Pentlandite samples were obtained as Ni concentrate from three Canadian plants and one specimen sample from Ward?s Scientific Establishment. The samples were upgraded using gravity and magnetic separation techniques. Nickel concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Microprobe analysis identified a range in Co and Cu lattice substitutions. All samples exhibited similar zeta potential-pH trend with isoelectric points from 2 to 3, and similar responses to copper activation and addition of xanthate. The similar trends indicate that the variations in lattice substitution identified have no significant effect on electrokinetic properties; that is, samples from any source likely yield results that can be generalized.

This is a tutorial paper on industrially successful approaches for nonlinear process monitoring. Online process monitoring is essential to continuous operation of plants at high efficiency. The problem of process monitoring is one where an impending but undesirable process condition has to be identified and used to alert process engineers. This problem has traditionally been solved by practicing engineers using statistical techniques that detect a change in the underlying correlation structure of process variables. For linear correlation structures, algorithms such as principal components analysis, independent component analysis and partial least squares have been proposed. However, many industrial processes exhibit nonlinear correlation structure between the process variables. In this tutorial we describe various nonlinear monitoring techniques and elaborate on two recently developed methods, namely Support Vector Machine and Local Linear Embedding. The two methods are evaluated by application on two experimental case studies, a SAG mill and a polymer extruder.

In many cases, the use of hydrocyclone control is desirable for the stabilization of separation in the setting of changing feed conditions. Control concepts based on exact mathematical models are not satisfactory due to the complexity of the physical process. In this case, fuzzy control is a suitable solution. The data are primarily derived from an optical sensor that monitors the outside view of the free underflow stream. A throttling valve, serving as an actuator, is installed in the overflow pipe that regulates the volume split of the cyclone. Applications in closed circuit grinding and in separation plants for tunnel driving, fine sand dewatering, and classification of kaolin demonstrate the typical use of this development. Additionally, the technological characteristics of the cyclone may be improved by this control, which is mainly caused by the increased discharge capacity of the un-der flow nozzle. A further advantage is the option to operate at an optimal operation point. In many cases, this point is located at the transition spray/rope discharge. The improved operation characteristics present new options for extensive applications of fuzzy cyclone control.

This paper presents the outcomes of the preliminary investigation focused on the potential usage of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in minerals processing. Currently, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy has been successfully employed in the characterization of multilayer structures formed as molecules adsorb on flat surfaces and is commonly used in bio-related research. Few studies have explored the application of EIS in minerals processing, particularly for mineral particles and flotation systems. In the first series of tests, the impedance response was investigated as a function of particle size, shape and hydrophobicity using model quartz particles. The particle size fractions and the shape were found to contribute to the impedance response. The more hydrophobic quartz particles resulted in a higher impedance values. Further tests involved pure sulfide minerals including chalcocite, bornite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. The AC impedance measurements were conducted as a function of collector (sodium ethyl xanthate) dosage. The AC Impedance data was modeled using the combination of reference circuits. It has been shown that adsorption of collector onto sulfide minerals surfaces results in a higher magnitude of impedance. Increasing the collector dosage resulted in an increase in AC impedance for chalcopyrite, while a decrease was observed for chalcocite. Significant variations in impedance were exhibited by bornite and pyrite with a gradual increase in collector dosage.

"The leaching of base and precious metal ores and concentrates continues to progress in both laboratory study and industrial application. These developments are being driven by the need to respond to difficult ores and concentrates that are not amenable to conventional treatment. In many cases alternatives are being developed to conventional treatment (e.g. Pyrometallurgy) for technical and economic reasons.In this paper, a brief general review of some new developments in leaching will be followed by a more detailed explanation of three process developments that have either been industrially applied or are expected to be applied in a short time frame. The three processes to be reviewed in detail are the Mt. Gordon Copper Process, the Anglo American Corporation/University of British Columbia Copper Process and the PLATSOL Process. These leaching processes operate at low (90°C), medium (150°C) and high (220°C) temperature and are successful in quickly and completely extracting metal values from ores and concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe process of leaching is widely used in hydrometallurgy to selectively recover a metal of interest from an ore or a concentrate. Leaching and by extension hydrometallurgy is well established in the recovery of copper (copper heap leach ? SX-EW), nickel (Moa Bay and Caron process), zinc (roast ? leach ? electrowin and zinc pressure leach), gold (cyanidation) and uranium (acid sulfate leach). Of course this success extends to many of the metals found in nature. Recently, the importance of hydrometallurgy appears to be increasing with hydrometallurgy viewed as an attractive alternative to both traditional mineral processing and conventional smelting/converting/refining. This increasing interest has led to intensive study and increasing application. Selected developments include:Copper ? the Mt. Gordon process and new concentrate processes such as INTEC, Activox, CESL, Dynatec, Total Pressure Oxidation, MIM Albion, BioCop, and the AAC/UBC Process.Nickel ? Voisey Bay process for hydrometallurgical treatment of Voisey Bay concentrate, HPAL processing of laterites at Murrin Murrin, Bulong and Cawse, atmospheric leaching of laterites, heap bioleaching of nickel sulfides by Titan Resources (Australia).Zinc ? establishment of zinc leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning technology for treatment of the Skorpion deposit in Namibia, new developments in atmospheric and pressure leaching, the Hydrozinc process.Gold ? development of a number of thiosulfate leaching processes for recovery of gold from refractory carbonaceous ores or concentrates."

"Multimetal gold-antimony ores are complexed processing products, since they are characterized by veindisseminatedsulfide mineralization with fine-dispersed submicroscopic gold, low content and uneven distribution ofAu, which is concentrated together with iron sulfides (pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite). Such ores are classified asrefractory ones and characterized by low gold recovery rates during cyanation. A particular feature of gold-antimonydeposits is the presence of antimony in industrial concentrations therein, along with gold that significantly increasesthe value of these deposits. The main antimony mineral is antimony sulfide - antimonite (stibnite). Gold-antimonyores undergo flotation concentration with producing collective gold-containing concentrates or gold sulfide andantimony concentrates. The purpose of the work is an experimental study of the flotation separation mechanism ofsulfide minerals of copper, antimony and arsenic using tannin-containing modifiers during processing of multimetalgold-bearing ores. During the research it was established that for the selective separation of antimony and arsenicsulfide minerals into concentrates of different kinds, it is possible to use vegetable reagents capable to be selectivelyadsorbed on the arsenopyrite surface. Using the laser KEYENCE VK-9700 and electronic LEO-1420 VP INCA-350microscopy methods, it has been established that the film of a vegetable modifier was not washed off with water andfixed firmly enough on the surface of the polished sections of arsenopyrite. In the X-ray spectrum there are C and Obands related to the reagent structure. The vegetative reagent is fixed both on the pre-adsorbed phase of the collectorand on the areas free from the collector. On the polished sections of antimonite before and after a contact with thetannin solution, only partial adsorbed tannin phases are detected, which disappear as a result of subsequent washingwith water.The reported study was funded by RFBR according to the research project ? 16-05-00646 ?."

An ingenious methodology purposively developed by the authors for comprehensive assessment of flotation properties, electrophysical characteristics and. crystal chemistry features of natural gold-bearing sulfide minerals of different origin has been used in this study. Examination of the elemental composition of the minerals, ion-molecular components of the liquid phase in suspensions, surface properties of sulfides and different flotation reagents sorption forms was performed using the methods of X-ray phase and spectral analysis, potentiometry, UV and IR spectrometry, computer image analysis, and computer simulation techniques. The role of isomorphous impurities in the formation of hydrophobic sulfhydric collector layers on mineral surfaces in complex ore processing has been elucidated. The parameters characterizing the variability of the Fe:S ratio in pyrite of different origin have been determined based on non-stoichiometry characteristics of natural gold-bearing sulfide crystals. An ingenious method of formatting and linear approximation of experimental data was used to find out the quantitative relationships between the impurity content, electrophysical characteristics, non-stoichiometry and floatability of pyrite from a number of different deposits. The effect of the impurity species present in sulfides on the characteristic pH value marking the floatability peaks as such and their trend of shift towards higher alkalinity has been revealed. A theoretical substantiation has been given to prognostic assessment criteria for processing characteristics of gold-bearing sulfide minerals with varying composition. New flotation reagents and advanced reagent systems which help to increase the contrast of processing characteristics for different gold-bearing sulfides, resulting in improved selectivity, have been developed. The mechanism of selective flotation of precious metal-bearing Fe and As sulfides achieved by using short-chain dithiocarbamates and a mixture of cyclic trithiocarbonate with oxyalkylsulfides has been analyzed.

Eight oil sand ores with the bitumen content ranging between 3.6 and 15 wt.% and the fines content (-44 micrometers size fraction) between 9 and 69 vol.% were subjected to the standard alkali extraction test used to measure the degree of oxidation of metallurgical coals. The results showed that there is a strong correlation between the absorbance of extracted solutions at a wavelength of 520 nm and the ratio of the fines content to the bitumen content. The latter factor is directly relevant to assessing the extractability of bitumen from oil sand ores. Bitumen extraction tests showed that the bitumen recovery decreased from 90 % to 30 % when the absorbance at 520 nm increased from 0.23 to 0.64. A comparison of the UV/visible spectra of solutions obtained from the alkali extraction tests with solutions of Aldrich Humic Acids suggest that low bitumen/high fines oil sand ores release substantial amounts of organic matter very similar, if not identical, to humic acids. In contrast, high-bitumen and low-fines ores do not release as much of the organic matter, and UV spectra of these leached substances are quite different from those of humic acids. Overall, the results show that chemical composition of bitumen in the tested ores varies greatly with ore type and oxidation, and that the alkali extraction test is a promising technique to quickly assess the extractability of bitumen from a given ore type.

For optimization of diamond processing technology the influence of nanosecond high voltage pulses on mechanical and technological properties of diamond crystals and kimberlite rock-forming minerals (calcite, olivine, serpentine) was investigated. Using methods of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), microscopy and mikrohardness measurement the changes of structural, physic-chemical surface properties, and microhardness of minerals as the result of impacts, was studied. Non-thermal impacts caused a decrease of kimberlite rock-forming minerals microhardness in general to 40-66% as the result of surface microstructure destruction which is caused by formation of micro cracks, traces of surface breakdown and other defects. At the same time, the pulse energy impact on natural diamonds led to formation of B2 type crystal lattice microsift defects, elevated concentration of which increases the hardness properties of crystals. The obtained result indicates possibility of applying pulsed energy effects to improve the softening efficiency of diamond-bearing kimberlites rock-forming minerals without damaging the diamond crystals and ensuring their preservation by the subsequent grinding of ores. By IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that processing by hight voltage pulses causes a change of natural and synthetic diamonds surface functional cover composition. Short-term exposure (~ 10 - 30) leads to detachment and partial destruction of secondary phases mineral films on the surface of natural technical diamonds, increasing floatability and hydrophobicity of crystals. However, with increasing duration of treatment (~ 30 - 150) occurs surface hydroxylation (found by XPS for synthetic diamonds), as a result of diamond surface layer oxidation. The effect of increasing the natural diamonds flotation activity by 14% (from 47% to 61%) was experimentally established as a result of processing diamond crystals with nanosecond pulses (~ 10-50 sec), which indicates the principal possibility of using pulsed energy impacts to intensify the diamond flotation during processing diamond-bearing kimberlites.

In heap leaching the transport of the acid from the drippers to the surface of the ore particles is a major factor in the overall performance of a heap. This flow behavior is complex as the flow is unsaturated and occurs along a tortuous set of inter-particle channels and connections. Previous modeling of this system has used equations from oil and ground water flow to model these systems, but the applicability of these models with the larger particles found in typical heaps is suspect as these systems are not necessarily capillary dominated. In particular, as the characteristic particle size goes from below to above a few centimeters, the flow changes from capillary to gravity dominated. This means that typical heap leaching heaps cover this interesting, but complex, transitional fluid flow regime. In this paper a set of experimental studies of this flow, including PEPT (positron emission particle tracking) based tracer experiments, highly accurate liquid holdup measurements and axial dispersion experiments using salt tracers will be presented. In this study, flow through mono-dispersed particle beds was carried out. In particular, the hysteresis in the liquid holdup as the liquid flow rate into the particle bed is varied is investigated, since this hysteresis means that the relationship between flow rate and holdup is history dependent, an effect not included in models currently used to describe fluid flow in heaps. "The effect of EPS components namely protein, polysaccharide and biosurfactant purified from Pseudomonas fluorescens was investigated for the bioremediation of Pb(II) ions in aqueous solution. Two parameters, namely the amount of EPS component and the concentration of Pb(II) ions were optimized for maximum Pb(II) ions uptake. The EPS components interacted with Pb(II) ions were characterized using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) to ascertain the presence of Pb and by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) to reveal the functional groups involved in Pb(II) binding. The maximum Pb(II) binding capacities of protein, polysaccharide and biosurfactant were found to be 11.4, 0.55 and 0.11 mg mg-1 respectively. The biosorption processes followed the Langmuir model. The Gibbs free energy (?G0) values of -23.6, -20.9 and -23.2 kJ mol-1 for Pb(II) biosorption by protein, polysaccharide and biosurfactant respectively, attested to spontaneous, chemisorption processes. The ATR–FTIR results revealed the presence and involvement of amino, hydroxyl, carboxyl, phosphate, and methyl functional groups in Pb(II) binding and EDAX analysis confirmed the interaction of Pb with EPS components. The Pb(II) binding mechanisms of EPS have been discussed. The results demonstrate the potential of the purified EPS components of P. fluorescens for removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution INTRODUCTION Waste water containing toxic metals from various industries pose a serious threat to human health and ecosystem. For treating such waste water, conventional methods like chemical precipitation, coagulation, evaporative recovery, electrodialysis, floatation, flocculation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration are used (Lakherwal et al., 2014). These methods have some disadvantages like toxic sludge generation, incomplete metal removal and high cost (Singh and Gadi, 2012), necessitating the search for cheaper and efficient alternative methods. Bioremediation is one of the emerging alternatives where bacteria, fungi, yeast, algae and other biological substances are used as sorbents to remove toxic heavy metals (Vijayaraghavan, et al., 2015). Recently, the bioremediation potential of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of microbial origin has attracted attention. However, for Pb(II) removal, there is a paucity of literature focusing on EPS."

The studies carried out by the Russian researchers and those carried out jointly within some contracts with scientific organizations and companies of other countries, show that the electric pulse disintegration of materials (ED), proposed and investigated in detail in Russia (Kalyatsky, et al, 1980; Usov et al, 1987; Semkin et al, 1995; Usov and Tsukerman, 2000; Kurets et al, 2002) has been widely recognized and developed abroad (Andres, 1995; Inoue et al, 2000; Biela et al, 2008). The Russian and international journals and the proceedings of the conferences dealing with the electric pulse disintegration pay great attention to the principal principals of selective disintegration of materials. There is no, however, any information concerning both the technical means developed to implement the technique and the assessment of their performance, which would be necessary in objective assessment of the industrial use of the technology. The results of long-term studies of the technique and technologies of electric pulse disaggregation by research institutes such as Research Institute of High Voltages (Tomsk), Kola Science Centre of RAS (Apatity), Institute "Mekhanobr"(S.Pertersburg) described. Exploratory stands and technological installations are developed to carry out pilot tests and operations under production conditions. Basic circuits and classification of technical means electric pulse disintegration of the materials are proposed, the analysis of transportation schemes and classification of the material in the disintegration apparatus are given, construction of chambers for continuous stadial disintegration of ores and materials are presented. The features and technological efficiency of electric pulse disintegration of various types of ores, and the spheres of effective use of the method have been determined. Indian National Steel Policy envisages ambitious three fold rise in steel production by the year 2020. This paper covers the iron ore industry in India which cater to the need of iron ore requirement of Indian iron and steel sector as well as export commitment in addition to addressing the industry?s key concern to attain the same. The main contents are (i) resources and its exploitation; covering status of exploration, reserves and resources, province wise occurrences, distribution, nature of mineralization and generation of fines, etc ; (ii) use of iron ore in iron and steel making, covering physical and chemical requirements for pig iron and sponge iron production; (iii) ore characteristics and beneficiation practice in vogue; (iv) projected steel demand and requirement of quality iron ore and provision thereof; (v) recovery of iron values from in situ low-grade ores and stacked fine rejects (-10/-6 mm) inclusive of slimes (-0.15 mm) from tailing ponds; (vi) agglomeration of fine concentrates preferably by pelletization; (vii) measures to augment iron ore availability for future requirements.

"NPO RIVS employs complex approach to engineering and design of the new facilities in close cooperation of Mining, Research, Hydrometallurgy, Design, Construction, Power Supply, Automation, Production and other departments. General Design Contractor (and then General Contractor) is directly involved in geological exploration, engineering surveys, floatability studies, feasibility study of process solutions and construction options. It delivers greenfield project and guarantee its efficient performance in future. Shiralgin is a small gold and copper deposit, gold average grade is 4.7 g/t. RIVS departments have studied ore floatability, developed process procedures for design and performed pilot testing. Construction of integrated plant including ore crushing and grinding, flotation and hydrometallurgy units with Dore gold production of 5 000 thousand tons ore per year (66.7 t/h) is recognized as economically viable. The technology used of separate dry stockpiling of flotation tailings and cyanidation tailings. Water circuit for concentration and hydrometallurgy is separated, too. Process design was performed based on BIM software like Autodesk Revit, Civil 3D, Rocscience slide using process procedures developed by RIVS Research units. Engineers provided modeling of primary crushing unit, coarse ore storage, main building (including grinding, flotation, thickening, filtration, loading, hydrometallurgy), tailings thickening unit, building for reagent storage and conditioning, tailings pond for dry stockpiling of flotation tailings and cyanidation tailings, sedimentation ponds, laboratories, infrastructure including Administration building and camp. Payback period is 3.5 years. 3D model of facility is currently stored at the State Agency of Geology and Mineral Resources affiliated to the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.INTRODUCTION The Kyrgyz Republic has substantial potential of mineral resources including gold ores. Mining industry actively develops and involves international investors. Inventory includes 42 deposits (Figure 1) that have reserves of 616.4 t [1] of gold. The Kyrgyz Republic takes the third place in gold mining among CIS countries after Russia and Uzbekistan by producing up to 20 t annually."

"Acid leaching in agitated tanks is central to hydrometallurgical processing for valuable metals’ (e.g., copper, gold, nickel and cobalt) recovery from low grade (e.g., < 2 wt.%) ores. In this study, atmospheric leaching behaviour of Australian saprolitic nickel (Ni) laterite ore using sulfuric acid was investigated under isothermal, batch conditions at pH 1. The effect of primary process variables comprising time (4 h) and temperature (70 and 95 oC) on the leaching mechanisms and kinetics was established for -2 mm, low grade (~1 % Ni) saprolitic ore dispersions at 40 wt.% solid loading. Leaching proceeded incongruently, reflecting the proliferation of gangue minerals’ constituent elements (e.g., Mg, Al, Fe) alongside Ni and Co in the pregnant leach solutions (PLS). Subsequent analysis showed that 89% Ni and 78% Co were extracted after 4 h at 95 oC whilst at 70 oC the recoveries of these metals were markedly low (< 25 %). Overall, 177 and 644 kg H2SO4 /t dry ore were consumed at 70 and 95 oC, respectively. Activation energy of 79.0 ±1.0 kJ/mol was estimated for the mechanism of Ni and Co leaching and associated kinetics. Particles size analyses indicated that when the breakage of frail laterite particles due to shear is taken into consideration, differences in feed and leached product particle size distributions were insignificant , despite a remarkable increase in BET specific surface area of the product. Mineralogical analyses of the feed ore and leached solid products revealed a sub-crystalline silica phase enrichment of the latter. The overall results suggest that the mechanism of acid leaching of saprolitic Ni laterite may be described by a chemical reaction-controlled, shrinking core model."

"Chromite with a low mass ratio of Cr to Fe (Cr/Fe ratio) was treated by the carbochlorination method using solid chlorinating agent (MgCl2 and CaCl2) and carbon in the present paper. The results showed that iron could be selective removed mainly in the form of FeCl2. The removal of iron was indirectly, which consisted of the decomposition of solid chlorinating agent to release Cl2/HCl and the carbochlorination of FeO•Cr2O3 by Cl2/HCl and C. The Cr/Fe ratio increased as increasing temperature from 700 ? to 900 ? in air atmosphere, while the tendency was opposite in N2 atmosphere. The removal efficiency of iron by CaCl2 was better than that by MgCl2. At last, a new pelletizing process was proposed to treat fine chromite with a low Cr/Fe ratio based on carbochlorination method, which could produce the high quality roasted chromite pellets with higher Cr/Fe ratio and compressive strength. INTRODUCTION Chromite is mainly used for the production of ferrochromium. A high Cr/Fe ratio (>2) of chromite is usually required to meet the technical specification of ferrochromium.(Gasik, 2013) Attentions have been attracted to the economic and efficient methods for the recovery of chromium from lower-grade ores as the higher-grade ores become depleted. However, the Cr/Fe ratio is difficult to improve through the conventional beneficiation methods (such as gravity concentration, flotation) due to the spinel composition, although beneficiation methods could increase the metal content of chromite ores by removing gangues.(Nafziger, 1982) The main industrial mineral of chromite is (Fe,Mg)O•(Cr,Al,Fe)2O3, which belongs to spinel magnetite.(Liu, 2013) Iron should be selectively removed through the structural dissociation of spinel to increase Cr/Fe ratio.(Nafziger, 1982)"

This paper deals with the laboratory investigation of cathode ray tube (CRT) glass based glass foam, a relatively new product so called ?Geofil bubbles?. The main process engineering material properties of raw materials, such as particle size distribution, moisture content, density and specific surface area are shown. Then the preparation of raw cathode ray tube glass waste is presented including the following steps: crushing in impact crusher, grinding in laboratory scale ball mill, mixing, pelleting and sintering. We found that it was possible to produce foam glass (with proper mechanical stability and particle density) from the investigated waste CRT glass. The material characteristics of the final product strongly depend on the sintering conditions. Empirical models used for predicting the performance of screens on the basis of capacity, cut size, water split and grade efficiency curves were evaluated. This paper reports experimental results obtained with single-deck Derrick screens. The performance of the screen was tested with limestone in a separate screen set-up, in a pilot plant and in industrial scale test runs. The results of pilot plant experiments showed that the measured water split was higher than the measured bypass. This is an indication to that water flow does not entrain the same proportion of all fine particles present in the feed which is advantageous for screening. The experimental design for the industrial test runs was made on the basis of the pilot plant tests. Suitability of the existing models has been checked and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model. An empirical model for the evaluation of the model parameters as a function of pulp density of the feed and the load of the screen is suggested.

This contribution deals with the mineral processing of Li-silicate greisen-type ores comprising of quartz, topaz and zinnwaldite (lithium-rich mica). The origin of the greisen-type ores processed is the Ore Mountains(Germany) where it is explored as a potential resource for the production of lithium carbonate. The goal is to develop a process chain for the enrichment of zinnwaldite using dry techniques only. As basis for the investigation the process chain, which historically was used to process the greisen focused on cassiterite and wolframite, is taken and modified towards the zinnwaldite. Starting with crushed material with particle sizes smaller than 35 millimeters, investigations on different approaches to grinding to liberate mica from gangue are carried out. Concentrates of zinnwaldite are then produced by magnetic separation of size fractions. To assess the success of grinding, classification and separation, mineral liberation analysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy are used. The amount of lithium measured in the sample with atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to calculate the content of zinnwaldite based on its known mineral chemistry. Combined with the particle size distributions, product qualities are determined. Altogether, this allows the thorough evaluation of the success of comminution with focus on following steps of concentration.
