The application of cheap robust microprocessor based units to achieve monitoring and control in an underground mining environment is described. The functional layout of the programmable controller and the methods of multiplexing and processing information from local and remote sources are examined as are features for refrigeration plant control.High noise immunity communication to a remote micro computer uses existing telephone lines and enables display and print of essential data. The development of this system then leads to applications in monitoring compressed air, ore transport and underground fires.In conclusion, the problems of data presentation to different levels of management and the future philosophy of a central multi-reporting system are discussed.

A consistent and reliable international approach to public reporting of a mining companyÆs main assets, its Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves, has become of increasing importance in recent years with the rapid globalisation of the mining industry. Through the efforts of the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), a committee representing national resource/reserve reporting committees in Australia, South Africa, UK/Ireland/Western Europe, Canada, USA and Chile, the reporting standards in most æwesternÆ countries use almost identical resource and reserve definitions and are generally around 90 - 95 per cent compatible. New codes based on the CRIRSCO model are being developed or considered in other countries, including Peru and the Philippines. This unified approach has provided the mining industry, regulators and investors with a common framework to report and interpret mineral resource and reserve estimates, thereby facilitating funding to the mining industry through improved investor understanding and confidence. The common reporting standards are reflected in the CRIRSCO International Template, available on CRIRSCOÆs web site, a document that is kept æliveÆ by reflecting the best of the most recently published CRIRSCO-type national standards. In a significant exception to this unified industry approach, the USA Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires adherence to its own standard, only partly compatible with CRIRSCO-type standards, with adverse and costly implications for companies listed in the USA. A major industry submission was presented to SEC in April 2005 which, if accepted, would bring about considerable compatibility of CRIRSCO and SEC standards. The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) has, since 1992, been developing its Framework Classification (UNFC) as a single global system for harmonising all existing national and international resource/reserve reporting systems, covering both government and industry requirements and both the hydrocarbon and solid minerals sectors. While few mining companies report their resources and reserves using the UNFC, the system is accepted or is being examined as a basis for reporting by some governments, including those of Russia, China and India. The UN-ECE agreed in 1999 to incorporate CRIRSCO definitions into the UNFC for those categories of resources and reserves used for market-related reporting, but a more recent edition of the UNFC removed or changed the definitions, requiring re-engagement by CRIRSCO to ensure compatibility. Since 2005, CRIRSCO and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) have been involved in discussions with the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), which plans to develop a new Accounting Standard for the Extractive Industries as part of its International Financial Reporting Standards. At the request of the IASB, CRIRSCO and SPE have been examining any potential for convergence of resource/reserve definitions between the mining and hydrocarbon industries. Each of these systems is described in this paper and high level comparisons made.

The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) has been successfully using mini computers in its open cut strip and pit coal planning for the past six years. A recent development within the computerised Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) provides the facility for the generation, evaluation, and simulation of colliery workings.Existing computer programs for collieries were studied, but none met the requirements of BHP's underground mine planners.Consequently, it was decided to develop programs, based on those existing within BHP for open cut strip and open cut pit mine planning. The new planning facility was designed to enable any number of proposed colliery developments and operating plans to be evaluated against optimistic, most likely and pessimistic geological lease area interpretations.In mine planning, sensitivity studies should be conducted to determine the likely effects on production, development costs and colliery economics of changes in mine design and budgeted equipment productivity. By automating the manual calculations involved, the computer programs provide the ability to conduct numerous and extensive sensitivity studies. Hence an optimum mine design for budgeting purposes can be derived quickly with an improved degree of confidence in the long term viability of the proposed development.

GHD-Black & Veatch (GHD-BV) have completed design and specification of the ash thickening plant at Tarong Power Station, including operation of a pilot plant. Construction of the plant is in progress and commissioning is planned for early-2004. The objective of the new plant is to convert the low concentration (lean phase) ash slurry currently generated by the power station into concentrated slurry which will then be pumped to the existing ash dam. Water recovered from the lean slurry will be returned to the power station for reuse. The drivers behind this project are to extend the life of the ash dam and to reduce water pumping costs. A maximum flow of 1000 litres per second is expected in the thickening plant. The process involves a screening phase, which removes large material that could cause blockages or equipment damage. A 50 metre diameter thickener then concentrates the screened lean ash slurry to 55 - 60 per cent w/w solids. In addition, the thickener plant will allow the harvesting of floating cenospheres (hollow, spherical ash particles) from the lean slurry. Cenospheres are currently collected from the surface of the ash dam and drained on a pad adjacent to the dam. The new system will use a surface skimmer to remove the cenospheres from the thickener and transfer them to settling ponds for further classification. The settling ponds simulate the detention on the existing ash dam, and allow entrained fine ash and slow settling cenospheres time to settle. As settling occurs in ponds, the slow settling cenospheres can be completely recovered whereas when they settle in the dam, the opportunity for recovery is lost. Cenospheres are a valuable by-product produced during the combustion process, and recycling of this material reduces the waste generated by the power station. Water recovered from the thickener drains to a three megalitre reservoir. Water is drawn from the reservoir for thickener plant service water and various other uses in the power station. The bulk of the water is used to sluice ash from the power station to the thickening plant. In the current configuration, surface water from the ash dam is reused but must be pumped several kilometres back up to the power station. The dam also holds an inventory of several thousand megalitres of water and has significant evaporative losses. Therefore the current raw water make up demand is substantial. In addition, some areas of the power station traditionally using raw water will be modified as part of this project to allow the use of recovered water, further reducing the raw water demand. The design incorporates many features of sustainable water management. By more effectively recovering water from the lean ash slurry, the amount of raw water make up required by the system will be significantly reduced. This method of water recovery provides a more sustainable and energy efficient ash-transport mechanism.

In both the U.S.A. and Canada regulations concerning the reporting on mineral resources and especially ore reserves have been established. The regulations are virtually identical for the two countries with the main exceptions being who is franchised to write the report and how the various reserve categories may be used in reports to the public. Both countries divide ore reserves into "proven", "probable" and "inferred" categories. "Proven" reserves are those for material for which tonnage is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, underground workings or drill holes and for which the grade is composed from the results of adequate sampling. "Probable" reserves are those which are less well defined than "proven" while "inferred" reserves are generally those which may exist through geological and geophysical interpretation. The AusIMM/AMIC draft guidelines as proposed for use in Australia define more rigidly the ore reserve categories into "proved" and "probable" terms, which can only be applied following a full and favourable analysis of economic, mining, metallurgical, marketing and sociopolitical factors. If the ore reserves are not supported by this analysis they are placed into a "resource" category. Proper application of this proposed Australian model could prove useful when dealing with grass-root prospects or mining properties in the pre-feasibility stage. Combined with competent reporting, use of the proposed guidelines should ensure standardised and more verifiable analysis/valuation of a company's mineral assets.

Developing and operating mines in developing countries is never dull, but continuously challenging in terms of geology and terrain, geography and location, culture and land tenure, environmental and social issues, fiscal regimes and in some cases political risk. In addition, the rapidly changing nature of the communities with little understanding of the nature of mining at the community level requires us to continually manage issues affecting project development and mine operations with greater sensitivity. In frontier regions, people skills can become more essential than technical skills, particularly in dealing with indigenous people. Hence, managing a mining project requires a huge relationship effort.Effective communication with communities of different cultural background and proactive management of issues influencing community aspirations and desires requires not only new skills but also creativity with new concepts on how to deal with social issues under a different cultural context. The involvement of government agencies and NGOs is an important ingredient to creating understanding and collaborative approaches to common social issues. Maintaining stakeholder relationships pays in the long-run and is a useful exercise in getting information feedback from the wider community.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides an internationally standardised framework for estimating the environmental impacts associated with products or services (International Organisation for Standardisation, 2006). A particular strength of LCA is the ability to consider indirect impacts that occur at different stages of a product’s life (eg raw material acquisition, manufacture, use, disposal or recycling) and through its supply chain (Figure 1). A wide variety of impact categories are able to be considered by LCA, such as the potential contribution to global warming, ozone depletion, marine eco-toxicity or freshwater eutrophication.CSIRO has a long history of using LCA to compare the environmental impacts associated with alternative mining, mineral processing and metal production technologies (Haque and Norgate, 2014; Norgate and Haque, 2012, 2013). Mineral processing is at the hub of the exploration-mining-metals production system. Because of the large volumes of material processed, incremental technology investments can pay off better than for other parts of the system. However, much of mineral processing remains a 'black art', because we are behind in investing in modem technologies. Consequently, we have one of the best opportunities to improve efficiency and competitiveness through the application and transfer of technologies that have already been developed for other industries. The reluctance of minerals companies to place priority in our area is not because we lack new ideas; our senior management has not been convinced, based on our previous results, that such investments will pay off as well as other investment opportunities competing for the same resources. The key is the proper establishment of technology strategy and more effective transfer of technology. The presentation will identify the failure mechanisms of technology transfer and will present a model for improving the success rate, a prerequisite for raising the priority of mineral processing investment. Topics emphasised include strategy formulation, human resources planning, and total quality management principles applied to improving technology transfer.

Computer software has been developed to link real-time information generated by underground mine ventilation airflow monitoring sensors into a network simulation program to undertake network simulations and allow interpretation of key system data and operational changes. Results were used in the development of a computerised monitoring and simulation system to provide immediate or real-time data on air behaviour within each branch of an underground mine ventilation network through linking of sensors to the ventilation network simulation software. The outcome of the project is an online system that can report changes in the mine ventilation system, allow causes of changes to be isolated and rectified, improve balancing of available air throughout the mine, allow improved approaches to regulator setting and dispense with much of the labour used for underground ventilation measurement. The work activities in both coal and metalliferous Australian mines have involved examination and modelling of regulators, software modification and considerable mine site testing and optimising activities. There is some discussion on approaches to control of flow through ventilation systems with increased information. New systems will be part of a total mine information management system. They will have to be cost effective and justified by gains in productivity. New systems will need to provide simulation of contaminant production such as diesels, vehicle heat, strata heat, radiation, blast fumes and other gases. More robust real-time ventilation simulation systems will be required. Personnel and vehicle identification and production tracking will be collected to provide integrated ventilation system monitoring and control. This paper examines a study to gain greater understanding of computerised real-time airflow monitoring and control within the mine production system to provide immediate simulated information in each branch of an underground ventilation network and to allow interpretation of key system data and operational changes. A case study implementing a real-time airflow monitoring and control is discussed. Approaches to control of flow through ventilation systems with increased information are discussed. The concept of a system that can be linked to or be part of a total mine information management system is developed. Such a system can form the base for mine automation that allows mines to incrementally and cost effectively implement monitoring and control to further seek gains in productivity.

The heavy sulfide zone (HSZ) of the Grasberg deposit has the geometry of a funnel and is located at the contact of the mineralised intrusive and the relatively barren sedimentary rock types. The geometry and the rock properties associated with the HSZ plays a significant role in pushback design and sequencing. Most of the HSZ has relatively low strengths which must be considered in slope design and management. This paper presents the open pit mine geotechnical and planning design considerations associated with the HSZ.

An electron probe micro-analyser, controlled by a dedicated mini-computer,has been operating at Imperial College since 1970. The data assessment capability of the computer was limited and, in order to make better use of the information produced by the analyser, extra computing facilities were needed. Following the initiation of a Laboratory Automation Project at Imperial College involving the use of a central computer linked to laboratory type computers and to further more powerful systems,it became possible to carry out much more detailed and extensive mineralogical analyses by connecting the mini -computer to the Laboratory Automation Network. The paper describes the techniques employed including hardware, software, inter- connection, analysis and operating methods.

A new portal and access drift was constructed by Concrete Constructions for BHPÆs Elouera Colliery, south of Wollongong.The portal area at the base of the Illawarra Escarpment is in soft colluvium material, underlain by highly to moderately weathered sandstone. The area has a well documented history of slope movement or slope creep and one of the main criteria for the design was to minimise disturbance to the unstable slope by limiting the excavation for the portal establishment. This was achieved by incorporating a sloped headwall and gabion wingwalls to accommodate the anticipated creep and groundwater seepage.Main features of the design process also included the provision of both primary and secondary support in a single shell application and the use of canopy tubes to provide support ahead of the tunnel face.The active involvement of the designer during the construction phase and the flexibility of the design concept allowed changes to the support methodology to be carried out as excavation proceeded.This paper describes the design process undertaken for portal establishment and access drift to cater for the variability of the exposed ground conditions along the drift alignment.

Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) fines from Western Australia is a hematite and limonite mix characterised by high crystal water content. Due to its higher supply capacity and lower prices, the Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation (Group) intended to use more FMG fines in the sinter mix. It is understood that sinter quality is closely related to its microstructure featured by the hardness and brittleness of different mineral phases, the content of micro pores, and trans-cracks. In order to maintain sinter qualities such as tumble index, reducibility and so on at higher FMG fines blend ratios, a research project was initiated to study the effects of the FMG fines blending ratio on sinter microstructure. Research results showed that at higher FMG fines ratios, the hardness of hematite and magnetite were both decreased while the hardness of calcium ferrite showed a tendency to decrease. The number of cracks that were generated during Vickers hardness measurement in various mineral phases decreased, but their length was shortened, and the variation of crack lengths increased. The contents of hematite and magnetite were also reduced and the reduction of magnetite was clearer. Also the content of calcium ferrite and pores rose and the magnitude of the increase of pores was greater. Among all the mineral phases in sinter cakes, the Vickers hardness of hematite was highest within the range of 879 N/mm2 ~ 942 N/mm2, and therefore the decrease of its content in sinter and the enhancement of its brittleness, ie the number of cracks increased, were harmful to sinter strength. In secondary steelmaking, calcium treatment is practised to modify the solid alumina or spinel inclusions into liquid or partially liquid calcium aluminates. It has been seen that the dissolved calcium reacts with sulfur or oxygen present in the steel to form CaS or CaO type of transient inclusions. Post-calcium treatment these transient inclusions further react with pre-existing alumina or spinel inclusions and modify them. In addition, direct modification of pre-existing inclusions is also reported in the literature. In the present study, laboratory-scale induction furnace-based experiments are carried out to melt electrolytic iron in an alumina crucible followed by deoxidation with aluminium. The CaS-based composite material, prepared in-house, is added after the aluminium deoxidation to study the stability of CaS at the steelmaking temperature. Multiple steel samples were also taken to track the dissociation of CaS by means of sulfur pick-up in steel. Additionally, inclusion analysis of these steel samples was also performed to track changes in the chemical composition of inclusions in response to CaS addition. It has been seen that the CaS dissociates leading to a gradual pick-up of sulfur in steel. The scanning electron microscope – energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis reveals that the alumina crucible and floated alumina inclusions are modified into calcium aluminates and the extent of modification depends on the contact time of CaS with the two sources of alumina mentioned earlier. However, the modification of alumina inclusions in the bulk steel did not occur during these experiments.

The past decade has seen a great increase in activity in deep seismic reflection profiling of the continental crust. Some 20 countries have conducted field experiments and the total length of deep seismic profiles surveyed to date is approximately 25,000 km. This total is very large compared to the quantity of such data that existed previously, but very small compared to the total length of seis- mic profiles of the shallow crust carried out for petroleum exploration, which some- times has exceeded 600,000 km on land in one year alone and 1,600,000 km/yr on land and sea. Furthermore, 25,000 km of seismic pro- filing corresponds to exploration of only a tiny fraction of the total volume of the entire continental crust. Thus at this stage of development of the subject, one must be wary of generalizations that are based on these limited data and then ex- tended in scope to include the crust everywhere. The state of the subject is such that virtually every new seismic line reveals totally unexpected seismic fea- tures, a sign that the subject is in its major discovery phase and a warning to the generalizers. Nevertheless, in addition to much new information on deep crustal structure in specific locations, some broad consequences of application of this powerful geophysical technique to a region of the earth not pre- viously explored in this manner are be- coming clear. One is that, as seismic data on the deep continental crust become more abundant and more revealing of complexi- ties, the deep crust can be far better re- lated to rocks at the surface. Conse- quently, the geological style of reason- ing is now being extended from its normal domain of the near-surface to include the deepest crust in a comprehensive story of the evolution of the continents. This change is a subtle but important one and is evident, for example, in some cross sec- tions of the North American Transect Pro- gram, which show surface geology extended in a consistent, though speculative, manner to the top of the mantle. Diamond drilling was first carried out at Norseman in the Princess Royal Mine, early in this century. Little concentl'ated drilling was done from then until Western Mining Corporation commenced drilling in 1934. Since then Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has continually employed diamond drilling in exploration of the field. After 1946 the advantage was seen of applying broad pattern surface drilling at Norseman in the reef exploration. In 1953, as a result of the steeply rising cost of drilling and the time taken to penetrate surface material by light equipment, heavier drills and new rigs were introduced. The surface drilling programmes called for a greater monthly or annual footage and to satisfy this new techniques were introduced. The Mitchell-21 machines were discarded and A-3000 machines were installed, firstly under a 48 ft. fixed tower, then mounted on a truck with a 20 ft. tower, and finally on a truck carrying a 40 ft. tower. With the mobile units a compressed air compressor is attached. By use of compressed air with either the Reed roller or Hawthorne bit, rate of penetration of overburden is greatly increased. The mobility of the truck mounted machines has greatly reduced the time required to move from one hole to another, and the use of heavier machines on a three shift per day basis has considerably increased the footage per shift. The general result is an increase to 1,500 ft. of drilling per month per machine, while costs have been greatly reduced in spite of increased wages and diamond prices.The underground drilling technique is described. Analysis of performance has not been made because the drillers performance is subject to shaft routine and service.INTRODUCTIONGold was first discovered at Dundas in 1894, and at Norseman, 14 miles north, in 1895. From that tirpe until 1935 mining activity fluctuated. Following the mining revival in 1935, production in the field has remained comparatively stable. This stability in part has been due to the broader scale of operations of Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L., and in these operations diamond drilling has played an increasingly important role.

Today's emphasis on the enterprise bargaining process must be seen as an opportunity for organisations to further develop occupational health and safety standards at work. In particular, this shift from a centralised industrial relations system to employer, employee bargaining, presents organisations with an excellent opportunity to develop OH & S at the `shop floor' level. This is despite real difficulties in presenting hard data on the cost benefits. Unfortunately, examination of enterprise agreements ratified by the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC), show that less than 32 per cent contain provision for occupational health and safety. Those addressing the issues of occupational health and safety have included segments such as: ò rehabilitation activities; ò a new emphasis for workplace occupational health and safety committees; ò formalising procedures related to hazard identification and control; ò the use of personal protective clothing; and ò occupational hygiene and health monitoring issues. For example, an enterprise agreement reached between CIG-Gases and their unions, included clauses which commit employees to attending ten safety meetings and two work place inspections each year, in order for them to receive any further pay rises.

The Yabulu Nickel Refinery commissioned in 1974, processes lateritic ore via a modified Caron process to produce high quality nickel and cobalt products. The Greenvale orebody provided the sole source of feed to the plant until 1990 and with well-blended mineralogy, it resulted in stable and predictable plant performance, allowing the operating focus to be on reducing energy consumption and increasing ore throughput. This approach provided better economics than pursuing increased reduction efficiency. From 1990, increasing quantities of lateritic ore were imported from Indonesia, Philippines and New Caledonia. This introduced considerable variation in ore blends and instability in plant operation but also provided the opportunity to treat higher grade ore blends which yielded higher reduction efficiencies. Ore reduction is conducted using 12 Herreshoff multiple hearth reduction furnaces, using heavy fuel oil as reductant. The æROASTERÆ Project was approved in November 2000 with the primary objective of improving Nickel reduction efficiency by: Stabilising Roaster Operation via a structured program including focused maintenance efforts, capital equipment upgrades, new process measurements, process re-design and improvements to operating skills and process troubleshooting. A structured technical program including laboratory and plant studies using one plant furnace as a pilot unit to develop improved knowledge of how the reduction process proceeds in the Herreshoff furnace. Armed with this knowledge, optimised process conditions and a reduction process model were developed contributing to a significant demonstrated reduction efficiency improvement. Technical input to the project was provided by QNI with Hatch providing the engineering and project management for the $8.5 M capital work. Execution of the work included extensive consultation with the plant operators and close cooperation between the Hatch project team and QNI operations personnel ensuring installations were completed with minimal production disruption. A strong focus on safety management resulted in a number of brownfields project relevant safety initiatives being implemented resulting in project completion without a serious injury.
