The importance of cobalt-rich manganese crusts on the Pacific seamounts for possible future rare metal sources has currently been recognized. The thin layer-type deposit characteristics affect not only the excavation efficiency but also the economy of mining venture. Considering the thin layer-type distribution and the utilization of some rare metals in cobalt-rich manganese crusts, a preliminary economic feasibility of the mining venture is evaluated. Under some preliminary technical assumptions, the possibility of cobalt-rich manganese crusts for future rare metal sources for Japan is examined. The important role of utilization of rare metals in the crusts is highlighted.

Ferromanganese crusts on the seamounts in the Pacific Ocean are potential resources of cobalt, nickel, platinum and REEs. Particularly, those of the Republic of Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) waters are believed to be of the highest resources potential area in the Pacific Ocean. The total six cruises using the Japanese Research Vessel Hakurei Maru No. 2 were carried out in the seamounts of the Marshall Islands in 1996, 1998 and 2002, and of the FSM in the 1997, 1998 and 2005 for evaluation of economic potential for cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts as part of the Japan-SOPAC joint project. During these cruises numerous data such as bathymetric, geological, geophysical and environmental data were obtained. Geophysical exploration with backscatter mapping and side scan sonar, visual imaging using towed TV camera and geological sampling using dredge bucket and/or benthic multi-coring system (BMS) were conducted on these seamounts. In this presentation, we will report the mode of distribution of the crusts and calculated resource estimation based on the results of these geological and geophysical shipboard survey and land-based analyses. Recent offshore diamond exploration has been concentrated in the SW Joseph Bonaparte Gulf. I`IW Australia. Extensive high resolution seismic and sampling surveys have been carried out in Cambridge Gulf, offshore of the mouth of the OR River and other rivers of the region. Surface-tow boomer surveys have been correlated with sampling data from vibracores and a wide diameter (1m) airlift system, providing a geological framework for the area. Although large-scale bulk sampling has not been undertaken, there has been no reported recovery of diamonds since 1993. The geology and prospectivity of a range of potential diamond traps in high energy, fluvial and transgressive depositional settings has been assessed. Potentially diamondiferous targets include (i) a shoreline apron. (ii) fluvial/estuarine channel infills and terraces and (iii) ravinement surfaces.. Although there is evidence for a long history of fluvial development and sea level changes, the majority of the investigated traps represent the result of erosion and sedimentation during and following the last interglacial. Significant volumes of unconsolidated gravels and coarse-grained sands with occasional indurated layers are present, and are locally exposed at sea beet In place s thick successions (>5m) of fine-grained overburden overlie the coarse-grained sediments.

Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

It is well known that diamonds are found in Kimberlite pipes within the earth’s crust and are also discovered where erosion has released them to be concentrated by rivers in trap sites within alluvial gravels. Few people are aware however, that diamonds are now being found in significant quantities at sea. And that the rugged marine environment has ensured that the quality of diamonds in the sea is predominantly gem quality. Shortly after intrusion of Kimberlites into the host rocks of the karoo in the Cretaceous period massive erosion occurred when torrential rivers carried diamonds from their Kimberlitic source rocks down the rivers and into the sea. In the sea they have been subject to a transporting and concentrating dynamic, which has deposited them in trap sites along the West Coast of Africa for hundreds of kilometers. In the last 60 million years the sea level along the West Coast has varied in steps from the current sea level to – 300m. With time at each beach level the sea has reconcentrated the diamonds previously carried down. These old beach levels exist at roughly 10 meter intervals. Each previous sea level now provides a target for marine miners. Marine diamond mining was started 46 years ago by the first pioneer, a Texan, Sammy Collins. Collins brought the potential of marine diamonds to the attention of major mining companies. With now outmoded technology Collins had days when he recovered pockets of high grade gems worth several million dollars; an excitement hard to equal in any walk of life. Amongst marine miners there is still a strong pioneering spirit but the industry has matured and now aims to consistently produce over two million carats of gems a year. The potential resource is huge stretching up to 30 kilometers offshore along the West Coast of Africa from South Africa to Angola.

The recovery of most minerals, which are amenable to gravity concentration, is standardly determined by accurate sampling and assaying. .With respect to particulate - gold ores, sampling and assaying are still the convention, but the accuracy and reproducibility of these operations are much discussed and debated points. Evaluation of gravity concentrators by conventional sampling and assaying techniques is very time consuming, costly and may introduce a large amount of uncertainty into the results due to the particulate nature of placer gold. These problems are not unique to placer gold ores and apply to any low grade ore with particulate values. A gravity concentrator evaluation process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (198Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator's product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems. Beginning in 1984, MIRL conducted radiotracer studies of unit processes, which included jigging, static wedge wire screening, elutriation, and concentration with compound water cyclones.

While direct study of high temperature hydrothermal activity and the associated mineral formation as well as study of their scales are possible in the modern ocean, researchers are deprived of such opportunity for past geologic time. Even in cases where hydrothermal deposits that formed in the geological past are preserved they have been covered by sediments or overlain by lava and have become inaccessible after a time for obser-vation and sampling. Rarely are these buried hydrothermal deposits found during deep-sea drilling or coring operations, and their direct study on an ocean scale is impossible at present. Even within hydrothermal fields, without special preliminary detailed surveys, the probability of intersecting hydrothermal edifices that are covered by sediments becomes a rare event.

During the last ten years seven applications for nodule-bearing areas of the World Ocean Floor International Region (IR) have been made by national companies of Russia (Yuzhmorgeologiya), France (IFREMER/AFERNOD), Japan (DORD), India (The State Department of Sea Resources Development), China (COMRA), Korea (KORDI) and the Interokeanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) of some East European countries and have been registered by the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations International Seabed Authority (ISA). Besides these groups registered within Resolution 11 of the Final Act of the III United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea there are four international consortia registered in the USA [Kennecott (KCON), Ocean Mining Associates (DMA), Ocean Management Incorporated (OMI), and Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO)], which have interest in areas in the IR and can be considered as potential applicants. All registered areas (with the exception of the Indian Ocean) including the areas of potential applicants and also 6 areas, reserved for the ISA are located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. If within each area not less than one deposit of polymetallic nodule-bearing ores can be discovered, then, the total number of such deposits, for the present moment, is 20.

"Co-rich ferromanganese crust deposits exist on slopes, summits and platforms of seamounts and guyots throughout the global oceans, where deep-sea currents have kept the seafloor structures more or less free of sediment for millions of years. They form by direct precipitation from cold seawater under more or less oxic conditions and consist of thin layers (2 up to 25 cm thick) covering hard substrate rocks in water depths of 800 to 5000m (Halbach and Marbler, 2009; Hein et al., 2000). Besides Mn these crusts contain interesting concentrations of minor elements (Co, Ni, Ti and Cu) and trace elements (Mo, W, Te, Ga, Pt and REEs), thus they represent significant metal deposits and promise potentially valuable additions to the world’s metal resources.The prospects for mining of this marine type of metal deposits largely depend on the grades and the scale of the potential ore resources. However, only a few percent of existing seamounts and guyots have been mapped and sampled in detail, most of them in the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, a model to estimate the geological resources based on the global seamount catalogue of Wessel (2001; revised: Wessel et al., 2009) and the empirical parameters which control the metal composition and distribution was developed."

The UNEP Shelf Programme (USP) is the access point for a collaboration of international organizations with expertise in marine geoscience and maritime law. It was established in response to a United Nations resolution, stating that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), working through the Global Resource Information Database (GRID) system, should work in conjunction with Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) and the International Hydrographic Organization, to assist coastal States, and in particular developing States and small island developing States (SIDS) with submissions to establish the outer limits of their continental shelf under Article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center has recently completed field tests of the percussion- waterlift drill and the vibracore/vibralift convertible drill. The two systems have been modified from existing drills to increase their effectiveness and flexibility for nearshore minerals exploration. Originally the percussion-waterlift drill was designed for iand based operations, but it has been modified for use in protected shallow water areas. This drill is easily maintained, inexpensive to construct and operate, and is able to accurately recover representative samples from a variety of sedimentary deposits. Sampling is accomplished using either a reverse circulation method for the recovery of a slurry of sediment cuttings and water or employing a thin walled "Shelby tube" to core zones of interest. The vibracore/vibralift convertible drill is a modification of the remote placer drill (RPD). By combining these drills into one convertible system, it is possible to recover continuous cores of unconsolidated fine-grained sediments (vibracore), a slurry of clay to gravel size sediments over 1.0 meter intervals (vibralift), and to sample sedimentary material in environments where indurated

Williamson and Associates, Inc of Seattle, Washington has recently built a remotely operated seafloor coring system for Nichiyu Giken Kogyo Ltd and the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ). The system is designed to core to depths of 20 meters in 6,000 meters of water and will be operated from MMAJ's research vessel Hakurei-Maru No. 2 The corer uses rotary rod coring methods and will recover a core diameter of 44 mm. To facilitate coring through soft or unstable formations, the corer has the ability to set casing. The corer is fitted with thrusters for positioning during landing and telescoping legs for leveling. The system is operated through a 12 km electro-optical cable. Data displayed to the operator provides the operator with real-time feed back and control over the coring process. The operator has independent proportional control over bit weight, advance rate, rotary speed, and flushing water flow. The process of making up, breaking down and storing the drill string is automated and is controlled by a logic driven software routine. The system is currently undergoing trials in Japan. This presentation will discuss the drill's capabilities and should be of interest to those in need of a tool for assessing the thickness of marine mineral deposits.

Scientists show that polymetallic nodules and massive sulfides from deep sea mining contain valuable metals. These metals have the potential to overcome future shortages of supply. Hence, companies, government agencies and industrial associations increasingly evaluate deep sea mining as a promising supplement of land mining. Technologies to extract, exploit, transport and smelt polymetallic nodules and massive sulfides industrially are still in conceptual stage and not sufficiently advanced for operation. According to the International Seabed Authority, large scale exploitation would require a successful pilot mining test in order to demonstrate e.g. the technological feasibility but also the conservation of environmental systems services. At the same time, NGO´s and a some scientists point out that large scale extraction of polymetallic nodules and massive sulfides could disturb the habitat of benthic organisms, with unknown long-term effects. Aside from the direct impacts of mining, indirect consequences about leakage are likely. In the oral presentation I will show how companies, government agencies, scientists and association/interest groups perceive and assess economical/technological, social and environmental risks and opportunities of deep sea mining. In order to analyze the perspectives of each stakeholder group on deep sea mining, we conducted 15 interviews with four stakeholder groups and a large scale survey (n = 500, return rate = 13 %) in Germany. We used the concept of sustainability with its economical/technological, ecological and social dimensions for the interpretation of the results. "Advancing our knowledge about trace metal distribution and abundance provides insight into formation, alteration, and trace element enrichment processes of ferromanganese nodules and crusts. A fundamental understanding of these mechanisms, in turn, has implications for the selective recovery of critical metals and the development of sustainable hydrometallurgical techniques. Synchrotron-based X-ray Fluorescence (SXRF) is a powerful, state-of-the-art analytical tool that can examine geochemical features of Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, such as abundance and distribution of trace elements, in an integrated and efficient manner. By correlating trace element composition and Mn oxidation states in these highly complex samples, it can be determined whether these parameters are related to the Mn oxide mineralogy (vacancy content of crystal lattice) and chemistry.In this study, eleven Fe-Mn nodule and crust samples from three circum-Australian locations – the South Tasman Rise, Lord Howe Rise, and Coral Sea – were analyzed at the Australian Synchrotron, Victoria, Australia. Micrometer-scale spatial resolution of geochemical features, such as concentric growth structures and element distribution, was achieved with high sensitivity (Fig. 1). For instance, Ni could be detected at 10's of ppm to 1 wt% levels. Information on other redox-sensitive trace elements, which are present at 10-1000 ppm levels (e.g., Cu, Co, Ti), were gained by means of fully quantitative elemental composition maps."

The rapid advancement of green technologies in recent years is closely tied to an ever- increasing demand for raw materials. Innovative forms of zero-emission transportation and sustainable power generation will require a variety of traditional metals such as Ni and Co, but also many non-traditional metals (e.g., REY). Many of these elements are known to be highly enriched in deep-sea ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) nodules and crusts. However, unlocking these metals from their deposits through metal processing is – aside from deposit exploration and production – expected to be a critical component that will affect the overall economics of the marine mining value chain. Hence, research and development of tailored metal processing solutions which can target specific metals of interest in Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, is required. Dynamic mineral recrystallization (DMR) of Fe-Mn oxide phases is a geochemical process that may have notable potential for hydrometallurgical applications. We have recently demonstrated that Ni can effectively be cycled between deep-sea Fe-Mn nodules and crusts and solutions through dynamic mineral recrystallization. DMR occurs in nature as abiotic background process during biogeochemical Mn cycling when dissolved Mn(II) is in direct contact with Mn oxides. Trace metals which are incorporated in the Mn host phases, are cycled between solid phase and solution via coupled dissolution (trace metal release) – reprecipitation (trace metal incorporation) mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION Seafloor Massive Sulphides are typically found near the oceanic ridges at larger water depths (>1km). The physical properties of SMS, as shown in table 1, are comparable to the properties of weak rock. One of the technical challenges to enable extraction from these locations is the cutting or excavation process. Experiments have shown that the energy needed to excavate the material may increase with water depth (Alvarez Grima et al. 2015). Besides that, it is demonstrated that rock that fails brittle in atmospheric conditions can fail more or less in a plastic fashion when present in a high pressure environment, as would be the case at large water depths. The goal of this research is to identify the physics of the cutting process and to develop this into a model in which the effect of hydrostatic and pore pressures is included. The cutting of rock is initiated by pressing a tool into the rock. As a result, at the tip of the tool a high compressive pressure occurs, which leads to the formation of a crushed zone. Depending on the shape of the tool and the cutting depth, shear failures might emanate from the crushed zone, which will eventually expand as tensile fractures that can reach to the free rock surface. Through this process intact rock will be disintegrated to a granular medium. For an overview of the process (figure 1). Additionally, the presence of water in the pores of and surrounding the rock influences the cutting process through drainage effects. The most relevant effects are weakening when compaction and strengthening when dilation occurs in shearing and tension. Deformation of the rock causes the pore volume to change, resulting in a under or over pressure. As a result, the pore fluid needs to flow. The magnitude of the potential under pressure is limited through cavitation of the pore fluid, limiting further reduction of the pore pressure (figure 2). The drainage effects cause the rock cutting process in a submerged environment to show a stronger dependency of both the hydrostatic pressure as well as the deformation rate (figure 3).

The Federal government has a lengthy history in supporting and conducting research in the ocean mining and minerals field. The Federal effort has been and is currently focused primarily in four agencies: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) within the Department of Commerce, and the Geological Survey (USGS), the Bureau of Mines (BuMines), and more recently the Minerals Management Service (MMS) within the Department of the Interior. While NOAA and the USGS have played dominant roles in mapping and geologic studies, and the MMS has recently provided funding for several task force studies within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) , the Bureau of Mines has conducted research in mining technology, minerals processing, resource definition, and economic evaluation of minerals from the seabed for over 20 years. These studies have yielded considerable minerals information regarding manganese nodules and crusts, placers, mineral sands, phosphorites, and sulfides. This paper reviews the past achievements in ocean mining and minerals programs starting in the late 1960's, describes current research and information efforts, and presents an outlook for Bureau of Mines research and information gathering efforts. Until now, more than 200 sites of sea-floor hydrothermal activities are known on the midocean ridge but few of them are documented on South Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR). This on some extent restricts our directly understanding of the hydrothermal mechanism on SMAR. In 2011, During the Cruise 22 of R/V Dayangyihao, a masive sulfide field was discovered in the center part of the first-order ridge segment that bounded between Cardno Fracture Zone and Saint Helena Fracture Zone, near 15.16°S/13.35°W, which give us an opportunity to recognize the mechanism of hydrothermal systems on SMAR directly. This newly discovered hydrothermal field, which informally called SMAR 15°S, is situated in a SE-NW offset depression of an axial neovolcanic ridge, with water depth of about 2793m. In the water column around this field, strong turbidity and temperature anomalies were detected. Ten meters high venting chimneys, hydrothermal mounds as well as a large amount of hydrothermal vent shrimps were also observed and recorded by ROV and Deep tow camera on the ocean floor. The samples we collected from this field include sulfide chimney fragments, massive sulfides and basaltic rocks. In this study, we are focusing on the mineralogy and sulfur isotope geochemistry of sulfide samples for preliminarily uncovering the geological characteristics and hydrothermal processes of this hydrothermal field.

For a period of twenty years - from 1985 to 2005 - the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) have jointly conducted surveys of deep-sea mineral resources in the EEZs of SOPAC’s twelve member countries. The overall Programme has obtained excellent results and has identified numerous sites with potential marine mineral resources of manganese nodules, cobalt-rich manganese crusts, and polymetalic massive sulphides. The survey cruises have identified numerous sites with potential marine mineral resources such as: manganese nodules in the Cook Islands; cobaltrich manganese crusts in the Marshall Islands, FSM, and Kiribati; and polymetalic massive sulphides in Fiji. Based on collected samples and acoustic data, inferred resources for manganese nodule, cobalt-rich manganese crusts, and polymetalic massive sulphides, have all been estimated to be about- 200 million tons in the central Cook waters- 200 million tons in the three seamount selected Marshall waters- and 500 thousands tons around the triple junction of the North Fiji Basin.
