Syria has about 500 million ton deposit of minerals having 34 per cent iron content with alumina and silica as major impurities. Efforts were made to see the feasibility of concentration by four different methods involving washing, high intensity magnetic separation, reduction roasting and magnetic separation and acid leaching technique. It was observed that the reduction roasting with magnetic separation yields a concentrate with high iron (62.3 per cent) content without requiring water which is a scarce raw material in the region. The paper concludes that the detailed study may be made following this route to optimise the process Parameters.

Engineering education has become a matter of national concern, at last, so I would like to talk about the links between the mining industry, the universities and technological developments. The Australasian mining industry and the mining schools have collaborated closely since the first school was established in 1871 and during those years there were a series of remarkable technological developments. For example:In the late 1880s George AndersoIl Richard developed chloride leaching of gold at Mt Morgan. This made a large difference to the wealth of Mt Morgan Mining Ltd.In the mid 1890s Robert Sticht demonstrated that pyrite smelting was an economically feasible process at Mt Lyell and the wealth which came to Mt Lyell Mining Co from his outstanding work made it one of the great companies in the country.During the first 15 years of this century flotation was developed at Broken Hill and it has proved to be one of the great technological inventions of this century.In the 1920s G K Williams started his outstanding work on lead smelting and refining at Port Pirie, this was work which ultimately re-wrote the text book on lead metallurgy and established Port Pirie as the mecca for lead metallurgists.In the 1920s also Frank Stillwell, later joined by Austin Edwards, established the new science of mineragraphy at the University of Melbourne. They were both great geologists, both were superb scientists and oddly enough both were outstanding athletes.In the 1930s Dr Ian Wark, a man in the front rank of Australian scientists of any period, started his outstanding work on flotation, work which resulted in a text book which remains a leader in its field today.In the 1930s also Arnold Black at Broken Hill South Ltd picked up the work which had been done at Mt Lyell many years previously and eventually wrote the papers on hydraulic fill which demonstrated that he led the world in fill technology. What a remarkable story of achievement it was, it laid the groundwork for the great industry we have today. It was possible because the industry was well supported by outstanding university schools and I would like to talk about some of these.

Hargraves (1983) has reviewed the phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas with special attention to Australian occurrences. The purpose of this discussion is to highlight some problems and omissions in his review that reflect particularly on the authors' structural geological investigations of outburst-prone coal seams.It is surprising to find that much of the authors' reported work has either been glossed over or the results distorted by Hargraves (1983) and it is, therefore, important to clarify the contribution that structural analysis of coal seams can make.For many years it has been known that faults provided preferred loci for gas outbursts (for example, Briggs 1920-21) but the roie that faults played in outburstprone seams was unclear. The present authors reviewed the association of faults and outbursts drawing upon local investigations and the world-wide literature (Shepherd et aI., 1981), and discussed some wideranging aspects that result from the high coincidence of faults and outburst sites. Without repeating large segments of this article the authors will discuss four aspects of coal seam faulting and fracturing.

Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. Gold, silver and palladium may be separated from the other base metals and sulphur contained in copper sulphide precipitates derived from the Sherritt-Gordon nickel process using a process involving an oxidation roast, a reduction roast and a Cu(II)/acetonitrile leach. Sulphur is removed as SO, in an oxidation roast and the hot calcine is reduced with carbon, or with carbon plus cuprous chloride. The resulting product contains metallic copper which is readily dissolved with cupric ions in aqueous acetonitrile solution. Copper powder is recovered by thermal disproportionation. The residue contains the bulk of the iron and precious metals and may be treated by a number of methods, including direct cyanidation or melting with suitable fluxes. Melting the residue will produce a copper alloy containing the precious metals and remove the iron as a slag. The alloy can be recycled to the copper leaching stage or sent for toll refining depending on the precious metal content. Impurities from the leaching circuit are controlled by a bleed circuit which in one approach utilizes the SO, from the calciner to produce Chevreul's salt and separates copper from the soluble cobalt and nickel. Alternatively, the bleed may be directed back to the main refinery copper boil stage or oxydrolysis stage.

A tectonic interpretation of the Coromandel Peninsula which suggests that the basement underwent tensional collapse at its northern and southern ends would permit more ready penetration of late stage magmatic fluids. This hypothesis is consistent with regional trends of the chloride content of low grade geothermal waters and of the yield of gold and silver per unit weight of quartz worked. The consequences of such a model are that mercury should not only be a good pathfinder for Coromandel gold, but that it should be correlative with ratios of base metals high in the zoning or paragenetic sequences to those lower in the sequences. This is demonstrated successfully in an area of mineralisation in the southern Coromandel.

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. In this paper, the scientific bases of creation of simulation modelling systems of excavator-truck-conveyor complex work are represented. During the simulation modelling process of big mining and transport systems work the strict and full account of an order and sequence of all operations of simulated process is carried out. Step-by-step fixing of mining and transport system elements condition - excavators in loading and unloading points, trucks, road section, unloading points in storage bin, crushers and conveyors is conducted. Work and idle time of system elements are considered. During modelling process the information characterising system work as a whole is collected. It allows us to establish qualitative and quantitative influence of each system element on the final results of its functioning and provides to estimate rationality of a particular organisation variant of mining and transport equipment interaction from technological positions. Simulation results are: economic and technological indicators of mining and transport complex functioning of the period for each subsystem, as well as on the road, the points of loading, unloading and reloading.

A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of copper cementation with zinc in sulphate solution. For copper concentrations of the order of 10 p.p.m., a porous, adherent deposit is formed on the zinc surface and this has a significant influence on the reaction rate. When the specific mass of deposit is less than about O· 35 mg/cm2 the surface may be considered as smooth and the rate is described by simple convective counter diffusion of zinc and copper ions through a laminar diffusion boundary layer to the deposit-solution interface. In the presence of additional deposit, the diffusional mass transfer rate is increased by increased surface roughness.The rate under these conditions is first order, with the degree of enhancement independent of further increases in the specific deposit mass. It has been proven theoretically and experimentally that the use of 10 - 30 per cent DRI in blast furnace along with iron ore or sinter results in lower coke rate and higher productivity. However, to-date this remains unpractised on a regular basis mainly because of economic reasons. The DRI produced by several methods are expensive and difficult to store/handle in large quantities because of its reactive nature and thus DRI in blast furnace remains unacceptable.

Precision surface mining is increasingly occupying a significant role in open pit mining. Improvements in technology now allow continuous surface mining of material well above 140 MPa (20 300 psi) efficiently and cost effectively when compared to drilling and blasting/primary crushing methods. These include the elimination of the use explosives and primary crushing, the ability to precisely extract the ore from the waste, or separate ores of varying chemistry and mine thin seams and non-homogenous orebodies cost effectively. In addition, precision surface mining extends the useful life of a mine by extending the mine boundaries. It can expand production capacity in existing mines and is particularly cost effective in greenfield start-up mines. Precision mining techniques result in higher percentage recoveries. This paper reviews several of these techniques for the Terrain Leveler« surface excavation machine (SEM), and shows their impact. Vermeer's current approach to precision surface mining is utilisation of the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. Several units have been proven in round-the-clock, seven day operations throughout the world. Among other innovations are design simplicity, stability, maneuverability, rear-mounted tilting drum and top-down cutting. The impact of these items are discussed in more detail in the paper. After a detailed analysis of the importance of machine availability on overall mine performance, Vermeer has extended its equipment line to include a direct-drive option for its T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. In addition, improvements in dust suppression are presented. While the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM is of optimum size and cost in small and medium sized mines, Vermeer has recognised that larger mines require larger machines with increased capacities. Vermeer will prototype the T1655 Terrain Leveler SEM later this year. Specifications of this machine and up-to-date preliminary results are presented. A discussion of the role of each machine size and driving mechanisms are included. Finally, the next stage in Vermeer's providing solutions to the surface mining community will be described - a continuous loader. The impact on current mine planning is presented using a detailed computer program developed for studying the impact of loading techniques and higher production rates on mine plan optimisation.

Present roof bolting practices in the collieries of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. are outlined. Roof support has been improved since introducing roof bolts and it is hoped to increase the reliability of the bolts still further.Expansion-shell, and split and wedge roof bolts five to eight feet long are placed by "Atlas Falcon" and "Fletcher" roof bolters. Both anchorage and tightening have presented some problems.Good panel supervision is required if systematic roof bolting is to be properly co-ordinated with coal production without unnecessary delay to either. Successful roof bolting can only be the product of conscientious men and supervisors who are all convinced of its value. A rigid operational code should be established early and maintained.INTRODUCTIONRoof bolting is a method of support which is permanent and reduces or eliminates the need for other support; The method was pioneered in America and was first experimentally investigated in Australian collieries at Elrington in 1949 (McKensey, 1953). Pneumatic installation methods were employed. Subsequently, a method of using standard hand-held electric coal drills was developed at John Darling Colliery (Horseman, 1954). Pneumatic roof bolting equipment was first operated in the collieries of Australian Ironand Steel Pty. Ltd (A.I. &. S.) in 1951. Since then various hydraulically operated mobile machines have been installed in Australian collieries and these, together with improved pneumatic equipment, form the two present basic methods of placing ,roof bolts. Roof bolt anchorage is achieved by either split and wedge or expansion-shell bolts.The two broad types of roof bolting are 1. consolidation of strata, and 2. suspension support.

The Karangahake deposit was the second largest producer of gold-silver bullion in the Hauraki Goldfield, New Zealand. New mapping of a 2 + 3 km (6 km2) area demonstrates that hydrothermal alteration surrounds productive veins. Wallrocks proximal to veins are intensely altered and alteration decreases toward the margin of the system.   At Karangahake, distinct zonation of adularia, calcite, epidote, illite and illite-smectite surrounds gold-bearing lodes with unaltered rocks containing magnetite and plagioclase occurring on the margins. Adularia, illite, illite-smectite, and calcite zonation defines hydrothermal alteration extending 2 km to the east of productive lodes. Epidote and adularia zonation occurs proximal to veins. The adularia zone compares well to potassium/thorium studies conducted in the area. Illite zonation is well developed to the east of the veins grading into interstratified illite-smectite containing 5 to 40 per cent smectite 1.5 km from the Maria Lode. Calcite is restricted to the east of the study area occurring in 18 per cent off surface samples. Less altered rocks containing plagioclase and magnetite occur distal to veins. The magnetite occurrence compares well to aeromagnetic studies conducted in the area.   Adularia and coexisting adularia and albite indicate the host rocks were highly permeable. Epidote, illite, illite-smectite and previous fluid inclusion evidence implies temperatures graded from >240¦C in the core of the system to approximately 150¦C on the periphery. The alteration association of quartz, adularia, calcite, pyrite, chlorite, illite and illite-smectite reflects a near-neutral to weakly alkaline water. Calcite occurrence and the absence of zeolite imply the fluid contained significant dissolved CO2.

Hot briquetting is a reliable, fully developed industrial concept for the passivation of direct reduced iron produced with the various processes of direct reduction. During hot briquetting, the large specific surface area of direct reduced iron is drastically reduced, and therefore the well-known problems caused by reoxidation and overheating are avoided. Even the shipping instructions published by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) confirm that Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) can be handled and shipped without special precautions. From the mid-1970s until today, after extensive pilot testing of the technology, a number of industrial plants for the hot briquetting of direct reduced iron have gone into operation. Additional hot briquetting plants for already established but also for new direct reduction processes are tinder construction or in different stages of planning. This paper describes the characteristics of HBI and its current industrial application for various Direct Reduction Processes.

This paper reviews the current techniques employed in the prediction of subsidence and how they have been applied to partial extraction systems. The method using influence functions to describe the shape of the profile is investigated in detail and has been adopted to model the subsidence over workings in Huntly. It is compared with the profile methods developed in the United Kingdom and found to predict the subsidence profile more accurately than these methods.

This paper discusses the progress of the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine from the pre-feasibility study completed in 2005, through commencement of development access in 2008, completion of the feasibility in 2010 and cave initiation in late 2015. This fourth lift of caving in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is located 500 m below the currently producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and represents approximately half a billion tonnes of ore and around 1900 planned drawpoints, scheduled to be mined at a peak of 80 000 t/d.The paper reviews the mine design, access requirements, planned footprint sequence and major fixed facility installations such as ventilation, oreflow and shops. A discussion of the preproduction development and construction activities and some of the critical technical challenges overcome during this time frame are addressed, as well as the cave initiation process undertaken in late 2015 and the ramp-up of production and progression of caving.CITATION:Casten, T, Priatna, A and Rumbino, H, 2016. Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. Even strong lineations have been ignored. The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.
