Armstrong's (1983) criticisms of PhiIip and Watson's (1982b) note on optimal drilling patterns are based on misinterpretation, supported by errors in geometry. Furthermore, Armstrong argues conceptually from the perspective of Matheronian geostatistics, as does also Rudenno (1983a, b). Thus, both authors embrace a global, probabiIistic method of assessing spatial data sets, an approach that must be contrasted strongly with local, deterministic interpolation methods. Some of the important assumptions of geostatistics are outlined and the non-unique nature of the method discussed. A probabilistic approach can be judged appropriate when exploration data are erratic, or known to be unreliable, or when extrapolation is desired. Where data are treated as exact, kriging can give the most biased result if tested against other interpolation methods. We reiterate our previous conclusion that the equilateral triangular grid is approximately 30 per cent more efficient (in terms of numbers of drill holes) compared with a square grid for the same maximum interpolation distance. This is simply due to the improved isotropy of sampling. New, locally-based, deterministic methods for computing ore reserves seem to be required.

Research and Technical Services, Department of Mines Western Australia The nine papers received for this technical session cover a very wide range of hydrological problems in various parts of the world. Three of these papers deal with hydrological predictions for new mines, while three are concerned with the prediction of water chemistry. The three remaining papers deal with gas injection as a dewatering tool, discharge formulae verification and the use of a physical model to predict subsurface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining. Hydrological problems in mine planning represent a major risk in many mining operations, booth as a potential life or equipment hazard and a major financial risk. The initial paper selected to review was therefore one by the president of a gold mining company, rather than by one of the specialist scientists, to remind us all that the main reason problems are faced and overcome in the mining industry is usually a commercial one. "This study investigates the dual function of a temperature responsive anionic co-polymer of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) as a selective flocculant/flotation collector. PNIPAM is used for separating hematite from 50:50 mixtures of hematite and quartz, at a variety of particle sizes. The performance of PNIPAM in this system is compared to that of conventional flotation collectors: sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The results of the study demonstrate that anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C (above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)) is the most effective flotation collector for hematite particles in the size range between 10 and 20 ¦m. This is attributed to the increased probability of both particle/bubble collision and particle/bubble attachment through the formation of hydrophobic hematite aggregates. Anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C also produced the highest hematite recoveries for very fine hematite particles (circa 1 ¦m). However this recovery was completely unselective. This lack of selectivity is partially attributed to the activation of quartz particles by PNIPAM, but is thought to mainly occur as a result of entrapment of quartz particles within the matrix of hematite aggregates.CITATION:Forbes, E and Franks, G V, 2013. At the beginning of this year it was my pleasure and responsibility to take over the Presidency of our Institute from Mr A. A. Parish who, as did his predecessors, filled the office with distinction. It is a great privilege to address you as President and it is an occasion for my wife and family, and I am most grateful for your inviting them to the buffet dinner. Our Secretary (Miss Jacka), who processes all Presidents, has told me that there are neither questions nor discussions on Presidential Addresses, and that being so, I felt free to select a controversial topic. In late 1987 it was recognised that column flotation might have potential for improving the grade of the zinc concentrate produced at Pasminco's South Mine in Broken Hill. Intermittent test work was carried out during 1988 using a 90 mm diameter by 6 m high perspex column, built and initially operated by staff from CRA Advanced Technical Development. This column was found to have insufficient retention time so, during the first half of 1989, Pasminco constructed and installed a 200 mm diameter unit of the same height. Extensive testwork was carried out using this column during the latter half of 1989 and early 1990. It was clear from the results that a grade improvement of between 1 and 2 per cent (absolute) would be achievable. The effect of column cleaning on overall recovery was not established with the same degree of confidence, so the proposed new circuit is to include one of the existing banks of OK8 cleaner cells as a scavenger on column tailings. The test work provided sufficient data for preliminary design work to begin in May 1990 and commissioning of full scale zinc cleaner columns is planned for mid 1991. This paper summarizes the results and describes some of the experiences with column flotation at the Pasminco South Mine.

The appearance of the Cornish miner in South Australia was, in the simplest terms, the result of resource development economics. In Cornwall in the middle of the 19th century tin and copper mining was declining, while in the new colony of South Australia copper mining was booming. Experienced hard rock miners in Cornwall there- fore escaped unemployment at home by accepting an assisted passage to South Australia. There, in a colony where they were needed, they made their skills available and received good wages. There are many testimonies which support this simple thesis. Take for example the following extracts from contemporary newspapers in Corn- wall: Persons of small capital will find this an excellent opportunity for emigrating to the young and thriving colony ... The miner will find a rich and unbroken field for his operations. The Colony abounds with minerals... (West Briton, 19 July 1844) Miners make a great deal of money here (South Australia). All of them earn ú2 to ú3 per week and in many cases when they have a portion of the mine on tribute one person has cleared ú100 in a couple of months or so. (Cornwall Royal Gazette, 21 July 1848)

In late 2004 a large-scale evaluation of a new suite of tools for semi-automated core logging was carried out in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. Known as HyLoggingÖ Systems, these combine rapid hyperspectral mapping of mineralogy and very high resolution digital imaging of cores and chips in their original containers. The resulting data is very information-rich and provides information about host rock, alteration and regolith mineralogy. This, in turn, can be used to test geological models about fluid/rock interactions, ore system architecture, ore feed characterisation and generally improve the objectivity of the normally manual and variable logging process. Results were obtained from the Kanowna Belle and St Ives gold deposits in the Kalgoorlie region, as well as numerous holes from across Western Australia stored in the Kalgoorlie Core Library. At the Kanowna Belle gold deposit critical spatial trends in the proportions of white mica, the chemistry and species of those micas, the presence of selected carbonate species and the absence of chlorite proximal to ore zones have all contributed to improved ore deposit understanding. Significantly many of these trends are not discernible to the naked eye, nor easily quantified, previously, across many thousands of metres of core from separate drill holes. At St Ives, the HyLoggerÖ was able to show that low-Al (phengite) and high-Al (paragonite to muscovite) white micas are spatially associated with D3 foliation zones that are proximal and distal to Au mineralisation, respectively. D3 foliation zones are also associated with the depletion of metamorphic chlorite and amphibole, and their replacement with biotite, relative to unaltered mafic host-rocks. The HyLogged GSWA drill holes yielded mineralogical characterisation of classic deposits, including Kambalda (Ni), Fimiston (Au), Teutonic Bore (Cu, Zn, Ag), Black Swan (Ni) and Hannans (Au), illustrating a wide variety of mineralogical trends due to both host lithologies, previously unrecorded lithological subdivisions, and alteration patterns. During 2005 a unique thermal infrared HyLogger was developed to map the important remaining silicates, such as feldspars, quartz, olivines, pyroxenes and garnets. This was successfully tested on a 9000 m subset of the same cores as the earlier study. Interpretation has focused, in particular, on silicification, albitisation, and the mineralogy of several high-grade, less hydrous deposits.

In the period since 1989 the Yabulu Nickel Refinery of Queensland Nickel has undergone a transformation both in terms of the nickel laterite ore feed and the refined nickel product. These two changes were mutually supporting, as will be shown in the following paper. It had been realised since the early-1980s that the Greenvale orebody would be exhausted by 1992. Consequently planning had been in progress throughout the 1980s for the importation of overseas ore as a replacement for the Greenvale ore. The existence of extensive lateritic ore deposits in New Caledonia and Indonesia made these locations the natural focus of attention. With the three Japanese ferronickel smelters sourcing their nickel garnierite ore feed from these locations it was relatively easy for the miners to supply the overlying limonite ore to Yabulu. This limonite ore was previously discarded as waste. The Yabulu refinery now receives about 85 per cent of its ore from these two overseas sources. The transition from Greenvale ore to imported ore occurred gradually between 1989 and 1993. It was during the ore importation planning stage of the mid 1980s that Queensland Nickel commenced the technical investigation which led to the ammoniacal solvent extraction (ASX) plant installation and the product change from nickel oxide to nickel metal.

Competitive commercial circumstances internationally provide a prime impetus for miners to seek new technologies as a means to profitability and survival. Engineering and project management activities play a vital role in establishing, operating and developing the capital facilities used by miners. Computer based technologies are the single most important technology for maintain- ing competitiveness in engineering and project management into the future. Current applications of computers in engineering design and drafting are finding economic applications, computer-aids are more readily introduced, accepted and profitable. Computing technology is advancing very rapidly and on a broad front in hardware, software and communications. This technology advance is improving the ability of engineers and project managers to provide a high quality, responsive and low cost service which will improve in parallel with computer technology. As this technology advances, a key challenge is created for managers in selecting hardware and software, in developing people and organisations and in marketing the technology to advantage. While the future holds many exciting developments, people will still hold the key roles. While the nature of their roles may change, the final acceptance or rejection of technology will be by people, whether as users or owners, who will judge on the basis of whether their stake is improved or not.

In contrast with previously published models for the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process, the model proposed in this paper incorporates film transfer, intraparticle diffusion, simultaneous leaching, preg-robbing, the loading of multicomponent species, and the effects of fouling and changing cyanide levels. The rationale behind this comprehensive model is that changes in fouling and competitive adsorption along a CIP cascade affect the profiles of gold loading. As it is impossible to quantify all these non-ideal factors, a method is proposed whereby an imaginary species is postulated so as to combine all the competitive effects. A plant survey at the Telfer mine has shown that the mass loss due to a gravimetric analysis of the fouled carbon could be used directly to quantify this competitive effect. The degradation and consumption of cyanide along the Telfer CIP cascade enhance the loading of copper on to the carbon, which should be taken into account when modelling the gold profiles. It appeared that the effect of cyanide itself on the loading of gold was negligible compared with its effect on the copper. Evidently much more research is required on this topic in order to optimise CIP operations exposed to constantly changing conditions.

As a prelude to studying the sorption desorption and permeability behaviour of coal cores in a triaxial stressing rig using sorb- able gases, the air permeability of typical cores was measured. Lump coal samples were obtained from three gas-troubled collieries in Queensland and New South Wales. These were cored in the laboratory and a simple laboratory permeameter employed which accepted 38 x 40 mm cores in a thick rubber sheath. Air pressure of 500 kPa was applied outside the sheath to provide suitable sealing between the rubber and the coal. Differential driving pressures up to 100 kPa were employed and the air flow measured by displacement of water columns in inverted graduated cylinders. Flow measurements accurate to + 2% could thereby be achieved. Coal lumps were cored both parallel and perpen- dicular to the bedding plane, and were observed prior to measurement for any notable features, in particular for the presence of fissures. Between samples an overall variation of from 100 milliDarcy was found in Appin, Westcliff and Leichhardt coals. Mining companies are striving to achieve new levels of operational maturity and drive process improvement across the organisation in the face of unprecedented demand and limited supply of experienced human resources. Advanced analytics techniques can help overcome these fundamental challenges by applying data techniques not previously applied in mining. Today, decisions are usually locally optimised but do not achieve optimum capability for the value chain. Although more information is collected then ever before, it is difficult to link many sources of data together in the same place in real-time, for example plant history, maintenance, mine planning, logistics and engineering data. Consequently complex analysis of data is time consuming and requires specialist skills and knowledge, and is often neglected in the decision-making process. In the future, analytics will close the loop between analysing data and taking action. Analytics will become embedded in the business and routinely applied to improve decision making across the organisation, from senior management to operations and maintenance workers, but will not require specialist skills or be time consuming to analyse data. As analytics becomes embedded in the business process, decisions are supported by data (not on gut feel), and critically, data from many sources are integrated in real-time to improve the quality of decisions. Ultimately, predictive tools will help suggest, or even in some cases automate, courses of action. The main opportunities for analytics exist where the enterprise requires supporting technology to enable it to continue to evolve to higher level of maturity. This will be in the areas of asset management, rapid reconciliation and adaptive planning, and the inbound and outbound supply chains. Advanced analytics are also a key enabler for increasing the effectiveness and realising the true value of Remote Operations Centres to safely and efficiently support operations in remote locations with smaller workforces.

The Savage River open cut magnetite mine is located in rugged terrain in densely rain forested northwest Tasmania. The mine and concentrating plant are both in the Savage River valley. Pickand Mather Incorporated (PMI) operated Savage River as an open cut magnetite mine between 1966 and 1996. Acid rock drainage (ARD) was first noted in the last ten years of the operation, leading to elevated concentrations of heavy metals downstream of the mine. When operations ceased in 1996, PMI returned the mine to the Tasmanian Government along with a remediation fund of $11.4 million. At that time, the assessed cost of remediation was in excess of $120 million. As a result of the ongoing ARD contamination and to facilitate both a new operation and effective remediation, Goldamere Pty Ltd negotiated an agreement with the Tasmanian Government in 1996, which resulted in the Goldamere Act and the Goldamere Agreement. The agreement has allowed Australian Bulk Minerals (ABM) to remediate the Savage River mine in conjunction with the Tasmanian Government while re-invigorating a previously closed mine by providing ABM with an indemnity against past pollution. ABM can configure its mine and waste planning activities to maximise remediation benefits without fear of future litigation for past mistakes. The effect to date has been the development of a long-term strategy to remediate the Savage River and short-term remediation works such as water management, which provide benefits to the ecosystem. After five years, the Savage River is no longer significantly impacted by ARD for 30 kilometres downstream and trout are now reported within the reaches of the mining lease. The arrangements between ABM and the Tasmanian Government are an example of a genuine WIN WIN situation where co-operative environmental management of the site results in significant improvements and where the æregulatorÆ and the æminerÆ are working together to achieve mutually beneficial goals. The end result is a significant benefit to Tasmania.

Management requires up-to-date information on the activities of an enterprise in order to maintain control and to assist in decision-making and planning. In today's environment it is essential that this information is immediately available and in an easily assimilated format. If this is not the case, management is forced to make decisions based on intuition and past experience. At Mt Newman Mining Co, a computer application has been developed and implemented with the objective of providing this type of information to management. The Key Parameter Reporting System (as the application is known) allows for daily (constant) on-line capture of selected production statistics, safety statistics and free format textual comments relating to topics such as industrial relations, major maintenance and other pertinent news. Information can be retrieved,'and displayed or printed in either a tabular or graphical format. All senior managers have colour visual display units in their offices for immediate access to the system. Access to selected sensitive information is controlled. All company staff are able to retrieve unsecured information from the system via visual display units installed in all company Locations.

Traditional mechanised resin rock bolting in hard rock underground mines requires the installation of resin capsules into a pre-drilled hole prior to the rock bolt being spun into a hole to mix the resin and set the bolt in place. In poor rockmass conditions, especially at depth or in highly altered faults and shears, the condition of the holes often deteriorates as the poor ground around it unravels and falls into the hole. This results in partially or fully blocked holes that either damages the resin capsule when they are being inserted into the holes or prevent it entirely until the hole is continuously cleaned of debris. This deterioration of the hole condition, and continuous need to clean and re-drill holes, also increases the diameter of the hole which in turn affects the continuously mechanically coupled anchorage mechanism of the rock bolt to the rockmass as there is simply not enough resin in the hole to fill the annulus between the bolt and the rock. This results in a large increase to critical heading cycle time and, more importantly, results in the rock reinforcement not performing as per design specification and increases the risk of instability. To overcome the quality control issues with resin bolt installation in poor ground, a single pass drill, install, inject and tension self-drilling resin bolt application was designed and implemented for use in such conditions. This system allows the operator to inject a two part polyester resin through a self-drilled hollow bolt to mix and fully encapsulate the rock reinforcement. The self-drilling bolt allows for post injection of the hole after the bolt has been installed into the rock and gives the operator manual or automated control on the amount of resin used in the hole to ensure complete encapsulation and continuously mechanically coupled anchorage to the rock. This allows the reinforcement to work as designed and provide the Geotechnical Engineer extra quality control confidence in these conditions. The implementation of this single pass resin bolting system resulted in significant decreases to the resin bolting cycle time and rock bolt quality control failures. In this paper the design, implementation and embedment into the development cycle will be discussed and the in situ quality control checks used to validate the increase in rock bolt installation quality will be shared. Fatalities that occurred because of rock falls in off-reef excavations (excluding shafts) over the last three years range between ten per cent and 20 per cent of the total number of fatalities that have occurred due to rock falls in the South African mining industry. These rock falls, mostly exacerbated by blasting practices, occur because of failure on discontinuities within the rock mass. Among other reasons of their occurrence is insufficient support installation or the incorrect assessment of rock mass conditions. This report presents qualitative analysis intended to outline rock stability conditions in tunnels subjected to dynamic loading. Seismic waves including those created by firing an explosive charge in tunnel rocks are considered. The rock behaviour is monitored using geophones and extensometers variably installed to record the near and far effects of roof bolt support units on a dynamically loaded rock. The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources objective is to use data and information to undertake a detailed analysis of incidents and accidents to identify risks so that the predictable can be foreseen and avoided. The Department of Mineral Resources has established a computerised database called COMET (COmmon Mines EnvironmenT) to capture information on accidents incidents, inspections, audits and accreditation in improving safety and environment performance. This data together with data from Coal Mines Insurance and WorkCover NSW is being used to provide trend and comparison information. The NSW Injury Risk Management Research Centre at the University of NSW has been engaged by the Department to collate and prepare a detailed analysis of the data. Through this process, five areas have been identified for further research. These being: electrical energy, mechanical equipment, work environment, hours of work, and contractors involvement accident and incidents. The paper covers: the establishment of a mix of performance measures for the industry to indicate whether the safety performance is improving; the provision of data to provide useful comparisons and benchmarks against which companies can compare performance; the development of positive performance measures; the findings and outcomes of the detailed analysis of electrical energy; shocks; the provision of information to industry; an outline how the data is being used to determine departmental; operational priorities; and future plans to undertake research into the other areas identified.

Ideal iron ore sinter is produced by optimising the balance between coarse (+2 mm), stable ore nuclei and a reactive matrix consisting largely of fluxed -1 mm fines. The authors have previously published work evaluating the matrix melting behaviour of a number of fine ores, using techniques developed by CSIRO. The focus of that work was to demonstrate the contribution of the matrix to overall sinter quality, with the results showing a direct correlation between melting point, matrix porosity and strength. CSIRO has also developed a complementary test to study the behaviour of coarse ore nucleus particles in contact with the sinter matrix and provide an evaluation of their reaction and assimilation properties. This test provides valuable fundamental information that can be used to better understand the role of specific ore types and optimise blend composition.The CSIRO laboratory-scale assimilation test is carried out by embedding particles of ores of specific sizes into a fluxed matrix of known sinter blend composition, using real ores and fluxes, in a laboratory test that directly relates to pot-grate and plant sintering conditions. Samples are fired under controlled conditions in a tube furnace using a standard heating profile and a constant, low-oxygen potential atmosphere. These conditions simulate the actual sintering process while removing the effects of the many locally-variable parameters (eg temperature, oxidation potential and localised chemistry) that exist in the actual process, meaning that trends in behaviour can be more clearly seen. Designed as a compromise between the industry-standard pot-grate sintering test and a more fundamental test using chemical reagents, the aim is to isolate and evaluate the nucleus behaviour of an individual blend component to allow an improved understanding of the role that an individual ore plays in a specific blend. Measured cross-sections of the resulting fired samples provide a semi-quantitative measure of reactivity, while accompanying photomicrographs allow a qualitative assessment of assimilation properties (eg volume and distribution of secondary porosity generated during reaction).In this paper, to complement the previous work published on melting behaviour, nucleus particles were selected from hematite, hematite-goethite and goethite ores and embedded in a simulated plant sinter matrix. Drilled core particles of two sizes were tested at fixed temperatures simulating low- (<1300°C) and high-temperature (>1300°C) sintering conditions. The resulting assimilation properties are compared and discussed as a function of particle size, temperature and ore/sinter mineralogy. The Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF). The northern portion of the KMF hosts high-grade manganese referred to as Wessels’ type ore and is mined mostly from underground operations. WorleyParsons TWP is currently involved with the development of a ventilation shaft for one of these mines. The main challenge is to develop through the unconsolidated Kalahari material and weathered portion of the Karoo formation. These formations are preserved very erratically over short distances. A lack of understanding of the unique challenges presented for developing shafts in this area has resulted in the failed development of a shaft on an adjacent property and over-expended budgets on others.The renowned red sand of the Kalahari forms the top several tens of metres and overlies a horizon of gravels and calcrete that pose seasonally variable water ingress problems. A very stiff red clay horizon is then intersected. The Red Clay is prone to swellling during excavation and has been the main stumbling block on previous constructions. The standard approach has been to develop non-stop through this layer. The red clay is underlain by another horizon of calcrete, gravel and conglomerate that marks the bottom of the formation. The top of the Dwyka Tillite (Karoo Formation) is usually highly weathered and has a distinctive yellow colour. The weathered tillite is highly susceptible to drying and becomes friable. At reef-intersection, the combination of subhorizontal bedding and joints with the dominant subvertical faulting results in potential wedge failures in the manganese and ironstone units.This paper describes the geotechnical issues identified during the planning of the ventilation shaft and the risks associated with development through the Kalahari and weathered Karoo Formations. One of the major changes in the resource industry in the nineties has been the re-internationalisation of the industry. The history of the resource business has been one of companies from the developed world utilising the cash flows from their operations to explore and develop mines in less developed regions of the world. This resource development has progressively generated wealth and economic development, which in turn, has led to a new generation of exploration and mining projects. In South America, Chile had led the way in a mining resurgence, now closely followed by Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Peru. Although Chile has long had a significant copper mining industry, the pre-nationalisation phase was driven by American capital; the current phase has been spearheaded by R.T.Z. - B.H.P. at Escondida with Canadian junior companies, in particular, providing major speculative impetus. The Australian junior companies have not been significant in South America.
