As real-time air quality monitoring becomes more prevalent in US underground mines, it is important to provide the highest data reliability with the fewest possible sensors. Real-time sensors remain costly, and these costs are not exclusively financial; the time required to install, calibrate, and maintain real-time sensors poses a large barrier to widespread implementation. Current atmospheric monitoring systems typically rely on displaying point-specific values. This requires operators to infer real-time airborne contamination distributions. Monitoring and control software utilizing mine ventilation network (MVN) solvers has been implemented in limited cases because of their ability to simulate ventilation systems quickly, but these solvers use a one-dimensional representation of the mine, limiting spatial resolution of estimated distributions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has likewise been considered as a means to improve spatial resolution, but processing times prevent its use as a basis for monitoring and control. For the real-time monitoring of airborne contamination distributions, we propose a spatial interpolation method that can estimate the distribution of airborne contaminants in near-real time. This method provides a middle ground between fast processing times and increased spatial resolution. With the use of a pathfinding algorithm and optimization through absolute percentage error minimization, this method outperforms spatial interpolation with a Euclidean distance. By providing contamination distribution information to operators, this method and its derivatives stand to outperform current atmospheric monitoring systems.

The global emphasis on conserving energy resources has led to the adoption of hybrid power systems in vehicles. Optimally applied, hybrid systems can save up to 40% on fuel costs. To optimally manage a hybrid vehicle's energy flow it is necessary to know, in real time, all the energy requirements to complete a given route. The energy consumption depends mainly on the vehicle mass, speed profile, and route topography. Of these, the topographic profile is the one factor that is only route-dependent and not influenced by the vehicle or driving styles. The heading vs. distance profile is also an example of a route characteristic not influenced by the vehicle or driving style. In this study the topographic and heading profiles are used to identify routes, and are easily measured by means of digital barometric pressure and compass sensors. Correlations between the current route and previously travelled/stored routes are performed based on their topographic and heading profiles in a point-by-point manner. Above-ground tests were first performed using a road vehicle and six routes to evaluate the system. The system consistently and correctly identified a 20 km route within the first 4 km. It also proved to function correctly in underground tests through the implementation of an instrumented hand-held surveyor's wheel. This system finds direct practical application in optimizing the energy management of an underground hybrid locomotive used by the mining industry in South Africa, but can also be of benefit in applications where route identification is required and using GPS is not feasible.

Of the approximately 6,500 kimberlites known to date, less than 3% are diamondiferous and less than half of those are economically viable. Admittedly, this is a global figure and varies from area to area much depending on geological, logistical, and political circumstances. The number of diamond-bearing kimberlites is an important geobarometer, and an age-frequency profile has been compiled in order to identify diamond metallogenic epochs and provinces. Four primary diamond clusters have been recognized: Siberia (332-370Ma), Kaapvaal South(114-144Ma), Kaapvaal Southwest(84-95Ma), and Slave (52-55Ma). In addition, three secondary clusters are the Kaapvaal Central (S06-S38Ma), the Man Craton (139-lS3Ma) and the Kasai Craton (120-130Ma). The Kaapvaal is the only area where kimberlites with diamonds were discovered between 1870 and 1925, except for the Prairie Creek discovery in North America in 1906 and Colossus in Zimbabwe in 1907. Between 1906 and 1940 no major diamondiferous kimberlites were discovered, but many of Africa's alluvial deposits were found and exploited in that period. Advances in scientific prospecting in the 1940's rapidly accelerated the discovery rate that peaked in the 1990's; 39 diamondiferous occurrences were found in the 1980's, of which 8 became mines and 5 are in feasibility, and nearly 450ha of kimberlite was added to the global resource base. Despite the accelerated exploration expenditure, the last decade (e.g. 2000-2009) has been the leanest since the 1940's. The most important reason for this decline in exploration success is that any undiscovered deposits are largely buried by younger cover. Understanding complex and geophysical noisy basement geology, as well as decomposition of path-finder minerals are major challenges to further exploration success. Major investments in basic geological expertise and field research will have to be made in order to secure future diamond resources. Integrated geophysical studies, geochemistry diamond forensics, and improved imaging of Earth's upper mantle are perhaps foremost in this requirement, but the costs of these activities are such that government support will be required if countries are to sustain their diamond mining industry.

Zincor operates four Lurgi fluidized-bed roasters at its roast-leach-electrowin refinery in Springs, South Africa. In 2006, Zincor?s four roasters had reached ages ranging between 26 and 38 years, while the expected life of this type of roaster is generally 20 to 25 years. Roaster 3 was the first to be rebuilt in 2006 because its condition had deteriorated the most. Roaster 4 is being rebuilt in 2007 and the last two roasters will be rebuilt over the next few years as necessary. The main damage to Roaster 3 was caused by buckling of the roaster steel shell. This caused the freeboard and dome areas to shift, resulting in cracks in the dome brick lining and crumbling of the bricks lining the freeboard. The steel shell buckled owing to the combined effects of excessively high operating temperatures and corrosion. These were caused by the following two main factors: ?Thicker external insulation was installed during a previous maintenance shut, which resulted in an increased steel shell temperature and exacerbated the normal metal fatigue ?SO2/SO3 containing gas that had permeated the brick lining passed through its dew point during frequent planned and unplanned shuts over the life of the roaster. This caused acid formation between the refractory brick lining and steel shell, resulting in corrosion of the shell. The initial plan was to replace only the damaged areas of Roaster 3, but when it was dismantled more damage was found, and the roaster was rebuilding from the tuyeres upwards. During there building the opportunity was taken to modify the design of some of the brickwork to extend its life and make future repairs easier. This paper discusses the mode of failure of Roaster 3 and the lessons learnt during its dismantling and rebuilding.

Selective extraction through leaching of an amorphous slag obtained from a base metal smelter plant in Botswana is investigated in this paper, where the main objective is to optimise the experimental variables that would result in the maximum selective extraction of the three base metals (Ni, Cu and Co) from the slag waste. Mineralogical tests showed that the sample is composed mainly of fayalite (Fe2SiO4), with a total entrapped metal sulphides content of about 1.0 wt.% occurring as fine occlusions in the fayalite phase. In our experimental program, we compare the effectiveness of two common leaching techniques. In the first method, we use sulphuric acid to carry out atmospheric beaker leaching tests, and in the second method we use high pressure oxidative leaching. The effects of acid concentration, oxidant addition/oxygen partial pressure and pulp density on metal dissolution rate are examined. The optimal Ni, Cu, Co extractions of 80.5%, 81.9 and 98% respectively were obtained under high pressure oxidative leaching conditions (150 oC, 0.6 M H2SO4, 0.5 MPa O2), with substantially low dissolved Fe of 9.6%, the majority of which was removed as jarosite in the residue. Atmospheric beaker leaching yielded poor extractions of Ni below 40% when sulphuric acid combined with hydrogen peroxide (1.0 M and 0.6 M respectively, 65 oC) were used for leaching, while Fe, Cu and Co dissolutions were each about 80%. Therefore, using high pressure oxidative leaching provides a possibility to effectively extract Ni, Cu and Co while producing an environmentally benign residue, thus alleviating the current adverse environmental issues associated with the abandoned smelter slag. Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation and annually extracts 57 million tonnes of rock from 2 open pits. Over the past 3 years ~220 km of exploration drilling has been done, ~1000 km of rock face have been exposed for face mapping and over 7000 laboratory and field tests have been conducted. This has produced large amounts of geotechnical data to be utilised for feasibility studies, initial slope design and ongoing slope optimisation. It was necessary therefore to develop geotechnical databases to manage the vast amounts of data collected. SABLE and MineMapper 3D databases were created for logging and mapping respectively, with rock testing data incorporated into both. A pit inspections database was developed in MS Access and the existing groundwater and slope monitoring database was improved. The databases were linked to AutoCAD and Datamine to ensure that the latest geotechnical data is used for planning, draughting and modelling. The use of geotechnical databases ensures that no data is lost, standards are maintained and analysis can be easily performed. This increases the confidence of the analysis and allows the geotechnical engineers to optimise slope designs and blast designs on a regular basis. This reduces the risk of slope failure thus making the open pits more economical and safe.

"The effect of two refining slags (A: 1.0–1.8 CaO/Al2O3 ratio, 11–20 wt% SiO2; and B: 1.0–1.2 CaO/SiO2 ratio, 25–35 wt% Al2O3) on the inclusion morphology of a carbon structural steel (Q235B) was studied by controlling the balance between the steel and the refining slag at 1600ºC in a Si–Mo resistance laboratory furnace. The results showed that most of the inclusions in the molten steel balanced with slag A were formed by a lowmelting CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 system with a total oxygen content (T[O]) being fixed at 6–13 ppm. The inclusions in liquid steel balanced with the slag B were mostly formed by the CaO–MnO–Al2O3–SiO2 system, with T[O] controlled to 19–26 ppm. The overall size of the inclusions under balance conditions was higher in the steel reacted with the slag B than that reacted with slag A, with the latter showing more inclusions smaller than 3 um. In order to generate a large number of spherical CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 inclusions smaller than 3 ??m while decreasing the T[O] in the resulting steel, the composition of slag A should be used. This composition allowed improving the cleanliness of the slab, and is also advantageous for the castability of the molten steel. IntroductionThe sample used in this study was a typical carbon steel manufactured by CQ Steel. The galvanized, tinned, and plastic composite steel plates made of the original plates are used extensively for decorative panels, general dust pipes, drums, instrument cases, switchboxes, and train cars, among other uses. The target control composition is shown in Table I. The S and P contents are usually fixed during production below 0.020 and 0.025 wt%, respectively, with the aim of reducing longitudinal cracks on the slab surface."

We propose a layout design for the UG2 Reef where weak geological alteration layers are present. The collapse of the Everest platinum mine in South Africa indicated that these layers substantially weaken the pillars. The popular Hedley and Grant pillar strength formula cannot be used where these alteration layers are present. Underground investigations at Everest mine and numerical modelling of the layout were conducted using the TEXAN code and a limit equilibrium model. Simulations of a collapsed area and an intact area allowed for a preliminary calibration of the model. This was subsequently used to explore modified layouts for these ground conditions. An alternative is to compartmentalize the blocks of ore using barrier pillars. The numerical modelling predicted that the barrier pillars appear to remain stable even in the case of large-scale collapses, provided their width exceeds 25 m. Main access routes into the mine can be protected by a double row of pillars at least 15 m wide to provide a safe travelling way. As a cautionary note, these conclusions are based on the model calibration and this needs to be refined in future. Calibration of the limit equilibrium model remains a challenge owing to the large number of parameters involved.

INFACON 7, the seventh International Ferro Alloys Congress, took place in Trondheim, Norway, in June 1995. The main aim of the Congress, which was held under the auspices of Euroalliages and the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Organization, was to present the challenges facing the ferro-alloys industry on the road to the 21st century. Halyard Tveit, Chairman of the Technical Committee, summarized these as: ? the transition to a single global market economy ? new demands with regards to quality arising from customer needs, and ? increased awareness of the global environment. In the Plenary Sessions Kouichi Nakamura (Nippon Steel) outlined, from the steel industry's point of view, the relationship between technical advances in the products and more demanding ferro-alloy specifications. Advances in steel manufacturing technology and higher product quality have been supported in the past by raising the quality standards of ferro-alloys. Future requirements are bound to bring about more severe standards, and these need to be established by common agreement between both industries.

Since the early 1970s research has been ongoing to develop a cost-effective way of continuously mining the narrow reef, hard rock, typical of South African gold and platinum mines. In the late1980s it was shown that impact ripping was a practical solution for the deep gold mines. In March2001 Lonmin and Sandvik agreed to co-operate in an endeavour to design and manufacture a prototype narrow reef mining machine with the ultimate aim of producing such a machine on a commercial basis that would enable Lonmin to create a safer and more productive environment within its mines and for Sandvik to enhance its leading position as a supplier of a new generation hard rock cutting machine. This paper describes the developed technology, the current progress of the delivery of the required objectives and the optimum mining layout for the roll-out of the mining method.

The slag-tailings based artificial reef concrete (ARC) is made of CaO-CaSO4 activated granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) as cementitious material and deslimed gold ore tailings as aggregate. In order to investigate the potential application of the material as ARC, the strength development, hydration characteristics and application performance were investigated under different preparation conditions. Results indicated that using seawater as the mixing water can effectively promote the hydration of slag and generate a large amount of hydration products such as ettringite, CSH gel, hydrotalcite and Friedel ’s salt in the early curing period and so render the material with good early compressive strength. Seawater curing can also accelerate the hydration reaction in the early stage of hydration. The hydration reaction of slag and the compressive strength of ARC can be effectively promoted by increasing the specific surface area of slag. The 28-day compressive strength of the slag-tailings based ARC prepared with 30-50% CaO-CaSO4 activated slag and 50-70% tailings can reach to 19.88-42.87 MPa. Also, the material has a low surface pH value, good resistance to chloride ion penetration, and sulfate corrosion. Silicon Smelters consumes more than 80000 t/a of wood-derived charcoal as carbonaceous reductant in the production of silicon metal. More than 10% of this material is discarded as fines (<6 mm) generated due to abrasion during processing. Charcoal fine residues (<650 μm) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) binder were used in this study to produce mechanically strong charcoal briquettes for metallurgical application as carbonaceous reductant. The PVA binder was added in mass percentages of 1, 3, and 5 wt% to the charcoal fines. The compressive strength, abrasion resistance index (ARI), drop shatter resistance (SRI), and water resistance index (WRI) were measured as functions of curing for up to 7 days under atmospheric conditions, and the results compared with metallurgical grade coarse charcoal. The ash content of the produced briquettes was found to be high (6.6–8.0%) compared with the coarse charcoal (1–3%). The 3 and 5 wt% PVA-bound briquettes were found to be the strongest, with compressive strengths of 40 and 115 kg/cm2 respectively, with WRI values of 75 and 73% respectively. The produced briquettes were found to have lower ARI and SRI values compared to the coarse charcoal. Future work should include beneficiation of the fine charcoal discards prior to briquetting, and an increase in binder addition to above 6 wt% to improve the ARI and SRIn.

"Effective management and mitigation of pit slope instability in open pit mines begins with a comprehensive slope monitoring programme. The ability to differentiate between non-critical pit wall movements due to rebound or relaxation of the excavated slopes and movements that may be indicative of slope failure is important for maintaining a safe working environment and maximizing production. Slope failure prediction methods using velocity, acceleration, and strain criteria have been introduced and put into practice over the past few decades. Forty-eight slope failures with surface monitoring data are presented and assessed using the strain-based failure prediction approach, with consideration of the quality of the rock mass and the potential failure mechanism. The results indicate that the strain-based approach can be used to provide general guidance regarding strain thresholds for pit walls for a variety of failure modes in diverse geological environments. The advantages and potential drawbacks of the strain-based and other slope failure prediction methods are discussed. The importance of implementing a pit slope monitoring and performance evaluation system early in mine development is also emphasized. IntroductionThe successful prediction of the Manefay Slide pit slope failure at Bingham Canyon at 9:30 am on 10 April 2013 (Engineering and Mining Journal, 2014) highlighted the importance of having a comprehensive slope monitoring system that provides an accurate prediction of the time of failure of an open pit slope. Using most of the geotechnical monitoring tools available, the time of the failure was predicted within hours and equipment and personnel were evacuated from the pit well in advance of the failure. Visit to the Modderfontein factory of A. E. & C. I. Ltd 23rd November, 1972 A full programme was arranged to suit both the mining and metallurgical sections of the Institute. After refreshments were taken and visitors welcomed by the factory management we were split into two groups, viz metallurgical and mining. "Recent geological exploration at Rosh Pinah mine revealed that the mine’s major production is shifting towards the western orefield, which will increase the demand for air flow to be supplied to this area. A snapshot of the ventilation survey carried out in December 2014 at the western orefield drill drive B (WOF-DDRB) showed that the air flow was well below the required standards. In order to improve the existing conditions, possible options were considered and simulated using Ventsim™ software.The best option found was to replace the existing western orefield fans with the larger fans from the inactive southern orefield workings, to increase the air flow in the DDRB district. Simulation showed that as much as 20 m3/s of air can be received at the working faces of WOF 30, compared to the previously received amount of 1.37 m3/s. The economic analysis indicated that the above option can reduce the ventilation cost by N$1.9 million annually. It was also noticed that after implementing this option together with other projects, the ventilation conditions in the mine were greatly improved and currently give no cause for concern. IntroductionA good mine ventilation system should be capable of providing adequate quantity and quality of air to all working faces, and is critical to the occupational health, safety, and comfort of underground employees (Luxbacher and Ramani, 1977; Exikis and Kapageridis, 2006). No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; as the mine workings are extended, the ventilation characteristics such as system pressures, air volumes, leakages, and airway resistances change considerably. Continuous improvement of the ventilation system is needed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations (Lovejoy, 2010). It also ensures that the right quality and quantity of air is delivered to all the necessary areas at the lowest possible cost. This can be achieved by identifying inefficient airways and poorly ventilated areas in the mine and planning how best to upgrade them.The latest geological exploration shows that the focus of production at Rosh Pinah mine is shifting towards the western orefield (WOF). As mining progressed, the working areas have advanced away from the main fans, which increased the resistance to air flow drastically and resulted in increasing demands being imposed on the main fan in order to supply an adequate air flow. This process also created more leakage paths between the fan and the working areas, which has caused the air to short-circuit before it can reach the faces. Consequently, a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan so that the stipulated quantity reaches the face, which increases operating costs (Singh et al., 2004)."

This paper develops the themes explained at the previous SAIMM Platinum conference by Whittle and Burks1. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long- term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: ? An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated ? An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets ? An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated ? An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the Owner?s team.

Chemical assays collected from blast holes have the potential to greatly improve the local accuracy of grade models. Assays must be assigned to the correct domain or they will introduce errors. Boundary surfaces created from the widely spaced exploration holes (~50m) do not provide sufficient resolution to correctly delineate domain boundaries between closely spaced (3-5m) blast holes. This paper demonstrates a probabilistic method for classifying production blast holes near domain boundaries. Gaussian processes models are applied to identify the assays and assay ratios most suited to distinguishing particular domains. These models are combined with the exploration based surfaces to classify the blast holes that can be confidently assigned to a particular domain. A reiterative method is used, where information from the blast holes closest to the exploration holes is used to label blast holes further away. This is tested on two domain boundaries in a banded iron formation-hosted iron ore mine.

Nowadays the development of automatic on-line sampling systems has enabled large amounts of data to be available to plant managers. These data are inevitably prone to random and sometimes systematic errors. Data reconciliation methods are used to deal with random errors. In these methods, the measured data are adjusted in accordance to their error, so that the mass conservation law is satisfied at the same time. Measured data may also contain systematic errors, using these data in mass balancing software will result in inaccurate or even irrational results. In this paper three methods for detecting systematic errors (global test, node constraint test and maximum power constraint test) were presented. A step by step method to locate the systematic errors was demonstrated. Then, the new version of Movazen©, a mass balancing software, was introduced and used to locate systematic errors in the measurements taken from the Sarcheshmeh pilot plant copper flotation circuit.
