A multi-wire borehole instrumentation system was used to monitor strata movement caused by a retreating longwall face at the Ellalong Colliery, situated in the Lower Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Mechanical anchors were placed at various horizons in the borehole which extended from the surface to the extracted coal seam. The vertical movement of the anchors was monitored during mining. The zone of major disturbance was confined to 13 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam. The average dilation of strata in this zone was 6 per cent. Above the caving zone, the tensile strain was under 2mn/m except at one location, where it was `xmi/m. The subsidence trough under dynamic conditions was flatter than that under stationary conditions. The subsidence also depended upon the extent of strata fragmentation prior to undermining.

The development of paraprofessional courses in metallurgy and related disciplines, by the Department of Technical and Further Education in New South Wales, is outlined in this paper. The changing nature of metall- urgical educational requirements is summarised, and various attendance patterns discussed. The potential advantages of the sandwich system of College attendance, to the more distant sectors of the mineral processing and metallurgical industry is outlined. Some of the likely future trends in technician education are presented. These include the need to respond to the changing expectations of technician employers, as shown by industrial surveys, the role of experiential learning, the need to integrate courses so that students can build on prev- iously completed courses, the possibility that future technicians will require a multi- disciplinary background and the provision of easier access to technical college facilities by potential students and industries.

The new generation Hlsmelt« Direct Iron Ore Smelting Process is a CRA Limited technology initiative. The process development is now focussed on commercialisation. The goal is to have the first commercial vessel operating around the year 2000. The HIsmelt« Process, based on the abundantly available iron ore fines and the more readily available non-coking coals, has the potential to fundamentally change iron ore processing through the application of high intensity techniques to replace the current sinter/coke ovens/blast furnace .technologies. The process will have great potential in the rapidly growing economies of Asia where steelmaking aspirations are based around local market focussed plants. This potential can be. realised as a supplier of premium grade iron units to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking plants or as the front end to an ore based steel mill.

Since its formation in Papua New Guinea and raising of A$2 million in 1980, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) has grown to a company capitalised on the Australian Stock Exchange at about A$350 million. In 1995 the company produced some 237 000 ounces of gold, 700 000 ounces of silver and nearly 5000 tonnes of copper from its operations at Red Dome, in North Queensland and San Cristobal in The Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. This production contrasts with Niugini Mining's first mining venture at Mt Victor in the Eastern Highlands of PNG which yielded 20 000 ounces of gold and 11 600 of silver between 1987 and 1989. Following the formation of an exploration joint venture in 1982 with Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Ltd, now a subsidiary of RTZ, Niugini Mining's early recognition of the gold potential of volcanic rocks at plate margins led to discovery of the Lihir deposit in July 1982. This deposit containing about 42 million ounces of gold in resources, is one of the largest undeveloped gold deposits in the world. Following raising of equity funds through the float of Lihir Gold Ltd and debt finance in 1995, construction of the mine at a cost of US$673 million is now underway with first full-scale production at approximately 600 000 ounces of gold per year expected in early- 1998.

The sudden. explosion of relatively inexpensive digital process control computers has accelerated interest in the possibilities of economic savings by their use. In particular the metalliferous industries have shown that they are willing and capable 6f grasping this new technology and putting it to good use. These industries have a number of problems which need special attention. In many cases the process is difficult to measure and a reaction is often controlled by measuring a secondary effect, computing its relationship to the reaction and then applying the necessary corrective action. This creates problems in building the process model, designing the computer to process interface and in the subsequent system development. Environmentally the metalliferous industries create conditions which severely test sophisticated electronic equipment. Care taken in locating and housing this equipment is a major factor in ensuring reliability in Operation.

Canadian mining research has recently been reinvigorated through a pan-Canadian research strategy driven by the industry, the research community and government departments. These organisations have come together to form the Canada Mining Innovation Council, whose role is to focus and increase mining research in the country. One of the major themes of the organisation is environment; including major research initiatives on energy, tailings and environmental stewardship. Other major initiatives on exploration, mineral extraction and mineral processing will also consider environmental benefits in the research projects they undertake. All the initiatives have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. Membership to date includes most of the major mining companies operating in Canada and almost all of the mining-related universities. Georgius Agricola wrote in De Re Metallica in 1556 that a prudent a miner should not work in a region ruled by a tyrant-a person inimical to mining. In 1926, Associate Chief Sherman of the United States Forest Service in a speech stated, "It is the policy of the Forest Service to encourage the development of the mineral resources within the boundaries of the National Forests ... a man who fails to cultivate a friendly, helpful, cooperative spirit in his relations with those who are endeavoring to develop the mineral wealth of our mountains has no place in the Forest Service." Both statements are as true today as they were in 1556 and 1926. The challenge to the Forest Service and the mineral industry today is to maintain that cooperation in a world that has changed significantly since Agricola and Sherman. The United States Forest Service manages 77,000,000 hectares of land-mostly in the Western United States-an area equal in size to New South Wales. The vast majority-75 million hectares are National Forests, and 1.6 million hectares are National Grasslands. National Wilderness Areas account for 13 million hectares or rough- ly 17 per cent of the National Forest System. National Forest System lands (NFS) are some of the most visible, scenic and controversial lands in the country. They are also some of the most valuable for their mineral potential and production. The value of mineral produced exceeds US$4 billion per year. There are over 1200 producing mines, 15,000 oil and gas leases, and some of the largest lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum, molyb- denum, and coal deposits in the hemisphere. Every year the Forest Service approves nearly 5,000 mineral operations on the NFS. Much of the NFS (75 per cent) is open to location of mining claims pursuant to the 1872 Mining Law. And an equal amount of land is legally available for oil and gas leasing.

New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNllzarubezhgeologia, VNlloceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous- Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deep- sea drilling (leg 1-130), thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.

The Chatree Gold Project represents a greenfields discovery of metallurgically clean shallow gold mineralisation in a logistically simple terrain. Total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Resources are currently 31 tonnes of gold and 160 tonnes of silver. Gold occurs in an adularia-sericite epithermal system within quartz-calcite-adularia veins, breccias and stockworks. Host rocks are volcanic arc porphyritic latite-trachyte flows, their pyroclastic equivalents and volcaniclastics of upper Permian to upper Triassic age. The mineralisation was deposited in dilated zones during repeated reactivation of pre-existing structures. To-date five mineralised prospects have been defined by drilling with three reaching JORC Code Mineral Resources status. The project is in its definitive feasibility stage and is anticipated to be in construction during 2000.

The Bulli Coal Seam, located in the Illawarra Coalfield of New South Wales, has a long and varied history of sudden outbursts. From available information this problem has resulted in twelve fatalities over the last one hundred and one years, with over five hundred separate outburst incidents being identified. These incidents have varied in severity and intensity from the discharge of 1 to 2 tonne of coal, with a slight increase in gas emission, to the discharge of 200 to 400 tonne of coal with some 6,000 m3 of gas being liberated and large items of mining equipment being pushed 1 to 2 metres down the roadway.Geological features associated with these outbursts can be mapped on a regional and mine by mine basis, to provide some indication or warning. Similarly changes in gas content and gas composition can also be determined on a regional and mine by mine basis. However sudden geological changes (such as a 6.5 metre seam displacement within 15 metres) variations in gas content (such as 6 m3/tonne to 15 m3/tonne) and changes in gas composition (from 95% CH4 to 90% CO2) all within one mine does make the prediction or forecasting of outburst incidents exceedingly difficult.

The old Trekelano mining area is situated in the Cloncurry Gold and Mineral Field 14 km east-south-east of Duchess. It connected with the main Cloncurry-Dajarra railway line by a private line from Juenburra, a distance of 10 km. The distance by rail from Townsville is 561 km. The area was first mentioned circa 1902 - 1903 when a very short report said, that a Tony Allis had taken a parcel of copper ore out of a mine which, he called æThe InheritedÆ. After that report, nothing further was printed until about 1906, when traces of copper were noticed on a wagon track going to Kiama Well. The Trekelano deposit did not outcrop, with the cap covered by about two metres of soil. The deposit was named after an early pastoral holding. The early prospectors were however disappointed by TrekelanoÆs low copper grades, approximately five per cent Cu. This is understandable when, in those days, about 25 per cent was the cut-off grade for mines in the district. Meanwhile, The Hampden Mining and Smelting Company were constructing a smelter to treat their sulphide ores at Kuradala that was replacing their high grade oxides ore. By about 1910, the Hampden Mining and Smelting Company was experiencing smelting problems, and needed suitable oxidised copper ore to blend with the Kuradala pyritic ore. Someone must have remembered the Trekelano low-grade oxides, resulting in agreement to mine and cart the ore to Duchess, from where it was railed to Hampden, as Kuradala was known at that time.

The middle-Devonian Dulladerry Volcanics is a complex of A-type, predominantly rhyolitic ignimbrites, lavas and breccias. They form a NNW trending belt some 90 km long and 10-20 km wide, east of Parkes, NSW. The volcanics are dominated by widespread ignimbrite units with minor basalts, sediments and rarer andesites. The volcanics were deposited in a sub-aerial, possibly continental rift setting and are similar in chemistry and age to the Eden - Comerong - Yalwal Volcanic Zone (EVZ) on the NSW south coast. The volcanics exhibit an unusual Atype chemistry (high Zr, Y, Nb, REE, Ga). This distinctive composition illustrates that the volcanics are not comagmatic with the adjacent Yeoval Granite Complex or Eugowra Granite, which show typical I-type fractionation trends. Epithermal gold veins occur in basalt and andesite in the Dulladerry Volcanics at Mt Aubrey (Hopf, 1992), near Baldry. Alteration also occurs in the Glen Isla and Red Hill areas, with epithermal sinter recognised at Glen Isla. Copper and minor gold mineralisation occurs at the contact of rhyolite and andesite at Reedy Creek, but is not of epithermal origin. The analogous EVZ also contains several epithermal gold fields and it is this style of mineralisation which provides the most prospective targets in the Dulladerry Volcanics. Although the Dulladerry Volcanics also contain high background levels of REE and metals such as Zn and Pb, the general lack of fractionation and water-undersaturated character of A-type magmas does not lend itself to the development of significant concentrations of these elements into a fluid phase and mineralisation. The prospectivity of A-type volcanics in general could not be regarded as high. Over the last 15 years working in the mining, construction and extractive industries, one of the areas that has always concerned and at the same time drawn the author to it is the application of drilling and blasting in the underground development mining and civil construction tunnelling fields. In that time, the author has come across many drives and tunnels that are larger than design or badly damaged in the perimeter or both. When the question is asked as to why this is the case, the reply is generally æthatÆs the way it is and always has beenÆ. Sometimes it is blamed on bad ground, bad drilling, bad explosives, bad initiation or just plain bad. Most operators build a dilution factor into development and tunneling costs as an acceptance of overbreak and similarly pattern bolt everything to overcome excessive perimeter damage. This paper will attempt to unravel some of the mysteries behind perimeter drilling and blasting in underground drives and tunnels and discuss methods to reduce overbreak and therefore reduce costly dilution and to minimise perimeter damage which in turn will allow more cost-effective ground support. It should not be assumed that better drilling and blasting alone would automatically allow an operation to reduce ground support. The operator must still æreadÆ the ground and its characteristics in order to ensure sufficient ground support is placed to allow the operation to progress safely. This paper will not go into the intricacies of bolting, meshing, shotcreting, concreting and other ground support, but it will use indicative costs for the primary areas of drilling, explosives, excavation and labor to show the magnitude of cost-efficiencies which can be obtained through improved drilling and blasting applications. Drill and blast remains the most flexible and cost-effective method of underground excavation as long as it is applied safely and effectively.

The mineral sands deposit of Australia pose a number of unique, and quite unusual problems for the explorationist. Most concentrations of heavy minerals have been found in the unconsolidated sediments of the east and west coasts. Mineral sands mines open larger areas per tonne of concentrate than most other mines. This is because of the shallow depth of the sands containing the heavy mineral concentrations. Obtaining tenure can, by mining industry norms, be a massive operation due to the large areas to be examined and, particularly on the east coast, the large number of land holders encountered. A commercial development can still emanate from anything ranging from a small high grade body to a massive low grade deposit, the prices currently being obtained for rutile, zircon, ilmenite and monazite, although still modest when the remarkable properties and applications of these minerals are considered, is nevertheless attractive when compared to the prices being obtained for the base metals with the exception of gold. The current interest in the location and definition of new reserves of heavy minerals reflects this relative price attractiveness. The discovery of heavy mineral concentrates does not necessarily ensure the early establishment of a mine. Because of the cyclical nature of market prices, the average returns likely over the life of the mine permit the employment of only relatively simple, low cost, mining, concentration, and separation processes. If difficult mining conditions are encountered or the removal of small contaminants by complex metallurgical processes are required, then higher market prices must be obtained. Until the market is prepared to pay more for the commodities so produced, the resource will not be economic and lower cost reserves will be mined in preference. The Australian mineral sands industry has seen many closed mines because of past failures to properly assess the data base collected during the exploration and development phases of the failed projects.

A structural study of northwest Fergusson Island, part of the D'Entrecasteaux Group, was undertaken using colour and monochrome aerial photography and Landsat imagery. The resulting interpretation shows an upstanding, in part, dome-like metamorphic core complex, which is bound on three sides by an en echelon series of low-angle, thrust faults. Faceted gneissic layers occur throughout the complex. These facets are triangular in plan view and range in size from a few tens of metres, to massive composite zones which traverse the entire uplifted zone, The lower surface of each of the facets are, in fact, low-angle decollements which, during uplift, slid one upon the other to accommodate the vertical and extensional movements. As a consequence, deep structural valleys developed which widen towards the zone of maximum uplift. In many places, recognisable topographic features are replicated on both sides of these valleys, and under the stereoscope can be visually reconstructed to their original pre break-up positions. The southern margin of the core complex is less dome-like and falls away, via a series of deeply-entrenched structural valleys, towards a volcano-studded lowland. The lowland appears to belong to a rift or arm, stemming from the more southerly located Goodenough Bay Infrabasin.

Segregation of granular material is a very common phenomenon. Realised in a forced manner it is a basis of all separation processes in mineral processing, mainly classification and beneficiation. Spontaneous segregation, occurring under dynamic conditions and making possible mutual translocations of grains, is however an undesired phenomenon as a rule. It decreases the degree of blending of the material which in many cases is an important technological feature of the material. It should be noted that the segregation can be treated as the reverse phenomenon to blending. The importance and frequency of spontaneous segregation has caused many rules and technical solutions to be developed aimed at decreasing the possibility of the spontaneous segregation. However, not enough attention has been focused on an quantitative description of the phenomenon of segregation, either to ways of quantitatively evaluating segregation effects or to explanation of the influence of conditions under which the grained material exists on the occurrence of segregation and its degree. The paper presents the following topics: 1. new numerical indicator for evaluation of the segregation degree (and blending) of material contained in an arbitrary determined region is proposed; it is determined relative to the maximum possible degree of segregation of the given material when taking into account its individual properties; values of the indicator can be calculated effectively for an arbitrary material, also for ulticomponent material. 2. there is proposed a way of evaluating the state of segregation (or blending) of material in an arbitrary part of the region mentioned above, based on investigation of the gradient of distribution of the material features; algorithms of analytical procedures and calculations are presented for typical cases met in mineral processing; 3. results of initial experimental studies, both laboratory and industrial, concerning the effect of the chosen factors occurring in transport and storage of the material on its degree of segregation are presented; and 4. conclusions referring to the fundamental and practical significance of the results are also presented.

In general the iron ore industry has been slow to adopt the Whittle Pit optimising software in the evaluation of iron ore deposits. The reasons for this are two-fold:the iron ore industry has developed techniques, usually bespoke software residing in the corporate offices of the respective iron ore companies, to establish their final pit limits; and the fact that the Whittle software doesnÆt easily lend itself to estimating a sales product of constant quality without maximising grade (metal content). The Whittle software is based on the work done by Lerch and Grossman (in the early 1970s), which proposed that graph theory be used to establish an optimal surface that maximises the revenue from a deposit. The maximised surface created in the pit optimiser is translated into a proposed optimal final pit shape that can be used by the mine design engineers as a target outline to lay out the final practical pit. By treating a geological and ore resources model that was created for an iron ore deposit as a subset of the recoverable resources estimation (RRE) type of geological models, the evaluation of an iron ore deposit and establishing the final pit is greatly simplified in the Whittle 4-X optimiser. Instead of trying to optimise the iron content of the deposit, the emphasis swings to maximising the extraction of a finished and saleable iron ore product. This is achieved by treating the finished saleable iron ore as an element in the multi-element Whittle optimiser. The quality of the finished sales product is represented, and the material that cannot be used in the blended product is also shown. Proposals for enhancing the functionality in the Whittle 4-X optimiser to make the evaluation of iron (and coal) deposits easier includes the creation of a new reporting function that will allow the user to specify which field(s) can be used as the divisor(s) for the reporting of the element grades in the model.

The large, low grade, Kidston Gold Mine in North Queensland has achieved outstanding economies of scale and profitability. The total mineable ore reserve including mined to-date (as at December 1993) was 70.75 million tonnes at 1.54 grams gold per tonne. After nine years of mining, grade control mine production routinely reconciles against mill production and ore reserves to within five per cent of contained gold. The grade control system developed at Kidston is examined in detail, with emphasis on the geological thinking behind the strategies, as well as the development and application of a computerised, graphical production control and reporting system. Reconciliation procedures and results are explained, illustrating the success of geostatistical methods, as a risk management tool, in both ore reserves and production grade control.

As our mines introduce more sophisticated production technology into their operations, the dependence on communication systems is markedly increased to allow the management of the technology. However the attention given to the communication systems has lagged that given the production equipment - namely LHDs, trucks and jumbos. At times it was treated as after thought. However, this is changing as the degree of automation increases in our mines. The communication system is now being given much more priority and is genuinely becoming a part of the mine design. The transfer of information around underground, as well as between the surface and underground, is an essential day-to-day activity, with the aim being a smoothly run operation. However the mine environment is far from static, and situations arise - such as breakdowns or other incidents - that require swift analysis of the issue, its cause and its remedy. Also, as communication systems become more sophisticated their use in areas, other than direct data flow, become available. The importance of communication, its development, and new areas being impacted by communication is the subject of this Paper.
