Resource estimates are the corner stone of technical and investment decision-making. Prior to mining, resource estimation uncertainty has the greatest potential to lead to poor investment decisions, despite a significant component of resource estimation uncertainty being unknowable at this critical stage in the mining cycle. This presents a conundrum to the resource geologist in terms of risk evaluation and resource classification. Ahead of mining, there is normally considerable focus on drill hole spacing analysis to determine the ‘optimal’ drill hole spacing, taking grade and geological continuity into account; cost-benefit analyses balance improved resource definition against cost; the law of diminishing returns and the exponential cost increases acting together as spacing is reduced. Typically, a lower limit to the drill hole spacing is identified. After completing the resource drilling to an agreed spacing, resource estimation is then undertaken. At this point it is common to attempt to bracket the resource estimation uncertainty. In many cases conditional simulation is used, based on a modelled, but largely assumed, variogram model. It is also assumed that the histogram of the available drill hole sample data is representative of the in-ground mineralisation. The purpose of this paper is not to diminish the importance of drill hole spacing and simulation studies, but rather to illuminate an important aspect of estimation uncertainty that, although previously recognised, is typically overlooked – the question of how representative the available data set is in characterising the true (but unknown) distribution of mineralisation. To do this, we lift the lid on one of OceanaGold’s former operations, the mined-out Globe Progress Mine, by resurrecting a high quality, close-spaced, reverse circulation (RC) grade control data set. The Globe Progress Mine is within the West Coast Region of New Zealand, it was closed and transitioned to rehabilitation in 2016 and is now known as the Reefton Restoration Project. The exhaustive Globe Progress grade control data was used to repeatedly ‘redrill’ the deposit by extracting 35 m × 35 m spaced subsets from the original 5 m × 5 m spaced grade control data. Utilising closely spaced grade control data removed the need for assumptions regarding short range continuity, which are necessary with forward-looking analyses that are based upon broader spaced resource drilling. The extraction process used a nearest neighbourhood algorithm, repeatedly moving the origin in 5 mE, or 5 mN increments. Individual resource estimates were then completed for each of the extracted drill hole data sets (49 in total) as well as a grade control estimate based upon the exhaustive data set. Whilst the data unpinning each of the 49 estimates changed, the geological assumptions, variography, and modelling parameters remained constant. This approach was taken to isolate the impact of changing the input data. The 49 estimates were then compared against each other and the grade control estimate. The mean of all 49 sensitivity estimates was close to that of the grade control estimate in terms of contained gold, tonnes and grade. Whilst it is acknowledged that the grade control estimate itself is subject to some degree of estimation uncertainty, the close match between the average of the 49 estimates and the grade control estimate suggests that the resource estimation methodology is reasonable and appropriate. Whilst this comparison is important, the focus of this study is on the component of estimation uncertainty related to the underlying data, and this is reflected in the spread across the estimates. The spread across the 49 global estimates (highest to lowest) for this particular Mineral Resource Estimation Conference 2023 | Perth, Australia | 24–25 May 2023 142 case study was found to be significant (approximately 20 per cent in grade and metal) and that is attributable solely to the underlying data. This exercise quantifies a component of the estimation uncertainty that is inherent to all drill hole data and is distinct from the uncertainties associated with modelling methodology choices, sample and subsample quality and drill hole spacing-related interpolation uncertainty. Importantly, this uncertainty is unknowable prior to mining; we can only directly compare the resource drill hole data against grade control data after mining has taken place. For the case study, approximately 65 per cent of the estimates fell within 5 per cent of the grade control estimate for contained-gold, suggesting that for many projects the histogram of drill hole data is unlikely to differ noticeably from that of the in-ground resource. However, about 15 per cent of the estimates in this study differed by more than 7.5 per cent, suggesting that a not-insignificant proportion of estimates will be materially compromised. Whether or not the available drill hole data is representative comes down to the ‘luck of the draw’ and cannot be known at the time of resource estimation. Given the challenge of attempting to evaluate forward-looking estimation uncertainty, a component of which that can only be quantified retrospectively, what should we do as resource geologists? What are the implications for risk evaluation, resource classification and reconciliation? Furthermore, without rigorous post-mining data checks, resource geologists may conflate suboptimal modelling with the shortcomings of the underlying data. An example of this problem is discussed in the following section.

This work presents the fundamental properties of CITIC magnetite concentrate and its performance in pelletising and sintering. CITIC concentrate has been widely used in pelletising to produce pellets for blast furnaces. It is also used in sintering to benefit from its sintering performance. CITIC concentrate has excellent balling properties owing to its size distribution, particle surface properties, large specific surface area and balling index, leading to strong green pellets and product pellets. When used in sintering at appropriate levels, sinter bed permeability improves, productivity is increased while coke consumption reduces, and sinter strength improves.

The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement (MMSR) is a major urban infrastructure project involving approximately 2.3 km of tunnelling and construction works. The works extend from Docklands Precinct, on the southwest edge of the city, southwards to connect with the Hobsons Bay Main Sewer in Port Melbourne. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnelled section of the works terminates at the Yarra River where the delta geology and alignment requirements precluded the use of underground tunnelling methods. The 132 m long river crossing works involve a cut-and-cover excavation within a staged fl ooded cofferdam construction to construct an immersed tube tunnel as an extension of the TBM works.This paper reports on the development of the staged construction method and highlights the geotechnical and structural design aspects involved in building a new sewer in the Yarra River to close the gap between the new TBM driven and pipe-jacked tunnels.

To respond to ever-increasing challenges, mining companies have been experimenting with new business models and technologies in order to speed mine development, production, processing and transport. The various experiments involve mobile access to data, intelligent sensors, advanced analytics, virtual collaboration, virtual reality, automated equipment, remote operations centres and strategic partnerships. A synthesis of all these components creates a ænetwork effectÆ that can dramatically improve the overall effectiveness the entire operation. The concept of the Network Centric Mine borrows from a variety of industries, including defence, aerospace, aviation, petroleum, utilities and manufacturing. Central to the concept are improvements to the way we connect people, process, information and technology, resulting in a more highly collaborative business model, with roles and processes designed to take advantage of new technology. The components of the mining operation act as a connected network aimed at a common goal, regardless of the boundaries of organisation and location.The design of this new organisational ecosystem needs to take into account the recent advances that enable the æplug and playÆ integrated collaborative environment, including cloud computing, mobile devices and social networking, as well as advances in augmented reality, robotics, geo-location, digital labelling, simulation and analytics. However, the most consistent lesson from other industries is the need to properly enable the behaviour and process changes necessary for success.Benefits from adopting a network centric approach include the more effective use of scarce expertise, improved data and information analysis, reduced process variance, and more informed and faster decision-making. The future of mining will see more technology savvy workers who will drive the adoption of new processes. The Channel Tunnel is an outstanding example of an undersea tunnel and its design illustrates most of the unique features of this type of tunnel. The marine site investigation was partic- ularly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. To minimise this interference the time the drilling vessel was required to remain on station was kept to a minimum by expediting the drilling and the insitu tests as far as was practicable. To avoid additional unforeseen costs the contract documents were framed to take particular account of marine practice. The limited access at the coast line meant that for economy, maximum tunnel advance rates had to be attained. Ground excavation, handling and disposal methods and the provision of the lining were optimised and equipment specified in detail to ensure that no one com- ponent was delayed by a lack of capacity or mechanical failure in any other.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) commissioned The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to undertake a study into how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. This report builds on a previous study prepared by BCG in the early 1990s for the Industry Taskforce on Leadership and Management Skills (Karpin Committee), which provided a snapshot of the Senior Manager in 2010. At present, the friction factor is calculated by measuring pressure drop and airway configurations. However, the workload of on-site measurement is heavy, and the measurement results are easily disturbed by the external environment. In order to meet the need of intelligent ventilation to quickly and accurately obtain the friction resistance of roadway. Based on the important of roughness in Atkinson friction resistance formula, in this paper, fractal theory is used to characterise the 3D rough surface, and a method based on fractal dimension to describe the roughness of roadway surface and calculate the friction resistance was proposed. A computational model of friction resistance for fractal characterisation of roadway 3D rough surface was established. The parameters of the model were deduced and verified by using Nikuradse experimental data. The fractal dimension of roadway surface was calculated by 3D laser scanning data of Kailuan roadway, the established friction resistance calculation method was compared with the field resistance measurement results. It is considered that the calculation method of friction resistance based on fractal theory is reliable and can well represent the influence of 3D rough surface characteristics of roadway. The result show that the new established friction resistance formula compared with the traditional Atkinson formula in Nikuradse experimental, the average relative error is 6.874 per cent, and compared with the measured results of ventilation resistance in Kailuan experimental roadway, the relative error is 6.667 per cent. Comprehensive evaluation and analysis suggest that the new formula can well reflect the influence of 3D rough surface on friction resistance, combined with 3D laser scanning technology, the friction resistance of roadway can be calculated quickly and accurately. This research provided a reference for the key technology and theoretical development of intelligent ventilation parameter measurement.

The binary indicator coding of assay and lithological data according to a single criterion or multiple criteria is a powerful technique for representing mineralised shapes through the modelling of probabilities. This can be as simple as using a single indicator to model the probability of occurrence of a condition, usually a grade threshold or a lithology, but it can also be used with a number of categories. Case studies are presented to show the power of this approach, where the geological controls on mineralisation or on the distribution of a rocktype or alteration, often coupled with mineralisation, are unclear. The categorical approach is often used as a de facto grade filter in disseminated or stockwork mineralisation. The ultimate expression of the indicator formalism is in multiple indicator kriging (MIK), where a conditional distribution of probabilities is generated for each estimation panel. This has applications in recoverable resource estimation, as the input for continuous or categorical simulation, where the distribution of sample grades is multimodal, or when there are superimposed mineralisation events with different orientations. However, in some cases, MIK is being used as an excuse for ignoring a quality geological interpretation. Examples from the public domain show the abuse of the categorical and MIK approaches to modelling probabilities, together with a plea for greater consideration of the geology.

Oversize rock breaking and metal tramp removal are key issues for reducing primary crusher downtime, as well as improving the safety associated with its operation. Remote operation of such tasks would thus not only increase productivity, but also reduce the risks related to work in confined spaces, fall risks, and overhead hazards. These issues are particularly relevant in high-capacity operations such as iron ore mining, where large machines are in continuous operation. This article describes the architecture, construction and advanced testing of a novel remotely operated robotic mechanism for assessment and removal of metal tramp from primary crusher chambers. The system essentially includes a robotic-arm equipped with a hydraulic clamp tool for handling oversize material, as well as an oxy-flame module for cutting metal pieces entrapped within the primary crusher cavity. The first industrial unit was delivered to a large iron ore mine in Brazil, where the installation and testing is scheduled within the coming months.

The Olympic Dam mine utilises 1.1 m to 1.4 m diameter raise bores for generating the initial slot void for most production stopes. Slot raise bores generally span two development levels ranging from 30 m to 50 m in height. Raise bores are reamed upward and typically leave a cap of rock equivalent to two times the raise bore diameter on the drill level (minimum 3 m). This provides safe access over the cap for subsequent production activities. It is therefore critical to ensure robust falling object protection for personnel accessing underneath, and in the vicinity of the raise bore void on the lower level. Recently, a number of mesh failures have occurred at Olympic Dam as a result of falling rock from the underside of the cap and raise walls. In addition, as Olympic Dam transitions to deeper and more challenging ground conditions, rockfall-off onto the raise bore protection mesh is anticipated to increase in frequency. This paper discusses the evolution of raise bore protection mesh used at Olympic Dam and presents results from recent site-based drop testing. This impact testing was carried out using a built for purpose object to replicate point loading and shear failure of mesh wires. Testing was also carried out on an improved mesh design which utilises two layers of Geobrugg high-tensile MINAX mesh. Results from the drop testing suggest an improvement in performance of the raise bore protection mesh is realised with the updated design.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (Cliffs) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three separate hubs and trucked to Koolyanobbing. There it is crushed and screened to lump and fines finished products and railed to Esperance port for export to Asian customers. Cliffs is renowned in the marketplace for its consistent product quality. In 2010, 9 Mt of ore was exported to Asia.Over the last three years, Cliffs has systematically refurbished its product quality system (PQS), to improve efficiency of production while maintaining its high standard of product quality. Particular attention has been given to reducing inventory, which has required significant modifications to the production process design.In redesigning the production process, emphasis was placed on maximising the application of the inherent blending in each of the production process steps and dedicated blending was only introduced where essential. Simulation modelling and statistical analysis of process capabilities were utilised to develop a system that optimises inventory, minimises rehandle, eliminates several decision-making steps and maintains a pull focus throughout the value chain.The new planning functions are now fully integrated and effectively control long-term grade variability rather than relying on long-term stockpiling. The production process design and the daily crusher blend plan are used to control short-term grade variability. With the upgrading of the planning processes the accuracy and consistency of algorithms for lump per cent and lump and fi nes grades became more important and an increased geometallurgical function has been added to the company.The continuous stockpile management system was upgraded to increase the effectiveness of the daily crusher blend planning process and is now the sole intervention point in the production process for grade-based decisions. Grade control systems were modified to utilise advances in software and geostatistics to deliver accurate short range planning models. The reconciliation and sampling systems have also been refurbished with an emphasis on practical application and feedback loops.Accountability and transparency are provided by management reports that are generated from a centralised data warehouse and the introduction of a corrective action system. Standardised reports are available to all stakeholders and a quarterly KPI scorecard assists the management review process.The successful rejuvenation of the PQS has culminated in operational efficiency through the implementation of an integrated end-to-end process flow. Shareholder value is maximised through maximising recovery of the resource and minimising costs. Customer focus is maintained by reliably delivering product with acceptable and low grade variability.

Although Western Mining Corporation has been producing high grade nickel ore at Kambalda since 1967, it has only recently become a significant gold producer.The main source of Gold ore has been the Victory Gold Mine located 17 kilometres South of Kambalda.This mine produced small tonnages of high grade gold ore from a sediment horizon within a complex sequence of mafic flows, in the 1890's, early 1900's and 1930's.Today, mining is centred around 2 com-pletely different ore bodies named Victory and Defiance, and involves several different mining methods. This paper describes the Operation's history and gives an outline of the proposed stoping methods.

Gwalia gold mine is located close to the town of Leonora in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, some 830 km from Perth. The mine is wholly owned by St Barbara Ltd, an Australian Securities Exchange listed gold producer and explorer. The Gwalia mine is a deep, all-trucking mine and is serviced by a 10 km long decline from surface. Mining is currently 1540 m below surface. Reserves extend to 1820 m below surface and are open at depth. The mine produces in excess of 200 koz of gold per annum.The Leonora area is hot and arid, with a mean annual rainfall of 230 mm and a 95 per cent mean daily maximum temperature of 20.3°C wet-bulb and 35.6°C dry-bulb.The primary ventilation system comprises a 490 kg/s surface exhaust fan, which draws air down a parallel intake system consisting of the decline, and a dedicated fresh-air intake system extending to the bottom of the production zone. Cooling is provided via a surface bulk air cooler serviced by an ammonia refrigeration plant that delivers 150 kg/s of chilled water to the bulk air cooler.The refrigeration plant and bulk air cooler were installed in 2008. The design allows cooling to be increased over time by installing an additional refrigeration plant in a lead lag configuration with the current refrigeration plant when required.Since 2008, expansion and increased depth reached a point where the underground heat load exceeded the installed capacity of the existing 4.0 megawatt rated (MWR) refrigeration plant. In order to maintain the mine design conditions underground, upgrading of the existing refrigeration system was required to bring the cooling capacity to 7.5 MWR.Two expansion options were considered: the addition of an ammonia vapour-compression refrigeration machine similar to the existing one or a lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system using waste heat from the site power station. The original design and layout of equipment on-site meant that either could be used, allowing an assessment of the merits of both when additional cooling was required.The decision was made to install a lithium bromide absorption system on the lead side of the existing ammonia refrigeration plant. The Grande Côte Mineral Sands Deposit (GCMSP) is located on a coastal mobile dune system in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Senegal is a stable, democratic republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960. It has a population of about 12.5 million people. The dunes begin about 25 km north-east of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and extend northwards for more than 140 km. The mineralised dune system averages about 2 km wide with some areas extending to up to 4.5 km wide.Mineral Deposits limited (MDL), a Melbourne-based company with over 60 years operational experience in mineral sand mining in Australia, holds, through its Senegalese subsidiary MDL Senegal SARL (MDLS), a 25-year Mining Concession covering the deposits. The main heavy mineral (HM) areas identified to date are, from south to north, Mboro, Fass Boye, Diogo and Lompoul. Within the Mining Concession there is potential to identify additional resources beyond the limits of present drilling. The dunes are mobile or semi fixed, pale yellow in colour and overlie older white marine sands. The dunes range between 5 m and 30 m in height and the mineralised zones, which are essentially flat-lying, average around 15 m in thickness. The mineralisation consists, principally of ilmenite with accessory zircon, rutile and leucoxene. Zircon and ilmenite are the main commodities of interest.Independent consultants AMC estimated mineral resources for the four main deposits in 2006 of 1330 Mt of sand averaging 2.0 per cent HM at a cut-off grade of 1.5 per cent HM. At a cut-off grade of one per cent the resources were 3200 Mt averaging 1.5 per cent HM. All of the estimate was classified as Inferred Resources under the 2004 Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC, 2004).Subsequent completion of infill drilling, sampling and assaying of the initial mining area, centred at Diogo, was completed in 2008, enabling a final dredge path to be designed and ore reserves estimated, based on a JORC compliant Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource. Infill drilling is continuing in the Lompoul and the results of this campaign will be included in the JORC compliant data base by AMC in April 2010 to enable the 15 per cent year dredge path and mine plan to be finalised.Development studies have shown that the project can be optimised as a dredging operation, with mineralised sand being treated in a conventional floating spiral preconcentrator, wet concentrator and dry mineral separation plant. Engineering work now substantially completed by Ausenco Limited (Ausenco) has developed the combination of some existing plant from MDL’s past operations, and new plant for the complete process from dredging to final product separation and grading. Testwork on a series of bulk samples has determined that the project can yield a high quality zircon product and an ilmenite product along with minor rutile and leucoxene.Work to date indicates a likely output of around 80 000 t of zircon in various quality streams (Primary, Secondary, Standard and Foundry Grades), around 550 000 t of ilmenite plus around 15000 t of rutile and around 12 000 t of leucoxene/secondary ilmenite. Planned zircon output would represent around 7per cent of the total world production, which would make the GCZ&IP a significant producer on a world scale.The studies have indicated capital costs to be in the range of US$400 M total operating cost (after completion of ramp-up) of around US$50 M - $55 M/a. Revenue is expected to be in the range $127 M - $157 M/a.

The detonation pressure of ANFO can be significantly reduced by the addition of low density materials such as polystyrene, bagasse, swadust or perlite. Laboratory and field test results have shown that homogene- ous mixtures of these low density explosives can be produced in a bowl truck and loaded into a blasthole without segregation. The detonation pressure of the mixture can be altered to be more compatible with the material in which it is being used by varying the quantity of low density additive incorporated into the mixture. Field results have shown that these low density explosives can lead to significant cost savings without com- promising fragmentation or production.

This paper describes the design of the precast concrete segmental lining for the 13.1 m internal diameter and 450 mm thick, 2.4 km long mainline tunnels for the Waterview Connection project in Auckland for the New Zealand Transport Agency.The design and detailing of this segmental lining presented some noteworthy challenges, including an alignment that has sections of low cover in soft ground. Key points of interest are that this precast segmental lining is the largest to ever include steel fibres as the primary method of reinforcement and the lining includes cams on circumferential joints to control ring deformation.The paper describes some of the key design decisions that were made in a collaborative manner with the construction team, tunnel boring machine manufacturer, segment manufacturer and the designers.CITATION:Mahajan, R, Kuras, A and Pradhan, S, 2014. The production scheduling of an open pit mine determines the optimal extraction sequencing that significantly impacts a mine’s life as well as net present value. The optimisation of production scheduling of large open pit mines with geological uncertainty is a computationally very intensive process. In this paper, an approximation algorithm is proposed to schedule an open pit mine, where instead of solving the whole problem at once, the production schedule is generated by sequentially solving subproblems. The subgradient method is used to generate the upper bound solution of the Lagrangian relaxed subproblem. If the upper bound relaxed algorithm is not a feasible solution, a mixed integer programming is solved on the generated upper-bound solution. An application at a copper mine with an orebody represented by 16 532 mining blocks is presented using the proposed algorithm. Results show that all constraints are satisfied. The net present values are also calculated and results reveal an 11 per cent higher net present value (NPV) is generated when compared to the NPV generated when the same approach is applied to the deterministic model of the deposit where uncertainty is not accounted for.CITATION:Chatterjee, S, 2014. The high sulfidation Purnama Au-Ag deposit located on the Indonesian island of Sumatra entered production in mid-2012 following a two-year program of construction and development. Discovered in 1997 following a regional stream sediment geochemical sampling program by the Normandy Anglo Asia joint venture, it is the first and largest deposit in G-Resource’s Martabe Project to enter production and is the centrepiece of a series of six deposits totalling 8.1 Moz Au and 73.8 Moz Ag in Mineral Resources (G-Resources, 2013a).In 2011 investigation into the controls of high-grade mineralisation in isolated parts of the deposit identified a potentially significant mineralisation style which had not been previously recognised or accommodated in the resource model. An extensive investigation of core and logging data followed to confirm the distribution of the somewhat unusual mineralisation style – a sedimentary-like cavity infill of very high-grade auriferous pyrite within the steep hydrothermal breccia feeders to the system. With the bulk of mineralisation located within the adjacent volcanic sequence and sandy-matrix phreatomagmatic breccia surrounding the feeders, the lack of constraint for high-grade intersections in the hydrothermal breccia zones had potential to significantly impact the mine plan in the lower sections of the planned pit through overestimation of local gold grade. Combined with new data emerging from grade control drilling and infill resource drilling in the pit, a program of reinterpretation of the deposit was initiated to update the geological and alteration framework underpinning the resource model. The potential for bulk diversion was identified and quickly implemented following the development of bulk sensing technologies applied to conveyed flows. In the early 1980s real time analysis of ash in coal was intended to improve the understanding and control of quality variability. By the end of the 1980s approximately 5% of coal analysers installed were being utilised for bulk sorting; diverting flows to create stockpiles to improve blending flexibility and boiler feed consistency, diverting waste material, or bypassing the beneficiation process when the coal met product quality criteria. In the 1990s bulk sensing and sorting utilising natural gamma detection was applied to conveyed waste in gold-uranium mineralisation and allowed ore to be recovered and processed that would otherwise have been discarded. Further applications developed in the iron ore sector where product quality ore could be diverted to bypass beneficiation and save significant unnecessary processing costs and improve recovery by avoiding process inefficiency losses. Plant capacity was freed up to be utilised by material that required processing. Similar benefits became evident in the phosphate industry and in base metals where multi-elemental analysis using Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis provides ideal opportunities to representatively measure 30 second conveyed increments at high accuracies. This has been successfully adopted in copper, nickel, platinum and lead-zinc to improve waste removal after primary crushing to eliminate unnecessary expense and improve plant efficiency. The benefits include increased output from existing operating capacity, significant reductions in consumable costs and generation of fewer detrimental waste streams. The paper outlines the technologies and discusses case studies covering the above commodities, demonstrating the immense value that representative real time measurement of conveyed flows can create. Measurement data concurrently provides multiple benefits in operational performance besides sorting, through ore reconciliation, ore blending, feedforward control and metal accounting, adding further value.

The measurement of error in assays collected as part of a mineral exploration program or mining operation, including errors introduced during sampling, sample preparation, or geochemical analysis, historically has been undertaken in a variety of ways. Different parameters have been used to describe the magnitude of relative error and each of these parameters is related to the standard measure of relative error, the coefficient of variation. Calculation of the coefficient of variation can be undertaken in a variety of ways; however, only one produces unbiased estimates of measurement error: the root mean square coefficient of variation calculated from the individual coefficients of variation.
