. And they have shifted the focus in the aggregates industry from “assets” to “people and innovation.” Construction-material suppliers serve many customers. A typical quarrying operation at Graniterock would have more than 1,000 customers, mostly civil engineering contractors. Along with the push toward people and innovation, there is increased emphasis on vertical integration from aggregates to ready-mix concrete and hot mix asphalt, to final construction. If a company is not vertically integrated, it will at least have strong partnerships with other firms, to deliver a high-quality finished project on time.

Flow rate into the thickener or clarifier a) As the flow rate increases into the thickener or clarifier ?retention time? decreases which causes a greater affect hydraulically on the settling solids. So as the flow rate increases it will generally mean an increase in flocculant dosing rate. b) As the flow rate decreases into the thickener or clarifier the retention time increases which reduces the hydraulic affect on settling, improving settling rates. This will generally mean that as the flow rate decreases, we will decrease the flocculant dose rate.

The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

"This presentation aims to serve as a primer on conservation, research and regulatory organizations interested in the environmental impact of deep-sea mining. It will also consider a recent, early-stage proposal for an experimental SMS mining operation aimed at increasing our understanding of mining impacts and ecosystem recovery.Over the past 5 years, as deep-sea mining has been moving closer to reality, it has attracted growing attention from deep-sea biologists, conservation groups and operators of deep-sea research vehicles and observing systems. Several new international research organizations have emerged that have a direct interest in deep-sea biodiversity conservation, and the environmental impact of ocean mining. These include INDEEP, which evolved from the 10-year Census of Marine Life program, the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative that has recently hosted several high profile international meetings, and the VentBase forum of academics, industry and regulators that aims to develop environmental best practices and informational documents for all stakeholders involved in Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) mining. InterRidge, currently hosted by China, represents a decades old partnership of deep-sea biologists and economic geologists who discovered the more than 100 known hydrothermal vent fields and SMS deposits on midocean ridges and in other settings of seafloor volcanism. In 2012 InterRidge formed an industry liaison group to examine how the mid-ocean ridge researcher community could contribute to the development of environmentally responsible practices for the exploration and exploitation of SMS deposits. While initial meetings with industry were promising, InterRidge members are currently debating the relative merits of sharing exploration know-how and understanding of vent ecosystems with industry, against the need to maintain their independence as stewards of deep-sea ecosystems."

Several candidate sites have been proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), a facility that would provide over 2000 meters of overburden to screen out cosmic rays that would otherwise interfere with experiments. Types of anticipated experiments include: detection of dark matter and stellar neutrinos, and evaluation of deep microbial life forms. Engineering experiments might include more refined scanning devices to “see” rock defects ahead of tunneling, improved predictive models for groundwater inflows and tunnel support requirements, and improved instrumentation for monitoring in-situ stresses, rock deformations, and pore water pressures. Spin-offs from this research might include more sensitive security detectors for scrutinizing shipping containers, new drugs based on new microbes, and improved sensor systems for tunneling. A site near Leavenworth, WA, was assessed and shown to have numerous topographic and geotechnical advantages. Rock cover is on the order of 2250 meters. The granitic bedrock is suitable for tunneling a variety of large underground openings.

Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. The ability to optimise a concentrator from mill feed to final products requires a simulator which integrates comminution, classification and separation modelling. In order to model this range of processes, such a simulator must handle a variety of information about the ore. The AMIRA P9 project has developed a whole-of-concentrator simulation capability which brings together a texture-based model of mineral liberation, quantitative X-ray micro-tomography analysis to measure the inputs required by this model, and a multi-component simulator software framework. In the context of this approach, the term ?multi-component? implies the ability of the simulation to handle many particle properties simultaneously; for example size, composition, density, floatability etc. The simulation software framework provides the means to manage the flow of data around a circuit flowsheet, allowing each process model to access the information relevant to that particular model. A case study based on plant data from a gold-bearing pyrite concentrator is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the multi-component approach in simulating circuits which contain comminution and separation processes.

Typical sedimentary sequences overlying coal seams consist of interbedded sandstones, siltstones, shales, and rider coal seams. In many surface coalmine settings, these sediments are saturated; and prior dewatering of them is necessary for effective and economic mining, including the stacking of saturated spoils. Such sedimentary sections usually have a very low vertical hydraulic conductivity that does not allow them to drain in a timely manner prior to their being stripped. One potential solution is installation of drainwells. Drainwells are small diameter wells that can collect water laterally from the various more permeable layers in the overburden and then gravity drain it to a lower layer – often the coal seam being mined – where it can be removed by pumping wells or sumps located in the bottom of the pit. A ground-water flow model utilizing the 3-dimensional finite element code MINEDW has been used to evaluate the effectiveness of usingdrainwells in a hydrogeologic setting that is typical of the Powder River Basin. A series of numerical simulations were completed using various combinations and spacings of drainwells and pumping wells to dewater the overburden and coal seams. The numerical simulations suggest that drainwells can be a very effective method of overburden dewatering.

Petrographic analysis of rocks is traditionally performed with optical microscopy using thin sections and point counting. However, this does not provide accurate mineral proportions for sedimentary, volcanic, and soil-like material, because rock fragments, groundmass, and matrix are not identified as specific minerals. In addition, groundmass phases in volcanic rocks can be too fine to identify individually, and making thin sections of intact soil-like material is difficult because much of the material is not well cemented. ModAn is a normative calculation that estimates modes ??by applying Gaussian elimination and multiple linear regression techniques to simultaneous mass balance equations? (Paktunc, 2001) and allows location-specific mineral compositions to be used. One of the features of ModAn that makes it appropriate for this study is that it can model one of several sulfide minerals. Mineral compositions for Questa minerals were determined from electron microprobe analysis and entered into ModAn. Then by combining and normalizing results, bulk quantitative mineralogy can be determined using ModAn, petrographic observations, electron microprobe analysis, clay mineral analysis, and the whole-rock chemistry of the sample.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), and the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (Alameda CMA) are involved in a unique partnership on the planning and design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, located on State Route 24 in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The project will add a two-lane bore north of the existing three bores. The project will alleviate traffic congestion in the non-peak direction. This paper provides background on the existing facility, summarizes the need for the new fourth bore, describes the proposed improvements, sets forth the approach for project delivery, and lists some of the challenges that are expected during construction.

An aggregate plant may have difficulty balancing product stockpile inventories if hot mix asphalt (HMA) design engineers do not account for aggregate inventory during mix design. Yet HMA design engineers do not, often, take this into consideration during asphalt mix design. This is due to the lack of tools that enable the lab technician or engineer to optimize the mix for good performance while helping the aggregate plant manage its stockpile inventory levels and reducing the aggregate cost. This work presents a linear programming model of the asphalt mix design problem that helps aggregate plants manage their inventory levels while meeting HMA customer demands. The algorithm is implemented in MATLAB as an Asphalt Mix Design Optimization (AMIDO) program. The program is successfully validated with real-life data. The results show that AMIDO can be used to successfully produce any mix design while reducing the cost of aggregates by using the cheapest stockpile materials. The application of AMIDO will increase aggregate plant profitability when serving HMA customers and could potentially be modified for concrete aggregate customers too.
