A 3D, PC based computer program is currently under development by Blasting Analysis International, Inc., to analyze the kinetics of full scale blasts with two or more high-speed motion picture cameras. Todays common approach of utilizing only a single camera system can, in some cases, lead to great errors and erroneous conclusions when motion is assumed to be in a predefined plane of motion. CMe phrase, "What you see is what you get, it no longer true in 3D."). This is especially true in blasting environments which exhibit complex and/or predominant structural geology. The 3D system eliminates this problem, and includes automatic corrections for vertical and horizontal camera optic axis orientation, dimensional controls, lens distortion, field set-ups, projection imaging and digitized inputs. The only information required is the surveyed or known coordinates of at least six non coplanar points in the field of view. Motitn from each camera view is then digitized, transformed through a direct linear transformation, and processed with the 3D software, which also automatically time matches the data, even when the high-speed cameras are operated at different speeds. Eleven calibration constants are generated using an overdetermined system of linear equations to output the true 3D coordinates of motion in the time domain. Applications for this 3D approach are not restricted to just analyzing the kinetics of a blast. The system is sufficiently flexible to allow an accurate, quick and economical method of bench face profile analysis, generate muck pile profiles and estimate volumetric calculations. The recording systems for these applications can be common 35mm still photography and/or video equipment. It is envisioned that this system will soon replace expensive laser surveying systems at a fraction of the cost in the near future. It is also an excellent system to accurately quantify drill pattern layouts and the spatial locations of each blasthole. This information is required for generating single hole based synthetic seismograms to accurately predict the vibrational outputs of full scale blasts. In terms of litigation concerning claims resulting from blast induced ground vibrations to structures, the system is proving to be an excellent and economical method of performing pre-blast surveys where differential settlement is suspect.

Coal is a vital energy source and source of carbon for metallurgical applications, contributing significantly to the world economy. Coal mining and processing involve multiple processes that generate Respirable Coal Mine Dust (RCMD), one of the primary sources of health hazards for coal workers. Since 2000, the rate of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP) has continually increased in the U.S, with severity of the cases also worsening. Increasing evidence shows that exposure to RCMD in coal workers is a high-risk factor for lung cancer, which causes more deaths than the following three major cancers combined in the US Recent observations show an increased incidenceof CWP or other lung diseases, particularly among young miners in the Appalachian basin. The CWP prevalence in Appalachia is four times higher than the national average. Although various regulations are in place, the resurgence of such disease among coalminers demands additional efforts to better understand all the possible facets of coal dust toxicity, taking insights from current interdisciplinaryresearch efforts. One such important field is the interaction of coal dust with moisture in underground mines. Although moisture is prevalent and dynamic in an underground mining environment, it has never been evaluated for its impact on modifying the toxicity of coal dust and transport or flow behaviour. However, research conducted in atmospheric sciences in the past decade makes it clear that moisture in the atmosphere can significantly alter the behaviour of mineral dust. This paper is a part of research aimed at understanding how moisture interacts and alters the characteristics of coal dust. Such insight is crucial in understanding the potential toxicity of coal dust and developing mitigation technologies.

Zhangmatun Iron Mine is situated in the suburbs of Jinan city, Shandong, China. Because of surface environmental constraints, no suitable site can be selected to dispose of mill waste. The full mill tailings must be disposed of underground. This paper deals with the work conducted at Zhangmatun mine to develop a total tailings backfill system, taking advantage of a doubleshaft blade mixer and an activating agitator to prepare backfill. Cement and ground slag are added to tailings for strength development. Two stopes have been filled and the pillars have been effectively mined out during the field trial. The application of innovative total tailings backfill technology is a new concept at the mine. Detailed planning has achieved a close integration of mining, milling and backfilling. Full mill tailings, with or without rock, are disposed of underground in a continuous process to fill, totally and systematically, the cavities formed by mining. Utilisation of cemented tailings backfill solves not only the problem of disposal of mill waste, but also the resource problem of providing backfill materials to the mine. The strategy also maximises ore recovery for the mine.

Four historical periods of Australian lead-zinc-silver exploration and development are identified.In the first period, 1841-1900, Australia's deeply weathered surface yielded bonanza deposits. The outcrops of easily worked secondary ores, enriched in silver and lead, were discovered by prospectors with the incentive of production at times of high silver price. Districts discovered in this period still contributed, in 1982, 60 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production, mainly from Broken Hill.The second period 1901-1944, was one of strong mine development but stagnant lead-zinc-silver exploration. Mount Isa was discovered and developed, but otherwise effort was devoted mainly to the mining of deposit extensions and to the metallurgical flotation of zinc. The deposit discovery rate was low but the discovery of Mount Isa was so significant that discoveries of this period contributed, in 1982, 30 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production.The third period 1945-1972 was one of re-invigorated exploration.New geological and geophysical surveys, developing concepts of ore genesis, and worldwide comparisons of orebody settings improved target area selection. Evolving remote sensing methods, and rapid analytical techniques, assisted detection of lead-zinc deposits. Initiation of exploration led to discovery:1. in regions of previously unsuspected lead-zinc-silver potential (Sorby Hills, Mons Cupri, Golden Grove).2. of poorly exposed deposits in recognized mineral districts (Hilton, H.Y.C., Woodlawn, Elura, Que River).3. during active exploration for another commodity (Brown's, Woodcutters, Mary River, Beltana, Lady Loretla and Pegmont).The period saw a sustained growth in lead-zinc-silver production mainly from established operations. Mines discovered during the third period contributed, in 1982, 7 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production.In the fourth period from 1973 to the present, exploration initiatives became fewer but resulted in continued discovery of poorly exposed deposits at Teutonic Bore, Thalanga, Benambra, Scuddles, Hellyer, and Jillawarra. Development initiatives strengthened in the period and production commenced at Woodlawn, Teutonic Bore, Que River and Elura; pre-feasibility work commenced at Scuddles, Hilton, Lady Loretta and Thalanga.

Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary coals in the Greymouth, Ohai and Kaitangata coalfields represent a major national energy resource comprising-up to 2500 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. The three coalfields are closely related in terms of age and sedimentary and structural character. The most striking feature common to all is the complexity of the geology which has severely restricted exploration and mining of these coal resources. This complexity is manifest in the irregular lensoid nature of coal seams and by the incidence of unpredictable medium and small scale faulting and folding. There are many geological similarities between these coalfields which are considered to arise from a common origin which can be related to the plate tectonic evolution of the southwest Pacific region. In order to efficiently assess and exploit these coal resources it will be necessary to know their geology in great detail. This can he achieved by increasing the understanding of the sedimentary and structural evolution of the coal bearing basins. This knowledge may be gained by the application of traditional (ie drilling, field mapping) and innovative techniques (ie high resolution seismic, in seam seismic) with on going research-oriented studies (ie basin analysis, coal petrography).

Full aerodynamic design development of the proposed fans for the enlarged primary ventilation system at Mount Isa Mines Limited was initiated before tender specifications were prepared. Theoretical and analytical design studies were made of many possibilities to determine the optimum proposal. Major considerations were efficiency, simplicity, standardization, and mechanical feasibility. Model testing and experimental work covered blading design, inlet shape, diffuser and tail fairing dimensions, instrumentation requirements, ancl noise studies.Theoretical and predicted performance estimates were prepared for the three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans.

At the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in 1927, the Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions was formed and it was proposed that the Council take steps to prepare a "Review of the Mineral Resources and Industries of the Empire." At the third congress in 1930, it was resolved that the proposal to institute the review should be submitted to the Imperial Conference held in 1930. This was done, and the Minerals Committee, of the Imperial Economic Committee compiled, an interimreport which was based on statistics of imports and exports, and did not consider resources and consumption.In 1942 the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, wrote to the Empire Council and stated that it was desirable that the Council should be in a position to take part in decisions affecting the future of the mining and metallurgical industries. The Council communicated with the constituent Institutions regarding the nominations of two members then in England. Subsequently the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical ,Institute of India prepared a review of the mineral resources and industries of India and their post-war development, and the Empire Council forwarded a copy to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and asked if that Institute would submit a review on simjIar lines for Australia. Electronic detonator technology has been under development for the last two decades. Currently, there are a number of systems commercially available with several others still under development, each with its own unique features. This technology can offer a significant advantage to the drill and blast engineer through their ability to initiate an explosive charge at the æplannedÆ time. This new technology has created huge interest within the drill and blast community and also raised their expectations to produce better blasting outcomes. In many cases, specifications (or even expectations) of desired blast results are not properly defined. Interaction between the input variables (rock mass characteristics and blast design) and results (fragmentation, throw, damage, ground vibrations, etc) and their mechanisms, or relationship to one another, are not very well defined or understood. That is why rock blasting is still considered by many as an art rather than science. With one of the few remaining variables (cap scatter) now controllable, todayÆs blaster finally has the ability to apply science to his trade. Even though electronic detonators are available and becoming more commonly used, current field practices are not always conducive to extracting or deriving the maximum benefit from this new technology. In the authorÆs opinion, the following need to be understood to derive and sustain the maximum value: clear definition or specification(s) of desired outcomes from a given blast; impact of different features in an electronic detonator system (precision, accuracy, flexibility, reliability, etc) and their impact on the desired blasting outcomes; interaction of blast design variables (energy, energy distribution, timing, blast geometry) and their impact on desired outcomes; impact of rock mass variability and quality of blast implementation on the desired blasting outcomes; and critical need to utlilise appropriate tools and systems in order to measure and quantify benefits.In the authorÆs opinion a scientific implementation process is the key to derive the benefits. This paper analyses the industryÆs preparedness to derive the benefits from this technology and proposes a scientific methodology to understand, evaluate and sustain the value from this technology.

The 1980s witnessed a major revolution in the application of airborne geophysics to mineral exploration. The now commonplace term `high resolution aeromagnetics' (HRA) evolved from advances in survey specifications, instrumentation, data processing and imaging techniques which greatly improved the quality and geological information content of the final maps. Although initially HRA was successfully applied in `hard rock' basement terrains, eg the Archaean Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, the technique along with the radiometric and electromagnetic techniques is now gaining wide acceptance in all geological terrains including inaccessible sedimentary rock dominated mountain belts such as New Guinea for mineral and petroleum exploration. It is also being used in more and more diverse roles away from exploration, such as environmental monitoring. The main reason for this acceptance is of course the very cost-effective surface and sub-surface mapping capabilities of the various airborne techniques. Although the three main techniques (magnetic, radiometric and electromagnetic) have been in use for some time, they are continuously being improved. In June, 1986, Freeport Indonesia, Inc., in conjunction with Out- okumpu USA, laboratory tested the Flash flotation concept on Primary ball mill underflow. These laboratory results indicated a possible 10% increase in precious metal recovery and 0.6% increase in copper recov- ery were available over conventional methods. By October of the same year two Outokumpu Skim Air SK-240 units were operational on one mill circuit and were achieving 5 to 10% increased recovery in precious metals with equal copper recovery at one percent higher final concentrate grade. Two more cells were purchased and installed on the remaining grinding circuit in July, 1987. As part of the installation of the Skim Air cells, an existing cluster of six 508mm Krebs cyclones were replaced by four 660mm Krebs cyclones. To reduce high circulating loads, these new cyclones were made horizontal at 45 degrees. This arrangement succeeded in reducing the mill circulat- ing load by 100% and has allowed for a 10% increase in throughput at the same grind.

Aberdare North Colliery is situated on the eastern boundary of the City of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Although the area is now noted for its wines and vineyards, the district has a long history based on coal mining. The richest coal seam in the Cessnock district is the Greta Seam, a low ash, high volatile steaming or gas making coal. The seam, up to 10 metres thick, extends over a large area surrounding the city of Cessnock and neighbouring townships such as Bellbird, Aber- dare, Kearsley, Neath, Ellalong, Kurri Kurri and Stanford Merthyr. The Aberdare Colliery, leases, which extend under Aberdare and Cessnock townships, were first worked in 1905 and continued developing pillar panels until the mine closed on 11 Nov- ember, 1960. Coal mining to this time consisted mainly of developing pillars to the 2.4 metre parting and, in some areas, dropping the top coal to the 6 metre parting, thus leaving the pillars intact, the top 1.8 metr-es of coal be- ing left untouched due to the high sulphur content. The basic separation phenomena taking place in film concentration processes are studied through a kinetic-probabilistic approach. This approach is based on the fact that the particle velocity in the film separation phenomena is a random variable and may be defined by frequency distributions and probability laws. The approach requires: 1. development of probabilistic models for describing the behaviour of particles having different specific gravity and size along selected trajectories in the separating devices; 2. setting up an experimental procedure for determining the relevant frequency distribution curves at the exit of the separators for the particles mentioned above; 3. estimation of model parameters and model validation. In the paper, the model equations are given for the mass distribution of particles on the surface of separators, the mass distribution at the exits of shaking tables and the residence time distribution in channel type devices. The relation between residence time distribution and particle velocity distribution is derived. The test procedure has been defined and results are reported for the exit or residence time distribution in channels. A comparison between experimental and calculated frequency distributions is reported.

Mining Engineering Degree programs have traditionally had a practical emphasis and have been highly vocational in nature. However, over the years, there has been an increasing attention to the more scientific aspects of the discipline. More recently, the professional institutions, the industry and the community at large have placed increasing emphasis on the broader aspects of the professions: management, finance, humanity, environment and social issues. Notwithstanding this, there has been a continuing emphasis on the practicalities, and most Mining Engineering programs are still strongly vocational in nature. But employers of new graduates complain about the graduatesÆ lack of practicality and readiness for employment æat the sharp endÆ on the mine site.This paper briefly describes some of the more recent developments in the Mining Engineering Degree program at the University of Queensland that attempt to address the problem. Particular attention is paid to alternative learning programs, including applications of virtual reality, practical experience at the University Experimental Mine (UQEM), and the Undergraduate Site Learning Program (USLP).

A major new mine to be developed at Pike River during 2005 has been designed to have a minimal impact upon the environment, and an overall net conservation gain. The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand on the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 46 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) holds a 40 year mining permit over the coalfield.   In October 2004, the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through 1.25 km of Department of Conservation land via an access agreement, and the Environment Court issued a number of consents for the development and operation of the mine, in addition to some existing consents.   The underground mine at Pike River is located under land administered by Department of Conservation, and has been designed to avoid or mitigate adverse environmental effects and integrate into the natural bush surroundings. The mine process has been designed to operate within an environmentally sensitive area and will incorporate technologically advanced methods of mining and processing. The mine process involves hydro mining of the coal, and transportation via a 12 km coal water slurry pipeline, to a dewatering complex located on PRCC land. This will ensure that traffic in the Pike River Catchment up to the mine is minimised.   An extensive series of management plans and monitoring programmes will be used to ensure that the environmental effects of the mine activities are minimised, by evaluating the performance of managerial procedures, and physical mechanisms in place to avoid or mitigate the effects. Trial mining and substance management plans in conjunction with an orthophoto and surface monitoring protocol will ensure that surface features, and water ways are protected from any adverse effects. The Blue Duck enhancement, and pest and predator control programme will help ensure that an overall net conservation gain is achieved.   Developing transparent working relationships and good communication with Department of Conservation, Iwi (Ngati Waewae and Ngai Tahu), and local environment groups has been and remains very important in the development of this project.

Three, and possibly four, distinct types of quartz-vein associated gold mineralisation are recognised in New Zealand. They are: epithermal, schist-hosted, metagreywacke-hosted and metamorphic core complex associated types. Each has a unique geological environment and structural regime which has provided the gold source, scavenging mechanism, emplacing mechanism and geometry. Each has a characteristic suite of associated metals and trace elements. The first three types form economically important gold deposits while the fourth type have been historically worked for gold and base metals. Intense exploration is currently being focussed on all four types.The epithermal type is typified by the extensive vein systems of Martha Hill, Karangahake and Golden Cross and numerous smaller examples. The veins were deposited in a near surface active volcanic environment from deeply circulating hot water. Their structure is tensional, veins are vertical-to sub-vertical and have limited depth. Their geochemistry is identical to that in active felsic hydrothermal centres in the central North Island. Major minerals are gold, pyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and argentite.

The largest surface coal mine in North America requires complex materials handling infrastructure to fulfil the highly variable quality specifications of its contracts. These diverse demands, reflected in the arrival of numerous customer trains every day, necessitate the integration of information in every stage of production. To meet this goal, quality measurement, train line-up and mine planning processes are being integrated into local and remote control rooms. The effectiveness of such a system can only be measured by comparing decisions that are made with, and without, each of the individual integrated control systems. Traditionally, mine controllers use their experience, intuition or a variety of trial-and-error spreadsheets to determine the ideal materials handling flows needed to achieve the correct quality. These balanced decisions are complex since many factors must be considered such as the mine plan, fleet costs, quality variability and others; consequently mine controllers usually have widely varying success between crews.An evaluation model was developed to assess the impact of a decision support system (DSS) integrated in a control room for controlling the coal blending process. To this end, an ARENA-based simulator representing the whole production process can be used to pull performance and current materials handling settings directly either from the real-time systems in the mine, or from historical data. In this way, the same shift (breakdowns, cycle rates, etc) can be simulated and performance compared. Different settings of the DSS, in terms of what information is displayed and the methods for doing so, can be tested for effectiveness. The historical data are extracted directly from a corporate data warehouse, without altering the everyday working databases. At the same time, the simulator writes its results back into the same data warehouse structure, allowing the same KPI reports to be used to measure simulated shifts.

In the iron and steel manufacturing industries, efforts are being made to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and the transition from a coal-based steelmaking process to that utilising renewable energy is being pursued. An alternative process in which directly hydrogen-reduced iron is melted in an electric furnace is being investigated. It is known that foaming slag reduces heat loss from the steel bath in electric arc furnace, but iron loss due to the suspension of steel particles in the slag is indispensable. To improve the separation of steel particles from the slag, the control of the slag viscosity is important. Although the slag viscosity has been extensively studied, in those studies the slag was considered to be a simple liquid. However, in actual operations, slag is a multiphase fluid consisting of solid, gas and liquid phases. Therefore, in this study, by measuring the sedimentation velocity of titanium, stainless steel and glass spheres in an aqueous glycerin solution containing bubbles generated by the reaction between NaHCO3 and C2H2O4, the apparent viscosity of the gas-liquid fluid was evaluated based on Stoke’s law. It was found that the apparent viscosity of the gas-liquid fluid is larger than the viscosity of liquid phase and depends on both the bubble volume ratio in solution and the density of the falling solid sphere, and the apparent viscosity was different from that previously obtained by the rotation method. The apparent viscosity derived from the sedimentation velocity of solid spheres changed depending on the specific gravity of the ball. This is because the apparent viscosity is derived from the velocity of a ball falling in a static bubble in this method, whereas that is derived from the force applied by a stationary flow in the rotational method.

The Australian Broken Hill Consols Mine, situated some 600 yd east of the main Broken Hill line of lode, is noted for its rich ores of silver. In contrast to the vast conformable orebodies of the Broken Hill field, the Consols lode occupies a narrow fissure dipping to the south west at angles increasing from 240 through to vertical and transgressing the strike of the metamorphosed country rock at an oblique angle. This feature, together with the abundance of calcite and siderite and the virtual absence of silicate minerals in the gangue, has led to its classification as an orebody of the Thackeringa type (King, 1953). Recorded production during the period 1890 to 1903 is given as 845,000 oz of silver and 20 tons of lead.The unusually rich silver values of the Consols lode were concentrated at the intersection of the fissure with beds of amphibolite, whereas in the adjacent schists and gneisses the lode became markedly impoverished. From the surface to a depth of some 120 ft extensive surface oxidation had occurred, resulting in the breakdown of siderite and its replacement by limonite and associated manganese oxides.Silver halides, dyscrasite, acanthite and partly oxidised tetrahedrite were the main silver minerals in this zone. With increasing depth the lode material gradually reverted to minerals representative of the hypogene zone.The only previous work specifically on the mineralogy of the Consols lode is that by Smith (1922), one time manager of the mine. A large hard rock rib pillar was recently preconditioned at Mt Charlotte mine using a novel blasting technique. The motivation for trialling this procedure was a history of past pillar failures, with associated seismicity. Design studies had shown that a new proposed pillar would be at risk of violent failure, and preconditioning was used in an attempt to reduce this risk. Preconditioning by blasting involves physically modifying a selected zone of ground in advance of mining, then forming the pillar so that it incorporates that zone of ground. The modified rock in the zone is intended to allow extra closure (yield) of the pillar in response to mining-induced stress changes. The ground modification was done by tight firing a blasthole array to fracture the rock. The blast design comprised pairs of pre-split blastholes to create a series of short cracks across the target zone, followed by main blastholes to fracture the rockmass between each pair of cracks. A monitoring program was used to establish whether or not the preconditioning was effective. It included conventional extensometers, stress change cells and closure stations, plus a seismic monitoring system. To-date, stoping is complete on one side of the pillar and has just commenced on the other. Results show significant movements within the preconditioned zone and on geological structures in the pillar, as well as lower stress in the pillar compared to an adjacent non-preconditioned site. The preconditioning technique can be applied elsewhere, provided its purpose, mechanism and side effects are understood. Benefits are likely to include more assured production, and successful pillar recovery even in high stress situations.

The bureaucracy in Victoria has worked against exploration and mining development. There is no doubt that the new Mineral Resources development Act has simplified matters on the mining side of the system. However, WMC's Bendigo and Deep Lead experiences demonstrate that other parts of the bureaucracy can cause serious delays. The mining industry continues to view the approval process causal of excessive costs and delays compared with other States (and countries) and prohibitive to investment in Victoria.
