Flotation works very well for particles that are typically in the range 20 to 150 µmin diameter, for base metal ores. In this range, it is possible to get quite high recoveries in conventional flotation machines. Outside this range, the recoveries decline progressively, whether it be with the very fine or the coarse end of the size spectrum. In this paper, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery are briefly reviewed, together with strategies for future work. Recent progress in the author's laboratory will be described. These include the Concorde Cell, which takes advantage of the high dissipation rates in the shock wave created when a gas-liquid mixture reaches supersonic velocities. The environment thus created is very beneficial for the flotation of ultrafines. For coarse particles, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery can be related to the highly turbulent nature of the pulp in a conventional flotation cell. To improve recovery, it is necessary to find a way of bringing particles and bubbles into contact in a quiescent environment. A new process for coarse particle flotation will be described, in which a fluidized bed is created in the flotation cell. The flow conditions are very gentle, and the high solids concentration leads to rapid rates of capture of the particles. Experimental results are presented. "Coals are ranked according to their degree of metamorphism or progressive change in the natural series from lignite to anthracite. The reader is referred to ASTM Standard D-388, ""Standard Classification of Coals by Rank"" for a detailed description of the system in use throughout North America including Canada.Fixed carbon and calorific value (expressed in Btu/ lb) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis have been chosen as the main characteristics from which rank is established. Higher rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon content, lower rank coals according to the calorific value on a ""moist"" mineral-matter-free basis. Certain adjacent groups are differentiated according to their agglomerating (caking) properties. ""Moist"" refers to inherent moisture. Referring to Table 1, coals having calorific values greater than 14,000 Btu/lb on a moist mineral-matter-free basis and fixed carbon of 69% or more on a dry mineral-matter-free basis are classified according to fixed carbon. Coals having calorific values of less than 14,000 Btu/lb on a moist mineralmatter-free basis are classified according to calorific value on a moist mineral-matter-free basis. Agglomerating coals having 69 to 86% fixed carbon on the dry mineral-matter-free basis are classified in the low or medium volatile group of the bituminous class according to their volatile matter content. Agglomerating coals having calorific values between 10,500 and 11,500 Btu/lb are classified in the high volatile C bituminous coal group; nonagglomerating coals in the same calorific value range are classified in the sub-bituminous A coal group."

In today?s emerging economy, pooling resources is a growing trend to reduce overall system costs. Two important resources of every maintenance department are repair shops and spare parts. In this work, we consider a system consisting of mine drills at multiple areas in a mine. In each area, a number of identical drills are operational. When a failure occurs, the defective component should be repaired in a designated repair shop. The failed component can be replaced immediately if a spare part is available. Otherwise, the drill is down until a component is repaired and put back into service. In this paper, the effect of pooling resources is examined, and the conditions under which it is beneficial to pool the resources are investigated. In addition, determining the optimal number of stand-by units, equipment or spare parts, in each case is of interest.

"AbstractIn the separation of lead and zinc concentrates from the ore from Cominco's Sullivan mine at Kimberley, • B.C., an iron sulphide concentrate is also produced, some of which is roasted to provide sulphuric add for the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer. The iron oxide calcine from the roaster is potentially a valuable raw material for the production of pig iron and steel. To evaluate this material, six tons of .pig iron was produced from it in an experimental 75 k.w. electric furnace at Trail. The pig iron alone, and also in varying proportions with structural steel scrap and commercial pig iron, was used in the production of basic electric furnace steel at the Mines Branch Laboratories, Ottawa. Details are given of the steel making and fabrication procedure, of the visual and microscopic examination, and of the extensive series of tests on the steel produced. BRITISH Guiana, Great Britain's only South American colony, may be reached by very comfortable steamers, both from North America and Europe. The trip from North American Atlantic ports requires about 12 to 14 days; that from Europe about 18 to 20 days. A number of steamship lines, including Canadian, American, and Dutch, have regular sailings between North America and British Guiana, with calls en route at various interesting ports in the West Indies and northern South America. Moreover, several lines, including British, German, and French, have steamships operating regularly between Europe and the West Indies. Indeed, so popular have the West Indian voyages become in recent years that, during the winter months, special cruises in considerable number are organized for many vessels that ply in the trans-Atlantic service in the summer. A trip to British Guiana, therefore, has become a delightful experience. After visits at the various attractive Leeward and Windward islands and Trinidad, the approach to the low, flat, British Guiana coast, with its muddy coastal waters extending for many miles offshore, is somewhat of a contrast. Arrival in Guiana waters is signalled by the appearance of the modern high-power Demerara Light, located "on a shoal about twelve miles from the mouth of Demerara river. From this point, if the tide is right, a pilot takes the steamer across the bar, eight to ten miles offshore, and into Georgetown harbour. At high tide, the water above the bar ranges from 15 to 18 feet in depth, depending on whether it is neap tide or spring tide; at low tide, the corresponding depths are 9 to 11 feet. As the bar is of soft mud, however, it is usually possible for vessels to pass over it with a draught of about two feet in excess of that indicated by the tide tables. Upon nearing the shore, one sees first the Georgetown wireless towers, then the light-house and the tall chimneys of sugar mills and of various factories in Georgetown, and finally the palms and other tropical trees and the houses of Georgetown itself along the sea shore and the east bank of Demerara river. Extensive wharves operated by various exporting and importing companies stretch along the river bank and activity prevails in Georgetown harbour. The principal exports are sugar, rice, gold, diamonds, bauxite, balata, lumber, fruit and other tropical products. The imports are food-stuffs, wearing apparel, and manufactured materials of many kinds.

A DEPOSIT of hematite occurs on Black island, lake Winnipeg, at a point known locally as Red Rock, on the south shore of the island directly across from Clements point. The mail boat from the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus at Riverton, crossing the lake to Manigotogan twice weekly, passes near Red Rock and provides a convenient means of transportation to this part of Black island (Figure 1). HISTORICAL The occurrence of hematite on Black island has been known for a long time. Dowling's report of 1898 states(1): "An iron-ore deposit on the south side has been known' for many years, and on Jeffrey's map of 1762, showing Canada and northern part of Louisiana, Iron island is shown a short distance south of the narrows, evidently the same as the Black island of today".

"Finance Minister Paul Martin's second budget might be good for Canada's mining industry in the long run, but the budget raises a number of concerns for the industry in the near term. The budget papers suggest that the 25% resource allowance is not working as intended, and report that the Department of Finance will be reviewing this valuable allowance. The so-called ""large corporations tax"" rate will be increased. This annual tax, which is imposed on a corporation's capital even when the corporation is not in production, is particularly harmful to the mining sector.IntroductionThe Honourable Paul Martin, in his second federal budget, emphasized spending cuts and made only modest tax changes. "The paper identifies two of the main problems encountered in recent hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver: firstly, the plant recovery is lower than anticipated from the testwork; secondly, the metallurgical accounting figures cannot be reconciled.The principal reasons for the plant recovery being lower than the testwork are discussed, together with solutions that can minimize these problems both during the design stage and during the plant operation after the problems have manifest themselves.The reasons for the difficulties in metallurgical accounting are analyzed by reviewing the various components of the plant figures. "Can the ever-increasing tonnages of ore and waste being mined today be accommodated simply by using bigger and better crushers? This paper updates the principal author’s earlier publication, “Crushing Plant Design and Layout Considerations” (SME Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practise, and Control, 2002). It reviews the latest primary crushing and large cone crusher designs. Its goal is to help consultants and operators select the optimal equipment and custom-designed items in the material handling flowsheet from the mine to the mill, maximizing operating hours per year.INTRODUCTIONAre larger crushers the answer to meeting the demands of existing or new mining projects for increased tonnage? The principal author’s previous paper in the year 2002 on ""Crushing Plant Design and Layout Considerations"" provided a detailed design and layout review for the design of primary and fine crushing (Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary) mineral processing facilities. Some of the conclusions in this previous paper had predicted that larger crushers for primary and fine crushing would be beneficial and contribute to the further development of mineral processing. Larger crushers for primary and fine crushing applications are now available.The rock size reduction process, from the mine to the selected milling process facility has not changed since man first broke a rock to get at the interesting mineralization within. The rock size reduction process circuit from the mine to the mill can be summarized into four (4) stages:• Stage 1: Mining ( Rock Breakage and Fragmentation)• Stage 2: Pre-Screening (Scalping)• Stage 3: Primary Crushing• Stage 4: Fine Crushing (Secondary, Tertiary and Quaternary; the crushers used in this stage are identified by the titles which usage has conferred on them)Plant throughput and ore delivery schedule will form the basis for flowsheet design and equipment selection. Once a project's design criteria and the mine plan has been established, the actual circuit's utilization percentage (percentage of hours when the circuit is being utilized) can be optimized for each of the four stages. The mining and process departments are the key stake holders in the selection of the final comminution circuit and both departments should be familiar with and contribute to the design of the circuit."

INTRODUCTION THE electrical system associated with the mining development of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, may be conveniently divided into three main parts, namely, the Island Falls power plant, the transmission line, and the distribution systems at the mine and metallurgical plants. For a description of the Island Falls power plant and the transmission line, the reader is referred to the paper, to be presented at this meeting, by R. W. Davis and M.F. Huffaker (1). The transmission line and sectionalizing combinations are shown diagrammatically in Figure 1. The present paper deals with the distribution systems at the Flin Flon mine and metallurgical plants. THE FLIN FLON DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM In the high-tension sub-station at Flin Flon, each incoming 110 kv. line is provided with manually operated, gang-type disconnecting switches. Each line is connected to Canadian General Electric type F.H.K. 39-60B-F.2 T.P.S.T. 110 kv. 400 amp. oil circuit breakers, each provided with M.K.4 centrifugal motor-operated closing mechanism. Gang-type disconnecting switches are installed on each side of incoming line breakers, and a complete ring bus system is formed through station tie breaker, which is' further provided with gang-type disconnecting switches on either side. The?bus tie breaker is of Canadian Westinghouse design, type G.22B, 110 kv., 400-amp., solenoid-operated. All three breakers are provided with bushing-type current transformers, and the two line breakers are further equipped with bushing-type potential devices. Oxide film lightning arresters (121 kv.) are installed on each incoming line and are located outside the station. Each line is further provided with interlocked gang-operated ground disconnecting switches. All disconnecting switches are mechanically connected to auxiliary switches, which provide pilot service to indicating lamps in the remote-control room, located in a separate building.

"In June 1985, Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) was established. During the past 30 years, various major achievements are made in the discipline of rock mechanics and rock engineering field, especially in the last ten years. This paper will discuss the main rock engineering progress in association with China National Science and Technology Awards, “973 Program”, and “Tan Tjongkie Lecture”. The current status of rock engineering in China and some hot problems are summarized. Furthermore, some suggestions are given for addressing those problems. INTRODUCTIONThe modern concept of rock mechanics and engineering was initiated and developed after the Second World War. In this regard, the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) was established in 1962, subsequently further promotes its development. In June 1985, the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering was established. Various chief scientists, including professors Tan Tjangkie, Pan Jiazheng, Sun Jun, Wang Sijing, Qian Qihu, have made their huge efforts to the development of Rock Mechanics and Engineering in terms of the large-scale rock engineering projects in China.The achievements in the last 30 years significantly promote the development of China in different fields, such as energy, transportation, national defense and other national economy and major infrastructure facilities (Wang et al. 2004; Qian 2010, 2011). In other words, these projects also promoted the science and technology progress in rock mechanics and engineering across the world. Reviewing and analyses of the experiences on those key rock projects are beneficial to its technological development. She and Dong (2013), in view of literature statistical analysis, discussed the status and research progress in rock mechanics field associated with the last 30-year China's developments, including the rock strength and deformation theory, rock fracture and damage mechanics, the constitutive relation of rock dynamics, rock field coupling, rock reinforcement and stability analysis, etc. The challenging issues in rock mechanics were also proposed, which are the main concerns in rock engineering practices, engineering exploration, design, construction and operation."

IN recent years, most of the reconnaissance work of the Geological Survey of Canada has been mapped on a scale of 1 inch to 4 miles. Topographic base maps, commonly made from aerial photographs, were available to the geologist for such work. The advent of war curtailed aerial photography for civilian purposes, and by 1941 all areas already photographed had been geologically mapped. Nevertheless, the need for geological maps to assist post-war prospecting was so apparent, and the country to be covered is so vast, that some new method of rapid mapping had to be devised. It was felt that the need would be met if geological maps could be produced at a scale of 1 inch to 8 miles, provided they were sufficiently accurate in topographic detail to serve as guides to travel. Though in such maps there would be considerable sacrifice of geological detail, they would serve to outline, at least approximately, the major geological units, some of which might prove of sufficient interest to warrant later detailed study. It seemed that such mapping would be particularly useful in the northern regions of Canada which the work of early explorers has indicated are underlain largely by granitic rocks. These, so far as is known, are barren of mineral deposits, but within them are known to be areas or bands of 'greenstones' of the type that, in some localities, have been found to contain valuable orebodies. The problem, then, was to devise a method of mapping, particularly of such greenstone bands, that would make it possible to cover a relatively large area-say 30,000 square miles-in one season and at a cost below that of 4-mile mapping, with, of course, some sacrifice of accuracy. The problem seemed to be threefold: (a) to observe as much of the bed-rock as possible; (b) to produce a topographical map of as much of the area as possible, with particular reference to portions of geological interest; and (c) to cover as large an area as possible in a limited time, which meant faster modes of travel than have hitherto been used. The obvious answer to all three phases of the problem was the use of aircraft. If rock types could be broadly differentiated from the air, reconnaissance traverses by air would supply the answer to the first part of the problem. For topography, air photographs taken on reconnaissance flights appeared to be the answer. For the third phase of the problem, the use of aircraft was ideal.

"The delivered price of any mineral is the determining factor in converting untapped resources into economic resources. Transporting the minerals from the mine to the market plays a significant part in the total package. The expansion of the Western minerals industry in the last ten years has been paralleled by improved transportation systems to reduce cost, increase accessibility of resources and get the minerals to market in the shortest time possible. A review is made of developments, such as unit trains, complex multi-modal systems and containerized transport, over the last ten years, with specific movement outlined. The total transportation package of land transport, port and terminal facilities, and water transport, where needed, is stressed. As the volume of minerals movement expands, increasingly sophisticated and integrated transportation systems will have to be utilized. The development of solids pipelines and other possibilities is outlined."

IN 1932, the No. 4 shaft at Wright-Hargreaves mine was completed to a depth of 4,000 feet, and the lowest operating level at that time was at 3,900 feet. It was realized that the existing pumping system, using triplex plunger pumps at somewhat irregular depths in the mine, would be in-adequate to take care of the increasing volume of water that would have to be handled as mining operations expanded. Accordingly, in February, 1932, after a thorough study of the whole matter, it was decided to instal an entirely new, automatically controlled, system of pumping, employing centrifugal pumps, with their characteristically trouble-free performance, operated by off-peak power.

"The Cenex orebody occurs at the intersection of northwest and northeast-trending fault zones that formed during post-Hudsonian uplift. The ore is localized in breccia zones, along faults, and in veins and adjacent wallrocks. The host rocks are Tazin quartzo-fe/dspathic mylonites and ultramylonites and chloritesericite- quartz-graphite-feldspar mylonite schist. The uraniumbearing minerals are finely disseminated pitchblende and uraniferous titanate.The earliest mineralization may have been associated with /ate-stage retrograde metamorphism in the mylonite schist. The main stages of mineralization were associated with brecciation, hematization, carbonatization, and chloritization of the mylonites and ultramylonites. Uranium mineralization was clearly much later than any igneous or metamorphic activity associated with the Hudsonian orogeny.Late post-orogenic uplift, erosion, and deposition of the Martin continental clastics in fault basins were coeval with uranium mineralization. The deposit is consistent with a meteoric-hydrologic system constituting a source for orebearing fluids, hence the close spatial relationship of the uranium deposits in the Beaverlodge area with the basal unconformity of the Martin Group."

Magnesium-based alloys are of growing interest for many industrial applications due to their favourable strength-to-weight ratio and excellent castability. Mass reduction has advantages in many industrial sectors for example, in automotive, a reduction in mass improves fuel economy and can lead to more efficient mechanical systems by reducing the weight of moving parts like wheels, gears, pistons. However, the relatively poor corrosion and wear resistance limits the use of magnesium and its alloys in many potential applications. The patented Keronite® plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process enables manufacturers to overcome such problems and, in its latest generation equipment has been developed to industrial realisation for high volume production. This paper presents microstructural characteristics and corrosion performance of two most widely used high pressure die-cast magnesium alloys AZ91D and AM6OB with a duplex corrosion protection coating system that comprised a thin Keronite pre-treatment followed by a subsequent automotive grade final powder coat.

"Hydraulic rock drilling equipment has been in use at Falconbridge over the past two years in both production and development situations. This paper deals with the experience gained in the application of hydraulic drilling in the company's mines and discusses the benefits and problems encountered during their use. The paper primarily focuses on technical, operating, maintenance and economic aspects of the machines, and does not attempt to compare the performances of different machines from the various manufacturers.IntroductionThe Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited are comprised of five operating mines and two mines under development. All the production comes from underground mines, mostly at depths below 1000 metres. The company, faced with increases in operating costs and difficult mining conditions, has continued to seek solutions with the help of new mining technology.The development of electric-hydraulic drilling machines in Europe had been pursued with great interest and, in 1979, a decision was made to test these machines to prove their technical and economic viability under operating conditions. Since then, a number of electric-hydraulic machines have been evaluated in different situations and currently nine hydraulic machines are being used in the company's various mines. These machines are comprised of two-boom drilling jumbos for development, one-boom machines for longhole drilling and a large-hole-diameter drilling rig for blasthole drilling. One hydraulic jumbo has also been used in a cut-and-fill stope."
