Bauxite Resources Limited is grade drilling in its Western Australian Darling Range tenements to firm up resource definition and to develop mine plans. The Darling Range bauxite is generally in shallow deposits with minimum overburden. In the northern tenements, the ore is characterised by a higher silica layer which may extend from 0.5 to 1.5 m below, which high grade bauxite is found to a depth of four to 7 m. When grade drilling samples are taken, every 0.5 m and the recovered sample is weighed, logged and bagged. To eliminate splitting errors, the whole sample over the short interval is pulverised. Twinning holes variations are observed when using various drill rigs. Diamond core has been shown to give close to 100 per cent recovery and grades have been verified by digging bulk samples. As such, diamond core is used as the reference. It is intended to include sonic drilling as an alternative to diamond cores. This presentation details and attempts to explain the reasons for the observed variations in the various drilling methods used by Bauxite Resources Limited. HISTORY Up until the late 1880's the mining industry acquired a considerable proportion of its capital needs from domestic sources. Exchanges were established wherever major new fields were opened and Ballarat, Bendigo, Charters Towers, Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and Silverton all boasted active trading in mining shares. For much of the first half of this century there was only modest developments in the mining industry and its capital require- ments were correspondingly lower. RECENT EXPERIENCE The new mines of the sixties were, in many cases, characterised by their remote situation and their output of bulk commodities such as iron ore., coal and bauxite. Infra- structure costs were particularly high and the level of capital expenditure was of previously unheard of proportions.

This paper discusses considerations to be made for the selection of rock tunnelling machines, as opposed to drilling and blasting. A systematic approach is presented in terms of utilizing data frcm site investigations to accurately forecast machine performance for estimating and planning purposes and to help minimise associated risks. Useful rock index properties are identified, and correlations for predicting advance rates for roadheader and full face machines are presented together with a simple method of characteristing rock mass conditions for estimating machine utilization and the savings to be gained in support costs. Finally considerations for tunnelling in adverse ground, for advance probing and for large sized tunnels are outlined.

Detailed observations were made for two existing continuous miner and shuttlecar systems. A simple model for the shift average cycle consisted of three time components - delays, mining and transport. Cycle improvement and productivity improvement factors are derived and used to predict the theoretical improvement which the observed cycles could achieve. Various strategies of action ranging from short-term optimisation through to long-term planning for continuous haulage systems are evaluated. High potential for improvement is shown for a wide range of operating conditions. An overview is presented for systems, currently available or under active development, which can accept coal directly from continuous miners and offer continuous haulage to the surface. Systems are broadly classified as mechanical-roof mounted, mechanical-floor mounted and hydraulic transportation.

Slope stability is a critical safety and production issue for open cut mines. The æslope stability radarÆ has been developed to remotely scan a rock slope to continuously measure the movement of the face. The system can detect and alert movements of a rough wall with sub-millimetre precision, and with reliability and resolution. The advantage of the slope stability radar over other monitoring techniques is that it provides full area coverage without the need for mounted reflectors or equipment on the wall. In addition, the radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. The measurement technique is tolerant of vibrations and overcomes the need for a highly stable footing required by traditional surveying systems, making it easy to move from one location to another. The system is self-powered and designed for minimal maintenance. Radar displacement images, co-registered with digital photography images, are transferred from the radar site in the pit to the mine office via a radio telemetry link. Custom-written software provides mine managers and geotechnical engineers with a complete picture of slope movements over defined time intervals. The time-history of the movement of any selected points or regions on the slope can also be displayed. Also provided is the ability to set movement thresholds that will trigger alarms at the radar site or mine office. The system has been used at numerous coal and metalliferous mines in Australia, and has provided real-time monitoring of slope stability during active mining operations. More than 20 rock wall and spoil failures have been captured by the system, and on every occasion adequate warning was provided to mine operators. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face provides a better understanding of the geodynamics, which leads to extra warning time. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining operations.

A small modification to current industrial practice should lead to better nickel powders for use in alloying, electroplating, and powder metallurgy. Nickel powder compacts sold for alloying are not always suitable for electroplating applications, since some presently used commercial powders will expand on sintering. Further, such nickel powders are unsuitable for use in the production of powder metal parts, because of expansion during heating of the near-net-shape preforms. Research in these laboratories has enabled the elimination of expansion, and led to techniques for the production of compacts suitable, in particular, for commercial use in both alloying and electroplating. The techniques include: powder pretreatment, cold pressing and sintering, hot pressing, and hot pressing and sintering. In this way compacts are readily prepared with densities of at least 93 per cent of solid nickel, and these, when used as anodes in Watts general purpose and bright baths, give both cathode current and plating efficiencies of 90-98 per cent.

Sintering of lead-zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation to provide both desulfurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulfur dioxide gas for sulfuric acid manufacture.Moisture control of feed mixes is of paramount importance in the sintering operation and improvements in this area have realised increases in overall plant performance.

During the development of Lorca tunnel project in the South-East of Spain, an in-site study has been done, with the purpose of obtaining the characteristics of the different lithological units through twenty-two parameters for the design of the tunnel excavation and support. In the paper both the different works developed and the different methods and criteria followed in the obtention of the parameters are described. The values of those parameters may be useful in similar cases. Also a summary-table of the parametrical characterization for the use in similar studies is given.

Despite the limited literature regarding the pressure filtration of mine tailings (compared to the large number of papers published each year on paste thickening of tailings) the number of mines dry stacking filtered tailings is approximately equal to the number of mines storing tailings in paste form. Main drivers for filtering tailings are: water recovery, future rehabilitation costs for tailings storage area and permitting requirements. In arid climates, the cost and scarcity of water justify the capital and operating costs associated with pressure filters. Further justification for filtered tailings is the potential for progressive reclamation of the dry stack, which can proceed earlier and faster than the reclamation of a tailings dam.Filtered tailings must be transported to the storage area by trucks or conveyors. For dry stacking, 70 - 80 per cent solids content (by mass) is typically acceptable, however the primary goal is to provide a filter cake that is consolidated and dry enough to prevent bridging and build-up on the materials handling equipment. It has been observed that high average solids contents (~70 per cent) can be achieved while the centre of the filter cakes is still wet and sticky, presenting challenges for the transportation of the solids. Appropriate controls must be in place to ensure consistently easy to handle solids are discharged from the filter.FLSmidth has installed two fine coal tailings dewatering systems in the United States. One of these systems incorporates a Deep Cone Thickener« upstream of the filter press to minimise the amount of water that must be filtered, while the other tailings filter press is fed by a high rate thickener. The operation and performance of these filters is discussed and compared to the lab testing used to size the full-scale equipment.CITATION:Pepper, D, 2012. A pilot scale laboratory investigation of manual slurry sampling methods representative of those used in the minerals industry is described. Samples were taken from slurries made up from silica particles of various sizes and in various concentrations from a stirred tank and from the discharge lip of a rectangular launder. Sampling methods from the tank included immersion flasks and several configurations of a suction probe. The launder was sampled using a conventional narrow-mouth ladle and also with a 'mouth organ' stream splitter. Samples were analysed for overall solids concentration and size distribution and showed different but always significant and often large biases relative to the known overall composition of the slurry, the nature and extent of bias being dependent on pulp concentration, particle size, sampling method and sampling location. Results clearly show the very great difficulty of obtaining representative samples by simple sampling techniques, although the data suggest that errors can be reduced by using an appropriately designed and operated suction probe. Further work will be carried out with the objective of establishing guidelines for industrial sampling practice.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

Increasing the upper particle size limit of flotation would allow operators to increase mill throughput, save operating costs, simplify flow sheets, and increase rate of return. However, coarse particle flotation is difficult for various reasons, of which bubble-particle detachment has been identified as the major limiting factor. In the present work, the process of bubble-particle detachment has been studied by directly measuring the forces required to detach air bubbles from hydrophobic solids. The measurements were conducted using a hanging balance apparatus. The measured forces were converted to detachment energies that can be compared with the work of adhesion, which in turn is a function of hydrophobicity, surface tension and contact area. The results were converted to detachment energies using the Young-Laplace equation for capillarity. In the present work, the solid surfaces were hydrophobised by coating them with octadecyltrichlorosilane and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The results show that bubble-particle detachment occurs in two steps. In the first step, air bubbles are deformed, while the three-phase contact (TPC) line is pinned, until contact angle reaches advancing angle. In the second step, the TPC line moves along the surface until solid/air interface is replaced by solid-liquid interface. In general, the energies of detachment measured in the second step are in good agreement with calculated work of adhesion. Thus, the energy required during the first step effectively represents an energy barrier for bubble-particle detachment. It has been found that the energy barrier varies with surface roughness and surface tension. The results of the present investigation suggest, therefore, that coarse particle flotation can be improved by control of particle hydrophobicity, surface roughness, and surface tension.

The Australian economy has been adversely affected by the hesitation in developing countries to commit to the construction of .new coal-fired power stations. World coal trade which was expected to grow at an appreciable rate has stagnated, world export coal prices have plummetted, and facilities in place in Australia for the production and export of coal are being underutilized. While in some countries this hesitation has been caused by a reduction in electricity load growth, another cause has been the unduly long lead-time imposed on developing countries by the conventional "Banker's Approach" to the planning and initiation of commitments to finance and construct coal-fired power plants. In some countries electricity growth has been met by increased usage of indigenous energy resources, even though this involves costs in excess of imported coal-fired power generation. The avoidance of foreign exchange commitments in these cases can however be desirable. In many other developing countries however, fuel oil continues to be used for power generation at a cost in foreign exchange of up to 50% above the total cost of coal fuel plus capital to construct a new coal-fired power station. The conventional "Bankers Approach" to new power station planning imposes the need for successive feasibility studies to satisfy the normal processes of international development lending agencies. No feasibility study can however, show how keen vendor countries may be to win major power plant contracts; and no feasibility study can determine whether the power station eventually procured will be one of the more reliable, at better than 80% availability, or one of the more unreliable at worse than 60% Availability.

This case study describes various aspects of establishing a laboratory facility for testing chemically-cemented fill materials. The applicability of data obtained from such a facility related to mine conditions depends on many factors: kind of data, type of testing facility, sample parameters (composition, geometry, size, etc.). The equipment employed must be adaptable, to accommodate variations in sample size and properties. The design, construction and operation of the testing facility is described, and its application to fill samples prepared from sulphides and oxides both chemically and naturally cemented. The present system was selected following an extensive study of equipment available for testing materials in the fields of rock mechanics and construction materials. The strength testing' facility incorporates Linear Variable Differential Transformers for monitoring both lateral and axial displacements during sample compression. The output from these and from other related instrumentation can be recorded or fed direct to a computer, enabling stress-strain data to be printed out while the test is in progress. Also described are controlled environment curing facilities which allow samples to be cured or weathered under different temperature or humidity conditions to simulate long-term ageing and in place conditions.

The paper is introduced by some general comments on the Electrolytic Zinc Company West Coast Mines operations. An outline of the geology of the Rosebery Mine orebodies preced- es a resume of the mining methods used prior to the current mechanization programme. The reasons for the introduction of longhole stoping techniques are given together with a brief explanation of both sublevel longhole and longhole stoping methods. The application of remotely controlled loaders within these stoping methods is discussed. A description of the remote control mechanisms, used on Atlas Copco 310 and 511 Cavo loaders, is followed by comments on these mechanisms from both a maintenance and production viewpoint. A summary of perform- ance statistics and operator safety records vindicate the selection of remotely controlled loaders for the longhole stoping areas at Rosebery Mine.

The education system today is turning out potential Mine Managers and Superintendents for the coal industry who are lacking in adequate management knowledge. They are required by the Mining Act to be highly skilled operators who are operations and production oriented. This puts them in much the same category as airline pilots and ships' captains. The real need is for them to be management and profit orientated. Changes over the years in Managers' and Superintendents' roles are highlighted by identifying those professions and vocations with whom they must now work. Comparing classifications in the 1916 award and the current award, and making a comparison between management and mining degree courses, leads to the conclusion that separate degree courses are necessary for future Mine Managers and Mining Engineers. Mine management must become a profession in its own right if optimum profits are to be made from mining in the future.

Due to the low concentration of gold, ore sorting for gold has always required measuring indirect properties, such as density or colour, to allow separation on a rock by rock basis. This only works on an ad hoc, by deposit basis and is likely to be least reliable where it is most required in low grade ores. One candidate technique, Gamma Activation Analysis (GAA) has been demonstrated to directly measure gold extremely accurately in powder samples of around 500gm and is used in the Chrysos PhotonAssay assay system. This method uses a linear accelerator (linac) to generate the X-ray radiation that activates the ore at low levels to emit a characteristic gold gamma ray that is then measured by a radiation detector. CSIRO is adapting this measurement technique to application on a belt at up to 800tph to measure pods of ore. The principal differences between measuring samples and an on-line measurement of pods are the requirement to measure coarse ore (<50mm), to measure a larger volume of ore as uniformly as possible, and to have an open-ended geometry with adequate shielding of the linac radiation source. These issues have all been addressed with measurements of coarse ore reported down to around 1ppm in sub-optimal test conditions. They have been demonstrated for <75mm particles with detectors capable of measuring a large volume geometry continuously. These are projected to allow measurements down to 0.3ppm in more optimum conditions for a 10 second measurement time period where the U/Th content of the ore is less than ~10ppm. Extensive Monte Carlo modelling has demonstrated that adequate shielding can be provided in relatively simple geometries with only 1 right angle transfer in the material handling. Steady progress is being made to reach the technical position required to trial an ore sorting system.

This paper describes the design and constructability issues investigated in the selection of a trenchless solution in comparison to trenched construction options as part of a scoping study for the augmentation of the existing Bulimba Creek Trunk Sewer in Brisbane. Initial work involved the planning of alignment options vis-a-vis ground geology, geotechnical conditions, location and depth of shafts considering potential construction technology, flotation and stability of the tunnel, availability of construction sites and the influence of construction works on neighbourhood properties and the immediate environment. Two design pipe sizes, DN1200 and DN1500, were considered, and factors including jacking forces, specification of product pipes, pipe joints, pipe jacking methods and the associated impacts of ground settlement were carried out. Of particular interest was research on suitable lubricating fluids with the potential to minimise jacking forces and maximise the length of pipeline between launch and reception shafts.

This paper aims to show alternatives to the estimation methods used for finding the parameters in GyÆs well known model for sampling variance in the case of particulate materials. Many experiments designed for gathering data on the sampling variance for specific mineral deposits allow the experimenter to use approximations in the calculation of the parameters of the mathematical model involved, which sometimes can be very useful. However, there are some instances where approximations lead to biased estimates of the parameters, and consequently, lead to errors in the establishment of the sampling protocol and treatment of quality control data. In the present work, an alternative is presented for computing the parameter values based in any experimental set up, without the need for any simplification. The method was derived using the method of least squares and evaluations are made using the usual tools in this kind of methodology: residual analysis and evaluation of the fit by means of a plot of calculated versus experimental variances. With the aid of these tools, one can better evaluate the structure of the experimental errors in such applications, and the adherence to the proposed model. In addition, it is possible to perform hypothesis testing for the equality of different sampling procedures in terms of sampling variance. The full mathematical details are given, together with an algorithm for applying the method, which can be implemented easily using any computer language. An illustration of the method is shown, considering the international work done in ISO/TC 102. This example is a determination of the minimum sample mass to be collected in iron ore shipments, in order to achieve a specified sampling precision.

This session comprises six papers: One paper is specifically on advances in drilling techniques, a paper presents a classification for water inrush rich with corresponding guidelines for protection, two papers are concerned with mining impacts in integrated catchment management - one from the quality viewpoint and the other from the quality viewpoint, and the final two papers are case studies of mine dewatering - one for an underground mine threatened by a karst limestone aquifer and the other of an open-cut mine threatened by interbedded sand aquifers. The paper entitled, Practical mine dewatering by means of surface drilled wells by Sides is innovative in presenting the case for wells as cost effective and appropriate for a number of purposes including exploration, re-opening old mines, dewatering, grout emplacement and monitoring.
