Based on the examination of thirty sets of contiguous matte and slag samples taken from industrial nickel smelters a relationship is predicted between oxidic nickel in slag, oxygen in matte and the Ni/Fe ratio in the matte. Oxidic nickel in the slag is found to increase with an increase in oxygen content of a matte of constant Ni/Fe ratio, and it is proposed that the relationship may be used to predict nickel solubility in slag from a knowledge of matte composition alone.

A commercial Philips X-ray Fluorescence (X.R.F.) analyser was converted to an experimental instrument suitable for determination of the accuracy to be expected of X.R.F. on line analyses of concentrator slurries. Problems with stability of slurry sample presentation were eliminated by a number of minor modifications.By the use of multiple linear regression techniques instrument calibration equations including error terms were determined for copper flotation feed slurries. Results indicated that the accuracy of copper and iron analyses of flowing slurry samples could approach that of static pressed powder samples.Possible means of reducing the error terms to a level of at least that of pressed powdel' samples involve alternative methods of compensating for the per cent solids in the slurry, Design is under way for installation of a plant unit.

These may be of interest to members examining the collection of ores, etc., from Mount Lyell, which is a feature of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, and may have some value as geological records. No. 7 and No 8 are analyses of samples of footwall rock from the Lyell Tharsis mine. No. 7 is hard, crystalline, fine-grained, and of homogenous structure. It has a dark-red colour, due to ferric oxide (Fig 1); and was taken from a place eight feet east of the ore body and about half way between the 50 feet and 100 feet levels. No. 8 is from the same excavation and from four feet east of the ore body it is softer than No. 7, being easily scratched with a knife-blade, of a deeper dark-red colour, and has a slaty cleavage.

The Leigh Creek Coalfield is owned and operated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia to supply fuel to the Northern Power Station. To supply electricity at lowest cost, a costing and decision process that establishes the role of the Leigh Creek Coalfield in the overall system planning and operation is required. The costing is integrated in that it is based not just on a particular mine plan but on the wider need to supply a particular electrical demand. The detail costing has evolved over time from manual to main-frame computer to microcomputer techniques. Now there is a choice between fast consistent costs and a slower but more detailed and flexible costing.

Two types of low-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation may be recognised in volcanic terranes. Chalcedonic Silica- Adularia-Illite type mineralisation is most common in rhyolitic terranes, whereas Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia- Kaolinite) type mineralisation is more typically formed in andesitic terranes. A third type of epithermal mineralisation, the high sulphidation or Vuggy Silica-Alunite- Kaolinite-Illite type, is also common in andesitic terranes. Episodic violent boiling, accompanying hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions, characteristic of geothermal systems in rhyolitic terranes, is stressed for the formation of Chalcedonic Silica mineralisation. Such boiling of deeply circulating meteoric groundwater, with some magmatic fluid contribution, provides chalcedonic veining, episodic banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S from the fluid to cause major gold deposition. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably caused by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwater with ascending deep geothermal fluids beneath andesitic strato- volcanoes. The cooling effect, oxidation, and increased acidity, overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of metals. Extensive formation of base-metal sulphides further enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling is restricted to local structural dilation sites, potentially producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

The Gippsland Basin in south-eastern Australia has an area of approximately 46 000 sq km. It is one of the world's major coal and petroleum bearing basins, with most of the former occurring in the smaller one fifth on-shore part. The stratigraphy, structure and economic resources of the Tertiary sedimentary pile is now well known through extensive drilling for coal and petroleum. In contrast, the older Cretaceous sequences through their lesser economic importance are relatively less explored. The sedimentational history of the Gippsland Basin has largely followed along similar lines of development to the many other southern Australian basins since the Cretaceous break-up of Gondwanaland. However, the scale of accumulation of coal and hydrocarbon source rocks is unprecedented and differentiates this basin, for reasons less well understood, from the others. Large scale open cut brown coal mining since the late-1920s has been carried out in the western extremities of the basin, while vigorous extraction of some two thirds of Australian petroleum products taken place in the offshore part. Brown coal seam thicknesses and economically winnable reserves are huge and outrank most other brown coal basins of the world. Development of the resource currently meets the need for electricity generation throughout the State of Victoria, but other future developments such as conversion to oil, being investigated.

Reliable and discriminating small, laboratory scale methods of study have been developed and used successfully in the critical evaluation and interpretation of the carbonization characteristics of a wide range of raw and prepared materials, the variable factors in the coking process, and' the mechanical properties of the carbonized products. The simple and highly economic technologies have been successfully and effectively integrated with detailed surface and subsurface geological exploration programmes (particularly in the coalfields of the .Central Bowen Basin of Queensland) as well as with quality and utilization studies of a nUII!ber of representative Australian and Japanese coals. Previously, only the results of comparatively large, laboratory scale studies have provided information reasonably indicative of those to be anticipated hi industrial practice, but these suffer serious disadvantages in terms of economy of material, time and resources; they have been difficult or even impossible to use as an essential part of any normal or comprehensive exploration programme. On the other hand, although previously developed smaller scale laboratory methods derive considerable advantage from their flexibility, amenity to critical control and inherent potential for speed and economy, they have hitherto permitted no effective or direct comparison with the results of industrial practice or full scale assessment. Comprehensive study results achieved through technologies developed recently at the University 'of Sydney demonstrate that carefully controlled small laboratory scale methods of evaluation quite suitable for use in exploration and, other programmes may be used to predict with considerable accuracy and reliability (in some cases exceedingthat of pilot scale study) the principal strength index of one of the established and internationally recognized full sc:ale tests-the Japanese Industrial-Standard Drum Test. It is probable that further study may establish satisfactory correlations with the results of other standard industrial procedures.

At the inception of the gold-mining industry at Kalgoorlie the small supply of firewood required for steaming purposes was naturally all drawn from the limited local areas, which promised soon to become denuded. With the advent of the railway toKalgoorlie came the ever increasing machinery and steam power, and the accompanying demand for firewood so increased that the fuel contractors began their operations, by following the timber belts along the Yilgarn railway line, and graduallygetting further westward, until at present we find them as far as Woolgangie, 63 miles from Kalgoorlie, and with the regular railway rates, I0. per ton per mile, this maybe considered the limit of payable timber at current rates. Although in the early days the reserve of timber along the railway line must have appeared as incalculable and inexhaustible as that of coal did in Europe a couple of centurys ago, the day is now near us when even this source will fail to meet the demands made upon it, for, although a good two years' supply is available or the areas under the axe, yet it is time to look ahead and find from whence the future supplies are to be drawn. Along the railways we find the zone of felling operations limited for want ofcommunication, and only such portions of the forests as are within six or seven miles of the railway come under the axe at present while virgin forests to the rear remain practically unexploited. It is only in the course of the past sixteen months that the firewood industry has developed...

As part or a programme to raise lead smelter capacity from 65.000 to 140.000 tons bullion per annum. one new 1000 sq. ft. updraught area sintering machine replaced eight small downdraught machines.The metallurgical specifications were based on and laboratory tests at Mount Isa. Existing practice filtering concentrate as part of the charge preparation system and discharging wet filter cake to mixing was retained. This dictated a hot return fines circuit to maintain the required feed moisture content at low return sinter ratios.The engineering specifications provided for cenlralized control of plant and process, minimum operating labour, high plant availabi;lity and highest standardsof hygeine. Crushing and conveying capacity was set to cater for the most optimistic level of sintering capacity.On start-up a number of major engineering and hygiene problems became apparent, in addition to normal teething troubles. These problems have largely been overcome and reliable operation. at less than optimum production rate is now being achieved.

Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K1) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and tne formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

As environmental costs incurred by the mining industry become increasingly subject to critical analysis, new technology is necessary to ensure the further development of good relationships between the industry and community. Phytoremediation and phytomining are technologies that have the potential to capture the imagination and approval of the public. Phytoremediation , the in situ use of plants to extract heavy metals from a contaminated substrate, could offer an environmentally and cost-friendly alternative to traditional remediation techniques. Phytomining is the in situ removal of metals from a contaminated site or subeconomic orebody with the additional aim of recovering from the plant an economic amount of metal. Plants used in such operations, hyperaccumulators, accumulate large quantities of one or more target metals in their above-ground herbage. Upon harvesting and incineration, this plant material yields a low-volume, sulphide-free æbio-oreÆ, which can either be safely disposed of, or if the metal is of sufficient value, smelted. Investigations into the economics of phytomining nickel from ultramafic (serpentine) soils, showed that Alyssum bertolonii and Berkheya coddii could remove over 100 kg of nickel per hectare per annum from land with nickel concentrations well below the cut-off grade for conventional mining. It also appears possible to æinduceÆ the hyperaccumulation of gold into plants growing on gold tailings, or on stockpiled, low-grade gold ore. The plants used for phytoremediation and phytomining are useful colonisers as they are necessarily hardy and withstand extremes of salinity, metal toxicity and water stress that hinder the success of current revegetation procedures. As part of a rehabilitation operation, these plants may alter the geochemistry of a substrate making it more amenable to the growth of native species that should be used to restore a mining site to pre-operating conditions.

The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m × 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. Geological understanding must advance as mining progresses to ensure continued resource growth and optimal extraction of reserves.CITATION:Lorusso, G, Rogers, J and Tripp, G, 2017. An integrated palynological and sedimentological investigation of four wells from the eastern margin of the Gippsland Basin has resulted in a scheme for classification of palynofacies in this area. Thirteen different palynofacies assemblages are recognised and assigned to particular environments based on the enclosing sediments, which range from alluvial, through coastal barrier to continental shelf environments. Close correlation is observed between the interpreted energy regime of the palynofacies assemblage, and that of the enclosing sediments. Assemblages characterised as reworking surfaces can be correlated with unconformity producing events (ie tectonic activity associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea), and some of the minor eustatic sea level Changes.

Further evidence is presented as to the widespread occurrence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in nature in association with sulphide minerals. Leaching rates are discussed in terms of the effect of environmental parameters, particularly Eh and pH, on the bacterial process.The methods used to investigate leaching phenomena are described and the advantages and limitations of each method are discussed. A theoretical treatment of the bacterial leaching process is given which indicates that the optimum conditions arrived at by traditional methods are compatible with those deduced from consideration of the mathematics of continuous culture and thermodynamics

A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

The Golden Cross Gold Mine is located at the head of the Waite kauri Ri ver, 8 km northwest of Waihi near the southern end of the Coromandel Range. The mine produces gold and silver from epithermal veins hosted by Miocene andesitic flows and pyroclastics of the Coromandel Group. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company Ltd (20 per cent). Mining is by open pit and underground methods. Mineralisation in a near-surface sheeted/stockworked vein zone is mined from the open pit. The deeper Empire Vein System is mined from underground where higher grade mineralisation is restricted to generally discrete veins. The open pit stockwork zone is west of and offset from the updip trend of the Empire Vein System. The Empire (hangingwall) Vein strikes generally north-northeast and dips steeply west. Dips become subvertical at greater depth. The hangingwall vein is a well developed, generally continuous structure with relatively high gold grades. A complex footwall vein system forms shallow west-dipping offshoots to the hangingwall vein. Structure and gold grades become increasingly erratic away from the hangingwall vein. The better developed footwall veins carry economic grades and high 'spot' grades over 50 g/t Au are not uncommon. Highest gold grades are associated with tightly crustiform banded sections of quartz veins and with dark fine grained siliceous breccias. The main hangingwall vein occupies a major north-northeast trending fault structure, the Empire Fault. Footwall veining forms within subordinate splinter fault zones. There has been extensive multidirectional pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation faulting. Fault manifestation is highly dependent on host rock characteristics. The central part of the hangingwall vein and surrounding silicified country rock has been shattered by a major fault structure, the West Mine Fault, forming a poorly consolidated, blocky quartz-breccia ore zone. Away from the more brittle ore zones and associated silicified envelope, wide clay-filled shears mark the major fault trends. Development of the deposit is considered to have occurred in two distinct stages related to separate episodes of dilational jog movement on the Empire Fault. The first phase reactivated the pre-existing Empire Fault as a dilational fissure with subordinate splinters on the footwall side. The Empire Vein System (hangingwall and associated footwall veining) formed during this phase. A second phase of renewed movement with further dilation resulted in more extensive fracturing of the Empire Vein and surrounding country rock and formed the sheeted/stockwork veining of the open pit. An upwards/westward migration of the hydrothermal system is assumed but fluid pathways between underground and open pit veining are unclear. Ore extraction and mining geology methods have responded to improved understanding of the grade and structural variability, and changing ground conditions inherent in the vein system. The underground mine produces ore from flatback cut and fill, post-pillar and bench stopes. Open pit and underground ores are campaign milled through a conventional CIP plant.

Mixed cobalt-nickel sulphides precipitated from ammoniacal process liquors derived from nickel sulphide concentrates, mattes, and reduced nickeliferous laterites have been characterized.The mixed sulphides are prone to oxidation on standing and are rapidly leached under relatively mild conditions. The kinetics of the leaching reactions are controlled principally by temperature and oxygen partial pressure. Although the samples have different CO:Ni ratios and have undergone varying degrees of oxidation, there is little difference in their leaching behaviour. The results suggest that a single plant would be able to process mixed sulphides of varying composition. Any copper and zinc present in the mixed sulphides as impurities also go into solution and must be removed prior to recovery of the cobalt and nickel in metallic form.

The Ernest Henry mine is a transverse sublevel cave (SLC), which is relatively unique due to the 45 degree inclination of the orebody. To economically recover ore, each sublevel is horizontally offset from the previous level by around 25 m, depending on the orebody geometry. Mine development, slotting and initial production within this zone occurs in a high stress abutment that increases in magnitude at depth. These areas are seismically active and close to the hanging wall where cave propagation is yet to initiate. High stress conditions and the close proximity to the cave seismogenic zone results in challenging geotechnical conditions in the step out zone of each level and requires management of hazards including stress driven rockfalls, rock bursts and pillar failure.This paper outlines how these hazards were forecast using numerical modelling and geotechnical monitoring. Risk management techniques included dynamic ground support design, development of a new mine layout and extraction sequence as well as delayed re-entry into seismically active areas. Ongoing monitoring, instrumentation measurements and field observations were used to track the effectiveness of the controls.Future production levels are forecast to experience increasing stress and seismicity, which will increase demand on excavations and installed ground support. The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

This paper reviews the changes in the coal industry over the past 30 years and attempts to predict the trends over the next ten years. The last 30 years have seen a steady concentration of production into fewer, larger mines, which operate on 3: more continuous basis, and a major increase in productivity per employee. Coal exports have increased from zero to almost half the country's total production. As well as major changes in exploration and mining equipment and the increasing use of computer tools, the industry now operates in a relatively new regulatory and commercial environment.   Safety legislation now requires the writing and enforcement of policies and procedures by the mining companies, rather than adherence to inflexible regulations enforced by an Inspector. Accident rates have decreased dramatically. The transition from coal mining licences to permits, requiring landowner consent and resource consents, is well under way. Environmental controls are now an essential aspect of the industry.   Equipment suppliers now offer maintenance services, production guarantees and flexible financing.  Contract miners offer mine design and restoration as part of the contract. In a similar approach, Solid Energy now offer an ash disposal service and assistance with resource consents to their customers as well as investment in technology to ensure a consistent product to demanding specifications. Solid Energy has proposals for energy centres which install and operate the coal burning appliances and simply sell energy to the customers. The next 10 years should see an intensification of these trends of bigger mines, more exports and greater technology and a 'package' approach to customer service.
