Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a directed-energy deposition technology that uses arc welding procedures to produce computer-aided designed parts, such as three-dimensional printed metal components. A challenge of additive manufacturing is the anisotropy. Interstitial elements play a significant role in the mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V of different grades. In this research, the mechanical properties of Grade 5 and Grade 23 Ti6Al4V were compared for this application. Samples were extracted from WAAM-produced Ti6Al4V walls in different directions (horizontal and vertical) and at different positions (top and bottom). The samples were subjected to optical microscopy and tensile and hardness tests. Grade 5 Ti6Al4V samples were found to have greater strength, greater hardness, and lower ductility, owing to the higher content of interstitial elements compared with Grade 23. The bottom samples had higher strength than the top samples, which is attributed to thermal cycling during manufacturing, resulting in different microstructures.

In 2001 Platinum overtook gold in foreign revenue earnings for South Africa. The export sales from platinum group metals amounted to R29.3 billion as opposed to gold export sales of R28.6billion1. Organizations must undertake new ventures to replace old, worn-out and obsolete assets with new ones. These assets could be a building, a new product or process, a new mine, or anything that can help the organization to achieve its objective. These ventures are projects by their nature. When a project is pronounced a success, the judgement is usually based on some factual evidence, although not every one uses the same data. From the literature, it is obvious that there is a lack of consensus and objectivity as to what constitutes a successful project. The purpose of this paper is to address the following questions: ?What constitutes a successful project? ? How does one measure project success? ?How can one work toward project success? This paper addresses the requirements for project success of three of the primary stakeholders of a project, namely the business or client, the employees as far as the project team is concerned, and the local community. Indicators are developed into a work breakdown structure (WBS)-like chart to demonstrate success indicators. These indices take cognisance of all the constituents required for project success. The indicators are further developed to take cognisance of the requirements of the local communities. These indices are then weighted to arrive at a total score for the respective stakeholders. Using these WBS models, the success and performance of a project can be evaluated. This score is considered an objective measure of project success. Projects are evaluated more consistently across different projects and the project manager is provided with a management tool that can assist him/her in ensuring greater project success. The shortcoming of this approach is that the weights of the different indices have been estimated at this stage. Research will have to be conducted to more accurately reflect the weights assigned to the indices.

The concentrations of selected trace elements (As, Cd, Hg, and Pb in run-of-mine (ROM) coal, discard, and coal product were investigated to assess the efficiency of beneficiation in reducing trace element concentrations and ascertain any implications regarding environmental compliance to regulatory frameworks. Samples were collected from a colliery in Mpumalanga Province twice a month for a period of 24 months. The samples were ashed to approximately 0.21 mm, then digested in a mixture of 70% HNO3 and 40% HF and analysed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Except for Pb, the mean concentration of all elements decreased from the ROM stage to the coal product stage. The order in which trace elements occurred from the highest to lowest throughout the production chain was Pb>As>Hg>Cd. With the exception of Cd, the mean trace element concentrations in the discard were above the total concentration threshold (TCT) set for landfill disposal. The As, Hg, and Cd concentrations in the product were well below the thresholds for all land uses. However, Pb concentrations in the product coal were above legal limits, which is of concern with regard to environmental compliance and the performance and marketability of the product.

Mineral processing plants have complicated control strategies, with different control layers, multiple interacting loops, and feedforward disturbance rejection. The complicated control strategies mean that oscillations can arise and propagate to multiple loops and degrade the control performance. Oscillation detection techniques, such as the spectral envelope method, can be applied to detect oscillations within an observation window. However, the start- and end-points of the oscillations within the observation window cannot be identified with current oscillation detection techniques. The start- and end-points would be useful to label the oscillatory intervals, and then to use these labels to identify process conditions associated with the oscillation. In this paper, a pattern recognition technique, Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN), was used to label oscillation intervals. An oscillation diagnosis workflow combining spectral envelope and DBSCAN was demonstrated on an industrial case study of oscillations in a flotation circuit concentrate sump. The workflow successfully detected the oscillation, labelled the oscillatory intervals, and enabled accurate root cause analysis. The impact of time series features, namely the signal power ratio () and the oscillation frequency, on the performance and optimal parameter selection of DBSCAN was also investigated. Low oscillation frequencies and low s negatively affected the performance of DBSCAN. Additionally, the results indicated that higher oscillation frequency was related to higher optimal values for the lag parameter. The present study focuses on utilising the electrocoagulation (EC) process for the treatment of process water generated in an iron ore beneficiation plant for safe discharge and reuse. Removal of heavy metals like Fe, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn and Pb which was found in higher concentration along with some other impurities exceeding the permissible and discharge limit were attempted. The influence of different electrode material, current density, inter-electrode distance, and solution conductivity was explored for effective removal of the metal ions. Experimental results infer that almost 99.95% Fe, 97.77% Cr, 73.44% Cu, 99.34% Pb and 88.69% Mn was removed using aluminum electrodes at monopolar mode at a current density of 68.50 A/m2, inter-electrode distance of 1 cm and solution conductivity of 1.033mS after 60 min of EC. In addition, removal of other toxins like TDS, turbidity, salinity and conductivity etc. was also assessed during the process. Removal of such heavy metal ions by EC was found to follow 1st order kinetics with electric energy consumption of 3.93 kWh/m3, electrode consumption of 0.1191 kg/m3 and operating cost of 0.6115 US$/m3 respectively. The paper ends with a description of various methods for the recovery of solvent, which is lost in the solvent-extraction process by entrainment and adsorption on solids and by dissolution.

HOWAT, B.Se., Ph.D., F.R.I.C., F.I.M. (Fellow) Factors affecting the precipitation of rutile from smelter slags were investigated, with particular reference to the effect of additions of phosphorus pentoxide to the slag. The phases were identified and the phase boundaries determined for slags having phosphorus pentoxide additions of 0 to 50 per cent. The liquidus temperatures of these slags were determined, and a pseudo-binary phase diagram was constructed. Rutile crystallized as the primary phase from melts having a phosphorus pentoxide content of more than IS,S per cent. Prismatic rutile crystals whose TiO. content was more than 97 per cent were grown from melts that had a phosphorus pentoxide addition of 30 per cent. However, the morphology of the precipitated rutile was such as to make subsequent separation impracticable.

The magnetic field characteristics due to electromagnetic stirring in the secondary cooling zone of an extra-thick slab during continuous casting are numerically determined using Maxwell's equations, with particular emphasis on the distribution of magnetic induction intensity and electromagnetic force, as well as the influence of process parameters on the magnetic field. The orientation of the electromagnetic force is the same when the electromagnetic stirrers at the 30° and 60° posistions of the arc-shaped slab are powered in the same direction; otherwise, the orientation is opposite. The magnetic induction at the centre of the section of the stirrer's central axis at the 30° positio, as well as the current, frequency, and fitting formulae, are as follows: B = {0.075I.(1/A)-0.3} mT and B = {-1.75f.(1/Hz)+22} mT. The electromagnetic force and current fitting formula at the central point of the B-B section is F = {0.03168I2.(1/A2)-03.762I.(1/A)+326.7} N/m3, and the fitting formula of electromagnetic force and frequency at the centre point is divided into two segments. The first takes the form of a parabola: = {-21((f-4.3).(1/Hz)2)+970} N/m3, and the second segment is negative linear: F = {-1.65f.(1/Hz)+51.5} N/m3.

This study has investigated the efficacy of the gravity beneficiation method based on gravitation and centrifugal forces for manganese ore. Powdered samples of manganese ores from the Unagad deposit in Mongolia were analysed for their element and mineralogical composition using ICP-MS and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The analysis presented the mineralogical compositions of the ores as hydro goethite, manganese minerals and magnetite, gangue minerals as quartz, albite, orthoclase and microcline of manganese ore. Manganese minerals are white in colour and have micro-veinlet, fine grained-aggregates associated with gangue minerals. The most important manganese minerals are hausmannite, pyrolusite, rhodochrosite, and manganosite. The composite of feed containing 17.31 % Mn and 36.3 % SiO2 was processed in a shaking table. In the experiment, a concentrate assaying 41.37% Mn was obtained from this composite with 65% recovery. In another experiment, f80=0.074 mm particle size ore was used in the MGS concentration test. A concentrate containing 38.34 % Mn with 75.2% recovery was produced in this experiment. The results showed that it is possible to obtain concentrate through gravity processing of manganese ore, which is an economically beneficial process for producing a product of a standard requirement. For a number of years the steel tube and pipe industry has worked on resolving problems of product quality. These have largely been resolved and new products have been developed to take advantage of new developments. To fully coordinate market acceptance guidance on use of galvanized piping was also required. This was largely achieved locally in 2004 with the publication by the SABS of ARP 060 - Guidance on the use and application of hot dip galvanized steel piping for the transportation of potable water in South Africa. Use of this document is not easy however and a need to have a simple computer model to assist the specifier was identified. Working with a major tube and pipe manufacturer this is now being developed and this paper will provide the background to the model?s development and its intended use. There is still a need for a partner Code of Practice on the performance of galvanized piping in buried conditions and the need for this will be highlighted together with current available information.

The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters. The controllable plant variables investigated were: ?Cyclone size ?Screen and hydro-cyclone cut points ?Medium cut density ?Feed particle size distribution.

It is not uncommon for gold slurry ponds or screen oversize dumps to contain several different types of carbon-rich contaminants. These contaminants act as robbers of dissolved gold which has a detrimental effect during the downstream carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processes. With a renewed interest in the reprocessing of contaminated gold waste ponds and dumps, preconcentration of the feed to either the CIL or CIP process becomes important to maximise profits from these resources. An added advantage in removing these resources, which were once thought of as being uneconomical, is the availability of land that can further be rehabilitated for community development projects. For gravity separation, an example of suitable technology is the Reflux Classifier (RC), which can be used for the separation of materials of different densities and can be used as a pre-concentration step. In this project, a laboratory-scale Reflux Classifier was used to pre-concentrate a gold-bearing sample obtained from a waste dump situated to the east of Johannesburg, South Africa. The material had an average gold grade of 1.9 g/ton and a carbon content of 10%. This material was first fed to a semi-batch Reflux Classifier that was used to fractionate it into several different density intervals by varying the fluidisation water feed rate, followed by continuous runs at fixed water flow rates. The results showed that a cumulative gold recovery of 60%, carbon recovery of 85%, and mass pull of 41% was possible for a fluidisation water feed rate of 15 L/min, while a rate of 20 L/min resulted in a gold recovery, carbon recovery and mass pull of 83%, 92% and 79% respectively, which translated into a concentrate gold grade above the set target of 3 g/ton. Continuous operation at 20 L/min yielded an underflow stream with 84% gold recovery at a grade of 5.4 g/ton. Keywords: Reflux Classification, gold recovery

The hydrodynamic characteristics of a mechanical flotation cell’s transportation zone have significant impact on its metallurgical performance, especially on coarse particles recovery efficiency. However, how to define and adjust the transportation zone was seldom investigated by researchers. In this paper a method will be introduced to define the boundary of the transportation zone by PIV measurement. It is found that the transportation zone can be extended upwards by enlarging the entire rotor-stator assembly from the bottom of tank and increasing the jet angle of the impeller. Two control methods have been validated in industry tests on KYF-160m3 and KYF-320m3 air-forced mechanical flotation cells. The result shows coarse particles recovery are both improved distinctly. It is suggested that enlarging the top transport boundary is able to helpful to reduce the floating distance of bubbleparticle aggregates, which contribute to improve coarse particle recovery in large flotation cells. "In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

At the De Beers Consolidates Mines operations it is common practices to perform Geotechnical mapping of the newly exposed faces in the waste and ore rock. The purpose of Geotechnical mapping is to quantify the in-situ fracturing of a rockmass that in turn is required during the planning and application of a mining method. Whether it is to determine slope angles, caveability, impact of blasting or support requirements. This mapping involved a cumbersome and time consuming procedure that requires individual examination and description of the natural inherent fractures exposed by mining. During highwall mapping in an open pit this can be a safety concern due to the duration of time spent below a highwall. The advantages gained through the recent introduction and application of SiroVision® allows safer mapping, an increase in statistical fracture population, archiving of rock faces and the more accurate reflection of the true mapping. This paper aims to describe in detail the application of the recently developed SiroVision®, photogrammetry software, to replace conventional face mapping. A De Beers Consolidated Mines, il est pratique courante de faire une cartographie géotechnique des tailles récemment exposées dans le rocher stérile ou minerai. Le but de la cartographie géotechnique est de quantifier la fracturation in-situ d’une masse rocheuse, qui sera nécessaire lors de la planification et application d’une méthode minière, que ce soit pour déterminer les angles des galeries inclinées, les possibilités de foudroyage, l’impact du dynamitage, ou les besoins en supports. Cette cartographie nécessitait une procédure longue et compliquée qui demande l’examen individuel et la description des fractures naturelles propres exposées par l’opération de mine. Pendant la cartographie de parois dans une exploitation à ciel ouvert, cette opération peut être dangereuse à cause du temps passé sous la paroi. Récemment, le lancement et application de Siro Vision apportent l’avantage d’une cartographie plus sûre, une augmentation des statistiques de population de fracture, l’archivage des tailles de roches, et le reflet plus précis de la cartographie. Le but de l’étude présente est de décrire en détail l’application du développement récent de Siro Vision, logiciel de photogrammétrie, pour remplacer la cartographie de taille conventionnelle. Bei den De Beers Consolidates Mines Operationen ist es gängige Praxis geotechnische Aufzeichungen des Taub- und Erzgesteins neu geöffneter Abbaustellen zu erstellen. Zweck dieser geotechnischen Aufzeichnungen ist die vor-Ort-Quantifizierung des Bruches der Gesteinsmasse, welche im Gegenzug während der Planung und der Anwendung einer Abbaumethode erforderlich ist, sei es um einen Neigungswinkel festzustellen, Abbaubarkeit, Auswirkung von Sprengungen oder Anforderungen an Unterstützungen. Die Aufzeichnungen waren mit umständlichen und zeitaufwendigen Prozeduren verbunden, die eine individuelle Prüfung und Beschreibung der durch den Abbau freigelegten natürlichen inhärenten Brüche, verlangten. Dies kann auf Grund des Zeitraumes der unterhalb einer Flözoberschicht verbringt wird zu einer Frage der Sicherheit werden wenn die Aufzeichnung einer Flözoberschicht im Tagbau erfolgt. Die Vorteile auf Grund der jüngst erfolgten Einführung und Anwendung der SiroVision® gestatten sichereres Aufzeichen, eine Zunahme in der statistischen Menge an Gesteinsbrüchen und eine akkuratere Reflektion der tatsächlichen Aufzeichnungen. Diese Arbeit hat zum Ziel im Detail die Anwendung der kürzlich entwickelten SiroVision®, eine photogrammetrische Software, die die konventionelle Abbauortaufzeichnung ersetzen soll zu beschreiben.

Reichert cone concentrators are used successfully in many applications, but have as yet not found favour in the gold mining industry on the Witwatersrand, because, for optimum operation, the cones need to have specially designed feed-preparation and circuit details. In addition, good liberation of the valuable minerals is essential. Gravity tests, in which a pilot plant was used on refractory gold ore, showed that 94 per cent of the gold could be extracted after gravity concentration and preferential grinding, roasting, and cyanidation of the concentrate, whereas 96 per cent could be extracted by flotation followed by the same preferential treatment. However, the capital and operating costs for gravity separation are expected to be considerably lower than those for flotation.

The theme of this Colloquium, survival strategies, not only conveys a sense of urgency but also takes cognizance of the fact that, as in the political arena, tough decisions have to be made and acted upon in the years to come. It is therefore appropriate that the SAIMM, as spokesman for the metallurgical industry, should be dealing with these issues at this time, and I wish to commend the organizers of this Colloquium for focusing on a mater as important as the future of this great industry. In view of this, I regard it as an honour and privilege to officiate on this occasion, where the best of South Africa's brain power in the metallurgical field will be harnessed with a view to moulding strategies for survival.

Methods are described by which increased production is achieved whilst retaining full availability of equipment and decreased refractory cost. Refractory materials have certain limitations, and when these limitations are known the variables in operating practice having the greatest impact on refractory life can be controlled. The most important factors to be closely controlled are porosity, chemical constitution of refractory materials, slag basicity, slag volume, FeO content of slag and temperature at which the process is operated. Knowledge of the process is invaluable in deciding on the type of refractory to be used. The types of refractories used in and the operating variables of the ironmaking, steel making and steel finishing units are described.
