Time Usage Models, used as a basis for calculating performance indicators for mobile mining equipment, have developed from very simple to very sophisticated models. This development has paralleled the increased collection and analysis of production data that itself has been enabled by the evolution of underground voice and data communications along with the relevant information systems. A Time Usage Model divides the hours that equipment is (or is not) used into standard components, by a hierarchical breakdown, so that measures of productivity can be used to compare performance of both people and equipment. The calculation of equipment availability, and thus the underlying Time Usage Model, has always been an extremely emotive topic as different groups use time usage information for different purposes. The direct link between measuring performance Key Performance Indicators (KPI) calculated from these models and employee rewards impacts upon the workforce. This paper discusses the conflict in use by various stakeholders and proposes ways to address some of the more contentious issues each supported by case studies. The simple status code functionality used by early systems has proven inadequate, leading to the evolution of “work-arounds”. These workarounds have become the norm and unfortunately have become embedded in the next generation of models and the information systems that incorporate them. This paper contends that the industry should stop building Time Usage Models to accommodate shortcomings in proprietary systems, but rather collaborate with suppliers to develop innovative methods to deal with the fundamental requirements. There are many points of differentiation that are not clear-cut. Pitfalls are discussed as well as threats to success. A framework of rules is developed as guidelines for how a Time Usage Model should be developed and applied. This will hopefully stimulate the on-going discussion as to how Equipment Availability and other components of the model should be calculated.

Cobalt is principally produced by hydrometallurgical means from the copper-cobalt ores of Zambia and Zaire. In addition cobalt is commonly found in minor quantities in association with nickel and copper-nickel orebodies. Generally the level of cobalt common to these latter orebodies does not warrant separate processing unless the metal price reaches levels last achieved in 1979 and 1980. For pyrometallurgical processing the distribution of cobalt and the factors which affect the distribution of cobalt between matte and slag are not well understood. A limited amount of fundamental research has been completed on cobalt distribution both for simple oxide and matte systems. The paper briefly reviews the relevant literature on theoretical aspects of cobalt distribution between metal and slag and the deportment of cobalt in sulphide smelting circuits. The deportment of cobalt in the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter circuit is critically analysed and areas where recovery improvements may be achieved are highlighted.

A number of suggestions have been made to improve the design of cells used for electro winning and electro refining of metals. Most of these designs have been aimed at increasing the current density used in order to improve cell capacity, although the purpose of some has been to produce electro deposited metals in a continuous manner. Water management at a tailings storage facility (TSF) presents one of the major risks to the safe performance of the facility. International and domestic dam safety guidelines assess a dam’s hazard category based on the consequences of a dam failure and the subsequent downstream damage to the environment and communities.Often a rigorous risk assessment is undertaken during the design stages to identify and control hazards associated with water management through life-of-mine (LOM) phases. However, as experienced during the recent downturn in commodity prices, early closure of a mine can occur rapidly and unexpectedly. "Gold ores often show significant inter-domain variation with respect to the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content and the leach behaviour of the non-GRG component. Liberation assessment is extremely difficult for gold due to its malleability and the high sampling errors and poor test reproducibility resulting from gold’s high specific gravity and the low metal concentrations that occur in most gold ores. The use of microscopic techniques for the liberation assessment of gold is also impractical due to the high number of sampling errors and high cost of analysis.Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) simulation model called SIMCIL, which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. Recently the model has been upgraded to include an integrated liberation-leach modelling (ILLM) approach, which can be used to evaluate the impact of various process parameters (such as grind size, bleed to gravity etc) and circuit configurations on leach-adsorption circuit behaviour and overall plant gold recovery. A new time-efficient ore characterisation methodology has been researched and developed to provide the required liberation-leach data used in the ILLM approach, which is implemented online for the modelling of gold operations. In 1983 the New South Wales (NSW) Government began to construct a 35 km freight rail line to provide additional rail capacity to Port Kembla in the Illawarra region, south of Sydney, through a direct connection between the Unanderra to Moss Vale line at Dombarton to the Main South rail line at Maldon in the Southern Highlands. The project area lies within the carefully managed Sydney Water catchment and is also underlain by previous coal mining activities.Construction of the line halted in 1988 prior to its completion after the NSW Government reassessed the demand case and found that the project was not as viable as originally forecast. However, by this stage the line was partially constructed, including the majority of civil earthworks, approach structures to the main river crossings and establishing the portals for the Avon tunnel as a precursor to major tunnelling works.In 2012, the Commonwealth Government funded Transport for NSW to undertake the necessary engineering and environmental preconstruction works. Most importantly here, the 1980s rail link was predicated upon the use of electrically powered locomotives, whereas the locomotive fleet in operation today in NSW is diesel powered. This fact has a significant impact upon the approach and development of the Avon tunnel section, as the diesel powered locomotives combined with the length and grade of the tunnel alignment produces a unique set of conditions requiring specialist engineering design and systems to ensure safe and functional operation of the railway through the tunnel section.Given the above, the Avon tunnel will need to be supported by a ventilation and smoke control design based on the heat rejection from the locomotive consist, consideration of ambient air quality compliance, comparison against in-tunnel air quality goals, and providing safety systems in line with the fire and life safety strategy it requires.This paper explores the current development of both the tunnel civil works responding to the geography, geology, rail functional requirements, as well as the tunnel ventilation systems being revised to suit the diesel locomotives.Further, this paper describes the importance of combining the design outcomes with the procurement methodology in order to achieve the project objectives, a functional outcome and value for money across the project life.CITATION:Baker, T and Bagis, A, 2014. The routine use of gravity gradiometry for the detection of orebodies with no outcrop is now being undertaken. The commodities and orebody styles range from banded iron ore formations to volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) style polymetallic deposits. This recent innovation of flying gravity gradiometry was pioneered by BHP Billiton and Lockheed Martin with the Falcon technology (Lee, 2001), and now two additional systems, also using Lockheed Martin instruments, are deployed. In South Africa, magnetic gradiometry is being developed and deployed with the same objectives in mind. In this case, a system from Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) is being used. The detectable wavelengths from such systems have decreased to less than 200 m in the last year, and it is expected in 2011 that wavelengths to less than 100 m, with anomaly signal strengths of less than 2 Eotvos for gravity gradiometry will be viable. The key to these advances lies in the improvements of processing software and geological modelling. In particular, methods using all the tensor components are starting to be routinely deployed to filter, level and grid the observed signal. These methods do, however, require full insight and understanding of the reference coordinate systems used by the various instrument designers and survey operators. The digital terrain models need also to be observed to an accuracy of better than 20 m cell sizes, using such techniques as Lidar. Then the terrain effects can be modelled. The topographic surface represents the largest and most proximal density contrast encountered in an airborne survey. Hence terrain effects can have significant impact on airborne gravity gradiometry data. A decorrelation of the terrain effect with the observed signal requires a method of best fitting with a regional surface density. A novel technique has been developed for this purpose. This technique uses a tensor algebra to estimate a density between 1 - 4 g/cc that explains the average observed signal. Armed with this result, the anomalous buried bodies can be revealed by subtraction.

In the flotation of platinum group minerals pyroxene is a major gangue mineral. This study shows using zeta potential and ToF-SIMS analyses that when pyroxene is exposed to copper, nickel and/or calcium ions in solution at alkaline pHs a surface reaction occurs between the hydroxy species, in the case of copper and nickel, or divalent calcium ions and the pyroxene surface which influences the floatability of the pyroxene. Following exposure to copper and nickel ions at pH 9 addition of SIBX resulted in the pyroxene floating readily. It is also shown, in the case of copper, that the activating effect of the adsorbed copper hydroxy species can be reduced by the addition of complexing amines prior to SIBX. Proposals are made to explain these observations.

"Spring Creek Mine uses high pressure water to extract the thick Main seam in the Upper Rewanuicoal measures. The extraction method results in the creation of large voids which collapsespontaneously. This can result in the displacement of large volumes of methane, which may create a signifi cant hazard if not correctly managed. A system of automatic dilution doors is employed to mitigate this risk. This paper describes the evolution of the system and gives some examples of its eff ectiveness."

The optimum mining of an orebody in an underground mining operation is fundamental to the mine’s ability to operate both sustainably and efficiently. The effective mining of an open stope or a cave is largely reliant on the recovery of the initial void created by conventional drilling and blasting. These initial voids are known by various names such as a Longhole Rise, Slot or Winze and can be mined either as a downhole or as an uphole. Regardless of the underground mining method, the process of the design and implementation of this initial void is largely uniform across many operations with various patterns of slot or winze designs used across these different operations. Diligent design, implementation and review strategies in drilling and blasting of these will facilitate cost-effective mining with minimal disruption to mine schedules and production targets. When an operation struggles in opening the initial void in underground mine blasting, it has a negative impact on productivity, mineral recovery, and the overall economics of mining. Near field blast vibration monitoring is a vital tool to use in analysing slot blasts and will provide additional feedback into the reconciliation part of the drill and blast process. It is one that is often overlooked in the mining industry in many operations due to many factors such as lack of skilled personnel, or a lack of required resources. The data obtained from near field blast vibration monitoring can be used to provide additional feedback into blast reviews and help in any drill and blast optimisation projects. This paper highlights key aspects of underground drill and blast reviews and the use of near field blast vibration monitoring for post blast analysis and shares learnings from various projects that the authors have been involved in within Australia and abroad.

The Earth's Upper Mantle is dominantly peridotitic but in convergent margin regions, such as the S.W. Pacific, subduction of oceanic crust gives greater chemical and petrological diversity to upper mantle petrology and petrogenesis. Examination of currently active, Quaternary and Tertiary volcanism in the S.W. Pacific, particularly seeking information from ocean floor sampling to characterize the basement to island arcs and to investigate active spreading centres, consistently points to parental magmas of basaltic to picritic character. However, these parental magmas are chemically diverse and it is not possible to designate a characteristic 'island arc' or 'convergent margin' petrogenesis in the sense of a characteristic mantle source composition and a charactistic partial melting regime. In this respect, magma genesis at convergent margins contrasts with that at oceanic spreading centres. Our studies emphasize the importance of source peridotite ranging from 'fertile lherzolite' (i.e. compositions with 3-4% CaO, A12O3, 0.3-0.5% Na2O) to refractory harzburgite (

Modem blast initiation systems allow users many options for connection and application in the field, and have resulted in more innovative and complex uses of sequencing to influence blast outcomes. However, no tool existed which allowed the blaster to easily and quickly assess the effect of different options. The original requirement was for a computer program which allowed the easy input of blast patterns and the associated initiation sequence, and then permitted the evaluation of different options with respect to established criteria such as the number of holes per delay and angle of initiation. The implementation of this goal saw the development of the SHOTPIan blast sequence design software, with particular emphasis on an easy-to-use menu driven interface and visualisation of the blast sequence. Extensive trialling during development saw the incorporation of additional features requested by industry such as the ability to import from established mine design software packages, and further features such as the calculation of burden relief times. Case studies of the use of the program are provided, where the rapid evaluation of a number of options has enabled blast results to be optimised. This report will differ slightly from the traditional scientific and technical discussions given at this type of conference. It will focus on the personal experiences and choices that I undertook when deciding on my graduate position and location after completing university studies. Throughout the duration of my course I had experience in both fly-in, fly-out operations in the Pilbara and residential operations in the West Australian Goldfields. These experiences, though limited, allowed me to explore the two different methods and their pros and cons, and consequently to make my choice for graduate employment. Throughout the duration of my degree I believed it was important to gain a basic understanding of the two methods, focusing on lifestyle and personal interactions. The decision that a residential site suited my personality and lifestyle then allowed me to refine my job applications to a more specific list of mine sites and companies, resulting in a residential position with BHP Billiton at their Iron Ore operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

Within 22 months of commencing decline development, the Prominent Hill Ankata Underground Project achieved its full production rate of 1.2 Mt/a.In 2010 construction of the Ankata Underground Project was approved. Decline development commenced in November 2010 and the turnout for the first sublevel was reached by August 2011. The first stoping ore was produced in the first quarter of 2012 and production was successfully ramped up to full production during the third quarter of 2012.Diamond drilling commenced in October 2011 and was conducted concurrently with the underground development. This presented challenges as mining and production targets had to be balanced with underground exploration activities. To achieve production on schedule, without adversely affecting the diamond drilling program and future development, meticulous and adaptive planning techniques were required. This included involvement from engineers, geologists, underground operators and underground diamond drillers.The granularity of these planning techniques allowed the management and prioritisation of development and diamond drilling down to an almost hourly basis. A constant flow of information from drill assay results was fed back into the planning systems. This resulted in a constantly evolving mine plan as the orebody was further refined. In the geologically prospective nations which rim the Pacific Ocean, mineral deposits offer great potential to create wealth for social and economic development. The paper first examines the geological and economic attributes of potential mineral wealth based on current outlook assessment of all significant base metal deposits discovered to 1988 in two Pacific Rim nations - Australia and Canada. The variability of mineral wealth among the economic deposits evaluated and the major contribution of the few world-class discoveries to total mineral wealth are highlighted. Then, the essential but too often neglected linkage between the makeup of potential wealth and its actual realization is analyzed. The impact of taxation and the role of exploration are crucial in this regard. Finally, the ingredients of exploration success, prerequisites for realizing the mineral wealth of nations, are examined.

A short overview of the research program of SveBeFo, Swedish Rock Engineering Research, which was founded in 1993 is first given. Then four recent and ongoing projects in rock blasting and explosives engineering are presented in greater detail: 1. Burn Equations for Commercial Explosives. 2. Blast Damage in Contour Blasting. 3. The Role of Gas Pressure in Pit Wall Damage. 4. Fragmentation of Aggregate Rock. The goal of the bum equation project is to be able to control the energy release from explosive charges to the desired part of the expansion curve of the reaction products under various rock conditions. SveBeFo's work has reached the stage where a burn equation for a lab emulsion has been established which can model the influence of charge diameter on the VOD and detonation front curvature in a cylindrical charge quite well. This work now continues with other emulsion recipes. In the blast damage project the goal is to develop techniques and recommendations on how to minimise the blast damage in construction blasting. The project has gained extensive practical knowledge from the blasting of more than 200 holes in a granite quarry under controlled conditions. The cracks in the rock surrounding the contour holes have been cut open and measured. The influence of factors like charge concentration, decoupling ratio, hole and charge size, VOD and time delay in initiation have been investigated. A simultaneous initiation of a group of contour holes with EDD detonators is quite superior to single hole blasts, even when they are timed as closely as 1 ms.

Australia has been an important producer of zinc minerals and metal for many years.Late in the last century Edgar A. Ashcroft, a versatile and enterprising electrical engineer proposed the treatment of zinc rich ores by roasting, followed by leaching to extract zinc, purification of the solution and electrolysis of the purified solution to produce zinc. Residues from the leaching operation were to be smelted in a lead blast furnace to recover lead, silver and gold.Ashcroft (1897-98) and (1898) has.given us a most interesting record of the attempts made at the Sulphide Corporation's plant at Cockle Creek near Newcastle, NSW, to put his ideas into practice. In spite of the best efforts of all concerned, including the use of electrolysis of aqueous chlorides and sulphates, zinc could not be deposited consistently and the project failed although lead smelting continued until 1922 (Woodward, 1965, p. 158). Based on later experience with Broken Hill materials the presence of undetected cobalt in the solutions was the likely cause of the inability to deposit zinc (Kirk and Othmer, 1956).

Magnetic susceptibility measurements provide rapid, non-destructive testing of drill core, but cannot directly map magnetite and/or hematite content. Combined magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements provide much more diagnostic information and, with sparse calibration constraints, are able to quantify magnetite and hematite concentrations and potentially map differences in grain size and texture. We have developed a travelling three-component vector magnetometer that can be run alongside core to map its external magnetic field. The logger has been designed to operate in core sheds and at remote drill sites. It is used to rapidly scan a length of core, with each core being scanned in different rotations. The magnetic field contributions from any remanent magnetisation rotates with the core and cause differences between successive measurements, while the field contributions from any induced magnetisations with isotropic magnetic susceptibility remain constant. Deconvolution of the magnetic field data with simultaneous three-channel inversions of the multirotation data separates remanent and induced components. Interpretation of this data provides estimates of the intensities of induced and remanent magnetisations, the orientation of the remanent magnetisations and the ratios of the induced and remanent magnetisation strengths. We expect these magnetisation parameters to correlate with stratigraphy through a banded-iron formation. Furthermore, we anticipate that we will be able to use this information to map zones of oxidation and other changes along the core. This novel instrument is one component of an integrated CSIRO program to provide new capabilities for iron ore exploration and development based on studies of magnetic fields and magnetisations at scales ranging from centimetres for these core investigations to tens of kilometres for formation studies.CITATION:Foss, C A, Leslie, K and Arnold, C, 2015. Iron Ore Holdings Ltd (IOH) is an emerging junior iron ore company that is actively developing projects in the Central and Western Pilbara region of Western Australia. IOH commissioned URS Australia Pty Ltd (URS) in mid-2008 to prepare environmental assessment documents for the Phil’s Creek Project, which was rapidly moving into the development phase. This project comprised a small open cut iron ore mine that was expected to deliver approximately seven million tonnes over a five year mine life.IOH faced several challenges in the environmental assessment process for the Phil’s Creek Project. Although the Phil’s Creek Project attained approval but has now been placed on hold, it is a useful case study to discuss these challenges and how IOH addressed them. Several important lessons were learned through this process that can assist other proponents in addressing environmental challenges in a constructive and proactive manner.One major challenge faced by IOH related to the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Another challenge was the unusually high species richness of troglofauna recorded within the project area, with several species initially known only from within the proposed pit footprint.Meeting and overcoming these challenges has provided IOH with an increased understanding of the level of input required for consultation with government departments regarding environmental assessments, and this should stand the company in good stead for developing future tenements. Challenges in regards to the environmental assessment process may be faced during future developments, but IOH’s experiences to date and the lessons learned from the Phil’s Creek Project, will help pave the way for successfully overcoming them.

In non-ferrous metal mining operations, it is generally necessary to crush and grind the ore to a very fine particle size to effectively liberate the contained mineral from the host rock. Fragmentation by blasting is the first stage of this comminution process.Numerous studies and independent modelling of the Mine to Mill process have demonstrated the potential for significant downstream productivity improvements from improved blast fragmentation. However, safety and environmental constraints associated with the blasting process usually limit the extent to which blast energy or powder factor can be increased.An effective blasting solution has been identified that enables the safe utilisation of powder factors several times higher than those used conventionally to provide significant improvements in fragmentation. The solution uses a static ‘blanket’ of broken rock overlying the blast to contain this increased blast energy and control rock movement. To produce this broken layer of rock, the subdrill in each blast is significantly increased to preblast (or precondition) the entire stemming region of subsequent blasts on the next mining bench.The solution has been evaluated at a large open cut poly-metallic mine in Mexico. Results from the application of this technique have shown significant improvement in run-of-mine fragmentation, with subsequent downstream productivity improvement indicated.CITATION:Hawke, S J and Dominguez, L A, 2015.
