Projections of metal requirements for Japan and the United States indicate growing competit- ion for Australia's mineral output and a critical need for continuing discovery of new reserves. These projections may be modified by economic, social and political controls - the most import- ant factor probably being a shortage and the high cost of risk and development capital. Changing ownership patterns toward joint ventures and increased state participation are anticipated. New developments in global tectonics and metallogeny delineate favourable zones for ex- ploration and permit establishment of priority search areas even in regions of poorly known geology. Declining ore grades and special character- istics to meet technological requirements may modify identification and evaluation criteria. A broad approach considering all environments of concentration within the geochemical cycle is re- quired within any metallogenic province. The exploration geologist must be able to integrate geological theory, mining technology and financial analysis to establish well defined exploration objectives, in terms of economic and geologic models, in concept-oriented programmes.

Acceptable post-closure performance of decommissioned mining operations is a critical factor in persuading todayÆs environmentally conscious public that the mining industry will not continue to burden future generations with the legacy of environmental tragedies. Post-closure impacts must be identified and managed through robust engineering design if the post-closure environment is to be environmentally sustainable. To manage potential post-closure risks (environmental, health, safety, social and economic) within acceptable limits, WMC incorporates a risk-based approach to closure planning and engineering design. WMCÆs risk-based closure engineering design process provides a simple methodology for developing robust closure plans û the process æengineers outÆ unacceptable risks and æengineers inÆ a sustainable post-closure environment. Benefits of the risk-based process include stakeholder endorsed closure criteria for an agreed post-closure land-use, focusing of resources on major risks, and a realistic and accurate estimate of the required closure provision. The outcome is an increased likelihood of satisfying the three pillar goals of sustainable development û a financially sound solution that poses a low risk to the environment and future generations.

In order to formulate appropriate and useful education and training policies and practices, it is crucial to firstly consider the demographic environment of our workforce-and the direction in which it is (known to be) heading. We can predict with a degree of certainty, that the role and influence of training on the future survivability of organisations will- become increasingly critical. This will be particularly relevant for those industries and organisations which are technologically based. The ad-hoc use of training is and, will no longer be appropriate. Organisations must move toward the on-going use of a dynamic education and training strategy based on an effective staff development programme, which meets the short and medium term needs of the organisation. Considerable confusion is to be found in the methods of estimating mineral reserves. The solution appears to be more cooperation between industry and government to agree upon a classification system with guidelines to overcome the problem of the many variable factors affecting reserves. The classification system proposed by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Geological Survey (USBM/USGS) together with the guidelines similar to those suggested by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy/Australian Mining Industry Council (AusIMM/AMIC) is recommended for reporting mineral reserves to government.

A number of forecasting methods are available to mine management to help predict the most likely outcome of some particular event thus enabling management to make more cost effective decisions. Three general classes of models can be used to predict future events qualitative, structural and time series, the most effective method in most cases being time series. Time series methods can be applied to predict future events from a series of past observations. Various time series techniques are reviewed with a comparison of their relative advantages and disadvantages.

The recent rapid escalation in computer use by mining companies, particularly in technical applications, can in part be traced to a growth in the availability of specialist packaged software. Such software, often developed by independent software companies provides economies of scale, end user orien- tation and breadth of scope imposed by market forces. The emphasis in Australia, until recently, has been on large scale mining methods with drive sizes in excess of 4.5 metres square and the acceptance of high dilution ratios, even when working in relatively narrow orebodies. The rising cost of extracting and treating the recovered ore and the lower prices available in the world markets has seen a growing trend to narrow mining methods.Traditionally narrow orebody mining has been carried out using hand held drilling methods and rail mounted boggers. Recent advances in mobile equipment now offers the operator of narrow method mines the opportunity to completely mechanise the mine from the drilling, through bogging to haulage, while maintaining minimal dilution in drive sizes to two metres wide or less.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. This paper aims to highlight the global exploration opportunities that exist in connection with Ural-Alaskan (UA)-type intrusions. The key economic importance of UA intrusions is the existence of metallic platinum (mainly iron-platinum alloys) associated generally with chromite mineralisation and located within a dunite core, especially its coarse-grained part. Being very dense and resistant to erosion, platinum can form rich placers as the intrusion erodes. Big multimillion ounce placer platinum deposits of this type have historically been successfully mined for many years (eg Russia, Colombia and Alaska).However, large-scale exploration and mining of platinum placers currently occurs only in the Russian Far East. Outside of Russia, there is now little or no understanding of this type of deposit and its economic importance. Using successful operations in Russia as examples, it is demonstrated that there are many opportunities for similar discoveries all around the world, especially around the Pacific Rim, where such intrusions tend to be concentrated. Examples of highly prospective areas in eastern Australia and New Zealand are given. There is also excellent potential in British Columbia (BC) Canada, South-East Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia) and South America (Colombia and Ecuador).CITATION:Nazimova, Y and Ryan, G, 2015. To obtain the best economic results in treating the comparatively high-grade ore of the Kalgurli Mine a good roast is essential, and the effort of this paper will be to briefly describe the plant and the conditions prevailing in roasting, which, on an output of about 360 tons daily, subsequently enable an average extraction of slightly over 94% of the gold to be maintained.The percentage of sulphur in the ore varies between 2'5 and 3'5, the lower figure existing when treating oxidized ore. The average gold value is 13 dwt; this occurs chiefly as sylvanite, containing .a lower percentage of silver than is usually present in that mineral. One ore body in the mine contains hessite (Ag2Te) in considerable quantity, associated with gold telluride, and when ore from this stope is being treated the silver contents rise to as high as 20 dwt, but the usual amount is about 9 dwt. per ton, of which only a small proportion is extracted. Other metallic minerals, in addition to pyrite, occurring more or less commonly, are arsenopyrite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, and the tellurides calaverite (AuTez)and coloradoite HgzTe3). A small proportion only of the value occurs as free gold.

Short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral reflectance of the hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the footwall of the Hellyer Zn-Pb massive sulfide deposit was measured with a portable PIMATM infrared spectrometer. The Al-OH absorption band was used to derive information on the cation composition of white mica. The wavelength range of the Al-OH band from 2194 nm to 2222 nm reflects variation in the number of octahedral Al (Alvi) in white mica from 3.9 to 3.2 (based on four octahedral cations per formula). This Alvi range indicates a substantial compositional variation, covering most of the compositional region between muscovite (Alvi = 4.0) and phengite (Alvi = 3.0). Moreover, the spectral reflectance data show that the compositional variations of white mica are spatially related to the hydrothermal alteration zoning, such that the white mica of more phengitic composition tends to form in the main upflow fluid channels in the centre of the footwall alteration system. The results suggest that the octahedral Al content of white mica, which is spectrally definable by the wavelength of the Al-OH band using a field instrument such as the PIMATM, can be used to map fossil hydrothermal systems and potentially as vectors to mineralisation.

The commonly used stainless steels, their properties and uses are briefly discussed.Two specific topics are then explored in more detai's to highlight development areas, the potential of which has been largely unexploited in mining milling, refining and smelting operations. The high strength to weight ratios achievable in austenitic stainless steels has been widely used in the transport industry to design high integrity light weight vehicles,especially railway carriages. This use has rarely been extended into other structural areas where highly aggressive environments could make stainless steel a cost effective material compared to protected carbon steels. The recently developed weldable ferritic steels are described and their potential in materials handling discussed. Particular attention is paid to 3CR12, a nominal 12% Chromium, titanium stabilised steel finding wide acceptance in the mining industry.

The annual price negotiations are the focus of widespread comment and speculation by financial analysts, journalists and mining professionals. Much is written on the subject, but how much is understood? What is the process all about and what can mine managers learn from understanding the pricing mechanism? Every one of the major regional iron ore markets has its own characteristics. The focus here is Australian supply specifically to Asia, far and away the biggest and fastest-growing of these regional markets. The core of the paper reviews and explains the key elements and procedures that contribute to pricing iron ore in Asia, a market that has long been dominated by the Japanese steel mills (JSMs) and that is now feeling the full force generated by the rapid industrialisation of China. First, however, it is important to understand how this market has evolved over the past 40 years, and the key relationships that have shaped and continue to shape the iron ore price. A description of the essential technical and commercial factors follows. Each area is explained in some detail to provide an overall demonstration of the linkages and the importance of understanding the various influences on the pricing process.

The paper describes the application of New Zealand's environmental impact assessment procedures to a proposed gold and silver mine in the North Island of New Zealand. The project is described and a summary is provided of the statutory permits or consents that are required prior to operation of the project. Emphasis is given to the requirement for environmental impact assessment and the preparation of a formal environmental impact report. The company's approach to impact assessment is described, with examples of how this assessment and the identification of management alternatives influenced the engineering design of the project. This paper was prepared as a contribution to a working session of the International Association of Impact Assessment VII Annual Conference, July 1988.

Conventionally, a combined system consist- ing of a dry or wet pulverizer and kneading mac- hine is applied to the pretreatment of fine mat- erials for agglomeration, especially for pellet- izing. However, treatment cannot be expected to be satisfactory owing to the complexities of the process. A new process was developed to over- come the defects inherent in the conventional process. This new process treats certain fine materials having a moisture content somewhat lower than that suitable for pelletizing in a ball or rod mill. The mill is of special de- sign in which grinding and strong kneading are performed to give an extremely homogeneous ball- ing material with appropriate size distribution and pelletizing characteristics. The most serious problem in this process is the choking of sticky materials in the mill. A specially designed rubber lining was installed in the mill to overcome this trouble. This paper presents actual results from our iron ore pelletizing plant relating to the pelletization of other fine materials.

A very wide range of technologies are utilised in the mining and processing of ores and a great deal of effort is expended in the development of ænew technologiesÆ to improve mining performance and economics. Traditionally, technology and people have been treated as separate aspects of an operation, when in fact they are inextricably linked. The successful implementation of new technologies is entirely dependent upon the actions, enthusiasm and skills of people, both as individuals and working in groups. This paper discusses the role of technology in mining and how new technologies are implemented by the industry. The paper argues that existing technologies have not been fully or adequately utilised and that effort should be re-focussed on the implementation of technologies that have been taken for granted for many years. The need for greater emphasis to be placed on the management of the human-technology interface is discussed.

In the time since the first trials in the mid-1980s, the Rare-Earth Magnetic Separators (REMS) are presently (year 2001) found in many heavy mineral sands plants around the world. Both the roll and the drum type are used from ilmenite concentration to cleaning high-purity zircon products. Chromium-bearing materials are removed from ilmenite more selectively than with electromagnetic separators. Greater flexibility and higher grades in ilmenite circuits are achieved. Cleaner rutile and zircon products, even with respect to levels of radioactive materials, are the result of superior magnetic force optimisation. Tailings from roaster plants can be reprocessed effectively, which is encouraging some operators to look at replacing old equipment in order to process roasted material plant feed or implement use of the new generation drum separators in new plants. Wet separation of ilmenite by using powerful wet REMS drum separators is now a possibility. This may be an alternative to at least a portion of the Wet High-Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS) process for ilmenite preconcentration. A dry plant process flowsheet can often be modified by displacing a portion of high-tension separators with new high-temperature tolerant REMS.

Coal exploration and mine planning now use all the modem techniques to indicate geological hazards to a new or developing coal mine. Drilling, seismic and other sophisticated geophysical methods aim to increase the reliability of prediction of features which will inhibit mine development. But do they?. During the past 40 years, geological investigations for coal mines in New South Wales have ranged from the general observations of Eric Rudd, in the Southern Coalfield in the late 1940s to the very detailed examinations of roof strata by John Shepherd and others in the 1980s. Then, the large scale regional relationships between sedimentary and structural features often were ignored as the minute examination of seam roof strata became fashionable.

Nuclear power stations to be installed in Australia will be fuelled from Australian resources of raw materials.This will require the establishment of new manufacturing industries and the eventual expansion of established activities, especially in uranium mining and the preparation of precision metal products.This paper presents some predictions of the possible growth of nuclear power installations in Australia.These might amount to 4000 MWE by 1985 and 11,500 MWE by 1990 and towards the end of the century, about 50 per cent of new generating plant might be nuclear.Predictions are given of the demands for materials (uranium and zirconium) and fuel manufacturing services for four reactor systems which might be considered in the programme.The availability of raw materials and technical capability place Australia in a particularly good position to undertake the manufacture of nuclear fuel; in addition to satisfying the domestic demand we should actively seek export markets for these products.
