Future mineral processing developments will be of two types. There will be a continuation of the advances of the last 20 years including major increases in equipment capacities, the development of reliable on-line instrumenta- tion, the use of digital computers for automatic control, and the greatly expanded use of in-situ leaching techniques. However, there will also be a need for innovations as the industry faces a different set of problems to those involved in cost and extraction efficiency considerations. These new problems include those relating to energy usage, environmental pressures, and the further development of large low grade deposits and small, high grade metallurgic- ally complex deposits. Present technology does not appear adequate to solve many of these new demands. New treat- ment concepts will be required, and the immediate outlook in this regard is not encouraging. A major research and development task in mineral processing over the next 20 years will be to seek out new ideas and develop them, and this must be pursued with imagination and determination. Both the continuation of the present research pro- grammes and the development of new methods will require a steady supply of highly qualified technical personnel. These people are not being produced in the numbers required, and this situation must be urgently rectified.

As the oxide reserves in an oxide/sulphide deposit are exhausted transition to the treatment of sulphides should be investigated in detail and well before processing the sulphide ore commences. The investigation should be broad based to consider all treatment options and not restricted entirely by the existing process plant treatment method. These options may include cyanidation, flotation, roasting, bacterial leaching or gravity treatment and are chosen on the basis of various testwork responses. Experiences in laboratory testing of sulphides and treatment of sulphides at various operations are discussed. This includes the treatment of copper/gold sulphides, CIP treatment of sulphides and treatment of marcasite ore in a conventional CIP circuit.

With the use of 86 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt. Lyell Mining & Hailway Co., it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5,000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts noted on this line. (See l"ig. 1.) Thus at a glance it is possible to see... the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this difficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component. As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5,000 feet bored. (See Fig. 2.) The curves so obtained are particularly interesting for two reasons:1. Each machine has its characteristic curve.2. The curve always steepens.Some machines are found to have relatively flat curves, others flat curves for approximately 15,000 feet of boring, and others steep gradients from the begining.This demonstrates that it is not always economic to discard a drill after it has been in service for a certain length of time or after it has bored a specified number of feet. Each drill has its own characteristics and so must not be regarded as one of a class, but considered on its own performance.The following use of these curve diagrams has been made to determine whether a machine has reached the end of its economic life. Gold deposits in the Chirano district in south-west Ghana are hosted in a variety of structural settings along the Chirano shear zone (CSZ), in Paleoproterozoic rocks of the Sefwi-Bibiani belt. Most gold mineralisation occurs in strongly sheared and hydrothermally altered Birimian mafic igneous rocks and tonalite intrusions within the CSZ. A recent program of open pit structural mapping, core logging, and three-dimensional modelling helped to define deposit-scale structural controls on gold mineralisation. These include strain domains, shear zone flexures, shear zone intersections and vein arrays associated with host-rock competency contrasts. Interestingly, the plunge of higher-grade shoots in some deposits appears to be associated with the intersection of the CSZ and broadly folded Tarkwaian sedimentary rocks, which are not significant gold hosts in the Chirano district. This paper presents the results of 3D modelling that were used to define structural controls on mineralisation in several open pits and one underground mine along a 9 km length of the CSZ. LeapfrogÖ software was particularly useful because it highlighted the orientations of structural features that focused hydrothermal fluid flow during alteration and mineralisation. The improved understanding of structural controls provided two main benefits: near-mine exploration drill targets and better definition of structural domains for resource estimation.

The Charters Towers goldfield is located in the centre of a Lower to Mid-Palaeozoic igneous complex where schistose, amphibolite-grade metamorphic rocks were intruded by multiple phases of medium grained granodioritic rocks. Several generations of mafic and felsic dykes also occur. Two distinct mylonites cut all but the youngest granitoids. Gold mineralisation occurs in quartz veins located in brittley reactivated mylonite and in sympathetic fissures in the undeformed granitoids. The gold-quartz veins occur in complex, gouge-filled, 2.5m thick zones, with minor sulfides, surrounded by zoned phyllic and propylitic alteration assemblages. Four main vein systems are each restricted to separate granitoids or contain oreshoots near granitoid contacts. No genetic relationship between the granitoids and the vein systems can be documented. The early mylonitic fabrics and the granitoid contacts played an important role in ground preparation and in the localization of oreshoots. Non mylonitized granitoids also served as favourable hosts for many of the lodes. Whole rock values of 180 of the granitoids range between 6.5 and 7.9 per mil. Hydrothermal vein quartzes have 180 values between 12.2 and 15.7 per mil. Mylonite quartzes have values of 8.4 per mil. Variation in 180 values of quartzes is in part related to granitoid host rock type.

In flotation, the selection of the size, number and type of cell for a particular duty depends on two important factors. Firstly, the required flotation residence time and secondly, the physical constraints of how much concentrate can be recovered for a given froth surface area and concentrate lip length. The residence time is influenced by ore type and characteristics such as liberation, kinetics and reagent dosage. The amount of concentrate that can be recovered for a given froth surface area and lip length depends on ore type and other characteristics such as particle size, specific gravity and mineral grade. Residence time is determined through a combination of laboratory-scale test work and design scale-up factors. However the critical froth transport parameters such as froth carry rate and froth lip loading cannot be determined in a laboratory. This is because the froth is scraped during a laboratory flotation test and thus does not exhibit natural behaviour, and it is not possible to scale-up froth transport distance or air rate. These values are generally compared via calculation to rule-of-thumb maximum values to establish if these values will be exceeded by the flotation cell selection.This paper first reviews these critical froth transport parameters and then discusses actual parameter values across diverse operating sites, with varying cell duties, cell sizes and types, orebodies and particle sizes. These values are compared against the industry rule-of-thumb to test the applicability of the rule-of-thumb to actual performance. My topic for today is the Crown Minerals of the future. New work initiatives are underway and the organisational structure is being overhauled. These are not insignificant changes and in this paper briefly summarises these proposals. These new work initiatives and changes to the organisational structure will have implications for the industry as a whole and also for the way individual clients interact with Crown Minerals.

The photoresponse of natural mineral pyrite and galena electrodes has been studied in aqueous solutions on freshly fractured surfaces (some fractured in situ) using moderate overvoltages. When fractured in situ, the electrode potential of both minerals instantly drops several tenths of a volt. Pyrite exhibits a spontaneous anodic photocurrent at fracture, which indicates upward band bending (depletion layer) on the n-type electrodes. The negative surface charge responsible for the depletion layer is believed to arise from a surface state that is intrinsic to pyrite surfaces, possibly modified by hydroxide ion adsorption. The flat band potential, Vty, of pyrite is at approximately -1.0 V (SCE) at pH 9.2 but to reach V(b, pyrite has to be cathodically decomposed. In contrast, galena assumes the flat band potential at fracture. Subsequent polarisation of galena at potentials positive of Vth produces an anodic photocurrent (upward band bending) and polarisation negative of Vro a cathodic photocurrent. Most of the galena electrodes studied were degenerate n-type and at potentials negative of Vtb, no cathodic photocurrents are observed, indicating the bands cannot be bent downward, consistent with the Fermi level at the surface merging with the conduction band edge near Vn,. Several were close to intrinsic, with the photocurrent changing sign near Vn,.

Primay (syngenetic and protogenetic) inclusions - i.e. minerals formed during or before diamond growth and encapsulated in the diamond - provide important information on the origin of diamond. Recent Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd dating of such inclusions has yielded crystallization ages older than their volcanic host, implying that diamonds are mantle xenocrysts. In this paper we report results of studies on the nature of syngenetic inclusions and the carbon isotopic compositons of the host diamond from the West Australian diamond deposits at Argyle and Elllendale. The Argyle diamonds are dominantly, of eclogitic paragensis and are characterized by strongly C depleted compositions. The theory of constraints (TOC) is a business improvement method that focuses on exploiting a business’s bottleneck to deliver the highest possible profit. Early applications were mostly in the manufacturing industry; however, the theory in itself is completely generic and has now been applied widely in other industries such as services, retail, software and distribution, amongst others. The intent of the approach is attractive – it focuses on the ‘silver bullet’ rather than ‘death by a hundred projects’, and it focuses on growth rather than cost cutting. Application within the mining industry has been limited to date, although there are a few applications emerging. This paper discusses how TOC can be applied to maximise value during the project planning phase and how to maximise profits when the mine is operational. The paper uses two case studies to illustrate the approach. Case study 1 uses the approach to improve tactical mine planning, which delivers an increase in revenue of 58 per cent. In the retreatment of an old tailing dump containing five per cent of lead principally as lead sulphate, the lead sulphate was floated with liquid Aerofloat reagent after sulphidising with phosphorous pentasulphide in an acid circuit. A zinc middling product was removed by flotation before recovering the lead. Concentrate products were sundried in surface dams.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period between 1917 and 1928 the Junction North Broken Hill Mine N.L. deposited several tailing dumps on its leases, which were acquired by North Broken Hill Ltd.in 1931. One of these dumps lay alongside a main road close to a residential area. The high metal prices prevailing in the post-war years (1945 onwards) provided a strong incentive for retreating this dump and transferring it to a less objectionable site.SAMPLING AND TESTINGIn 1946 a sampling and testing campaign was instituted which culminated in 1949 in a decision being made to erect a tailing retreatment plant adjacent to the dump.The dump was sampled with a 3 in. post hole auger using extension lengths of -! in. pipe for drilling to 30 ft. The dump material was fine and moist and core recovery was excellent. Hole depths ranged from 14 ft. to 30 ft., with an average dump depth of 20 ft.Individual samples were prepared from successive 9 ft.lengths of core and each sample thus obtained was, submitted for sizing and assay.The sampling showed that the dump contained approximately 380,000 tons of fine tailing assaying:

Two blasthole density logging programmes have been conducted on the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine to evaluate the use of this type of logging as an aid to blast pattern design. The first programme also involved the setting up of a Density Test facility with which to calibrate the density probe. The programmes indicated that about 22-23 blastholes can be consistently logged per day at a cost of $1.30 per metre. Even though this is only half the rate required to log the average number of blastholes drilled daily on Mt Whaleback, testwork indicated that no significant loss of accuracy results if only half the holes in a pattern are logged. The major results of the programmes were: 1. The density range for black pyritic Shale is 2.2-2,9 g/cc. 2. The density range for soft to medium hard BIF is 2.1-3.0 g/cc. 3. The density range for hard BIF is 3.0-3.6 g/cc. 4. The front row blastholes show consistently lower densities than the main body holes due to blast damage. 5. A low density zone extending to a maximum depth of 6 m occurs at the top of most blastholes and results from blast damage from the bench above. The eruption 75,000 y ago of the Younger Toba Tuff ignimbrite and associated ash-fall ranks as the greatest known volcanic event of the past million years. The ignimbrite is known to cover 21,000 km2 (it may extend farther under alluvium of the coastal plain) and forms a low-angle depositional shield centered on the Lake Toba caldera. The ignimbrite is largely nonwelded and shows systematic outward decreases in lithic and crystal contents and clast sizes. Coarse lithic lag breccias that occur at places 85 km apart point to two or more vents on a fissure having this length. The extensive associated ash-fall traceable as far as Malaysia and India is evidently a co-ignimbrite ash but could have a phreatomag-matic component. The Lake Toba caldera measures95 x 35 km and is >1 kn deep. It is not a single caldera but comprises several contiguous depressions and grabens diversified by two re-surgent domes. Earlier parts of the caldera are related to at least two earlier ignimbrites including the Older Toba Tuff dated by Chesner at 0.5 Ma. The caldera is elongated parallel to, and is only 25 km from, the great Sumatra strike-slip fault, and it can be considered almost certain that the caldera is in part a kind of pull-apart structure. The ignimbrites are very crystal-rich. There is no reason to think basaltic magma was involved in their emplacement. Together with ash-falls they have a total volume of several thousand cubic kilometers. They can be categorized as originating from partially crystallized granitic magmas that erupted because tectonic pull-apart occurred several times across the pluton. Small rhyolitic lava domes on fault-lines comprise the youngest volcanic products.

Strong research support is needed in parallel with the process of innovation and commercialisation, in building a deeper understanding of the underpinning physicochemical and hydrodynamic forces that deliver the separations, in achieving improvements, in the deployment of a new technology, and in expanding the innovation platform to create new IP. External investment beyond the research, derived from the genuine value proposition of transformational change, funds the pathway for traversing the so-called Valley of Death.

Successful management is ultimately measured by return on shareholders' funds. This is the inescapable and inexorable discipline that ultimately rules every investment. Shareholders today are predominantly, and increasingly, the superannuation funds and insurance funds of almost all of us. We have already reached the situation in Australian investment history in which the best interests of employees can be very directly identified with the best interests of the owners of the capital invested.
