The key element in the carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing is the loading of dissolved Au(CN)2 from solution onto activated carbon. The mechanism and kinetics of this step have been examined by solution adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for both coconut derived activated carbon and peat-based activated carbon. The results show that these carbon types have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)Z is reversibly adsorbed intact on and parallel to the graphitic planes of the carbon with the formation of a weak carbon-gold n-donor bond. The kinetic measurement of carbon gold loading reactivity is discussed and use of the Murdoch equation for this test is critically assessed.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.On 8 February 2016, a major ground movement occurred in the K-Link orebody of the Kencana underground mine, effectively blocking the only two access ways to the stoping area. Following mine clearance, it was found that a Solo production drill rig operator, who had been drilling in the Level 10 Extraction Drive was still underground, cut off from the rest of the mine by the ground movement.Communication, nutritional and logistic supply to the trapped operator was established with the breakthrough of two diamond drill holes. A range of technical expertise and opinions from both on and off-site were sought and two options were chosen for implementation of the rescue operation. The PT Freeport Indonesiaæs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start the fourth-quarter of year 2000 and to ramp up to 25 000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarises the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of two of these fans. The fans were installed on the surface in parallel arrangement with two others. Each has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.

Mackenzie (1968, p. 167) inferred that amphibolitelayers grade into and may be correlated with footwall Potosi gneiss where it is thin under the thickest development of the "lead lode" in the New Broken Hill Consolidated mine, Broken Hill. This gradation from amphibolite to Potosi gneiss is tacitly assumed in many of the constructed crosssections of the southern end of the orebody, where amphibolite and Potosi gneiss, defined in hand specimen, are correlated in adjacent drill holes. Since I first enrolled to study Mining Engineering, the idea of working with big machinery and explosives has always appealed to me. After a few courses at uni, combined with vacation work and a number of presentations at the New LeadersÆ Conferences I had attended, I began to realise that the explosives side seemed to have more appeal than the others. As I look back on the past two and a half years that I have spent with Orica Australia Pty Ltd as part of their graduate program, I would have never imagined the dynamics of explosives in mining. This I put down to the ever changing and rapid development in technology converting blasting techniques into a defined predictable science. The opportunities I have been given have delivered all the appeals from when I first started my study. As a result of my entry into a profession that uses explosives to deliver broken rock in a range of mining and construction projects, through the use of advanced blasting technology and products, my experiences have been wide and varied. These experiences have included the use of OricaÆs i-konÖ detonator technology and blast design software to allow for blasting operations to occur in a range of environmentally sensitive quarrying and construction projects throughout New Zealand, to the implementation of various Orica blast based services aimed at improving dragline dig performance and reducing coal loss thus improve overall mine sustainability in the coal mines of Central Queensland, to the advanced utilisation of Orica explosive products and technology in a number of the worlds largest copper mines in Chile. I have witnessed first hand the blasting technology available within Orica Mining Services to both deliver fundamental changes in mining results and in turn kick off my career with a bang.

A Master of Applied Science degree course in Mining Geomechanics commenced in 1983 at The University of New South Wales, taught by extern- al (correspondence) studies. The course is aimed at graduates employed in the mining indust- ry, and especially people involved in geomechan- ics projects on a routine basis in remote locations. This kind of course is unique in Australia and is one of only two correspondence programmes available at this University. The author designed the course and nursed it through the early years, and was Director until 1986. The paper describes the teaching and assess- ment methods and also discusses aspects of admin- istration and coordination of such a course. It is concluded that an important need of the mining industry is being catered for and it appears that similar correspondence course for- mats would also be useful in other areas of the minerals industry.

The Macraes mine is producing 175 000 ounces Au/year from a mesothermal deposit with total resource of at least five million ounces. The deposit is hosted in greenschist facies Otago Schist, a widespread Mesozoic metasedimentary sequence that forms the basement of the South Island of New Zealand. Mineralisation was controlled by a late metamorphic shear zone which had both brittle and ductile structures accompanying mineralisation. The shear zone dips shallowly (about 15¦), subparallel to the shallow-dipping regional foliation, and mineralization occurred during southwesterly-directed thrust motion. Mineralisation occurred under greenschist facies conditions (about 350¦C) during uplift of the Otago Schist in the late Jurassic. No syn- or late-metamorphic igneous bodies occur within the schist belt. The hosting shear zone is up to 120 m thick, and is traceable for more than 30 km along strike. The shear zone is truncated by an underlying low angle normal fault that juxtaposes mineralised lower greenschist facies rocks on to unmineralised upper greenschist facies rocks.

Creative mine-designs are constantly being applied in the deep platinum mining industry in South Africa. Recently, this has resulted in deep hot mine-designs including room and pillar, bord and pillar or stall and pillar layouts and the use of in-stope trackless mechanisation. In these mines, the ventilation systems use refrigerated air and high fan pressures and as a result ventilation leakage can have a huge impact. Leakage is a serious impediment to cost-effective operation and potential leakage in future projects is a major factor in judging project viability. This paper describes certain mine layouts and quantifies the extent of the leakage. Based on typical field data, a range of seals from ævery poorÆ to ævery goodÆ was defined and used to estimate overall leakage. Within these mine networks the ventilation pressure, temperature and density all vary significantly and with the multiplicity of leakage paths it was necessary to make use of the VUMA-network simulation package. For the examples examined, the leakage was found to be up to 85 per cent for æpoorÆ category seals and up to 50 per cent for ægoodÆ category seals. The total air flow (and refrigeration) requirements grow exponentially with strike distance due to the compounding effects of higher pressure and more leakage paths. It is shown that beyond certain depths and strike distances the leakage will become so great that it will be impossible to operate cost-effectively û even with ægoodÆ seals. Indeed, in these examples the projects were not considered viable in their original format because of the high ventilation-cooling costs and the mine-designs were modified to include footwall drive systems û the cost of which was justified by the reduced strategic risk to operating ineffectiveness due to leakage.

There has been much debate in the past as to whether the Australasian Institute of Mining and Meteorology ("AusIMM") should issue valuation guidelines in addition to the ASX and NCSC requirements. My experience in preparing independent expert reports has been that "best practice" sets higher standards than any laws or requirements set out by the ASX and NCSC. This is where I see the AusIMM coming in.

For certain applications, steels have to feature a very distinct and well-defined level of cleanness in terms of the number and composition of non-metallic inclusions. Therefore, one crucial aspect of steelmaking is removing and controlling said non-metallic inclusions during the process. Particle removal during ladle refining comprises three stages, namely: 1. Flotation 2. Transport through the steel/slag interface 3. Dissolution of the particle in the slag. Only if all three stages are completed the particle can be considered as fully removed from the steel melt which, in turn, leads to the slag being one of the most influential parameters for inclusion removal and control. Depending on the composition of the particles and the slag, the dissolution can be controlled by different mechanisms. This study focuses on the diffusion-controlled dissolution of solid oxidic particles in slags. For this, a model of particle dissolution has been developed. For modelling diffusion, either the differential equation following Fick’s second law can be solved, or an analytical solution to this equation valid for stationary interfaces can be used. Both approaches allow for calculations of concentration profiles of the dissolving species in surrounding slag. From this, the mass flux can be derived, which finally leads to calculating the boundary layer velocity due to considerations of mass balance. In this work, both methods as well as results of dissolution experiments using High Temperature Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy are compared. This research aims to provide a framework for diffusion-based dissolution modelling in further expanding the understanding of particle dissolution in secondary metallurgy.

The paper describes the preparation of new rail guides, removing existing rails, and replacing with new rails in a vertical winding shaft.INTRODUCTIONThe general practice in coal winding shafts is the use of two cages, with one or more decks in which men and materials are raised or lowered. Winding speeds vary according to depth, the type of winding gear, and whether winding is done in downcast or upcast shafts. Each cage occupies a position between the centre and side of the shaft, with a clearance depending on the type of guides used. The function of the guides is to keep the cage in position throughout the entire depth of the shaft. There are three types of guides, two of which are in general use.1. Selected wood of about 6 in. square section, fixed to the side of buntons.2. Solid strand steel made up similarly to that of an ordinary wire rope, suspended from the head frame with weights attached to the lower end.3. Standard T-rail sections fixed to end or side buntons. Of the three types, 2 and 3 are in general use. Anglo American Corporation has always viewed technological development as vital and as such has placed research and the implementation of new technological practices high on its priority list. Support is given to a number of research institutes but a significant degree of reliance is placed on in-house research carried out at individual companies and at the Group's main laboratory complexes. The Corporation's interests are diverse with advanced practices and innovative technology ranging from new battery technology with wide application to deep level shaft technology with very specific application. In this paper, we aim to concentrate on a particular system developed primarily for use in seismically active deep mines. The system has proved to have far wider application and has the potential to be further enhanced to meet the needs of users across a broad range within the industry and even beyond. As the nature of this conference is to inform delegates of advanced mining practices, we should simply mention that we could have talked on subjects relating to the advances made in deep level winding technology including winder drive and brake control to alleviate dynamic rope loads, shaft steel design for high pay load high speed winding and shaft safety systems such as slack rope devices and moving lip loading facilities to cater for rope stretch. Other areas of interest relating to refrigeration using ice technology or non-explosive rock cutting using diamond wire or saw technology could also have been of interest. As the South African gold mines become deeper and the problems associated with depth become more acute, answers had to be found and systems developed to cope with very high rock stress and the related seismicity. The fundamental understanding of the behaviour of the rock mass has always been important but became critical on our mines to ensure the safe extraction of the orebody. Basic research into and the application of physics, applied mathematics, seismology, rock mechanics, electronics and computer technology have helped us to develop the Integrated Seismic System - Integrated because of the system's abilty to monitor seismic and non-seismic sensors simultaneously and because it encompasses data acquisition, processing and interpretation into one system. The system which is in use at all our gold mines has found application not only in South Africa but also in such locations as Australia, Chile, Canada, Europe and Japan. A highly motivated team of scientists under the leadership of Aleksander Mendecki developed the majority of the hardware and software needed for the system. In essence, the system allows us real time monitoring of energy release and stress transfer data that with the aid of modern computers is turned into useful information. The information so obtained has allowed us to improve our mine and extraction designs to minimise the inherent hazards. The system has proved to be an extremely useful management tool as substantiated by the demand for the product. The paper is intended to convey to the reader the technical concepts and the presentation is intended to demonstrate the usefulness of the system.

The adsorption mechanism of three different O,OÆ-di-alkyl-dithiophosphate (dtp) collectors, K[S2P(OR)2] with R = Et, i-Bu and i-Amyl, on the surface of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) was studied by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The morphology changes on the conditioned Cu2S surfaces, in the collector concentration range 0.1 - 10 mM, were also monitored with scanning electron microscope (SEM). In order to assign Cu(I)-dtp species on the surface of Cu2S, the corresponding bulk Cu(I)-dtp compounds, which are clusters of the monovalent copper containing either Cu6(antiprismatic) or Cu8(cubic) cores, were synthesised, and characterised by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS and static 65Cu NMR. Further investigations on the crystal habits of the bulk systems were carried out by powder x-ray diffraction and SEM. A comparative analysis of the 31P chemical shift and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) data estimated from the experimental NMR spectra of the polycrystalline bulk Cu(I) dialkyldithiophosphate complexes was used for assigning the 31P resonance lines in the NMR spectra of the collector treated Cu2S powder samples. The species formed on the synthetic Cu2S surfaces were assigned to polycrystalline phases of: Cu6L6 with L = Et2dtpû, Cu6L6 and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Bu2dtpû, and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Amyl2dtpû. A heterophase autocatalytic step process of both formation and growth of solid CuxLy (L = R2dtp, x = 6 or 8 and y = 6) complexes on the collector treated Cu2S surface is proposed. A possible role of the oxidised form of dithiophosphate collectors, bis[di-alkyl-thiophosphoryl]-disulfane (disulfide), is discussed in terms of a specific self-redox reaction. The second order quadrupolar lineshapes in 65Cu NMR spectra were simulated and the interaction parameters, CQ and hQ, for the bulk dialkyldithiophosphato-copper(I) complexes were obtained.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASSM) offers lucrative employment opportunities to the locals of most developing countries. The major drawback of ASSM is its adverse impacts on the environment resulting from improper mining and processing techniques. Papua New Guinea (PNG) has very active ASSM activities. The artisanal and small-scale gold mining in PNG provide employment at local and national levels and the sector is an important source for inflow of foreign exchange into rural communities. However, small-scale mining activities are associated with sensitive health and environmental issues. The process of recovering gold by retorting and heating the amalgam over an open fire is a dangerous health practice. This paper discusses artisanal and small-scale gold mining operations in PNG and their impacts on the local environment.

Getting it right is a very profitable outcome. Shareholders would ideally like to see their directors get it right all the time on the major economic decisions. But it is very difficult for mining directors to get it right all the time in such an uncertain environment. Primary decision-makers of companies with significant stakes in the mining industry should get it right much more frequently. The legal measures of evidence (beyond reasonable doubt and on the balance of probabilities) can be used to determine whether grade estimates (a key revenue variable) are realistic. The application of this approach can be far reaching. More frequently correct decision-making would result in more effective allocation of limited resources (capital and labour). In turn, this would result in higher financial returns and a more extensive mining industry.

The design of most underground mining machines shows little evidence of regard for ergonomic principles and operator comfort. Likewise, efficiency and ease of operation often appear to have been given little consideration in machines where ruggedness and simplicity have tended to dictate the configuration. Improvements in productivity are amongst the benefits to be gained by a different approach to machine design. The paper describes the philosophy and features of a test bed Load-Haul-Dump Vehicle undergoing trials at Mount Isa Mines. This machine is the outcome of a Research and Development Programme conducted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Queensland and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The diesel powered test bed features an enclosed, air conditioned cabin, with a suspended operator's control station and electrically operated controls. An electronically controlled hydrostatic transmission incorporating wheel slip control, is another innovation. The performance and operator acceptance of the machine has led to adoption of most of the concepts in a new machine now being put into production.

With the next mining boom looming, the industry will once again struggle to meet skills needed as the current generation boomers are set to retire. In order to meet these needs it is going to need to focus on what underutilised human resources - in particular women - want!   Women comprise around 14 per cent of the mining workforce, compared with a 45 per cent participation rate in the work force overall. Within the industry, women still make up only one per cent of trades people, eight per cent of operators/production employees, 12 per cent of engineers and 11 per cent of executive management.   It may be worth pointing out that mining has an age profile skewed towards the older end of the spectrum. When it comes to employee retention, what women want may be a good starting point to examine, more broadly, what all employees might want (but are too afraid to ask!).   Women in mining want the following: To be scrutinised for their work and performance, not their personal lives, appearance or relationships. True pay equity. This is addressed at lower levels between companies but at professional levels the salary differentials begin to appear and little is done to identify why this continues to be the case. Recognition and acceptance that women can have different work-styles, and that diversity of work-styles is an asset to be nurtured not a threat to be neutralised! Recognition that a more diverse workforce demographic that better reflects society at large will assist the company in its dealings with many diverse stakeholders from society at large. For employers to recognise that a career break to accommodate caring responsibilities does not mean that an employee's commitment to progressing their career is any less than that of someone who has not taken a career break. Similarly, for employers to recognise that working part-time for to accommodate caring responsibilities does not mean that an employee's commitment to progressing their career is any less than someone who works a more traditional roster. Access to affordable and quality child care compatible with mining rosters in mining towns. Zero tolerance for bullying and harassment, and workplace cultures that promote respect and safety. Asteroids contain an abundance of valuable resources such as: nickel, cobalt, gold, platinum and rhodium. Whilst the consumption of mineral resources on Earth continues to deplete, meteoroids have the potential to become a significant source of minerals. Even though the minerals content of asteroids may be relatively high, the valuable minerals are more likely to be only a small portion of the total ore present in the main body. The ores must, therefore, be processed to extract the metals of interest from the waste. Existing terrestrial technologies rely on manipulating the physical and chemical properties of minerals. The application of these techniques to asteroids processing, however, is not straightforward due to the presence of different conditions such as zero gravity and lack of water in space.
