Laboratory experiments have been used tostudy a wide range of convective processes which are significant for the formation of rocks and the ores that form in them. Metal-rich solutions flowing through the sea floor produce 'black smoker' chimneys; both the size and structure of a solid chimney and the height to which the plume of effluent rises above it can be predicted using model experiments. Analogues of processes in solidifying magmas can also be studied using crystallizing aqueous solutions. The release of lighter or denser residual fluid as crystallization proceeds, and the resulting compositional convection, have a vital influence on the differentiation of initially homogeneous magma and on the evolution of stratified magma chambers. Mixing during the replenishment of magma chambers, and its dependence on the rate of filling and on the fluid properties, have also been studied on the laboratory scale. Experiments carried out in different geometries have been applied here to the formation of platinum and chromite ores and komatiite lavas. Larger-scale mantle convection, in particular the motion of subducting plates and plumes rising from the core-mantle boundary, also determine the tectonic settings in which ore bodies form. These phenomena too can be usefully investigated in laboratory experiments using very viscous fluids.

Macraes Mine is a large-scale open-cut and underground gold mine located in Central Otago, on the South Island of New Zealand. This paper presents the role of geological mapping in the grade control process at Macraes Open Pit as a case study, and demonstrates how systematic geological mapping can add significant value to the mining cycle. Geological mapping has proved to be a valuable foundation for orebody interpretation and analysis.Practical applications and lessons learnt are summarised, including predictive control of the orebody, improvement of geotechnical modelling, and identification of further exploration targets.

Sampling of grain, animal feeds (solid and liquid) including important mineral mixtures in the Danish agricultural sector is subject to an ongoing investigation with the objective of improving existing (suboptimal) sampling procedures. Results from the first six months are presented here; the project will continue for two more years and will include international collaborators (Australia and Canada). The Danish authorities have instituted a system of control analysis, which contains a set of mandated sampling and analysis methods. From a preliminary survey it was concluded that in fact all of the existing sampling procedures are not optimised in the light of Pierre GyÆs Theory of Sampling (TOS).

This paper reviews recent advances in geophysical tools for mineral exploration. It does not restrict comments to methods which are usually applied in the tectonically active belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean, where geophysics has often been secondary to geological prospecting (eg visual recognition of surface alteration) and drainage geochemistry; but considers geophysical tools applied to a broader range of both deposits and terrains. For example, the subdued topography of much of Australia and Canada has lent itself to the development and extensive application of airborne methods. In Australia, deep weathering and transported cover have necessitated the use of geophysical methods to not only detect anomalies but also to map and understand basement geology. This same weathering has caused specific problems, particularly for electrical methods, but recent improvements in instrumentation, processing and visualisation have largely overcome them. A great deal of geophysical data is now being collected by government agencies, often from the air, and made readily available to explorers. In several Australian states it is free, often on line, and in almost all cases it is relatively cheap. These regional data sets are often augmented by more detailed local surveys in areas of interest. Although æanomaliesÆ are still important much more is being done with the high quality data which is now available The results are used for geological mapping, to test geological hypotheses, to construct detailed 3D geological models and, together with fluid flow modeling, to predict optimum locations for mineralisation.

The sampling time, the costs and its quality are the three factors that determine the best method of drilling in mineral exploration. The two principal methods of reverse circulation (RC) and diamond core drilling are often used in combination by mine operators. RC is used for drilling shallow holes and in-pit grade control, and core drilling for deeper holes to identify future resources. The RC method is faster and more flexible than coring and provides virtually uncontaminated cuttings (ranges from dust to 25 mm chips) to the surface cyclone suitable for geochemical anomalies. The diamond coring produces core samples to increase the level of geological knowledge and the 3D extension and distribution of the orebody. However, both of these methods are subjected to certain limitations and inefficiencies in reaching deeper depths and drilling complex hole geometries. Examples of such shortcomings include the inability to provide enough air pressure for RC drilling and high friction between drill pipe and the hole wall in diamond core drilling.Considering that delivering large volume of reliable samples from deep zones to the surface in shortest possible time is of paramount importance in mineral exploration, and assuming that obtaining core samples over whole overburden is not always essential, then drilling small size holes as fast as possible and delivering the small chip samples to the surface would be a good alternative with several advantages over conventional drilling methods for deep hard rocks mineral exploration. As a result, the use of coiled tube (CT) drilling technology has been proposed recently for such applications. CT is a continuous length of ductile steel or composite tube stored and transported on a large reel; and allows fast drilling by eliminating the connection time and providing continuous circulation during drilling. This enables quick access to the zone of interest to collect the cuttings or obtain core samples. CT is advantageous particularly in drilling directional boreholes and multi-laterals. In this paper, feasibility of using CT delivering reliable samples is discussed for deep mineral exploration. In addition, recent developments and practices are presented that make CT a reliable drilling technology to drill cheaper, faster and deeper and to deliver more continuous and reliable data and samples from deep formations.CITATION:Mokaramian, A, Rasouli, V and Cavanough, G, 2012. The method for design of primary roof support for the large todoidal cavern constructed to house the Sydney Opera House parking station is presented. The cavern was constructed with 5 m of rock cover beneath Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. Design of rock reinfonnent using a combination of fully grouted rock dowels and Macalloy bars was based on control of horizontal shear movement along bedding features in the roof. A combination of linear arch type analyses and non-linear jointed finite element analyses were used in the design study together with an analysis of the shear resistance offered by fully grouted bolts under shear deformation.

In May 2000, Kanowna Belle Gold Mines (KBGM) carried out a detailed Truck versus Shaft Haulage Study. The study showed that whilst the shaft option had many operating cost benefits the capital costs were too high, therefore the truck option was selected. In May 2001, the concept of achieving æshaft typeÆ benefits without the capital costs was floated. This is achieved by separating the hoisting of ore from other mining activities. The general concept is that material from underground is transported to a central location and then transported to the surface by a special truck fleet, thus removing the dependency between trucks and loaders, providing the mine with surge capacity and decreasing operating costs. At KBGM these advantages have been gained by installing an ore pass system with a plate feeder at its base that directly loads trucks. This provides the mine with a haulage system with enough surge capacity to remove the interdependency between trucks and loaders. The plate feeder is situated just off the decline which creates the opportunity to use larger more reliable, lower cost trucks. A number of truck types were considered for the truck loop including Elphinstone AD55Æs which are the truck type being used on site prior to the truck loop, CAT 775EÆs and power trailer road trains. This paper covers the philosophy behind the truck loop, the truck selection process, project installation and commissioning, people issues and the benefits expected by the operation. As of May 2002, the project is nearing completion, with decline haulage expected to commence in July 2002.

Geostatistical conditional simulation is a method to assess variability and risk in mineral deposits and the tool has wide potential applications in the iron ore industry. Correct reproduction of multivariate relationships is important in iron ore simulation, especially between Fe and impurities such as Al2O3, SiO2 and P. The turning bands simulation method, using a full model of coregionalisation for multiple attributes, is the main multivariate conditional simulation algorithm used in the Western Australian iron ore industry. This paper discusses the results of a more recent approach using minimum/maximum autocorrelation factors (MAF) to transform and decorrelate the multivariate data prior to independent sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS). MAF-SGS results are compared to those of the turning bands approach in the Yandicoogina channel iron ore deposit (CID), and both methods performed well in simulating Fe, SiO2, Al2O3 and P distributions. Extensive checking of simulations showed that both approaches could reproduce multivariate statistics and spatial continuity of the original conditioning data. Both approaches reproduced the histograms and variography of input sample composites. While the MAF-SGS approach requires additional transformations when compared with the single normal scores transformation required for the turning bands method, MAF requires only that the direct semivariograms be modelled. In contrast, using turning bands with multiple attributes requires modelling a full linear model of coregionalisation, which can be difficult to model because of the need to ensure the model is positive semi-definite. Turning bands may be preferred if there are a modest number of correlated variables allowing construction of a linear model of coregionalisation that adequately models the multivariate behaviour. MAF-SGS is preferable for larger numbers of correlated variables. Both MAF-SGS and turning bands methods performed well in conditional simulation of correlated variables at Yandicoogina.

The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. Cannington Mine is an underground, hard rock, metalliferous mine located in North-Western Queensland, Australia. Weld mesh is installed to prevent the failure of rock from between the installed reinforcement elements. Corrosion reduces the capacity and life expectancy of mesh and presents a real hazard to underground personnel and equipment as it reduces the effectiveness of the support system. Corrosion influences the economics of the mining operation through the need to conduct rehabilitation of the ground support which involves re-installing new mesh or shotcreting over the affected mesh to protect it from further corrosion. The requirement for rehabilitation is determined by the geotechnical engineer based on an individual visual assessment with little or no engineering input. It was identified that a more quantitative method was required that considered the safety and economic risks involved. A project was undertaken to develop a simple method to evaluate corroded mesh and to provide selection criteria for rehabilitation. A weld mesh corrosion classification has been developed that relates the average wire diameter of corroded mesh to the remaining capacity of the mesh. Accompanying selection criteria provides recommendations as to when rehabilitation may be required based on the estimated residual mesh capacity, the remaining development life, and the level of personnel exposure.

Mining operations have large power requirements. The biggest consumers of energy are the drives for the mills located in the concentrators. Assuming that the decision is made on how many mills are needed and how big these mills will be, it can be determined how these mills should be driven. The decision as to which drive should be applied depends on design limits for different mechanical or electrical drives, anticipated operation modes, capital expenditure optimisation and lifecycle cost optimisation.The task for the engineer specifying the drive equipment is to select a drive solution that can debottleneck the operation, avoid interruption of production and enhance the reliability of the process. At the same time, the engineer must choose a design that enables cost optimisation either in a single investment or in relation to the total cost of ownership (TCO).This paper outlines different mechatronic or electric drive alternatives for tube or horizontal mills applied in the mining industry, along with their advantages and disadvantages. "The Gold Fields group and Gekko Systems have successfully worked together on multiple projects, including at the St Ives, Agnew and Granny Smith operations in Western Australia, and the Damang operations in Ghana, with gravity recovery design, technology installation and optimisation the key driver on each occasion.In 2014, Gold Fields Australia identified an opportunity to challenge the historical thinking at Granny Smith and reassessed the benefit of upfront gravity gold recovery. The historical approach had been to employ gravity on the tailings stream of the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit, recovering sulfide minerals into a concentrate from spiral concentrators for further liberation of gold via a regrind circuit.Gekko was engaged to assess the implementation of a gravity circuit within the grinding area, and to perform a comprehensive gravity recoverable gold test program. Test data was fed into the AMIRA P420 BCC Gravity Model to confirm the gravity recovery potential of the ore, and for process design basis generation. Height, space and capital limitations proved to be a design challenge. However, collaborative learnings throughout the project ensured the design and operation of a reliable and economic gravity gold circuit. Ultimately, the Granny Smith gravity circuit was a success, satisfying all the project objectives and yielding consistent, measurable benefits. On average, the gravity circuit recovers 33 per cent of total gold, resulting in an increase to overall gold recovery by 0.7 per cent.This paper highlights the key project drivers for Gold Fields, and the development of the Granny Smith free gold gravity circuit. It details application of test work and modelling, and the challenges and learnings encountered during the design, installation and commissioning stages. "Predicting how coal seams will be beneficiated through the coal handling processing plant (CHPP) has long been challenging within BHP Coal. Various coal seams from different areas are mined and stockpiled separately, often depending upon a deleterious coal quality parameter; high/low trace elements for example. These stockpiles are then fed in different ratios into the CHPP to produce the desired product/s. In understanding the washability characteristics of the feed source, mine geologists and process engineers work together to improve the beneficiation of different coal materials through the CHPP.For the majority of the BHP Coal deposits, the washability data is available for the coal seams across the deposits. However, no previous standardised modelling and prediction technique existed that could ensure the correct information was available for forecasting and refining CHPP processes. This paper will discuss the steps undertaken to implement a geometallurgical prediction tool that simplified and streamlined the washability modelling and yield estimation process. Many open pit mining operations seek to control blasting-related movement of ore and waste to minimise loss and dilution. Tracking the movement of ore boundaries can result in the maximisation of ore recovery and minimisation of waste sent to the mill, thereby optimising the economic performance of the operation.A novel solution for tracking the ore–waste boundary location before and after a blast uses subsurface markers placed along the boundary with all measurements and scans conducted remotely from the blast block. Upon system activation, user-operated equipment on the surface determines the three-dimensional (3D) location of the subsurface markers.The patented system concept combines two electromagnetic mechanisms, magnetic positioning and radio frequency through-rock communications to enable remote battery-powered markers, buried within the rock to be accurately located in 3D space.Field trials at a quarry have demonstrated the system can comfortably handle over 100 subsurface markers with a complete scan, including set-up, taking less than an hour. Location accuracy for each marker in 3D space is better than 0.5 m at a range up to 50 m from the magnetic source, and the system has an overall operational range in excess of 75 m.CITATION:Blay, K R, Spathis, A T and Leslie, K E, 2015. Recent major urban trunk sewer infrastructure projects in Melbourne have involved construction of nearly 10 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels in a range of geological conditions varying from soft alluvial soils to hard volcanic rock. To provide both construction and permanent access to the new trunk sewer network, a total of 17 shafts between 5 m and 13 m in diameter, and up to 64 m in depth have been constructed. This paper describes the design and construction of the temporary shaft support systems for the shafts.The range and variability of geological conditions at each shaft site required the adoption of the following shaft support systems across the projects – jet grouting, sheet piles, diaphragm wall, secant pile, contiguous pile, reinforced shotcrete rings and rock bolts.Groundwater control, settlement, TBM launch and reception chambers at the shaft base, chambers and TBM launches at mid-depth of shafts, connection shafts between new and existing sewers and bypass pumping shafts are among the challenges that have been met.This paper reports on the some of the challenges involved and experience gained in developing design and construction solutions for large diameter shafts that are excavated within varying geology in Melbourne over the past three years.

In April, 1990 the Sydney Water Board invited bids for the construction of the Hazelbrook Carrier Section 3 being part of the Blue Mountains Sewerage Transfer Scheme. In December 1990 the contract was awarded to Costain Resources Limited, Mining Services Division for the sum of $A15.3 M. The works consisted of excavation of 9 520 linear metres of tunnel, 3.35 metres diameter with installation of permanent ground support in the form of rockbolts, mesh, steel sets, shotcrete and in situ concrete

As a project moves through the mine life cycle, the quantity of data available increases and the understanding of the orebody matures. Incorporating new information quickly and efficiently in current 3D models, is essential for adding value across the life-of-mine value chain. At the Martabe Gold Mine, the resource development group manages 14 drill rigs on six resource projects, including three operating mines. The Martabe deposits are geologically complex and the volume of new information that becomes available each day is substantial. It is imperative that new geological and assay information is integrated into the 3D models as soon as possible, so that drill planning and targeting can be modified accordingly. Martabe uses Leapfrog<sup>®</sup> 3D software to update and interrogate the 3D models on a dynamic basis as data becomes available. This results in faster and more effective changes to drill planning and schedules. The impact of this is better drill productivity and cost savings due to optimal drill targeting, and availability of up-to-date models incorporating the most current data. Tiwest employs several methods to assess the quality of heavy mineral concentrates in ore and process samples. Mineralogy is determined using a method called MA98, developed in conjunction with JKMRC over the last three years (Zhang and Whiten, 2001). A range of other techniques are also used to characterise ore, heavy mineral concentrates and mineral products. MA98 is the culmination of efforts since 1989 to determine mineralogy from chemical analysis without recourse to heavy liquid fractionation, which has traditionally been used to discriminate between light-heavy , zircon, rutile and leucoxene. The major advance with MA98 is the use of statistical mass balancing for all chemical species, as opposed to reliance on key chemical species for each mineral. Three magnetic fractions are analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, with a minerals balance performed for each. Heavy mineral concentrates processed by this method include drill samples, process samples from the wet concentrators and Dry Mill, and mineral products. TBE can be avoided for higher heavy mineral grade samples since quartz is determined from SiO2 balance. In this sense the method is sufficiently universal and robust to cope with a wide range of sample types and compositions. The MA98 algorithm provides abundant information in addition to mineralogy, including TiO2 and Fe2O3 grades of ilmenite and leucoxene, and concentrations of weakly magnetic zircon and kyanite. Information such as this is invaluable in tracking different minerals through the processing plants. Other ore assessment procedures used by Tiwest provide for modelling of orebodies by mineral sizings, Fe in zircon, and FeO and U+Th in ilmenite. Microscopy is used to provide important qualitative information such as grain shape, surface staining and degree of cementing. These quality measurements are included with mineralogy in geological ore models and are available for mine scheduling. In using the above methods to characterise heavy mineral concentrates, Tiwest is better placed to predict and monitor plant performance and product quality from any ore zone.
