Column flotation is a promising technique for processing as-mined, cobalt-rich, ferromanganese crust to separate the valuable crust component from barren substrate-rock, either aboard ship or within the water column. Column flotation testing was carried out in a seawater medium using samples obtained from the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the mid-Pacific Ocean near Johnston Atoll. The collector reagent was a mixture of diesel fuel, fatty acid, and sulfonate previously developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for crust flotation using conventional flotation cells. Results are dependent upon particle size and reagent dosage, especially *as these factors affect froth volume and stability. Column flotation results are compared with previous studies in conventional cells. An overview of how column flotation might be applied in an offshore mining and processing system is given.

Hydrothermal activity is well known from many locations on most mid-ocean ridges, however no hydrothermally mineralized area had yet been found at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian Ridge up to October 98 when the Japanese RV Yokosuka with the submersible Shinkai 6500 investigated this area. A massive sulfide field was discovered near 27º51S / 63º56 E in the 11th segment west of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. The Free University of Berlin had joined this cruise and taken over the responsibility for the study of the respective sulfide mineralizations. Hydrothermal minerals were sampled during two dives at water depth of about 2940 m close to the summit of an axial volcanic ridge called Mount Jourdanne. There massive sulfides occur on the seafloor as small smooth mounds with an average area of about 5 m2. Their surfaces are weathered and have a reddish to brownish colour. In addition to these mound-like structures, small tube-like chimneys were observed. These chimneys rise approximately 30 to 40 cm above the floor and are less than 10 cm in diameter. No indications of hydrothermal fauna could be detected. All the hydrothermal features are spatially related to faults and smaller fissures controlled by an E-W trending graben system crossing the summit region of the submarine volcano. Such tectonized areas are generally considered to be ideal for hydrothermal activity because they may have both a magmatic heat source in the deeper underground and pathways for fluid circulation, respectively.

"With the expansion of “green” energy technologies, the demand for the critical raw materials required to sustain this growth is increasing. Many E-tech elements, including tellurium (Te) and rare earth elements (REEs), suffer from high supply shortage risk and the need for more diversified metal supply routes is driving research into alternative resources. Hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts, seafloor deposits of Fe- and Mnoxyhydroxides that form from the direct precipitation from seawater, present a potentially important future source of E-tech elements. With growing interest in the potential wealth of these deposits and the issuing of permits for deep-sea mining and exploration, more work is underway to understand the nature of ferromanganese crust deposits, their elemental concentrations and distributions, and the potential impacts of mining activities.This research focusses on the formation of ferromanganese crust deposits and processes that control the extreme enrichment of elements such as Te, Co and REEs. The crusts were systematically sampled and mapped between ~ 1000 – 4000 m depths using ROV ISIS, from a range of environments, substrates and morphologies from Tropic Seamount (NE Atlantic) in order to determine the seamount-scale factors that control major and trace elemental concentration variations. These factors include depth, surface roughness and micro-bathymetry, location relative to long-term mean current direction and energy, influence of tidal energy dispersion across the seamount, sediment supply, substrate lithology, biological productivity and phosphatisation. The study analyses trace-element characteristics of 100 ferromanganese crust samples alongside standard reference materials NOD-A-1 and NOD-P-1 (US Geological Survey manganese nodules). At this initial stage, we report results from whole rock acid digestion and ICP-MS analyses."

Both ferromanganese crusts and nodules present potential processors with enormous volumes of tailings of dubious environmental character: most processing scenarios fail to utilize the uneconomic manganese itself, leaving a total waste volume on the order of 96% of the incoming ore. Each current disposal proposal seems flawed: (1) backhauling to the initial mine site is costly and might run afoul of EPA or UN marine dumping*regulations, (2) subsea disposal near a coastal processing site means almost inevitable community opposition, (3) agricultural soil amendment for improving barren lava or coral rubble appears to require prohibitive amounts of supplementary phosphate, and (4) the slag resulting from an energy intensive pyrometallurgical processing may have potential as road ballast, but few processors will opt for smelting in all but those locales where energy is very cheap. This unfortunately rules out a smelting operation in almost any Pacific Island environment. We envision at least one other scenario which could result in both the removal of tailings from a processing plant and an increase in the supply of useful building materials at little or no cost to either the processing or construction industries--transforming a tenacious waste into a novel resource. Ongoing experiments have demonstrated considerable potential for turning acid leach tailings into dark composite facing stone, fancy black tile, novelty ceramics or concrete aggregate. The tailings are commonly very fine grained and may also serve as an additive in drilling mud. Applications as an additive to asphalt also need to be explored. Concern over the availability of domestic critical and strategic mineral supplies has led the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the reserve development potential of alternative sources in Alaska. Near the village of Platinum, on the southwest Alaska coast, the Red Mountain concentrically zoned ultramafic complex is a source of onshore alluvial placers containing platinum-group-metals (PGM). It has long been suggested that valuable placers may also underlie the shallow coastal waters of the Bering Sea. A direct correlation of placer PGM and chromium to ultramafic rocks in the area was studied by the Bureau and the extent of the complex was mapped. Magnetometer and gravity data and geological studies suggest the complex is a large lensoidal body trending several kilometers offshore to the southwest with a probable steep southeasterly dip. Multiple Pleistocene glaciations and marine transgressions have eroded the western and southwestern portion of the complex. Sediments containing PGM, chromium, and associated gold (largely derived from glacial till) have been transported northward along the advancing coastline by littoral currents. Beyond the breaker zone, these sediments are generally buried by recently winnowed sand and gravel transported by strong longshore tidal currents. There is also evidence that paleoplacer channels underlie the marine sediments.

The U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS), U.K., conducted a sidescan sonar survey of the U. S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the Gulf of Mexico from August 7 to October 22, 1985. A reconnaissance-scale view of 120,000 square nautical miles of sea floor seaward of the shelf-edge was obtained by using the GLORIA (Geologic Long-Range Inclined Asdic) sidescan sonar system. After these data were merged with GLORIA data from an earlier survey (1982) of the northwestern Gulf, a preliminary mosaic was constructed at a scale of 1:375,000. From this mosaic, we can identify morphologic features and interpret sea-floor processes. The extensive deformation of the continental slope seaward of Texas and Louisiana by salt tectonics has resulted in a complex pattern of basins and salt dome highs. One continuous meandering channel was identified in this portion of the Gulf, extending from the shelf edge to the Sigsbee Abyssal Plain. Bottom currents have reworked the sediments in this channel's levees seaward of the Sigsbee Escarpment, the seaward edge of the salt front, suggesting that this channel may no longer be actively transporting sediment. Talus appears to lie along the base of the Sigsbee Escarpment, suggesting that erosion and deposition is occur- ring along this front. Three other discontinuous channel systems can be identified on the mosaic and appear to have contributed sediments to the deep Gulf.

Since 1985, numerous constructional sulfide-sulfate deposits in the form of mounds, pinnacles, chimneys, and sheets have been located between 40°45' and 41°05'N latitude in Escanaba Trough, the sediment-covered axial valley of the Southern Gorda Ridge. Single-channel seismic data indicate that three volcanic edifices up to 6 km in width penetrate as much as 500 m of turbidites that fill the valley; pillow and sheet flow lavas are exposed on the sea floor where these volcanoes breach the sediment surface. Observations from deeply towed camera systems and submersibles show that the largest hydrothermal deposits occur along the step-faulted northern flank of the central volcanic edifice and on the peripheries of steep-sided, sediment-capped hills, approximately 1 km wide and 100 m high, that rise above the valley floor. The sulfide deposits are highly oxidized, eroded, and partly buried by unconsolidated sediment; aprons of sulfide talus extend downslope from the mounds. Two types of sulfide have been sampled by dredging and submersible. The predominant mound and chimney material is pyrrhotite-rich massive sulfide with low amounts of Zn, Pb, Cd, and Ag. Coarse-grained zones with high porosity mark the location of myriad fluid channelways. Thin crusts of barite associated with pyrrhotite-rich sulfide have Au contents up to 2 ppm. In a commercial effort to characterize deep seabed manganese deposits in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific, Ocean Mineral s Company carried out 16 expeditions to the region between -1978 and 1981. During these cruises OMCO collected substantial data. Activities included acoustic profiling, video and photographic imaging of the seabed, and sampling of the deposits with dredges, box cores and free-fall grab samplers. In 1990 the samples, photographs, technical reports and computer data bases which resulted from this work were archived at the Marine Minerals Technology Center at the University of Hawaii. This preliminary examination of the collection focuses on the biological observations made from almost 10,000 photographs of the seabed and the manganese nodule size distributions and compositional data from the free-fall grab recoveries. Regional trends are evident in all three data types. The biological examinations of the seabed photographs show significant geographical trends, with greater abundances of organisms being noted in the northeastern extreme of the region, decreasing toward the southwest (11.4 to 2.7 observations per 100 m2; 460 to 190 g per 100 m2). The nodule size distributions suggest that the ratio of the nodule burial rates to growth rates systematically decreases over the same range (0.65 to 0.36 nodules buried per 1 cm of growth). Much advance has been made in offshore hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation in India. But the same amount of success could not be achieved in the case of other offshore minerals which are amenable for mining. However, employing present technology, there should not be any difficulty in successful exploitation with minimum environmental hazards. A demonstration is provided by considering the conditions prevailing in the Kerala offshore (southwest coast of India) scenario of monazite, ilmenite, phosphatic mud and calcareous deposits. Mud banks are unique phenomenon of the Kerala coast during monsoon season. Acting as barriers to waves, mud banks protect portions of the beaches from being eroded and trap sediments from either side facilitating growth of adjacent beach. The easy minable possibilities of the phosphatic mud during non-monsoon season with less pollution hazards and dumping back the waste material after processing for phosphate at the breaker zones to reduce the erosional effects on the coast make the exploitation economic and ecofriendly unlike the benefication of the lowgrade phosphate ores on land on a comparatively larger area and subsequent crushing, transport and resulting pollution.

Southern Explorer Ridge (SER) is an anomalously shallow, intermediate-rate spreading ridge located 200 kilometers off the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. It ranges in depth between 2600 m (deepest basins) and 1760 m (bathymetric minimum). At least 60 sulfide deposits are known to be associated with hydrothermal vent fields along the ridge. For the first time geological data, including deposit locations, collected from 15 marine expeditions to SER since 1983 have been assembled in a GIS format. GIS processing techniques were employed to plot the distribution of base metal concentrations for recovered sulfide samples. The highest base metal concentrations are found in the vicinity of the Magic Mountain site (main active vent field), and also proximal to a side scan sonar anomaly referred to as AGOR 171. Individual samples near these locations have yielded values as high as 29.3 wt\% Cu, 34.3 wt\% zinc, 0.97 wt\% Pb, 2.0 ppm gold, and 664 ppm silver. Sample paucity is the key limiting factor that prevents adequate assessment of the areas economic potential.

Marine benthic habitats are vulnerable to the influence of a wide range of anthropogenic activities (e.g. sand and gravel extraction, dredged material disposal and trawling). Traditionally, benthic ecologists have relied on point sampling techniques such as grabs, corers and dredges to provide information on the physical nature of the substrates and their associated benthic fauna. However, information of this nature only relates to the specific point on the seabed from which the sample was collected and the interpolation of such data to predict the wider distribution of substrata and associated fauna may be unreliable. Our approach uses a range of acoustic, photographic and physical sampling methodologies to produce continuous acoustic coverage maps which can be used to assist with the interpretation of faunal distributions. This approach has been used to assess the impacts of marine sand and gravel extraction at the seabed at two sites off the east coast of England in the southern North Sea. The first study site (designated ?Area 222?) is located 20km off the southeast coast of England and was surveyed in 2001 using sidescan sonar, single beam bathymetry, seabed photography and also a 0.1m2 Hamon grab for the collection of benthos and sediment samples. The main objectives of this investigation were to provide an indication of the spatial distribution of the sediments and macrofauna in the wider area encompassing the dredged site, to evaluate the scope for the effects of marine sand and gravel extraction to extend beyond the boundaries of the site and to provide a wider geographical context for time series investigations. At this site, an acoustic basemap was utilised in conjunction with faunal sampling and photographic groundtruthing, to determine the nature and distribution of the seabed sediments and their associated features. Disturbances at the seabed arising from historic sand and gravel extraction activities were mapped, and this information was helpful in establishing biological cause and effect relationships. The acoustic basemap was also used to target biological reference sites against which the effects of adjacent man-made disturbances could be evaluated.

A very small nation with large seabed resources requires a strategy. The simplest approach is to duplicate every step taken by the United Nations (UN), in its own leasing programme. In addition, the smaller nations must sell itself and its competitive offering. It is one thing just to await applicants and/ or tenders, another to work to make the leasing seem like a very good idea. This cap be achieved through publications, correspondence, meetings (such as the Underwater Mining Institute, but especially through pro-active planning, seeking the ideal technologies in both harvesting and processing. The ideal would be some combination that could begin quickly and on a small scale. It must be within the UN environmental guidelines. To meet the "quick and small criteria," simple harvesting and physical processing methods must be given the highest priority. Once these are satisfied, then marketing studies can be completed. There is, of course, a market for every element but only careful engineering and cost analysis will determine accessibility. What is required is a stepwise approach, gaining greater and greater credibility at each step. In fact, much planning can be done for very low cost. In the Cook Islands, the first crucial step was the East-West Center publication which pulled together all facts in one volume and which found the local resource to be richer in significant ways than Clarion-Clipperton. Most seem to believe that it could be many years before full production is possible, but this has been conventional wisdom for so long that it has taken on the suspicious aura of myth. Is it real? Have all possible recent technologies such as robotics and physical processing been taken into account? Either way, it is essential that a comprehensive approach be taken so that all factors from resource to market are considered as inter-related until a single business plan emerges. When that is in hand and when its profitability and risk levels are found to be credible, adequate investment funds are available.

Canada has a long history of marine-related industry and onshore mining. Even so, commercial interest in marine mining, excluding seawater mineral extraction and offshore extensions of hardrock deposits such as iron and coal, has been sporadic; despite the fact that shelf mineral deposits supply a significant proportion of the national market requirements for many countries. Several factors have accounted for this including: a relative abundance of onland mineral desposits; the fact that onland deposits can be mined using conventional technology; and, a general lack of knowledge and public awareness as to Canadian offshore non-fuel mineral resource potential. In the mid-1970s the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources formed the Departmental Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining. The Committee addressed the question of shelf non-fuel mineral resource potential and concluded that, while several reports had raised the possibilty of this alternative source, there had not been a systematic evaluation of the resource base. This led to the formation of a Shelf Working Group, whose task it was to outline and implement a departmental program to advance our knowledge of shelf resource potential. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), over the past three decades, has carried out a spectrum of geologic surveys and research in marine areas of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around the U.S. and its territories as well as in the Great Lakes region. Regional and topical studies have been undertaken throughout the range of marine environments: estuarine, tidal wetlands, coastal and nearshore, shelf, slope, and the deep ocean basins. The Survey's coastal and marine research programs consist of four elements shown in Table 1. The first includes studies using interpretations of bathymetry, seismic-reflection and sidescan sonar data, and analyses of sediment grab samples and cores to develop an understanding of the geologic framework. Information on the geologic setting, including the subbottom structure and stratigraphic relationships, and the geologic history and evolution of the areas surveyed are important parts of the program objectives.

The TAG and Broken Spur hydrothermal mounds are located on the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) at 260N and 290N (respectively). Both were initially discovered by exploratory work from surface vessels and both have since been investigated by submersibles. The discovery of TAG resulted from a NOAA Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (Rona et al. 1975) which fortuitously sampled low temperature materials on the east wall of the MAR rift valley and follow up operations (Rona et al. 1986) located the high temperature (365°C) mound some 5km to the west. In 1994, ODP deep sea drilling (Leg 158) at over 3,500 metres of water recovered core to a depth of 150 m below surface (Herzig et al. 1998) and for the first time allowed a geological interpretation of an active mound. The Broken Spur mound was accidentally discovered in 1993 when sulphide fragments were observed on a deep-sea towed camera system (Murton 1993). Later that year, exploratory submersible dives by Alvin located the hydrothermal field and the area was again explored by submersible in 1994 and 1997. Despite the amount of work carried out, our geological understanding of the MAR mounds is limited. Much effort has gone into measuring fluid chemistry whilst practical difficulties have inhibited good geological mapping of the sulphide areas. It is clear from both TAG and Broken Spur that the mounds are not necessarily located in the areas of highest heat potential. Indeed, TAG is some 2 km from the rift valley axis and has been operational for several tens of thousands of years. Hence, heat availability is not a major consideration and the most obvious control is a structural one. Mapping on Broken Spur indicates a series of isolated vent-sulphide areas, concentrated around a minor graben. Their distribution, size and nature all indicate that they are residual parts of a much larger sulphide body which was at least the size of the present TAG field. The evidence is for a cyclical pattern of mound growth -mass wasting? rejuvenation and the Broken Spur mound appears to be in the rejuvenation stage of the cycle. Mound cyclicity must be related to the supply of hot water which itself is a function of the connectivity of fracture systems. Hence, we return to the theme that the major controls in mound development are structural ones.

Submarine hydrothermal mineralization occurs in at least three locations along the Hellenic Volcanic Arc in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Weak hydrothermal discharges occur off Kos and Nisseros at the eastern end of the arc and off Milos at the western end. In both cases the hydrothermal solutions are rich in iron and manganese and are precipitating iron oxides variably enriched in minor elements. This points to the likely presence of sulphide minerals at shallow depth below the sea floor at these locations. By contrast, at Santorini, in the centre of the arc, the hydrothermal discharges are much stronger and rate of deposition of the hydrothermal minerals much greater. Indeed, in one of the two hydrothermally active embayments off Santorini (Nea Kameni) hydrothermal deposits are accumulating up to five times as fast as in the Atlantis II Deep of the Red Sea. Radiocarbon dating indicates that these deposits have been accumulating for about 100 years. In the other embayment off Santorini (Palaea Kameni), hydrothermal deposition has taken place over a longer period (more than 1,000 years) but the deposits are not so hydrothermally enriched due to the simultaneous deposition of biogenic silica and detrital mineral with the hydrothermal deposits. The observed pattern of increasing intensity of submarine hydrother¬mal activity from the extremities of the arc towards its centre argues for additional hydrothermal mineralization on poorly explored areas of the sea floor between Milos and Santorini and between Kos and Santorini.

The elucidation of the theory of plate tectonics has provided a conceptual framework for understanding the formation and distribution of different types of ore deposits. For example, we now recognize that certain kinds of mineral deposits are generally associated with a particular type of plate boundary (i.e., massive sulfides often occur along divergent plate boundaries, whereas porphyry copper deposits are typically found along convergent boundaries). During certain geologic time periods, plate reorganization events have changed the relative proportion of different types of plate boundaries. Corresponding changes have been observed in the abundance and distribution of ores deposited during these times. The present study examines the temporal aspects of this relationship; i.e., do plate reorganization events play an active or passive role in ore formation? In other words, do plate reorganizations simply provide a more favorable tectonic setting in which ore formation can occur over significant time periods, or are they directly linked to the mineralization process? We have examined this question by comparing regional tectonic histories with the ages of known massive sulfide and porphyry copper deposits. Because these deposits, in particular massive sulfides, form as a result of hydrothermal activity, we have also compared regional tectonic histories with proxy indicators of this process in the marine sedimentary record. These indicators include increased mass accumulation rates of Ca, Fe, Mn, and opal, characteristic changes in the Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios of biogenous carbonates, and shoaling of the carbonate compenstion

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is a mature intraoceanic back arc basin with an age of ~12 Ma. Recent volcanism and spreading activity are focused along the Central Spreading Ridge (CSR), A ridge segment more than 800 km long, composed of four main segments, the N160°, N15°, north-south (N-S), and southernmost segments from north to south. The dominant volcanic rock in the entire central spreading ridge is normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), very similar to those emplaced along mid-oceanic ridges. Conversely, influence of an oceanic island basalt (OIB) source increases northward from 18°20'S. Several basalts which show a significant subduction-related component are also observed in the southern part of the NFB. Hydrothermal activity along the spreading centers of the North Fiji Basin was investigated by several previous works, especially by the STARMER project in 1989 and 1991. Both extinct and active hydrothermal vents are found on the N15° and N-S segments. In contrast, only traces of hydrothermal activity have been found on the N160° segment. Although high temperature activity and related massive sulfide deposit on the N15° segment was further investigated by several follow-up studies, no systematic survey for other hydrothermal sites was conducted after their discovery. In 2012 and 2013, KIOST performed two hydrothermal expeditions aboard the R/V Onnuri in the three targeted areas of hydrothermal activity along the CSR of North Fiji Basin. Methane and hydrogen sulfide vent from a cold seep above a shallowly buried methane hydrate in a mud volcano located 24 km offshore of Los Angeles, California in 800 m water. Bivalves, authigenic calcite, and methane hydrate were recovered in a 2.1 m piston core. Aragonite shells of two bivalve species are unusually depleted in 13C (to -19? d13C), the most 13C-depleted shells of marine macrofauna yet discovered. Carbon isotopes for both living and dead specimens indicate that they used in part carbon derived from anaerobically oxidized methane (AOM) to construct their shells. Although the?d13C values are highly variable among specimens, most fall within the range -12 to -19?. This variability may be diagnostic for identifying cold-seep/hydrate systems in the geologic record. Authigenic calcite is abundant in the cores down to about 1.5 m subbottom, the methane hydrate horizon. The calcite is strongly depleted in 13C d13C = -46 to -58?) indicating that AOM was the main carbon source. Three sources of methane are likely: a geologic hydrocarbon reservoir, and biogenic and thermogenic degradation of organic matter in basin sediments. Oxygen isotopes indicate that most calcite formed out of isotopic equilibrium with ambient bottom-water, under the influence of gas hydrate dissociation and strong methane flux. High concentrations of Ag, Hg, Cd, Tl, and other elements in mud volcano sediment reflect leaching of basement rocks by fluids circulating along an underlying fault. Fossil (geologic) methane was likely transported with these fluids.
