It is a case study of huge rock-mass, loosened out from the parent rock-body, & posing a potential danger to structures down below the slope on which this rock mass was standing. Case was dealt in two phases, by tying/stitching the rock mass to the parent rockbody and breaking it using controlled blasting technique.

Blasting has been completed when the lawyer calls to say that a landowner has filed a suit alleging damages to the roof of his home. Mitigation talks fail to produce an adequate resolution and the case goes to court. The blaster has pictures of the area made after the blasting was done showing the good condition of the roof. However the judge fails to allow the photographs to be entered as evidence and the homeowner wins the case.

With the ever increasing public sensitivity to our environment, the blasting industry can no longer be concerned with just drilling and blasting. Government regulations, augmented by public pressure, require that the industry must be more diligent in preventing spills, disposing of distressed products and packaging materials, controlling fumes and dust, preventing product contamination, developing environmental impact studies, and preventing unnecessary regulations. Confined explosives upon detonation produce a chemical reaction generating expanding gases that result in fragmentation of matrix a chemical to mechanical transition. A 100% energy conversion during transition is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. There are numerous variables that affect energy transition. Although fragmentation is the most often used criteria to determine shot efficiency, the escaping energy profile provides additional data as to the efficiency of a blast. This paper reviews empirical and analytical information about window breakage due to airblast. As is the case with damage to structures caused by ground vibrations, a fixed break/no break threshold is inapplicable and window damage must be expressed in terms of a statistical probability. Repelling charges are small explosive charges detonated to frighten and drive fish away from a blasting zone just prior to detonation of a major explosive charge. Use of repelling charges has been recommended by natural resource agencies to mitigate the effects of submerged explosives. Blasting companies have used this technique in a "good faith effort" to reduce potential damages to aquatic resources. It has been assumed that noise or pressure generated by the small charge will drive fish from the immediate area, thereby reducing impacts from the much larger and potentially more-damaging blast.

The advent of more powerful explosives, increased bench heights, and larger diameter blastholes has necessitated the use of presplitting techniques in sub-bituminous coal mines. The combination of these factors has increased the energy concentration during blasting, producing severe overbreak problems in the final pit walls. Presplitting with large diameter blastholes has proven to be the most viable method of reducing back break in sub-bituminous coal mines.

This paper summarizes flyrock and blast area security fatalities from 1989 to 1999 and examines the causative factors. Coal and nonmetal mining used about 43 billion pounds of explosives and blasting agents between1989 to 1999. A majority of this consumption was used at surface mines. Accident data indicates that flyrock and lack of blast area security were the primary causes of blasting related injuries in surface mining. Fatal injuries due to lack of blast area security were attributed to: failure to clear blast area; failure to follow instructions; inadequate guarding; inadequate blasting shelter; and unsafe location.

There have been many different brands of high precision caps introduced on the US market in the last five years. High precision timing definitely effects the performance of the blast. One should be able to optimize fragmentation and minimize environmental effects with the use of high precision caps and selection of the proper time period. The consumer who purchases the caps may not be fully aware of the tolerances in firing times of caps used in the field. This paper will discuss results of field tests of cap tolerances from an independent study conducted by Precision Blasting Services.

SYNCRUDE CANADA LTD.. operates the largest synthetic crude oil production facility in the world. Over 60,000,000 Bank Cubic Metres of oil sand is mined each year from their open pit located in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Despite the extremely cold temperatures encountered during the winter months and the problems associated with frost buildup, SYNCRUDE has continued to operate on a 12 month per year basis. In 1989 SYNCRUDE mine management embarked on a comprehensive Frost Blasting program to improve mine production of their oil sand moving equipment. The following paper will discuss the development of their frost blasting program to its current status.
