The Bureau of Mines investigated beryllium resources, production methods, and production costs to estimate the quantity of beryllium available for future use. Eight mining districts and 12 deposits are included in the study; lack of data precluded the evaluation of resources from 6 nonproducing and undeveloped deposits. The study revealed that demonstrated beryllium-bearing resources should be sufficient to meet domestic needs and those of other market economy countries (MEC's) well into the 21st century. Total demonstrated beryllium-bearing in situ resources from MEC's are estimated at 118 million metric tons (Mmt) of ore containing approximately 33,000 mt beryllium metal. Approximately 111 Mmt ore containing 29,000 mt beryllium was included in the cost analysis and availability sections of this study. Three Brazilian districts currently produce beryl ore, and one domestic company, Brush Wellman Inc., produces bertrandite ore. Brush Wellman Inc. owns and operates the only MEC facility in the Western Hemisphere for extracting beryllium values from beryl and bertrandite and is the beryllium industry's only fully integrated corporation.

In terms of a Research Proposals supported by a Grant Agreement dated 30 June 1973, the author was commissioned to prepare an annotated bibliography of mine fires. The main objective was to conduct a comprehensive program of library research and search of official files to prepare a list of articles dealing with actual occurrences of mine fires. This bibliography as now completed includes an annotated reference from each article or report cited, underlining the cause, extent, methods used, procedural errors made, results achieved, ventilation effects, and lessons learned from the operation of subduing the particular fire.

The Glacier Bay subarea is that part of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) within Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (GBNP). It is the western portion of the JMD and consists of the land between the Fairweather Range crest and the Takhinsha and Chilkat Ranges crests (excluding that land east of Excursion Inlet.) Figure B-1 shows the area. It is bounded on the north by the Alaska-British Columbia International boundary, to the south by Cross Sound and Icy Strait, and contains Glacier Bay. During 1975 -1977 the Bureau conducted a detailed study of the occurrences, prospects, and deposits in GBNP (B_4).2 This work was in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577). As a follow up to this earlier Bureau work, limited studies were conducted, during 1985 and 1986, as part of the JMD study. This report covers the most important aspects of the earlier studies and the 1985 and 1986 studies. ACCESS The Glacier Bay area may be reached through Gustavus airport, a paved strip which is serviced by scheduled jet airliners in the summer and air taxi services year-round. The airport is connected to Bartlett Cove (GBNP headquarters) by an all-weather road. No other roads exist in the area except a skid road to the LeRoy Mine and mill in the Reid Inlet area. Much of the Glacier Bay area is accessible through the salt water inlets and fjords which are part of Glacier Bay. Cruise ships, charter boats, and fishing boats visit these inlets and fjords during the summer months. Elevations within the area range from sea level to over 15,000 feet in the rugged Fairweather Mountain Range. More remote areas are accessible by small boat, foot, or helicopter. Glacier ice is a year-round hazard to navigation in Glacier Bay, and during the winter months some of the more northerly inlets are frozen.

Energy consumption in domes tic copper production has increased nearly 60 percent in the last 10 years, reaching approximately 175 trillion Btu in 1973. Energy required to produce 1 pound of copper rose from nearly 41,000 Btu in 1963 to nearly 50,000 Btu in 1973. Production from lower grade ores and strict pollution control regulations have contributed to this increase. Each stage of copper production has been analyzed to determine total energy consumed, energy mix required, cost of the energy, and recent or proposed changes in operations which may affect the consumption of energy by the copper industry. Data have been gathered from a recent Bureau of Mines canvass of the industry, from visits to copper operations, and from conversations with copper industry officials.

This Bureau of Mines report examines aggregate trends in foreign direct investment in the U.S. mining and mineral processing industries between 1977 and 1984, and provides an analysis of foreign investment in several major mineral commodity industries. In 1984, 11.1 pct of total employment in the U.S. minerals industry was at firms that were U.S. affiliates of foreign firms. In 1985, the proportion of U.S. capacity held by foreign investors in nine major mineral commodity industries was as follows: steel, 5 pct; silver, 16 pct; lead, 18 pct; aluminum, 25 pct; zinc, 26 pct ; copper, 30 pet; cement, 32: pct; gold, 44 pct; and ferroalloys, 56 pct. Almost 90 pct of the total foreign investment in the U.S. minerals industry was accounted for by eight countries-Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, and the Republic of South Africa. The most fundamental reason behind the growth in foreign investment in the U.S. minerals industry has been that an increasing proportion of U.S. mineral firms and assets have been for safe, while foreign mineral companies have been the ones most willing and able to purchase these firms and/or their assets. mile the growth in foreign ownership in the minerals industry has not been without controversy, it has helped save jobs, reduce the minerals trade deficit, and- from the national defense perspective-maintain the Nation's overall mineral and metal self-sufficiency at reasonably high levels. In the absence of domestic buyers, foreign investors have helped to maintain a viable domestic minerals industry.

This study compiles data on the zircon resources of the Pacific Northwest States, Alaska, and California, to determine the productive capability of industrial concerns to make ductile zirconium and hafnium, and to investigate markets for the nonmetallic products of zircon. West coast zircon resources are large but mostly marginal to submarginal. Development of a stable and profitable zircon mining industry on the west coast will depend upon recovery and utilization of the other associated heavy minerals needed by regional and national markets. The west coast has the only completely integrated facility for processing zircon sand to reactor-grade zirconium and hafnium and for making fabricated products from these metals. The future of the zirconium metal industry appears to be good because of increased use of the metal for nuclear propulsion and power-generating plants.

[The Bureau of rides is making a general study of the occurrence of the Clinton red iron ores of Alabama. In the course of this study, it developed that the iron-ore seams of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas were virtually unexplored., and the nature and extent of the ore deposits were undetermined. As a part of the work of the project, the Bureau investigated the occurrence of red iron ore in the .areas. Eighty-four channel samples, representing 317.6 linear feet, were taken from l2 locations along the outcrop of the red iron-ore seams, Ten diamond-drill holes, amounting to 3915.5 linear feet, were drilled. In these areas, commercial- and marginal-grade ores of minable thickness have been shown. It is estimated that 4,500,000 tons of indicated ore and 6,700,000 tens of inferred commercial-grade ore averaging 5.1 feet thick, 47.6 percent Fe, 26.1 percent insoluble, 0.1 percent CaO, and 0.04 percent P; 7,200,000 tins of inferred marginal grade ore averaging 6.1 feet thick, 36.2 percent Fe, .35.0 percent insoluble, 3.9 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P; and 18,500,000 tons of ferruginous sandstone averaging 12.2 feet thick, 19.2 percent re, 50.1 percent insoluble, 9.6 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P are present in the areas.. All tonnages are estimated as gross tons of recoverable ore in place, based' on 65-percent mining recovery. In accordance with established policy of the Bureau of Mines of publishing factual data as soon as possible after completion of field work, this description of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas is presented. Research workers From the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives in Pittsburgh, Pa., on January 22, 1975, to discuss the results of research under the Bureau of Mines Noise Control Program. The program, aimed at reducing noise in mines, is functionally divided into three major areas: Instrumentation, personal protection, and noise abatement. This proceedings contains the opening remarks to the seminar and seven technical presentations based on various aspects of noise abatement and control.

During recent years, the Bureau of Mines has conducted an extensive investigation of the materials for making iron and steel. This work includes iron ore concentration, agglomeration, direct reduction of iron ores and concentrates, the production of pure manganese, chromium, and cobalt by electrolytic processes, the production of ferroalloys from low-grade domestic ores, and the development of special alloys to utilize these products. As a part of this general program, a Congressional appropriation allowed the con¬struction of an electric-furnace, semicommercial, ingot-producing plant at Shasta Dam near Redding, Calif. The primary objectives of the pilot plant were to determine the costs and operating problems involved in the production of steel and ferrous alloys in which sponge iron was used as melting stock, and to determine the physical properties of the materials produced. The pilot-plant equipment and the results of sponge iron-melting tests in the basic lined, electric arc furnace have been reported in previous publications.3/4/

This circular is concerned with eight nonferrous scrap metals as they generated, collected, prepared, and consumed in California. Brief reference also is included with respect to Nevada and Hawaii. Four of these scrap metals - copper, lead, aluminum, and zinc - are of major importance and make up about 95 percent of the total value, whereas the remaining four - antimony, magnesium, nickel, and tin - make up the remaining 5 percent. For convenience, the subject matter is divided into three parts, (1) Data with respect to the collection, preparation, and marketing practices that are common activities to all the nonferrous scrap metals; (2) separate discussions and statistical data with respect to each of the eight nonferrous scrap metals in California; and (3) data with respect to Nevada and Hawaii.

"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control. In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Pyramid RARE II area (No. 5023) covering 23,500 acres (9,500 ha) of E1 Dorado National Forest and 7,900 acres (3,200 ha) of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (fig. 1). The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal mineral deposits in the area. Samples taken from silicified and limonite-stained metasedimentary rocks and aplite dikes were void of precious or base metals or uranium. Placer samples from stream gravels contained no gold values. Molybdenite occurs in quartz stringers within quartz monzonite near Grass Lake, adjacent to the area; no extension; were found in the area.

In 2005, a total of 2,063 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Coal mines comprised 14.1% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.6% (n=1,911) and anthracite mines 7.4% (n=152) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 70% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (28.0%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.6%).

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1987 was $446.6 million, an increase over that of 1986 and the first increase in 3 years. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of bauxite and ferroalloys; third in bentonite, crushed dolomite, crushed marble, and fire clay; and fourth in masonry cement. Trends and Developments.-Employment in the minerals industry remained relatively low for the second year even though the overall unemployment rate dropped to 7.9% by December. Employment in mining and primary metals dropped about 10% and 2%, respectively.

The report provides a detailed analysis of 23 electrical accident countermeasures contemplated for use in the metal/non-metal mining industry. The costs and potential benefits of implementing groups of these countermeasures are estimated, and methods arc outlined by which the operator ran choose countermeasures in an effective manner. The analysis is based largely on an extensive electrical accident event tree which is developed in detail. For those countermeasures which are not currently technically feasible, several prototype devices were developed to help speed development. These included a trolley arc eliminator and a safer mine electricians multimeter.

During and immediately following World War II, the heavy demands for steel required the mining of unusually large quantities of coal for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The largest demand for metallurgical coke is in the Appalachian region, which comprises central and western Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. This demand is satisfied by coke made from coals within the region; consequently, the reserves of coking coal in this region are being depleted more rapidly than reserves in other coal-producing regions. The supply A' high-quality coking coal during the war was inadequate, and some coke were forced to use inferior coals. The coke produced from these inferior coals adversely affected the rate of production. Another national emergency probably would produce a similar condition, and in the interest of -national security, the Munitions Board of the National Military Establishment requested the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the reserves of coals suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. All bituminous coals in the Appalachian region are coking, and as the coal that produces the better metallurgical coke become depleted, other coal previously considered inferior will be used. The general trend is toward the use of lower-quality coals for metallurgical purposes.

[THE LITERATURE contains relatively few thermodynamic values for interoxidic compounds, and these often are unreliable. This is especially true of data for ferrites and aluminates for which heat of formation determinations may involve extreme experimental difficulties. This report contains the results of new experimental work for obtaining the heats of formation of five ferrites (Ca2Fe2O5, CaFe2O4, MgFe2O4,, NaFeO2, and LiFeO2) and one aluminate (CaAl4O7), and a review and revision of previous similar work of this laboratory on five aluminates (Ca3A12O6,, 12/7 CaO-Al2O3, CaAl2O4, NaA1O2, and LiAlO2), The results for the 11 compounds are combined with entropy and high-temperature heat content data to derive tables of heats and free energies of formation (both from the oxides and from the elements) for the temperature range 298° 1,800° K, The relative stabilities of the compounds are discussed. The presented data all have application to ceramic reactions, and those for the calcium and sodium aluminates are applicable in considering soda-lime sintering processes for extracting alumina from silicate minerals such as day and labradorite.]
